Julia Louis-Dreyfus Finds Hidden Message About Seinfeld in Old Frame from 1993: ‘Fun, Right?’

A picture may be worth a thousand words, but even Julia Louis-Dreyfus‘ photo frames have a few things to say.

The Veep star, 57, was going through some of her late father’s belongings when she came across a little surprise from some Seinfeld fans.

“Today I’ve been going thru family photos from my dear dad RIP, organizing them, taking them out of frames etc,” she captioned a  Twitter photo of her unexpected discovery on Monday. “Look what I found in the back of a frame-a message from the framers in Mt Kisco, NY from 1993. Fun, right?”

They had scrawled the note, ” ‘Elaine’ Rules!!! We Julia.” Louis-Dreyfus, of course, starred as Elaine Benes on the hit NBC sitcom.

The actress’ father, billionaire business mogul William Louis-Dreyfus, passed away in September 2016, just two days before the Emmy Awards where his daughter took home her fifth consecutive Emmy.

“Lastly, I’d like to dedicate this to my father, William Louis-Dreyfus, who passed away on Friday,” she said in her acceptance speech at the time. “I’m so glad that he liked Veep because his opinion was the one that really mattered.”

https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

Earlier this month, Louis-Dreyfus watched the 2018 Screen Actors Guild Awards from home as she continues her battle with breast cancer. The actress was honored and celebrated for her work on Veep with the award for outstanding performance by a female actor in a comedy series.

Minutes later, she addressed her win in a tweet.

“I wish I could have been @SAGawards tonight but have to admit it’s pretty fun to watch in my pj’s,” she joked on Twitter.

“So honored to win. So proud to be a union member,” the star continued. “So happy for my @VeepHBO bozos for winning ensemble award. Miss being at the table with you all. How was the chicken?”

The honor marked Louis-Dreyfus’ eighth SAG award, out of a total of 21 nominations. She previously won the honor last year for Veep, and again in 2012. Her other wins were for her role on Seinfeld — both as solo star and as a member of the show’s ensemble.

RELATED VIDEO: Tony Hale Says Veep Costar Julia Louis-Dreyfus Is Doing ‘Fantastic’ Amid Cancer Battle

Timothy Simons, who costars as Jonah Ryan on Veep, revealed that although the cast hadn’t been able to call Louis-Dreyfus right after her win — “the cell service in this thing is actually pretty terrible” at the SAGs — the actress has been “incredibly strong” throughout her cancer battle.

“She’s generally been in good spirits when we’ve seen her,” he said. “She has a good sense of humor, which I think it does wonders when you’re going through something like this. She’s incredibly strong. She’s uniquely able to combat something like this. She’s incredible.”

Bridget Foley’s Diary: Ronan’s Right (Again): Thank You, David Remnick

Ronan Farrow is grateful to David Remnick. He shouldn’t be alone. All who believe that traditional journalism must continue in its role as society’s guardian, holding the powerful accountable, should share Farrow’s gratitude to The New Yorker editor in chief.
This is not to downplay Farrow’s remarkable fortitude, guts and journalistic audacity in sticking to, and finding an outlet for, his brilliantly reported, real-life Harvey Weinstein horror story after it was passed on by NBC. (On Tuesday, Farrow got at least one write-in vote at the polls, for Manhattan district attorney, from yours truly, galled at the notion of Cyrus Vance Jr.’s unopposed candidacy. In his initial piece, Farrow reported that Vance could have charged Weinstein and didn’t, to the chagrin of some NYPD types.)
That Farrow jumped into the story and refused to let it die testifies to his belief in his profession and his own mettle. “To not run this story would be a dereliction of my ethical duties,” he told CNN in one of his many television appearances since his original story broke. That, in a series of tweets on Tuesday, he addressed the reality — that he couldn’t have done it alone — speaks to his professional character.

Oldest Male Orangutan in North America – Who Loved Bob Barker and The Price Is Right – Dies at 45

Toledo is mourning the loss of one of its longest and most beloved residents: J.J. the orangutan.

The 45-year-old ape, who lived at the Toledo Zoo in Ohio, died over the weekend from heart failure. According to the zoo, J.J. – whose full name was Jiggs Junior – was the oldest male orangutan in North America.

The zoo announced the news on Facebook, Tuesday, calling J.J. a “beloved member,” noting that “millions of visitors enjoyed his gentle disposition, remarkable intelligence and endearing interactions.”

J.J.’s long-time zookeeper, Suzanne Husband, shared that the orangutan loved visiting with toddlers and was a little bit of a TV addict.

“One of his favorite enrichment items was watching TV,” she said. “He loved football and would make a nest in front of the TV on weekends and look like every other guy, kicked back watching the games.”

RELATED VIDEO: Orangutan Can’t Stop Laughing After Seeing This Magic Trick

Other than sports coverage, J.J.’s favorite series was game show The Price Is Right.

“He would come in from exhibit every day at and wait for us to turn on the TV,” said Husband. “He would even be a little annoyed if we were late!”

She noted that after Drew Carey took over hosting duties a few years ago, J.J.’s interest in the series waned – revealing that his affection was really for former star Bob Barker.

“Later in his life, we were able to stream his TV through the Internet and pull up old shows and his interest in the game show came back,” said Husband.

The zoo called J.J. an “incredible ambassador for his species,” noting, “He will be dearly missed.”

NYC Dogs In Bags Are What You Need In Your Life Right Now

That tweet of an amalgam of dogs-in-bags surfaced on Tuesday, resurrecting the excitement of seeing a dog on the move in NYC for all of Twitter. So, we did you all a favor and rounded up some of our favorite subway dog snaps!

This Tweet Scarily Sums Up Life As A Journalist Right Now

Being a journalist in today’s political climate is like being a zookeeper at a zoo where all the animals you’re responsible for are perpetually running amok.

There hasn’t been a day where the top news hasn’t been something huge and related to the White House. The result for those responsible in disseminating that news is, well, exhaustion.

In fact, Twitter did a damn good job in summing it up best:

Preach.

The irony of this is that if it were 2005, Tiger Woods getting a DUI would’ve been the scandal. Instead, we have Trump chaos, collusion with Russia, and surely more madness to come.

Le sigh. The year isn’t even halfway over yet.

‘Price Is Right’ Contestant Breaks Plinko Record, Loses His Mind In The Process

It’s not every day you can lead a chant of your own name.

In fact, don’t do that. That should never happen. The one exception is if your name is Ryan and you’re breaking the Plinko record.

On Thursday’s episode of “The Price is Right,” contestant Ryan Belz got the chance to play Plinko, and the guy made the most of it. The contestant’s chips landed in the $ 10,000 slot three times, and he ended up with a total of $ 31,500.

For those who don’t know “Price is Right” history off the top of your head, host Drew Carey said that’s a new Plinko record.

And Belz lost his mind the whole time.

If you weren’t aware, Belz is somewhat of a “Price is Right” fan. You know, somewhat …

In a video on TMZ, the contestant said he’s such a fanatic of the show that he scheduled his classes at Penn State around “Price is Right” so he could watch. Belz even has an impression of the “Price is Right” announcer George Gray.

He said he’s not allowed to appear on the show for another 10 years now, but added, “10 years, mark my word, you know where I’ll be.”

Major ISPs now say they won't sell your browsing history. Yeah. Right.

Major ISPs now say they won't sell your browsing history. Yeah. Right.Internet service providers are in an awkward spot. After getting all dressed up for the sell-your-data dance, it turns out they'll be staying home.  Or so they claim.
Reuters reports that representatives from Comcast, Verizon, and AT&T all came out today to assure worried consumers that the companies will not in fact sell customers' browsing histories to the highest bidder.  "We do not sell our broadband customers’ individual web browsing history," writes Comcast Chief Privacy Officer Gerard Lewis on the company's blog . "We did not do it before the FCC’s rules were adopted, and we have no plans to do so."   But should we trust Lewis and his counterparts at AT&T and Verizon? SEE ALSO: The software that could prevent ISPs from selling your browsing history could also just make things worse The denials were issued after the House and Senate voted to repeal landmark consumer privacy rules passed in 2016 that would have blocked internet service providers from selling the browsing history of their customers.  The public backlash has been strong — people are even donating to GoFundMes seeking to buy the browsing histories of members of Congress (although the success of those efforts is very much in doubt as no one is currently selling a "Congress's Browsing History" package deal) — and major ISPs are rushing to tell everyone that
hey hey hey, we're the good guys here. And yet.  The Electronic Frontier Foundation's Kate Tummarello points out the obvious incongruity of ISPs denying that they plan to take advantage of the new privacy landscape when those same companies lobbied so hard to bring it about.  "Those rules were a huge victory for consumers," Tummarello wrote on the EFF blog of the to-be-repealed rules. "Of course, the ISPs that stand to make money off of violating your privacy have been lobbying Congress to repeal those rules. Unfortunately, their anti-consumer push has been working." What's more, it's not like internet service providers haven't creeped hard on customers before. They most certainly have.  "Consumers have every reason to be skeptical about what the ISPs say," the EFF's Karen Gullo wrote to
Mashable, "because, as we have pointed out, they have already tried many of the practices — including hijacking your searches — that they are now allowed to do thanks to the party-line vote in Congress." Spokespersons for Comcast, Verizon, and AT&T can proclaim their devotion to your privacy all they want, but if the past is any indication you'd be right to remain skeptical. 7 Famous Instagram Rabbits You Need to Follow Right Now, That Aren’t the Easter Bunny

It’s the bunny’s biggest moment of the year. While the tooth fairy has a 365-day-a-year gig, the powers of rabbits are limited to just one morning: Easter Sunday.

On this day, like Santa, the Easter bunny manages to traverse the world with enough jelly beans and chocolate goodies for millions of people. Chimp Hurls Feces At Zoo’s Crowd, Nails Grandma Right In The Face

Talk about a crappy trip to the zoo.

A grandma got nailed in the face with a piece of poo by a dirty-handed chimpanzee in a YouTube video that’s gone absolutely ape on the web.

Guests were watching a boisterous chimp hooting and hollering at the bottom of an enclosure at the John Ball Zoo in Grand Rapids, Michigan, on Sunday when without warning the chimp made an underhanded throw towards the crowd.

The act fired up screams and laughter among the people. As the camera turned to look at the object of the commotion, one woman summed it up perfectly: “It got Grandma!”

There, sitting in the front row, grandma turned to reveal a chunk of feces stuck to her nose. (Everyone was laughing, but we can only imagine what happened when they got home.)

In a statement, the zoo acknowledged the filthy incident but suggested that the chimp’s behavior was fueled by the audience’s own antics.

“One of the chimpanzees is very focused on and likes to interact with people. Sometimes, this chimpanzee will exhibit behaviors that some people respond to with laughter, loud noises, and imitation. This, unfortunately, encourages even more of this behavior and resulted in the situation on Sunday,” the zoo stated in a Facebook post.

The YouTube video’s description also discourages “taunting” and “teasing” of animals in zoo habitats, stating: “Zoo staff would like to keep animals as calm and comfortable in their habitats as possible. It is critical to not tap on glass, shout at the animals, or attempt to feed them.”

Though the video is listed as having been filmed by a member of the zoo’s staff, the zoo, in its statement, said that it was taken by a guest and “not a current zoo employee.”

The zoo added that its staff met with a chimpanzee behavioral specialist over this past winter to encourage “more appropriate behaviors” among their animals. They also plan to install additional barriers to prevent such an incident from happening again.

Not everyone responding to the Facebook post agreed with the idea of more barriers, however, or the zoo apologizing for what happened ― as unfortunate as the incident was.

How ‘Jane The Virgin’ Gets Motherhood Right

For all its unexpected plot twists, “Jane the Virgin” is a show that’s consistent in its honest and progressive portrayal of strong women. Not only the titular Jane, but her mother, Xiomara, her grandmother, Alba, and Petra, the mother of her son’s half-siblings. (See? Plot twists.)

In the first season of “Jane,” Petra’s cast as the villain, the ambitious ex-wife of Raphael, the man Jane’s having a baby with. She’s a sharp dresser with business acumen and great hair. But she’s more than all that; she’s also lovelorn. As actress Yael Grobglas explained of her character in an interview with The Huffington Post, “she’s not just doing evil to do evil.” The show uses Petra to explore issues like thorny pregnancy and postpartum depression.

“Every time I’ve tried to predict what’s on the show, and I consider myself a pretty creative person, I’ve always been wrong,” Grobglas said. With “down-to-earth characters mixed with huge, telenovela moments,” there’s plenty of room for the characters to learn and grow. This way, they don’t fall into cliche; heroes are never just heroes, mothers are never just mothers, and villains are never just villains.

Below, Grobglas talks about playing a mother on screen, and ― oh yeah ― the show’s bold three-year jump.

What first interested you about the role of Petra?

When I first heard about the role of Petra, I didn’t know what was going to happen with her, I had no idea. I knew she was going to be the villain. I was a little hesitant about taking the role of a villain that could potentially go for ― if you’re lucky ― seven years, 10 years. And then I got on the phone with [showrunner] Jennie Urman, who told me Petra was never going to be two-dimensional, she would always be very complex, she’d be hated one moment and loved the next.

She’s really been so wonderful about keeping up with that. I would have never expected everything with Petra to happen.

Speaking of unexpected turns, last season you were given an extra part on the show, as Petra’s twin sister, Anezka.

I had no idea that was happening. I got the script, like we usually do, one or two days before we started filming, and I read that Petra was disguising herself and getting ready to run away. I thought it was because of her postpartum depression, and I was getting a little worried, because my first go-to thought is that I’m going to get killed off. I think that about everything. And then Anezka shows up at the end of the episode, and suddenly there’s two of me.

For a week beforehand, people who got the script before me were kind of trying to be nonchalant, going, “So, uh, did you read next episode?” And I was like, “No, Jesus, why?”

So I spoke to Jennie and she described her to me, and I was like, what is this character, what is she about? And she spoke about the accent, and she spoke about being a ferocious eater, and having personal space issues, and scratching people, and jumping backwards ― I call it “getting the fear” ― and immediately thought, I know somebody like that. I based her off my cat. And that’s how Anezka came to be.

Is it difficult to toggle between those two very different parts, or is it mostly just exciting?

I have so much more appreciation for people who do this long-term. I never thought about it, but as an actor I depend so much on my costars, and when you’re doing scenes with yourself, you have nobody to play off. You have to come so well-prepared, and predict what you’re going to do.

You touched on this a little already but both Petra and Anezka could be described as the show’s sympathetic villains. How do you approach playing a villain without making her seem purely evil?

I think the most important thing is really in the writing. The way Jennie explained it to me when we had our first conversation was that Petra was the hero of her own story. She really started the show at her most desperate point, she’s in love with someone and he’s leaving her. But she decides to have herself inseminated, and that goes horribly wrong, obviously. So most of her actions, as crazy as they may seem, are justified, to her. It’s not that much of a challenge for me, with such great writing.

She’s not just doing evil to do evil. And if you think about it, most of the crazy stuff she’s done is actually kind of selfless. It’s been to help her mother, or to protect her daughters, protect Raphael.

You mentioned her daughters ― this season we get to see another side of Petra, that of a confident and loving mother. How do you think motherhood fits in with everything else we know about Petra?

I think it’s been so fascinating, because the show manages to capture so many different aspects of what it is to be a mother. Everything went one way for Jane, and then Petra was a way to show a very different approach to motherhood. From the beginning, Jane’s birthing scene and Petra’s birthing scene couldn’t have been more opposite, and then she struggled with postpartum depression, which I thought was so wonderfully done, and such an interesting subject, and something that so many people suffer from.

And she doesn’t have the support system that Jane has; all she has is her crazy mother and crazy sister, left with twins, pretty much alone. I thought it was just wonderful that after the three-year jump, we see her almost dealing with motherhood as if it’s a business project. She’s like, I got this, I can do this.

The three-year jump was such a curveball! Was it a curveball for you, too?

Oh, absolutely. It was so interesting. As a cast, we had a very hard time dealing with knowing that we were losing Brett [Dier] as a cast member, that Michael was going to go. It was kind of a double thing, because we’re so attached to our characters that by now Michael is like a friend of ours. We care about our characters so much, Petra’s like a friend of mine. And that’s how we feel about Michael. It was almost like we’re about to lose someone we very much care about. So we were mourning Michael, and then also mourning the fact that we’re not going to see Brett every day. So that took some time for me to get over.

But then I absolutely loved how they dealt with it. It gave us all a chance to refresh our characters, and find them in a completely new place, and give them this whole new world, from zen Raphael to perfect-mother Petra.

I also wanted to ask about Jane and Petra’s relationship. They don’t always get along, but they don’t get into too many petty catfights, either. Do you have any thoughts on how relationships between women are usually portrayed on TV, and how “Jane the Virgin” manages to combat those stereotypes?

I think there are many different ways that female relationships are portrayed on TV. I think what’s great about Jane and Petra is that they didn’t go in the direction of they hit it off right away, they’re best friends, maybe they have an argument now and then but they’re best friends for life, and they also don’t hate each other. It’s kind of not here, not there. It’s almost like they need each other in spite of themselves.

Petra has a hard time admitting it to herself and to Jane, but she has this great respect for Jane. Jane is someone that she needs in her life. She has a hard time admitting that, because Jane basically has everything Petra doesn’t have.

They have these beautiful moments, and they have hard moments. It’s not a completely natural relationship, but you see that when something really difficult happens, something that’s actually life-or-death, they’re there for each other.

Hair Freezing Contest Is Hottest Thing In The Yukon Right Now

Things are pretty chill in Whitehorse, Yukon, in February, where the average temperature rarely exceeds 25 degrees Fahrenheit.

But things can still get heated, thanks to a chilling hair-freezing competition.

The Takhini Hot Pools, which has held the very cool contest every February since 2011, invites hot spring visitors to submit their best frozen hair photos in hopes of winning a first prize of $ 700 in cold hard cash.

Stay frosty ☃ ❄️♨️ #hotsprings #takhinihotsprings #exploreyukon

A post shared by Brett Elliot (@btelliot) on

The Hot Pools have offered some tips on how to get that freshly frozen look.

First, hair freezing is best when done in temperatures -20 Fahrenheit or colder. Any warmer and your hair may take too long to freeze.

Wet your head in the hot springs. Then allow the cold air to freeze your hair, including eyebrows and eyelashes.

People with very long hair should lay it down on the sides of the pool so it freezes in single, long strands.

Keep your ears warm by dipping them into the hot springs, but make sure not to get your hair wet ― that defeats the hair freezing.

It is beyond what I expected #takhinihotsprings #whitehorse #yukon #frozenhair #vacation #ilovehere

We’ve Got A Right To Be Mad About Beyoncé Losing ‘Album Of The Year’

No. Those who expressed their disappointment in Beyoncé losing the Album of the Year Award at Sunday Night’s Grammy Awards were not overreacting.

Yes, there are ostensibly “more important” things going on in the world than a multi-millionaire superstar losing one award on a night where she won two others, but it’s possible ― and even necessary ― to care about more than one thing at a time.

And this is worth talking about.

On a night that opened with a very political message from Jennifer Lopez who quoted Toni Morrison and said that “at this particular point in history, our voices are needed more than ever,” Beyoncé losing Album of the Year, the most important award of the night, felt like a much bigger loss than the usual award show snub.

Adele’s “25” is a good album. It was an immensely successful album. After five years outside of the limelight, Adele came back with a highly anticipated record that sold over 8 million copies in the United States alone in 2016. “Lemonade” sold only 1.5 million.

If the criteria for Grammy wins was based solely on records sold, then maybe Adele’s win for Album of the Year would make more sense, maybe it would be easier to accept. But even Adele herself said on stage that she couldn’t “possibly accept this award,”(though she did) and that “The ‘Lemonade’ album is just so monumental.”

She’s right. Again, “25” was a good album! But “Lemonade,” whether you enjoyed it or not, was a cultural event, a moment in which Beyoncé put all her personal, spiritual, and artistic cards on the table. It was a cohesive body of work that, as Beyoncé described it in her only acceptance speech of the night (for Contemporary Album) gave “voice to the pain,” and strength, of black women.

“Lemonade” said something and meant something to so many people, especially young women of color who saw themselves reflected in the stories and tableaux crafted by Beyoncé and her team (both in video and in song). Arguably the most popular black singer in the world had not only churned out a stellar piece of work, she’s also chosen for that work to be black as hellspecifically black, unavoidably black.

Because of “Lemonade,” phrases like “Becky with the good hair” and “Jackson Five nostrils” and “hot sauce in my bag” entered the mainstream lexicon. While others tried to claim them, dismantle them, and rework them for their own use, they still remained to intrinsically ours, so intrinsically black. That was huge. That was a moment

Lauryn Hill was the last black woman to win Album of the Year at the Grammys. That was in 1999. Since then, Beyoncé has become the most-nominated woman ever at the show, with a whopping 62 nominations. Of the three times she’s been nominated for Album of The Year, she’s lost out to Taylor Swift, Beck, and now Adele. As Adele said to the press Sunday night, “What the fuck does [Beyoncé] have to do to win Album of the Year?”

The disappointment and even the outrage flooding Twitter and Facebook in the aftermath of Bey’s snub should really come as no surprise. The Grammys have a long legacy of using important and popular black artists like Beyoncé, Rihanna and Kendrick Lamar to boost ratings while failing to give them the big noms and awards of the night. But, damn.

If even Beyoncé can’t get the top award of the night for a record like Lemonade,” after turning in an incredible performance (while pregnant with twins, no less), what exactly does that say about the black experience in America? Seriously? Yes, Beyoncé is the winner of many awards. She’s rich and successful and has definitely benefited in the past from her light skin and bleached locks. It’s interesting how, now that she’s incorporated her blackness and her politics more explicitly in her music, no longer here to just grind and sing catchy love songs to the masses, the systemic realities of being a proudly black woman in a white-dominated industry have come to light.

What’s important to remember is that Beyoncé is an artist. And that’s what’s so frustrating about America’s love of black culture. So often, black entertainment is sought after and greedily consumed, but it’s delegitimized as art because of its inherent blackness. Look at the histories of black musical art forms like jazz and hip-hop, cultural phenomenons that were looked on as nothing but fads until they were validated by white audiences and artists who consumed and regurgitated them for the mainstream.

That’s why “Lemonade” has meant so much to so many black people who needed (and continue to need) an album like this to exist. It’s nice that Adele said something in that moment up on stage. Though some chafed at her mention of what “Lemonade” meant not only to her but to her “black friends,” the album’s significance as a specifically powerful black cultural moment should have been acknowledged, and celebrated. It’s sad that it wasn’t the Recording Artists Academy that thought that was worth celebrating.

Sea to Summit Talus Series TSIII 1F / -17C Ultra-Dry Down? Sleeping Bag (Short – Right Hand Zip)

Sea to Summit Talus Series TSIII 1F / -17C Ultra-Dry Down? Sleeping Bag (Short – Right Hand Zip) : A bag for all seasons and activities, the warmest Talus will keep you cosy in all but the most extreme altitudes and latitudes without breaking your back or your bank balance. A quintessential mummy shaped sleeping bag featuring Ultra-Dry Down?. The Talus series boasts many of the features seen in higher priced bags and is ideal for a wide range of activities ? offering comfort, warmth and moisture shedding capability. The hood is designed to cocoon your head completely in a way that maximizes the available loft without making it feel claustrophobic. There is an adjustable collar to help fine-tune the warmth and seal out drafts. The drawcord channel in the collar and hood are buried deep within the down so there are no annoying harsh edges to push into your neck or face. The discreet zippered pocket is perfect for your MP3 player or valuables, and the main zipper (which can be joined to other Sea to Summit bags) has an anti-snag system that really works! The cut of the bag and baffles are engineered to prevent down shift and allow the down to reach its maximum loft (and therefore its maximum insulation value) ? simple in theory but complex to execute. It involves using differentially cut, three dimensional side-walls and curved baffles. The Talus features an improved 2D NanoShell? outer shell fabric, specially engineered for breathability (Moisture Vapor Transmission Rate: 7500 g/m2/24hr) and excellent water repellency (1000mm). This helps ensure that external moisture (such as condensation on the inner wall of a tent) doesn?t dampen your bag or your enthusiasm for venturing into the backcountry. The relaxed mummy shape of the Talus is designed to maximize thermal efficiency and minimize overall weight. It is cut with a larger hood, broader shoulder and chest area than many mummy bags: room to move comfortably without compressing the down and causing cold spots.

Valve Isn’t Interested in Developing for Consoles Right Now

Don’t expect to see Valve-developed games come to consoles anytime soon, as company founder Gabe Newell has come forward to express the company’s lack of interest in developing for restrictive platforms.

Speaking at a media roundtable event at the studio’s offices (via Eurogamer) Newell said, “We get really frustrated working in walled gardens.”

While the company released several games for consoles last generation, including Portal 2 and The Orange Box, Valve has so far shown no public interest in bringing its games to PS4 or Xbox One, despite console hardware sales being even better this generation.

SHOPPING DEALS UPDATE:

Now is the Time: Do the Next, Right Thing

We will make only one choice.

Throughout our lives, we do only one thing. Again and again, moment by moment, year after year. It is how we live our days, how we shape our lives.

Our choice is this: What is the next, right thing for us to do? Where, in this moment, will we place our time, our care, our attention? Do we remain as we are, do we move? do we speak or keep silent, attend to this person, or that task, or turn away, in this direction, or that?

Each new moment demands a fresh choice.

after every decision, there is yet another to be made. And another. Ours are not so often obviously dramatic choices. We are rarely called upon to know the time to change careers, the day to get married, the hour to leave the city of our birth. Most choices are small, quiet, intimate things that flow from us as a breath, as water exhaled from a mountain spring. Endless, simple, one by one thimbles of water tumble into the next, creating the smallest trickles playing this way and that. Still. Over time, with neither map nor plan – through surprising twists, curving around unforeseen obstacles-mere droplets of water will always invariably find their way down, down, through the valley, completing their pilgrimage at last to become one, an ancient and familiar melting, into the sea, from which it came.

At every point of resistance, any threat of change, our tiny stream makes a choice: To go right or left? Over or around? Or it may just stop, right where it is. Without moving, our stream becomes a shallow pool, creates a slowly growing fullness, waiting. Waiting for that singularly perfect moment when the only possible next thing is to spill itself out and over, stumbling and rushing everywhere along its way.

The stream knows nothing of what lies ahead. It is not conscious of planning for any possible future. It is simply following the path of least resistance, motivated by gravity. Still, how does the water “decide” to go right, or left, when approaching a boulder, a fallen tree? And yet, a choice is made. Inch by inch, the water does the next, right thing, perhaps encountering tiny rivulets or flowing creeks along the way. By the end of the journey, if we look back, we witness the gradual, evolving birth of what we now realize has, drop by drop, choice by choice, become a stream.

A stream is little more than an ongoing fidelity, a consecrated relationship. A never-ending conversation between water, gravity, earth, overcoming obstacles, in a relationship born over time, which gives birth to this astonishing miracle we then call, “stream.” This ancient, elemental rhythm between water and earth creates all the streams that saturate all the seas that cover all the world.

So it is with our lives. The only choice we ever make is one called out from us by a similarly vital inner gravity, an invisible thread that carries our life forward, until our life – this one wild and precious life, meets the world. In all its wonder and promise, in all its ferocity and confusion. Just as it is.

So. We must prepare. We will make choices. If fortune smiles upon us we will make good, honorable, strong choices. But every decision we make, no matter how small, shapes the ground of our being. Each choice helps form the foundation upon which we stand, and live, and act.

This is our field of battle: Here, who we are meets what is in the world. This essential, heroic relationship, this intimate communion between the quiet wisdom of our hearts, and the ways the world emerges, moment by moment, right before our eyes becomes our most reliable tool, our most potent weapon, our true north, a lifelong practice of deep and holy listening for that very next, right thing we will – make no mistake – absolutely, and sooner than we imagine, be required to choose.

Our lives hang in the balance. Surely, goodness and mercy will follow us all.

Start the New Year Right By Organizing Now

Organizing during the holiday…it’s practically an oxymoron, right? I know with all the whirlwind that leads up to the first of the year, the last thing we typically think about is organizing. However, with the New Year just days in front of us, you may want to consider how to make the last week stretch a homerun.

Here are a few things that I believe are helpful. And, really, these can lead you into the New Year with a plan. It may sound simple but I like to plan on a calendar. My plan consist of having both an immediate calendar and a long term calendar.

My immediate calendar consist of things that I need to complete leading up to the beginning of the year. This may be items like “attend Aunt Mary’s party” or “purchase new basketball shoes for my son’s end of year tournament”. It could also include tasks like packaging the receipts that I need for my current year’s taxes to ensure they are separate from anything that I will be tracking during the upcoming year. Either way, you get the idea.

My long term calendar consist of items that I plan to complete in the next month to six weeks. This includes items such as; inventory my product line or replace any of my tools that may be wearing out or need updating. Other areas of focus could be organizing my suite or even repainting it.

I typically ask myself two questions when determining which list an item should go on. First, is this an issue of urgency that has a timeline for completion? If the answer is “yes” then I place the task on my immediate calendar as long as it must be completed prior to the end of the year.

The next question that I ask myself is “what level of importance does this item have?” If the item is important but not urgent, I place it on my long term calendar.

For me, being disciplined enough to go through this simple exercise helps to alleviate stress as well as keep me on track. Look at this as a gift to yourself. This week, take 20 minutes for yourself and make note of the items that are urgent and important, then designate them on to the appropriate calendar. And most important, don’t forget to have a wonderful holiday!

Here Are Some Pro-Woman Groups You Can Support Right Now

After a campaign season marred by unrelenting misogyny, Donald Trump defeated Hillary Clinton to become this country’s president-elect, and many women are reeling. We’re grieving. We’re taking stock of how we got here. We’re getting IUDs. As Clinton said in her concession speech on Wednesday, these results are painful for a lot of people, and they will be for a long time.

Mercifully, this country has long had organizations that fight, every day, to empower women and keep them safe. And while it is, of course, OK to simply be still and feel whatever it is you’re feeling, there are things you can do right now if you feel like you’re crawling out of your skin. Perhaps consider this list (by no means exhaustive) of pro-women, pro-girls groups that can always use support:

American Civil Liberties Union fights to support reproductive rights, LGBTQ rights, racial justice, voting rights and free speech (to name a few). Take action. Make a gift.

Black Women’s Blueprint fights sexual violence against black women and girls. Donate here.

Boys & Girls Clubs of America helps provide a safe place for boys and girls to learn and play through programs aimed at fostering leadership, health, the arts, etc. Here are a few ways to give.

Center for Reproductive Rights works to improve the worldwide reproductive rights landscape using the law. Report a rights violation, call on Congress to support women or donate

NARAL Pro-Choice America fights to protect women’s legal right to abortion services in this country. DonateVolunteer

National Organization for Women (NOW), the feminist advocacy group, has been fighting for the women’s rights movement since the 1960s, promoting reproductive rights and an end gender-based inequality. (On Wednesday afternoon, the website was temporarily down but we will update soon.)

National Women’s Law Center works to create policies and laws that support girls and women ― particularly those who are low-income and have been discriminated against. Take action. Donate

Planned Parenthood provides healthcare to 1.5 million women and men every year in this country (despite being under constant threat by the GOP). Donate. Get involved here

RAINN is the largest organization in this country dedicated to ending sexual violence. Get involved by fundraising or helping with the national sexual assault hotline (among other volunteer opportunities). Donate

You Can Now Marry Right In Front Of Cinderella Castle At Disney World

If you’ve always dreamed of a fairy tale wedding, look no further.

You can now tie the knot at Walt Disney World Resort in Florida with none other than Cinderella Castle in the background.

“Couples have been seeking a celebratory location showcasing the iconic Cinderella Castle,” Korri McFann, marketing director for Disney’s Fairy Tale Weddings, said in a press release. “We are thrilled to have the opportunity to make those dreams a reality.”

East Plaza Garden, which is located in front of Cinderella Castle and in the heart of Magic Kingdom Park, will be available to host weddings for the very first time. It was recently renovated with new landscaping and a fountain, according to Michelle Baumann of Walt Disney World Public Relations, and can accommodate up to 100 guests.

But fairy tale weddings don’t come cheap; packages in the East Plaza Garden begin at $ 75,000. And the prices go up from there, depending on additions like a ride in Cinderella’s horse-drawn carriage and fireworks.

After the ceremony, couples can choose from a variety of venues for their reception, Baumann told The Huffington Post, including “unique specialty venues such as Atlantic Dance Hall or the Living Seas Salon.

Couples have been saying “I do” at Disney locations — including the theme parks and resorts all over the world — for almost 25 years, but never this close to the castle. The team at Disney’s Fairy Tale Weddings & Honeymoons coordinates more than 1,200 weddings at Walt Disney World Resort every year, many of which take place at Disney’s Wedding Pavilion adjacent to Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa.

What Back to the Future Got Right… and Wrong

2015-10-21-1445466461-5737418-Peter_Diamandis_Headshot.jpeg

By Peter Diamandis

Twenty-six years ago, Marty McFly and Doc Brown climbed into their time-traveling flying DeLorean and set the controls to the distant future — October 21, 2015 — which happens to be today.

This is a fun blog about the predictions that Back to the Future got right, the predictions they got wrong, and the amazing technologies we have today that they just completely left out.

For a $ 40 million budget, it’s pretty amazing what they achieved. So as you read these correct predictions, think about how you might have profited from these areas if you took action on them 26 years ago.

PREDICTIONS THAT “BACK TO THE FUTURE” GOT WRONG

Here are the technologies that aren’t quite here (yet).

Flying cars: While there are a number of companies like Zee.aero, Terrafugia and AeroMobil hard at work, this still may need an XPRIZE to give us the flying car.

Power clothing (self-drying, self-tying shoelaces): While not released, Nike claims it will release a pair of self-tying laces this year (2015) in commemoration of the movie.

Ubiquitous fax machines: For whatever reason, fax machines were a big deal in Back to the Future. They are basically a relic of the past now.

Hoverboards: Though a few companies have rigged gigantic magnets to simulate real life hoverboards, we haven’t found a way to make a practical, scalable version yet…

2015-10-21-1445467409-2920565-BTFFinal.jpg

Mr. Fusion: While many teams are claiming to get close to net-positive energy fusion, no one has yet… and even when they do, it’s unlikely to fit in the back of my car.

Well… a time machine: Though I wish we could all drive DeLoreans rigged with time machines, unfortunately, the laws of physics still prevent us from jumping around the space-time continuum at will.

A FEW AMAZING THINGS WE HAVE TODAY THAT THEY MISSED

So what did Back to the Future (potentially) miss? At least, what amazing technology do we have today that they didn’t highlight?

Rapid, cheap whole genome sequencing and editing: We now have the ability to sequence a full human genome for under $ 1,000. The technology is developing at 3x the rate of Moore’s Law. We now have the ability to cheaply and precisely edit the genome with CRISPR/CAS 9. This will open up a new frontier of health and longevity that will have enormous implications on the future.

3D Printing: You can 3D print just about anything these days from 300 different materials (including plastics, metals, concrete, chocolate and human cells) Complexity is free and scalability is inherent.

Emergence of AI: We are in the early days of Artificial Intelligence. Tens of billions of capital are being poured into an AI “arms race” over the last decade. One fun recent example is Tesla’s “autopilot” software upgrade that just came out. It can drive you autonomously on the highway.

On-Demand Economy: Amazon is working on same-day delivery mechanisms (possibly using drones). Uber has become ubiquitous as the simplest, most reliable way to get around.

GPS: We really take for granted how good the GPS units in our phones really are. They receive up-to-the-second traffic data, route us to the shortest path, and even give us “street view” or satellite imagery to investigate what a place looks like before we get there.

Private Spaceflight and Hyperloop: While Back to the Future flaunted flying DeLoreans, I’m proud of where we are with private spaceflight and the start of Hyperloop.

Work-Life Balance: Your Right to Love Your Life

“Excuse me” I said to the guard inside the courthouse behind the counter, are there any resting rooms inside this courthouse? I’m on jury duty and am feeling a bit tired, is there any place during lunch hour where I could lie down? He looked at me and said “restrooms, sure they are over there ” and pointed towards the stairs behind me. I said, oh no I don’t mean restrooms, I meant “resting rooms” as I put my hands under my cheek and leaned to the side, making my point of wanting to get a quick shut eye experience.

Now, realizing I probably sounded silly, I told him that where I am from in northern Europe there are, at universities and libraries for example, “resting rooms” for those needing to take a quick nap. He moved back, opened his eyes wider in surprise and laughed out his reply “well then, maybe I should move to Europe!”

We have all heard the term work-life balance, and I am sure we can all relate to feeling that we just don’t have enough time in a day to do the things we need to do. Sometimes this makes us very tired, as in the case when I wanted to take a nap at the courthouse.

Having read up on this topic for this post I mainly see the “balancing act” theme between life and work and the “who is responsible” theme (you or the company). All great, and I’d like to offer also, that you have the undeniable right to love your life. It is not just about having the right to a life (see the declaration of the Human Rights) but rather it is about thriving. There is a difference between doing something, going through the motions like a zombie and creating something, which drives and motivates us. If you don’t work – as in love your life, nothing works, including companies.

Thinking of having a right to love your life shifts the conversation a tad, adds another flavor more towards the idea of solidarity to make sure those rights happen for each other. A right lives in the realm of seriousness, ironically for this post many of concepts considered “rights” are protected in a court of law. A right is not up for negotiation, it is not a sometimes and someday kind of phenomenon and it is not solely up to the individual alone to “make it happen”. Dressing work-life balance in this way we push our aspirations up a level to think about what can be created to have people (and companies) thrive.

Being Swedish-American, having lived most of my life in Sweden and seven year working in LA and New York I have come to understand different shades of what makes life work from two different cultural ways of talking about things. It is the age-old conversation of be, do, have and how we balance these for a gratisfactory experience. In today’s world of business a creative mindset is the new “it” thing to possess, and cultures can assist in opening up to new ways of seeing something we look at every day. I understand culture can be a sensitive topic, but it is not the notion of cultures that create sensitivity in itself, it is our tendency to categorize and places one thing above the other. Perfectly fine when your shopping for a new sweater but not functional when understanding why people do what they do.

Cultures are in essence interpretations on much of the same set of universal values, distinguishable but always changing habits (Confucius). This becomes clear when some cultures have invented words for states, feelings and the world out there, whereas others have not. “Resting rooms” is apparently not a ubiquitous concept in the American English language and before I explained it the officer misheard me. He didn’t hear what he hadn’t heard before. Language matters, because language is the key with which we unlock how to understand our world and it affects processes, systems and how things work in a society. The fact that there was no resting room in the courthouse, doesn’t necessarily mean that the U.S. undervalues sleep, it just means sleep and napping didn’t belong in that specific context, or at least not in a designated area.

The conversation that people matter is not new, the school of Human Resources go back some time, but seeing what the world looks like (economic crashes, layoffs, income inequality) it is clearly not considered the most important thing. Profit is usually the most important thing. Boxall and Purcell (2011) in their book Strategy and Human Resource Management conclude that human capital can contain the most competitively valuable sources which sets a company apart, create creative companies and bring a vantage point in the market place. When access to resources alone cannot explain successes, something else is reasonably at play, could the x-factor be people? Yet, Piketty (2013) chooses to exclude human capital from the asset column in his book Capital in the Twenty-First Century, as an individual’s labor power, skills, training and abilities cannot be owned or traded on a market detached from the person they came from. Would you agree with that idea? There still is this uncertainty whether taking care of people matters in orders of magnitude, yet we all know in our hearts that if we put people first, before anything, all the time and always – everything else will follow. Of course at the heart of that conversation is that self care comes first, naps and all.

Were the Beatles Right About Love?

Were the Beatles right? Is love really all you need for a good marriage? Actually that’s a terribly destructive myth.

Love at first sight is a popular notion. Some relationships begin this way and, as luck would have it, blossom into good marriages. But usually when people immediately think that they’ve found him (or her) at last, they’re in fantasy land. They are imagining a wonderful kind of life together with someone they barely know. If they marry impulsively, they may soon find that they have too little in common for a lifelong relationship. Consequently, the chemistry fades away and not much else if left to build on.

Leading with Your Brain

Love is essential for a good lasting relationship. But the brain, as well as the heart, needs to be engaged to keep (what the Righteous Brothers called) “that loving feeling” alive and growing. Singles who want to get married are often advised to make a list of ten qualities they are looking for in a mate. Doing so helps get beyond the “follow your heart” cliché and, instead, to put thought into the process of deciding who is a good prospect for marriage.

I’m a strong believer in friendship first. If you want your future husband to be your best friend as well as your lover, spend enough time with him to learn whether the two of you are likely to be compatible in the long run. You’re more likely to successfully test yourselves as friends if you act more like a friend than as a lover while getting to know him over a period of at least a few months.

What about sex?

Don’t feel bound to anyone’s time table for when the right time is to become sexually involved. You may have heard that men move on to look for someone else if “nothing happens” by the third date.

I think this may be true for men who feel entitled to sex, regardless of whether they want a noncommittal relationship or one that leads to marriage. If your goal is marriage, it makes sense to avoid getting sexually involved before you feel ready to do so both emotionally and mentally. You will want to have as much time as you need to test the relationship as objectively as possible and of course, and you may also be guided by your own value system based on what your religion’s teachings or those from another source.

Distinguishing Sex from Love

Are you able to distinguish between sex and love? Sex gets the hormones flowing, especially, in women, oxytocin, which has been called the “love hormone” — for good reason. It causes women to feel emotionally bonded and can blind them to the other person’s shortcomings that they would probably recognize if they hadn’t compromised their objectivity. By avoiding getting too physically involved too soon, you’ll give yourself time to see if a real friendship develops, and if the potential exists for spending a lifetime together.

It’s a mistake for a marriage minded woman to have sex because she feel pressured to in order to keep a man interested in her. That’s not love and it’s no basis for a friendship that might lead to marriage. A man who doesn’t respect your boundaries is not for you.

Keeping Love Flourishing in Your Marriage

If you are already married to someone who meets your basic requirements for a life partner, be grateful. But that is just the beginning. Love can grow or fade. If you want to keep love alive, it is up to you. You’ve taken the first step by choosing a partner with whom the chemistry is good and who shares enough of your interests, values and lifestyle preferences for the two of you to be compatible over time.

Benefits of Marriage Meetings

A great way to keep your relationship on track is by holding a weekly marriage meeting, which is a short, gentle conversation that cover all the basics, as described step by step in my book, Marriage Meetings for Lasting Love: 30 Minutes a Week to the Relationship You’ve Always Wanted. Marriage meetings foster romance, intimacy, teamwork, and smoother resolution of issues

By regularly investing a small amount of time and energy, you and your spouse can enjoy both love and a true friendship that lasts for a lifetime.

Born at the Right Time

Born at the Right Time

It is rare in history for people to link their identity with their generation, and even rarer when children and adolescents actually shape society and influence politics. Both phenomena aptly describe the generation born in the decade following the Second World War. These were the baby boomers, viewed by some as the spoiled, selfish generation that had it all, and by others as a shock wave that made love and peace into tangible ideals. In this book, Doug Owram brings us the untold story of this famous generation as it played out its first twenty-five years in Canadian society. Beginning with Dr Spock’s dictate that this particular crop of babies must be treated gently, Owram explores the myth and history surrounding this group, from its beginning at war’s end to the close of the 1960s. The baby boomers wielded extraordinary power right from birth, Owram points out, and laid their claim on history while still in diapers. He sees the generation’s power and sense of self stemming from three factors: its size, its affluent circumstance, and its connection with the 1960s – the fabulous decade of free love, flower power, women’s liberation, drugs, protest marches, and rock ‘n’ roll. From Davy Crockett hats and Barbie dolls to the civil-rights movement and the sexual revolution, the concerns of this single generation became predominant themes for all of society. Thus, Owram’s history of the baby-boomers is in many ways a history of the era. Doug Owram has written extensively on cultural icons, Utopian hopes, and the gap between realities and images – all powerful themes in the story of this idealistic generation. A well-researched, lucid, and humorous book, Born at the Right Time is the first Canadian history of the baby-boomers and the society they helped to shape.

A Dozen Reasons Art Lovers Should Be in Scandinavia Right Now

The Magic North: Summer Biennials, Festivals and Exhibitions in Scandinavia 2015

With temperatures neither blistering nor blustery, summer in Scandinavia reveals the magic of the northern landscape, from the spectacular fjords of Norway, to the forests of Finland. This year in particular, there is quite a convergence of festivals, biennials and notable exhibitions occurring in late August in Finland, Sweden, Denmark and Norway. From the historical to the contemporary, from city centers to the far-flung reaches of the Arctic Circle, there is an abundance of events and exhibitions drawing art lovers to the northernmost reaches of Europe.

Theodor Kittelsen, The River Sprite, illustration for Troldskab, 1887. Collection of the National Museum, Norway. Photo: The National Museum, Norway, Jacques Lathio.

A mystical atmosphere suffuses many of the paintings in “The Magic North,” currently at the Ateneum Art Museum in Helsinki (June 18 – September 27, in cooperation with the Norwegian National Museum, where it was shown earlier this year), an exhibition of Norwegian and Finnish fin-de-siècle and early 20th century works, from artists such as Edvard Munch, Gerhard Munthe, Hugo Simberg and Theodor Kittelsen. In these works, the artists mixed the heady influence of European symbolism with the folkloric traditions of their home countries, producing such unforgettable images as Kittelsen’s iconic wide-mouthed trolls and vacant eyed river sprites. In such company, even the more straightforward and naturalistic landscapes and portraits seem to evince a kind of strange, animistic energy.

Hannah Ryggen, Fear, 1936. Creative Commons License BY.

Under the influence of the Arts and Crafts Movement of the turn of the century, artists of that time revived certain folk arts and traditional crafts, in search of a national style of expression. Norway’s rich history and tradition of tapestry weaving inspired artists of the period, such as Gerhard Munthe, who, to his chagrin, became quite famous for his achievements in this “minor art.” Yet Scandinavia’s most distinctive voice in tapestry weaving was yet to emerge: in the 1930s, Swedish-Norwegian artist Hannah Ryggen became known for her idiosyncratic, expressive and wholly modern tapestries, weaving together political and personal themes. An exceptional collection of her works spanning three decades is currently on view in the exhibition “Hannah Ryggen: Weaving the World” at the National Gallery in Oslo (June 12 – October 4).

Artists like Ryggen, however, were working against the grain of the 20th century, as modernism and formalism took hold in Western art. Denmark’s Ordrupgaard Museum is taking a look at a hitherto overlooked aspect of a group of works made by one of modernism’s masters, produced in his later years. “Matisse and the Eskimos” (August 21 – November 29) presents works from Matisse’s paper cut outs, focusing on a group of works inspired by a collection of Inuit masks belonging to his son-in-law and the books of the Danish polar explorer Knud Rasmussen.

Maria Friberg, From the Series “Still Lives” (4), 2005. Courtesy of the Gothenburg Art Museum.

At the Göteborg Museum of Art, in Sweden, “The Romantic Postmodernism” (May 30 – September 13) explores links to the art historical past in a selection of works of Nordic art from the 1980s to the present. These contemporary works evince connections — aesthetic or otherwise — to the Romantic landscape, including early photographs by Olafur Eliasson, abstract paintings by Rolf Hanson and photographs by Maria Friberg.

Installation view, After Babel / Poetry will be made by all! / 89plus, Moderna Museet, 2015. Photo: Åsa Lundén, Moderna Museet.

While “The Romantic Postmodernism” looks to contemporary art made in Scandinavia, an exhibition at the Moderne Museet Stockholm takes a more international outlook, exploring the pluralism of the present in an exhibition titled “After Babel” (June 13 – August 30), curated by Daniel Birnbaum and Ann-Sofi Noring. As one would expect, language takes center stage in “After Babel,” with works by Yael Bartana, Etel Adnan, Haegue Yang, Rivane Neuenschwander and others. Also occupying center stage is an actual tower — a concept by Simon Denny in collaboration with architect Alessandro Bava — that gradually and evocatively winds its way through the history of the intermingling of art and industry. And while at the Moderne Museet, don’t miss Adrián Villar Rojas’s major solo exhibition, “Fantasma,” on until October 25.

In Copenhagen, five contemporary art centers are joining together to present an exhibition entitled “TRUST” (August 29 – October 25), curated by Sonia Dermience, featuring more than forty artists, with parties, performances, films, an online radio station and more. This is just one of many eruptions of art going on in Copenhagen, timed to coincide with Copenhagen Art Week (August 21 – August 30), which kicked off with the international art fair CHART at Kunsthal Charlottenborg last weekend. Sixty galleries, museums, project spaces, fairs and art centers across the city are participating in this weeklong art bacchanal, and the art continues to spread throughout the city, beyond institutional walls and into the subways and the streets.

For fans of street art, next week the Nuart Festival (September 3 – October 11) will open for its 9th edition in Stavanger, Norway. Year by year, this picturesque Norwegian port town is adding to its collection of public murals painted by renowned international street artists. This year’s invited artists include Iranian duo Icy & Sot, Italian artist Pixelpancho and New York legend Futura, among others. Nuart Festival also features a discursive component in Nuart Plus, a symposium program exploring issues relevant to street art and its development.

Lastly, the biennials: there are four biennial art exhibitions occurring right now in Scandinavia, each with its own distinct character and setting. And a fifth is set to open in the next week: the Göteborg International Biennial for Contemporary Art (September 12 – November 22), curated by Elvira Dyangani Ose, which features an exciting roster of artists, such as Kader Attia, Kerry James Marshall and Lynette Yiadom-Boakye, under the theme “A Story Within A Story.”

The 7th Turku Biennial (June 10 – August 30) takes place at Aboa Vetus & Ars Nova in Turku, Finland, with this year’s theme, “The Unexpected Guest,” driving the curatorial process. Half of the artists were chosen by the curators of the Turku Biennial, while the other half were invited by those artists. There are many surprising moments in the Turku Biennial, but highlights include the absurdist videos of Erkka Nissinen, the unsettling sculptures of the Finnish art collective Anna Breu and photographs by Aino Kannisto and Satu Haavisto.

The city of Örebro in Sweden is host to the largest public art biennial in Scandinavia, now in its fifth year. OpenART 2015 (June 14 – September 6) showcases 130 artworks by 72 artists from 19 countries within Örebro’s city center. This year features a special initiative, curated by Feng Boyi, to bring 13 contemporary Chinese artists to the Swedish biennial including artists Ai Weiwei, Xu Bing and Cheng Dapeng, and raising the biennial’s international profile. Works range from playful sculptures situated in the river Svartån, an oversized park bench and a model of the city entirely made of sweets and pastries.

Daniel Steegmann Mangranè, Phantom (kingdom of all the animals and all the beasts is my name), 2013-2015. Courtesy of the artist.

Momentum 8 (June 13 – September 27), in Moss, Norway, inundates the viewer with various levels of sensory deprivation and sensorial enhancement, from a virtual reality environment enabled by an oculus rift device by Daniel Steegmann Mangranè, a participatory work involving both multi-sensory illusions and sensory deprivation by artist duo Lundahl & Seitl, to the colorful, immersive fur-filled installation by Hrafnhildur Arnardottir a.k.a Shoplifter. The theme here is “Tunnel Vision,” accompanied by a thought-provoking reader addressing the shifting social priorities between the Internet and the public sphere, as well as the concept of “Nordic seclusion.” It’s a fascinating show with far-reaching intellectual, theoretical, and curatorial ideas.

Landscape image from Lofoten. Courtesy of Lofoten International Art Festival (LIAF). Photo: Kyell Ove Storvik.

For the ultimate experience of the remote northern lands, however, one should travel up to Norway’s Lofoten Islands — where the Lofoten International Art Festival (LIAF, August 28 – September 27) takes place. Located on the northwest coast, just above the Arctic Circle, the landscape is dramatic, rugged, and staggeringly beautiful. Lest the landscape upstage the art on display, LIAF 2015, entitled “Disappearing Acts,” relents to its environmental context by gathering a collection of ephemeral, performance-based works, sculptures submerged into the sea, and an exhibition of works staged in a soon-to-be-demolished building. It begs the question — would Scandinavia still be such an extraordinary and beautiful place, if we weren’t around to appreciate it?

24 Questions Black People Need White People To Answer, Like Right Now

“Do y’all really think Miley is the one who created twerking? Really?”

This is just one of “24 Questions Black People Have For White People,” according to a new video released by Buzzfeed.

Five black people pose questions that open dialogue around white privilege, appropriation and more. Some other necessary questions they ask are: “Why is it that white crime is seen as an isolated incident but black crime is a representation of my entire community,” or “Why do you want to say the N-word so badly” and ”Why is it that white people always act as though they’ve discovered a new trend when people of color have been doing it for virtually years?”

White people often appropriate black culture without giving us credit — from slang words we created to the hairstyles we rock – and we want to know why!

See the rest of the questions in the video above.

What Mindfulness App Is Right for You?

How do you choose from the hundreds of mindfulness apps out there? There are over 500 mindfulness apps available, but some are better than others.

A new study published in the Journal of Medical Internet Research sorted through hundreds of mindfulness mobile apps and ranked 23 of them. Now it’ll be a little bit easier to find one that works for you.

Mindfulness based programs in person have been found to be effective for reducing stress, anxiety, and depression. Jon Kabat-Zinn, the creator of the structured 8-week course Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR), defines mindfulness as “paying attention on purpose, in the present moment, and non-judgmentally to the unfolding of experience moment by moment.”

However, it’s unclear if you can reap the same benefits of mindfulness programs with mobile apps. There is only one scientific study on the effectiveness of a mindfulness app (Headspace app). Users who tried the Headspace app for 10 days showed improvement in mood and fewer symptoms of depression.

We rely on our smartphones more and more (25% of page views currently come from mobile devices), so it helps to figure out what apps are right for your needs. The new study ranks 23 mindfulness mobile apps using a standardized tool designed for mobile health apps called the Mobile Application Rating Scale (MARS), which rates aspects like ease of use, look, and overall satisfaction.

Here are the top 4 mindfulness apps based on the study (ratings are out of 5 = excellent):

  1. Headspace (Overall Rating 4.0)
  2. Smiling Mind (Overall Rating 3.7)
  3. iMindfulness (Overall Rating 3.5)
  4. Mindfulness Daily (Overall Rating 3.5)

The lowest rated app was Mindfulness Trainer (Overall Rating 2.6).

Check out the table below summarizing the rankings and app features to see what will work best for you.

What did the apps include?

Most of the apps included breathing exercises and body scans. Here’s a sampling of the types of exercises in the apps:

  • Breath awareness: Bring attention to each breath
  • Body scan: Bring attention to body parts, from the toes and up towards the head
  • Sitting meditation: Meditate in a seated posture
  • Walking meditation: Walk with attention and careful pacing
  • Loving kindness (Metta) meditation: Send love and kindness to oneself and others
  • Passing thoughts and emotions: Notice and let go thoughts and feelings
  • Mountain meditation: Imagine yourself as a mountain
  • Lake meditation: Imagine yourself as a lake
  • Three-minute breathing: Be aware (1 minute), focus attention (one minute), and grow attention (one minute)

Most of the apps had two or more of these exercises.

What app features best fit your personality?

Likes to Level Up. If you’re someone who likes to complete levels and move on, then consider apps with step-by-step programs:

  • Headspace (Free 10 day program with 10 minute guided meditations)
  • Smiling Mind (10 weeks based on age group)
  • Mindfulness Daily (21 day mindfulness exercises)
  • Simply8 (3 weeks with 8 guided meditation based on themes)
  • Meditation without Borders (4 weeks with guided meditation 20 minutes daily)

Loves Social Media. If being connected to social media motivates you, try apps that allow you to share your experience on Facebook and Twitter like: Headspace, Meditacious, Meditation without Borders, Mindfully Me, Mindfulness Daily, Rhythm Free, Simply8, Smiling Mind, Stop, Breathe & Think, Take A Chill, The Meditation App with Michael Stone, and The Mindfulness App.

Reader. If you like to learn information by reading, try ACT Coach or Complete Mindfulness. Both contain detailed in-app texts on mindfulness.

Visual Learner. If you prefer not to read as much, try Headspace, which delivers information about mindfulness in the form of videos and infographics.

In Touch With Emotions. If you like to track how you’re feeling, these three mindfulness apps include ways to track your mood: Smiling Mind, Mindfulness Daily, and Stop, Breathe and Think.

Likes to change it up for the occasion. If you want different meditations for when you’re at the gym, sleeping, or on work breaks, try Buddhify 2 or Meditation Oasis (an app which was not reviewed in the study). They offer guided meditations and themed exercises based on your situation.

Designer with a good eye. If you’re sensitive to aesthetics, try Headspace or Smiling Mind. These two apps ranked highest in the aesthetics category.

Beginner. For those new to mindfulness, start with the top 4 apps from the recent study. And don’t give up if the first app you download doesn’t seem to work for you. You might need a different voice or interface.

Every app uses varying voices, work flow styles, and types of guided meditation, so try a variety of apps to see what sticks. At the end of the day, the most important thing is that you feel drawn to practice everyday.
