DWTS’s Victoria Arlen Thought She Wouldn’t Make It to Her 16th Birthday After She Was Paralyzed By a Rare Condition

Victoria Arlen didn’t think she’d live to see age 16.

As she lay paralyzed in a hospital bed due to the effects of a rare autoimmune disease that left her bedridden for four years, the teen mentally prepared to die.

“You know when you’re fading away, and I just knew,” the ESPN host and Dancing with the Stars contestant says in the current issue of PEOPLE. “I couldn’t communicate, but in my own way I had to say goodbye to my family.”

But just three months after turning 15, Arlen woke up to find she’d regained control of her eyes.

“From there it was miracle after miracle,” she says of regaining feeling in the upper half of her body.

(Dr. Michael Levy, a professor of neurology at Johns Hopkins who has treated Arlen, says only a third of patients recover from transverse myelitis like Alren has. Dr. Levy says Arlen’s age and overall good health prior to her transverse myelitis episode was a major factor in her ability to recover.)

For more from Alren — including how she survived two years conscious but unable to move — pick up the latest issue of PEOPLE, on newsstands Friday

Ready to make up for lost time, Arlen set lofty goals for herself: first winning gold as a swimmer at the 2012 Paralympic games in London and then defying her doctors’ expectations by learning to walk again.

The latter goal wouldn’t be achieved until November 2015 after months of intense physical therapy, but that triumph allowed Arlen to set her sights on fulfilling her childhood dream of competing on Dancing with the Stars.

“This is the first year that I’m not fighting to get back what was taken away from me,” says Arlen, who spent her 23rd birthday dancing a rumba with Valentin Chmerkovskiy on the Sept. 26 episode of the ABC reality dance competition. “This is the first year that I can finally just live — and I’m going to make it a full life.”

Maison Margiela to Give Rare Glimpse Behind the Scenes

NOW YOU SEE IT: Maison Margiela is ready to lift the veil a little further on its creative process.
The Paris-based house, famed for its anonymous approach to design, will launch a new Instagram Stories series with the hashtag #MaisonMargielaInsideOut during the finale of creative director John Galliano’s women’s wear show, scheduled to take place at 11 a.m. on Wednesday.
The first in the series is a one-minute clip, directed by London-based filmmaker Sean Frank, that is being shot in the Margiela design studios in the 24 hours leading up to the ready-to-wear display. It will also be posted on the brand’s web site www.maisonmargiela.com.
In addition to revealing the inspiration and background of the collection, “Inside Out” will highlight Margiela’s new handbag, debuting on the runway. Further instalments will follow, all linked to the rtw activities of the house.
The concept comes on the heels of the Maison Margiela Artisanal couture show in July, which featured a decor showcasing the offbeat items with which Galliano surrounds himself while he works, as well as hair-and-makeup stations. The idea was to provide guests with an inside look at what goes on at the Maison.

The Duchess of Cambridge Makes Rare Public Speech

HEALTH CHECK: The Duchess of Cambridge attended a Place2Be Headteacher conference in London and made a rare public speech on the topic of mental health issues.
A royal patron of the Place2Be charity, she spoke to teachers and leaders from schools across England, Scotland and Wales late Wednesday about ways to help children with mental health issues.
“I often get asked why I decided to spend time highlighting the mental health of children,” she said. “I imagine my answer might be similar to many of yours. I know that I was lucky. My parents and teachers provided me with a wonderful and secure childhood where I always knew I was loved, valued and listened to. But of course many children are not so lucky. Since beginning my work in areas like addiction, for example, I have seen time and time again that the roots of poor mental health in adulthood are almost always present in unresolved childhood challenges.”
She wore a gray Matthew Williamson shift dress with a jeweled neckline and cuff, an outfit she had sported in 2012 to a London premiere of “African Cats” for the Tusk Trust Benefit.
Earlier this week, the duchess also attended the 2015 Fostering Excellence Awards in BMA

Eddie Murphy Nails Bill Cosby Joke In Rare Stand-Up Set

Eddie Murphy delivered a rare stand-up set with the very thing he didn’t want to do a few months ago: a Bill Cosby joke.

Murphy received the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor at the Kennedy Center on Sunday night, where he took to the stage for his first stand-up performance in 28 years. Back in February, we learned via a tweet from former “Saturday Night Live” cast member Norm Macdonald that Murphy had declined to portray Cosby on the “SNL” 40th anniversary special, not wanting to “kick a man when he is down.”

But Murphy wasn’t holding back on Sunday. “Bill has one of these,” the Oscar-nominated comedian joked, referring to the Mark Twain bust that honorees receive. “Did you all make him give it back?” (Several universities have revoked Cosby’s honorary degrees in the wake of his numerous sexual abuse allegations.)

Murphy then morphed into Cosby’s sing-songy lilt, saying, “I would like to talk to some of the people who feel that I should give back some of my motherf**king trophies.” Continuing in his best “Pudding Pop” voice, a callback to his Cosby impression from his famous 1987 stand-up film ”Raw,” Murphy reportedly said, ”You may have heard recently that I allegedly put the pill in the people’s stomach … If I ever see or meet this Hannibal Buress in person, I am going to try and kill this man!”

Days earlier, Murphy had explained his decision not to do Cosby at the “SNL” anniversary tribute: ”There’s nothing funny about it,” he told The Washington Post. “If you get up there and you crack jokes about him, you’re just hurting people.” But Arsenio Hall, who was at Sunday’s celebration, told the Post that Murphy discussed the potential Mark Twain bit with him and Chris Rock, eventually changing his tune. “[Murphy] said, ‘Because Cosby gonna get sick of this soon, he’s gonna get sick of people hating, and eventually he’s gonna have to say something,’” Hall said of Murphy’s decision. “And we were like, ‘That is funny, man. Are you willing?’”

You can see a snippet of the set around the 2:25 mark in this video from The Associated Press. A full broadcast of the event airs Nov. 23 on PBS.

Pierre Bergé to Auction Cache of Rare Books

BOOKISH TYPE: Pierre Bergé is to auction off his personal library, putting an initial cache of about 150 rare books under the hammer on Dec. 11 in Paris.
The former couture boss, 85, has amassed a collection of some 1,600 titles, including musical scores and manuscripts spanning six centuries. Six more auctions are to follow in 2016 and 2017.
Lots in the first sale, to be conducted by Pierre Bergé & Associés in collaboration with Sotheby’s at Drouot, range from the first edition of St. Augustine’s “Confessions,” printed around 1470, to William Burrough’s “Scrap Book 3” from 1979. Jean Cocteau’s “Le Requiem” from 1962 contains a personal dedication to Bergé and is estimated to fetch between 2,000 and 3,000 euros, or about $ 2,230 to $ 3,350 at current exchange rates.
Meanwhile, an autographed first edition of Gustave Flaubert’s “Madame Bovary” from 1857 and the original manuscript for his “Sentimental Education” could go for up to 600,000 euros, or $ 669,500.
A selection of about 60 works is to go on display at Sotheby’s in New York from Sept. 10-13, followed by showcases in Hong Kong from Oct. 2-7 and London from Nov. 6-9.

Cookie Lyon of Fox’s ‘Empire’ Sheds Rare Light on Black Women’s Incarceration and Reentry

Lee Daniels’s blockbuster Empire, an over-the-top soap opera featuring a prominent African American family in the rap world, has tackled a variety of subjects that most mainstream black shows fear to tread — such as homophobia and psychiatric illness.

Yet Cookie Lyon, the mother and ex-wife of the record label’s founder, sheds a rare light on black female incarceration and the challenges of prisoner reentry. Played by Taraji P. Henson, Cookie, is an old gangster with a heart of gold. She helped support her husband’s rap career and financed his fledging record label with $ 400,000 of drug money. When Cookie is arrested and goes down for seventeen years, her backstory shows that visits with her kids are infrequent and her old man just stops showing up.

True to Cookie’s storyline, in 2000, black women were incarcerated in federal and state prisons at a rate six times that of white women — with the War on Drugs responsible for a significant number of those arrests. Of course, contrary to Cookie the overwhelming majority were low-level addicts and drug mules. Roughly a decade later that rate has been cut by nearly 50 percent.

Unfortunately, the damage resulting from the nearly decade long apex of black female confinement is substantial.

Unlike Cookie’s character, because many of the black women in prison were single mothers at the time of their arrest, their children were displaced. Paralleling the prison system, in 2000, black children represented the largest group in foster care, despite being only 15 percent of children in the US. Because of mandatory parental termination laws after 15 months in care, a number of black mothers lost and remain at risk for losing their parent rights.

Still Cookie’s character also helps focus on another area of concern, namely the difficulties of prisoner reentry. The dysfunction in her relationship with Hakeem Lyon was both heartbreaking and hilarious — the scene where she beats him down with a broomstick for calling her a bitch comes to mind.

African American female prisoners face unique challenges trying to reintegrate into society and reconnect with their families. For starters, not only were roughly 60 percent of the women using drugs prior to their arrest, but 44 percent reported being physically or sexually abused and nearly 70 percent reported having been abused before the age of 18. Substance abuse issues and the fallout from emotional trauma are key factors, but also the women battle stiff employment obstacles, laws that make them ineligible for public assistance, a lack of healthcare and housing discrimination.

Currently, the recidivism rate for female offenders averages 45 percent. Lack of support and inadequate reentry programs are a huge factor, but so too is the intensifying parole regime, which has shifted from a rehabilitative model to one more closely aligned with law enforcement. In 1985, 70 percent of parolees successfully completed supervision, by 1997, that rate dropped to 44 percent.

Cookie Lyon’s character aside, we need to help more black women successfully reenter society. In order to do that reentry programs must tackle the social and economic challenges that this population faces and successful prisoner reentry has to become a much larger focus in the ongoing effort to arrest mass-incarceration.

Thieves of Book Row: New York’s Most Notorious Rare Book Ring and the Man Who Stopped It

Thieves of Book Row: New York’s Most Notorious Rare Book Ring and the Man Who Stopped It

No one had ever tried a caper like this before. The goods were kept in a secure room under constant scrutiny, deep inside a crowded building with guards at the exits. The team picked for the job included two old hands known only as Paul and Swede, but all depended on a fresh face, a kid from Pinetown, North Carolina. In the Depression, some fellows were willing to try anything-even a heist in the rare book room of the New York Public Library. In Thieves of Book Row, Travis McDade tells the gripping tale of the worst book-theft ring in American history, and the intrepid detective who brought it down. Author of The Book Thief and a curator of rare books, McDade transforms painstaking research into a rich portrait of Manhattan’s Book Row in the 1920s and ’30s, where organized crime met America’s cultural treasures in dark and crowded shops along gritty Fourth Avenue. Dealers such as Harry Gold, a tough native of the Lower East Side, became experts in recognizing the value of books and recruiting a pool of thieves to steal them-many of them unemployed men who drifted up the Bowery or huddled around fires in Central Park’s shantytowns. When Paul and Swede brought a new recruit into his shop, Gold trained him for the biggest score yet: a first edition of Edgar Allan Poe’s Al Aaraaf, Tamerlane and Minor Poems. Gold’s recruit cased the rare-book room for weeks, searching for a weakness. When he found one, he struck, leading to a breathtaking game of wits between Gold and NYPL special investigator G. William Bergquist. Both a fast-paced, true-life thriller, Thieves of Book Row provides a fascinating look at the history of crime and literary culture.

These Rare Photos From JFK And Jackie O.’s Wedding Were Found In A Darkroom

When John F. Kennedy married Jacqueline Bouvier on September 12, 1953, one of their guests told a reporter from Life magazine that the wedding was “just like a coronation.”

Now a rare set of photos from their stunning Newport, Rhode Island affair is being shared with the public before they are auctioned off later this month.

Thirteen negatives, which are believed to be unpublished, were found in the home of freelance photographer Arthur Burges, a backup shooter for the occasion. His family uncovered the keepsakes in his darkroom after his death in 1993.

Boston-based RR Auction is selling the negatives in their original folder along with a set of prints made from those negatives on their website. Bidding began on September 26 and runs through October 15. You can check out some of those photos below or visit their website for more information:

Adele Gives Rare Glimpse Into Her Private Life, For A Good Cause

Adele has achieved international superstar status at the tender age of 20 but she has managed to keep her personal life almost entirely private in the five years since. Until now, that is.

Promoting World Water Day on Saturday, March 22, Adele posted a four photo collage to her Twitter account. The clues we can glean are few but precious: Adele has a small fish tank, Adele looks positively stunning without makeup, and Adele’s 17-month-old baby boy Angelo is growing up so fast!

Gwyneth Paltrow, Britney Spears, Bar Refaeli and Katy Perry have also endorsed the important cause, aimed to provide clean water to the 800 million people who lack access to it, on social media this weekend.

A Rare Titanic Family

A Rare Titanic Family

Of all the families that boarded the doomed ocean liner Titanic together in 1912, only one fourth arrived safely in New York together. Albert and Sylvia Caldwell and their 10-month-old son, Alden, were one of those rare Titanic families. A Rare Titanic Family draws on first-person accounts from Albert and Sylvia to tell the fascinating story of the young couple who had no intention of getting off the “unsinkable” Titanic. It was, as Sylvia had been told, a ship that God Himself could not sink. They were saved by a combination of luck, pluck, Alberts outgoing nature, Sylvias illness, and Aldens helplessness. Their detailed story of the short life of the Titanic and their lucky rescue aboard the ill-starred Lifeboat 13 has never been fully told in Titanic literature. A Rare Titanic Family includes a photo taken of them on deck an unusual surviving souvenir sent to them after the disaster. But the trip on the Titanic was only one part of a bigger nightmare for the Caldwells. Albert and Sylvia, idealistic young Presbyterian missionaries from the American Midwest, had set out to Bangkok, Siam, on the very day of their wedding in 1909, eager to serve God and see the world. But things went awry. In the end, they fled Bangkok in what they described as a desperate journey around the world to save Sylvias health. Fellow missionaries, however, believed that the couple had been plotting for some time to renege on their contract and contrive an excuse to go home early, at great financial loss to the church. The trip around the world thus developed into a grim game of cat and mouse, with the Caldwells as the prey. Not even the loss of the Titanic ended the hunt. A Rare Titanic Family follows all the true-life plot twists in the biographical account of a family who successfully fled aboard the Titanic but never could get out from under the shadow that the ship cast over them.
