Anya Hindmarch Urges Public to Chill During London Fashion Week

A CLOUDY DAY IN LONDON TOWN: Anya Hindmarch loves putting on a wacky show. Past ones have featured spinning teacup rides or handbags singing show tunes while the latest is an immersive, Instagram-able presentation for the press and the public with big, fat bean bags shaped like clouds, a live choral concert and lots of meditative moments.
The installation, Chubby Cloud by Anya Hindmarch, is a three-day event that’s taking place at Banqueting House, the neo-classical gem designed by Inigo Jones. The great hall has a vast Peter Paul Rubens on the ceiling and once Saturday morning’s giddy guests had jumped, vaulted and flopped down on the big white bean bag that nearly took up the room, they could view that painting like never before.
On Saturday, a BBC presenter invited guests to relax on the cloud while he read “The Shipping Forecast,” a regular radio weather report for the seas around the U.K. (many British people find this both informative and soothing) as Hindmarch spoke briefly about the virtues of taking a break. The accessories designer has booked a lineup of ticketed talks, meditations, music and bedtime stories over the three-day period.

Hindmarch opened a cloud-themed cafe for a 3-day consumer event known as

Public School’s Next Act

Public School is like a cat with nine lives.
The pioneering streetwear brand, which launched in 2008, has been in and out of the limelight over the past decade as it navigated the vagaries of the fashion industry.
And when it opens the doors to its pop-up with Nike today, it will mark the latest reinvention strategy for the brand.
Last year, Public School collaborated with Nike on a sneaker centered around the Air Force 1. Although the initial design was created for the shoe’s 35th anniversary, it was never released to the public. That will change today when the sneaker will be front and center — along with complimentary apparel — at PSNY’s pop-up space at 3 Howard Street in Manhattan. The shoe will be released globally on Wednesday.
This is the first time Public School has worked with the core Nike collection, although the designers collaborated on the company’s Jordan brand since 2014.
To celebrate the new partnership, the designers and Nike will host a Streetball Classic event on a court on East Houston Street before the store opens to the public tonight.

McCain Family Attends Public Viewing to Hug and Exchange Stories with Thousands of Mourners

Sen. John McCain‘s children and members of the public mourned his death, together, at the Arizona State Capitol in Phoenix on Wednesday evening.

After attending a private ceremony for family and friends in the afternoon, three of McCain’s seven children — Sidney, Jack and Jimmy — returned to the rotunda to hug and share stories with those waiting in line at the public viewing. According to the Arizona Department of Public Safety, some 12,000-15,000 waited in line to say goodbye in the sweltering heat, CBS News reported.

Emotional footage from a local NBC station showed mourners thanking the children for their father’s service and Sidney, 51, telling one woman waiting in line, “It’s so incredible that all of you are here.” Another man could be heard telling Sidney, “It’s the least that we can do for a great man like that.”

Meanwhile Jack, 32, made the rounds offering hugs and handshakes, including one to a little boy holding an American flag.

The family and friends of John McCain paid their respects to the late six-term senator and decorated veteran earlier Wednesday, during a private memorial service at the state capitol.

Meghan McCain, the senator’s daughter, and Cindy McCain, his wife of 38 years, were both at the service and wept over his casket. At one point, Cindy tenderly placed her cheek against the flag draped over her husband’s coffin.

The McCain family announced on Friday that the six-term Arizona senator had decided, “with his usual strength of will,” to discontinue medical treatment for stage-four brain cancer.

Just one day later, McCain died at the age of 81.

McCain will lie in state at the state capitol through Thursday. There will then be a public procession to carry his casket to the North Phoenix Baptist Church for a 10 a.m. local time service. Senator McCain’s family and friends, along with state, local and tribal officials, and business and civic leaders from across Arizona were invited to attend.

There will then be a public viewing in the U.S. Capitol Rotunda Friday afternoon before the casket is transported to Maryland for a private service at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis on Sunday.

Following her father’s death, Meghan, 33, shared a touching tribute on social media.

“In the thirty-three years we shared together, he raised me, taught me, corrected me, comforted me, encouraged me, and supported me in all things,” she wrote. “He taught me how to live. His love and his care, ever present, always unfailing, took me from a girl to a woman — and he showed me what it is to be a man.”

“All that I am is thanks to him,” she continued in her tribute. “Now that he is gone, the task of my lifetime is to live up to his example, his expectations, and his love. My father’s passing comes with sorrow and grief for me, for my mother, for my brothers, and for my sisters. He was a great fire who burned bright, and we lived in his light and warmth for so very long. We know that his flame lives on, in each of us. The days and years to come will not be the same without my dad — but they will be good days, filled with life and love, because of the example he lived for us.”

Cindy also mourned the loss on social media. “My heart is broken,” tweeted Cindy, 64, minutes after her family announced the late senator’s death.

“I am so lucky to have lived the adventure of loving this incredible man for 38 years,” she continued. “He passed the way he lived, on his own terms, surrounded by the people he loved, in the place he loved best.”

Public School Men’s Spring 2019

Call it Public School part two.
On the final night of New York Fashion Week: Men’s, the streetwear-skewed brand held a party and presentation at a space on Howard Street in Chinatown with its theme kept under wraps until the doors opened.
“This is our space,” said Dao-Yi Chow, who designs the label with Maxwell Osborne. “This will be our first retail store and this is a soft launch of the space.”
Throughout the location were mannequins dressed in the new collection — although Chow said the description “needs an asterisk by ‘new.’ Everything is recycled, upcycled or dead stock,” he said, and is intended to represent our new philosophy.”
While the philosophy may be new, the lineup revisited the duo’s greatest hits.
They revisited collaborations with like-minded brands including Eileen Fisher, whose dead-stock silks became striped pajama-inspired ensembles; Levi’s, whose vintage denim was reworked into cropped trucker jackets, and Alpha Industries military fabrics made into sleek outerwear.
“It’s very much the foundation and our past and then looking into the future,” Osborne added.
The collection reflected that with a clear example being a supersharp black suit with built-in cargo pockets and statement zippers. A short-sleeve jumpsuit — also part of their DNA — was so elegant

Public School to Participate in NYFW: Men’s

Public School will be participating in New York Fashion Week: Men’s — but exactly what the brand is planning to do is being kept under wraps.
On Friday, the New York-based men’s and women’s label founded by Dao-Yi Chow and Maxwell Osborne sent out an invite to an event Wednesday night in TriBeCa. The invitation, which also had the branding for Moët & Chandon, read: “A piece of ground that belonged to them, on which they could plant their feet, permanency.” The designers had created special bottles for the spirits brand that were unveiled during New York Fashion Week last September.
A spokesman for the company declined to provide further details on Wednesday’s event.
In December, the designers said they would be taking a break from showing their collection during NYFW in February as “the company is in the midst of stepping away from the traditional industry format and launching a new direct-to-consumer concept.” The company said details would be shared in advance of the launch later this year and that the brand would be “refining” its product assortment, “delivery cadence,” and restructuring it organization.
According to retailers who had carried the line, the final Public School wholesale collection was shipped for spring.

J.W. Anderson Asks Public to Create Spring/Summer 2018 Brand Campaign

ME, TOO: Jonathan Anderson is taking a collaborative approach to his spring/summer 2018 ad campaign, asking members of the public to submit pictures so that he can promote future imagery – and image-makers – with the slogan Your picture/Our future.
“By asking for submissions in this way, it really feels like the right way
to find new imagery. We have taken a chance on image-makers in the past, and we decided to do it in an even bigger way now,” the designer said, adding that he wants to help emerging talent along.
“I felt as if we were given a chance. We were all young, new and coming through together, particularly when we launched our campaigns. It felt right to give somebody else that opportunity. Fundamentally, it is about talent giving a chance to talent —this is something I really believe in.”
He said the aim is to “galvanize a new generation of image-makers—aged 18-30—and to help one of them develop a distinct voice in the forthcoming campaign.”
Anderson, the label’s founder and creative director, is working with Benjamin Bruno, the brand’s creative consultant and M/M (Paris), who usually work with Anderson on his campaigns.
Anderson also plans to curate the submissions for a show

Mother of L.A. Lakers Rookie Lonzo Ball Makes First Public Appearance Since Suffering Stroke

Lonzo Ball‘s mother, Tina Ball, made her first public appearance on Thursday after she suffered a stroke in late February.

Accompanied by her outspoken husband and Big Baller Brand creator LaVar Ball, the mother of three was spotted at the American Sports Center in Anaheim, California where she watched their youngest son, LaMelo, play in a Big Ballers AAU game.

LaVar walked alongside his wife, who was supported with a quad cane and proudly wore the family’s BBB shirt in blue and gold, the colors of her NBA son’s alma mater, UCLA.

That same night, Lonzo, a standout rookie on the Los Angeles Lakers, was in Las Vegas where he had his second triple-double of the NBA Summer League.

In May, Lonzo, who learned of his mother’s stroke via a text message from a relative, spoke to ESPN The Magazine about his mother’s health condition and how she spent two and a half months in the hospital recovering.

“She can’t really talk right now. But she definitely knows what we’re saying, and she smiles all the time. So that’s a good thing,” he described.

“She’s the one. Just so smooth. She’s not like other girls. She’s tough, smart, pretty,” LaVar said of Tina, who met at Cal State Los Angeles, where they both played basketball. “I told my wife, ‘I been with you so long, you can have one eye drooped and your mouth over here like this and you’re still beautiful to me. I look at you the same way. That ain’t gonna never change.’”

Kourtney Kardashian Continues Public Romance with Younes Bendjima amid Scott Disick PDA with Bella Thorne

Kourtney Kardashian isn’t letting her ex Scott Disick‘s recent PDA with Bella Thorne stop her from enjoying her vacation — she’s got her own budding romance to focus on.

On Wednesday, Kardashian was spotted leaving the Gotha nightclub in Cannes hand-in-hand with her beau Younes Bendjima, a 23-year-old model. Kardashian, 38, opted for a sparkly pink minidress with a plunging neckline and baby pink heels, paired with a high, swinging ponytail.

The outing certainly isn’t their first: Kardashian and Bendjima, who have been seeing each other for about a month, have spent several days together in the French Riviera, and a source close to the reality star recently told PEOPLE that Bendjima is “fun for Kourtney.”

“Younes is young, but very responsible,” said the source. “He doesn’t really party. He’s very sweet to Kourtney.”

Meanwhile, Kardashian’s ex Disick, 33, with whom she shares three children, is also in Cannes — where he’s been getting close to his latest fling, 19-year-old Thorne.

The two first sparked romance rumors last week when they stepped out for a dinner date in Los Angeles, and after jetting out of Los Angeles together, the two were spotted cuddling on Wednesday as they lounged on sun beds at a luxury private villa.

Of the PDA pics, one source told PEOPLE that Thorne “really likes the attention,” and another source said the two are “having fun together — partying and acting very flirty.”

“There’s definitely chemistry, and they both seem to love the attention,” said the second source. “It’s not like they’re hiding.”

However, Disick and Thorne appeared to party separately on Wednesday evening: Disick was seen at Baoli nightclub without Thorne, while Thorne was spotted leaving their villa, presumably heading to an event in a sparkly gown and tiara.

Kardashian and Disick ended their nine-year relationship in July 2015. They’ve gone through ups and downs in their relationship ever since, though up until recently appeared to have been in a good place, spending plenty of time together as a family co-parenting their three kids.

Earlier this month a source told PEOPLE that Disick wasn’t taking well to his ex’s new relationship.

“Scott is a typical guy about it,” said the source. “He doesn’t like that she’s dating. For him, it’s fine to hang out with girls, but when Kourtney does, he pouts.”

‘The Invisible Man’ Performance Artist and Photographer Liu Bolin About to Take a More Public View

ALL CLEAR: The Chinese performance artist and photographer Liu Bolin is the art world’s version of “The Invisible Man,” but he won’t be so hard to see in the months ahead.
Annie Leibovitz’s semitransparent shots of him in Moncler’s spring ads are just the start of a hectic work schedule. In April, Bolin will have solo exhibitions at the Gallery Magda Danysz in Shanghai, and at the Galerie Paris-Beijing in Paris. There will also be a performance at Centre Georges Pompidou and another at Festival Portrait(s) in Vichy, France later this year.
Before those get under way, the artist will speak May 11 at the “Art of Tomorrow” conference at the W Doha Hotel & Residences in Qatar. The upcoming blitz is a switch for the artist whose “Hiding in the City” series features self portraits in which he camouflages himself by painting himself to blend into his landscapes. “It’s my way to convey all the anxiety I feel for human beings,” the artist has said of the practice.
Along with brands like Guerlain, Fred, Renault and Ford, Bolin said his first fashion-related project was to hide five well-known designers — Jean Paul Gaultier, Alber Elbaz, Angela Missoni and Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pier

Public School’s Chow and Osborne: Moonlighting No More

Public School is back in session — during fashion week, that is. On Sunday, Dao-Yi Chow and Maxwell Osborne will return to the calendar from a high-profile hiatus during which they showed off-season, in deference to their second job.
In May 2015, the designers were famously enlisted by LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton to head up design at DKNY. Heirs to Donna Karan and Jane Chung, the partners were recruited on the strength of the uber cool brand they launched with men’s wear in 2008, all street-smart, aspirational New York attitude. Having grown up as style-savvy kids in New York, they felt a certain affinity for DKNY. As co-creative directors, they would shepherd the brand into a new era of relevance while soaking up knowledge from one of the world’s great luxury groups that they could apply to their own, still nascent business.
We’ve all heard of the best-laid plans. Little more than a year after Osborne and Chow arrived at DKNY, G-III’s Morris Goldfarb bought Donna Karan International from LVMH in a move that took everyone by surprise, including the designers. Not surprisingly, G-III’s plans for DKNY were very different from those of LVMH, and in December the designers left company.

Here’s How You Can Attend Carrie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds’ Public Memorial Service

Three months after Carrie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds died within a day of each other, their adoring public will get a chance to mourn the Hollywood icons in a memorial service open to all.

The “Star Wars” actress and her mother were laid to rest in a private ceremony in early January. But Todd Fisher, their brother and son, announced on Friday that a public memorial will be held in Los Angeles’ Forest Lawn Memorial Park on March 25 at 1 p.m.

Seating will be first-come, first-serve, although there will be room for overflow.

“On Saturday, March 25th, there will be a public memorial for my Mother, Debbie Reynolds, and my sister, Carrie Fisher at Forrest Lawn Cemetery Hollywood Hills at the Freedom Theater,” the announcement says. “We will be celebrating their lives with friends, family members, and the people who loved them, you. The service will begin at 1:00 PM and immediately afterwards, those who want to walk to their final resting place are welcome to do so. There are a limited number of seats available, and it will be on a first come first come, first seated basis, There are no tickets, it is first come, first seated. There will be room for overflow in the huge lobby as well as the outside with screens to watch and hear the service.”

Fisher died on Dec. 27 at the age of 60, just a few days after suffering a medical emergency during a flight from London to Los Angeles. One day later, Reynolds died after reportedly suffering a stroke.

They are survived by Todd Fisher and by Carrie Fisher’s daughter, “Scream Queens” actress Billie Lourd, who has paid tribute to her mother and grandmother on social media.

Public School’s Crash Landing at CFDA’s Retail Lab

Leave it to Public School to shake things up a bit.
The New York-based streetwear brand has been chosen as the third label in the Council of Fashion Designers of America’s Retail Lab, a mentorship program that includes a physical store. But unlike their predecessors who opted for more-subdued designs, designers Dao-Yi Chow and Maxwell Osborne created an installation that re-creates a Cadillac crashing into a wall inside the store at the Cadillac House at 330 Hudson Street.
The prior two designers who participated in the program were Timo Weiland and Cushnie et Ochs.
“We messed it up a bit,” Osborne said. “We ran a car through the wall to offset the prettiness of the showroom.”
And in keeping with the Public School aesthetic, the car’s trunk is halfway open and goods for sale are spilling out. “It’s like a street mentality,” Chow said. “You pop the trunk and that’s where you find the hot merchandise.”
Saying the installation was “a lot of fun” to create, the designers said the mix will change every week or so in order to draw repeat customers. In addition to men’s and women’s looks from the core Public School collection, the store will include “exclusive collaborative product” as well,

Public Speaking? There’s An App For That

This article first appeared on QuietRev.com

According to the 2015 Chapman University Survey of American Fears, the top three personal anxieties that make us lose sleep are (1) reptiles, (2) public speaking, and (3) heights.

There’s not much Quiet Revolution can do about scary snakes and dizzying drop-offs, but when it comes to glossophobia, we are here to help with a selection of apps that focus on the different facets of making a presentation.

So, clip on that wireless mike, and be heard!

Before the curtain rises

If you need to sedate the butterflies in your stomach prior to making a presentation, Public Speaking (Android) and Confident Public Speaking (iOS and Android) may give you some relief. These apps are guided meditation and self-hypnosis programs that can help you relax and minimize the anxiety of speaking in front of crowds.

A certain number of verbal pauses are perfectly fine, but when your speech is peppered with many ummms and uhhhs, it gets distracting and annoying. Cue Ummo (iOS)! Tell the app which words you want to track, then record your speech. Ummo will generate a transcript that highlights the words you specified. Use your newfound awareness to cut back on or eliminate the rough spots.

And then there’s VirtualSpeech (iPhone and Android), a virtual reality app that allows you to use your smartphone to simulate presenting to an audience. You need a VR headset as well as the app, so the whole setup is on the pricier side, but…but…VIRTUAL REALITY, dude. For realz.

Your personal prompter

Few things are more terrifying than drawing a blank when you’re facing a room full of people. Our pioneer ancestors used primitive tools such as cue cards, paper notes, and scripts, but today we have downloadable software such as PrompsterPro (for iOS and Android), PromptSmart (for iOS), TelePrompter (for iOS), and A Prompter (for Android).

These apps convert your mobile device into a swanky teleprompter and offer a variety of features:

  • Audio and video recording so you can practice and critique your presentation before you deliver it and then save the actual presentation for distribution afterward
  • The ability to upload, download, and edit the document you read from
  • Adjust the font size on the display so you don’t squint (and look shifty)
  • Timers that will keep you on track

PromptSmart also uses voice-recognition technology that actually FOLLOWS YOUR VOICE as you speak, adapting to your pace and even stopping when you do. WIZARDRY.

Start the countdown

There’s nothing groundbreaking about timers, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t useful. It’s easy to lose track of time, and it can get really uncomfortable when the exit music starts to play and you’re gently escorted off stage.

SpeakerClock (for iOS) is similar in appearance and function to the TEDTalk timer, with REALLY BIG DIGITS that you can see from a distance.

For Android, there’s the Toastmaster Timer that uses a traffic-light system that goes from green to yellow to red as you near the end of your scheduled talk time.

Of course, the absolute BEST thing you can do to become a more proficient public speaker is to, well, speak in public as often as you can. The butterflies in your stomach will probably still flutter around, but at least they won’t feel as if they’re as big as pterodactyls!

Travel And Tourism Public Relations: An Introductory Guide For Hospitality Managers

The opening chapter explains the recent growth of industry PR, and travel & tourism news coverage which today focuses on the considerable economic benefits of the industry. Additionally, it reviews the leading news media that covers the industry, the primary PR tools and audiences, and details the factors leading to PR''s new prominence across the industry. It also provides informative sidebars with lists of key industry print media, top travel agencies, plus a Travel Industry Association of America case study of a post-9/11/2001 campaign to restore American confidence in travelling. It also includes a composite definition of PR, and tells how PR is a discipline distinctively different from publicity, propaganda, advertising, and marketing. The author notes how, over the past decade due to economic conditions, PR in many cases has been integrated with marketing communications and played an important role in both strategic and tactical marketing activities.Following this overview, the ensuing five chapters examine communications model specifics that are of special importance to the industry''s major sectors: hotels/lodging establishments; restaurants; tourist attractions/destinations; and transportation services. Each of these sectors have their ownspecial messages, PR tools, and audiences. For example, meeting planners and travel agents are of most importance to hotels, while travel agents are of little importance to airlines and restaurants. Also included is a chapter about what travel employers should understand about PRThe chapters will be followed by appendices that will include:The top 30 U.S. Travel & Tourism Professional/Trade Associations; and the Leading U.S. Travel & Tourism Universities.

The Duchess of Cambridge Makes Rare Public Speech

HEALTH CHECK: The Duchess of Cambridge attended a Place2Be Headteacher conference in London and made a rare public speech on the topic of mental health issues.
A royal patron of the Place2Be charity, she spoke to teachers and leaders from schools across England, Scotland and Wales late Wednesday about ways to help children with mental health issues.
“I often get asked why I decided to spend time highlighting the mental health of children,” she said. “I imagine my answer might be similar to many of yours. I know that I was lucky. My parents and teachers provided me with a wonderful and secure childhood where I always knew I was loved, valued and listened to. But of course many children are not so lucky. Since beginning my work in areas like addiction, for example, I have seen time and time again that the roots of poor mental health in adulthood are almost always present in unresolved childhood challenges.”
She wore a gray Matthew Williamson shift dress with a jeweled neckline and cuff, an outfit she had sported in 2012 to a London premiere of “African Cats” for the Tusk Trust Benefit.
Earlier this week, the duchess also attended the 2015 Fostering Excellence Awards in BMA

Public School Pre-Fall 2016

DUBAI — Dao-Yi Chow and Maxwell Osborne of Public School took their pre-fall show to Dubai, showing Monday night in a specially constructed space at the Dubai Design District with a view of the world’s tallest building.

The designers described the collection as a contrast between technology and nature. “It’s about where they meet and the idea of permanence in nature giving way to this fleeting platform of new ideas and the constant demand for newness,” said Chow. “It’s an interesting contrast that we played with, especially to do this here in Dubai which is essentially a new city just plopped in the middle of the desert.”

The natural elements in the collection included Japanese Shibori print jackets with ethnic-inspired necklines. “We used the idea of traditional indigo dyeing, but playing with it in our way, mixing with sports tailoring. The jackets were contrasted with sports stripes hanging from the arm,” said Osborne.

The collection also brought mesh to the top layer of pieces, using a two-tone mesh fabric of navy and white, creating a 3-D effect when layered over the Shibori print. “We’ve always had it as an underpinning of mesh in our collections, but using it this way was a way

Is The Broad a Great Public Collection or “The Largest Vanity Project of Our Lifetime”?

Eli and Edye’s Gift to Los Angeles: The Broad Museum

“I have always worked on a public collection,” said Joanne Heyler, Chief Curator of The Broad Art Foundation and Founding Director of The Broad, to an assembly of international, national, and local media gathered in front of the much-anticipated new contemporary art museum and permanent home of the art collection of Eli and Edythe Broad a few days before its opening. Heyler has been with the Broads since almost the beginning, working with them for over 20 years to develop the collection and their philanthropic projects, culminating with the establishment of the impressive Broad museum. Heyler’s emphasis of the word “public,” however, might seem curious, considering that the collection belongs to just two people. But, as Heyler explained, the idea of “the public” is crucial to the museum’s mission of reaching the widest possible audience for its collection of contemporary art, and to that end, The Broad, situated in the heart of Downtown Los Angeles, offers free admission. “This is Eli and Edye’s gift to Los Angeles,” Heyler stated proudly.

The Broad’s “cool storage” room showing a work by Paul Pfeiffer. Courtesy of The Broad and Diller Scofidio + Renfro. Photo: Iwan Baan.

The practical matters of opening the collection to the widest possible audience, however, extend beyond the borders of Los Angeles. The Broad Art Foundation, which was founded in 1984, was established as a lending program, making the collection’s works available to museums and galleries worldwide. Over 8,000 loans have gone out to more than 500 museums and galleries over that period of 30 years. Now that the Broads’ collection has coalesced under the roof of the new museum, this dedication to lending will continue as a primary function of the museum, and has even been built into the building’s design.

The Broad museum’s lobby with interior veil. Courtesy of The Broad and Diller Scofidio + Renfro. Photo: Iwan Baan.

The building, designed by Diller Scofidio + Renfro, is predicated on the concept of “the veil and the vault”: the vault being The Broad’s large storage area for the collection, taking up most of the museum’s second floor; the veil, a porous exterior structure forming a diaphanous cover over the interior vault, allows a diffuse natural light to penetrate the 50,000 square feet of exhibition spaces, located on the first and third floors. Approaching the museum from the street, the visitor is essentially invited under the veil, into a cavernous space with the grey mass of the vault hovering overhead. A pod-like elevator, stairway, and long ascending escalator pierce the vault’s interior, allowing the visitor to pass through it, and, from windows in the stairwell, offering an unprecedented glimpse into the inner workings of the museum. As lead architect Elizabeth Diller pointed out, the design “turned a liability into an asset,” transforming the usually hidden storage area into a main attraction.

Installation of works by Christopher Wool and Jeff Koons in The Broad’s third-floor galleries. Courtesy of The Broad and Diller Scofidio + Renfro. Photo: Bruce Damonte.

In the expansive space of the third floor galleries, the viewer is initially greeted by a large open space, full of diffuse filtered natural light, surrounded by massive works by Jeff Koons, Christopher Wool, Mark Bradford, Marlene Dumas, Julie Mehretu, and El Anatsui. For The Broad’s first hang, Heyler took a “straightforward, wide-lens, chronological approach,” beginning with a room devoted to Warhol, whose Pop-Art presence is felt throughout the collection. Standouts of the inaugural exhibition include an eye-popping enclave of Ellsworth Kelly works; Anselm Kiefer‘s historic epic Deutschlands Geisteshelden (1973), whose evocations of receding woodgrain are echoed in a Mike Kelley piece (Infinite Expansion, 1983) on the opposite end of the museum; and alternately, life-like and imposing human figures by John Ahearn and Charles Ray. Areas of darker subject matter contrast with the Pop influences–animal bones in glass cases and a dead sheep suspended in formaldehyde by Damien Hirst share a room with a photograph of the Hong Kong Stock Exchange by Andreas Gursky, evoking themes of death and despair, interrupted by the obligatory inclusion of one of Hirst’s spot paintings. Works by certain artists, particularly John Baldessari, Cy Twombly, and Jeff Koons, recur to a great extent throughout the museum.

Installation of works by Neo Rauch, Robert Longo and Mark Bradford in The Broad’s first-floor galleries. Courtesy of The Broad and Diller Scofidio + Renfro. Photo: Bruce Damonte.

What emerges from the Broad collection is largely a paean to painting and sculpture, a majority, unavoidably it seems, devoted to male artists. This tendency is somewhat disrupted by the inclusion of some major installations on the first floor: a wool tapestry by Polish artist Goshka Macuga, complemented by two performers clad in the artist’s digital-printed Lycra designs; a powerful and elegiac musical video installation by Ragnar Kjartansson (The Visitors, 2012); Takashi Murakami‘s epic mural-sized painting In the Land of the Dead, Stepping on the Tail of a Rainbow (2014); and the experiential and existential Yayoi Kusama Infinity Mirrored Room – The Souls of Millions of Light Years Away (2013), which purports to plunge the viewer to an endless space of reflection among a quiet riot of blinking LED lights.

Waiting for my minute alone with the infinity of Kusama’s installation, I overheard an outspoken journalist denouncing The Broad as “the largest vanity project of our lifetime,” a sentiment that, given the rise of private museums and foundations established by prominent art collectors in recent memory, is not an unusual one to hold. While the Broad’s collection is by no means a complete, unbiased view of the developments of contemporary art (and who can rightfully claim that, regardless of their private or public affiliations?), this sanctimonious attitude willfully ignores The Broad’s potential outreach to the widest possible public, and the benefits that can be derived from it. The Broad’s location, as a new jewel in a downtown revitalization project that Eli Broad has helped orchestrate, is not entirely without self-serving attributes, but it also makes the museum accessible to a much larger proportion of Los Angeles residents, particularly those from lower income, inner city areas. The other notable free admission museums in Los Angeles–the Getty and the Hammer Museum–are located a metaphorical stone’s throw from each other in the exclusive neighborhoods of Westwood and Brentwood on the west side of Los Angeles. The Broad, on the other hand, is right in the heart of the city, easily accessed by public transportation coming in from all across the Southern California region.

Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti also addressed the crowd at the press preview that morning, boldly proclaiming “Los Angeles the contemporary art capital of the world.” Nodding to the mayor, Diller acknowledged that The Broad’s construction in Downtown Los Angeles is part of a “larger urban effort,” and heralds the increasing concentration of cultural attractions in the city center. If one were looking for a popular mandate for the new museum and for Downtown’s greater art presence, The Broad has certainly proved it, booking over 85,000 free tickets in advance of its opening. But if it truly wants to fulfill its mission to serve the public, as one of the most accessible free-entry institutions in Los Angeles, it should recognize this as a unique opportunity to introduce the wide lens of contemporary art, in all its facets, to a public that may not have the opportunity to experience it elsewhere. One can hope that through special exhibitions and new acquisitions (it estimates that it averages one new acquisition a week), The Broad will discover, and embrace, its obligation to the public to truly represent the art of our time.

Consumption, Media And Culture In South Africa: Perspectives On Freedom And The Public

Consumption, Media And Culture In South Africa: Perspectives On Freedom And The Public

This book is the first of its kind to bring together a collection of critical scholarly work on consumer culture in South Africa, exploring the cultural, political, economic, and social aspects of consumption in post-Apartheid society. From sushi and Japanese diplomacy to Queen Sophie''s writhing gown, from middle class Sowetan golfers to an indebted working class citizenry, from wedding websites to wedding nostalgia, from the liberation of consuming to the low wage labour of selling, the chapters in this book demonstrate a variety of themes, showing that to start with consumption, rather than ending with it, allows for new insights into long-standing areas of social research. By mapping, exploring and theorizing the diverse aspects of consumption and consumer culture, the volume collectively works towards a fresh set of empirically rooted conceptual commentaries on the politics, economics, and social dynamics of modern South Africa. This effort, in turn, can serve as a foundation for thinking less parochially about neoliberal power and consumer culture. On a global scale, studying consumption in South Africa matters because in some ways the country serves as a microcosm for global patterns of income inequality, race-based economic oppression, and hopes for the material betterment of life. By exploring what consumption means on the ''local'' scale in South Africa, the possibility arises to trace new global links and dissonances. This book was originally published as a special issue ofCritical Arts.

Moncler Hosts Photographer-Laden Party at New York Public Library

MONCLER’S SNAPSHOT: Sure, sure everybody’s a photographer in these iPhone-wielding days, but at Moncler’s party Thursday night that really seemed to be the case.
Fabien Baron, Hans Feurer, Lachlan Bailey, Craig McDean, Brigitte Lacombe, Mario Sorrenti, Charlotte Kidd, Terry Richardson, Olivier Zahm, Pamela Hanson, Roxanne Lowit (…you get the picture) weathered the rain to get to the New York Public Library. Some like Calvin Klein skipped the seated dinner for 200, stopping by just to check out the “Art for Love” exhibit. The Baron-curated images are also in a new book and an online auction — no small task.
Moncler chairman and chief executive officer Remo Ruffini explained, “For me, these are the 32 best photographers. I made my own list. It was easy to make the list, but very difficult to convince them.”
Guests eyeing the “Art for Love” images included Lily Kwong, Liya Kebede, Toni Garrn, Nan Bush, and Pyper and Lucky Smith.

Health Policy and the Public Interest

Health Policy and the Public Interest

This book is written with an acute awareness of the need for new insight to ensure (1) universal protection in basic healthcare; (2) providing choice; (3) efficient production and consumption of healthcare services; (4) financial sustainability of the healthcare system. Defining the public interest as the welfare of the “representative individual” with no vested interest who imagines himself to have equal chance of being anyone in society, this book explores alternative ways of finance and delivery, the optimal interface between the public healthcare sector and the private healthcare sector, and that between public insurance and private insurance. The book includes a theoretical but non-technical section that distinguishes between the stock of health and functional health, proposes a utility maximizing/behavioural framework to explain behaviour and the role of health policy and investigates the nature of risk and alternative insurance mechanisms. The book illustrates with a number of country studies, covering a large range of healthcare systems from the American and the European systems to various Asian systems as well as those of Australia and New Zealand. The survey of country experiences reinforces the theoretical conclusions about the role of the public healthcare sector and social insurance and that of the private market. The book highlights the importance of and the workability of “pricing right” and “capping right”: pricing standard or basic healthcare services at the right price can contain both demand-side and supply-side moral hazard and lead to more efficient production and consumption of healthcare services; capping annual eligible healthcare expenses will provide effective protection against financial risks. The proposal of lifetime healthcare supplement offers greater choice. Private caregivers and insurers supplement the public healthcare system by offering more choices and premium services, as well as additional protection.

Public Financing And Delivery Of Hiv/aids Care: Securing The Legacy Of Ryan White

Public Financing And Delivery Of Hiv/aids Care: Securing The Legacy Of Ryan White

Each year it is estimated that approximately 40,000 people in the U.S. are newly infected with HIV. In the late 1990s, the number of deaths from AIDS dropped 43% as a result of highly active antiretroviral therapy. Unfortunately, the complex system currently in place for financing and delivering publicly financed HIV care undermines the significant advances that have been made in the development of new technologies to treat it. Many HIV patients experience delays in access to other services that would support adhering to treatment. As a result, each year opportunities are missed that could reduce the mortality, morbidity, and disability suffered by individuals with HIV infections. Public Financing and Delivery of HIV/AIDS Care examines the current standard of care for HIV patients and assesses the extent the system currently used for financing and delivering care allows individuals with HIV to actually receive it. The book recommends an expanded federal program for the treatment of individuals with HIV, administered at the state level. This program would provide timely access and consistent benefits with a strong focus on comprehensive and continuous care and access to antiretroviral therapy. It could help improve the quality of life of HIV/AIDS patients, as well as reduce the number of deaths among those infected.

Jennifer Aniston Flashes Her Wedding Ring In First Public Appearance Since Nuptials

Jennifer Aniston made her first public appearance since saying “I do” Wednesday night in Los Angeles.

The 46-year-old star, who married Justin Theroux in a surprise ceremony at their Bel Air mansion earlier this month, hit the red carpet for the premiere of her new movie, “She’s Funny That Way.” Cameras caught snapshots of Aniston’s wedding ring, a gold and diamond band created by her friend and jewelry designer, Jennifer Meyer, according to Us Weekly.

The newlywed was greeted with congratulations and briefly discussed married life to reporters.

“It feels quite natural,” she told E! News when asked about using the term “husband.” She said Theroux couldn’t attend the premiere because he is “shooting ‘The Leftovers’ in Austin.”

Licked in the Lobby (public oral sex)

Licked in the Lobby (public oral sex)

Paula has a good, respectable job on the front desk of a hotel. Her horny boyfriend has a proposition for her; he wants to lie under her desk and watch her as she works. Of course, he doesn’t stop there, and soon Paula’s being licked in the lobby. Will she be forced to cum in front of the customers? Warning: This story is 3,400 words of pure red-hot filth, containing public sex, footplay, cunnilingus, forced orgasms and long-distance telephony. Excerpt: My idiot, wonderful boyfriend wants to come into work and sit under my desk while I work my shift. And okay, it’s true that nobody can see what’s going on down there unless you’re virtually on top of me. Sure, honey, the desk was practically designed for what you want to do. I’m still not doing it. What the hell am I supposed to do in this economy if I get fired? He won’t fire you, he said. Even if he does, you’ll find another job, he said. But I was firm. I put my foot down. I said no. I reckoned without his sweet, sweet tongue. That boy knows exactly what he’s doing in an oral capacity; whether he’s reading me the most ridiculous love poetry, kissing me tenderly, or working my clit to a screaming high, he’s got it. He could talk the President of Uganda into a night of hot gay passion with him (and he’d be prepared to follow through, as well; he’s so flexible when he thinks it’ll make me happy!) So I guess I shouldn’t be surprised that he eventually got me to negotiate some terms. He was just going to lie there, watch, and listen. Yes, dear, you can masturbate, as long as you don’t get the floor dirty. Yes, dear, I’ll go commando under my short business skirt. Yes, dear, I will trample your balls into a fine paste if you so much as consider the possibility of touching me until we’re back home and free. And so here I am, ready to work the Wednesday to Thursday night shift. I’m wearing just enough lipstick to look professional, without giving anyone the wrong idea. My hair is perfectly fixed.

French Parliament Passes Draft Law To Curb Public Health Cost And Fight Unhealthy Stereotypes

PARIS (AP) — Too-thin models, too much drinking, sexy cigarette packs: France’s parliament is cracking down on all of these in a sweeping bill designed to improve public health and trim public health costs — while tackling unhealthy stereotypes along the way.

The National Assembly, parliament’s lower house, voted 311-241 on Tuesday to approve the draft law. It now goes to the Senate before a final vote back in the assembly. The Socialist-led government hopes the bill will take effect by the summer.

Health Minister Marisol Touraine, the bill’s champion, said it is “crucial to tackle the challenge of aging and the emergence of new diseases” while preserving France’s generous and highly vaunted health care system.

Here’s a look at some of the key reforms:

ANOREXIC MODELS

In a measure that could cause ripples in France’s famed fashion industry, the bill would make it a crime to use anorexic models or encourage anorexia.

It would forbid anyone with a body mass index, or BMI, below a certain level from earning money as a model. The exact level — based on height and weight — would be defined later by decree if the bill becomes law.

Any modeling agency or individual who pays a model with a BMI below the designated level would face up to six months in prison and 75,000 euros ($ 80,000) in fines if convicted.

Some 40,000 people are estimated to have anorexia in France — 90 percent of them women, according to the Health Ministry.

PLAIN CIGARETTE PACKS

The government’s plan includes a measure that would require manufacturers to package cigarettes in plain containers by May 2016. Packs would have the same shape, size, color and typeset. Brands would still be mentioned, but would be restricted to a small discreet place on the packaging.

The government believes less attractive packaging would help discourage young people from starting to smoke. Around 30 percent of French people smoke — a habit linked to some 73,000 deaths a year in France, according to official statistics.

UNDERAGE DRINKING

People who encourage minors to drink excessively could face a year behind bars and a $ 16,000 (15,000 euro) fine.

The sale to minors of products inciting people to get drunk, such as T-shirts, would be forbidden.

Touraine, the health minister, has cautioned against the ills of binge-drinking, and has used the English-language term to describe the act of excessive imbibing over a short period of time.

As many as 49,000 people die every year in France from the consequences of drinking alcohol, according to a 2013 study published in the European Journal of Public Health.

Other measures, including requiring the labeling of alcohol-related risks in advertising, were scrapped during the Assembly debate, under pressure from the conservative opposition and France’s influential wine lobby.

CHILD OBESITY

In a step that would require changes to the business model of some fast-food chains, the bill would ban free-refill soda fountains in restaurants in a move aimed at combatting obesity.

Touraine, speaking in parliament, noted that the free-refill policy was “common in other countries, … is spreading in our country and could be attractive to young people.”

SUN-BED BAN FOR MINORS

Amid concerns about skin cancer, the bill would bar tanning salons from selling sun-bed services to customers under 18 years old or to engage in advertising targeting minors.

FACILITIES FOR DRUG USERS

The bill would allow for a six-year test period in which intravenous drug users would be given access to clean needles under medical supervision and in the presence of drug counselors.

The conservative opposition — which controls the Senate — has criticized the measure as a “very bad signal” to French youth, saying it trivializes the use of drugs.

Under France’s legislative system, the National Assembly has final say in the passage of laws — so even if the Senate alters or rejects the bill, it could become law.

Booked for the Evening Gala: Newark Public Library

2014-12-06-BOOKEDFORTHEEVENINGOCT2014.jpg

During a brisk October evening this past fall in downtown Newark, NJ, guests came out to attend a fundraising benefit for The Newark Public Library entitled “Booked For The Evening” and to celebrate The Library’s 125th Anniversary as one of the city’s premiere educational and cultural public institutions.

The Newark Public Library has served as an historical landmark anchored in the heart of the community for over 100 years, providing patrons and citizens with free resources and information to serve their needs, ideas, dreams and hopes.

Over many decades, the Library has welcomed residents from across the country and the world, serving as a global catalyst to help residents cultivate successful personal and professional lives. Currently, the City of Newark is embarking upon a new millennium resurgence of renewal and growth. With a newly elected mayor in office, The Honorable Ras J. Baraka, the city is undergoing rapid and innovative development. The Library is responding in kind to these progressive advancements. “In this environment, we are conscious of the changing needs of our patrons and we continually strive to grow and evolve to meet those needs…” says Wilma Grey, Director, Newark Public Library.

At the Booked for the Evening gala, the Library honored Newark native, Mikki Taylor, for her outstanding professional achievements. Ms. Taylor currently serves as the Editor-At-Large for Essence Magazine and is also an accomplished businesswoman, author and television personality. She is a highly sought after speaker who offers a message of empowerment that encourages women to own their lives, walk in their God-given gifts and honor their purpose. Born and raised in Newark, Ms. Taylor “is proud of this great city where her dreams were nurtured and her purpose began. She is proud to be celebrated by the Newark Public Library where she spent many of her childhood years preparing for her future.”

The evening’s special guest keynote speaker was Arianna Huffington, who is known internationally as the chair, president and editor-in-chief of the online news magazine, The Huffington Post, as well as for her extraordinary success in the field of politics and media. In addition to honoring Ms. Taylor, Arianna discussed her book Thrive, the third metric of redefined success and the need to live a well-balanced life which includes meditating and getting enough rest to prevent burnout so you can live and perform at an optimal level. Guests were gifted with signed copies of the book.

In closing out the evening, Newark Public Library Board of Trustees member Timothy J. Crist noted that the generous supporters of the event “give new energy and hope for the work that lies ahead…in continuing the Library’s mission of expanding horizons and changing lives.”

Essential Dental Public Health

Essential Dental Public Health

Dental public health is essential to the practice of dentistry as it puts dentistry in context within society and seeks to answer questions at a population level. This introductory book aims to stimulate the reader’s interest and encourage a questioning approach to dental public health issues and their relationship to clinical practice. Divided into four sections, the book covers the philosophy and basis of the subject, the epidemiology of oral diseases, oral health promotion and oral health services. Essential Dental Public Health serves as a practical and relevant overview of the subject. It includes summaries of the points made with ‘take home’ messages to apply to practice. Where appropriate, problems are included so that the student may learn by problem solving. Further reading lists are provided allowing information in related subjects that are beyond the scope of this book. The reader will gain an understanding of the principles of dental public health sufficient for an undergraduate dental student. The book provides material to fulfil their requirements but also provides and excellent introduction for anyone looking for more detailed knowledge.

Theater: ‘Fortress Of Solitude’ Soars At The Public

THE FORTRESS OF SOLITUDE *** 1/2 out of ****
THE PUBLIC THEATER

Musicals cover every topic under the sun: rebellion, forbidden love, politics, passion, war, peace, family, despair, death and of course love in all its forms. But friendship — that enduring aspect of our lives (especially in a world where marriages come and go) — friendship is not often at the heart of a show. It is the sweet center and driving force in The Fortress Of Solitude, a new musical at the Public based on the novel by Jonathan Lethem.

Friendship is the entire story of the first act, where Dylan (Adam Chanler-Berat), the rare white kid growing up in Brooklyn in the late 1970s, is rescued and befriended by Mingus (Kyle Beltran). This is a show with a lot going on, thanks to a rich and satisfying book by Itamar Moses. They cover race (of course) and the changing times and gentrification and music, always music, from the complex choral work that dominates many key moments to the convincing dives into pop, soul, rap and punk.

Yes, the story drifts into too familiar territory — with the more privileged white boy becoming a rock critic and the less privileged black kid slipping inexorably into dark times — and yes these good friends drift apart, which just isn’t fun. But ain’t that life? The show is shaggy and a little awkward as it crams in everything it wants from the joys of listening to music and breaking down one particular song to comic books to tagging to escaping bullies to girls. That’s part of the particular charm of this show. This is no polished, tourist-eyeing product. It’s an original, fresh and fascinating work and one of the best musicals of the year. It isn’t perfect and I’d love to see it again.

I can’t speak to the novel, which I haven’t read, but doubtless the show captures its spirit because there’s so much of that on tap here. The uniformly excellent cast brings characters large and small to life, from the girls on the block who skip rope and provide running commentary to record producers, back-up singers, and countless others. Eighteen actors are listed but they seem like many more.

It begins with Dylan moving into Brooklyn at the behest of his mom Rachel (Kristen Sieh). She wants to make a statement and be part of change, all those liberal Seventies aspirations, right down to her bell-bottoms. She also takes off, leaving her family behind for good. Sieh has a small role, but thanks to the excellent costumes of Jessica Pabst we immediately buy her as the sort of person who would take off and indulge herself at the expense of her son. Sieh is the sole weak voice in the show, but her character leaves a convincing void in Dylan’s life.

That lost boy gets by as well as he can, trying to avoid the local bully Robert (an excellent Brian Tyree Henry). When he’s not asking his somewhat hapless painter father Abraham (Ken Barnett) if when mom is coming home, Dylan is listening to the albums she left behind, especially a now obscure soul artist named Barrett Rude Junior (Kevin Mambo, impressively broken down).

Lo and behold, when Dylan is taken under the wing of another kid who doesn’t like to see him pushed around, it’s Mingus Rude (a haunting and winning Kyle Beltran). They become friends thanks to Dylan’s persistence and soon enough they’re talking comic books, hanging out all the time and becoming bolder and bolder about the graffiti tags Mingus is leaving on subway cars.

Okay, maybe I love the show because its central character is a freelance writer, a rock critic to be exact. But the first act truly soars as it captures the growing friendship of these two kids. Chanler-Berat was such a charmer in Peter And The Starcatcher. Here he captures the mildly geeky but endearing Dylan with quiet charisma to spare, proving himself a star, the best nerdy sex symbol since Anthony Rapp in Rent.

Barnett matches him moment to moment as the more complicated and conflicted Mingus. He’s got a dad sinking into despair and drugs, a granddad who gets out of prison and immediately starts hounding the local teenage girls when he’s not preaching hellfire (a commanding Andre De Shields with equally commanding hair) and not a lot to look forward to at school.

So many elements work beautifully in this first act, with every technical element doing their best as the show segues seamlessly from urban grit to a flashback of Barrett Rude Junior in his heyday (complete with a song that does indeed sound like a lost soul nugget) and always the sense of a community surrounding all of this. Scan the credits: every single artist involved is working in top form, right down to the orchestrations of John Clancy and additional orchestrations of Matt Beck that capture so many styles of music, often in the same elaborate sequence. (Kudos to the sound design of Robert Kaplowitz working overtime as well.)

But you don’t remember dazzle; you remember the characters, the way Dylan is quietly singing along to a song by Mingus’s dad and how it touches and amuses his friend, how Mingus is perplexed by Dylan putting all of his comic books into plastic sleeves, the passion when Dylan breaks down a soul classic during a lecture, the unself-conscious way they hold hands when “soaring” above the city as superheroes, tagging subway cars and wearing capes.

Of course, it ends, as childhood always does. Dylan and Mingus drift apart, starting with Dylan’s chance to switch to a better school. Act Two is less enjoyable as the link between these two vivid characters begins to fray and they are essentially apart. But the music is always there throughout the show, from Robert’s convincing rap to the spot-on mimicking of the Ramones on “High High High School” to shout-outs to almost every genre you can name that flourished in that era.

The signature style of the music and lyrics of Michael Friedman is not that effective and engaging display of chameleon-like ability. It’s the choral moments, the songs where one character is singing one song and another character is singing another and they overlap and come together, sometimes seamlessly, sometimes discordantly, but always with purpose and style.

This is a complex and rich show directed with style by Daniel Aukin and choreographed with grace by Camille A. Brown. Sometimes, one viewing of a movie or one reading of a book or certainly one listen to an album just isn’t enough to appreciate it fully. (Just ask Dylan!) I look forward to the recording of a cast album so I can take it in again and again.

In 2012, I saw the musical Giant at the Public and that big, bold, hugely appealing show should have jumped immediately to Broadway. It’s distressing to say the least that a work like that which “belonged” on Broadway hasn’t gone there yet. The Fortress Of Solitude is funkier, baggier, goofier, stranger and just as impressive. I don’t know its commercial fate and what life it’s going to have after this run. But I know its artistic fate: The Fortress Of Solitude will flourish.

Public Art: More Than a Background for Selfies

During the busy summer travel months, your Facebook feeds and shared slideshows are likely filled with photos of friends on vacation. Odds are those photos included public art: faces reflected in Chicago’s “Cloud Gate” (affectionately known as “The Bean”) by Anish Kapoor, beautiful nighttime shots of a Leo Villareal’s “Bay Lights” on the illuminated San Francisco Bay Bridge, or silly poses with Wall Street’s “Charging Bull” by Arturo Di Modica. We often photograph these pieces because they help us remember a space, because they make that trip unique and because we are moved, inspired or maybe even upset by their presence. Art plays an important part in our tourism experiences and public art especially helps us interact and converse with places throughout the world.

The term “public art” may conjure images of bronze statues of soldiers or busts of presidents. I still stop and learn from these works. But today, public art takes on a wide range of forms, sizes as well as scales and can be temporary or permanent. Public art includes murals, sculpture, memorials, integrated architectural or landscape architectural work, community art, digital new media and even performances as well as festivals. Nationally popular pieces include Christo and Jeanne-Claude’s “The Gates, Central Park, New York City, 1979-2005,” 7,503 panels of saffron-colored fabric that hung in New York’s Central Park in February 2005; the 2-acre swirling park “Connections” in Philadelphia; more than 150 painted murals showing the history and heritage of Joliet, Il. and pulsing LED portraits installed in Boston and its Harbor Islands.

Public art is more than just an attractive decoration — it is a conversation with the public, revealing a place’s or a people’s history, values and stories. The work serves as a way for communities to announce themselves as a unique place. Think of the Eiffel Tower or St. Louis Arch. Public art can serve as a tool for governments to dialogue and partner with citizens, showcasing creative uses of space and the spirit of communities. To preserve this conversation, 27 states and at least 300 municipalities annually allocate a percentage of all capital and building costs to acquire and maintain public art.

Additionally, public art is a substantial tourism boon. “The Gates” were estimated to have an economic benefit for New York City of $ 254 million, attracting over 4 million visitors to Central Park during what is usually its slowest tourism month. “The Bay Lights” installation is estimated to have a $ 97 million impact on the Oakland Bay area’s local economy through 2015. The dollars come in through tourism and job creation, as workers are hired for design, fabrication, engineering, lighting, insurance, security and installation.

As you plan future travel, you can select a destination specifically to see public art (such as Tampa, with its 560 public art installations), make it a point to find public art wherever you travel (like the exhibits of art + technology at San Jose Airport), or even find art in your own hometown. Several public art programs run smartphone apps or online digital maps and databases of their collections. Many collections can be searched by city and state on the websites Public Art Archive and CultureNow. Additionally, Public Art Network Year in Review annually recognizes the country’s most outstanding and compelling public art projects — you can search the database of recent honorees and see photographs of most of the artwork.

As the conversation about public art moves beyond classic statues to ever-changing digital creations, as murals morph from patriotic symbols to powerful found art, we have to ask ourselves: what is the public art of the future? What conversations do we want to have with our cities, our government, our tourists and one another in the next century? The pieces we leave behind will tell our stories of today. The pieces we fund, install and create will tell our stories in the future. That’s the power of public art.

Negotiating the Mediated City: Everyday Encounters with Public Screens

Negotiating the Mediated City: Everyday Encounters with Public Screens

This book is an interdisciplinary empirical investigation of how people interact with public screens in their daily lives. In more and more surprising locations, screens of various kinds appear within the sightlines of passers-by in contemporary cities. Outdoor advertisers target audiences which are increasingly mobile, public art uses screens to interrogate urban change, while postmodern architecture finds electronic imagery a suitable tool of expression. Traditionally, urban sociology research has assumed that people seek to filter urban stimuli, but recent accounts of public screens suggest producers design and position display interfaces site-specifically, so as to engage with those moving past. This study offers insight both into the dynamics of actual encounters and into the long-term process of how people learn to live with repeated invitations to consume media in public spaces. The book includes four cases: street advertising, underground transport advertising, and installation art in London (UK) and media facade architecture in Zadar (Croatia). Krajina shows that maintaining familiarity with everyday surroundings in media cities that change beyond citizens’ control is a temporary achievement–and a recursive struggle.

Public Art: Here, There, Everywhere

It’s not that often that we Angelinos park our cars and just walk. Several weeks ago, I found myself strolling through Downtown LA rediscovering, to my delight, a treasure trove of public art, which I talked about in a recent program. The audience response was surprisingly enthusiastic.

Glorya wrote, “Loved them all, and have never seen any of them… So many of us are always in a hurry and really do not take the time. Terrible shame.” Ann said, “…this city really IS such a great adventure.” And Yassmin sent me a note saying, “I will be taking a tour of Citigroup Center very soon. I had no idea this wonderful art was in my backyard!” Inspired by these responses, I decided to spend more time driving and walking through the nooks and crannies of LA in search of art in public spaces.

Visiting the Norton Simon Museum in Pasadena always puts me in a particularly good mood. Some of the most famous bronze sculptures by Rodin greet visitors at the museum’s entrance, including his The Burghers of Calais and Monument to Balzac. These sculptures are installed to maximum effect amidst the beautifully designed landscape. It’s interesting that another cast of Rodin’s Balzac can be seen at LACMA’s campus, though there, it is shown to a much lesser effect, being overwhelmed by nearby Chris Burden’s massive Urban Light.

I wonder how many of you have ever walked in front of Pasadena’s City Hall. The last time I did it was 15 years ago, when the new, gigantic sculptural portraits of Jackie Robinson and his brother Mack were unveiled there as a part of the Pasadena Robinson Memorial, a collaboration of three artists: Ralph Helmick, John Outterbridge, and Stuart Schechter. Somehow, I forgot how monumental these portraits are. Each of them is nine feet high and weighs 2,700 pounds. It is no surprise that people are constantly snapping photos of themselves in front of these formidable sculptures.

Not far away, in walking distance from Pacific Asia Museum, I literally stumbled upon the impressive life-size bronze sculpture of Christ being nailed to the cross. One wouldn’t be surprised to see such work standing proudly in front or inside of a church. But here, on the pavement in front of a modest-looking building, the crucifix is placed almost flat on the ground. Christ is held and pressed down by two figures, one of them poised to strike the final nail into Jesus’ hand. I looked around for a nameplate to identify the sculptor, but could not find it. After a little bit of research, I found out that the sculpture was commissioned by Fuller Theological Seminary and created by LA-based artist, Christopher Slatoff. So, I not only found an interesting public artwork, but also learned about Fuller Theological Seminary, with its beautifully landscaped campus.

Driving through Downtown LA along Main Street, I saw a rather dramatic mural of a single, moody cartoon-like figure decorating the wall of a rather nondescript commercial building. It was impressive enough to make me stop and get out of my car to snap some photos. Acclaimed Brazilian artist Claudio Ethos was commissioned a couple of years ago to make this 60 by 80 foot mural, which took him five days to complete – using spray cans, a few rollers, and only two colors.

Then, later in the evening, driving along Santa Monica Boulevard in Beverly Hills, I was struck by two sculptures – installed and lit to the maximum effect. In the daytime, it is easy to miss them, but at night they really shine. One of them is a figure of a sitting man, whose translucent body looks as if it’s made from metal lace. This is a sculpture by internationally known Catalan artist, Jaume Plensa.

A few steps away, there is a large, playful painted sculpture of twisting, dancing, and morphing flowers by Japanese artist extraordinaire, Yayoi Kusama, who is alive and kicking at the ripe young age of 84.

Public Health and Municipal Policy Making

Public Health and Municipal Policy Making

Focuses on the power which medical knowledge has had in legitimising the rhetoric that surrounds municipal policy making. This work looks at two 20th-century public health campaigns concerned with infant welfare and the prevention of tuberculosis, which were aimed at improving health but which also served to regulate urban life.

Circumcision, Public Health, Genital Autonomy and Cultural Rights

Circumcision, Public Health, Genital Autonomy and Cultural Rights

Circumcision is one of the oldest and most common surgical processes, being practised, for a range of medical, social and religious reasons, on up to 30% of males worldwide. It is currently being promoted by a range of health bodies as a means of tackling HIV in developing countries. Yet, there is significant concern about sexual, physiological and psychological effects and complications and its prophylactic effectiveness. In examining a case in which a failed circumcision was performed for religious reasons, the Regional Court in Cologne decided that the practice contravened the bodily autonomy of minors and was subject to the same legislation used to classify female genital cutting as assault. This, understandably, aroused serious concerns among various religious communities who practise circumcision. At the same time as religious groups seek to protect circumcision from comparisons with female genital cutting, there is a trend, particularly in post-colonial thought in the US, to revise negative understandings of female genital cutting by making cautious, positive comparisons with circumcision. This collection considers the apparent contradictions and complications of the contemporary status and deployment of the many forms of genital cutting, raising a serious, wide-reaching question: what scope should society have to impose physically invasive rites on people? This book was originally published as a special issue of “Global Discourse.”
