Slenderman Teen Found Not Guilty in Stabbing of Classmate by Reason of Mental Illness

One of two Wisconsin girls who stabbed a classmate in 2014 — in the name of a fictional Internet horror character known as Slenderman, they later claimed — will avoid prison after a jury determined Friday she was mentally ill at the time of the attack.

Anissa Weier, 15, was found not criminally responsible for her actions in the 2014 stabbing of classmate Payton Leutner, who was found by a passing cyclist on a bike path of a local park, fighting for her life and begging for help.

Leutner had been lured to the park on May 31, 2014, by Weier and fellow classmate Morgan Geyser. Geyser stabbed Leutner 19 times while Weier urged her on, investigators told the Associated Press. All three girls were 12 at the time.

Both Weier and Geyser told detectives they felt they had to kill Leutner, the AP reported, in an effort to become Slenderman’s servants — which they believed would protect their families from the demon’s wrath. They were both charged with attempted first-degree intentional homicide and initially pleaded not guilty by reason of mental illness or defect.

Weier made her first appearance in front of a jury of eight men and eight women on Tuesday in Waukesha County, Wisconsin, where her attorney, Joseph Smith, told jurors in court that her parent’s divorce caused a depressed that descended her into madness as she latched onto Geyser.

“Anissa’s broken mind caused her to lose touch with reality,” Smith said, according to the AP. “Anissa was under the command and control of a delusional disorder.”

That disorder, defense attorney Maura McMahon added in his closing arguments Friday according to the AP, left her believing Slenderman could teleport and read her mind. He would kill her or her family if she talked about him, she claimed.

Prosecutors argued differently, the AP reported, saying Anissa and friend Morgan Geyser “knew this was wrong, they understood what they were doing was wrong.”

On Friday, 10 of 12 jurors — the minimum required by law — voted Weier mentally ill, the AP reported. The same number (though not same jurors) voted she was not criminally responsible for her actions.

Prosecutors had recommend a 10-year prison sentence out of a maximum possible 25 years if Weier was not found mentally ill. Instead, she will go to a state mental hospital and not seek to be released for three years, according to local TV station WISN.

“We are disappointed in the jury’s decision,” the Leutner family said in a statement to PEOPLE. “The decision allows the assailant to petition the court every six months and request release into the community. Their decision also forces our family to relive this horrific crime every six months wondering if they will be released.”

“The potential release of an assailant that methodically planned and executed an attack in which our little girl was stabbed 19 times puts the community and our family at risk,” the statement continued. “It is deeply disappointing.”

Geyser’s trial is scheduled to begin on Oct. 16, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported. Her attorney told WISN they are hoping to negotiate a similar plea with prosecutors as was reached with Anissa.

A spokesman for Payton’s family previously told PEOPLE that she is “a strong young woman who is excelling in school and doing many things that a teenager would do with her family and friends.”

Zoë Saldana Refuses to Do Play Dates with Her Boys – and She Has the Best Reason

Being a mom of three boys has changed Zoë Saldana‘s perspective on many things — including the time-honored practice of play dates.

“Don’t invite us!” she told PEOPLE with a laugh at the grand opening of Pandora – The World of Avatar at Walt Disney World on Wednesday.

The actress, who is mom to infant son Zen and 2-year-old twins  Cy Aridio and Bowie Ezio, has previously gotten real as a mom about pregnancy cravings (note to her husband, Marco Perego: don’t touch her ice cream) and needing a strong support system.

When it comes to play dates, she says she would rather allow her boys to roam at home than inhibit themselves under someone else’s house rules.

“Our kids are free,” she says. “We’re rambunctious. We’re a loud family, and we don’t stop from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. And literally, we just don’t have any play dates. You can always come to our house, our doors are open. But we don’t ever want them to be exposed to negligence, or to someone getting angry with them for just being boys.”

The Guardians of the Galaxy star, who will reprise her role as a Na’vi warrior in the sequels to 2009’s Avatar, which inspired the new Pandora at Walt Disney World, says her sons also have inspired her to rethink how she views boys and men.

FROM PEN: Watch: Katherine Heigl Introduces Baby Joshua

“I lost my dad very early on, and, even though I had a lot of male mentors in my life, either by family or being friends or just educators that inspired me, I still went through my aggressive stage in my 20s of forcefully being a feminist,” she says. “You know, ‘I’m a feminist because I have to fight men and everything.’ And it’s not until the universe, with its way of being ironic, blessed me with raising men that I realized . . . I am so humbled.

“I couldn’t be more in awe of who they are, their natures as boys. We put so much pressure on them. Through our nurture, we tamper so much. So I’ve been leaning in on the books, and talking to parents of boys, getting any advice from fathers and mothers that we can grab. My husband and I are sponges, because we are determined to raise happy, stress-free men.”

Alec Baldwin May End Donald Trump Bit Soon For A Depressing Reason

This is no laughing matter.

Alec Baldwin has stated again that he might soon ditch his Donald Trump impersonation on “Saturday Night Live,” this time because he predicts viewers will be too depressed to see the humor.

Baldwin confirmed to the British Press Association on Thursday that he will continue his Trump shtick when he is available this season on “SNL,” which has seen a ratings revival due in part to Baldwin’s antics as commander-in-chief.

But all bets are off for next season.

“After that, I don’t quite know,” he says in the clip above. “I don’t quite know if people want to continue with that. If everything stays the same in the country as it is now, I don’t think people will be in the mood to laugh about it come September.”

Earlier in March, the actor warned that he may shortly pull the plug on his Trump gig because of the administration’s “maliciousness.”

Although Baldwin is reportedly writing a book as Trump, spoofing the president in yet another medium ― perhaps in film or onstage ― doesn’t appeal to the actor.

“I don’t know if I’d want to be Trump for more than a 5-minute slug of time on ‘Saturday Night Live,’” he said. “You’d have to pay me like an ungodly amount of money because it would be exhausting. It would be tiresome.”

College Student Wears Girlfriend’s Shoes For The Sweetest Reason

Mark Cadiz just won the boyfriend of the year award.

The 20-year-old college student attends the University of Hawaii, Maui, with his girlfriend, Vanessa. On a recent trip to campus, his girlfriend realized she brought the wrong footwear to class. She needed closed-toe shoes for her chemistry lab, but she wore tan sandals instead.

Cadiz, being the gentleman that he is, took his shoes off and offered them to his girlfriend so she could make it to class.

“We ride to school together almost everyday,” Cadiz told The Huffington Post in a message.

“I had to wear [the sandals] for three hours,” he added. “I had one class and they didn’t even notice I was wearing her sandals.”

Cadiz took a picture of his new outfit, posted it to Twitter on Wednesday, and quickly became the internet’s Boyfriend of the Year.

In just two days, Cadiz’s tweet was retweeted more than 35,000 times, liked more than 158,000 times and received a whole lot of curious replies.

He told HuffPost that his instant viral fame has made him feel “toetally different.” (Yes, he used that pun.)

“It felt weird at first because people noticed the little things. Like how I could fit her sandals and that my toe nails were long,” he said.

But many people applauded him for being such a generous boyfriend.

Cadiz also said that some people are being mean. His tweet’s replies are filled with people commenting on the fact that his feet are the same size as his girlfriend’s. In fact, so many people have asked that Cadiz and his girlfriend had to change their Twitter bios to address the issue.

“SORRY I HAVE SMALL FEET,” Cadiz’s bio reads. His girlfriend’s says, “shoe size: 7.5”.

Cadiz doesn’t care too much about the haters, though.

What matters most is that his girlfriend made it to her chemistry lab. And that his girlfriend doesn’t have extra-large feet. She’d like to remind everyone she’s a women’s size 7.5.

The FCC just gave you a reason to hold off on buying a 4K TV

The FCC just gave you a reason to hold off on buying a 4K TVOver-the-air 4K broadcasts are coming, but you might want to hold off at getting a new UHD set just yet. The Federal Communications Commission voted Thursday to open discussions on the deployment of a next-generation broadcast-TV standard that should offer picture quality up to 4K Ultra High Definition and better antenna reception than today’s over-the-air digital signals. Like 2009’s transition to digital TV signals, this upgrade’s primary sales pitch is about a better picture — not just high definition, but the Ultra High Definition (UHD) 4K resolution that today remains largely confined to streaming-video services and Blu-ray discs.

7 Times Aziz Ansari Was The Much-Needed Voice Of Reason

Though Aziz Ansari usually plays the silly guy on screen, he’s also known for calling out our serious injustices.

Whether it’s tackling racism in his “SNL” monologue or bringing attention to the sexism women face every day, Ansari has schooled everyone on issues in the no B.S. kind of way only he could.

In honor of Ansari’s 34th birthday on Thursday, we invite you to treat yo’ self to these seven times he was the voice of reason in the crazy world we live in.

When He Made His “SNL” Monologue About Combating Racism

While expectations were already high for the first-ever South Asian “SNL” host, Ansari managed to bring the house down with his monologue in January.

Ansari, whose parents are immigrants, made it clear that the country is, in fact, great. He explained that his family still loves America despite the divisive political climate and “they’re not leavin’.”

But he also acknowledged the rising xenophobia, racism and Islamophobia following the election and called on President Donald Trump to do something about it.

“Don’t tweet about me being lame or the show being lame. Write a speech. A real speech,” he said, addressing Trump. “Because these people are out there and it’s pissing people off. And I think he could make a difference.”

When He Reminded Us All To Call Our Parents

Ansari’s “Master of None” show on Netflix has been lauded for its commentary on race, sexism and the immigrant experience.

But for the actor, one of the biggest takeaways was his newfound appreciation for his mother and father.

The actor wrote about his experience casting his parents in the sitcom on The Huffington Post. Working with them ultimately strengthened their relationship and made him realize how important they truly are.

“In reality, I haven’t always had the best, most open relationship with my parents because we are weirdly closed off emotionally sometimes. But we are getting better,” he wrote. “And if you have something like that with your family — I urge you to work at it and get better because these are special people in your life … Enjoy and love these people while you can.”

When He Urged Men To Pay Better Attention To Women’s Experiences

In a 2015 interview with the Daily Beast, Ansari, a self-proclaimed feminist, said that men need to be more cognizant of the sexism women are subjected to.

Discussing an episode of “Master of None” that addressed sexual harassment, Ansari mentioned that it was actually inspired by a standup comedy show he did at Madison Square Garden. He said that, unfortunately, many men in the audience appeared unaware of the amount of harassment that women regularly receive.

Ansari asserted that it’s necessary for men to take action and learn.

“I thought it was interesting that this is happening, yet so many people are unaware of it,” he told the outlet. “What I’ve learned, as a guy, is to just ask women questions and listen to what they have to say. Go to your group of female friends and ask them about times they’ve experienced sexism at their job, and you’ll get blown away by the things they tell you.”

When He Explained How Ridiculous It Was To Be On The Fence About Voting

During this past election cycle, many celebrities came out to urge citizens to fulfill their civic duties. But no one quite did so like Ansari.

In a video by climate change advocacy group NextGen Climate, the actor boiled down exactly how crucial it was to get out to the polls.

“What the f**k do you need?” Ansari said in the video, later adding: “There’s a f**king guy running that says he hates brown people. That’s not enough?”

When He Called Out Hollywood For Limiting Roles For Asians To Stereotypes

Asians hardly nab any speaking roles in Hollywood. When they do, they’re often cast as tropes. And Ansari wasn’t shy about bringing this up around a group of industry vets.

During a The Hollywood Reporter roundtable discussion featuring several actors, including Anthony Anderson and Jeffrey Tambor, Ansari spoke about how many viewers were surprised to see actors of diverse backgrounds playing characters who deviated from stereotypes on “Master of None.” Usually, this isn’t the case.

“A lot of times when people write for Indian actors or Asian actors or anybody somewhat different, it is insulting because they have a certain view of, “… Oh, this Indian guy, let’s put him in the cab or in the market,’” he said. “Let’s not make him the guy who is this woman’s love interest,” or something like that, ‘:et’s get the white guy for that, of course.’”

When He Wrote A Sobering Op-Ed About Islamophobia In The New York Times

Back in June, the comedian wrote a piece, entitled “Why Trump Makes Me Scared for My Family,” about how Islamophobic rhetoric during the election cycle has affected his family and others of Muslim backgrounds.

Following Trump’s offensive tweet about Muslims after the Orlando shooting, Ansari, the son of Muslim immigrants, broke down why hate speech is so harmful to those of the faith. And also why it’s just absurd.

“The overwhelming number of Muslim Americans have as much in common with that monster in Orlando as any white person has with any of the white terrorists who shoot up movie theaters or schools or abortion clinics,” he wrote.

When He Dragged Rupert Murdoch For Tweeting Islamophobic Comments

After the Charlie Hebdo attacks in Paris, Rupert Murdoch tweeted inflammatory comments about Muslims around the world being held responsible for the actions of extremists. And Ansari unleashed a Twitter rant.

The actor flipped the script on Murdoch, and launched the hashtag “#RupertsFault.” Ansari tweeted about incidents relating to the Christian community and how the billionaire could be responsible for them, showing the flaw in Murdoch’s logic.

Nicki Minaj Says ‘Racism’ Is The Reason This Designer Won’t Take Her Call

Giuseppe, what’s good?

Nicki Minaj put the acclaimed Italian luxury shoe designer Giuseppe Zanotti on blast Friday after the brand’s PR people apparently refused to take Minaj’s call.

The rapper unleashed a tweetstorm about the incident, and here’s how it went down:

[Editor’s note: Minaj did wear the sneakers, though it appears she wore them for Glamour in 2011.]

The 34-year-old entertainer’s problems with Zanotti arose when she found out the designer was making capsule collections with other artists (most recently Zayn Malik and Jennifer Lopez), which would presumably give the collaborator a share of the shoe’s profits.

Minaj claimed that because she was black, she could only “inspire” Zanotti, but not partner with him:

Minaj retweeted a fan’s photo of some of the “Nicki” shoes that show up when you search for them in the designer’s collection:

Toward the end of her Twitter call-out, Minaj said she wouldn’t permit this “racism and disrespect.” She called on her fans to start Tweeting or Instagramming the hashtag #GiuseppeWhatsGood, a reference to her famous line to Miley Cyrus at the MTV Awards.

Soon enough, her #Giuseppe hashtag was trending on Twitter:

Minaj again clarified to fans that is wasn’t about the money, “just the disrespect:”

UPDATE, 3:21 p.m.:  Zanotti appears to have taken the “Nicki” shoes down from his website, which led to another round of tweets from Minaj:

The Huffington Post reached out to Minaj and Zanotti and will update this post accordingly.

‘South Park’ Guys To ‘Back Off’ Mocking Trump For A Sad Reason

South Park” is done with Trump ― at least for the moment.

The show’s creators, Trey Parker and Matt Stone, said in an Australian interview Thursday that they’ve decided to “back off” on satirizing President Donald Trump because his administration is already creating tough-to-top comedy.

“It’s really tricky now because satire has become reality,” Parker told the show “7.30.”

“It’s really hard to make fun of,” Parker continued. “We were really trying to make fun of what was going on but we couldn’t keep up … and what was actually happening was way funnier than anything we could come up with.”

“So we decided to kind of back off and let them do their comedy and we’ll do ours,” he said.

Stone added that fans have told them that they have “all this good material” as if the two should be happy about it. “It doesn’t feel that way,” Stone said.

In any case, the pair won’t be working on any new episodes for several months.

Watch This Guy Count To 100,000 For No Reason Whatsoever

If you’ve got 24 hours to spare, you could always entertain yourself by watching this video of YouTuber MrBeast counting up to 100,000.

MrBeast admits he only did it because he was “bored,” and it may sound a tedious prospect ― but it had garnered more than 6.5 million views by Saturday morning.

It could be worse, however, as the American YouTuber says he actually spent a total of 40 hours counting upwards ― and sped certain sections of the final video up because his editing software caps the limit at 24 hours.

“This is the most I’ve ever tortured myself,” MrBeast wrote in a caption at the start of the clip, which he posted online Sunday.

While the sheer number of hits that the video is garnering undoubtedly prove it’s a viral smash, it’s probably best you don’t try this at home ― as a lack of sleep can seriously harm your health.

The Huffington Post has reached out to MrBeast for further information, but in the meantime it appears he’s already planning his next mega-hit:

Gigi Hadid Is Apologizing For Her Melania Trump Impression, For Some Reason

Gigi Hadid kicked off the American Music Awards with a brutal, spot-on impression of Melania Trump that some people weren’t too happy about. With co-host Jay Pharaoh standing beside her as Donald Trump, Hadid mocked the Republican National Convention speech in which Melania plagiarized first lady Michelle Obama.

The 21-year-old model addressed the somewhat controversial takedown in a handwritten note to her followers on Monday.

“I was honored to host the AMA’s last night and to work with some of the most respected writers in the business,” Hadid said in the note, which was posted to Twitter. “I removed or changed anything in the script that I felt took the joke too far, and whether or not you choose to see it, what remained was done in good humor and with no bad intent.”

The model finished her note by adding: “I too have been the center of a nationally televised comedy skit that poked fun at my actions, and was able to find the humor in it. I believe Melania understands show business and the way shows are written and run. I apologize to anyone that I offended & have only the best wishes for our country.”

It’s unclear why Hadid felt the need to apologize for her opening act.

Pharaoh also addressed the controversy in a Facebook post on Monday. The former “Saturday Night Live” star compared the horrific names slung at Obama during her time in the spotlight to Melania’s milder treatment.

“Over the last 8 years the beautiful Michelle Obama has been the victim of excessive slurring!” Pharaoh wrote. “The Beautiful Flotus has been called Ape, Gorilla, Monkey, Manish, Ugly, Disgusting,”Not fit to be in the whitehouse”, always physically attacked by the general populous, nobody really snaps about it!”

A large body of research shows that Millennials are significantly less religious than previous generations of young Americans. But as to whether the lack of religion seen in today’s Gen Y’ers (born between 1980 and the mid-1990’s) is transient or lasting, scientists aren’t sure.

But now a new review of surveys of more than 11 million adolescents, conducted over the course of almost 50 years, suggests that the religion divide between Millennials and their predecessors is a true generational one. According to the data, Millenials are much less interested in organized religion — and also less interested in spirituality in general.

“Unlike previous studies, ours is able to show that Millennials’ lower religious involvement is due to cultural change, not to Millennials being young and unsettled,” Dr. Jean Twenge, a psychologist at San Diego State University and of the researchers, said in a written statement.

Twenge is referring to studies like a 2010 Pew survey — which suggested that people may consider religion to be more important as they get older — and a 2014 survey that suggested Millennials do have a strong sense of faith in God, despite identifying less with organized religion.

Religion’s decline. For the new study, the researchers reviewed four surveys conducted between 1966 to 2014 and involving 11.2 million American adolescents between the ages of 13 to 18. They found that Millennials were less likely to attend services, less likely to say religion was important in their lives, and less approving of religious organizations than Boomers and Gen X’ers were at the same age.

Millennials “were also less likely to describe themselves as spiritual, suggesting that religion has not been replaced by spirituality,” Twenge told The Huffington Post in an email.

The decline in religiosity was found to be greater among young women than young men. The decline was also found to be greater among Whites than Blacks, and among Northeasterners than Southerners.

A cultural shift. What explains the religious declines? Twenge believes the changes may reflect a growing emphasis on individualism in U.S. culture.

“We found that religious involvement was low when individualism was high,” she said in the email. “Individualism is a cultural system that places more emphasis on the self and less on social rules. Individualism can conflict with religion, especially as religion usually involves following certain rules and being part of a group.”

As for whether the decline is a good thing or a bad thing, she said “I’d rather leave it up to others to decide.”

Whatever the reason, there’s no doubt “this is a time of dramatic change in the religious landscape of the United States,” as the researchers wrote in a paper describing the research, which was published online on May 11 in the journal PLOS ONE.

The Real Reason Your Sandals Are Hurting Your Feet

Sandals should be so comfortable you can live in them all summer, but we’ve all been subject to the pinching, squeezing, and blistering from the wrong pair.

New brand Eight Fifteen (from the people behind Seychelles) is out to solve the summer conundrum. For the debut line, the designers worked with insole company Ortholite to utilize techniques previously used only in athletic shoes. Here, Eight Fifteen design director Gabriel Morales and president Sari Ratsula weigh in on shopping for comfortable and chic sandals.

blogger-sandals-eight-fifteen

Here’s What to Look for in a Comfortable Pair of Sandals:

The Footbed: When it comes to maximizing comfort, look for a rounded insole and a footbed that’s no higher than 22 millimeters whether it’s a flat, heel, or wedge (the conversion works out to being a touch under an inch). “It’s the most comfortable height for long-term walking and standing,” Ratsula said. “Flat sandals seem so comfortable, but most of them are too flat and hard to wear for long. Make sure the outsole is thick enough to support your feet.”

Strap Placement: Thin straps across the top of the foot should be affixed to the sole in between the knuckle of the big toe and the area where the big toe curves in. “A wider strap will go behind the big-toe knuckle and angle slightly further back when moving across the top of the foot,” Morales advised.

Strap Type: Multistrap sandals are having a moment, but not all are straps are created equal. “Straps that are too skinny or tubular are often a reason for pain,” Morales said, suggesting that you skip heavy embellishments with stones, sequins, or rhinestones. Your best bet is a flat, natural leather strap that’s no smaller than a quarter of an inch.

The Ankle Rule: The final factor the pair ID’ed as being crucial for comfort is an adjustable ankle strap. “Ultimately any sandal should have 3 millimeters of space between strap and skin. The foot needs a little play room to avoid cutting off circulation, but you don’t want it so loose that the skin gets rubbed.”

Yet Another Reason Advertisers Should Embrace Body Diversity

Academic studies can be fascinating… and totally confusing. So we decided to strip away all of the scientific jargon and break them down for you.

The Background
When it comes to women’s bodies, academics have identified a “tyranny of slenderness” in contemporary culture. This “tyranny” is perpetuated through the ultra-thin models almost exclusively featured in ads. But while advertisers have defaulted to the thin ideal, research has yet to prove conclusively that this tactic actually sells more stuff. (Research has been able to prove that looking at all of those unattainable bodies reinforces the thin ideal and makes women feel bad, so there’s that.)

The Setup
In a recently published study, researchers from Baylor University wanted to see if the “thin sells” maxim made sense, so they surveyed 239 women ages 16 to roughly 65 to find out how much each woman internalized the thin ideal. Then, they randomly divided the women into three groups to see if they would buy handbags based off of particular advertisements. One group was shown five ads for handbags with “skinny” models and another group was shown five handbag ads featuring “average size” models (these were the “skinny” models Photoshopped to look a bit heavier). The last group was shown ads with no models, just handbags. The researchers also collected their basic demographic information, as well as each woman’s body mass index.

The Findings
Of the 239 women in the sample, only 30 percent were what the researchers called “high internalizers” who fully subscribed to the thin ideal. The other 70 percent were either ambivalent (45 percent) or “low internalizers” who rejected the thin ideal (25 percent). Ads with ultra-thin models only convinced women who were “high internalizers” to buy the handbags; otherwise model body size had no direct impact on the effectiveness of an ad — the “average size” models worked just as well as the “skinny” models. Fun facts about those “high internalizers”: These women were younger, consumed more media, earned more money and were generally unhappier with their bodies than the other women in the study.

The Takeaway
If, as this study would have you believe, advertisers pander to the insecurities of a small percentage of women, then also they’re likely alienating 70 percent of female consumers. It seems that a wider range of bodies are just as effective, if not more, at selling products, so perhaps that’s incentive enough for advertisers to embrace body diversity on a wider scale.

Until that actually happens, it might be helpful for women to keep in mind that previous research has shown that only 5 percent of women can actually achieve the thin ideal — just something to consider while you’re being bombarded with nearly 3,000 ads on a daily basis.

Here’s The Reason Charlie Sheen Wasn’t In The ‘Two And A Half Men’ Finale

The return of Charlie Sheen to “Two and a Half Men” has been speculated about for months. And the show’s series finale, “Of Course He’s Dead,” included tons of Sheen references. Everything seemed like it was building up to a comeback. Then, it didn’t happen.

Sheen did, in fact, tease an “anticipated” cameo on Twitter, but it turns out that was for his upcoming appearance on “The Goldbergs.”

So what happened? Following the end of the series finale and its absence of a certain rock star from Mars, a vanity card from executive producer Chuck Lorre ran on-air explaining the situation:

I know a lot of you might be disappointed that you didn’ t get to see Charlie Sheen in tonight’ s finale. For the record, he was offered a role. Our idea was to have him walk up to the front door in the last scene, ring the doorbell, then turn, look directly into the camera and go off on a maniacal rant about the dangers of drug abuse. He would then explain that these dangers only applied to average people. That he was far from average. He was a ninja warrior from Mars. He was invincible.

And then we would drop a piano on him.

We thought it was funny.

He didn’t.

Instead, he wanted us to write a heart warming scene that would set up his return to primetime TV in a new sitcom called The Harpers starring him and Jon Cryer.

We thought that was funny too.

Despite the lack of warlocks, the finale pretty much had everyone else you can think of: John Stamos, Arnold Schwarzenegger and even Angus T. Jones. And though there was no Sheen, that didn’t stop his former character, Charlie Harper, from coming back in animated form:

Lorre and Sheen, of course, had a historic fallout that gave us memorable phrases like “winning” and “tiger blood” and even led to Sheen’s character being killed off from the show (or so we thought). But as the vanity card shows, it appears the two sides just couldn’t agree on how a comeback would be handled.

As a final ode to the show and the Sheen saga, the last moments of the series showed a Sheen body double getting a piano dropped on top of him, supposedly killing the character for good. Soon after, Lorre appeared and said, “Winning,” right before a piano dropped on him, too.

Jimmy Fallon Explains The Reason For Netflix’s Countdown Between Episodes

Have you ever wondered why Netflix has that countdown between episodes? Well, that worrisome thought will never interrupt your binge-watching again.

While writing his weekly “Thank You Notes,” Jimmy Fallon finally explained the reason for the streaming service’s timer. Apparently, Netflix does it just to mess with us. The company knows we’re going to keep watching, and they want us to know that they know.

For the record, Netflix does give you the option to opt out of automatically playing the next episode. It’s currently available on a number of devices.

But if you haven’t heard, the new season of “House of Cards” is coming out next month, and Netflix has plans to premiere up to 20 new shows or new seasons of original shows a year. So really, why bother?

“The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” airs weeknights at 11:35 p.m. ET on NBC.

This Is The Mathematical Reason All Hipsters Look The Same

Hipsters are a strange, plaid-wearing paradox: the term is meant to denote someone who’s different from the norm, and yet, why do they — in their flannel, beanies and combat boots — all seem to look exactly alike?

Jonathan Touboul, a mathematical neuroscientist at the Collège de France in Paris, explores this question in a new paper, “The Hipster Effect: When Anticonformists All Look the Same.”

hipster

In the study, Touboul uses many complex mathematical formulas to explain the homogenous hipster phenomenon. (It’s tricky stuff, and “a background in nonlinear dynamics certainly helps,” notes the Washington Post’s Jeff Guo.)

But, essentially, Touboul concludes that when humans analyze mainstream trends, there’s a delay in how quickly they detect those trends — and if the delay is long enough, people who seek to oppose the mainstream trends will end up opposing them in the same way.

“If you take large sets of interacting individuals — whether hipsters, stock traders or any group that decides to go against the majority — by trying to be different, they will ultimately all do the same thing at the same time,” Touboul told Vocativ. “The reason for that is the time it takes for an individual to register the decisions of others. You cannot be aware of what other people decide in real time, it takes a little while.”

Touboul also concludes that hipsters’ ability to recognize the trends of other hipsters is proportional to their distance from one another.

“Synchronization among hipsters depends on the distribution, in space, of each individuals,” Trouboul writes.

In other words, when you throw on your skinny jeans and oversized glasses in the privacy of your apartment you share with your preppy roommate, you feel totally original — but once you get to your local artisan coffee shop, there’s a high chance your Warby Parker frames will match those of the hipster sipping a latte next to you.

There is, however, one major drawback to the study, the Washington Post reports:

Here is where you might object that Touboul’s model oversimplifies something. In real life, there are a million ways to be nonconformist. You can be goth; you can be preppy; you can be grunge. Touboul’s model doesn’t quite explain the current hipster obsession with scraggly beards and undercuts. He admits as much. “The brain is more complex than the model I looked at, and of course hipsters are more complex,” he said.

Of course they are. All of them, at once.

Read the entirety of Touboul’s study to learn more.

Ariana Grande Performs ‘Break Free’ On ‘SNL,’ Wears Cat Ears Again For No Discernible Reason

Ariana Grande performed “Break Free” on “Saturday Night Live” last night while inexplicably wearing cat ears. It’s not October yet. This was not an early Halloween performance or even a cat-themed performance. Although, it is a thing she has done before and presumably will continue to do without explanation. And so, it seems that Ariana Grande wearing cat ears is just another thing we have to accept, much like Ariana Grande wearing her hair in a high ponytail and the impermanent nature of human existence. Watch her super fun performance below.

Actress Ali MacGraw has been married and divorced three times. Her first marriage to college sweetheart Robin Hoen lasted a year and a half. In 1971, on the heels of Love Story’s success, Ali married legendary producer Robert Evans and gave birth to her only son, Josh. Two years later, she and Robert broke up after Ali began a public affair with screen icon Steve McQueen. Steve and Ali divorced in 1978 after five tumultuous years.

Ali says her marriages all ended for the same reason: She never said who she really was. Looking back, Ali admits she had an arrogant approach to marriage. “It was, ‘Why can’t you read my mind about what I’d like and what I wouldn’t like?'” she says. In the video above, Ali reflects on the biggest mistake she made in her relationships.

A Reason to Watch Saturday Night Live Again

Just a day after Saturday Night Live announced the midseason addition of Sasheer Zamata to the cast, and still weeks prior to her scheduled debut, at least one Hollywood critic was already scribbling an asterisk by Sasheer’s name.

*Token, undeserving, diversity hire.

SNL‘s decision to cast a Black woman for the first time in seven years — the fifth Black woman in the show’s 39-year history — was dismissed as a “discriminatory PR stunt,” and an overreaction to a few “isolated complaints.”

“If SNL standards were relaxed,” the critic wondered aloud, “this special initiative is going to look misguided in retrospect.”

I read the article and cringed. It’s precisely this type of patronizing mentality from industry decisionmakers, who in 2014 are still largely lily white, that underlies Hollywood’s continued undervaluation of both Black talent and Black audiences. It is an unacceptable status quo.

I, for one, plan to watch the show Saturday night for the first time in a long time, and will be rooting for Ms. Zamata in her major television debut. Although this young comedian will take the stage under a huge spotlight, I applaud Lorne Michaels and NBCUniversal’s willingness to take an innovative approach to fill a critical void that their traditional casting process left empty for too long.

Back in November, we at ColorOfChange.org sent a letter to Lorne Michaels raising concerns about recent casting decisions, as well as SNL’s history of problematic portrayals of Black women. We sat down with executives at NBCUniversal just before Thanksgiving to discuss those concerns in greater detail, share a representative selection of feedback gathered from our 900,000-strong membership, and open up a dialogue about the kind of example SNL can set for other television properties — not to mention the broader comedic universe — in committing to modernizing its hiring practices.

Weeks later, as rumors and pictures of midseason auditions began to circulate online, we were thrilled to learn from NBCUniversal executives that the innovative casting process they had undertaken in response to these concerns was successful in identifying not only a fantastic sketch comedy performer in Ms. Zamata, but two excellent comedic writers (LaKendra Tookes and Leslie Jones) as well. These are important first steps that should be applauded.

But rooting for Sasheer also means rooting for a writers’ room that has struggled in the past with the line between satire and stereotype. As I tune in to SNL on Saturday, I’ll be curious to see how the writers’ room adapts and takes advantage of all the new comedic possibilities that this new cast versatility affords — because while the spotlight may be on Sasheer for now, the pressure is still on those backstage to produce sketches that make us laugh, rather than cringe.
