Fashion Research Italy to Open Headquarters in October

Alberto Masotti, the former owner and president of the La Perla innerwear brand, has embarked on a new project. His Fashion Research Italy, a nonprofit organization founded in 2015, will open its headquarters in Bologna on Oct. 21 and will also debut post-graduate courses.
Located at 12 Via del Fonditore, on the outskirts of the Italian city, Fashion Research Italy has renovated a 75,600-square-foot space, which once housed a La Perla manufacturing plant, for a total investment of 15 million euros, creating an educational and exhibition hub dedicated to Made in Italy.
“Manufacture and craftsmanship should embrace new opportunities of development through innovation, research, education, heritage and globalization: fashion needs to evolve into fashion 4.0,” said Masotti, who last June unveiled the “Statue of a Woman” as the symbol of the foundation. The sculpture, which is 32 feet high, is dedicated to Olga Cantelli, Masotti’s late wife and former La Perla designer, and features 21,120 LED lights, its shape recalling both the female body and a gown, thus linking heritage and innovation in fashion.

Aitor Throup and his team deconstructed denim to explore its possibilities for the third experimental G-Star Raw Research collection, which offered designs for men and, for the first time, women as well.
Three distinct sections — raw ecru denim, indigo and brightly dyed fabrics — explored new ways of looking at and rebuilding the casual staple, integrating utilitarian and military influences.
A new jeans style, the Spiraq, was built from a single piece of denim wrapped around the leg, giving an ergonomic shape, and was particularly appealing in a wide-leg, cropped style for women. Jackets and coats featured multiple outsize pockets held on with Velcro, and pants and a skirt built parachute details into their structure.
Throup said he had wanted to look at denim in a new way by pulling the production process apart and avoiding mental shortcuts. “Industrialization leads to standardization,” he said. “By deconstructing it you learn to isolate those elements and bring our new possibilities for denim.”

40 Years of Stanford Research Found That People With This One Quality Are More Likely to Succeed

In the 1960s, a Stanford professor named Walter Mischel began conducting a series of important psychological studies.

During his experiments, Mischel and his team tested hundreds of children — most of them around the ages of 4 and 5 years old — and revealed what is now believed to be one of the most important characteristics for success in health, work and life.

Let’s talk about what happened and, more importantly, how you can use it.

The Marshmallow Experiment

The experiment began by bringing each child into a private room, sitting them down in a chair, and placing a marshmallow on the table in front of them.

At this point, the researcher offered a deal to the child.

The researcher told the child that he was going to leave the room and that if the child did not eat the marshmallow while he was away, then they would be rewarded with a second marshmallow. However, if the child decided to eat the first one before the researcher came back, then they would not get a second marshmallow.

So the choice was simple: one treat right now or two treats later.

The researcher left the room for 15 minutes.

As you can imagine, the footage of the children waiting alone in the room was rather entertaining. Some kids jumped up and ate the first marshmallow as soon as the researcher closed the door. Others wiggled and bounced and scooted in their chairs as they tried to restrain themselves, but eventually gave in to temptation a few minutes later. And finally, a few of the children did manage to wait the entire time.

Published in 1972, this popular study became known as The Marshmallow Experiment, but it wasn’t the treat that made it famous. The interesting part came years later.

The Power of Delayed Gratification

As the years rolled on and the children grew up, the researchers conducted follow up studies and tracked each child’s progress in a number of areas. What they found was surprising.

The children who were willing to delay gratification and waited to receive the second marshmallow ended up having higher SAT scores, lower levels of substance abuse, lower likelihood of obesity, better responses to stress, better social skills as reported by their parents, and generally better scores in a range of other life measures. The researchers followed each child for more than 40 years and over and over again, the group who waited patiently for the second marshmallow succeed in whatever capacity they were measuring. In other words, this series of experiments proved that the ability to delay gratification was critical for success in life.

And if you look around, you’ll see this playing out everywhere…

  • If you delay the gratification of watching television and get your homework done now, then you’ll learn more and get better grades.
  • If you delay the gratification of buying desserts and chips at the store, then you’ll eat healthier when you get home.
  • If you delay the gratification of finishing your workout early and put in a few more reps, then you’ll be stronger.

… and countless other examples.

Success usually comes down to choosing the pain of discipline over the ease of distraction. And that’s exactly what delayed gratification is all about.

This brings us to an interesting question: Did some children naturally have more self-control, and thus were destined for success? Or can you learn to develop this important trait?

What Determines Your Ability to Delay Gratification?

Researchers at the University of Rochester decided to replicate the marshmallow experiment, but with an important twist. (You can read the study here.)

Before offering the child the marshmallow, the researchers split the children into two groups.

The first group was exposed to a series of unreliable experiences. For example, the researcher gave the child a small box of crayons and promised to bring a bigger one, but never did. Then the researcher gave the child a small sticker and promised to bring a better selection of stickers, but never did.

Meanwhile, the second group had very reliable experiences. They were promised better crayons and got them. They were told about the better stickers and then they received them.

You can imagine the impact these experiences had on the marshmallow test. The children in the unreliable group had no reason to trust that the researchers would bring a second marshmallow and thus they didn’t wait very long to eat the first one.

Meanwhile, the children in the second group were training their brains to see delayed gratification as a positive. Every time the researcher made a promise and then delivered on it, the child’s brain registered two things: 1) waiting for gratification is worth it and 2) I have the capability to wait. As a result, the second group waited an average of four times longer than the first group.

In other words, the child’s ability to delay gratification and display self-control was not a predetermined trait, but rather was impacted by the experiences and environment that surrounded them. In fact, the effects of the environment were almost instantaneous. Just a few minutes of reliable or unreliable experiences were enough to push the actions of each child in one direction or another.

What can you and I learn from all of this?

How to Become Better at Delaying Gratification

Before we go further, let’s clear one thing up: for one reason or another, the Marshmallow Experiment has become particularly popular. You’ll find it mentioned in nearly every major media outlet. But these studies are just one piece of data, a small insight into the story of success. Human behavior (and life in general) is a lot more complex than that, so let’s not pretend that one choice a four-year-old makes will determine the rest of his or her life.

But…

The studies above do make one thing clear: if you want to succeed at something, at some point you will need to find the ability to be disciplined and take action instead of becoming distracted and doing what’s easy. Success in nearly every field requires you to ignore doing something easier (delaying gratification) in favor of doing something harder (doing the work and putting in your reps).

But the key takeaway here is that even if you don’t feel like you’re good at delaying gratification now, you can train yourself to become better simply by making a few small improvements. In the case of the children in the study, this meant being exposed to a reliable environment where the researcher promised something and then delivered it.

You and I can do the same thing. We can train our ability to delay gratification, just like we can train our muscles in the gym. And you can do it in the same way as the child and the researcher: by promising something small and then delivering. Over and over again until your brain says, 1. Yes, it’s worth it to wait and 2. Yes, I have the capability to do this.

Here are 4 simple ways to do exactly that:

  1. Start incredibly small. Make your new habit “so easy you can’t say no.” (Hat tip to Leo Babauta.)
  2. Improve one thing, by one percent. Do it again tomorrow.
  3. Use the “Seinfeld Strategy” to maintain consistency.
  4. Find a way to get started in less than two minutes.

Research Confirms That Humble Bragging Doesn’t Work, It’s Just Really Annoying

Before you share the news about your recent job promotion on Facebook, consider this: Researchers have found that a little humble-bragging can backfire. In other words, your false modesty is pretty transparent, and people detest you for it.

The difference between a humble brag and a traditional brag is the way in which a person presents her accomplishment. Two tweets for clarity:

The humble brag attempts to obscure the fact that Ms. Swift has a custom designer dress for a big celebrity event by sharing a “relatable” detail about her unruly cat. The standard brag states, outright, an accomplishment.

The study, which comes from researchers at City University London, Carnegie Mellon University and Bocconi University and was published in Psychological Science, reveals that humble-braggers misread the affects of their self-promotion: They overestimate positive responses and emotions and underestimate negatives ones.

“Most people probably realize that they experience emotions other than pure joy when they are on the receiving end of someone else’s self-promotion. Yet, when we engage in self-promotion ourselves, we tend to overestimate others’ positive reactions and underestimate their negative ones,” says Irene Scopelliti, the study’s lead and a lecturer in marketing at City University London. She says the impact of self-promotion may be exacerbated by social media, where there’s a greater distance between the news-sharer and the recipient.

Self-promoters’ objection may be to make a good impression, but this often backfires. Researchers performed two different experiments to gauge the boaster’s misperception when it came to how his or her message was received. In the first, Scopelliti told The Huffington Post, half of the participants were asked to describe a case in which they had bragged to someone else. They were then told to describe the emotions they felt and the emotions the thought the recipient felt. The other participants were told to describe an instance where someone had bragged to them, how they felt and how they believed the braggart felt. “We coded the emotions indicated and observed that the braggers thought their recipients experienced far more positive emotions, and far less negative emotions, than recipients did,” Scopelliti said.

The second study asked participants to, again, describe a situation where they bragged to someone else or someone else bragged about them. The same results occurred: self-promoters miscalculated the extent to which recipients were happy for them and proud of them, and underestimated the extent to which recipients were annoyed by them. “We attribute this miscalibration to a phenomenon called the ‘empathy gap’: both parties, self-promoters and recipients, have trouble imagining how they would feel if they roles were reversed,” Scopelliti said.

A third, separate experiment was to test emotions connected to online bragging. The researchers gauged reactions to online profiles, some of which were much more self-promotional than others. Their findings revealed that those on the receiving end of a show-off sentence or Facebook status perceive excessive self-promoters as unlikable and as braggarts. Despite the profile creator’s thinking, self-promoting details did not impress readers — their intentions actually backfired. Their self-promotion decreased readers positive perceptions of the person who they were reading about.

“These results are particularly important in the Internet age, when opportunities for self-promotion have proliferated via social networking,” Scopelliti said. “The emotional miscalibration that we observe may indeed be exacerbated by the additional distance between people sharing information and their recipients, which can both reduce the empathy of the self-promoter and decrease the sharing of pleasure by the recipient.”

A team of Harvard researchers recently release a separate paper that underscored the same findings about humble bragging. The researchers ran five different experiments with 302 participants, having them rate the likability and attractiveness of a humble bragger. They found that those who humble bragged were perceived as more irritating and less likable than complainers and traditional braggarts.

At the conclusion of their paper, the researchers print a word of advice for anyone looking to share an achievement: “Faced with the choice to (honestly) brag or (deceptively) humblebrag, would-be self-promoters should choose the former –- and at least reap the rewards of seeming sincere,” they write.

Think before you #humblebrag.

5 Good Reasons To Get Married While You’re Young, According To Research

The average age for Americans getting married has reached a historic high — 27 for women and 29 for men — a jump from the 1990 average marrying age of 23 for women and 26 for men.

While delaying marriage has advantages — a lower divorce rate, higher income for women and fewer and less intense arguments between spouses — studies show there also may be benefits to tying the knot before age 30. (However, there is such a thing as marrying too young. Research shows that marriages beginning when a woman is 18 are twice as likely to end in divorce as those beginning when she is 22.)

Below are five reasons to get married in your 20s.

1. It could make you happier.
According to the National Marriage Project’s 2013 “Knot Yet” report, the highest percentage of people ages 20 to 28 who consider themselves “highly satisfied” with their lives are married, as opposed to single or cohabiting. What’s more, the largest number of women who described their marriage as “very happy” tied the knot when they were 24 to 26. A 2010 study found that “the greatest indicated likelihood of being in an intact marriage of the highest quality is among those who married at ages 22–25.”

2. You’ll make more money (at least if you’re a man).
An analysis of American Community Survey data from 2008 to 2010 revealed that among men in their mid-30s, those who married in their 20s had the highest levels of personal income. Economists have found, in general, that married men earn more than single men — even when you control for other factors like age and education.

3. You’ll have more sex.
Couples who marry in their 20s tend to have more frequent sex than those who marry later. In a 2011 paper, Dana Rotz of Harvard University wrote that “a four year increase in age at marriage is associated with a couple having sex about one time less per month.” What’s more, married people as a whole have more sex than their single counterparts. The sooner you marry, the more time you’ll be spending between the sheets.

4. You’ll drink less alcohol.
A 2012 study published in the Journal of Health and Social Behavior found that married and engaged young adults reported lower frequency of drunkenness than those who are not in a serious romantic relationship. “Marriage and engagement likely carry with them a heightened sense of responsibility and obligation and a less active social calendar, which leads to less drunkenness,” the study’s authors wrote. Laying off alcohol has many health benefits, including weight loss, better sleep, better skin and a reduced risk of some cancers.

5. There’s nothing to be gained from waiting — if you think you’re ready.
We certainly aren’t advocating a rush to the altar, but if you feel like you’re prepared for that next step, go for it. Research says there’s no advantage to delaying marriage just for the sake of delaying it. A 2010 study by sociologists Norval Glenn and Jeremy Uecker states that “A 25-year-old person who meets an excellent marriage prospect would be ill-advised to pass up that opportunity only because he/she feels not yet at the ideal age for marriage. Furthermore, delaying marriage beyond the mid-twenties will lead to the loss during a portion of young adulthood of any emotional and health benefits that a good marriage would bring.”
