Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson Jokes He’s ‘Surrounded by Only Women’ After Announcing Baby Girl News

It’s raining girls for Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson.

Shortly after the actor announced that he and girlfriend Lauren Hashian are expecting their second child togeether – another little girl! – he stopped by The Ellen DeGeneres Show, where the host congratulated him on the new addition to the family.

“Lauren and I are so happy,” the 45-year-old star said, before pointing out that it’s normal for him to be the only guy in a family of women. (The baby girl will be Johnson’s third daughter. He and Hashian share Jasmine Lia, who turns 2 on Dec. 16, and he’s also father to 16-year-old Simone Garcia Johnson.)

“The crazy thing is, I was raised by women, and still to this day, I’m totally and completely, 100 percent surrounded by only women!” Johnson said. “And I love it.”

DeGeneres replied, “That’s actually a good thing.”

“It’s a wonderful thing,” he agreed.

Johnson also welcomed a surprise guest during the Ellen appearance: his Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle costar Kevin Hart, who just welcomed a new baby himself.

DeGeneres said Hart was supposed to appear on her show a few weeks ago, but he missed it for a pretty good reason: his wife, model Eniko Parrish, went into labor with son Kenzo Kash, born Nov. 21.

“It was tough. I had to choose,” the 38-year-old comedian joked. “She was like four centimeters dilated, and I was like, ‘It’s the baby or Ellen.’ It was a conversation.”

RELATED VIDEO: Baby Girl on the Way for Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson and Girlfriend Lauren Hashian

Hart also congratulated his pal for his new addition, but not without making a jab.

“He can’t make boys!” Hart quipped.

But Johnson quickly shot back, “Well, once Kevin finds out who the dad is for his boy, it’s going to be beautiful,” causing Hart to crack up.

On Monday, Johnson and Hashian stepped out for the Los Angeles premiere of his upcoming film Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle at the TCL Chinese Theatre where the actor lovingly put his hand around his partner of a decade while the singer/songwriter cradled her baby bump.

Johnson announced the baby news on Monday with a little help from the pair’s daughter Jasmine.

“Our Jasmine Lia would like to make a big announcement – IT’S A GIRL,” the former WWE star captioned a photo of his toddler posing in front of the family Christmas tree with a sign that read, “It’s a Girl! Can’t wait to be a big sister! And finally be the boss!”

He concluded the caption, writing, “@laurenhashianofficial and I are boundlessly grateful for this blessing as this spring we’ll welcome our second baby. Plus, Jazzy is excited to boss around and protect her lil’ sis. And once again, big daddy is completely surrounded by beautiful estrogen and loving, powerful female mana. All girls. One dude. And a boy dog. I wouldn’t have it any other way. #ItsAGirl #GratefulMan #TequilaTime.”

Southern rock pioneer Gregg Allman dies

Gregg Allman, whose soulful vocals made the Allman Brothers Band one of rock’s top acts in the 1970s, has died at the age of 69.
Entertainment News – Latest Celebrity & Showbiz News | Sky News

ENTERTAINMENT SPECIALS:

Gregg Allman, Classic Rock Legend Of The Allman Brothers Band, Dead

Gregg Allman, one of the two brothers from legendary rock band the Allman Brothers Band, has died. He was 69.

He “passed away peacefully at his home in Savannah, Georgia,” according to a statement on Allman’s official website. “Gregg struggled with many health issues over the past several years. During that time, Gregg considered being on the road playing music with his brothers and solo band for his beloved fans, essential medicine for his soul. Playing music lifted him up and kept him going during the toughest of times.”

Allman was born on Dec. 8, 1947, in Nashville. He was also born a ramblin’ man, if his band’s 1973 classic rock hit was any indication. He, along with his brother Duane, helped to create one of the most successful classic rock bands of all time. With that came not just music, but drugs, women and ― at times ― tragedy, including the early death of Duane.

In his later years, Allman developed hepatitis C, and suffered from an irregular heartbeat and a respiratory infection and had to have a liver transplant. In 2017, he canceled a planned summer tour, sparking worries about his health.

Allman was born to Willis Allman, a WWII veteran who stormed Normandy Beach, came back to his bride after the war, and had two sons. His father’s life was cut short when Gregg was just 2 years old. After Willis Allman offered a stranger a ride home from a bar one night, the man fatally shot him in the back.

Neither Gregg nor Duane showed any interest in emulating their father’s military career. The boys hated the military school their mother sent them to, but found their footing in music while there, according to Rolling Stone.

“I learned to play mostly from black people,” Allman told The Guardian in 2015. “We used to listen to a station that called itself ‘The black spot on your dial.’ It played Muddy Waters and Howlin’ Wolf, and it hit Duane and me like spaghetti hitting a wall.”

By the time the Allman Brothers Band was formed in 1969, Gregg and Duane were legitimate country hippies ― long-haired, drug-smoking free-loving spirits. Duane played guitar, with Gregg on vocals. Other founding members of the band included drummers “Butch” Trucks and Jai “Jaimoe” Johnny Johnson, along with “Dickey” Betts on guitar and Berry Oakley on bass.

The Allman Brothers Band blended country, jazz, blues and Southern rock in such seamless riffs, pounding drums and twangy vocals that it earned them a place in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1995, and a Lifetime Achievement award at the Grammys in 2012. The movie “Almost Famous” was also, in part, inspired by the band.

The Allman Brothers Band produced their biggest hits in the late ‘60s and early ‘70s, including “Ramblin’ Man,” “Midnight Rider” and “Whipping Post.” During this time, the band experimented heavily with drugs and attracted many groupies on tour.

“Gregg was just a pretty boy,” drummer Butch Trucks told Rolling Stone in 1999. “He had blond hair, and the girls were hanging all over him.”

In his book My Cross To Bear, Gregg bragged about his sexual exploits.

“I would have women in four or five different rooms,” Allman wrote about staying in hotels while on tour. “Mind you, I wouldn’t lie to anybody; I’d just say, ‘I’ll be right back.’”

During those earlier years, he and his bandmates were also experimenting with drugs, including (but not limited to) PCP, cocaine and speed. The band loved psychedelic mushrooms so much, they made them their unofficial logo and tattooed a mushroom on each of their calves, according to Rolling Stone.

In 1971, just as the band found itself being propelled into stardom, Duane Allman died in a motorcycle accident. He was  24.

“Duane was the king of laughter, always making jokes,” Gregg Allman told The Guardian in 2015. “You’ve got to keep laughing. It was what Duane would have done, and wanted us to do.”

At Duane’s funeral, Gregg played songs on his older brother’s antique guitar.

“This is a very old guitar, a very beautiful piece,” he said to a crowd of 300. “It was made in 1920 and I’m very proud to have it. And I’m very proud that you all came.”

In 1975, Allman married singer Cher in Las Vegas. The marriage lasted nine days, ending after Allman allegedly pulled a knife on her while trying to score heroin. They reconciled after learning Cher was pregnant with their son, Elijah Blue.

In 1977, Cher divorced Allman for good. The final straw was reportedly at an awards show, when Allman passed out face-first in a plate of spaghetti.

“Every now and then,” Allman wrote in his 2012 memoir, “I’ll think of all the hell I caused other people over the years.”

Allman eventually embraced sobriety.

“I’m doing great,” Allman told the Savannah Morning News in 2013. “I’ve been clean and sober for 19 years.”

Rest easy, midnight rider.

CORRECTION: A previous version of this story gave the wrong year of Allman’s birth. Language has also been changed regarding Allman’s role in “Ramblin’ Man.”

Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson Is Having Trouble Accepting That ‘Baywatch’ Is A Bad Movie

When one of the biggest laughs in your movie revolves around the supposed hilarity of Zac Efron fondling a dead man’s scrotum, it’s probably a good move to check your outrage over its critical reception.

If you’ve somehow been able to remain ignorant to its relentless marketing campaign (seriously, how?), “Baywatch” hits theaters Friday and critics are already savaging the movie with a 19 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes. Some have compared watching the reboot to sitting in a wet bathing suit for a prolonged period, while others have conceded it’s stupidly entertaining at best.

The movie’s star, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, however, is on a one man social media mission to convince the world that “Baywatch” isn’t as bad as everyone’s saying it is. Cue the actor launching into an almost Trumpian tweetstorm on Thursday about how out of touch the media is with what the the public wants.

He kicked it off by reminding us all of the “extremely high scores” from fans.

Then he posted a story about the critics score on Rotten Tomatoes rising from its 13 percent to a slightly less embarrassing 18 percent.

“Yay positive upticks,” he tweeted. “Fans LOVE the movie. Critics HATE it. What a glaring disconnect. People just want to laugh & have fun.”

Next he spent time praising some fans and critics who actually liked the movie with some choice retweets and knocks at those who laughed in the theater, but trash the film publicly.

And to finish off, Johnson took one more jab at the “Baywatch” naysayers, reminding everyone once again of just how differently the fans and the media feel about the movie.

“Oh boy, critics had their venom & knives ready,” he wrote. “Fans LOVE the movie. Huge positive scores. Big disconnect w/ critics & people.”

Considering the way things are headed, “Baywatch” will likely get a sequel and Johnson will make the White House home within the decade, so maybe we should submit and take a bite of what The Rock is cooking.

The Rock Announced His 2020 Presidential Bid On ‘SNL’ (Kind Of)

One of the most likable men in Hollywood may have just announced his presidential bid for 2020.

After weeks of teasing a run for the presidency, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson told America “I’m in” during the season finale of “Saturday Night Live” this weekend. The pro wrestler-turned-actor said he was officially running for president starting that night, right after Alec Baldwin awarded him his Five-Timers Club velvet jacket, to mark Johnson’s fifth time hosting the show.

“In the past, I never would have considered running for president. I mean, I didn’t think I was qualified at all,” Johnson joked. “But now I’m actually worried that I’m too qualified.”

Johnson also took the time to announce his running mate: the equally likable celebrity Tom Hanks.

The charming duo made their case for why they are the perfect picks to lead the United States of America ― and they were fairly convincing.

“The truth is, America needs us,” Hanks said. “No one can seem to agree on anything anymore except for two things: pizza and us.”

Hanks joked that the duo would get 100 percent of the vote because Hanks ― who’s “fought in World War II in like 10 different movies” ― would win the senior vote.

“And I, of course, would get the minority vote,” Johnson added. “Because everyone just assumes that I’m, well, whatever they are.”

Johnson delighted fans this month when he discussed his political ambitions in a GQ profile and called a presidential campaign “a real possibility.” A national poll suggested that Johnson could potentially win against President Donald Trump if he ran as a Democrat in the 2020 presidential election.

The actor later said in the monologue that he and Hanks were only joking, but then he offered a few words of patriotic encouragement.

“When it comes to politics, we need more poise and less noise,” Johnson said. “Americans deserve strong, capable leaders ― leaders who care about this country and care about its people.”

To which Hanks replied, “Uh, Dwayne, that kind of sounds like you and me.”

Then, with their hands held high, the two national treasures dropped their campaign banner and yelled, “We’re doing it!”

So is Johnson/Hanks 2020 really happening? Only time will tell.

Chris Rock Gets Brutally Honest About His Cheating And Divorce On Tour

Chris Rock is opening up about his divorce, both on and off the stage.

Currently in the middle of his first nationwide tour in years, Rock sat down with Rolling Stone and shared candid details about his divorce from Malaak Compton-Rock, his wife of 19 years. The pair announced their separation in February 2014 and finalized their divorce, which included a custody battle, in August 2016.

Rock jokingly says he’s on the “alimony tour,” Rolling Stone’s Stephen Rodrick writes.

In his article, Rodrick describes how the comedian brought up his divorce during a show in Denver and described his infidelities:

“’I was a piece of shit,’ says Rock as the crowd goes quiet. He segues into his infidelities and gets disarmingly specific, describing three women: one famous, one semifamous, and one a member of the retail class.

Later, Rodrick writes:

“Rock mentions in his act that he thought he could get away with bad behavior in his marriage because he was the famous breadwinner. He now knows the opposite is true. ‘That’s bullshit,’ he says, rolling his eyes. ‘That actually goes the other way. My faults are magnified. Your significant other, if they really love you, has a high opinion of you. And you let them down.’

Rock also told Rodrick that while he talks about his divorce during his act, he’s toned it down ― because it’s unfair that he has a microphone and his former wife does not.

“I asked myself, ‘Do I want to be angry for a year?’ It’s not a cool place to be. It’s not healthy,” Rock said.

You won’t find any online videos of Rock’s candid comments, because his “Total Blackout” tour asks audience members to store their phones and other devices in secure pouches that are only unlocked at the end of the show. But the star recently inked a two-special deal with Netflix and plans to tape one of those specials in December.

Rock has been known for his searing commentary on married life, famously saying, “Marriage is so tough, Nelson Mandela got divorced — he got out of jail after 27 years of torture, spent six months with his wife and said, ‘I can’t take this shit no more.’”

Head over to Rolling Stone to read the full interview.

A History Of All-Girl Bands And The Rock World That Tried To Keep Them Out

It was 1964 and singer Genyusha “Goldie” Zelkowitz had a problem. The all-girl band she formed in 1962 with drummer Ginger Bianco, Goldie and the Gingerbreads, had a major label record contract and an upcoming Las Vegas stint ― but the bassist, Nancy Peterman, had just told the band that she was pregnant. She’d formed an attachment to the organist of a band they’d been performing with; things had taken their natural course. In the 1960s, birth control for unmarried women was still illegal in certain states. Roe v. Wade was not yet a glimmer in the Supreme Court’s eye, and an attempt to get her an illicit procedure fell through. The situation was unsurprising, and the conclusion was unfortunate: Peterman had to leave the band.

Zelkowitz, who now goes by Genya Ravan, practically explodes with laughter remembering the incident now, 50 years later, during a phone conversation. “She kept saying she was ‘so lonely’!” Ravan hoots. “Had I known I would have bought her a vibrator.” A vibrator and a career, or a sexual partner and parenthood: That’s a choice The Beatles likely never had to make.

For Ravan, who was determined to make it in the music business, settling down wasn’t an option. After forming Goldie and the Gingerbreads, she saw the branding benefits of keeping the lineup all women, to capitalize on the exotic appeal of an all-girl rock ’n’ roll band. But over the years, they lost members, and it was difficult to fill all the parts in the group with women.

“A lot of the girls that were canned down the line … they wanted to have a family, they wanted to have children,” said Ravan. “There’s no room for that here.”

Womanhood used to usher women off the stage in fairly obvious, biological ways. But it’s 2017. Seven years ago, Pink put in a rousing performance at the American Music Awards while expecting a baby. In February of this year, Beyoncé performed gravity-defying moves during a Grammy performance while pregnant ― with twins.

Nonetheless, pockets of the music world remain startlingly male. Our greatest pop stars today might be women, but in instrument-heavy rock ― indie, punk, metal and beyond ― the standard-issue band is still a group of three to six guys. Less common: a group of male musicians with a female vocalist, or even a female keyboardist or bassist. Least common: a band comprised primarily or entirely of female musicians.

The music internet periodically offers up listicles of all-women bands to check out, which feature a common core cast of incredible indie groups: Hinds, Ex Hex, The Prettiots, Chastity Belt, Warpaint and so on. Plenty has been written about the the chart-topping pop-rock sister group Haim, but even in a diverse musical landscape of EDM, hip-hop, pop and hybrid music, a wide variety of all-male bands still flourishes. Why is the all-female band relatively elusive?

One might be tempted to blame women as a group. Perhaps we’re biologically uninterested in playing electric guitar, much like advanced algebra and video games. Maybe there simply aren’t girls out there with the chops and dedication to succeed. But ― much as with mathematics and video games ― a closer look at the picture suggests that the problem isn’t that women are rejecting rock. It’s that rock is rejecting women.

But how is the music world fencing women out? Picking on the visible gatekeepers is easy, and in many ways fair: Record labels, magazines and music festivals don’t tend to give women artists an equal platform. Last year, a HuffPost analysis of the gender breakdown of acts at 10 major festivals over the past five years found that the vast majority of performers were male. “[A]ll-male acts make up the overwhelming majority of festival lineups, ranging from 66 percent of all performers (Outside Lands and Governors Ball) to 93 percent (Electric Zoo),” HuffPost Women’s Editor Alanna Vagianos concluded. An LA Times piece on Coachella’s specific problems with women noted that, at the time it was written, only one female act had ever headlined the festival, out of over 40 headliners in its history.

Music media seems little better. In 2016, KQED Arts pointed out in December, exactly zero women made the cover of Rolling Stone ― no Beyoncé, no Rihanna, no Alessia Cara, no Hayley Williams. Women who do snag coverage by major outlets routinely see their musical chops downplayed in favor of their sex appeal, or wind up relegated to special women’s issues or listicles.

The problem, though, starts way before the point when the organizers of Coachella or Bonnaroo are scouting acts, and before magazines are picking out cover models. This isn’t an excuse for their paltry lineups of female artists; it’s just to say that there are other pressures guiding tastemakers toward men and guiding women to give up rock stardom.

Bands made up of all women are rare not because of a lack of talent, dedication or interest, but because women have been siphoned out of the pipeline at nearly every step of the way.

Getting The Band Together

For young boys, forming a crappy band is as elemental a part of growing up as playing baseball, or quitting the baseball team to spend more time smoking pot. If you’ve ever known a handful of teenage boys, you probably know at least one who’s been in a jam band inspired by Phish, or a dude rock band inspired by Dave Matthews, or an indie rock band inspired by Weezer. Guys in bands stand to benefit from male bonding, creative self-expression, and cultivating a rock god image to attract romantic interests. As Alex Pall of The Chainsmokers told Billboard in 2016, “Even before success, pussy was number one … I wanted to hook up with hotter girls.”

The flip side, however, is that this gendered adolescent experience rarely includes a space for girls to be anything but doting audiences and, at worst, “pussy.”

To me that was just kind of a given, guys were always starting bands and playing guitar in their bedrooms,” Allison Wolfe, the former lead singer of riot grrrl band Bratmobile and, most recently, Sex Stains, told me. She grew up in Olympia, home of artsy, crunchy Evergreen State College in Washington State, in the midst of the burgeoning ‘90s DIY punk scene. “I went to a lot of punk shows and saw guys playing. Olympia and Eugene were cool, not super macho like a lot of other places, but it still made me feel like I couldn’t really be a part of it.”

Suzie Zeldin, of the indie band The Narrative, spent her teenage years attending hardcore shows across the country, in Long Island, New York, that were packed with both male and female fans ― but vanishingly few female artists. “It was pretty rare actually to see a girl onstage,” she recalled.

And this was in the late ‘80s to early aughts. Decades ago, when rock ’n’ roll was really taking off, the scene was almost entirely male. “You go back to the ‘60s, and you’re talking about the dark ages of women in music, because the light that you’re putting out, there’s nothing to reflect it back,” said June Millington, co-founder and lead guitarist of the pioneering 1970s band Fanny. “You had to have the courage to walk into that cave that was completely dark.”

Her bandmate, drummer Alice DeBuhr, was blunt: “We didn’t think of ourselves as the beginning of or part of a tradition of women musicians. Because there weren’t any.”

As with any boys’ club, some determined and talented women have always fought their way in. But bands aren’t just about individual moxie. Forming a band requires collaboration. As a teenage bassist in Australia, music writer Anwen Crawford, author of a New Yorker article titled “The World Needs Female Rock Critics,” wanted that classic, adolescent band experience. The only problem? “I could never find other girls to play with, in those crucial years when you’re forming bands,” she told me. “Your teacher is likely to be male, your peers are likely to be male. It’s quite isolating.”

Just playing with her male peers wasn’t a solution either, she pointed out: “The boys around me didn’t really take me seriously, or thought I was a novelty.”

For many years, and even, to some extent, today, women who did seriously pursue rock music were less likely to find a thriving community of female peers to play with. Female stars like P.J. Harvey, Joan Jett and Stevie Nicks, Crawford noted, typically ended up as solo artists or the sole women in mostly male bands. After Goldie and the Gingerbreads disbanded in 1967, Ravan joined a mostly-male band and later built a solo career.

The creeping, pervasive assumption that little boys learn drums and grow up to be rock stars while little girls play Barbies and grow up to be groupies can isolate and stifle young girls who do pursue music, or it can simply delay their start. Many talented female musicians don’t begin their careers until early adulthood, at the age when young people are exploring who they really are outside of their rigidly defined peer groups. By then, many of their male peers have been mucking around with their instruments and amateur bands for a decade ― but that gap isn’t an insurmountable obstacle.

Augusta Koch, the guitarist and vocalist of the pop-punk band Cayetana, readily admits that she “didn’t know how to play guitar” when Cayetana was born five years ago. Koch and her bandmates were all out of college and dreaming of starting a band when they met at a party in Philadelphia. They decided to join forces and polished their skills together, through years of intense solo and band practice.

Mindy Abovitz, drummer and founder of Tom Tom Magazine, started her first band in college, not long after she’d surreptitiously begun to learn drums. It would have made zero sense to be in a band with a guy at that time, because all my guy friends who were musicians had been in bands since they were 12,” she told me.

“I played music in school band, clarinet and bass clarinet, but it wasn’t until much later that I thought I could do something like be in a band,” recalled Bratmobile’s Wolfe. “But I think I was very lucky to grow up in Olympia.” In the midst of a music scene that prided itself on counter-culturalism and anti-professionalism,anyone could do anything, and it would be considered music,” she said.

Wolfe went to Eugene to attend the University of Oregon, but many weekends she’d return to Olympia with her friend and future bandmate, Molly Neuman, to hang around the music scene. They met Kathleen Hanna, then a student at Evergreen. Wolfe began to notice that women around her were forming their own bands ― and not cute, smiley bands. One day, the summer before college, she peeked into Hanna’s art gallery, Reko Muse, and saw a band rehearsal in progress. “There was Kathleen, onstage,” recalled Wolfe, “and she was just yelling at the top of her lungs, with her veins popping out of her neck, and her face was all red … It was really confrontational, and intense.” Hanna’s band, Bikini Kill, ended up becoming early supporters of Wolfe and Neuman’s nascent group.

Wolfe and Neuman wanted to be involved in the scene ― they were already referring to themselves as a band around Olympia ― but they didn’t actually begin writing and performing music until a friend asked them to play a show he was booking. Despite Bratmobile’s slapdash beginnings, their first show was a rousing success.

“I don’t think it would have happened outside the Olympia scene, because I don’t think we would have had the encouragement,” she admitted. “People would have laughed us off the stage. But instead we had Bikini Kill there cheering us on.”

Keeping The Band Together

Getting an all-girl band together is a magical achievement, but it’s only step one. Rock bands are notoriously fragile things. Internal power struggles, ego trips and artistic disagreements tear many of them apart. For women, though, the stress of fending off inappropriate behavior, condescension and disdain rooted in their gender often ends up compounding the ordinary struggles faced by every band.

Having overcome years of overt or implicit discouragement to choose a musical career, female musicians face exhausting assumptions: That they don’t understand their own gear or craft; that, if they came later to mastering the art form, they are perpetual amateurs; that they’re just hanging around the scene to get male attention. Cayetana’s drummer, Kelly Olsen, pointed out that “women getting into relationships with musicians… get looked at in a very different way than men that do. And I know that we have been judged by who we date, like, you’re just doing that to get close to this band. And it’s like, actually, no! I have my own self and my own power in my own scene.”

The assumption, however, generally remains that women don’t belong onstage unless they’re accompanied and overseen by men. Lydia Night, the teenage frontwoman of The Regrettes, caught the rock fever early ― she’s been playing guitar since the age of six and has not only attended years of music classes but performed in several bands. Nonetheless, she’s noticed, sound technicians often assume she can’t handle her own equipment. The sexism is difficult to ignore thanks to one simple fact: The band has one male member, drummer Maxx Morando. “We’ve met so many amazing sound people,” she told me, “but we’ve met so many annoying sound people who just assume that … oh, of course Maxx knows how to set up his drums, but she must not know how to set up her amp.”

Though many of the women I spoke to said that they felt respected and appreciated by their male peers in the industry, the spaces men make for themselves aren’t always welcoming. Women might be left out of bands and tours by men who want to keep the fratty vibe, or who don’t want their significant others to worry about infidelity. “Tour buses are definitely places where women get excluded,” Abovitz said, referencing a situation she’d recently advised another female musician about. “They don’t get hired. They just get left off.” Her acquaintance and the other woman in her band weren’t invited on a bus due to this reasoning; in the end, they had to drive themselves separately for the entire tour.

When it’s not the men directly involved in the industry, it’s the press. Music journalism, a field that was carved out and is still largely populated by white men, has historically been hostile at worst, and patronizing at best, to female artists. “The assumption [was] that interviewers and other people could treat us with condescension and that was the norm,” says Millington. “That condescension was pretty lethal, because it can come at you in so many different ways, even the subtle ways cut ― at least 50 percent, 60 percent or more of the time, the condescension had to be there even if [critics] said they liked us.”

Critics and journalists might cover a girl band with a tone of surprise that a group of women could even play competently, or fixate on the band members’ sex appeal and gendered characteristics.

Plus, female artists were played off each other, creating the impression that in the massive rock universe, there was only room for one woman star. “It was never about the music,” Raven remembered of her early reviews. “They always had to compare me with somebody.” Usually, the times being what they were, that somebody was Janis Joplin. In 1969, legendary rock critic Robert Christgau described her as “this group’s resident Janis Joplin” in a review of Ten Wheel Drive, a jazz-rock band she joined after Goldie and the Gingerbreads broke up. Joplin comes up yet again in his review of one of her solo albums, “Urban Desire,” in addition to the accusation that “she oversings.” (Christgau’s oeuvre is a trove of chauvinistic criticism, which is rarely subtle; he takes pains to graciously judge that Fanny’s “execution is competent enough.”)

In the early days of rock ’n’ roll, even audiences who presumably showed up to enjoy these shows were sexist by default. Millington and DeBuhr both vividly recalled one particular compliment from male listeners that seemed to dog Fanny throughout its run: “Not bad for chicks!”

No matter where they performed, “that was the best compliment we could get through the early ‘70s. Isn’t that incredible?” Millington told me. “And we almost always smiled and said ‘Thank you.’” Worse, Fanny often confronted the assumption that they couldn’t play their own songs. “I can’t remember how many times people asked us, ‘Who were the male musicians playing on the album?’” DeBuhr remembered. To a group of women who practiced and performed tirelessly and who took pride in their music, this question was particularly galling.

In the punk era, disdainful audiences could be more aggressive. Wolfe half-seriously insisted that her nearsightedness and poor hearing protected her ego from the vitriol of sexist crowds. “A lot of the time I was saved by the fact that I couldn’t see or hear what was going on in the audience,” she said. After Bratmobile’s second show, Kathleen Hanna met them offstage and asked if they were OK. Unbeknownst to them, some “scary metalhead dudes” in the crowd had been hollering death threats at the band throughout their set.

Harder to ignore: An incident at a show during Wolfe’s time in the late-’90s band Cold Cold Hearts, when a man grabbed her ass while she performed. “I actually started laughing, because it was just too shocking,” she said.

Some women involved with the music world saw a relatively egalitarian, non-threatening environment, at least in specific scenes. Punk historian Gillian McCain, co-author of the oral history Please Kill Me, pushed back on the idea that the early punk scene could be sexually exploitative. “The girls were enjoying their sexual freedom as much as the boys were,” she wrote in an email. “None of the women we interviewed saw themselves as victims.”

But there’s no denying that some women in the music industry have been victimized, and that the experience can directly affect their careers. Pop star and songwriter Kesha, the most infamous recent example, follows in a long line of women whose voices were snuffed out thanks to male exploitation. Due to her ironclad contract and current legal battle with her former producer, Dr. Luke, whom she has accused of sexual and other abuse, Kesha is reported to be sitting on at least 22 new songs she’s not allowed to bring out.

In 2015, the original bassist of The Runaways, Jackie Fuchs, accused the band’s late manager, Kim Fowley, of raping her soon after she joined the band in 1975. She quit in 1977. In a HuffPost Highline feature, Jason Cherkis documented multiple alleged victims of Fowley’s sexual violence, primarily Fuchs and Kari Krome, a precocious songwriter Fowley began grooming at just 13 years old. By the time Cherkis spoke to Krome, some 40 years later, she had been out of the music business since her teen years, instead writing boxes full of unpublished lyrics. “[S]he couldn’t shake the idea that Fowley never believed in her talent, that he only wanted to sleep with her,” he wrote. “She ended up abandoning her dreams of becoming a successful songwriter.”

Though it’s impossible to say how many women’s careers have been stunted or destroyed by sexual predation, even those who remain and succeed continue to face gendered criticism and abuse. With few other options, women musicians often embrace determinedly nonchalant attitudes toward their harassers and critics. “It’s hard to play a show when someone screams ‘you can’t play guitar’ or ‘you’re hot,’ but at the same time,” said Koch, “we try to not let it ruin us.”

During the riot grrrl movement of the ‘90s, women on the scene tried to find safety in solidarity. After the butt-grabbing incident at her Cold Cold Hearts show, Wolfe remembered, “The amazing thing is I didn’t have to do anything. It was a girl power show; all the women bounced him out in two seconds.” By urging “girls to the front” and forefronting feminism, riot grrrl created a safer space for women in rock ― at least temporarily.  In other times, in other cases, playing through the pain simply led to burnout. “I left Fanny in ‘73, because I was just tired,” Millington told me.

When women aren’t kept out of rock genres through sheer discouragement, exclusion or harassment, the malleable nature of the genre can also be used against them. Women artists may be edited out of the rock annals simply through gendered perceptions ― what men play is rock and what women play is pop. Nowhere is this more evidently the case than with black women, who, like black men, often find themselves reflexively categorized as R&B simply because of their race. As Rolling Stone’s Brittany Spanos wrote in 2016, the white appropriation of rock has been so total that it “box[es] black performers into R&B and soul categories no matter how genre-bending they are.”

“Though largely forgotten in our whitewashed annals of history,” LaTonya Pennington wrote in The Establishment, “black women helped create the genre of rock, which has its roots in blues, country, jazz, gospel and R&B.” Just as many pioneers of rock were black men ― Chuck Berry, Fats Domino, Little Richard and Bo Diddley ― many of the early female pioneers, like “Godmother of Rock ’n’ Roll” Sister Rosetta Tharpe, were black. White women were also often complicit in undercutting black women performers. The first recording of “Piece of My Heart” was performed by Erma Franklin ― known as an R&B singer ― yet it was white singer Janis Joplin ― known as a rocker ― whose rendition rose to fame.

The contributions of black women have been routinely swept under the rug and written out of rock history. But Pennington, Spanos and other critics have seen black women reclaiming their place in the rock genre in recent years, from undeniably rock acts such as The Alabama Shakes (fronted by vocalist and guitarist Brittany Howard) to indie darling Santigold to, yes, Beyoncé.

In “Lemonade,” the pop icon dabbled in country and rock ’n’ roll to great effect. “Beyoncé… provided one of the year’s most memorable rock moments with ‘[Don’t] Hurt Yourself,’” Crawford argued. “Here we have a song by a black woman artist (Beyoncé), who has not typically been ‘seen’ as a rock musician, which appropriates white rock masculinity in order to emphasize that the origins of rock music (in the blues) lie with black women, whose music was, in turn, appropriated by white men.” The all-important visuals work fluidly with the song to reinforce this message, she added. “The film clip … which begins and ends with a young black woman sitting behind a drum kit, makes literally visible this lineage of largely disregarded and historically invisible black female musicianship.”

Passing The Torch

With all the obstacles and forms of discouragement women in rock have faced over the decades, rock is no longer the coolest nor freshest genre. Does it even matter how inclusive it is to women anymore? Crawford, though she qualifies that it’s important for women to have equal opportunity in any genre, suggests women look elsewhere. The masculinization of the scene has been so entrenched, and the genre itself seems so archaic, that she “wouldn’t necessarily advise [a young woman today] to pick up a guitar. I think of rock music like the realist novel ― it’s fun, people are still doing it, but why?” And though “other genres have their own problems,” she pointed out, there’s a less lengthy and calcified history of exclusion to undo. Women have been making huge amounts of exciting, boundary-pushing music in electronic music, in pop and beyond ― rock just hasn’t been as welcoming.

Conversely, McCain downplayed the severity of the obstacles faced by women in punk rock ― though the punk scene was predominantly male. “Unfortunately that’s the case in a lot of vocations,” she wrote in an email. “I think there were barriers to both men and women making it in punk music! […] In some ways the women may have held an advantage as far as getting more media attention.” McCain cited breakout female stars of the era, from Patti Smith to Tina Weymouth, who remain popular today. As Ravan realized in the 1960s, being a woman in a man’s world could be a great marketing tool.

Still, staking a visible claim to rock music isn’t just an ego trip for marginalized artists: It clears the path to stardom for those that follow. Not only does it make it easier for audiences and critics to conceptualize, for example, black and female artists as rockers, but it helps future musicians to avoid the derision, harassment and sense of alienation that has afflicted many.

Even today, women deal with gendered belittlement and abuse on tour. But audiences have seen enough female rock musicians to mitigate the level of scorn faced by individual artists. Where Fanny and Goldie and the Gingerbreads often felt like their gender was so unusual that it was simply treated as a gimmick ― the only reason people bothered to book them as opposed to the many male bands ― women who are currently early in their music careers see a more diverse scene. Night told me that The Regrettes perform alongside “a lot of women … super badass women.”

Zeldin has also toured with a number of bands with one or more woman. “There are a lot of bands that have at least some female presence. It’s nice to see that happening more and more,” she said.

Part of the more welcoming environment for women and gender non-binary individuals in rock has to do with changing norms, like a better understanding of the harm caused by sexual assault. Recalling her time in Fanny in the ‘70s, DeBuhr describes a scene that was not only permissive of male urges, but that lacked a language to talk about it critically. Though sometimes she felt deeply uncomfortable with the sexualized atmosphere, she told me, “At the time, I don’t think we called it sexual harassment … It was creepy, I didn’t like it.” Creepy behavior might still be fairly common in the music industry, but women musicians do have the vocabulary to talk about it. Take music publicist Heathcliff Berru, once a power player in the field. He fell precipitously from grace after a raft of female musicians and industry professionals ― most notably Amber Coffman of Dirty Projectors ― publicly accused him of various forms of sexual misconduct.

Even the idea that women can be rebels and artists as well as homemakers, mothers and playthings needed to emerge over the past few decades. Not only were the first all-girl bands were presented as gimmicks, they were often presented as sexualized ones. Fowley notoriously positioned The Runaways as a clique of sexy jailbait rather than serious musicians ― and that’s a temporary brand at best.

During high school, in 1960s Iowa, DeBuhr played in a girl band called Women. (“We were a gimmick,” explained. “That was the attraction, it was all girls.”) While at an Iowan club, teenage DeBuhr saw a female drummer in a jazz trio. The drummer was older, “maybe 40,” she recalled. “I said, ‘I will quit when I‘m 30. I won’t be an old lady playing the drums.” She did end up hanging up her drumsticks not long after Fanny broke up. Now, she says, she regrets it.

To a young DeBuhr, that solitary, middle-aged woman drummer may have seemed like an oddity at the time; the lack of visible female rock icons inevitably perpetuates the assumption that women don’t belong onstage, unless they’re go-go dancers or sultry vocalists. Even serious bands like Fanny and the Gingerbreads faced pressure to go onstage scantily clad ― which they resisted to varying degrees.

Perhaps the most important evolution has been the determined, serious incursion of women into the genre, a genre that at first seemed to have no place for them. Though Ravan and Millington cite a few forerunners as inspirations ― Etta James, Lillian Briggs ― they saw their own music as something different. They were playing rock ’n’ roll in bands, just like the boys.

Today, budding musicians have a pantheon of women rockstars to draw inspiration from and emulate. “When I was five, my dad took me to a Donnas concert … and I just fell in love with it,” Night told me. “The turning point for me ― I think I was 10 ― my mom took me to see a movie about the drummer of Hole. I started listening to a lot of Hole, Bikini Kill, Babes in Toyland.”

A push for mostly all-women bands may be unlikely today because, in a more inclusive scene, female musicians see less of a need to huddle together. When Night initially fell in love with The Donnas, she longed to start an all-girl band; now, she says, she doesn’t even think about gender when forming a band. Zeldin, who has always worked with male musicians, felt the same. “I’d totally be down to do a girl band,” she told me. But she wouldn’t be motivated to do sojust because it would be all girls.”

The success of “girl rock” can come in waves. For groups like Fanny and Bratmobile, being all women was part of the point; at those times, it felt like both safety in solidarity and a way of making political statement. “If the whole point was giving voice to girls, then yeah, we wanted to play with other girls,” said Wolfe. After the overtly feminist, but flawed, riot grrrl scene faded, punk and indie rock seemed to contract around men again.

“I feel like riot grrrl ended in the mid-’90s, and by the late-‘90s there was a lot of backlash,” said Wolfe. “Suddenly there were a lot fewer girl bands in the punk scene, and it was like, what happened?” The backlash to riot grrrl, which she concedes had its own problems, still felt “like sexism. Or just dissing feminism.”

Though juggernaut all-women bands like Sleater-Kinney arose from and survived riot grrrl, they were more the exception than the rule. By the early aughts, critics were commenting on the almost startling sexism of the ascendant emo and punk scene. Andy Greenwald’s Nothing Feels Good: Punk Rock, Teenagers, and Emo noted the dearth of women on popular emo labels, as well as the overtly resentful and objectifying view emo artists took of women: “Now emo songwriters were one-sided victims of heartbreak, utterly wronged and ready to sing about it, with the women having no chance to respond.”

In an essay on emo misogyny from her 2015 book The First Collection of Criticism by a Living Female Rock Critic, titled “Where the Girls Aren’t,” music journalist and critic Jessica Hopper remembered growing up in the era of riot grrrl. “For me, even as a teenage autodidact who thought her every idea was worthy of expression and an audience,” she wrote, “it did not occur to me to start a band until I saw other women in one.” Watching female fans at emo shows where all-male artists sang about cardboard-cutout women who had hurt them, she thought, “I don’t want these front row girls to miss that. I don’t want girls leaving clubs denied of encouragement and potential.”

The clock couldn’t simply be turned back to the 1950s after the riot grrrl era ended, though. Bikini Kill records were still out there. We knew about the Bangles. Zeldin, who grew up frequenting the emo and hardcore scene, took the rarity of women onstage at those shows as a challenge. “I think that’s probably partially what drove me to do it, aside from having the inclination,” she told me. “It was more like ― I don’t see girls doing so let’s do it.”

Abovitz, who launched a whole publication to cover female drummers, believes fervently in the power of modeling. “There’s this sort of thing that every female drummer I know does: Go out and play a show not just for herself, but for every other female drummer,” she said. “You just want to do it, so that people will get over it already.”

The scene already looks less homogenous than it did 10 years ago, despite the daunting machismo of the aughts. Earlier generations of women musicians have sought to further their gains by promoting their own legacies, and even by educating new generations. Millington started the Institute for the Musical Arts (IMA) with her partner, Ann F. Hackler, in 1986. The institute runs rock camps for young girls, among other initiatives to support women in music. Camps like the IMA’s have begun to bear fruit ― like Night’s The Regrettes, formed by three girls and a boy who met in an LA School of Rock.

Though the genre has put up walls against women for decades, women have refused to stay out ― and the more they refuse, the more open the music industry becomes to all women.

You gotta keep writing songs that speak out about this stuff, or keep being in bands, or whatever it is that you do,” said Wolfe. “Being there, inserting yourself in a space that isn’t common for women to be.”

Rock ’N’ Roll Legend Chuck Berry Dead At 90

Rock ’n’ roll pioneer Chuck Berry has died, Missouri police said Saturday. He was 90.

“The St. Charles County Police Department sadly confirms the death of Charles Edward Anderson Berry Sr., better known as legendary musician Chuck Berry,” police said in a statement posted to Facebook.

First responders were called out to a home on Buckner Road around 12:40 p.m. and found a man later identified as Berry unresponsive “and immediately administered lifesaving techniques,” the statement reads. They were unable to revive him and he was pronounced dead at 1:26 p.m.

Berry penned a great number of hits in the 1950s and 1960s like “Sweet Little Sixteen,” “Roll Over Beethoven” and “Rock and Roll Music” that influenced generations of rock groups, including The Beatles. Merging a captivating stage presence with his own blend of blues, country and jazz, Berry helped define the fledgling rock’n’ roll genre, later becoming one of the first musicians inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio.

Born into a middle-class family in St. Louis, Missouri, Berry picked up the basics of guitar from a neighbor and started performing music as a teenager. In 1952, he formed a trio with Johnnie Johnson on piano and Ebby Harding on drums that rose to fame in the local nightclub scene. To pay the bills, Berry worked as a hairdresser. But soon enough he wouldn’t have time for that ― a trip to Chicago netted a recording session with Chess Records, during which Berry performed an old hillbilly tune called “Ida Red.” Changing the name to “Maybellene,” Chess sent the track to an influential New York DJ, and it became a hit among the teenage set.

According to an oft-cited line by John Lennon, “If you tried to give rock ‘n’ roll another name, you might call it ‘Chuck Berry.’” Berry’s music became so well-known, he toured the country with only a guitar, trusting he’d be able to find musicians in each city he played who could serve as his back-up. Many of his lyrics focused on teen culture, although he was significantly past that age by the time he started traveling around singing about cars and dates.

Chuck Berry’s signature “duck walk.”

But in the nascent era of the Civil Rights Movement, Berry’s status as a black man with a following of young white people ― a lot of them girls ― caused certain conflict. He’d been known to take refuge in police stations to dodge protesters after his shows, which sometimes featured police presence themselves, according to an Esquire profile. After a teenage coat-check girl who worked briefly at a club he owned alleged Berry had an affair with her, the guitarist served two years in prison. A tax evasion charge sent him to prison again, briefly, in 1979. Then, in 1990, a police raid on a recording compound he owned turned up a stash of marijuana and images of Berry with nude women ― including one underage ― but charges were later dropped.

Notoriously interview-shy, Berry had been living out his later years in Ladue, Missouri ― near his hometown. He never stopped writing music, and performed regular gigs at a local restaurant and club called Blueberry Hill.

Fans, Music Greats Mourn Loss Of Mr. Rock ‘N’ Roll Chuck Berry

Fans and musicians around the globe mourned the death of Rock ‘n’ Roll’s wild founding father Chuck Berry at the age of 90.

Instead of a wish for Berry to rest in peace, the estate of famed guitarist Bo Diddley tweeted a message to the music legend to “rock in power.” The estate of John Lennon — whose own music was inspired by the rhythm pioneer — posted a quote from the late Beatle hailing Berry as “another name” for rock ‘n’ roll.

Berry’s rock anthems like “Johnny B.Goode,” “Roll Over Beethoven” and “Maybelline” set the stage for future generations of fans and countless budding musicians pinning their hopes on playing the guitar like Berry could.

Rocker Huey Lewis honored Berry as “maybe the most important figure in all of rock and roll. His music and his influence will last forever.”

Keith Urban thanked Berry for his “poetry, passion and potency.”

The Jacksons tweeted: “Chuck Berry merged blues & swing into the phenomenon of early rock ‘n’ roll. In music, he cast one of the longest shadows. Thank You, Chuck.”

Writer Stephen King said Berry’s death “breaks my heart.”

The Rolling Stones have said they are “deeply saddened” by the death of Chuck Berry, describing him as a “true pioneer of rock ‘n’ roll and a massive influence on us.”

Clarification: This article has been updated to reflect that Diddley’s Twitter account is not the guitarist himself (he died in 2008), but that of his estate.

Prince Harry Really Knows How To Rock A Casual Look

Like a fine wine, it appears Prince Harry just keeps getting better (and better dressed) with age.

Harry attended a mental health conference in London Thursday dressed sharply in a gray jacket, white button-front shirt and blue pants. It’s not necessarily a bold or fresh new look, but he definitely wears it well.

Just look at the fit on this thing.

Harry met with former armed services members and one particularly adorable assistance dog, who made us realize for the first time ever that Harry is basically a human golden retriever: handsome, eager and slightly red-headed.

We’re not implying that girlfriend Meghan Markle dressed him for the occasion, but she does star on a show called “Suits.” Just saying.

Brad Pitt Is A Rock Star General In Absurdist ‘War Machine’ Trailer

The last time Brad Pitt pulled off an absurdist satire he played a water-bottle chugging gym rat with a mean pompadour haircut in “Burn After Reading,” so consider us excited for his second time at bat.

The trailer for Netflix’s “War Machine,” which reportedly cost a cool $ 60 million to produce, debuted online Wednesday, and it looks like the streaming service has yet another hit on its hands.

Inspired by the late journalist Michael Hastings’ book The Operators: The Wild & Terrifying Inside Story of America’s War in Afghanistan, “War Machine” takes aim at the ridiculousness of combat abroad. Starring Pitt as rock star U.S. General General Glenn McMahon, the film chronicles his rise and fall after a magazine exposes some of the less than savory practices of the American military. Pitt also gets to utter genius lines like, “Finish your phone call. The war can wait,” so it looks like it’ll be worth our time.

The film also stars Tilda Swinton, Sir Ben Kingsley, Anthony Michael Hall and Topher Grace.

Watch the trailer below.

“War Machine” premieres on Netflix May 26.

This Stupid Rock Costs $85 At Nordstrom. Seriously.

In the latest sign that the rich should be eaten and the end is nigh, Nordstrom has apparently started selling a totally regular-looking rock for $ 85.

Yes, in what is apparently not a joke but in fact real life, the department store is selling a rock in a little pouch for an amount that is frankly insulting to humans who spend their money on things like rent or food or, well, anything besides $ 85 rocks.

Surely by now you must be wondering whether this is the sort of fake news that has infiltrated the internet and clouded our collective judgment. But no, it is not. This is the reality we live in now. And in the blurb attached to what is just, really, a rock, the creator of said rock doesn’t even pretend that there’s some specific purpose for it. Because again, it’s just a rock:

A paperweight? A conversation piece? A work of art? It’s up to you, but this smooth Los Angeles-area stone—wrapped in rich, vegetable-tanned American leather secured by sturdy contrast whipstitching—is sure to draw attention wherever it rests. A traditional hardening process gives the leather a beautiful ombré effect. Like all Made Solid leather pieces, this one is cut, shaped, sewn and finished by hand in artist Peter Maxwell’s Los Angeles studio. Using vintage leatherworking tools and traditional saddle-stitching techniques, Maxwell aims to create beautiful designs that embody both simplicity and functionality, and that develop rich character and patina over time.

Made Solid, the “creator” of this “product,” states that most of the rocks are around 3 inches by 4.5 inches by 2 inches, but makes clear that “Each piece is unique and will vary slightly,” which makes sense. Because they are rocks.

Not able to afford an $ 85 rock? The wallet feeling a little light because of student debt, rent and food? Hey, don’t worry, because there’s another rock you can buy for just sixty five dollars

When historians look back on the year 2016, the year when the first real cracks in democratic capitalism began to show, will they mention the rock? Will they see it as a sign of a people searching for meaning in all the wrong places? Of a society that spread its collective wealth incorrectly? Or will they simply look the other way, face to the wind, as they shout into the ethers, “WHAT HAPPENED? HOW COULD THE GREATEST NATION IN THE HISTORY OF THE WORLD SO QUICKLY CRUMBLE TO ITS KNEES?”

We don’t know yet. But for now, at least the shipping on this rock is free. And that’s pretty sick.

Chris Rock Announces World Standup Tour In The Most Chris Rock Way

Chris Rock, already $ 40 million richer for a pair of upcoming Netflix specials, is about to collect even more coin on the road.

Rock announced his first stand-up tour in nearly a decade in a message posted to Facebook on Monday, and it proved way better than a traditional press release. The new tour, “Total Blackout,” will start in 2017 ― and yes, Rock knows it’s been a while.

“First time in nine years, OK?” he says in the video, recorded at the Comedy Store in Los Angeles. “Haven’t done it in a while. Been a little busy, you know, writing ‘Pootie Tang 3’ and everything.”

“But hey, it’s time,” he says.

According to TicketMaster, the American leg kicks off in Durham, North Carolina, on Feb. 14. Other stops include Denver, Minneapolis and New Orleans.

“I can’t wait to see you bitches!” Rock says. See the whole announcement below.

Chris Rock Joins Dave Chappelle to Watch Election Results with Shocked Clinton Supporters on SNL

The election results didn’t go the way of Hillary Clinton supporters on Tuesday, but not everyone was so shocked.

Saturday Night Live poked fun at overly confident Democrats with an Election Night skit that saw host Dave Chappelle and surprise guest Chris Rock caution their white liberal pals against celebrating too early.

As they group revels in the thought of electing the first female president, Chapelle remains skeptical. “Yep, it might be a historic night, but don’t forget it’s a big country,” his character says.

As the night wears on and the results are announced, most of the group is shocked as Donald Trump pulls ahead.

Aidy Bryant asks, “Why aren’t people turning out for Hillary the way they did for Barack Obama?”

“I mean, maybe because you’re replacing a charismatic 40-year-old black guy with a 70-year-old white woman,” Rock explains. “That’s like the Knicks replacing Patrick Ewing with Neil Patrick Harris.”

After Alaska was called for Trump, Cecily Strong came to the realization that America may be racist. However, Chappelle’s character was less than taken aback.

“Oh, my God,” he said. “I remember my great-grandfather told me something like that. He was like a slave or something, I don’t know.”

After the announcement that Trump was voted president-elect came, the guys quipped that it was indeed a historic night.

“Don’t worry, eight years are gonna fly by,” said Chappelle.

“Get some rest,” said Rock. “You got a big day of moping and writing on Facebook tomorrow.”

Saturday Night Live airs Saturdays (11:30 p.m. ET) on NBC.

‘Rock On’: Women, Ageing and Popular Music

‘Rock On’: Women, Ageing and Popular Music

For female pop stars, whose star bodies and star performances are undisputedly the objects of a sexualized external gaze, the process of ageing in public poses particular challenges. Taking a broadly feminist perspective, ‘Rock On’: women, ageing and popular music shifts popular music studies in a new direction. Focussing on British, American and Latina women performers and ageing, the collection investigates the cultural work performed by artists such as Shirley Bassey, Petula Clark, Madonna, Celia Cruz, Grace Jones and Courtney Love.

The study crosses generations of performers and audiences enabling an examination of changing socio-historical contexts and an exploration of the relationships at play between performance strategies, star persona and the popular music press. For instance, the strategies employed by Madonna and Grace Jones to engage with the processes and issues related to public ageing are not the same as those employed by Courtney Love or Celia Cruz. The essays in this insightful collection reflect on the ways that artists and fans destabilise both the linear trajectories and the compelling weight of expectations regarding ageing by employing different modalities of resistance through persona re-invention, nostalgia, postmodern intertextuality and even early death as the ultimate denial of age.

1. What are your color analysis results and does gray hair color align to these results?
2. Are you okay with hair color maintenance?
3. Are you ready to truly embrace the grays?

Some people start going gray as early as their teenage years. I believe there are so many negative myths that need to be busted about having natural gray hair. In my opinion, it really is just another hair color option available to many of us at some point in our lives (some earlier than others).

I hope this blog post inspires you to wear your authenticity!

Eleven Bass Players Who Belong in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

2015-10-08-1444318592-9253506-TomSemioliWhiteBass.jpg

We serve the singer, the song, the soloist, and ultimately the listener. Though we do not possess the harmonic nor sonic range of a guitar, keyboards, voice, horns, wind instruments, nor the dynamics of drums and percussion-the bass player determines how a musical chord actually sounds – which, in essence -often determines whether or not you’ll like the track. Do the math!

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame nominees have been announced and I congratulate all the artists: The Cars, Chic, Chicago, Cheap Trick, Deep Purple, Janet Jackson, The J.B.’s, Chaka Khan, Los Lobos, Steve Miller, Nine Inch Nails, N.W.A., The Smiths, The Spinners, and Yes.

Since the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation began in 1983 there has been much controversy over who belongs and who does not. It’s no different than sports Halls of Fame. Controversy, dispute, and rock ‘n’ roll are siblings, and I accept that. However I must stand up for my woefully neglected bass brethren, some of whom no longer lay down the groove on this mortal coil.

As such, history reveals that when iconic Rock and Roll Hall of Famers fired their signature bass players, their commercial and artistic fortunes waned considerably: Elton John, Elvis Costello, Bruce Springsteen – who recovered when he re-hired the E Street Band, Billy Joel, Eric Clapton, and Alice Cooper – who dumped his entire original band; among others, were never the same sans their formative four string bandmates.

Obviously there are more than eleven bass players who deserve recognition in the Hall. Based on conversations with my fellow players, musicians, engineers, producers, writers, and vinyl loving devotees, herein are eleven from the classic rock era who must be cited, especially given the fact that they appear on several Rock and Roll Hall of Fame artists’ most important recordings.

This list, in the tradition of Spinal Tap, goes to 11!

Dee Murray: To atone for producer Gus Dudgeon’s curious refusal to utilize his extraordinary road band in the studio until 1972, Elton John released 11-17-70 which is among the essential live albums of any era in rock. Bassist Dee Murray and drummer Nigel Olsson, who, along with guitarist Davey Johnstone, also created the vocal harmonies to Elton’s early classics, distinguished themselves as an elite rhythm section. The original Elton John Band’s absence from the Hall of Fame is inexcusable.

Carl Radle: From the late 1960s until his untimely passing in 1980, bassist Carl Radle’s jaw-dropping resume includes enduring releases by Hall of Famers Eric Clapton, George Harrison, Dr. John, Leon Russell, Buddy Guy, Art Garfunkel, Donovan, and Bob Dylan. Carl’s work on Layla & Other Assorted Love Songs is irreplaceable: every bassist in Slowhand’s subsequent ensembles renders Radle’s lines from that album nearly note-for-note – that’s how extraordinary Carl was!

Kenny Aaronson: Cited as Bassist of the Year in 1988 by Rolling Stone, Kenny is among rock’s most versatile and resourceful players. His career spans scores of seminal sides and concert performances, including Hall of Famers Ronnie Spector, Bob Dylan, Sammy Hagar, Joan Jett, Daryl Hall & John Oates, and one artist whose omission from the Hall is sacrilege: Rick Derringer.

Harvey Brooks: Session bassist and producer Harvey Brooks was the go-to player on the New York studio scene in the 1960s. As the electric bass was essentially in its infancy, Brooks brought his deep understanding of blues, pop, soul, folk, and jazz to the instrument, appearing on such influential albums by Hall of Famers Bob Dylan (Highway 61 Revisited) Miles Davis (Bitches Brew -with Dave Holland), the Doors (Soft Parade), and Al Kooper’s Super Sessions with Mike Bloomfield, to name a few.

John Dalton and Jim Rodford: Behold the missing Kinks! Of the bassists who served Muswell Hill’s favorite sons following the departure of founding member Peter Quaife, John Dalton is likely the one player whom American rock fans heard the most on FM radio by way of “Lola,” “Victoria,” “20th Century Man,” “Celluloid Heroes,” and “Jukebox Music,” among many others from 1969 to 1976. Jim Rodford was a founding member of the progressive pop powerhouse Argent (1969-76) and the longest tenured (1978-96) and most musically adept bassist The Kinks ever employed.

Klaus Voorman: In addition to his brilliant performances on the Beatles’ extensive solo canon, Klaus was a first- call studio bassist for Hall of Famers B.B. King, Donovan, Jerry Lee Lewis, Lou Reed, Randy Newman, and Dion, among others. Voorman’s intro to Carly Simon’s “You’re So Vain,” a hit song about another Hall of Famer, is among the most recognizable motifs in the history of pop music.

Herbie Flowers: “Being a bass-player is like being a truck driver…you’re paid to arrive on time and safely at your destination!” His repetitive, major 10th interval glissando created rock’s greatest bassline for Hall of Famer Lou Reed’s “Walk on the Wild Side.” With a blue 1960 Fender Jazz which he purchased from Manny’s in New York City for $ 79.00, Herbie Flowers emerged as the quintessential session player in his native UK. His drop-tuning bass on David Essex’s “Rock On,” and riveting counterpoint beneath David Bowie’s “Space Oddity” remain watershed.

Lee Sklar: A session giant with album credits in the thousands, Lee was the foundation for “The Section” – a musical assemblage of Los Angeles based virtuosos who were the catalyst on scores of iconic album and singles sessions. Among the Hall of Famers Lee enhanced include: James Taylor, Ray Charles, Daryl Hall & John Oates, Donna Summer, Jackson Browne, Diana Ross, David Crosby, Graham Nash, and Michael Jackson, among others.

Doug Yule: For all the hipster hosannas heaped upon the Velvet Underground – and deservedly so, one essential member is oft overlooked – bassist Doug Yule, who joined the band upon John Cale’s dismissal in 1968. Unlike Cale, who was indifferent to the instrument, Yule was a fine bass player and singer who complimented Lou’s gravitation from the avant-garde towards the then burgeoning singer-songwriter movement. Though The Velvet Underground & Nico (1967) and White Light/White Heat (1968) were influential, groundbreaking efforts; to my ears Velvet Underground (1969) and Loaded (1970) both with Yule, are the VU’s most enduring works.

Will Lee: Assuming the mantle created by Doc Severinsen’s legendary NBC Orchestra as heard on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson – bandleader Paul Shaffer and bassist Will Lee’s groundbreaking tenure in the World’s Most Dangerous Band for David Letterman’s Late Night and Late Show brought the language of rock, blues, soul, folk, country, jazz fusion, and funk to the Great American Songbook.

You Can Help Pick This Year’s Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame Inductees

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame just announced this year’s nominees for induction into its ranks. The 15 nominees — including Janet Jackson, Nine Inch Nails, The Smiths and Chaka Khan — span many genres, styles and time periods, though to qualify, they have to have released their first album or single at least 25 years ago.

Here’s the full list of nominees, in alphabetical order:

  • Chicago
  • Cheap Trick
  • Deep Purple
  • The Cars
  • Chaka Khan
  • Chic
  • The J.B.’s
  • Janet Jackson
  • Los Lobos
  • Steve Miller
  • N.W.A.
  • Nine Inch Nails
  • The Smiths
  • The Spinners
  • Yes

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame — located in Cleveland, Ohio — doesn’t have a set number of slots open for induction each year, though a representative said that they usually aim to admit five performers, plus several more in other categories.

The final list of inductees will be determined by votes from more than 800 musical artists, professionals and historians from around the world; each will be able to select up to five of the nominees.

In addition, fans everywhere will be able to vote for inductees online — including right here:

The five artists that get the most votes from online fans will be added to a “fans ballot” that will be tallied along with the ballots from the Hall of Fame’s panel.

The names of the inductees will be revealed in December, and the actual induction will take place April 2016 in New York City.

Peter Rock Star from Galilee: A Guided Bible Study for Teens and Adults

Peter Rock Star from Galilee: A Guided Bible Study for Teens and Adults

If the New Testament were a Broadway musical, Peter would be one of the stars. He lived life loud, while making his best effort to be one great disciple. Peter was like a modern day rock star, but his struggles were just like ours. If Jesus could shape Peter into a solid rock of a disciple, he can surely do the same for you. From his first call to follow, Peter was acutely aware of his own sinfulness. He wanted Jesus to go away, but ended up following. What makes people push Jesus away today? What makes them decide to follow? These are the kinds of “chew on this” questions you’ll find in Week One of Peter: Rock Star from Galilee. Music always speaks to a deep place in the heart. With the playlists in each chapter, you can let the study themes sink in. The ups and downs of Peter’s life story will come alive as you listen to the music of Tenth Avenue North and other artists. To better understand the feelings Peter had after denying Jesus three times, listen to Josh Wilson’s “Before the Morning.” Feel the love Christ had for all people even on the cross by listening to “Amazing Love” by Chris Tomlin. By the end of the eight-week study, you will create your own playlist of at least eight songs to bring back all you learned about Peter. The digital edition includes links to helpful websites and scripture apps. All you need for an eight week study is included: interactive questions for personal study and “chew on this” questions for small group discussion; photographs, maps, and informative sidebars for historical and geographical context; hands-on mission activities and discipleship challenges.

Forever Young: Rock and Roll As the Antidote to Aging

2015-06-23-1435073354-1147303-guitarman.jpg

A few weeks ago I was visiting a friend in Los Angeles who had recently retired after a lifetime of working in the music industry. Before my visit I had spotted her in a documentary film about an iconic recording session in the 1980s with some of the top names in the business. When we met for coffee, I complemented her on how she hadn’t changed since then. After comparing notes on old friends, the decline of society and our current situations we agreed that rock music was still a vital element in our lives and how the music managed to transcend generations. And more importantly, it had the quality to keep us young.

A recent article in the Huffington Post illustrated how musical tastes become fixed by the time one reaches the end of their twenties. Which for a lot of the older public means that bands like Led Zeppelin and the Rolling Stones are the musical markers from their youth. There is now even a whole genre of music and a weekly radio show called ‘dad rock’ to deliver to these fans the music they want to hear. With a label like that, Generation X, Y and Z are sometimes turned off as it implies easy listening, parental values and people stuck in the past, but in fact, the music appears on their iDevice playlists nonetheless.

So if ones music tastes are fixed in their twenties, does that mean every time you hear a song from that stage in your life those memory cells are activated? Do our thoughts turn to more simple times and our DNA tingles with a youthful charge? Is the mental flexibility and openness of our youth reawakened, while the idealistic values of those times are remembered?
And for today’s generation — do they find the music interesting, antique or somehow relevant the same way a generation ago, jazz music held a certain magic but is now quasi-classic?

In contemporary music there is a lot of awareness of songs from the dad generation in the sampling of snippets of songs from the 70s and 80s. Artists like Puff Daddy (or whatever incarnation he goes by now) won a Grammy award with a song borrowing from that 80’s band the Police, with I’ll Be Missing You. Even Pharrell Wiliams number one song Blurred Lines had to recently pay millions in royalties for appropriating from a Marvin Gaye song from the 70’s. And one of my favorites homages to old time rock and roll is Kid Rock’s summer anthem All Summer Long where he uses two songs from the ’70s, starting with Werewolves in London and morphing into Sweet Home Alabama.

In my novel Coast Highway, a Romeo and Juliet story set in the 1970s Silicon Valley (released this fall), I reference sixty-two different bands and songs, which I have turned into Spotify and YouTube playlists. Trolling through all the versions of songs, concert footage and MTV videos from those times was a nostalgic trip for me down memory lane that put a smile on my face. Some of the videos were so campy you would think they were a Saturday Night Live comedy act, when in fact it was the style of the times. And this summer a lot of fashion houses are pushing hippie couture complete with bell-bottom jeans. The past is reinvented again and again.

An unbelievable number of older acts are touring these days with the dubious label dinosaur rock attached to particularly grey haired performers. Last year Fleetwood Mac was on the road again and my son had bought me a ticket to one of their shows as a birthday present. The old rockers played close to three hours non-stop and generated such a high energy level that even my son was impressed. It was surprising, considering he is more used to semi-underground bands from the States. The audience was an even mix of ‘dad rockers’ and people from their teens upwards. The band had become iconic and as living legends became a ‘must see’ act.

The British journalist Malcolm Muggeridge once said:

‘The pursuit of happiness, which American citizens are obliged to undertake, tends to involve them in trying to perpetuate the moods, tastes and aptitudes of youth.’

If Malcolm was correct, then not only the dad rockers looking to remain forever young but the younger generation curious about the magical elixir rock and roll offers should give the music and more in-depth listen. Perhaps it will give them a double dose of youthful energy with an unexpected depth.
So if good old rock and roll is alive and well in our music channels and individual playlists, then why try to categorize it as dad rock, which is generally seen as a critical designation implying premature senility with a well-developed dose of tinnitus. So lets skip the labels, get rocking and knock a few years off our lives.

The Rock Makes Toddler Believe She’s The Strongest Little Lady Ever, And It Will Make You Melt

Here’s Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, making us swoon — as per usual.

This past Wednesday, the wrestler-turned-actor shared a short clip on Instagram of a 2-year-old named “Kai” visiting the set of his upcoming movie, “Central Intelligence.” Kai wants to move an airplane all by herself and The Rock — being the awesome guy that he is– pulls it for her while letting her believe she did it on her own.

Story continues below.

Watch as Kai holds on to a rope attached to the plane while Johnson does the grunt work exclaiming, “You’re so strong! Oh my gosh, you’re pulling an airplane!”

After seeing him completely own a “Shake It Off” lip sync and be pretty-much-perfect with fans, we didn’t think it was possible for The Rock to win us over anymore. Wrong again!
