Charity, Anyone?: Tumi’s annual retail promotion that supports All Hands & Hearts is slated to run this year from Sept. 13 to Sept. 23. Shoppers enjoy 20 percent off full-price retail items at Tumi stores and at Tumi.com, with 5 percent of total sales earmarked for donation to the charity.
All Hands & Hearts is a nonprofit organization founded by model Petra Nemcova to help rebuild safe and resilient schools in areas hit by natural disasters.
Last year’s event saw Tumi donate $ 400,000 from the customer-sales campaign to the organization, which used the funds to rebuild The Rhodes School of Performing Arts in Houston. The Rhodes School, damaged last year by Hurricane Harvey, is a tuition-free campus that caters primarily to low-income, minority communities.
In addition to the donation, the travel brand helped All Hands & Hearts gather volunteers to work on reconstruction efforts. Tumi also partners with St. Jude Children’s Hospital and Waves for Water.
Nemcova, part of the relief efforts in Houston in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey, said she heard of the school’s plight from local partners.

Moda Operandi Sets Summer Shoe Week

Moda Operandi is combatting summertime doldrums with “Shoe Week,” a new sales franchise that solely promotes fashion for the feet.
Seven advance trunk show sales have been scheduled to take place from Monday to Aug. 12. Some sales have a theme, like “Curb-to-Cab,” which focuses on impractical stiletto shoes in which one can barely walk.
Other sales highlight a single brand, as is the case with the site’s Jimmy Choo sale. Additional focuses of the week include mule styles and sneakers. New designer callouts for the week include labels A by Anabelle, Stella Luna and Saptodjojokartiko.
Moda’s vice president for nonapparel Jodi Kaplan explained of the emphasis on shoes: “It’s a growing category. Shoes get a lot of exposure, clients are definitely interested in wardrobing shoes. It’s been interesting to see the breadth of shoe styles our lady is interested in — everything from sneakers to heels.”
Kaplan said the site experiences near equal sales of shoes and handbags, and that she is “looking to grow both categories.”
Shoe Week trunk shows will remain on the live site for the duration of August.

Canada Goose Sets Refuge-Style Pop-Up At BHV Marais

WEATHER NEST: Canada Goose is teaming up with BHV Marais in Paris for a weather-themed pop-up store installation from Sept. 6 to 26.
As brands and department stores broaden their strategies to lure in consumers, Canada Goose and BHV Marais are offering a weather experience to clients in the dome-roofed Observatoire space of the department store’s top floor.
Called “Weather Patterns,” the spiral-shaped refuge will offer Canadian weather noises to visitors in its outer ring and a weather atmosphere in the center. A representation of the sky overhead is meant to project the beauty of the northern lights.
Set up during design week in Paris by Public Studio, the display will show fabrics used for key pieces of the brand’s fall collection in greens, blues and gold alluding to nature, art and music.
The Canadian label will sell vests, parkas and accessories at the temporary store. Artist Yves Klein served as inspiration for the project.

Dior Sets Pop-up at Harrods

GREEN SCENE: Dior is celebrating creative director Maria Grazia Chiuri’s fall women’s ready-to-wear collection with a pop-up store at Harrods, set to run from Aug. 4 to 31, that will include a window display dedicated to its Dior Oblique logo canvas.
The motif has been rendered in green — a nod to the London department store’s signature color — for an exclusive and limited-edition range of Saddle, Miss Dior and CD Hobo bags. It will also appear on accessories that will make their debut at the store, including Diorquake pouches, clogs and several styles of Mitzah silk scarves.
For the first time, Dior will offer customers the opportunity to personalize its embroidered Dior Book Tote with the word, first name or initials of their choice.
The Harrods pop-up is part of a global campaign to promote the collection, which was inspired by Sixties youth culture. Dior’s Paris headquarters at 30 Avenue Montaigne have been wrapped with the colorful collage of images culled from the protest and feminist posters of the May 1968 student uprising in France.

ASVOFF Festival Sets New Dates and Venue for 10th Anniversary

CHANGE OF SCENERY: The annual fashion-centric short film festival “A Shaded View on Fashion Film” has found a new venue for its 10th anniversary edition after Pierre Cardin withdrew from the event.
Originally set to take place from Sept. 7 to 9 at the 96-year-old designer’s Palais Bulles, located in the French city of Théoule-sur-Mer on the Mediterranean coast, the festival has been rescheduled for Oct. 12 to 14 at the Club de l’Etoile near the Arc de Triomphe in Paris, organizers said, without proving additional details.
The jury, to be headed by Spanish actress Rossy de Palma, will include Rick Owens and his wife and muse Michèle Lamy; Jean Paul Gaultier; costume designer Eric Daman; Pamela Golbin, chief curator of fashion and textiles at Les Arts Décoratifs; artist Orlan, and film critic Elisabeth Quin, among others.

Riccardo Tisci Sets Collaboration With Vivienne Westwood at Burberry

LIVING INSPIRATION: Riccardo Tisci is set to work with one of his original design inspirations, Vivienne Westwood.
Burberry’s chief creative officer, who will unveil his first collection for Burberry in September, announced the Westwood collaboration on Instagram earlier today.
“Vivienne was one of the first designers who made me dream to become a designer,” Tisci wrote. “I am SO honored to announce a new Burberry collaboration with the original British Punk.”
The limited-edition collection will feature re-imagined signature styles from Burberry’s archive and it will launch in December 2018. Proceeds from the collaboration will support Cool Earth, a non-profit organization whose mission is to halt rainforest deforestation.
“When I first started at Burberry, I knew it would be the perfect opportunity to approach her to do something. She is a rebel, a punk and unrivalled in her unique representation of British style, which has inspired so many of us. I am so incredibly proud of what we will be creating together.”
Tisci succeeded Christopher Bailey as chief creative officer at Burberry in March. He previously held the role of creative director at Givenchy, from 2005 to 2017.

The Black Tux Play at Nordstrom Sets Up Showroom Concept for Growth

The Black Tux chief executive officer and cofounder Andrew Blackmon is busy to say the least. The men’s brand is set to have 15 showroom concepts open total at Nordstrom by June following March’s raise of a $ 30 million series C.
The growth will bring the business, which began as a digital direct-to-consumer brand aimed at the new generation of grooms and groomsmen, to markets such as Austin, Baltimore and Philadelphia after the business’ most recent additions in Southern California in Nordstrom’s Glendale and Topanga stores.
“It’s going very well,” said Blackmon, who started the business in 2013 with Patrick Coyne, of the Nordstrom partnership. “We have strong conversion rates. Our goals are really to drive awareness. So people who aren’t comfortable renting online, giving them an option to do [purchasing] in-store and then also provide a point of differentiation where customers can have a really good experience.”
The showrooms are often overbooked on appointments, the ceo added.
All of this is being aided with the company’s recently raised capital, which helped to expand The Black Tux’s logistics capacity via the opening of a 100,000-square-foot warehouse and dry-cleaning facility in Pennsylvania. Chanel Sets May 3 as Date for Cruise Show in Paris

GRAND DESIGNS: Chanel has set May 3 as the date of its cruise show in Paris. The collection, designed by Karl Lagerfeld, will be shown at the Grand Palais, as reported.
Chanel last month reaffirmed its commitment to the venue, signing on as the exclusive private sponsor of the renovation of the Grand Palais with plans to pledge 25 million euros toward the works, which are due to be completed in time for the Summer Olympics in Paris in 2024.
France is proving a popular destination for this year’s crop of cruise shows. Louis Vuitton will head to the south of France for its display on May 28, but has yet to disclose the exact location, while Gucci will stage its show in Arles on May 30.
Prada, meanwhile, will unveil its cruise collection in New York on May 4, but has kept details about the location under wraps.

Indochino Cuts Delivery Time, Sets Showroom Expansion

Indochino, the Canada men’s made-to-measure clothing brand, is raising the ante.
The company is now committing to deliver all orders within three weeks, down from the current four weeks. The company is working closely with its strategic partner, China’s Dayang Group, one of the largest suit manufacturers in the world, to cut down on production time. Indochino has also partnered with a new shipping and logistics provider, which has further reduced delivery time.
“Indochino’s goal is to make great fitting, personalized clothing the de facto choice for men across North America and achieving a three-week delivery timeframe marks a major milestone in this bold endeavor,” said chief executive officer Drew Green. “This is the result of months of hard work from my team and our partners across the world and is just the beginning of our plans to reduce the delivery time as we continuously strive to find innovative new ways to provide our customers with a world-class experience, from start to finish.”

Luxury fashion distributor MadaLuxe Group has entered retail with a proposition that combines two sectors bucking much of the pain points in today’s shifting consumer landscape.
That is, open a multi-brand luxury, off-price boutique in one of the busiest outlet centers in the nation, making a splash at its first move into brick-and-mortar retail ahead of plans to continue expanding the concept next year.
“With luxury, if you really think about it, all of Europe is known for their multi-brand luxury boutiques. The U.S. is not,” said MadaLuxe Group chief executive officer and cofounder Sandy Sholl. “Jeffrey sold to Nordstrom a few years ago. There’s just very few so this country doesn’t have a lot of those to begin with in full-line and there’s never been a multi-brand, multi-category luxury off-price boutique experience.”

Alice McCall Sets International Expansion Plans

NEW IN: Alice McCall, the Australian label known for its ultrafeminine dresses and playsuits, is looking to put itself on the international map.
McCall, a former stylist who founded the label in 2004, said partnering with Net-a-porter was the most obvious step in spearheading her brand’s expansion strategy.
McCall has also been working on creating a pricing structure and addressing seasonality requirements, with a particular focus on the U.K.
Net’s buying team said it was drawn to the femininity of the brand, and bought heavily into dresses, particularly occasionwear such as silk-organza gowns and floral dresses.
Prices vary from 220 pounds to 620 pounds, an accessible price point that’s aligned with Net’s strategy to introduce more contemporary labels to the mix.
The retailer also said it’s working with McCall on an exclusive capsule, set to launch in April.
In addition to the Net tie-in, McCall said she will continue to look for the right global partners to further expand the brand’s distribution. She said she’s currently in talks with a number of department stores and in the long term will also look to expand the brand’s international retail footprint with London being a key location.

Corneliani’s Sets New Direction With Blessing From Investcorp

NEW YORK — There’s a new Corneliani in the offing.
Last June, the luxury Italian men’s brand sold a majority stake to Investcorp, the Bahrain-based investment group, in a deal estimated at around $ 100 million. Corneliani, founded in 1958 and still based in the northern town of Mantua, reported sales of more than 110 million euros in 2015.
Since the sale in mid-2016, the new owners have put together a whole new team — many of whom were poached from competitors — and the results are starting to become evident.
There’s a new creative director, head of North America and marketing chief, all of whom joined the brand over the past few months from Ermenegildo Zegna. In addition to a more-modern aesthetic in its collection, the re-branding campaign will include a new logo, packaging, the launch of an e-commerce site, a new retail concept and the return to the Pitti Uomo show after a decade.
“This is year zero,” said Stefano Gaudioso Tramonte, general merchandising manager and style director. “The challenges have been hard and heavy, but the idea is to make some enhancements to the brand and blow away the dust that has collected over the last 10 years.”

Rachel Zoe Sets ‘Pop-In Shop’ in East Hampton, Spring 2018 Fashion Show in L.A.

Next month, Rachel Zoe will dip her toes into the warming waters of the seasonal East Coast retail scene with her first-ever East Hampton “pop-in shop” at What Goes Around Comes Around. The shop will feature a selection of Rachel Zoe Collection’s pre-fall and fall pieces styled with her picks from WGACA’s vintage selection.
Zoe will launch the shop — open from August 5 to 13 — with a VIP shopping night on August 4. “I wasn’t ready to open up my own pop-up shop for the whole summer, but I have known the guys at What Goes Around Comes Around for 20 years, so we thought, ‘Why not do a pop-in shop for part of the season?’ It’s a great way to have a presence in a place that’s like my second home. Lucien Pagès Sets Vacation Pop-up at Colette

SUMMER FUN: Paris p.r. guru Lucien Pagès is taking over Colette’s first-floor space in August with a summer-themed pop-up dubbed “Les Vacances de Lucien.”
From Aug. 7 to Sept. 2, visitors to the landmark concept store will be able to pick up specially created items from the brands represented by his agency, many of which are one-offs, as well as selections from their fall collections.
Olympia Le-Tan, for example, has created a series of her signature clutches based on key works from gay literature, while Vanessa Seward has designed a T-shirt, jeans and a shopping basket for the occasion. A.P.C.’s Jean Touitou has hand-painted a range of jeans, Loewe will offer a line of espadrilles, while RVDK/Ronald van der Kemp is proposing an African-themed selection.
Graphic design duo M/M (Paris) created a logo for the pop-up, and is also behind the window displays of the store, which are set to remain in place for two weeks. The logo has been reproduced on items like pens and frisbees to be offered for sale.
Dior makeup artist Peter Philips has created a video installation inspired by summer beauty, which will be shown in the windows of the Rue Saint-Honoré store. Vincent Darré will decorate the mezzanine

Made for L.A.: Billy Reid Sets Up Shop at Magasin

Billy Reid will plant a flag — albeit temporary — on the West Coast today. The Alabama designer is set to kick off his monthlong pop-up shop at friend Josh Peskowitz’s Magasin concept shop in Culver City, Calif., with a made-to-measure event running through the weekend.
“We think it’s a good opportunity for them to showcase more of who they are in Los Angeles,” Peskowitz said. “It’s a nice, organic partnership certainly and I have an enormous amount of respect for him.”
The temporary installment will carry exclusives including hand-painted graphic shirts and an assortment of tailored pieces, such as shorts made from selvage chambray. This weekend, clients of the brand can come into the store for custom orders, which have about a four- to six-week turnaround.
The designer, while having done trunk shows and special installations within his own stores, has never offered the made-to-measure experience outside of those and Reid said the success of what happens at Magasin will no doubt be weighed for the possibility of doing similar events going forward.
“We do not have a shop out here on the West Coast, but we have several customers out here,” Reid said. “I think once we go through it and figure out

Rachel Zoe, who hosted a dinner for her winter edition Box of Style on Wednesday night at Chateau Marmont, is already thinking ahead to fall 2017. The Los Angeles-based designer and stylist decided to present her next collection in L.A. at the beginning of February ahead of New York Fashion Week, where she has traditionally shown her main collections.
“I’m still a small designer; I can’t take over the Griffith Observatory, but I felt it was time to own being an L.A. designer,” said Zoe, who took her apparel business in-house this year. Zoe said she decided after her last New York show that it was time to switch coasts “for a minute.”

Let us note that all the RSFDGrC 2009 plenary speakers, Ivo Düntsch, Zbigniew Suraj, Zhongzhi Shi, Sergei Kuznetsov, Qiang Shen, and Yukio Ohsawa, contributed with the full-length articles in the proceedings. Rebecca Moses Sets Tokyo Exhibit

MATERIAL WORLD: The Isetan Art Gallery in Tokyo is staging an exhibition of paintings by Rebecca Moses. “It’s a selection of my works related to Italy,” said the fashion and interiors designer and artist, who has lived for years in Italy working for brands including Genny and had her own namesake line, now shuttered, produced in the country. Tokyo’s National Art Center Sets Issey Miyake Retrospective

The “Miyake Issey Exhibition: The Work of Miyake Issey” will feature a range of pieces highlighting 45 years of the designer’s work where he explores his “one piece of cloth” philosophy fusing traditional methods with technology.
The National Art Center will showcase Miyake’s designs spanning from the Seventies to the present, including iconic garments ranging from Plastic Body, Rhythm Pleats, Pleats Please, A-POC to his more recent 132_5 concept.
The exhibition is slated to run from March 16 through June 13.

Kunsthal Rotterdam Sets Peter Lindbergh Retrospective

LONG SHOT: The Kunsthal Rotterdam is launching a major retrospective dedicated to Peter Lindbergh in September 2016.
“A Different History of Fashion,” curated by Thierry-Maxime Loriot (the model-turned-curator behind the Jean Paul Gaultier retrospective), will present images of the German fashion photographer through the eyes of 25 fashion designers including Azzedine Alaïa, Gaultier, Giorgio Armani and Rei Kawakubo with their respective commentaries on Lindbergh’s snapshots and pieces from their collections.
In addition to the 250 photographs and the designers’ creations display, the exhibit will showcase unseen materials including Polaroids, storyboards, sets and behind-the-scenes films with Lindbergh’s muses Kate Moss and Mariacarla Boscono (Lindbergh gave the museum access to his personal archives).
Plus, there will be video interviews with collaborators including Nicole Kidman, Cindy Crawford and Lara Stone.
“His natural images — often in black-and-white — stand out among the excessive overretouching found now in other photographers’ work,” Kunsthal director Emily Ansenk stated.
“The poetic storytelling of his work is about reality, honesty, but also about the personality of the subjects he photographs, something many can relate to,” the Dutch contemporary museum director added.
The exhibit is set to run from Sept. 10, 2016, until Feb. 12, 2017, and tour internationally from 2017 on.

PVH Sets Marketing Plan for Van Heusen Flex Collar Shirts

The product took nearly two years of research to create, but PVH Corp. is finally ready to throw its marketing muscle behind publicizing the Flex Collar dress shirt.
PVH worked with Talon International Inc. to develop the proprietary Tekfit stretch technology that allows collars to expand up to a half-inch without wrinkling or changing the collar structure.
David Sirkin, president of dress shirts for PVH Corp., said the shirts quietly hit department stores in June for Father’s Day and have had success at retail since then.
So for fall, PVH is planning a comprehensive marketing campaign around the product. This includes a commercial showing tight collar moments from classic movies and TV shows as well as digital shorts shot at MetLife Stadium featuring New York Giants running back Rashad Jennings, center Weston Richburg, linebacker Devon Kennard, defensive tackle Johnathan Hankins, tackle Justin Pugh and former Giant Jessie Armstead. The films show the players in humorous situations where more space means more comfort and will be shown on all PVH’s social media channels.

Menlook.com Sets Focus on Mobile Commerce

PARIS — French men’s e-tailer Menlook.com feted its fifth-year anniversary on a slick new party boat docked on the shores of the Seine River in Paris on Wednesday night.
“I admit, we have never done anything on this scale before,” beamed Marc Menasé, the Web site’s founder. “But then, we are an international company -75 percent of our business happens outside of France,” he added, noting the site logs 3.7 million visits a month.
The e-tailer operates offices in Paris, London, Hamburg, Singapore and also Barcelona, which opened this summer with a special platform for personal shopping.
“E-commerce is a solo experience – you sit alone in front of a computer. But men need advice. Our works via email, telephone, and Skype,” said Menasé.
Menlook started in 2010 with 50 brands, and today boasts more than 800. Customers spend on average 170 euros, or $ 190 at current exchange, per visit, with the number of recurring visitors “increasing significantly” each year, according to Menasé.
“With the style advice and the CRM that we have done, we are getting close to 2.5 orders per client per year,” he said.
The executive expects sales to climb 60 million euros, or $ 67 million, by year-end, aiming to attain 100 million euros, or $ 112 million,

When Art Sets Us Free From Feeling Inadequate

“I was tired of feeling myself inadequate,” Olga said to me in her charming Russian accent during our interview for Waking Up in America. There was no self-pity in her voice, only a matter-of-fact manner and a passion for life.

The two of us were sitting in her art gallery (named simply “O”) talking about the waking up moment that shifted Olga’s life and launched her into the world of art, entrepreneurship, and teaching.

We were surrounded by her eclectic paintings mounted on the walls from floor to ceiling. But it wasn’t only canvases and prints that filled every inch of the beautiful space in Nashville’s popular Marathon Village. The colors, the themes, styles and staging in her paintings exuded the story not so much of her life’s events, but of her spirit – of risk, love, courage, freedom and confidence.

Olga Alexeeva was a Russian stage actress who came to America in 1991 to join her sister when the Berlin Wall fell and the big shift in Eastern European communist countries began to happen.

Life in America was radically different from anything Olga had known.

“The first ten years took me to speak English, because I came with no language. I remember the first time I saw a checkbook… I was a grown woman with a child, and I’d never seen a checkbook. I remember how… I was amazed by richness of Walmart. I hit my head through the door because it was so clean I didn’t see it and boom… That was ‘waking up in America’… And I remember that my first photo I sent to Russia, was from a grocery store.”

Slowly, with the support and kindness of people she met in Nashville, her new life began to take shape “like from crumbles of the dough in a bowl.”

But this physical shift of switching continents, of moving from one culture to a completely different one, was only a part of her path in truly stepping into the life she was meant for.

Russia had provided Olga with a free education; a college degree in acting led to a respectable job at a government-sponsored repertory theater. She learned and developed discipline, excellence, and a sense of striving for perfection, but there were also limitations that stifled her potential to be a creative artist, a powerful entrepreneur and an influential community leader.

America provided Olga with the support she needed to make another shift, a much more important internal one.

LISTENING TO THE SOUL’S HUNGER AND FINDING NEW PATHS

“When I came here, and I satisfied my hunger for food, for shelter, for everything, my soul was hungry for creativity.”

Olga tried ballroom dancing and public speaking, and only considered a painting class so she could take it off her list of possibilities.

For years she held onto her insecurities, and her life seemed like a daily reminder of it.

“All children spoke English and I didn’t. Think about it. Little baby, little child speaks English and I, an adult can not. That’s already a shift, so that kind of added to my insecurity… I never considered paintings as one of my activities because I knew I could not paint.”

Insecurity is one of those things we aren’t born with. We learn it. We start believing that we are simply not good enough. Insecurity feeds into our sense of inadequacy and because of it, we often never even attempt to try what our hearts long for. “I can’t sing. I can’t dance. I can’t paint. I can’t believe in miracles. I can’t heal. I can’t surrender to love…” Most of us have said something along these lines at some point in our lives. Most of us accept those lines as our own – as if we have been given a script from which we say those lines and never doubt that perhaps, the script we are reading from is really someone else’s, not our own.

And most of us need a prompt, a wake-up call, an angel, God-in-some-skin, to help us open our eyes and realize we CAN change the course of the story that IS our own.

“Hazel King, she is a legend in town… she welcomed me with the open arms and an open heart…”

It was King, a talented local painting instructor, who prompted Olga to let go of her insecurities. King believed in Olga when Olga didn’t believe in herself. And that was enough to launch.

“I just started to go. I started to paint and step by step, I painted more and more and went to different classes and I started to do different shows. It was just like [when] you start skiing. Stand there! Hey, go! And too-doot, I even could not stop!”

Olga owns two galleries and an art studio where she now teaches her own painting classes. She gives credit to the community that not only allowed her to thrive, but supported her every step of the way.

“I consider that not just my only personal achievement, but the Nashville itself… It’s the biggest part of it.”

I smile as I contemplate the journey Olga has taken. When we chose to seek deeper joy and purpose for our lives, teachers and guides appear to support us with exactly what we need – a prompt, a “borrowed belief” or a permission to be free and courageous. And when we step into the life we are created for, we become community influencers, we uplift others and accept with gratitude that we are a part of a bigger picture.

On Off Sets Crowdfunding Campaign

FASHIONABLE FUND: On Off, a London-based non-profit showcase for emerging design talent, has set up a crowdfunding initiative to boost the financial backing of its spring 2016 show season, set for September in London.
The organization, founded by Lee Lapthorne in 2003, has launched an appeal via crowdfunding site Indiegogo.com, to raise 25,000 pounds, or $ 39,000 at current exchange. Depending on the size of the contribution that donors make, they can receive perks in return for their contributions, such as tickets and backstage access to On Off shows during London Fashion Week.
On Off is also spreading news of the crowdfunding campaign through Thunderclap, a platform that will allow it to blast information about the appeal through its supporters’ social media pages if On Off reaches a goal of 250 supporters.
At the same time, the organization is making the transition to charitable status, meaning that On Off will gain access to a wider network of support and funding opportunities.
Lapthorne, who also serves as creative director of On Off, said that the On Off panel is currently selecting designers for its off schedule showcase to take place during London Fashion Week in September.

Shamballa Sets Eyewear Line With Larry Sands

KARL HAD IT FIRST: Danish brand Shamballa Jewels is making its entry into eyewear in collaboration with Larry Sands, the eyewear guru behind Chrome Hearts.
The line had hardly hit the Parisian concept store Colette in Paris when Karl Lagerfeld bought a pair of shades and wore them on Tuesday at the Chanel couture show.
The line consists of 15 models with prices ranging from 900 to 24,000 euros, or $ 990 to $ 26,465 at current exchange, the latter for the 24-karat gold model with two pavé beads and sapphires.
“The eyewear idea came when we met Larry Sands [the distributor of Shamballa’s jewelry Stateside since 2013.] Then when we got into the analysis, we saw the growth potential of the [eyewear] category,” Shamballa chief operation officer Peter Normann explained to WWD.
While it’s giving the license for eyewear out to Sands’ Malibu, Calif.-based SL Luxury Group, Normann said Shamballa Jewels plans to remain focused on its core jewelry business. “Hopefully it will be a nice license income. We hope eyewear will allow us to increase awareness to the brand,” Normann said.

It is a balancing act between opposing forces in me and around me. One minute, I delight in New York for the opportunities of spontaneity it provides, but the next minute, I detest it for that same spontaneity or rather, that trait of so quickly lifting you on a high, and then bringing you down with some irritating disappointment, like a delayed commute on the downtown 2 train.

So, why am I here? Why are you here? Is it because we have so many forces, foods, friends and flings to which to say “yes,” or “no” to? To love or hate?

It’s connection.

I came to New York nearly six years ago. I was a bright-eyed and Central Park squirrelly-tailed freshman at Barnard College with the goal of connecting to the artist within me. I wanted to learn all the techniques with which I could best connect internally with my body to then connect personally with my audience. As I focused on this goal as a dancer, I was reminded that as human beings — and not just New York human beings, but as human beings — we seek to and have the power to connect with our bodies, our movements, our words, our voice, our song and any other expression we can create.

After graduating from college in 2013, I chose to say, “yes!” to all the human connections I had made and “no!” to my disappointment at not receiving the dance call backs I had hoped to receive. I, alongside my friend, Tamrin Goldberg, gathered various artists we knew and started a collaborative dance company. I don’t want to give New York the credit for the creation of my company, since it doesn’t deserve it (can you tell I am in one of my hating New York minutes?), but it’s on-the-line-ness did give a lot of impetus to its birth. An artist, whether dancer, musician, actor or singer, uses his or her body to communicate. My dance company, The Rhythm Encompassing Every Sound (TREES) joins these languages in innovative collaborations performed throughout New York City. I seek to bring together these individuals and to create connections of artistic communication while establishing opportunities for artists to speak their voices, in any form, to any audience.

Since August 2014, TREES has connected musicians and dancers who don’t always unite creatively, as they collaborated in dance and music for three performances at venues such as The Bowery Electric and the now-closed Spike Hill. In turn, these collaborations have connected with audiences in a more informal and unconventional manner. Because we are all New Yorkers, behind the music and the movement is that strength and yearning to connect that nests inside. You and I have that urge, that inner pull to connect with others that brought us here and keeps us here.

That’s the buzz and the effervescence that pulses the summer haze when you walk down Broadway towards Columbus Circle. It makes living here that constant conflict, both exciting and tiring. Numerous connections call to us each day, and it is making the choice of which ones to take or expand as individuals and which ones to not take for the sake of guarding our space that moves us. We are on the line of fighting the urge to push through the waiting commuter peers around us on the platform line versus connecting with them, because who knows what that man with his red Beats and Herschel backpack, or the American American floral dress-wearing bleach blonde, could add to your life?

Connecting with others through this decision has caused me to appreciate the yes and the no… the love and the hate. Yes, I am on the line constantly, emotionally and literally, on this island I call, home, but it is the decision I make in the now either way that takes me off the line and into one direction. Seize the now.

I am grateful for the connections I have made, am making in the now, and will make in the future. I may be living on the line each day in New York, but there is no one line that I have to take, and I’m hoping the one I take is not delayed.

First Edition Of ‘The Hobbit’ Sets Record Price For J.R.R. Tolkien’s Novel

It didn’t come from the mines of Erebor, but it’s definitely worth a fortune.

A first edition copy of “The Hobbit” sold for £137,000 (nearly $ 210,000) at a Sotheby’s auction in London earlier this week, more than doubling the previous record for a copy of J.R.R. Tolkien’s first novel.

The book had been given to one of his former students, Katherine Kilbride, in 1937. The Guardian notes that Tolkien inscribed it with a poem in Old English, which roughly translates to:

“There is many a thing in the West-regions unknown to me, marvels and strange beings, a land fair and lovely, the homeland of the Elves, and the bliss of the Gods …”

Tolkien inscribed very few copies of the novel upon publication, Sotheby’s said. Other lucky recipients included close friend C.S. Lewis, author of the Chronicles of Narnia series. Take a look at the book below.

Les Art Décoratifs Sets Fornasetti Exhibit

UNDER THE INFLUENCE: Piero Fornasetti may not be a household name, but his impact on the fashion world is indisputable.
On March 11, the first French retrospective of the artist’s work opens to the public at Les Arts Décoratifs, sponsored by Valentino.
“His work continues to be very important in the creative world,” said Olivier Gabet, museum director of Les Arts Décoratifs, who co-curated the exhibition with Barnaba Fornasetti, the artist’s son, who continues to design in his name.
“When you look at certain designs by Valentino or Dolce & Gabbana, there is a respect for his work,” Gabet continued. “It’s still seen as something current and inspirational.”
“Piero Fornasetti: La Folie Pratique” groups together more than 1,000 of the multi-talented artist and interior designer’s works, including scarves, furniture and his famous plates featuring the face of opera singer Lina Cavalieri in the museum’s main hall.
The exhibition was co-produced with the Triennale Design Museum in Milan, where it showed last year, and runs in Paris until June 14.
For the occasion, Fornasetti has created two special collections of products, one to be sold in the boutique at the museum and a second, inspired by French national symbol La Marianne, to be sold in L’Eclaireur.
