Alexander McQueen Resort 2019

A Victorian seaside breeze blew through this collection, which was filled with contrasting elements: hard and soft, chunky and delicate, tailored and fluid. Among Sarah Burton’s inspirations was the British paleontologist Mary Anning, the British shoreline and the era’s obsession for collecting and categorizing bits of nature. There was broderie anglaise everywhere, worked into long white dresses, tunic tops or short ruffle skirts. All that demureness was balanced by leather corset belts, harness tops or thick cashmere sweaters. Other dresses came as sheer lacy knits as delicate as lingerie, with ruffles, bell sleeves or breezy tiers on the skirts. Tailoring had a whiff of Victoriana, too, as in a shell print suit layered over a sheer lacy blouse. A long military coat with a slashed waist had an abstract Union Jack pattern and resembled something that might have washed ashore in a shipwreck.

Roland Mouret Resort 2019

Roland Mouret is eager for his woman to kick back, relax – or run around – with these fluid, draped clothes, which are meant for all-day or all-night wear.
Mouret described these pieces as “a best companion, a best friend” and said he wants his women to exhale into them. The collection was colorful and meant for movement, with sporty touches such as knits and sleeveless jackets with flashes of perforated fabric and a stretchy lining for a silver sequin gown, with a slit up the front. “You can run in it, move around and dance in it. You can live with this dress,” said the designer.
He worked bouclé stretch into a tailored suit and a fitted skirt and offered up a softly-structured, single–breasted trench with a belted waist. Other athletic touches came in the form of a ribbed knit tank dress and a languid jumpsuit with a stretchy waist, and loose tabard knits in bright colors. Things got even more comfortable with pajama–like tops and jackets that were draped at the back, and long tunic dresses with detachable skirts.

Kiton Opening Shop at Wynn Resort in Vegas

Kiton is expanding its retail presence in the U.S. market.
The Italian luxury brand on Friday will open a 1,937-square-foot boutique at the Wynn resort in Las Vegas.
The store will feature a new design that is centered around the brand’s exclusive fabric collection. For example, the chairs and sofas, furniture and curtains are all created from the fabrics also used for clothing. Walnut wood, similar to that used at the Kiton headquarters in Arzano, Italy, and its Palazzo Kiton in Milan, is used as an accent, and special pieces of artwork commissioned for the store will serve to decorate the space.
The store will sell the men’s and women’s apparel collections as well as accessories. It will also offer Kiton’s bespoke service with a special selection of products that are exclusive to the Las Vegas store.
Kiton, which has been in the U.S. market since 1980, has 20 retail stores or in-store shops in this country.

Christopher Kane Resort 2019

The designer took Tokyo’s dark side as his theme for this racy collection of neon sign colors, and textures and silhouettes that nodded to the city’s myriad sex clubs. The rubberized red lace dress and matching coat encapsulated the dark and slightly sinister mood of the collection, which was shot at night by Laurence Ellis.
Lacy lingerie dresses with barely there, rounded skirts had a Goth feel, as did a see-through black dress layered over a bright purple bra. There were some razor-sharp edges, too, in the form of pointed, jutting lapels on a black, rhinestone-edged satin coat and sporty tailored jacket. Softness came in the form of a two-tone hoodie with “More Baby More” written in iridescent letters across the front and a long and billowy white shirt proclaiming that universal truth: “Sh** Happens.”
During a walk-through, Kane said Tokyo has always offered “endless inspiration for me,” adding that his love of subversion is “never at the expense of the clothes. I want to empower women when they put on my work.”

Borgo de Nor Resort 2019

Borgo de Nor has quickly built a name and a dedicated following around its feminine dresses, with their long, flouncy silhouettes, bold colors and intriguing, surrealist prints.
For its latest resort offering the brand has taken a new direction, sprinkling some equally desirable separates to its offer and reworking some of its dresses for the colder months of the year.
Designers Carmen Borgonovo and Joana de Noronha said the aim was to offer more entry-level price points to their customer, as well as a new, see-now-buy-now element, coinciding with the collection’s retail drops in the winter months.
Signature maxi, ruffled silhouettes were reworked with higher necks and longer sleeves, while the prints – which remained bold and vibrant – were set against a darker color palette of deep reds, emerald greens and blues, evoking a new, autumnal mood.
The design duo continued to explore surrealist art to inspire its prints, producing floral patterns with a more lively spirit and a darker edge.
Among the highlights was an “orchid-leopard print” inspired by a self portrait of surrealist painter, dancer and photographer, Rosa Rolanda, who is pictured with an animal-print orchid on her head.
“When I saw this painting it inspired me to take the idea of a

Zuhair Murad Resort 2019

Zuhair Murad embarked on a nautical theme while retaining his signature poetry and femininity, including a range of striking prints used across the collection.
With a stronger daywear focus incorporating a sprinkling of luxe ath-leisure pieces, he included nods to Captain Cook and sailor Corto Maltese, plus their discoveries of plants, Gauguin-esque colors and insects around the Southern Seas.
The most sartorial elements were navy blue or black-and-white outfits, like the sharp-shouldered jackets with tailored trousers and skirts. Shards of compass imagery decorated certain looks — in the form of beadwork and sequins on long black or white evening dresses. A bodysuit could be dressed down or up, and a jumpsuit had a sporty take.
These contrasted well with the fluid dresses with elegant patterns reminiscent of multicolored butterflies or hibiscus. Some standouts included the sweeping V-neck dress with pink, black and yellow embroidery evocative of pixilated butterfly wings and the shorter black-and-white dragonfly-like jacquard knit dress.
Fabrics such as leathers, metal cotton tweed and crepe de chine made appearances, too, adding an even wider reach to this rich collection.

Calvin Klein 205W39NYC Resort 2019

Raf Simons’ playful exploration of Americana continued for resort, which was full of collegiate references, interesting silhouettes such as oversized shoulders and wider arching sleeves, knits, bold Pop and Technicolors, and technical fabrics like Neoprene. It marked the first time a Calvin Klein 205W39NYC resort collection was presented in Paris, shown in the brand’s new headquarters in the city. It’s a vast multifloor space, spanning 15,000 square feet, that was designed by Simons and his longtime collaborator, artist Sterling Ruby. Architectural design was done by Architecture Research Office of New York.
There was a fluidity to the collection, with mostly pieces that can easily be mixed and matched. Take the blue, red and white intarsia knit sweater with the navy marching band pants featuring graphic, colorful piping and cowboy boots; the silhouette pairing a sporty pink tank with a tie-dye accent and a yellow satin skirt with couture airs, or the pink bustier gown worn over a long green turtleneck dress with orange pumps made of basketball material. Men’s wear took a similarly democratic approach.
A vintage sleeping-baglike fabric was morphed into quilted outerwear, while some knitwear was crafted of found yarn. It’s all something old made into something new — on

Andrew Gn Resort 2019

Andrew Gn wants to bring back black and white in an Internet age obsessed with color.
Like many designers, he has felt under pressure to use bright hues to make his outfits pop for online buyers. But what about those chic wardrobe staples like a white shirt and a little black dress? “It’s very tricky these days — anything which is visually uninteresting is not really salable online,” he said.
For his resort collection, Gn found a compromise of sorts: graphic black-and-white patterns inspired by the Vienna Secession art movement. A black dress with three-quarter-length sleeves featured the geometric motifs at the neckline and hem, while a day dress came in a deconstructed houndstooth print.
A checkerboard pattern was a recurring motif that translated into color, namely in a yellow-and-white cape dress embroidered with an oversized gold brooch motif. And there were still plenty of Instagram-friendly designs, including dresses in a charming narcissus print.
Still, Gn hopes the tide will turn back in favor of darkness.
“There’s only so many colors you can wear, and sometimes you feel safe and protected and more relaxed in black,” he mused. “I still think that black is a very essential part of the wardrobe, and I truly believe

Ji Oh Resort 2019

The Salvation Army is where Ji Oh often finds inspiration for her collections. “You see all this stuff that’s cool but not your size,” she said. “I made it my size by playing with folds, gathering, buttons and tape that’s used in athleticwear.” Her resort collection was definitely not secondhand, but a deconstructed take on her signature shirting done in oversize proportions tucked, gathered and fitted into artful, but wearable shapes. As a whole, the collection was a bit disjointed, but there were covetable pieces to pick out. A roomy asymmetric button-down white shirt was cut to fall from the shoulders and gently folded along the buttons. Tailored men’s-inspired trenches had shoulder cutouts with buckle details and were feminized buy a long, lean cut. A painterly polka-dot shirt worn front to back captured a do-it-yourself spirit in a sophisticated way.

Nehera Resort 2019

Nehera took to the mountains for resort, offering a reprieve from the frenzy of modern life with an oxygen-infused lineup of earthy-tinged elegance. A bright yellow pantsuit offered a splash of color, the suit jacket buttoned to one side, the front pocket slightly skewed. The same thick, flowing material was used for a long dress with long sleeves that hung past the wrist.
A feather-light cotton material, with thin, light padding, was used for a laced-up top; paired with short, white, lambskin trousers — a chic rendition of thick, wool mountaineer pants of the distant past. Other nods to the theme included thick-soled leather boots, a contemporary and urban version of the hiking boot, as well as patches with vintage versions of the label’s logo with a stylized Edelweiss flower, applied to a navy blue cotton sweater. Completing the outdoor theme was a handmade wicker-basket purse with leather straps, fisherman-style — pulled straight from the past, no adjustments made and rightly so.

Stella Jean Resort 2019

Flamboyant, colorful and a bit extravagant. The resort season was all about a joyful and happy mood at Stella Jean.
The designer delivered a cute collection featuring a charming balance between masculine and feminine elements.
Mannish suits and workwear-inspired overalls were embellished with unexpected details, such as fringed trimmings and patches of embroidered parrots, while the hyper feminine midi dresses were crafted from mannish striped shirting fabrics.
An energetic Hawaiian tropical pattern developed in different colors was splashed on lightweight robe coats, slightly flared pants and wrap frocks, while a geometric attitude was introduced in the collection via macro gingham cotton used for both logo camp shirts, skirt suits infused with a certain Western feel, as well as chic short jackets matched with flared skirts.
The charming and summery lineup was completed by bijoux developed in collaboration with Italian brand Rosantica and Philippe Model’s cool fringed and beaded sneakers.

Rachel Zoe Resort 2019

In the seven years since founding her namesake advanced contemporary collection, stylist/designer/media mogul Rachel Zoe hasn’t strayed from her original MO of providing career-girl-meets-party-girl clothes to the aspirational Millennial customer.
She’s succeeded at melding her own boho-meets-Old Hollywood style (with numerous homages to her idol Tom Ford), all the while honing the quality/perceived value balance necessary for the contemporary category (taking her line in-house after its initial Global Brands Group licensing model was a good move).
For resort, her favorite season, Zoe upped her fabric game, playing with black feather-printed fil coupe with gold accents for off-the-shoulder maxidresses and tops and a silver and black snow leopard-printed taffeta for evening suits. Metallics took on a new breadth, because “for me, metallic is, like, its own color group,” she said.
Each successive Rachel Zoe collection sees new iterations of the Seventies-inspired pantsuit, and this season’s inspired tuxedo dressing included double-breasted white bridal alternatives, some piped in rhinestones or tonal chiffon, liquid sequined versions, as well as double-layered-lapel black crepe with white piping that looked and felt rich. In addition to her signature “Rachel” flare trousers, Zoe played with wider-leg and cropped tomboy options.

Dondup Resort 2019

For its resort collection, the design team at Dondup drew on the house’s denim expertise to build a lineup of fresh silhouettes with a safari flavor. Jeans were pushed slightly into ath-leisure territory, in a show of confidence from a label that has established authority in the denim department. The wide reach of colors included acid washes and a bright green khaki, which was used to fashion a pair of loose, cropped jeans with one pleat in the middle of each side.
Jungle patterns appeared on cinched dresses and a dressy jacket and shorts combination — also cinched, but with pockets. For shine, the label offered lightweight track suit bottoms, hugged at the waist and ankles by drawstrings. There was a jacket in the same material hung straight to the thighs, sleeves pushed over the elbows — fitting the unique style offered by the upscale and cosmopolitan Italian label.
Anchored with a flagship store in Milan on Via della Spiga, Dondup expanded its web site last year and is gearing up for development abroad.

Unravel Resort 2019

Ben Taverniti channeled the upbeat athletic fashion vibe of the summer issues of Nineties fashion magazines, working total-look outfits in pop monochromatic colors.
The designer used membrane fabrics and drawstrings to add volume, mixing silks, leathers and French terry.
Mirroring the men’s spring 2019 collection were the fusions of streetwear classics on outerwear, including a graphic hybrid black denim jacket spliced with a pale gray anorak, and performance popovers. He also added some dresses, though, catering to demand from retailers, including a pretty blue pleated silk polyester bustier style.
In the mix were cool hybrid knitted hoodies with contrast mesh uppers; distressed white denim with gold piping; voluminous colored cargo pants tricked with drawstrings, and body-con athletic ruched mini-dresses and bodysuits with racer necklines.
Some of the daring palette mixes like hot pink and red recalled Eighties Yves Saint Laurent with a fun couture, disco vibe infusing some of the looks including the red-and-white striped pussy bow blouse paired with high-waist bleached denim with rips and scrunchy colored nylon boots.

Giambattista Valli Resort 2019

“I really believe now, more than ever, in the mix of cultures and being open to other cultures,” said Giambattista Valli who likes the idea of a muse who “You can’t place geographically; they can come from all over the world.”
Taking this nomadic state of mind, with signature florals and the brand’s clear sense of femininity the linking thread, highlights ranged from a day-to-night black sequin pantsuit with pink floral embroidery to a flower-embroidered boucle coat with fringed trims.
The delicate workmanship continued on a charming dress in a mix of Chantilly lace and macrame embroidered with lamé thread. Perfect for a summer tea party was an ivory dress embroidered with Indian “tree of life” symbols mixed with Chantilly lace and prints based on Japanese chrysanthemums.
The designer’s fledgling sports line had also blossomed, with among new pieces beach caftans and a tracksuit in an overlay of point d’esprit lace. More elaborate styles included a track top in a patchwork of Japanese chrysanthemums printed on nylon mixed with graphic bands of Chantilly lace.
Valli said the collection was aimed at women of all generations, from young ladies to Lee Radziwill.

The Ken Scott Brand Makes a Comeback With Resort Capsule

MILAN — Ken Scott’s joyful and creative aesthetic is making a comeback.
The Ken Scott Foundation established in 1989 by the Indiana-born designer, who died in 1991 and became popular in the Sixties and Seventies with his colorful prints, has teamed with Milan-based Daniele Ghiselli Showroom to unveil a women’s resort 2019 capsule collection.
In particular, a design team of young fashion talents went through the designer’s archives in Milan to find the prints, which they used to pepper a range of contemporary designs infused with urban, street influences.
“The Ken Scott Foundation’s archives, which are completely catalogued and digitized, count 6,000 different prints and about one-third of them are unseen,” said Ghiselli, founder and chief executive officer of the namesake showroom. “He is identified and recognized for his floral patterns, but he actually developed so many themes, including sports, boats, bicycles, cars and food, just to cite a few. His prints look so modern and I think this is just the perfect moment, considering the current trends, to bring them back.”

Emilia Wickstead Resort 2019

The designer had Nouvelle Vague cinema in mind and, in particular, the searing, intense colors of the sets on films such as “The Umbrellas of Cherbourg” and of the elegant shapes and drapes of the actors’ costumes. “I wanted the collection to be experimental, cheerful — and exciting,” said Wickstead.
Wickstead is known for her high collars, full skirts and clean lines and they were out in force, but with a retro French Riviera feel. There was a jaunty, tricolor gown cinched at the waist, a fluid red dress with ruching on the sleeves and at the hips and a short aqua one with full, smocked sleeves. A gold lace dress was as glam as it gets, and the only accessories missing from it were a dry martini and a cat-eye flick.
Wickstead put a spiffy spin on some everyday looks, too: White denim pieces had rose-colored stitching while a flower-print dress and matching coat had patterns inspired by the curtains and wallpapers of the Nouvelle Vague era. Both were made from a featherweight raincoat fabric, and suited to women whose summer backdrop is more Côte de Yorkshire than Côte d’Azur.

Victoria Beckham Resort 2019

In her 10th anniversary year, Beckham is aiming to increasingly connect with her customer, listening closely to what she’s asking for, and hoping to cater to her everyday dressing needs. The designer was animated during a walk-through at her new headquarters in west London, talking about how much fun she had with guests during a recent trunk show at Scott’s restaurant on Mount Street. She said the show really got her thinking about “what my customer wants and likes, and about what I can give her.”
The collection was filled with glammed-up everyday silhouettes and the clean lines Beckham loves so much. There was an abstract cowhide print on a long white silk dress, and cream and red versions of the navy, buckle-neck blue dress with the slashed sleeves that Beckham wore to the royal wedding last month. She’s planning a limited run of those — by popular demand from customers — which will land in stores next month.
There were snappy, tailored wool gabardine suits, raw Japanese denim worked into a vest and a fabulous trench, and “a good, well-fitting pair of leather trousers,” which the designer said is not so easy to find these days. There was also a lineup

A.L.C. Resort 2019

Andrea Lieberman is in the midst of celebrating the 10th anniversary of her collection and opening a slew of stores. She felt it was a good moment to take stock. “It felt really natural to look at the codes of the brand and what we set out to do when we first started, and that was to make everything really easy,” she said during a preview of her resort collection. “It’s great for pre-spring to be easy and versatile and great wardrobe pieces that are very real.”
There was no better way to describe the inventory in the lineup. Much of it was pared-down and classic — the perfect khaki trench, the perfect blazer with a bit of a curved hip, the blue button-down shirt with sleeves engineered to bunch just right. There were chic-ed up tracksuits and skinny leather pants, all very down to earth but cut with sophistication, nothing boring. On that note, while Lieberman stayed grounded, she was sure to offer a few bright, party pieces, such as a red wrap coat and a spare orange knit dress with a high slit that was cut as tastefully as a dress that clung to every curve possibly could be.

Merlette RTW Resort 2019

The ability of a fashion brand to grow slowly, without pumping out overtly trendy but continually refreshing silhouettes over the period of a few years while generating sales is an impressive feat in this day and age. Designer Marina Cortbawi’s line of roomy cotton silhouettes for Merlette, offered with thoughtful, smaller details each season, is an example of this type of brand. For resort, Cortbawi infused subtle “non-print” print into her otherwise solid lineup through a calla lily line drawing while adding hand-embroidered details to her ever-evolving line of easygoing, cotton attire. Although her customer stated they didn’t want a print, her artful Ellsworth Kelly, Robert Mapplethorpe and Georgia O’Keeffe-inspired flower was so subtle, even when embroidered on a caftan, that it fit just right.
For instance, her billowy tiered or smocked tops and dresses were given with gold handwoven stitching onto more updated, boxy shapes. Double-V eyelet tops with pintucking, Italian tumbled cotton dresses in navy and coral colored frocks with tie details also made for nice newness to the collection. Although there was a lot of newness, the pieces felt at home with Merlette’s unpretentious, resorty DNA, where fabrics are the forefront of design. For instance, two of Cortbawi’s most

I’m Isola Marras Resort 2019

Country inspiration meets Nineties’ dance references in the young and fun I’m Isola Marras collection.

For resort, creative director Efisio Marras combined more classic fabrics, patterns and silhouettes with neon tones and street influences in a versatile lineup, which perfectly embodies the eclectic nature of contemporary city girls. They can easily pick a romantic maxidress with a cotton eyelet bustier detail for a summer garden party and pack a dégradé multicolor cardigan and HotPants with a matching top on a cow motif for a weekend in Ibiza.

Along with delivering a range of floor-length frocks in several patterns, from rustic checks to spike prints, Marras also crafted an interesting scratched denim for an oversized suit and pants with coated yellow inserts, as well as cotton flee for comfortable and cool pieces, such as baggy shorts worn with a matching coat showing a chic damask panel on the back.

Lafayette 148 Resort 2019

Creative director Emily Smith’s efforts to take Lafayette 148 into more youthful territory hasn’t gone unnoticed. She’s injected the brand with a sense of polished ease, balancing staple shirting with subtle updates against more fashion-driven statements that are still approachable.
She’s long mined inspiration from art, architecture and travel, this season focused on Sonia Delaunay, a Ukrainian-born French artist in the Twenties who also held roles as a costume designer and automobile designer. There was a gloss of Art Deco references with a fresh approach. Smith worked Delaunay’s love of geometric motifs into circular patterns decorating flirty dresses and stripes onto separates.
The big story here was the “third layer” item — lightweight outerwear that topped off looks without the weight. A silk trench in oversize check was both playful and cool, while an embossed leather duster maintained effortless sophistication styled over office essentials. The linear lines of one bluish gray coat were marked with hand-embroidered chains mirroring the contrast stitching of a core black and white group. The ease of the outerwear translated to other categories, too, namely boyfriend shirting and soft-tailored suiting — in particular, a ruby red set was the perfect holiday outfit for a girl who wants chic

Tadashi Shoji Resort 2019

“Don’t be restricted. Keep moving,” read Tadashi Shoji’s notes for their mostly sporty resort collection. Athletic references made for fresh daytime updates to the usually embellished evening brand aesthetic. There were dresses with graphic scuba cutwork, mesh sleeves, perforated knits and shoulder cutouts; two of the best included pleated skirts. A white lace number with a ribbed knit outline that resembled an athletic jacket also made for a fun, younger offering. When it came to logomania — full-length on longer evening gowns and in athletic band details — the brand should have stuck to its show notes and moved right along.

Salvatore Ferragamo Resort 2019

Who are the Salvatore Ferragamo customers? That’s the question the brand is trying to answer as it renovates its image.
For resort, women’s creative director Paul Andrew and men’s design director Guillaume Meilland worked together to define a cohesive and coherent wardrobe able to celebrate the brand’s heritage and at the same time to make the fashion house relevant for contemporary customers.
Rather than tapping too aggressively into current trends, they managed to develop a sophisticated, elegant dress code, which looked fresh and modern yet still sober and discreet.
Workwear served as source of inspiration for a women’s oversized denim trenchcoat punctuated by contrasting stitches, as well as for a flared skirt embellished with grommets and utilitarian pockets. This was paired with a sleeveless caban crafted from a precious double-face cashmere, which was also used for a chic asymmetric slipdress trimmed with blanket-like fringes at the bottom.
The impeccable sartorial attitude of the men’s suits, worked in lightweight constructions, also returned in the women’s range with slightly oversized blazers worn with tapered pants, which were cropped at the ankle to show the new Vara booties.
A sense of ease echoed in a group of cotton and linen pieces in classic safari-inspired colors. This included a men’s shirt

Sonia Rykiel Resort 2019

Julie de Libran is saying it with flowers for the cruise season. The designer’s collection for Sonia Rykiel revolved around a botanical theme, with floral prints lending her Seventies-tinged urban wardrobe a poetic charm.
The lineup played off her signature masculine-feminine contrasts. A pleated mini dress with an all-over lily of the valley print was toughened up with matching platform boots and a black leather donkey jacket, while appliqué leather blooms crept along the collar of a raw canvas sleeveless coat.
Men’s tailoring inspired a series of Glen plaid pieces such as a coat outlined in colorful piping details that recalled founder Sonia Rykiel’s penchant for turning clothes inside out. Outerwear reflected a utilitarian streak, with hybrid items such as a peacoat with red nylon puffer jacket sleeves.
De Libran worked the floral effects into the house’s signature knits, which included a blue openwork sweater embroidered with mimosas made of tiny yellow beads. Knitwear textures ran the gamut from a fluffy tweed-effect T-shirt dress to a preppy camel raincoat — perfect for channeling Ali MacGraw in “Love Story.”

Fran Stringer, women’s design director at the Scottish brand, was in a playful mood this season, channeling sports teams and British youth tribes of the Seventies and Eighties with a host of punchy colors, patterns and preppy details.
Highlights of this energetic collection included a hand-knitted cricket sweater, artisanal tie-dye twinsets in juicy fruit shades and oversize cashmere hoodies — including one in searing hot pink — meant for layering under lightweight summer trenches.
Stringer also worked bright colorblocks and chopped-up argyle patterns into sweaters, all in the name of youthfulness, timelessness and versatility. “I want the collection to transcend the seasons,” she said.

Tanya Taylor RTW Resort 2019

Designer Tanya Taylor is well-known for her use of color and painterly prints, so it is easy to see how her resort collection was inspired by two recent exhibitions, one by David Hockney at MoMA and one by Josef Albers at the Guggenheim. Color and graphic prints are home base for Taylor, but for resort she wanted to zero in on the idea of “key pieces” for her customer.
Taylor’s “key pieces” are anything but basic and come in the form of a deep purple mohair sweater with boatneck collar; a pony skin leopard print sheath dress; a printed long-sleeve pajama-style button-up dress with white piping; soft hammered satin dresses and skirts in saturated green and purple prints, and gray cashmere sweaters with sheer black lace cutout details.
Taylor sees these clothes as seasonless — meant to be mixed and matched, and to her point, she blended in easy flowy blouses and dresses in neutral black and cream prints and a few denim pieces like overalls that felt like a fresh way to cut all the color.
Extended sizing, Taylor noted, was a booming part of her business. The designer introduced it in pre-fall 2017 and it’s been steadily growing since. “We pick

Marissa Webb Resort 2019

Every Marissa Webb collection begins with a man. It’s not surprising as the designer has cultivated a masculine-feminine narrative.
This season began with a deep dive into Google and an image of an effeminate male wearing a bleached jumper in a Seventies ad. (Possibly a date ad, Webb isn’t quite sure.) It inspired the bleached denim pieces in the collection — a couple of great high-waisted shorts with wide-leg openings, and a shirt jacket and jeans with distressing she does herself with a Dremel tool.
She also searched various names and places like Charlotte Rampling, Lauren Hutton, Thailand and Spain, which would explain the casualness in flirty dresses and suiting and the saturated color palette. Where Webb excels is at the intersection of the hard-soft, structured-fluid spectrum. Casual white Ts were dipped in paillettes, hand-painted floral patterns were cut into short suits, and ruching and ruffles were done in atypical crisp canvas to better maintain shape. Other highlights included feminine-inflected tailoring, like boxy blazers with ruffle sleeves, soft-tailored frayed suiting and leather pants with more leg room.
“Everything stands alone,” Webb said at a preview, adding: “Everything has a casual element, even if it feels dressed up, you can pair it with flats.”

Veronica Beard RTW Resort 2019

Casual polish is the endgame at Veronica Beard, where sisters-in-law Veronica Miele Beard and Veronica Swanson Beard update American classics with novelty and, for resort, athletic undertones. They looked to the glamour and sexual femininity of the Eighties and early Nineties, delivering a blend of tailoring this season set against casual sportswear and colorful prints.
Elevated takes on suiting included an off-the-shoulder blazer styled with a multichain belt (which, really, would add considerable edge to any outfit) and a red blazer featuring the designers’ take on the double-breasted silhouette. Leather suiting and twinsets with detachable gold chains leaned heavily toward the Eighties, but were toned down with graphic “Veronica” Ts and track-inspired techno knit pants with great recovery.
There was also novelty. To wit: Bold plaids, scarf prints and engineered florals provided a playful visual element while denim featured crystal buttons. The designers also reworked classics like the trenchcoat into a cropped style with athletic stripes, a reversible version with plaid fabric, and into one of their signature dickeys.
With the anticipated opening of two more brick-and-mortar stores by the end of this year, the designers will need to offer as many dickey options as possible to the new customers they’ll be sure

Fendi Resort 2019

The modern woman’s combination of strength and delicacy served as the main inspiration for this beautiful Fendi resort collection. In keeping with the brand’s latest fall runway show, creative director Karl Lagerfeld continued to define a special wardrobe where sartorial shapes and precise silhouettes were softened by handkerchief embroideries and exquisite, precious details.
Impeccable double-breasted jackets were cinched at the waist with sporty backpack-like closures and matched with cigarette pants showing attached pleated skirts. The latter were also shown in asymmetric kilt-inspired versions, as well in polished midi options, including a linen and silk style featuring the FF logo pattern in a fresh combination of aqua green and white. The look was finished with a matching bomber, an iconic item in a quintessential Fendi wardrobe, which also requires a touch of fur. To wit, the luxurious offering of fur pieces was centered on featherweight styles, spanning from a reversible fox fur vest embellished with a delicate eyelet collar to a shaved mink coat with floral appliqués in sorbet tones.
The hyper-elegant attitude of the ready-to-wear collection echoed in the accessories range. While the metallic cowboy boots introduced and eccentric touch, the bag styles were mainly presented in essential, quite minimal options, such as a Peekaboo X-Lite in

Sachin & Babi Resort 2019

Sachin and Babi Ahluwalia have homed in on what works for their special occasion brand. They succeed in easy, unfettered elegance. It took a while to figure out, but they’ve recently been focused on reissuing classic styles in different fabrics and colors, while slowly broadening their silhouette library as not to alienate existing customers.
Resort was an homage to embroidery both subtle and glam. There were sequins galore, on styles spanning jumpsuits and shortened ballgowns that could be paired with wide-leg pants to less formal options like shirtdresses and tracksuits that transition from day to night. The poplin-sequin-mixed shirtdress was one of the more playfully unconventional items, along with a great silver column style featuring a thigh-high slit that opened to reveal built-in shorts.
Less flashy were sleek, spaghetti-strap column gowns that took days to hand-embellish. A red version, for instance, took three seamstresses across three full days to micro-bead before cutting. Sans embroidery, the style has been a bestseller online, so the designers knew there was demand. The same subtle beadwork could be seen on a yellow minidress, youthful as is and made formal and empowering with dramatic detachable bow.
In general, the collection was age-inclusive, speaking to the brand’s aesthetic goal.

Etro Resort 2019

Veronica Etro opened the doors of a secret garden for resort.
A dreamy, feminine and charming atmosphere was injected into her sophisticated lineup where the discreet elegance of uncomplicated silhouettes was peppered with a kaleidoscopic range of multicolor prints.
Botanical motifs and new versions of the house’s signature paisley patterns, which were updated with intricate floral graphics, gave a joyful attitude to relaxed pants with striped tops, easy-chic frocks with delicate ribbon details, maxidresses injected with a boho mood, as well as fluid Kimono-inspired silk robe coats.
Introducing a more rational, geometric feel, colorblock patterns appeared on a languid one-shoulder tunic paired with wide-leg trousers, while a sweet, whimsical touch was added via a motif mixing stars and a stylized dancing couple — the protagonists of a modern fairy tale.

Fabiana Filippi Resort 2019

Luxurious materials and shimmering effects are balanced by a sense of relaxed sophistication in the Fabiana Filippi resort collection, the first pre-collection introduced by the brand.
Cashmere and shearling, but also soft nylons, are laminated to inject a sparkling feel into the lineup, which this season included a range of outfits fitting the varied needs of contemporary women.
Lightweight double-faced coats are worn with unfussy wrap skirts, while chic pajama-inspired sets and elevated tracksuits are rooted in a practical, urban aesthetic.
A feminine feel is injected into the maxi frocks, crafted from both draped tulle and plissé silk, while an organza jacket combines a see-through look with a tailored cut.

Emilio Pucci Resort 2019

The joyful, flamboyant mood of a tropical summer: For the resort season, Emilio Pucci’s design team embraced a happy, colorful aesthetic that injected an energetic vibe into the brand’s lineup.
A kaleidoscope of new prints, featuring a more graphic look compared to archival motifs, was juxtaposed with eye-catching solids, such as sunflower yellow, hot pink and strawberry red. There was something sensual about the fitted dresses and the mini skirts embellished with embroideries and trimmed with raffia fringes.
Breezy caftans were decorated with prints at the cuffs, while silk inserts gave a luxurious touch to cropped, wide-leg jeans. If a foldable maxi K-way showed the most sporty and practical face of the brand, evening dresses featuring all-over embroideries were designed for jet-setters.

Jil Sander Resort 2019

Purity, elegance, strength and quintessential beauty.
A brand with a strong heritage and a very specific identity, Jil Sander over the last few years has struggled to find its own way to refresh its image for contemporary customers and consequentially return to the relevance of its heyday.
In a fashion scenario dominated by a new maximalism and by untamed street wave, discreet sophistication, rationalism and a less-is-more approach might be considered out of fashion. But, actually, will good taste ever go out of fashion?
No, according to Lucie and Luke Meier, who delivered another convincing collection for the Jil Sander brand. With their quiet, soft-spoken approach, they are actually succeeding in developing a new contemporary language, which speaks of Jil Sander but through codes in sync with the current times.
The designers showcased a realistic wardrobe, filled with urban, highly wearable options, yet peppered with a fascinating twist. Their constant research for an approach projected into the future yet anchored by a personal and sensitive attitude resulted in the delicacy of the mattress-inspired quilted fabrics, the tablecloth-like Vichy patterns and the stretch seersuckers developed in a sorbet palette of light blue and yellow.
The silhouettes spanned from more constructed designs, such as impeccable coats with hourglass lines, to sharp-cut shirtdresses in crisp

Oscar de la Renta Resort 2019

Describing a fashion show as very “mother-of-the-bride” is not always a compliment. Yet it was accurate and deliberate in the case of Fernando Garcia and Laura Kim’s resort collection for Oscar de la Renta. If there was ever a time to go in that direction, this was it.
Garcia and Kim were already looking at a Wedgwood book by Rizzoli as a key reference for the lineup in February when “we got Meghan [Markle’s] phone call to help dress her mom for the royal wedding,” Garcia said after Tuesday’s show, referring to the ODLR ensemble Doria Ragland wore to her daughter’s, the Duchess of Sussex, nuptials last weekend. He noted that the request to dress the most watched mother-of-the-bride in recent memory and the bridal registry china inspiration were a happy coincidence, so the designers went with it.
The English pottery brand’s heritage informed many of the collection’s colors and patterns. Everything in the lineup would be appropriate for an event on a wedding weekend itinerary — the rehearsal dinner, reception, bridesmaids’ dresses, morning after brunch. The show opened with a series of ivory and pastel stretch wool dresses that were minimal in shape with hemlines cut like architectural petals. There were

Zac Posen Resort 2019

A maestro of red-carpet drama, Zac Posen has a practical side, too. He referred to his approach to his resort collection as “the merchandising matrix” during a preview of the collection last week. “You’re going against what’s selling, what you need to expand. We build with all our retailers and customers door by door.” In terms of what’s selling and what’s expanding now: cropped suiting and shirting. He developed the former in a neat black cropped jacket with a white tie neck over a slim black shift dress. The latter came as white cotton blouses with statement cuffs and more fluid satin draped blouses that paired with languid tuxedo/pajama pants. The collection was framed in a strong “direct” palette of black, red, magenta, cobalt blue and pale pink with silhouettes crafted with an Eighties lens, which Posen handled with grace and subtlety. There were no “Dynasty” shoulders, more like gentle draping on killer, curve-hugging silhouettes that Posen knows will sell.

Escada Resort 2019

Niall Sloan’s second collection as global design director ran the gamut of approachable day-to-evening fare. Where his fall debut channeled the eccentricity of Escada’s archive with an Eighties bent, here Sloan incorporated the season’s inspiration with whimsical flare.
He looked to the night sky — perhaps inspired by the clarity of his newfound home (the designer splits his time between London and Munich, where Escada is based) — in ways ranging literal (a billowing cloud print on a sharp-shouldered dress; a recurring star motif), to abstract (the use of Lurex and velvet to reference starlight).
Sloan has been focused on broadening the brand’s definition of cocktail while leveling a casual thread. The strongest pieces managed to balance flash with restraint, like the shimmery metallic gowns that shaped the body loosely, or a billowy dress with shooting star print. In two seasons, he’s demonstrated a playfulness not commonly associated with the boardroom-oriented Escada woman.
His playful hand extended namely into daywear. Shots of pink and green livened separates while a brushstroke floral print created through a collaboration with artist Laura Gulshani, who Sloan found on Instagram, provided a sense of youth. The most festive elements came in the form of beading that served as mismatched buttons

Givenchy Resort 2019

Men’s tailoring has always been the bedrock of Clare Waight Keller’s coed vision for Givenchy. In her debut last fall, she said her focus on sharp shoulders was directly derived from the work of founder Hubert de Givenchy.
For her first resort collection since taking over the creative direction of the label, the designer also delved into a lesser-known part of Givenchy’s heritage: a sportswear line that fed into a selection of looks infused with athletic ease.
“He actually did a sports line at the beginning of the Eighties — Givenchy Sport — and it was kind of interesting, because there, he really used a lot of the graphic designs and these sort of V-shapes,” she explained. “I thought it was interesting to mix that back into the more sophisticated tailoring part.”
Men’s logo track pants, or second-skin tops in technical fabrics, were overt nods to the athleisure trend that has swept through to high-end brands. It translated more subtly in the women’s looks, which included roomy separates in paper-thin glossy leather, done in subtle hues like forest green and Prussian blue.
The Eighties influence was overt with items like cowl-neck tops with batwing sleeves, or a burgundy jersey zip-up jacket with a black

Just Cavalli Resort 2019

Florence served as a major inspiration for the Just Cavalli resort collection, the first designed by creative director Paul Surridge since his arrival at the company last year.
A view of the landscape of the Tuscan city, which is the fashion house’s hometown, as well as the iconic image of the marble statue of David by Michelangelo in Piazza della Signoria, pop up in the young and fun collection.
Rooted in an urban, contemporary mood, the versatile lineup offers a range of easy-to-wear pieces, spanning from multicolored jacquard sweaters, slipdresses layered over lace blouses, as well as a Barbie-like outfit, combining a miniskirt with a denim-inspired jacket, both crafted from baby pink leather.
The brand’s signature wild animal motifs are reworked through a graphic lens and mixed and matched on maxi frocks, while an ironic feel runs trough a lacquered yellow bomber worn with coordinated pants printed in a crocodile pattern.
Staying away from certain rock ’n’ roll and sexy clichés of the brand’s previous collection, Surridge managed to deliver an unfussy and unpretentious lineup of wearable yet eye-catching pieces for the real girls of 2019.

Tomas Maier Resort 2019

No one is immune to influence. That’s why designers have mood boards. Tomas Maier’s brand is anchored in comfortable, everyday sportswear with a fashion attitude. What are the biggest things happening in comfortable, casual sportswear? Puffer jackets, tracksuits, windbreakers, logomania and, of course, the Eighties. Maier had it all in his women’s and men’s resort collection, handling pieces that are widely available elsewhere with his smart, thoughtful hand.
“It’s a little influenced by the early Eighties music scene, early hip-hop,” said Maier during a preview. Track jackets were reversible and pants, cut wide and slouchy, were done in washed flannel and felted wool jersey to give the dressed-down look a polished finish. Oversize cashmere sweaters and fitted knits in sporty graphic compositions were chicly athletic, likewise the down puffers and shearling and nylon jackets. Maier’s signature palm-tree motif was done in an Eighties Los Angeles way, the long, skinny palms printed against pink sunset skies. Adopting his branding to the seasonal theme that way made sense, though the same could not be said for cartoony graphic cassette-tape motifs, which felt too juvenile for Maier’s clientele.
Logos are everywhere, so it was less surprising to see “Maier” stamped boldly on shoes than it

Prada Resort 2019

After a fashion show, a critic typically rushes from the venue back to office, home, hotel, wherever, and writes as carefully considered a review as deadline — usually right now — permits.
Following Miuccia Prada’s cruise show last night, I ignored that deep-rooted conditioning to actually enjoy, rather than fret through, the post-show fete (Tonne Goodman — a delightful dinner companion), and went home to bed after what I thought was quite a strong show. A night’s sleep and some morning rumination told me I was wrong. Prada’s show wasn’t merely strong. It was brilliant.
Not deep-thoughts, esoteric brilliant, but aggressively commercial, resort-long-selling-season-give-me-a-smart-coat-and-pants brilliant. “It’s like a fantasy and the reality,” Prada said, describing her motif du jour. “Of course, [a show is] always a fantasy. It’s my fantasy on what today for me is real.”
A longtime holdout from the cruise extravaganza, Prada acknowledged that market realities ultimately forced her hand. “Everybody is doing more, and so you have to adapt, more or less,” she said.
So after years of sprinkling women’s cruise looks into her June men’s show, last year she staged a full resort show in Milan. This time she opted for another of her brand’s “homes,” its Herzog &

Gwyneth Paltrow Celebrated Her Bachelorette Weekend at this Not-Yet-Open Luxury Resort

Gwyneth Paltrow celebrated her last days as a single lady in style.

Though she was married once before, to Coldplay singer Chris Martin, from whom she consciously uncoupled in 2014, the mom of two still fit in some quality bachelorette time with her closest pals before she ties the knot with fiancé Brad Falchuk.

Prior to the couple’s star-studded engagement party in Los Angeles on Saturday, Paltrow arrived in Cabo, Mexico, on Wednesday and checked into the luxurious Four Seasons Costa Palmas resort. She and a group of girlfriends enjoyed some spa time and hung out outdoors in white robes embroidered with their initials while sipping rosé.

The actress and Goop guru booked a stay despite the property seemingly not yet being open for business. It’s scheduled to open in 2018, according to Forbes, but doesn’t yet offer any reservations on its website. A representative for the Four Seasons did not immediately reply to PEOPLE’s request for comment.

Despite this, Paltrow has already visited the exclusive hotel at least once before what she describes on Instagram as her “#henweekend.” GP and then-boyfriend Falchuk toured the property back in 2017, according to the Hollywood Reporter. Busy Philipps and Colin Hanks among others were also invited to get a VIP sneak peek of the 1,000-acre property on the Sea of Cortez.

Costa Palmas is located on the east coast of the Baja Peninsula, apart from most of the vacation destination’s hotels. In addition to the 145-room Four Seasons hotel, the planned resort community also includes private residences, a marina capable of docking super-yachts and an 18-hole golf course, according to Forbes.

The setting features 2 miles of picturesque white-sand beaches — a rarity in the area — as well as organic orchards and farms. There’s also a second luxury hotel next door, Amanvari, part of the international Aman chain, a celeb favorite.

In January, Paltrow and Falchuk announced their engagement on the cover of Goop Magazine’Sex & Love issue after dating for over three years.

Italian Resort Meets SoCal Casual With Splendid, Margherita Missoni Capsule

Margherita Missoni came full circle when she partnered with Splendid on an upcoming exclusive capsule collection.
The designer and oldest daughter of Angela Missoni, along with the Los Angeles contemporary firm next month put forth a collection that blends Splendid’s Southern California casual aesthetic with Missoni’s Italian heritage and vacation wardrobe.
“Splendid approached me about a collaboration and it touched a nostalgic cord to me because the first item I ever purchased when I went to L.A. when I was a teenager was a Splendid T-shirt and so I was really happy to work on it,” Missoni said.
At the time, heavier-weight, more rigid T-shirts were all the rage, while Splendid offered something different: lighter, more supple fabric T-shirts. Missoni was hooked.
“The quality appealed to me at the time. It was a softness and this is one of the biggest qualities of Splendid,” she said. “I bought quite a few and I’ve worn quite a few during those years. I had them in every color.”
A trio of themes form the basis of the Margherita x Splendid collection: daisy and denim; red, white and the ocean; and stripes and solids across T-shirts, caftans, skirts, dresses sweatshirt-and-short sets, swimwear, bodysuits and jeans.

PEOPLE Explains: Texas Mom Murdered Husband and 2 Sons Before Killing Herself at Luxury Resort

On Monday morning, an unthinkable crime occurred in Galveston, Texas.

According to police, a 37-year-old mother fatally shot her husband and their two sons before killing herself. The violence transpired inside a room at the San Luis Hotel on Galveston Island — an upscale spa and resort on the sandy beaches of the Gulf of Mexico.

The tragedy remains under investigation, as many unanswered questions remain. Here are five things you need to know about the case.

1. The Family Checked Into the Resort Hours Before the Killings

The suspected killer, Flor De Maria Pineda Canas, along with her 39-year-old husband, Mauricio Canas, and their two boys, 10-year-old Mauricio Jr. and 5-year-old David, had checked into the San Luis Hotel mere hours before other guests called 911 after hearing a quick succession of gunshots, according to a statement from the Galveston Police Department.

Responding officers arrived and were directed to the eighth floor. They found the room’s door dead-bolted, and could could hear “faint moaning coming from inside the suspected room and began to make entry,” the statement explains.

• Want to keep up with the latest crime coverage? Click here to get breaking crime news, ongoing trial coverage and details of intriguing unsolved cases in the True Crime Newsletter.

After breaching the room, police found the husband and two boys “lying in bed, all with gunshot wounds.” Investigators believe they were killed as they slept, and that moments later, Flor took her own life. Police found a handgun next to her lifeless body.

2. The Killer Was Religious, May Have Suffered From Depression

Those who knew her claim that Flor Canas was earnestly religious and had been a member of Iglesia Cristo Viene in their hometown of Baytown, Texas, for more than seven years. The family, ABC 13 reports, attended mass together the Sunday morning before their deaths.

Most of the members are in shock because this is a person that was always looking for ways to help the community,” Leonila Olivares, an ordained minister, told ABC 13. “She had a servant heart.”

Talk amongst the congregation, Olivares explained, is that Flor was not suffering from emotional distress. “They’re thinking that it was because of her depression,” she said.

3. One Boy in Kindergarten, the Other in 5th Grade

According to reports, the two boys were both students at the Victoria Walker Elementary School in Baytown, a suburb of Houston. Mauricio Jr. was in the fifth grade, and David was in kindergarten.

A spokeswoman for the school, Beth Dombrowa, issued a statement to the Houston Chronicle on Monday.

“The tragic circumstances surrounding these students’ deaths are almost too much to bear,” it reads. “A student death can have a ripple effect on a school community and, because of this and out of concern for the students’ classmates and the campus faculty, we will have additional counseling services at the school. We are grieving for the loss of young life and its infinite possibilities and we pray for the family, friends and students most affected by this tragedy.”

4. Motive For The Killings Still Unclear

Detectives still do not know what drove Canas to kill her family at around 4:30 a.m., but they’re positive she was the killer.

“Forensic data collected at the scene indicates that the female is believed to be the shooter at this time, and is believed to have killed her two children and her husband before apparently taking her own life with a 9mm handgun found adjacent to her body,” the statement from Galveston Police explains.

• For more compelling true crime coverage, follow our Crime magazine on Flipboard.

Canas and one of her children “were unresponsive but still appeared to be alive” when officers arrived. All four were transported to a nearby hospital where they were pronounced dead.

5. Murder-Suicide Was Second Fatal Shooting Incident at Resort in Recent Months

Back in April, a security guard working at the San Luis Hotel was shot to death.

Phillip Molis, 23, was in the resort’s rear parking lot on April 9 when he noticed three suspicious men. According to ABC 13, Molis approached the men, who opened fire, hitting him several times.

Molis underwent complicated surgeries, but died a week later from his wounds, the station reports. Brandon Ledford, 19, has been charged with his murder and was detained in October.

Ledford has not entered a plea to the charge against him, and remains in police custody without bail. Information about whether he has retained an attorney was not immediately available.

Inspired by English country gardens, Alexander McQueen’s resort outing was brimming with romance: Flowers were printed and embroidered on delicate chiffon mididresses, while knitwear and corseted gowns were designed to evoke caging. Juxtaposing the softer elements were slim suits done in a handwoven tweed, structured monochromatic blazers thrown over dresses and oversized trenchcoats. Embellishment was another key element. Devereux to Launch Swimwear for Resort

Devereux is plunging into the swimwear space.
The brand will expand its resort collection to include swimwear for the first time and will introduce a 15-piece collection to retailers at the trade shows this month. It will be offered to consumers in November.
Designer Robert Brunner focused the collection around two styles: the Amalfi swim trunk and the Bond board short. The Amalfi offers an elastic waistband, side pockets, a full lining and is made from a quick-dry fabric. The Bond board short has a snap button front, side pockets and also utilizes quick-dry fabric.
“I was determined to make a proper swimwear collection that was about fit, performance and quality. I spent the last couple of years developing swimwear in Portugal because I want to give our customer the craftsmanship and quality of a fine European garment,” Brunner said.

The swimsuits will retail between $ 115 and $ 135.

Martin Grant Resort 2018

Martin Grant has come up with a solution for keeping armpits dry during a heat wave: air-conditioned sleeves.
Puff sleeves, leg-of-mutton arms and dropped armholes were just some of the hot-weather hacks the designer deployed in his resort collection, which featured breezy drawstring-collared blouses and cool djellaba styles that worked equally well for the beach and the city.
“I like the fact of mixing these ethnic influences with something that’s very clean and structured,” he said.
Grant worked with patterns including irregular stripes, dots and a coral-inspired print, the latter appearing on a belted black-and-white tunic dress. French workwear fabrics inspired a selection of outfits in light blue cotton poplin, including a wide-leg jumpsuit and a peasant blouse with puffed-up sleeves.
Eveningwear skewed toward Eighties styles, with items like cocktail dresses in mismatched polka dot patterns with major sleeve action. Grant also worked that voluminous shoulder into an emerald-green silk top that delivered climate control with a theatrical flourish.

Lanvin Resort 2018

In her final collection for Lanvin before her departure after just 16 months at the house, Bouchra Jarrar stuck to a mostly monochrome palette for outfits that alternated between trapeze dresses and her signature masculine-inspired suits.
Decorative touches included floral fabrics, lace trims and ruffled necklines. Jarrar added touches of color including the label’s signature blue, which was used on a powdery blouse with frills at the neck and wrists, unexpectedly paired with high-waisted pleated pants in a similar shade.

Balmain Resort 2018

Olivier Rousteing is having a “Vive la France” moment, evidenced in his resort collection and recent men’s wear show. Blame it on his collaboration with the Paris Opera, or soon-to-be-launched line of lipsticks with L’Oréal Paris. Or the fact that “politically,” with President Macron in the driving seat, he’s “more proud than ever about the choices that France is making.”
The designer fed an array of French symbols — think tweed and Breton stripes “like you’d find on a Serge Gainsbourg T-shirt” — through the Balmain filter. “This to me is Balmain: It’s fierce, it’s tough, but at the same time there’s a softness and fragility that I’m working on now,” said the designer of a white and pastel body-con macramé dress with black patent leather accents. It was inspired by French tapestries. A range of body-con-meets-ballet numbers ending in tutus were among variations on the theme, paired with gold-buttoned tweed jackets trailing with fringed silk. “They’re my Balmain ballerinas,” Rousteing said.
With an L.A. store due to open on July 20, the designer also folded in nods to his second home, the U.S., with Western references sprinkled across the collection, from fringed jackets to horse prints. From ballet to Beverly Hills, the

John Galliano Resort 2018

“I think leopard print can go quite bourgeois or rock ‘n’ roll, and I definitely pushed for the latter direction,” said Bill Gaytten of the John Galliano collection’s signature print, based on a hybrid beast that was part leopard, part tiger. It added a wild note to asymmetric cocktail dresses. More unexpected spins included a fierce embroidered cat adorning an innocent-looking lemon silk pleated dress with a signature draped bow detail at the waist.
Other elements included denim embroidered with lotus flowers, studded dresses, an animal print trench, and a great checked jacket cut on the Galliano bias with a contrast animal print collar.
The designer also sprinkled in a range of signature pretty options, including Galliano dancing dresses with tulle overlays and vintage-looking embroidered slips.

Maticevski Resort 2018

For his debut Paris presentation, rising Australian designer Toni Maticevski stuck to his signature sculptural silhouettes, mashing contrasting textures like sports mesh, tailoring and ornate brocades.
The moods meandered, too, from dark sexy creations showing a bit of skin to long double-breasted jackets in rose brocade and souffle tulle gowns, albeit with abstract constructions that tempered the princess tone.
Slogans nodded to titles of previous collections, like The Elegant Rebel or Tomboy Heiress, with the designer also incorporating a print inspired by old movie titles from the Thirties and Forties that lent a shadowy, melancholic note.

Highlights from the Pink label included bikers and reversible bombers lined with a splashy reinterpretation of a print from Japan’s Taishō Democracy period in the Twenties, which also played out on floaty dresses.
Among additions to the showroom was a full women’s capsule from the Exclusive line, part of the brand’s Black sub-line, focused on signature, mannish, plain suiting options with twists like dusty check prints and oversize spins on the shirtdress with bow ties.
Adding a dose of color was the scrunchy tie-and-dye stains splashed on T-shirts, shirts and Bermudas in polyester and crepe de chine. Summery options included twisted tanks and a white linen jacket with pleats at the back, while the brand’s Rismat casual subline also continues to gather momentum. Hits there included the super-relaxed, ample, hybrid cardigans and sweaters with tonal shirting sections in a range of lovely shades going from electric blue to dusty yellow.

Ingie Paris Resort 2018

Ingie Chalhoub took resort quite literally, offering up a languid collection inspired by the California lifestyle of the Seventies. Palazzo pants, jumpsuits and flowing dresses featured paisley or swirling vintage-style prints in a variety of pastel hues on white backgrounds, with floral adornments and hand-sewn braided details to knock home the hippie-chic message. Others were worked in plain candy-colored silk that flowed on the body, or in more structured jersey with a Neoprene texture.
These were contrasted with glittering fabrics that glammed things up. A graphic sequined guipure worked well on a long maxiskirt in off-white or a black shirt with translucent organza sleeves, while an ivory boyfriend blazer with sequin details had a relaxed charm. On a striped rough-hewn fabric, meanwhile, the contrast of metallic threads and pastels made for a refreshing look.

Drome Resort 2018

“Resort and pre-fall are strong selling seasons for Drome, so I always try to focus on seasonless pieces,” said creative director Marianna Rosati. “Since these seasons deliver to stores so early, I want the customer to be able to buy something and potentially wear it right away.” Let’s not forget Drome is a leather-based brand, making the goal of producing seasonless clothing all the more challenging.
Rosati approached warm weather by airing out leathers with perforations, punctuating loose silhouettes and dresses and, at times, weaving leather strips to create breathable little tops. She treats leather like any other malleable fabric, using lightweight and paper thin skins to create dresses with bunched sleeves and twisted knots, culottes, shirting and pants with the appearance of acid wash denim. It’s easy to overlook how difficult translating leather into an approachable, everyday fabric can be given how well she does it.
The designer continued the vein of her fall collection, expanding her textile library to include silks, viscose and knits — oftentimes breaking up leathers with lighter-weight fabrics for a sense of motion. “I push myself to work with the material in new, innovative ways that are interesting yet still wearable. This season, I wanted to

Max Mara Resort 2018

As traditional resort inspirations go, it doesn’t get much more quintessential than the Cote d’Azur — a classic, upscale vacation mood befitting a classic, upscale brand such as Max Mara. The design team was wise to stay within the framework of luxurious classics for which the house is known, channeling casual but elegant Riviera chic with a modern touch into a practical wardrobe. Eileen Gray’s famous E-1027 villa in Roquebrune-Cap-Martin was a key reference.
Done mostly in navy, white and camel, easy tailored looks were laced with subtle nautical details — for example, a crisp denim button-down shirt and pencil skirt with a rope belt; a mannish white trench with sailor buttons down the side over wide-leg white pants, and of course the house’s signature camel coats, here cut into loose, lightweight robes. There was a languid masculinity to many of the separates, countered by the sporty, minimalist femininity of a navy slipdress with nautical criss-cross spaghetti straps, a sailor-inspired white shirtdress with black tipping and a few touches of pale pink in a sweater and robe coat.

Zuhair Murad Resort 2018

The collection had a stronger daywear bent without losing any of the poetry and femininity, with Zuhair Murad carefully dosing his fairytale theme. He expressed a sweet side and a dark side, ranging from a powder blue princess gown in embroidery depicting a castle in the clouds to a draped black printed dress and a black suit with a peplum jacket dusted with stars that had a Forties Surrealism flavor.
Standouts included a mannish suit with stitched lines evoking pinstripes that were then dotted with studs, and the white lace and ruffled looks with a dreamy David Hamilton vibe. Not forgetting the more romantic dresses embroidered with pretty prints mixing birds of paradise, blooms, nymphs and unicorns that allowed for a bit of escapism.

Fleur du Mal Resort 2018

Jennifer Zuccarini presented a quintessential resort collection with a lingerie twist. For her newest offering, Zuccarini presented both Fleur du Mal’s holiday and resort collections. For holiday, inspiration stemmed from Japanese photographer and artist Nobuyoshi Araki, whose work includes a mix of sensual florals with bondage. This provocative feel could be seen throughout the holiday collection — a great red, floral button-up paired with a tougher, patent leather skirt — and translated into holiday — a chic white corseted set of shorts and matching strapless top.
While resort included lingerie details, the selection was much brighter and channeled resort to a T through both ready-to-wear separates and great swim offerings. There were great highlighter colors that were balanced out with indigos and navies as well as a pretty palm print, as per a one-shoulder dress with U-shaped high leg slit. Highlights in swim included new high leg, high-waist brightly colored bikinis as well as velvet swimwear. In ready-to-wear, the strongest pieces included “matchy-matchy” sets — like a pink silk twill “denim” pant and tank as well as a black burnout silk bustier tank-and-pant set. The collection was sexy but cool, and perfect to wear from the beach to a party.

Aquilano.Rimondi Resort 2018

Graphic and bold was the mood that Tommaso Aquilano and Roberto Rimondi wanted to infuse in their resort collection.
The paintings of Joan Mirò served as inspiration for the geometric patterns and the bright colors of a range of skirts and shirtdresses, including a fluid silk style cinched at the waist with a coordinating belt. Sporty references emerged in sleek pants featuring printed multicolor bands running down the legs, while hyper-feminine skirts, paired with the brand’s signature white shirts, featured ultra-high waists and ruffled details.
Aquilano and Rimondi also injected a sleek sartorial appeal into the vests and blazers coming in both striped and checked motifs.

St. John Resort 2018

St. John is staying true to its knitwear heritage for resort, but as Greg Myler says, they’ve “taken the seriousness out.” Inspired by Cy Twombly’s 1986 work “Scent of Madness,” Myler’s collection incorporates a palette of blush, coral, hibiscus and raspberry tones punctuated by taupe and silver hues.
The brand is overall “less suit-y,” says Myler, who did include an update on the iconic jacket, which now comes in a featherweight fabric. There’s an intentional move to integrate cashmere more often, as well as tactile and luxury fabrics like velvet and shearling. A key piece for resort was a long, cashmere blanket coat which was paired with stretch suede leggings. Velvet appeared in the form of a floral jumpsuit, as well as gray velvet trousers, which were paired with a cashmere hoodie and a vest to emphasize the theme of comfort.
Evening offerings included tea dresses, a coral update on the high-low trend and a black, lingerie-inspired gown that comes with a cape for an added touch of drama. Swarovski crystals are incorporated throughout the collection. After all, the St. John customer “loves a little bit of sparkle.”

Badgley Mischka Resort 2018

Mark Badgley and James Mischka have had the pleasure of dressing Anjelica Huston many times. “She did our anniversary campaign a few years ago and we’re so inspired by her,” Badgley said. They based many of the resort gowns on Huston’s taste of a sleek column or sculptural silhouette with one great detail, which made for a lineup of striking dresses. A black “butter” crepe dress with a deep V and graphic belt was killer. Another gown had a gently fluted white skirt and beaded black top. There were a lot of black and white gowns as well as beaded cocktail minis and some chic separates, but they broke out the color — cobalt blue, magenta, a garden jacquard — on dresses with statement necklines, such as sculpted ruffles or strong portrait cuts. The collection made you want to dress up.

Victoria Victoria Beckham Resort 2018

Remember when Victoria Beckham launched Victoria Victoria Beckham — then known as Victoria by Victoria Beckham — as a light, flirty lineup of girly dresses to accompany her main line? That was a while ago — 2012 to be exact — and the collection has come a long way. There were a few dresses for resort, such as a gold-sequined T-shirt style and a mixed stripe knit tank, but otherwise, the dominant mood was cool separates worn a little loose and boyish, that reflect Beckham’s own evolution toward sophisticated modernist sportswear.
“When we merged VVB and Denim two years ago I was responding to a customer desire to develop the category beyond a dress offer,” Beckham said. “In the past two years, the collection has continued to expand into more lifestyle categories. And we’ve established pieces such as cotton shirting, outwear, knitwear, easy dress shapes, embroidered sweatshirts, all pieces that are now synonymous with VVB season on season.”
There was a mild Seventies vibe to disco sequins and graphic gold, orange and blue zig-zag stripes printed on a fluid oversized shirt worn with bold blue slouchy pants. “Thinking about the time at which this collection drops, which is just before Christmas, I was keen to

Peter Jensen Resort 2018

For resort, Jensen harked back to the Sixties and early Seventies and took cues from actress Sandy Dennis’ sophisticated style.
Jensen, who admired the charisma of the “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?” star, focused on pared-back silhouettes and worked relaxed shapes into his fun range filled with ladylike pieces with a twist.
The designer said for him, resort is a time when he listens to his customers and considers fabrics, shapes and styles and said his woman is clever lady who is a very secure female that combines her career with fun.
“Commercial is not a bad thing,” said Jensen. “What I find important with the resort collection is that you listen to your customers. We want people to wear it. With resort it can give you a bit more. With the mainline, you can play around and make it more image-building.”
Jensen continued to focus on his brand’s bestsellers such as dresses and shirting this season.
There were classic A-line structured shift dresses done in an embroidered floral fabric laid over an organza. He played with details and placed a twisted bow on pockets.

Rebecca Taylor Resort 2018

Rebecca Taylor took both a pragmatic and fanciful approach to resort. The former, as the designer explained, due to timing. “For us, it’s more about the holiday aspect because when we are talking about seasonality and when we ship, when retail is really selling this — it does not align with what a classic resort package would be — people are not buying resort-y stuff in November,” she said.
The latter refers more to the creative approach Taylor took. “I got really inspired by Victoriana — watching the series ‘Victoria’ on Netflix, all the voluminous sleeves and cinched waists just feel so right now,” she explained.
The result was a superfeminine holiday lineup filled with frilly dresses and flirtatious silhouettes. Sleeves took on the most hype, done in puffy proportions on pretty floral prints or crispy white cottons. Elsewhere, a micro polka-dot print in flowy chiffon showed up on a stretchy, gathered bodice jumpsuit and dress version. Taylor is known for her girly jackets, so this season she offered a great leather floral-print one with dropped shoulders and a fitted waist, as well as a versatile black tuxedo with ruffled shoulder details. “I am loving things that feel fitted in the waist; I

Brock Collection Resort 2018

To all the hopelessly romantic women who daydream of dressing like a Renaissance maiden in a period piece yet know how that would look (ridiculous), there’s hope for you in Brock Collection. Laura Vassar and Kristopher Brock have found a way to bring the fairy tale ethos into modern-day without resorting to costume drama. Their antique floral-driven resort collection was a great example of this.
“We wanted the concept of floral on floral without being overwhelmed by a bunch of different florals,” said Brock, noting that they used a similar floral motif in different colors, scales and bases throughout the collection, which also pushed corset dressing in a versatile, unrestrictive way. Pretty and elegant, the whole lineup had a rustic, faded dreaminess to it, as Vassar and Brock worked in tulle, silk, taffeta and soft burlap.
A burlap off-the-shoulder corset top was layered over a tea-stained tulle floral print turtleneck and matching long pleated skirt. A sturdier tea-length silk dress with a corset bodice was trimmed in sculptural ruffles, one or two of them lined with horsehair to accentuate the female form. A lightweight sundresses with smocking details was sweet and naive. Two burlap corset dresses — one ivory, one flax-colored —

MM6 Maison Margiela Resort 2018

MM6 Maison Margiela’s catchphrases for resort included “industrial, not artcraft” and “similar items, new contexts.” Hmmm. Let’s just say the lineup offered sleek interpretations and twists on both archival and new ideas. The design team emphasized flat silhouettes; pieces that looked terrific in both 2-D and 3-D. For instance, a red, sleeveless knit with zippers up both sides took shape as either a dress or a top while two dresses — one in black and the other in red — revealed a rectangular, tacked-on cape when worn.
Velcro was employed extensively. Socks could be added or detached from Velcro-sole sandals, while a top and dress could be wrapped and fastened in endless ways thanks to the adhesive. Also customizable, in three steps: a pant, top and shoes. The first step comes at purchase: rigid, white cotton pants, kept stiff from a vegetable glue bind. Step two: wash the pants. As this happens, the fabric becomes bleached through and separates, giving the pants a much softer texture. Step three: the canvas can be cut away to reveal great, dark wash jeans with deconstructed details.
While there was less denim than prior seasons, a great pair of jeans with handkerchief hems stood out. Bestsellers

It was easy to get on board with Victor Glemaud’s goals for his delightful resort lineup of unisex knitwear. He wanted to make it “joyful and charming,” he said. “In this climate we’re in, I want it to be fun.” Mission accomplished with a trompe l’oeil white sweater/black slip tunic dress, a multicolored striped cashmere cardigan and a thick boxy knit top with a dash of Agnes Martin-inspired pastel pink graphics. To show some skin, there were short flirty skirts, crop tops and pieces with decorative slashes. Glemaud also introduced a range of sweatshirts and T-shirts in a Joan Miró-inspired splatter print. “I want it to be seasonless and price accessible,” he said. Because that’s more fun for everyone.

Trina Turk Resort 2018

“We tried something new this year,” explained Trina Turk of her resort 2018 collection, “we split the collection into two mini capsules.” Turk’s reasoning behind the decision was simple: addressing her customers’ needs. “There’s multiple things going on at that time of year and we wanted to address the different needs of our customer. There’s an earlier mini capsule that is dressier, more party-oriented. You could wear it to a holiday party or New Year’s Eve…[for the second] it was more “wear now” and you could wear it into spring.”
For holiday offerings, Trina and Mr. Turk offered color-matching separates. For women’s: a standout monochromatic hot-pink off-the-shoulder top with matching trouser; and for men’s: a vibrant reworked ribbon-printed suit. Both were perfect for the couple who don’t mind going unnoticed at a party. A black crepe dress made for the perfect transitional piece between the two capsules.
The second mini capsule revolves around an exotic blooms print, which is specifically placed on separates, like a cotton poplin blouse and gray sweatshirt dress with ruffle details. The offerings were “a bit more casual, and maybe a little bit more cozy.”

No. 21 RTW Resort 2018

For resort, Alessandro Dell’Acqua indulged freely in what he likes most — the ingenuous subtle sensuality that has marked his aesthetic over the decades.
Unlike his former luxury namesake line, No. 21 is rooted in a solid contemporary vibe, filled with urban and sporty references. For resort, the designer also integrated a lingerie feel, exalted by the use of his signature nude tone.
Epitomizing the spirit of the collection, see-through slipdresses peeped out from the edge of knitted polo dresses, and plissé poplin frocks were embellished with detachable lace sleeves, while a transparent lace tunic revealed a retro-inspired lingerie set.
The delicate floral motif rendered on a range of feminine pieces contrasted with the more masculine appeal of checkered styles infused with a sartorial feel. The word “chérie” printed on T-shirts and tank tops introduced a hint of pop, while feathers and sequins enhanced the glam appeal of the collection.

Acne Studios Resort 2018

For anyone wondering whatever happened to Veruschka, the 78-year-old model still gives great face — and astounding derrière — as witnessed by her appearance in the look book for Acne’s resort collection.
“This is a collection of Acne Studios archetypes, iconic and real, so I wanted to work with an icon for the shoot,” said Acne creative director Jonny Johansson.
“We asked Veruschka to choose her favorites from the collection, and it was amazing to have this supersonic woman work with such spontaneity,” he added.
Rather than work top-to-toe archetypal looks, as Vetements did last season, Johansson went for a pick-and-mix approach, throwing in items including a boxy cropped denim jacket with exaggerated sleeves, an asymmetrically buttoned plaid blazer and an embroidered Cuban shirt.
He added a quirky touch with bodysuits and leggings featuring a wood print, and off-kilter accessories such as elbow-length suede gloves and Moroccan-style pointy slippers. Message: powerful personalities only need apply.

Narciso Rodriguez Resort 2018

From a reviewing perspective, saying the clothes speak for themselves is a pretty big cop-out. But all the adjectives one can conjure for Narciso Rodriguez’s resort collection — subtle, pure, modest, sensual — sound too generic to do it justice. Basically, it was a perfect pre-collection, a tight lineup — nothing extra — that cast Rodriguez’s minimalist vision in a soft light. His main inflection points came from couture references, such as the cinched waist on a black dress with a gently voluminous asymmetric skirt; a black stretch knit sweater with a chalky minimalist pouf of a bias-cut skirt; a lightweight crinkled wool shell with impeccable seaming details over a matching skirt. Loosely draped, pristinely tailored, or anatomically seamed and cut out, the fits were excellent. Breezy textures and the use of blush as an accent color infused the look with calm femininity. It was a collection of clothes made to be worn, no discussion necessary.

Kobi Halperin sees resort as a time for novelty, coupled of course with his brand of ornate embellishment. On a trip to Berlin a few years ago, the designer viewed an exhibition on Kunstkammer, or, Cabinets of Wonder and Wonder-rooms. They featured a curation of beautiful objects and relics that at times had little to do with one another, a parallel Halperin associates with today’s social media obsession, where every pretty thing ends up in one feed. His inspiration was thus born: Bringing together a rich assortment of seemingly disparate details — dry flowers, ostrich feathers, pearl trimming, patched embroidery, etc. — in a collection that bridged high and low.
The tether to the Cabinets of Wonder was brought to life in bright yellow wallpaper-influenced floral prints found on his signature free-flowing blouses. The print showed up elsewhere on a detachable neck piece featuring insect and floral embroidery that could be worn as a stand-alone accessory over leisurely tops or with any of his flowy plissé gowns. He introduced more color, as in a pink gown with gold embroidery, and focused on adding dimension to soft and feminine silhouettes — ruched silk sleeves on blouses, rhinestones on satin tops, ostrich feather trim

Bibhu Mohapatra Resort 2018

“We almost had a female president. Almost,” Bibhu Mohapatra began during a walk-through in his studio. “This collection is paying attention to the female youth of this era to inspire them to be the best in their own fields, be leaders and [be] inspiring to others.”
For a designer whose career has been steeped in designing eveningwear, how does this message translate over to a younger generation? To start, Mohapatra isn’t designing for the trend-obsessed; his clients look to him for longevity. So his message was subtle, found physically in the form of a honeycomb embroidery that decorated ballgown skirts and a playful organza blouse with rounded shoulders and drawstring ties; the same geometric shape was found on mosaic tiles adorning skirts and full-length dresses. They were both a metaphor for community — as bees work together to build a honeycomb — and being able to accomplish goals by working with others.
Elsewhere, the designer hoped to inspire confidence and courage through more youthful silhouettes and strong tailoring. A sexy black-and-white cutout dress with Japanese lace was clearly targeted at the body confident, as was a bright red top fashioned with dropped shoulders in a Japanese crepe. But the most youthful pieces

Tory Burch Resort 2018

As much as Tory Burch is the main muse and inspiration for her brand, she likes to share the referential love with other impressive women. For resort, she homed in on the friendship between two accomplished style icons from very different backgrounds: Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis and Princess Elizabeth of Toro. While the former probably needs no introduction, for those less familiar with the latter, she was a Ugandan princess who became the first female Uganda lawyer, one of the first three African women to be admitted to Cambridge University and the first to be admitted to the English Bar Association, the first African woman to have been given a spread in Vogue, the first woman to have served as Uganda’s minister of foreign affairs and the first to be its ambassador to the U.S..
“She’s stunning,” said Burch during a preview of the collection. Jackie and Elizabeth’s friendship began in the Sixties, so Burch drew on the signature silhouettes of the era as well as each woman’s personal style, mingling the classically American with the exotic. Not coincidentally, that mix is quintessentially on brand. There were soft space-dyed knits and A-line leather skirts with hardware details; fully embroidered maxi caftans; a

Cinq à Sept Resort 2018

An impromptu trip to Rome set the tone for Jane Siskin’s Cinq à Sept resort collection, which the designer admits was completely “on a whim.” “We were sprinting off from Paris, we were going to go to Milan and thought to go to Rome and, it’s funny, we had kind of been feeling those iconic bombshells of the Sixties and Seventies — the Sophia Lorens — it all converged and came together,” Siskin explained.
As a result, looks read very feminine. For starters, an “apricot” matte jersey dress with a tied top (which was attached but made to look as a separate piece) had a very dolce vita feel to it — as did all the printed tiered dresses in floral prints. “We love a twirly dress, our costumer loves the movement,” Siskin said. Embellishments were also present in suits and in short cocktail dresses. But there were also a lot of elevated sportswear for everyday pieces that have come to be expected in a Cinq à Sept collection: Floral embroidered military jackets, printed floral shrunken Ts, denim stirrups — even a windbreaker with feather trims.

Roberto Cavalli Resort 2018

Nature has always been a major source of inspiration for Roberto Cavalli. This season, the brand’s in-house design team took an imaginative trip under the sea and then straight into the Amazon rainforest.
The pulse of submarine nature was rendered in the prints and embroideries of coral reefs, anemones and seabed vegetation giving a fresh, breezy feel to fluid dresses, knitted frocks with details carved to reproduce sea weaves, as well as a chambray short tunic.
But Cavalli also went beyond the sea. In order to offer a wider daywear offering than previous seasons, the brand introduced a safari theme, which informed the range of jackets with applied pockets matched with slouchy crepe de chine cargo pants with crushed leather inserts.
Then it was off to the rainforest, with Amazonian fauna and flora inspired vibrant prints, including a bright butterfly pattern and a snakeskin motif, coming in pastel tones, rendered on a silk lamé shimmering fabric crafted for a draped minidress.
The evening range spanned from more graphic designs, including a maxi style with cutouts and jewelry decorations, to a hyper luxury number with multicolored sequined embroideries.

Alice McCall Resort 2018

Australia-based Alice McCall softened things up for resort, showing a girlier side of her usually more edgy lineup. “There’s that whole Marie Antoinette mood going on with Parisian pastels — apricot, shell, ocean blue, rose — and that phrase neo-rococo, which we keep saying to each other in the atelier,” the designer explained on her show notes. “But then there’s the Alice McCall twist.”
Fluid ruffled dresses in printed tulle, brocade separates and feathered jackets definitely gave the collection its newly found luxe vibe, but there were also more than enough laid-back bohemian off the shoulder tops, embroidered playsuits and easy wrap dresses to balance things out.

Tomas Maier Resort 2018

After a quiet season or two, Tomas Maier rebooted his collection with a younger, tougher attitude, with some of the key elements derived from the Italian Futurism movement of the early 20th century. “It’s casual but designed,” said Maier, noting that many of the bomber jackets, trim skirts and poplin blouses had adjustable, transformative details, packing a lot of potential looks into one item. For example, a canvas bomber could be unzipped in the back to be worn off the shoulder; a skirt could be zipped to be worn tighter; poplin shirts had adjustable voluminous sleeves, and pants could be snapped off into shorts.
If it sounds tricked out, it wasn’t — Maier anchored the silhouettes in sporty classics done in dark colors with pops of graphic patterns, such as spikey camouflage, colorful stripes on knit dresses and lots of his signature palm tree print. More simple, and slyly sexy, were thickly knitted, long body-con dresses with cutouts on the sides. Furry clogs, palm tree printed bags and shoes and Maier’s jewelry, which is always a strong point in the collection, here done in bright enamel, added color, texture and a sense of playfulness to the lineup.
For men, Maier injected utility

Veda Resort 2018

Several practical ideas guided Lyndsey Butler’s resort collection. First, as in her fall collection, she decided to bring Veda back to its leather jacket roots, so leather pieces — bikers, bombers, shearlings — formed the core of the lineup. Secondly, “we realized resort is a winter collection for us,” said Butler, who fleshed out the leather and shearling with chunky alpaca knits and some mannish tailoring. Lastly, she considers every new collection a reaction to the previous season. Fall was a “back to basics” statement, so Butler wanted resort to be “fun.” Almost all the knits — body-skimming dresses and pants — had Lurex sparkle. The leather jackets weren’t classics, but came in fun colors, such as burgundy and lilac, done in a metallic foil treatment or tie-dyed. A shiny black shearling had purple fur. The color and shine gave a glam rock vibe to the collection’s night-out downtown attitude.

Christina Economou Resort 2018

Christina Economou’s resort collection was about complimentary counterpoints and a lot of pleats. She worked with a print designer to create a trompe l’oeil pleat print made up of earthy shades of gray, blush, stone and khaki on fluid silk pieces. Then she took the colors of the print and pulled them out into structured solids — white cotton shirts with interesting sleeve details; a green zip-front cotton dress with a short stiff pleated skirt; a sky blue shirtdress with pleated cuffs and utility patch pockets. The detailing gave a good novelty nudge to classic shirts and shirtdresses. The structure was new for Economou, who also worked with softer stuff such as silvery metallic pleated shirts, dresses and fluid pants.

Protagonist Resort 2018

Georgia Lazzaro’s resort collection had something for every season: a poplin chambray slipdress and powder blue silk moire jacket and shift for high summer; chunky merino sweaters in bright cobalt blue and kelly green for fall and winter; shimmery Lurex knits for holiday. And many pieces in the lineup could work year-round, including the range of poplin shirts, indigo denim and satin slips and skirts.
At the risk of defaulting to cliché, Protagonist is known for its elevated classics, but Lazzaro is doing a nice job evolving beyond that, injecting traditional tastefulness with the right amount of subtle fashion edge. One of the poplin shirts styles had a high ruffled collar. There were stirrup pants and new slipdress styles with longer, asymmetrical skirts, while a gingham checked group added offbeat graphic flavor.

Dsquared2 Resort 2018

A chic safari? Or a Boy Scouts reunion? Whether their customer decides to take a trip to Africa or to opt for hiking, Dsquared2 designers Dean and Dan Caten have a resort wardrobe ready for any occasion.
The Catens designed a versatile collection, where many elements converged. There were wild animal patterns, including the zebra motif of a feminine jacquard dress trimmed with leather. They were juxtaposed in the lineup to the series of Boy Scouts-inspired cotton staples, such as a cape with utilitarian pockets and a crewneck sweater, all embellished with colorful patches — a tribute to the outdoors tradition of the designers’ native Canada.
To raise the level of metropolitan glamour, the Caten twins introduced a Fifties’ rock ’n’ roll theme which translated into Capri denim pants worn with cropped jackets and mini coats crafted from rich jacquard or a leather patchwork. They were embellished with maxi buttons, as well as studs.
The leather beret cape, which topped most of the looks, was designed for cool urban bikers.

Fendi Resort 2018

Fendi prefers ongoing narratives to short stories and long relationships rather than fleeting love affairs. This approach is demonstrated not only in the 52-year collaboration between the house and its creative director Karl Lagerfeld, but also in the label’s design approach.
Instead of constantly seeking for new, extravagant seasonal themes, lineup after lineup, Fendi prefers to build a solid fil rouge through its collections.
Lagerfeld picked up the sartorial mood of his fall collection and brought it back for resort in a charming new version. The men’s tailoring seen in the house’s fall runway show was refreshed and elaborated here through a flamboyant, pop attitude. A magnified chevron pattern was splashed on a feminine fluid silk dress softened by a plissé detail and maxi checks appeared on a printed wool coat with coordinated pants. These pieces were all worked in bold fuchsia tones – ‘wow’ effect guaranteed.
Neon touches also peppered the most feminine part of the collection, with orange flowers embroidered on the cream and blue botanical jacquard crafted into a flounce skirt and a bomber, revealing the graphic Fendi Roma logo on the ribbed knitted cuff.
For those looking for fur, the house displayed its unique skills by delivering myriad options, spanning from

Valentino Resort 2018

While his competition travels the globe for ever-more exotic pre-fall and cruise locations, Pierpaolo Piccioli is taking a different tack entirely. He has identified New York as Valentino’s second home away from home, after Paris, where the Rome-based house has long shown its couture and primary ready-to-wear collections.
For Piccioli, New York epitomizes cultural diversity at its most expansive and genuine, a concept he wants to capture, particularly in his pre-collections. Yet the collection Piccioli showed on Tuesday morning proved more than a sartorial civics class. It was a compelling ode to casual urbanity — chic, smart and glamorous in the most unfettered sense. As such, it offered a powerful statement of Piccioli’s intention to build the daywear side of the Valentino repertoire in a manner more pragmatic than that which meshes so seamlessly with the lyrical gowns he presents in March and October.
Yes, this collection has some pan-cultural currents, mostly in embroideries and knits that looked non-specifically tribal. But Piccioli’s primary point was to tackle head-on that which has become one of luxury’s greatest challenges: its customers’ increasingly casual lifestyles. He did so in a powerful street-sport-Valentino fusion. No easy trick, especially given the baseline of his work for the house:

Bottega Veneta Resort 2018

Considerations about the weather and different consumer behavior were top of mind for Bottega Veneta creative director Tomas Maier in designing the brand’s cruise collection. “It’s totally changed now. Women like to see clothes in season — when it’s cold they want a coat — and they shop in a different way compared with the past. You see it on daily store results,” said Maier during a walk-through in Milan. “They have different priorities and time is luxury number one for everyone.”
As the months progress, from the early deliveries of the cruise season in October until the later ones in December, so does the weight and colors of clothes change from, say, a ribbed turtleneck sweater in lilac worn with a suede skirt suit in a contrasting rusty color, to lighter tech duchesse skirts or a studded poplin dress with a full circle skirt fit for the festive season, for parties and “going away,” Maier opined. “The darker and shorter the days, women want something uplifting, colorful and appealing, if nature can’t give it to them.”
To wit, Maier opted for unusual combinations and variations of colors and “a bit of eccentricity,” he said, but also monochromatic designs, as in a

Just Cavalli Resort 2018

For resort, the Just Cavalli creative team portrayed young women living a rock ‘n’ roll romance. The house’s signature codes — baroque details, wild animal patterns, floral motifs — were all incorporated in an eye-catching wardrobe that definitely targeted girls who want to have fun. There were some day options, such as a two-tone cape evoking marine-like atmospheres, as well as sweatshirts with embroideries and micro studs. But frisky, evening attire was at the core of the lineup. Skin-tight vinyl pants were matched with a silk bomber, chiffon minidresses were trimmed with lace and featured lace-up details, while micro metallic embellishments punctuated the leather jackets. A military appeal emerged in the rounded buttons decorating high-waist denim pants and a white brocade suit featuring short pants. Once again, the brand’s creative team managed to deliver a coherent collection rooted in the Just Cavalli heritage yet appealing for the new generation of party lovers.

Flagpole Resort 2018

Flagpole’s resort 2018 collection made a case that signature swimsuits in an updated colorway, paired with stunning visuals, make for a fresh collection. From designers Jaime Barker and Megan Balch, the line features figure-flattering swimwear with pristine tailoring. For their new collection, the seasoned designers created an array of swimwear and beach ready-to-wear in a fall-inspired palette of muted and soft maroons and blues. Shot at La Muralla Roja in Alicante, Spain, the location perfectly embodied the spirit and palette of the collection. The new hues were introduced to their signature color-blocked design on both classic and new styles. Standout shapes include a backless one-piece, underwire one-piece and a cropped rash-guard with inside shelf bra. The girls also brought back the front tie style and applied it to a strapless one-piece. Rtw that successfully translates from beach to street includes chic maroon, side-slit palazzo pants; quick-dry trouser boardshorts, and an array of cover-up-esque skirts and knit tops.

Etro Resort 2018

In keeping with its signature folk-chic attitude, Etro celebrated the flamboyant, vibrant aesthetic of the African continent for resort.
Images of monkeys, leopards and luscious flowers, as well as tribal graphic patterns, mixed and matched with the brand’s signature paisley, were juxtaposed in a joyful patchwork explosion. Veronica Etro balanced the abundance of patterns, all rendered through the most exquisite artisanal techniques, with the chic, linear silhouettes of fluid silk cabans, roomy pants, as well as foulard-inspired feminine dresses. While she avoided taking the inspiration too literally, the designer trimmed the necklines of frocks and coats with sweet crochet details recalling African beaded decorations. These were also echoed in the embellishments of a Lurex and chiffon maxidress featuring a jacquard motif reminiscent of the graphics of the Art Nouveau movement. Infused with a highly sophisticated appeal, this collection offered a rich, new take on Etro’s iconic hyper-decorative attitude.

Dior RTW Resort 2018

For Maria Grazia Chiuri’s first cruise collection for Dior, the house created no less than a “Wizard of Oz” moment. Toto, we’re not in Los Angeles anymore.
Technically the show wasn’t in L.A. — it was in Calabasas, the tony suburb in the Valley with famous residents such as the Kardashians. But when guests arrived at the actual venue, shuttled by a military grade supply of SUVs up a dirt mountain road in the Upper Las Virgenes Canyon Open Space Preserve, and then by a smaller fleet of Gators, they might have thought they were on safari in the desert hills. The only thing “Hollywood” about the location in the Santa Monica Mountains was that it resembled a big budget movie set, strewn with retro trailers and modernist tents pitched around piles of pillows, benches and woven carpets. Waiters kept the Moet flowing. Two hot air balloons floating in the background bore the words Dior Sauvage, and as did a sign erected on a hilltop yonder in a nod to the iconic Hollywood sign.

Moschino to Show Men’s Spring, Women’s Resort Collections in Los Angeles

MILAN – Moschino said on Wednesday that it will present its spring 2018 men’s collection in Los Angeles. During the runway show, which will take place on June 8 at Hollywood’s Milk Studios, Moschino creative director Jeremy Scott will also unveil the brand’s women’s resort 2018 collection.
Exclaimed Scott, about his decision to return to show in California: “As Los Angeles is where I live, to quote Dorothy: ‘There is no place like home!’”
Last June, the brand had already combined its men’s spring collection with the women’s resort range in a runway show as part of the Made LA lineup, which included a variety of runways shows, parties and events held at downtown Los Angeles’ L.A. Live event space.
Moschino men’s fall 2017 collection, along with the women’s pre-fall 2017 line, was unveiled at a show in Milan last January.
In April, Moschino and Scott hosted an event at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in collaboration with mobile game Candy Crush and streaming video platform Tidal, which live-streamed musical performances from the party, including appearances from Lil Uzi Vert and Lil Yachty.
The party was inspired by the Moschino Candy Crush collaboration on a capsule collection of summer festival items including a limited-edition backpack, for $ 650; an iPhone case,

Cruise Control: Chanel to Remain in Paris for Resort Show

FRENCH LESSONS: He’ll always have Paris — even during cruise season. Karl Lagerfeld is to parade his next cruise collection for Chanel in the French capital, reaffirming his attachment to the city and its importance for fashion, WWD has learned.
Chanel confirmed May 3 as the date of the show, but has yet to disclose the venue or other details.
Lagerfeld and Chanel recently privatized the Ritz Paris and staged three shows for the Métiers d’Art collection, a pre-fall range of ready-to-wear embellished by the specialty couture ateliers that Chanel owns. He dubbed it “Paris Cosmopolite” to evoke a time when elegant women from the world over converged on the mythic Place Vendôme hotel, established in 1898.
The Rue Cambon house has been a pioneer in staging itinerant shows and has taken its cruise collection as far afield as Seoul and Havana and its Métiers d’Art collection to Dallas, Edinburgh and Salzburg. Lagerfeld typically uses each destination to exalt a facet of the house’s lore — or to invent a new chapter.
But Paris remains a key font of inspiration for Lagerfeld, whose Métiers d’Art effort for Chanel in December 2015 was themed “Paris in Rome.” Staged at Cinecittà film studio No. 5, it boasted a

Paco Rabanne Resort 2017

Nineties youth was the starting point for Paco Rabanne resort, nodding specifically to Mathieu Kassovitz’s cult French movie “La Haine,” based on disillusioned kids living in the Paris suburbs. Not that the mood of the line — with its signature combination of sporty, sharp lines and a bright, sci-fi-scented palette hooked on graphic mixes of red, silver and white — was downbeat.
Cue black, blue and silver jumpsuits cut from technical cotton, nylon and satin; graphic minis with supersized drawstring hoodies gathering at the front to form a soft collar effect, and uniform-inspired looks pairing vinyl tops and apron skirts with oversized pleats and strap accents, say.
Merch-friendly nods to the house’s Space Age roots included techy silver anoraks and minis in snakeskin-print metal mesh or laser-cut jersey. Second-skin black jersey knits sported patches embroidered with the logo of a head with a rainbow brain — a badge, perhaps, for this urban, cool-kid tribe?
In this fresh, sporty lineup, Julien Dossena also continued to push his athletic innerwear theme via bra tops in bathing suit-like black technical jersey joined by silver rings and leggings with thick elastic Paco Rabanne-emblazoned underwear bands — another wink to the bygone decade.

Basta Surf Teams With Photographer Gray Malin on Resort Collection

SURF’S UP: Basta Surf will soon tout wearable art for an upcoming resort collection.
The swimwear company is set to deliver in November a collection in collaboration with photographer Gray Malin, known for his images of dreamy beach scenes. The collection fuses prints used from Malin’s photographs onto Basta Surf swimwear.
Malin and Basta Surf founders Emily Ford and Samantha August pored over Malin’s image collection and ultimately narrowed it down to prints that were blown up to create patterns for the collection. One was shot in Australia overlooking the beach on New Year’s Day and captured a giant wave rolling through. The other print was shot in Lisbon and captures beachgoers, picking up the bright colors from the clothing and umbrellas dotting the landscape.

Resort 2016 Trend: Lightweight Suits

Suits once implied a lean, ladylike skirt and a crisp jacket — that now-vintage look of the Ladies Who Lunch. But the concept has evolved considerably to include walking shorts or legginglike pants and culottes matched with blazers, cropped jackets and even vests. For the resort season, anything goes. Adding to the freshness: plenty of surface interest courtesy of lightweight pinstripes, seersucker and blurred plaids.

10 of the Prettiest Dresses From Oscar de la Renta Resort 2016

Oscar de la Renta presented its resort 2016 collection yesterday and—spoiler alert—it was filled with breathtaking dresses and gowns, all done in jewel-box brights. When Peter Copping presented his first collection for the label in February, it was received as a very good sign of things to come for the house, under new design direction since de la Renta passed away in the fall. This latest roundup proves that the label’s signature sophistication and joie de vivre, beautifully maintained by Copping, is still being embraced and celebrated.

10 Must-See Pictures From Louis Vuitton’s Resort Show in Palm Springs

louis-vuitton-resort-2016-show-palm-springs-bob-hope-house

The desert outside of Los Angeles got a whole lot chicer last night when Louis Vuitton descended on the legendary Bob Hope estate in Palm Springs to show its resort 2016 collection. The evening was rife with major fashion moments that happened on the runway, plus celebrity spottings and a carnival-themed after-party.

louis-vuitton-resort-2016-palm-springs-leather-jacket
Tough met soft in a powerful way thanks to cut-at-the-waist leather jackets styled with flowing maxiskirts.

louis-vuitton-resort-2016-sneakers-sequin-chains
The style world’s collective obsession with sneakers doesn’t appear to be going anywhere—which, awesome! Another thing about this look? The print is crafted all of sequins.

louis-vuitton-resort-2016-mini-leather-shorts
Itsy-bitsy shorts, seen here in leather, made models’ legs look a mile long.

louis-vuitton-resort-2016-peasant-prairie-dress
The folksy feel that permeated the location popped up on the runway too, in ground-sweeping, high-neck gowns that felt like a high-fashion Little House on the Prairie moment.

louis-vuitton-resort-2016-croc-print-dress
It’s worth putting money on the fact that this beauty will be coming to a red carpet sometime soon. A figure-hugging silhouette and a raised croc print begging to be touched are too good not to be shown off.

There were branded bumper cars at the afterparty.

And classic arcade games, including a claw machine that offered up prizes way (WAY) better than anything in the history of arcades.

The most amazing celebrity sighting involved Miranda Kerr and Selena Gomez. We’ll credit this cozy snap to the power of fashion.
