The couple, who got married on May 1, 1996, are also parents to 17-year-old daughter Lola and 15-year-old son Joaquin.

Since season 2 of CW’s soapy take on the Archie comics, Riverdale fans have come to know Michael’s father Mark as mobster Hiram, the scheming father of Veronica Lodge.

Michael will appear in a flashback episode in which stars KJ Apa and Lili Reinhart will take on the roles of their on-screen parents, too.

Riverdale was officially renewed for season 3 in April.

Nordstrom Snags Mr Porter’s Sam Lobban for New Men’s Role

Men’s wear continues to be a key focus for Nordstrom.
Two months after opening its first men’s-only store in New York City, Nordstrom has named Mr Porter executive Sam Lobban vice president of men’s designer and new concepts.
This new position is intended to “evolve the retailer’s men’s business,” the company said, and will support men’s merchandising, marketing, content development, store environment, private label and the shopping experience as it relates to men’s wear.
Lobban’s first day will be Tuesday and he will be based in New York. He will report to Pete Nordstrom, copresident of Nordstrom, with a dotted line to Paige Thomas, executive vice president and general merchandise manager of men’s wear.
Jeffrey Kalinsky, Nordstrom’s vice president and designer fashion director, introduced Pete Nordstrom to Lobban about a year ago, saying: “Here is a talented person you need to meet.”
For three years, Lobban has been buying manager for Mr Porter — the U.K. equivalent of divisional merchandise manager. He has been with the men’s division of Net-a-porter for seven years, starting as a member of the launch team and serving as senior buyer and buyer over the course of his career.
During his tenure, he was responsible for overseeing the Exclusive Capsule Collection

Everett’s homecoming sees him taking up new responsibilities as senior vice president, sales director for Sotheby’s luxury division. While previously only responsible for jewelry, he will now help expand the auction house’s luxury group — including jewelry, watches, wine, cars and “experiences.” Sotheby’s is also looking to get into the fashion game and has begun exploring how sales might include clothing, fashion jewelry and accessories.
The auction house officially unveiled a designated luxury division earlier this year. Before that, its component departments operated autonomously.
Said Everett in a statement: “After briefly turning back to retail I realized my talents and my passion truly align with auction. My favorite part of the job at Sotheby’s revolves around telling the stories about the works of art and the people who cared for them — from the personal collection of Mrs. Paul Mellon to the fascinating history revealed in the Stotesbury Emerald.

According to Deadline, the film is a remake of Dario Argento’s 1977 Italian horror movie and follows an American ballet dancer studying at a prestigious dance academy in Europe. She finds herself in peril as she begins to learn of the school’s dark history.

Billboard Proclaiming Role Of ‘Real’ Men And Women Sows A Sexist Mystery

A billboard in North Carolina declares a very strong opinion on “real” men and women ― and it has a lot of people talking about gender roles and family households.

The billboard along a Winston-Salem highway reads in large print, with no other context: “Real men provide. Real women appreciate it.”

An anonymous group leased the billboard for at least 30 days, The Associated Press reported.

Bill Whiteheart, president of the advertising company that owns the billboard, told CNN the group that purchased the $ 2,000 ad space wants to stay anonymous.

“We’re not supportive of or in opposition to the message,” Whiteheart told CNN. “We’re just the messenger.”

The billboard’s message, however, has offended some local residents. Boutique owner Molly Grace has created a Facebook event scheduled for Sunday morning to protest the billboard.

“I take it as a very deliberate jab at women who demand equality and demand to be seen as equals and those who are vocal,” Grace told local news station WXII-12. “To me, it’s also a very blatant statement about wanting to silence women and tell them to accept the way that things are.”

But not everyone thinks the sign is offensive. In fact, Grace’s Facebook event page has become a platform for debate on what the sign actually means.

Some argue that the sign devalues women who are breadwinners for their families and single women who provide for themselves. Others say the sign appears to be a derogatory statement against men who don’t provide for their families

“I would assume if you had a husband that loves you and appreciates you and showed it enough to carry your family and kids, that you would appreciate it,” resident Nathan Walin told WHNT News 19. “I don’t know why that would be offensive.

Heated discussions on the Facebook event page often touch on the lifestyle choices of single mothers, stay-at-home mothers and single working women. Grace clarified on Facebook that Sunday’s protest is about the sign’s “choice of words.”

“The sentiment that has upset SO many people…is the notion that these roles, on the billboard at least, are limited by their assigned gender,” Grace wrote on the Facebook event page.

Whiteheart, the owner of the billboard, said an announcement about the billboard would be coming. He didn’t elaborate, according to AP.

Syfy’s Newest Hero Talks About His Role In The Hit Show “The Expanse”

NPR praised The Expanse last year as the best science fiction in a decade for its grasp of physics in a future unlike ours. The characters live two hundred years from now when Mars and the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter are restive former colonies of Earth. One example of getting the physics just right: many of the show’s scenes are set in space ships where things like weightlessness are perfectly realized down to the smallest detail.

But the best realism in this series may be what’s all too similar to our own: betrayal, corruption, greed, aggression, and racism. They play out in the complex interlocking stories of a UN diplomat trying to stave off war between Mars and Earth, a battered PI on a missing persons case that unlocks a horrific biological secret with galactic implications, and a ship captain who starts out as an ordinary Joe but assumes heroic stature when his ship is destroyed and he brushes up against that secret.

2017-01-13-1484303991-3472185-straitexpanse.jpeg

People often dismiss genres like mystery and science fiction as nothing more than escapist entertainment. Best-selling British crime writer Val McDermid once told a spellbound class of mine in a study abroad program in London that there’s actually a long history of these genres making profound commentary about current social and political realities. The Expanse is a perfect example. Its gorgeous Season Two trailer asks the perennial question in a time of turmoil: “Which side are you on?”

No matter the genre, the best epics don’t just rely on spectacle, they’re rooted in human drama, in the emotional reality of individuals struggling to find balance as they hack their way forward through a jungle of chaos and lies. Steven Strait, who some readers might know from The Covenant, is the ideal lead to anchor a story with this kind of scope, playing the part of Captain James Holden with passionate intensity. He makes Holden intimately sympathetic, giving the captain a balanced mix of dignity and vulnerability that’s right in line with the character in the books The Expanse is based on. I recently asked him to reflect on various aspects of his work on the show. Here’s what he had to say:

LR: Before you auditioned for the part, did you have any preconceived notions of what it would demand of you? And have you read any of the books in the series?

SS: I had read the first two novels before I went in to read for the part, so I had the architecture for Holden’s character arc. I wasn’t sure exactly how the production was going to match the sheer scale and realism that was emphasized as a cornerstone in the books. No science fiction show of this size and tone had been done on television before, but the prospect of doing something new and ambitious was really exciting to me.

2017-01-13-1484319234-9750127-expansestrait01.jpg

LR: Given that’s you’d read those two books, what was central for you in creating Holden on screen? And what did you bring to the ways he’s forced to change from being a simple captain of his first ship the Canterbury to a hero and prime mover of the story line?

SS: The key to Holden for me was understanding his empathy and sense of calling. Not in a broad, philosophical way but in a personal one. He was deeply affected by what he experienced with the destruction of the Canterbury. That was the first domino to fall for Holden in becoming a leader. His sense of guilt and responsibility for the death of his friends pushes him to find justice and answers as to why it happened. As he moves deeper into the narrative, and he realizes that what he’s chasing effects, literally, the whole of humanity, his sphere of responsibility grows in turn. With more responsibility comes more compromise to his moral code which is very black-and-white and naive when you meet him. Over time it becomes grayer, simply because the more people, entities, and situations he has to deal with on an ever-increasing scale, the more he’s forced to compromise inside himself to get the job done. The question is how far can he push that compromise until his moral code breaks all together? It’s a fun tightrope to walk in playing him.

2017-01-13-1484319473-2879008-straitladder.jpg

LR: It sounds like it’s been a great immersion for you, and that’s probably one of the reasons the show is so gripping for viewers. How much time off did you have between shooting Season One and Two? Was that difficult?

SS: I think it was almost a full year between shooting the first and second season, which was difficult but understandable. The scope and nuance of the edit and the special effects are incredibly important to how well the show works. It was our first season, so they had to make sure everything was correct, and I’m glad they did.

LR: Everything on screen does seem perfectly chosen–it’s a visual feast. But do you think it would be a different experience for you playing a character like Holden who didn’t live in a future? And connected to that, does science fiction ask anything from actors as an ensemble that a contemporary drama doesn’t?

SS: Science fiction and period drama to me are two sides of the same coin. One happens to be in the future and one happens to be in the past. But regardless of when you’re playing, you still have to find why anyone should care about what you’re portraying. The humanity, flaws, and conflicts within the characters allow the audience to empathize with them. It helps that the future we’re portraying is very similar to the world we live in today. Which I think is the great benefit of science fiction: you’re able to talk about issues personally and politically which might not be digestible for an audience if they weren’t masked by different names and timelines of another era. So it becomes relatable without being threatening.

2017-01-13-1484319299-8618163-expansestrait3.png

LR: Looking back at Season One, has playing Holden turned out differently than you expected?

SS: The character arc for Holden that I prepared before we started season one was essentially how it turned out as the end result. I wanted to portray a non-archetypal hero where you see him stumble and struggle every step of the way. Becoming a leader for Holden isn’t an easy journey. He has it within him, but it’s not something that he ever wanted for himself until the destruction of his first ship the Canterbury forces it to the surface. What I was hoping to do was show, realistically, how a juvenile, naïve young man becomes a competent and passionate leader.

LR: That transformation is one of the best parts of watching The Expanse. What do you think you’ve learned as an actor in this show?

SS: More than anything, The Expanse reinforced, for me, the power of a truly integrated ensemble. Everyone on the show creatively gives everything they have and is open to collaboration. We rehearse on our weekends, and have since the first episode. The actors, writers, directors, we all collaborate and are open to each other’s ideas. As a result, I think we’ve become greater than the sum of our parts. The passion and excitement for working on it is infectious. It’s a wonderful environment to experiment and take creative risks because everyone feels safe. Truly, an amazing experience for me.

LR: Well, the camaraderie really comes across on screen. Stepping back from how things are, if you could play anyone else in The Expanse, who would it be?

SS: It would be [PI] Joe Miller. Simply because I think it would be interesting to play almost the exact opposite arc as Holden’s. You find Miller jaded and burnt out from years of corrupt work on Ceres station and through searching for Julie Mao [the missing person in Season One] and becoming obsessed with her, he finds himself. She’s a symbol of everything he’s lost and is hoping to find. It’s an intimate narrative to play, and Tom Jane has done it beautifully, with such nuance and intelligence it’s very difficult to imagine anyone else giving Miller a shot.

LR: How do you stay focused and avoid distractions when you’re working on the show?

SS: I was on set most days and when I got home I’d usually go for a run, look through the next day’s work, tinker on the choices and read resource material until I fell asleep and the cycle would start over again the next day. My time off was spent with my colleagues and our weekends were devoted to rehearsals for the most part. We have a uniquely committed creative culture on this show. The passion and desire to continually dig into the narrative, for character work and thematicall, was incredibly inspiring. It was all I wanted to do with my time.

Season 2 of The Expanse debuts February 1. Next week I’ll be interviewing Dominique Tipper about her role as Naomi Nagata.

Conleth Hill Almost Played A Different Role On ‘Game Of Thrones’

With 30 years in the business, Conleth Hill’s career, well, “Varys,” but how much it changes may be surprising.

The actor told The Huffington Post that with the exception of “Game of Thrones,” he generally doesn’t play the same character multiple times. He switches things up. In fact, Hill said that the only similarity between the mysterious eunuch he plays on the HBO show and the troubled author he portrays in his new thriller, “A Patch of Fog,” is that, you know, he’s both of them. In addition to those roles, Hill is currently in rehearsals for “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?” in the West End.

Like on “Game of Thrones,” Varys is just a busy guy.

Hill’s character on the HBO show has been known as the Master of Whisperers, so while chatting with the actor about his new projects, we asked about some real-life whispers, too. It may surprise some that Hill confirmed he already made a bid to sit on the Iron Throne as another character.

One time, I saw you dispelled that you were once a married fisherman before becoming an actor.

They took it from the Wikipedia entry, which I didn’t do. I don’t really go, apart from reading The Huffington Post, near the internet, but someone had filled in my Wikipedia with lots of mysterious details, which I have to say I found amusing.

There are other rumors, too.

Don’t believe anything you read.

One says you almost didn’t play your character, Sandy Duffy, in “A Patch of Fog.”

Thankfully, fortuitously, the guy who was gonna play him dropped out. I think before principal photography started, so I didn’t have much time to prepare, but I’m dealing with a great script, and everything I needed was on there.

Another rumor says you originally tried out for Robert Baratheon on “Game of Thrones.”

It is true, to be honest, but I have to say that I came out of the meeting, which went all right, and looked who was in after me, saw who it was, and went, “Well, he’d be all right for it,” and he was, and he got it. You know, that’s showbiz.

(Robert Baratheon was portrayed on “Game of Thrones” by actor Mark Addy.)

So then you had to read for Varys, too?

I read for it, parts of the dungeon scene with Ned and the chest scene where he explains how he was made from sort of a slave to the security of Westeros, and I think once I had already accepted the part, they said, “How do you feel about shaving your head?”

How is it finally getting to keep your hair in “A Patch of Fog”?

It’s seasonal. I cut it out and then it grows back. A bit colder this year because it’s a little bit later, filming well into the winter, but it’s just what I looked like before.

At the heart of your movie is this obsessed fan interacting with his idol, and there are some awkward selfies. What’s been the weirdest fan experience you’ve had so far?

I’ve been very lucky. Most “Game of Thrones” fans are well-mannered and courteous. I have no trouble taking photos with people if they want it. I think the weirdest one was someone came running toward me with their hand in my crotch area, saying, “I wanted to see if something’s really there.”

What? Really? That’s pretty crazy.

They didn’t make contact, so it was OK. Yeah, like I’d be that method.

“A Patch of Fog” is on VOD and iTunes Jan. 24.

Talking With Emily Tarver About ‘Donny’ And Her First Big-Time Role

“Donny” is a new comedy following real life ad-man, TV personality, and single father Donny Deutsch. Deutsch plays himself as the moronic host of a “Dr. Phil”-style daytime talk show under the direction of his executive producer/adult nanny, Pam (played by Emily Tarver). The show has a unique structure. It’s loosely scripted, and as a result, reads half reality show, half single camera comedy. I had the pleasure of talking to Emily Tarver about the real Donny, her character in the show, and what it’s like getting her first big time recurring role.

This is so cool! We used to hang out at UCB and now we have cool jobs!

Yeah, we’re not poor improvisers working for free!

Is this your first recurring role in a TV show?

Yes, this is my first recurring role that actually turned out to be a recurring role. I’ve booked other recurring roles that didn’t turn out to be recurring. So this is nice!

Tell me about the show and your character. You’re Donny’s executive producer?

Yes, I play the EP of the show within the show. She’s also the person in Donny’s life who keeps him in line and cleans up all the messes that he makes. The show is like “Seinfeld,” where the topic of the show within the show is normally the topic or the theme of the episode.

What has been your favorite topic?

Without giving anything away, he does one where the topic of the show within the show is about men of a later age coming out of the closet after being in a heterosexual marriage. Donny tries to be supportive of that and, in being supportive, he kind of announces that he is gay. That isn’t what he’s saying but while he’s trying to be brave for these people, he sounds like he’s coming out. So I have to clean up that mess. Not that it’s a PR nightmare; it’s just that he isn’t gay.

What’s your character trying to do on the show? Is Pam trying to get out of the show or this is her big shot as a producer?

Donny sees something in her and tells her that she is to come with him wherever he goes. And, over time, she grew into this position of alpha female and his producer of things. In real life, Donny surrounds himself with very strong women who put him in his place. And so I’m the shining symbol of that. I don’t put up with his shit and he doesn’t impress me. But she enjoys the challenge and she enjoys smacking his hand when he does something so Donny.

The show has a different type of look to it. Parts of it feel like a reality show. Others feel like “The Office.”

I definitely think that was done on purpose. A lot of people don’t know Donny or what he is about. People are like: is he an actor? A host? So the show’s trying to represent a lot of different genres. And because he’s playing himself, that reality feeling you get is because you can’t pin him down. It might be confusing for some people, but I think it’s cool to watch a show and go, “What is this?” Because the only answer is: Oh! It’s something new!

It does read very new because when you watch it, Donny doesn’t feel like an actor. He feels like the real thing and everybody else is acting around him. Was it weird acting with a guy playing himself?

Yeah! And I don’t want to toot Donny’s horn too much, but he’s just a genius and he’s so good at everything he tries. I think a big part of it is his extreme confidence. When we filmed the pilot presentation, he was giving me notes on my acting. And I was like, “Ahhh, OK.” And he was right about a lot of stuff. Being on set with him, he’ll have notes for actors and production and story and he’ll he right a lot of the time.

I also noticed that this season of TV is centered around older, distinguished antiheroes, like “The Grinder” or “Grandfathered.” “Donny” seems like a different take on it. Do you think this is a wave?

I think people are quick to categorize things because that’s how our brains work. These shows are so different and so good. And I don’t think “Donny” can be put into that category based on the lead because he’s surrounded by so many women. And Donny himself is such a feminist. He wants to tell women’s stories and have female perspectives on his life at all times. And the show reflects that. Donny doesn’t even have a male best friend.

How is doing press? Is this your first time doing big time junkets and stuff?

Yeah, we went to LA. It was just Donny and me. It was really fun.

What’s that like?

Well, you sit on stage in front of a bunch of long tables with people from different blogs on their laptops. And they have a bunch of questions. Then you go to a little room with 12 cameras. And a person has a bunch of questions. Luckily, Donny is used to it. I’m there as Emily, but also as Pam. Emily and Pam are very similar in terms of how they treat Donny. And our interaction is very organic. It’s actually been that way since my callback for the show. I had to do it with Donny while everybody on the show watched.

Are you and Donny on a texting basis?

I actually don’t have his number. And I haven’t asked for it, because I don’t want him to think that I want it. I want him to ask me for my number. And then he can be impressed that I have a 212 number.

Well, that’s a Season 2 thing.

Yeah, Season 2 for sure.

That’s odd. He seems like a guy who would need to be in constant communication with the people working close with him.

Well, I think he’s scared of me. I think he thinks I’m way cooler than him. I bet he thinks if he texted me it would bother me. I’ll never tell him that I think he’s cool. He can read it in your article.

Emily Tarver stars as Pam in USA’s “Donny“ premiering Tuesday, Nov. 10th at 10:30 p.m. ET.

Mike Epps Talks ‘Soaking’ Up Richard Pryor Role, Hints At Timeline

After a long casting process, it appears Lee Daniels’ Richard Pryor biopic is set to begin production soon.

The late comedian will be played by Mike Epps. According to Epps, the all-star cast — which includes Eddie Murphy, Oprah Winfrey, and Kate Hudson – is scheduled to begin filming in March 2016.

“We start prepping in January, and start shooting in March,” he said during an interview with The Huffington Post. “Eddie Murphy’s playing my father, Oprah Winfrey’s playing my grandmother, Kate Hudson’s playing my girl, and I’m playing Richard Pryor.”

Epps went on to share how preparing for the role of Pryor, who died in 2005, has required him to delve into the many layers of the late comedy legend.

“Right now, I’m just really soaking it up. I’m just a sponge right now,” he said. “Just doing a lot research on the history of Richard Pryor. Trying to figure out the things that I need to figure out to play certain scenes. How I need to feel. What state of mind I need to be in, because this guy was a roller coaster, man. It wasn’t easy. [He was] close to something that’s scientific — broken down into a whole lot of different ways.”

As the 44-year-old actor gears up for the iconic role, he is also busy promoting season 2 of Starz’s original series, “Survivor’s Remorse.” The comedy series, which is produced by NBA superstar LeBron James and follows the life of a young professional basketball star, Cam Calloway (played by Jessie T. Usher), as he navigates his newfound fame, wealth, and personal relationships.

While the show addresses relevant topics surrounding the lives of professional athletes, Epps — who plays Calloway’s uncle, Julius — says the show isn’t just relatable to people in the world of sports.

“The whole show itself is relatable to anybody that’s in show business because it’s ‘survivor’s remorse,’” he said. “So the whole thing about money, family, and friends, and love and all that — it all ties in together.”

Taye Diggs To Star In Lead Role In Broadway’s ‘Hedwig And The Angry Inch’

LOS ANGELES (Variety.com) – Taye Diggs will return to Broadway for the first time in a decade in “Hedwig and the Angry Inch,” stepping into the musical’s lead role after current star Darren Criss exits in July.

The revival, which launched last year with Neil Patrick Harris and walked away with four Tony Awards, has maintained a rotating roster of stars since Harris left, bringing in actors including Andrew Rannells, Michael C. Hall, original star John Cameron Mitchell and Criss for stints in the show. No actor has since yielded the high box office that Harris brought to the show.

Diggs’ turn in the musical will mark the first time the role has been played in a major New York production by African-American actor; prior performers to play the part in the show’s Off Broadway incarnation included current Tony nominee Michael Cerveris and Ally Sheedy. Diggs, who launched his career in the original Broadway production of “Rent” and has also appeared on Broadway in “Chicago” and “Wicked,” last appeared on a New York stage in a 2005 Off Broadway production of “A Soldier’s Play.”

Also the star of TNT drama “Murder in the First,” Diggs will star opposite Rebecca Naomi Jones in “Hedwig.” He begins his 12-week run in the production July 22 after Criss wraps up his engagement July 19.

“Hedwig” will also take the spotlight at the Tony Awards next month when Mitchell, the co-creator of the show, wins a special Tony Award for his performance in the show earlier this year.

Deborah Cox Describes ‘The Bodyguard’ Musical Role As A ‘Dream Of A Lifetime’

The musical theatre adaptation of Lawrence Kasdan’s 1992 Oscar-nominated film, “The Bodyguard” will make its North American debut with its Fall 2016 national tour.

The award-winning musical, which premiered at London’s Adelphi Theatre in Dec. 2012, will star Grammy Award-nominated singer-songwriter Deborah Cox as Rachel Marron (previously played by X-Factor winner Alexandra Burke) and directed by British theatre director Thea Sharrock.

Cox is keeping busy this summer. In addition to the announcement of her new musical gig, she is prepping the Summer release of her forthcoming album “Work Of Art,” and currently stars in a musical based on of the life of Josephine Baker. Cox will also co-host the Clear Channel Spectacolor’s simulcast of the 2015 Tony Awards on June 7.

In an exclusive statement to The Huffington Post, the multi-talented Canadian native says she is excited about her involvement in all three projects.

“I am honored to be chosen to co-host and perform with Justin Guarini for The Tony Awards in Times Square simulcast event,” she wrote.

“I am also honored to represent two of the most iconic and historic women of the 20th century with the Broadway bound ‘Josephine’ project and now the ‘Bodyguard.’ As a performing artist, it’s a dream of a lifetime to now have an opportunity to not only sing, but to also feature my acting and dancing talents. What a blessing!”

Why Miley Cyrus Is This Woman’s Non-Straight, Non-Binary Role Model

By Kelsey Marshall for YourTango.com

If you haven’t heard, Miley has been up to a lot more than sticking her tongue out and hanging out in her underwear.

In the course of two short days, Miley has kicked-off her foundation for homeless LGBT youth, the Happy Hippie Foundation, and given an interview to Out magazine where she discussed not identifying with any particular gender. She also cavalierly stated she’s had sexual relationships with women.

Miley isn’t playing around anymore. And I’m very happy about it.

 I’m downright enthusiastic.

In the wake of the complete Bruce Jenner tabloid debacle and subsequent (incredibly powerful and inspiring) interview, gender identity has been forced into the forefront of the public debate.

This is no less than amazing. This is something we should ALL be talking about.

Now more than ever, black and white are your two options for any kind of opinion. You either love the Kardashians or you hate them. The dress is either black and blue or it’s white and gold. Everyone should have guns or no one should.

Comment culture has made us into a strongly-opinionated fleet that leaves no room for middle ground. The Internet has taken something extremely valuable away from us: it’s taken away our gray area.

I don’t mean for this to be taken out of context. I am not referring to a gray area between right and wrong, between yes and no. I’m not referring to a gray area where I say one thing and mean another.

I’m talking about a gray area of identity and ownership.

What Miley is doing is perfectly demonstrating how to mean what you say and expect no less than to be taken seriously for it.

When she says she doesn’t identify as a girl or a boy, that in fact she would rather identify as nothing, then that’s exactly what she is. Even calling her “gender-queer” is a bit of a stretch, since she’s not using that word to describe herself.

It’s a complicated thing for a celebrity to identify themselves. No doubt Miley’s words will be taken out of context, flipped, stretched and contorted beyond recognition.

But she doesn’t care — and that’s a very valuable lesson.

Young people, especially young women, grow up with so much uncertainty. We’re told who to listen to, who to admire, what behavior is “slutty” and what behavior will grant us access to a life deemed acceptable.

There’s not a lot of room for understanding your own body, your own intentions, desires and goals.

You’re identified at birth with a gender that carries an incredible amount of social weight. And for some, that weight is so heavy that suicide is the only answer.

When you’re faced with so many decisions that already seem made for you, right down to your gender identity, speaking your own truth is an incredibly terrifying task.

When Bruce Jenner spoke out about his transition to becoming a woman, he was called attention-seeking. Yet, he did it anyway and adamantly. No one should have to be concerned with the outcome of their truthful words or how others might hear them.

The part that matters is the truth.

I can understand Miley’s struggle with gender. I’m a lesbian, and gender and identity is something I struggle with every day. To hear a young woman who faces so much criticism in her everyday life state, “I don’t relate to what people would say defines a girl or a boy, and I think that’s what I had to understand: Being a girl isn’t what I hate; it’s the box that I get put into” is incredibly powerful to me.

In fact, it’s freeing.

It isn’t just young people she’s standing up for. It’s every single person that’s ever felt stifled by an identity they were assigned at birth or even an identity they gave themselves. It’s standing up for me and the times when I want to agree that I find a man sexually attractive and don’t say it, in fear that I’ll misrepresent my own identity.

Miley isn’t representing or misrepresenting any identity. She’s just being herself.

Whatever label you put on yourself or the world puts on you, it doesn’t mean half as much as the what you feel inside and your pride to express every worthy thought you have.

Because we’re all worthy of that — celebrity or not. We’re worthy enough to be proud of what makes us unique and what makes us not quite fit into a box. We’re worthy enough to find our own identity and be okay with the parts of ourselves that still might not fit tidily under that umbrella.

What we really need to learn is this: labels and identities aren’t one-size-fits-all. Neither are people.

You’re never going to be just one thing — and that’s f*cking awesome.

Josh Hartnett Lost Out On Another Role Because He Passed On ‘Batman’

Josh Hartnett regrets passing on “Batman,” but not for the reason you may think.

Speaking to HuffPost Live on Wednesday, the actor explained that he’d met with Christopher Nolan while the director was casting for the 2005 installment, but he’d actually hoped to discuss his next film, “The Prestige,” instead.

“[‘Batman’] was not what I was interested in,” Hartnett recalled. “I really wanted to convince him that when he did the ‘The Prestige,’ maybe hire me.”

“And then, of course, as time went on, he ended up hiring the guy who he hired to play ‘Batman’ to play in ‘The Prestige,'” Hartnett continued, referring to Christian Bale.

The experience served as a teachable moment for the “Penny Dreadful” star.

“I realized much later that this is a relationship business,” said Hartnett, adding that he “regret[s] not forming a relationship with a great filmmaker [Christopher Nolan].”

“That was not necessarily where my head was at the time,” he concluded.

How One Designer Is Using ‘Role Models Not Runway Models’ To Empower Women

While New York Fashion Week featured many famous faces during its opening night on Feb. 12, it was the lesser-known ones that may have made the biggest impact.

Designer Carrie Hammer’s runway show “Role Models Not Runway Models” was a highlight of NYFW for the second year in a row. “Role Models Not Runway Models” featured female CEOs, writers, actresses and entrepreneurs.

“I think it’s important that women understand that beauty comes from power, personality, and accomplishments,” Hammer said. “The women we put on the runway are all at the top of their respective fields.”

463269450
Hammer walks the runway during the Role Models Not Runway Models show.

The models included Brandthropologie CEO Billee Howard, Nexus founder Rachel Cohen Gerrol, senior editor of Bustle.com Marie Ospina and Director of Public Affairs at Coca-Cola Missy Owens.

In 2014, Hammer’s show featured the first model in a wheelchair in NYFW and this year she included “American Horror Story” actress Jamie Brewer, the first model with Down syndrome to walk the runway.

“I think this challenges what we’ve been seeing for way too long. Uniformity. It’s time to see not just diversity — but reality,” Hammer said.

Petition Calls For Recast Of Scarlett Johansson’s Role In ‘Ghost In The Shell’

A recent petition is calling for Scarlett Johansson’s role in “Ghost in the Shell” to be recast on the grounds of whitewashing.

Earlier this month, Variety reported that Johansson had signed on to star in DreamWorks’ big-screen adaptation of the anime adventure, focusing on the story of a covert operations unit in the Japanese National Public Safety Commission and following the lead protagonist, Major Motoko Kusanagi.

While the 30-year-old certainly has had box office success starring in action films, like Marvel’s “Avengers” series and “Lucy,” after the announcement was made critics called the casting “whitewashing” due to the comic’s Japanese origins.

Now, there is a Care2 petition requesting DreamWorks consider recasting the role.

“What concerns me is the fact that minority actors are so rarely given opportunities in big-budget leading roles,” petition author Julie Rodriguez said in a press release sent to The Huffington Post. “It’s a self-defeating cycle: Hollywood insists viewers won’t be drawn unknown minority actors, but they’re never given the chance to break out of a narrow set of background roles to prove themselves. ‘Ghost in the Shell’ could have been a perfect opportunity to buck this trend, but instead promising actresses are being passed over.”

The petition has a goal of 14,000 signatures and has already collected more than 13,000.

Others have voiced issue with the fact that an Asian-American actress was not chosen. Marissa Lee, co-founder of the entertainment equality group Racebending, wrote a blog post in response to DreamWorks’ decision, explaining that it’s a missed opportunity for inclusive representation.

“Ultimately, ‘Ghost in the Shell’ is a story about what makes us human. Having access to powerful media representation is key for minorities to be seen as human. As a successful white actress, Scarlett Johansson has been privileged to play powerful women characters in action films. ‘Ghost in the Shell’ was a chance for an actress of Asian descent to have that same opportunity.”

A representative for DreamWorks was not immediately available for comment.

‘American Horror Story: Freak Show’ Actress Spills Details About Her Role

Here’s a side of “American Horror Story” you’ve never seen before.

Behind all the crazy scary teasers and trailers for “AHS: Freak Show” are real people — actors who sometimes have to deal with unique challenges.

Due to a condition called sacral agenesis, actress Rose Siggins’ legs were amputated when she was young, but, given the chance, she wouldn’t change a thing. Siggins embraces her role as Legless Suzy on “AHS.”

“American Horror Story: Freak Show” premieres Wednesday, Oct. 8, at 8:00 p.m. ET on FX.

Why Lena Dunham Is My Role Model

These days, it’s not really that unique for a woman to be running a television show and acting in it. We’ve seen it be done many times over the years. But, what makes Lena Dunham (writer, director, creator, Wonder Woman behind HBO’s Girls) stand out so much to me is her authenticity. It was clear from the first time I watched her show, even though I was a freshman in high school and didn’t understand about half of the cultural references, that she was different. That day, I laid eyes on the woman who would influence many of my ideas, words and fashion choices and ultimately inspire me to just be, well, me.

Of course, throughout my whole life, I was always “me.” I didn’t have a body switch incident (maybe one day). But, reading Lena Dunham’s honest tweets about everything from serious business like the Woody Allen rape allegations to simple things like meeting a dog named Yvonne made having clear opinions, things scarcely seen in high school, so desirable. Though I’ve never met a dog named Yvonne (maybe one day), Lena just gets it. I always used to feel that by letting the world know what I was thinking, I was being overindulgent, and my opinion would be discarded or rejected by society. Lena Dunham has taught me an important lesson: Who cares?

Lena, or L-Duhnz, as I called her in the dream I had where we ran into each other at a local Starbucks, conjures honest but hardly ever seen on television themes and incidents into her show, like the human body, and lets them loose in the flesh (no pun intended). She even delves into her own past of growing up with OCD and illustrates it beautifully, making me feel like I fought that battle with her even though I didn’t. She has shown me that everybody heals differently and there are many ways to cope with life’s difficulties. Before watching Girls, it never occurred to me that talking about your feelings wasn’t the only way to let them go. That is why I felt a constant tornado of teen angst and feelings, because I don’t particularly enjoy talking. But, Lena Dunham’s character Hannah Horvath’s experiences let me know that instead of having to assemble careful sentences to somebody I don’t like, I can dance to Robyn’s “Dancing on My Own,” or sing “Wonderwall” in the bathtub and feel just as liberated.

I know Lena Dunham may not seem like your average role model. I still remember the look on my mother’s face when I accidentally let it slip that I had already watched two seasons of Girls. We all make sacrifices. But Lena Dunham has a three-dimensional, genuine vibe that will always find her place in my heart to be above all others. Yes, I know she writes scenes where she is completely naked doing the dirty. But, do you do it with your clothes on? Yes, I know she writes scenes where she snorts cocaine off a toilet seat. But, has no twentysomething in New York ever snorted cocaine? America has been afraid to approach “touchy subjects” in their media, and only ever showing modesty and purity is making people ashamed of their own bodies and allured by activities deemed too inappropriate for television. Also, if you recall, I didn’t say my lesson from Lena Dunham was “please everyone.”

I remember a line from Girls where Shoshanna says something about having to break a few eggs to accomplish what she wanted to do and it stuck in my head. To this day I can’t look at an egg without thinking of Shosh’s message. Lena Dunham showed me that you can either follow the rules and be good, or you can follow your dreams and be great.

Stephen Colbert Reveals His Role In ‘The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug’

Fans of “The Colbert Report” know that Stephen Colbert is one of the most devoted and knowledgeable fans of J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle Earth. He geeked out about “The Lord of the Rings,” and has continued his fan obsession into the new “The Hobbit” trilogy. On “Late Show with David Letterman,” he revealed that he scored a role in “The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug.”

At first, Letterman didn’t believe Colbert’s claim that he was in the film. “I’m kind of the breakout star of ‘The Hobbit,’ Dave,” Colbert insisted. “I don’t want to tell anybody where I am, but I am in it.” He even encouraged Letterman to check out the IMDb page for the film if he didn’t believe him.

After some prodding, Colbert provided a few details of how it happened, as well as a tease where fans can look for him. “I and my wife and my two boys were invited down to New Zealand to play around with the folks in ‘The Hobbit’ by Peter Jackson,” he said. “We went down there, and we’re in a scene in Laketown. I don’t want to say where in the movie. It’s kind of a ‘Where’s Waldo?'”

Fans can look for Stephen Colbert and his family in “The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug” when the film opens nationwide on December 13. “The Colbert Report” airs Monday through Thursday at 11:30 p.m. EST on Comedy Central, while “Late Show with David Letterman” airs every weeknight at 11:35 p.m. EST on CBS.
