IN THE SPOTLIGHT: Queen Elizabeth II has handed honors to a clutch of names in the arts and fashion worlds as part of her New Year’s Honors List 2019. Honorees will receive their awards at Buckingham Palace at various times over the next few months.
Christopher Bailey is among this year’s honorees. Bailey, who served as Burberry’s president and chief creative officer until March, and who had previously been chief executive officer, will receive a CBE, or Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, for his work at the British brand.
This is Bailey’s second royal accolade: He already holds an MBE, or Master of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, which he received in 2009.
Twiggy has also been recognized by the British monarch. The model and Andy Warhol muse whose pixie cut defined the fashion of the Sixties, will be named Dame Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire.

Why Kate Middleton Doesn’t Have a Cameo in the Queen’s New Documentary (and Meghan Markle Does)

With the newest member of the Windsor clan, Meghan Markle, taking a starring role on the new Queen of the World documentary, focus has turned to whether Kate Middleton will be featured in the film.

The answer is not much. The royal mom of three was on maternity leave after the birth of Prince Louis in April when a lot of the filming was conducted.

With the Commonwealth being the theme of the documentary — and the British meeting of the heads of government from the 53 nations, called CHOGM, in April a central element — she simply wasn’t taking part in functions with the family at that time.

“Kate was largely out of action during the main filming,” an insider with the documentary says. “CHOGM was a focal point and she was due to give birth any minute then.”

Can’t get enough of PEOPLE’s Royals coverage? Sign up for our newsletter to get the latest updates on Kate Middleton, Meghan Markle and more!

But, don’t despair, Princess Kate is seen — just not speaking directly to the camera or in conversation, as Meghan, Harry and William are.

“There is film of events and receptions which she attended, so you do see her,” the insider adds.

In a clip from the upcoming documentary, Meghan is seen viewing her wedding dress for the first time since her royal wedding. A huge smile crosses her face as she looks at her bridal outfit from top to bottom, then touches her veil, which features hand-embroidered flowers from each of the 53 counties in the Commonwealth.

The same production company that made the documentary, which airs on HBO on October 1, did secure the royal mom’s first major TV interview when she spoke for the documentary, Our Queen at 90 in 2016.

Queen of the World tells the story of Queen Elizabeth’s impact during her extraordinary and record-breaking reign, and airs on ITV1 in the U.K. in two parts, starting on September 25th and on HBO in the U.S. on October 1.

Erin O’Connor, Paul McCartney Named in Queen’s Birthday Honors List

ROYAL ACCOLADE: Queen Elizabeth II has released an honors list to mark her official birthday, which was celebrated with the annual Trooping the Color parade in London, on Saturday.
Names in the fashion and entertainment industries including model Erin O’Connor, designer Sir Terence Conran and Sir Paul McCartney are set to receive accolades as part of this year’s list.
O’Connor is being recognized for her services to fashion and charity and named Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire or OBE.
Conran, the interiors designer best known for designing furniture ranges with Mary Quant and for founding the home furnishing stores Habitat and Conran, has been named a member of the Order of Companions of Honor for his services to design. This is not the first time Conran has been recognized by the Royal family; in 2013 he received the Prince Philip designers prize, an annual design award from the Chartered Society of Designers and the Duke of Edinburgh.
McCartney has also been awarded the Companion of Honor award, for services to music. The recognition comes 20 years after the former Beatle was knighted by the British monarch.

The Hidden Good-Luck Charm Sewn Into the Queen’s Coronation Gown – and 4 Other Secrets from the Historic Event

God save the Queen! Those were the shouts heard from inside Westminster Abbey on June 2, 1953, when Queen Elizabeth II took the Coronation Oath and officially became the ruling monarch of the U.K and the Commonwealth.

Although Elizabeth ascended the throne as a young 25-year-old princess on February 6, 1952, immediately on hearing of the death of her father, King George VI, it wasn’t until 16 months later on June 2, 1953, that she was crowned, such was the extent of the planning needed. Her first years as Queen are featured in the first season of Netflix’s hit series, The Crown.

Read on for five surprising facts on the 64th anniversary of the Queen’s historic day:

1. It Was the First Televised Coronation

Tech-savvy even back then, Princess Elizabeth was determined to have the ceremony broadcast (much against the disapproval of Sir Winston Churchill). It would be the first coronation to be televised (except for the anointing and the communion) and was broadcast in 44 languages. An estimated 20 million people gathered round their television screens (or those of their neighbors) to catch a glimpse of the pomp and ceremony of the momentous occasion. After the event, sales of televisions rocketed.

2. Her Gown Had a Hidden Good-Luck Charm

Trusted royal couturier Sir Norman Hartnell worked closely with Elizabeth to create a gown in the finest white duchess satin, richly embroidered with national and Commonwealth floral emblems in gold and silver thread. Encrusted with seed pearls, sequins and crystals, the designer added a secret detail for extra luck. Unknown to the Queen, Hartnell included an extra four-leaf shamrock on the left side of the skirt, which was positioned perfectly so that Her Majesty’s hand would rest on it during the ceremony.

3. Top-Secret Staff Were Recruited

There was a shortage of professional coachmen to help transport dignitaries to Westminster Abbey in horse drawn carriages, so millionaire businessmen and country squires offered their services – many dressing up as servants to help take people to the ceremony.

4. Footage Was Flown Across the Atlantic in Military Jets

To make the broadcast available the same day, Royal Air Force bomber jets known as Canberras flew film footage across the Atlantic so that the Canadian Broadcast Company could air it. It was the first non-stop transatlantic flight between the United Kingdom and Canada, and landed in Labrador.

5. The Romance!

Prince Philip was the first person to pay homage to the Queen after the Archbishop of Canterbury. After being lifted on her throne, her husband said, “I Philip, do become your liege man of life and limb, and of earthly worship; and faith and truth I will bear unto you, to live and die, against all manner of folks. So help me God.” He then kissed her crown and her left cheek.

Anna Wintour, Anya Hindmarch, Victoria Beckham Recognized in Queen’s New Year Honor’s List

ROYAL RECOGNITION: Queen Elizabeth II has released her annual New Year honor’s list, with names including Anna Wintour, Anya Hindmarch and Victoria Beckham set to receive accolades in the coming year.
Wintour, the British-born, U.S.-based editor of Vogue and Condé Nast artistic director will be named Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire or DBE, for her services in the fashion and journalism industries. She joins women including Vivienne Westwood, Judi Dench, Maggie Smith, Zandra Rhodes and Natalie Massenet.
The DBE will be Wintour’s second honor, as she was named OBE, or Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, in 2008. The Queen’s cabinet office noted that this second, higher accolade recognizes Wintour’s ongoing contribution to the fashion industry, and her help for emerging designers.
“Anna Wintour has been a tireless advocate for established and emerging designers. In the U.K. alone, she has promoted the careers of such talents as Sarah Burton, John Galliano, Christopher Bailey, Erdem Moralioglu and Christopher Kane,” said a spokesman for the Cabinet Office, the corporate headquarters of the British government.

Victoria Beckham to Be Named in the Queen’s Honors List

ROYAL ACCOLADE: Although Queen Elizabeth’s annual New Year’s honors list is yet to be released, it appears one person is already planning her visit to Buckingham Palace.
According to the Daily Mail, Victoria Beckham will be named an Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, or OBE, in the Queen’s New Year’s honors list, which is set to be released on Saturday.
According to the British tabloid, the British designer revealed the news to her family over the Christmas holiday, saying that she is “delighted and humbled for the recognition.” The honor recognizes Beckham’s contributions to the British economy and to charity.
The designer’s husband, David Beckham was handed an OBE 13 years ago for his services to British sport.
A spokesperson for Beckham did not return requests for comment.

The honor would be the culmination of a successful year for Beckham, who launched her first makeup collection in partnership with Estée Lauder last September and watched it fly off the shelves.
As reported last month, she is set to release a second cosmetics capsule collection with Lauder in the new year, as well as a skincare line with a niche beauty partner.

1964 World’s Fair Towers Could Be Torn Down As NYC Debates Future Of Queens Icons

NEW YORK (AP) — They were designed for the 1964 World’s Fair as sleek, space-age visions of the future: three towers topped by flying-saucer-like platforms, and a pavilion of pillars with a suspended, shimmering roof that was billed as the “Tent of Tomorrow.”

That imagined tomorrow has come and gone. Now the structures are abandoned relics, with rusted beams, faded paint and cracked concrete. As the fair’s 50th anniversary approaches, the remains of the New York State Pavilion are getting renewed attention, from preservationists who believe they should be restored, and from critics who see them as hulking eyesores that should be torn down. Neither option would come cheap: an estimated $ 14 million for demolition and $ 32 million to $ 72 million for renovation.

“It is the Eiffel Tower of Queens,” says Matthew Silva, who’s making a documentary about the pavilion in Queens’ Flushing Meadows Corona Park, comparing it to a remnant of the 1889 Paris Exposition that was also threatened with demolition before it was saved.

Designed by famed architect Philip Johnson, the New York structures debuted with the rest of the World’s Fair on April 22, 1964, and quickly became among its most popular attractions.

Visitors rode glass “Sky Streak” elevators to the observation deck of a 226-foot tower — the highest point in the fair. The two shorter towers, at 150 and 60 feet, held a cafeteria and a VIP lounge.

The pavilion’s 16, 100-foot-tall concrete columns supported what was then the largest suspended roof in the world, a 50,000 square-foot expanse of translucent, multicolored tiles. On the floor below was a $ 1 million, 9,000-square-foot terrazzo tile map of the state, with details of cities, towns and highways.

In the years after the fair, the pavilion was used as a music venue for such acts as Led Zeppelin, the Grateful Dead and Fleetwood Mac. In the ’70s, it became a roller skating rink until the collapse of the ceiling tiles, leaving only bare cables behind.

The towers, while still structurally sound, were abandoned as observation decks long ago for safety reasons. Their retro-futuristic look has been most widely known from its use in such movies as “Men in Black” and “Iron Man 2.”

Although occasionally opened for tours, the towers and pavilion — the last major structures still standing from the World’s Fair that have not been preserved — have largely served as a stoic landmark for travelers on the Van Wyck Expressway. Two pad-locked gates — one chain-link, one metal — keep the Tent of Tomorrow shuttered.

“It should be called the ‘Tent of Yesterday,'” says Ben Haber, who lives near the park. “This is not the Parthenon, it’s not the Sphinx, it’s not the pyramids. … So what’s so special that we should keep it?”

At the heart of the debate is the cost. While the city’s Parks Department commissioned studies on the cost of scrapping or renovating the complex, it is still unclear where that money would come from and, if restored, how the structures would be used. If the money comes through, work on the city-owned pavilion could begin as early as next year once officials make a decision.

Queens Borough President Melinda Katz has formed a task force dedicated to preserving the pavilion, noting that other structures from the World’s Fair have been saved, most notably the 12-story-tall metal globe called the Unisphere, the Hall of Science and the Queens Museum.

Among the ideas are to convert the towers once again into observation decks or an elevated garden or even a platform for bungee jumping, with the open-air pavilion turned into a performance space with a removable stage and bleachers.

While that debate plays out, a small group of World’s Fair buffs has formed to repaint the pavilion so it can be open to the public briefly for an April 22 anniversary event. The towers will still be off limits.

“I just loved this pavilion,” says 63-year-old volunteer painter John Piro. “And as the years went on I saw it decay and it just like tore my heart.”

Haber, the Queens resident, argues that nostalgia is fine, but the cost of saving the complex is just too much.

“Urban parks are the backyards for people who don’t have them — so they can sit on the grass, look at trees, flowers, water,” Haber says. “They do not want to look at glass, steel and cement structures.”
