Grailed Extends Beyond Secondhand Shopping

“I see too many tweets about kids getting their phone taken away because they are using Grailed,” said Arun Gupta, a lanky 29-year-old who speaks as if he’s being timed for speed.
Gupta, who studied physics at Yale, is the chief executive officer and cofounder of Grailed, the men’s resale site that launched in 2014.
Last week, Grailed’s Twitter mentions were particularly pointed. The e-commerce site released an update to its iPhone mobile app and there were a few glitches. Users were upset about a missing “back” and “done” button, the inability to add pictures to a listing and not being able to send messages to other users.
App glitches that prevent customers from purchasing or selling product are a problem, but the mentions, which ranged from obnoxious to highly concerned, were indicative of Grailed’s connection to its user, who is typically male, between ages 17 and 35 and has a penchant for streetwear and high-end designers. The site isn’t as omnipresent as, say, Instagram, but it’s quickly become a resource and daily attraction for a demographic that most retailers and brands are trying to win over.

Skies Slowly Brightening for Retailers Shopping Las Vegas Men’s Shows

LAS VEGAS — The fourth quarter wasn’t pretty for most retailers. Pre- and post-election angst, unrelenting price promotions, pressure from aggressive online players and a distracted consumer all contributed to a rough end to 2016.
But retailers aren’t about to roll over. To fight back, they’re scouring the market for new brands and hot trends that will move the needle. They’ve also learned that it’s not just about offering men the latest in ath-leisure or technical tailored clothing. Today’s customer is seeking unique experiences and merchandise with an authentic story that will allow them to create their own unique style — and make a statement.
Trade show operators are also shifting their focus in the face of this new reality.
Case in point: Aaron Levant, founder of Agenda, upped the ante on experiences at his trade show this season by featuring more cash-and-carry than ever before — Generation Cool, a vintage store based in Tucson, Ariz., set up a lively booth for shoppers. Levant also created an area where brands, some that don’t wholesale, were able to design their own booth. The space felt more like an art fair than a trade show.
“It’s about experiences and community,” said Levant, who last year helped

Your Guilt-Free Guide To Last-Minute Holiday Shopping That Won’t Kill The Rainforest

By Philip Rothrock
This story is cross-posted on Ecosystem Marketplace

Have you seen Gucci’s retro “Jackie” bags, patterned after one of Jackie Kennedy’s favorites?

They’re not only lovely, but they’re made of “deforestation-free” leather.

That’s a pretty big deal, because cattle ranchers are chopping forests by the football field to produce beef and leather, which is one reason agriculture generates almost 30% of all greenhouse-gas emissions worldwide.

In the past decade, scores of companies have committed to delivering “deforestation-free” leather, and some are already making good on their promises, while others seem to be making an honest effort to do so.

But there’s a new front opening, as Canadian boutique owner Cathy Reid recently found after receiving a holiday shipment of nightgowns.

“Some of the nighties are classic cotton flannel,” she wrote on her blog. “Others are silky fabrics, soft and cozy, perfect for the cooler nights in November.”

But then a customer read the label, and found they contained something called “rayon“, which Reid soon learned is a “cellulosic fiber” made of trees.

Such fibers are more common than you’d think, and they’re supposed to be more environmentally-friendly than cotton, that ravenous vampire plant that sucks the life out of soil.

That eco-friendliness, however, is questionable – and you, as a conscientious consumer, have the power to find the answers.
2016-12-18-1482072520-1389589-TimberPulp.PNG

Seven companies have committed to improve their sourcing of wood fibers for fabrics, but none have reported progress. Here is how that’s reflected in one Supply Change profile.

The “Big Four” Deforestation Commodities

Logging for timber and pulp – which includes cellulosic fibers – is the third-leading driver of deforestation around the world, and cattle ranching – which generates leather – is number one. These, together with soy and palm, comprise the “big four” forest risk commodities responsible for most of the world’s tropical deforestation – and until recently, it was nearly impossible to know if your holiday shopping was contributing to the problem.

That started to change when manufacturers like New Balance and Louis Vuitton, as well as retailers like Inditex/Zara and C&A, started promising to chop deforestation from key commodity supply chains. Then NGOs like CDP (formerly the Carbon Disclosure Project) started rating companies based on their commitments. Last year, the Forest Trend’s Supply Change project started tracking the progress that companies report toward achieving those commitments – providing in the process a fascinating glimpse into the complex, interlocking global supply chains that stretch around the world, involving cattlemen and loggers, as well as subsistence farmers and indigenous people who harvest the commodities we buy as leather, linen, and lipstick.

Keeping Tabs

Supply Change monitors hundreds of companies from around the world and across the industrial spectrum, but just 26 of these are shoe and apparel companies, and only 22 of these have promised to reduce their impact on the world’s rainforests.

That’s roughly 85% of the companies profiled by Supply Change in this sector, and almost all of those have made more than one promise – meaning that the 22 companies have generated more than 40 pledges.

Good – right?

Kind of.

Fourteen of those pledges apply to packaging – which many companies (and everyone who recycles) has committed to doing right – while just seven of them apply to clothing made with wood fiber fabrics.

By contrast, 16 apply to leather.

Those differences are no coincidence: environmentalists have been campaigning for recycled packaging since the 1960s, and many are just now waking up to cellulosic fibers. Things can, however, move fast – as we learned with leather.

2016-12-18-1482072780-4508714-DCShop.jpg

Responding to the Critics

In 2009, Greenpeace built a campaign around evidence connecting deforestation in the Amazon with cattle products sold to many large public-facing brands. This set off a ripple effect among buyers and suppliers alike, and New Balance immediately committed to stop buying shoe-leather from suppliers in the Amazon biome. ASOS, Coach and Eram Group followed a few years later.

On the cellulosic fiber front, an NGO called Canopy launched the Fashion Loved by Forests campaign, and scores of retailers and manufactures vowed to steer clear of wood products from ancient and endangered forests.

Those consumer-facing companies, however, are at the mercy of suppliers, and Canopy says that the ten largest suppliers, responsible for about 75% of global supply, are just beginning to set and implement their own sustainability commitments. Fortunately, the two largest, Aditya Birla and Lenzing, are close to wrapping up their first desktop audits of global operations. They make up around 35% of global supply and received highest scores in Canopy’s first update on viscose producers and forests.

Frustratingly, companies are only reporting progress on about half of commitments for companies in every sector tracked by Supply Change, and clothing retailer Inditex/Zara is one of those that hasn’t reported any measurable progress on its clothing commitment so far – perhaps because it’s waiting for suppliers (like Lenzing) to provide traceability.

The Design Cycle

When clothing companies decide to purge deforestation from their supply chains, they face the same challenge that we, as individuals do: namely, where to begin? After all, very few apparel companies produce their own raw materials. Instead, they’re consumers themselves, and they tend to go through predictable stages of improvement.

First, they promise something along the lines of making sure that all of their leather is “deforestation-free” by 2020.

Then they scramble to find out where in the world their leather comes from – which involves mapping transactions between ranchers, slaughter houses, packing companies and finally traders.

At that point, they usually examine three strategies: move forward by avoiding purchases from high-deforestation areas, help iffy suppliers improve their practices, and/or look for alternate materials.

Each of these approaches break down further – some companies aim to restructure their entire supply chains, one supplier at a time, while others turn to existing certification programs. Stella McCartney brand products even use vegan leather.

A disturbing number, however simply go silent – and, indeed, of the 24 wood-related commitments tracked by Supply Change, only 11 have any reported progress. On the leather front, progress reports are available on 12 of 16 commitments.

Once they implement a strategy, they establish procedures for monitoring progress; and – if they’re serious – they look for independent third parties who can do it for them.

Tracing the Lace

Many companies, erring on the side of caution, only make commitments they’re confident they can achieve – like making sure commodities are traceable to the region, mill or tannery they came from, and ideally to the ranch or plantation. Even that, however, can be a monumental task.

Most of the apparel companies Supply Change tracks do intend to trace their leather supply, and a few, like

New Balance and Coach,   require all their suppliers to submit signed assurances that their cattle doesn’t come from the Amazon. Coach says its suppliers have done so.

Similarly, H&M requires signed partner agreements to ensure compliance with its Business Partner requirements for both its wood and leather commitments, and its going one step further for its commitment on cellulosic fiber by working with suppliers to make their own CanopyStyle Pledges.

That raises another question: can the suppliers be trusted?

Meeting the Dress Code

Scores of companies are embedding environmental and social issues into their procurement guidelines, and some – like Adidas – are hiring third parties to audit all direct suppliers and making it clear that non-compliance could terminate the contract. A few, like Puma (owned by retail giant Kering) are even providing funds to help suppliers meet their environmental standards.

Puma also publicly lists its top-tier suppliers, while multi-stakeholder initiatives like SEDEX, CERES, CDP (formerly the Carbon Disclosure Project), and IDH Sustainable Trade Initiative aim to help companies find meaningful ways of engaging their suppliers on a range of environmental issues and increasingly land use management.

Other initiatives go even further – and do so in ways that promote real change on the ground.

It’s Fashionable to be Certified

When companies abandon high-risk areas, they often fix their own problem but drive poverty and desperation in the places left behind, according to Rosa Maria Vidal of the Governors’ Climate and Forests Fund.

Certification programs, on the other hand, promote sustainable resource management by ensuring companies maintain minimum environmental and social industry standards.

Roughly 20% of all wood products are certified under either the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) or Program for the Enforcement of Forest Certification, but certification efforts only began to seriously consider woof fabrics

three years ago. As we saw earlier, only seven companies have committed to sustainably source wood fibers embedded in their clothes, and none of them have reported progress.

In leather, the certification of choice is the Leather Working Group (LWG), which audits companies to make sure their leather isn’t associated with deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon biome – making them, in essence, an audited version of the independent commitments made by New Balance, Coach, Eram Group and ASOS. Roughly half of all leather commitments are tied to the LWG, which has already audited more than 14% of leather production.

All of the companies building pledges on LWG certification are reporting progress, ranging from 15% for H&M to around 100% for Nike and Timberland.

These consumer-facing companies rely on LWG-certified tanneries like Couro do Norte, which in turn use lists of bad actors published daily by government agencies and non-profits to keep suppliers honest.

Brazil’s three largest meatpackers – JBS, Marfrig, and Minerva – also supply the leather sector, and they use the same monitoring systems while also publishing third-party audits of their procurement.

All of these efforts are helping to push these hidden supply chains out into the open, across all commodities, so that – hopefully – products like Gucci’s bag will become the norm rather than the exception that proves the rule.

What Can I Do?

Until that day arrives, you can follow the example set by Cathy Reid’s inquisitive customer and ask your own retailers where their clothes come from. Most probably won’t be able to answer, but those questions do filter up. Here’s a list to get you started:

  • Do any of your clothes contain cellulosic fiber or leather? Are there non-leather and cellulosic fiber alternatives?
  • Where does the leather for your purses, jackets, shoes, wallets, come from?
  • How about the forest fibers? Beware, many leather items say made in Italy or China, but this refers to where the products are manufactured, the cows may still be raised in the Amazon or other threatened landscapes.
  • Does your company have a zero deforestation policy(ies) that cover [cattle/leather] and [wood/clothing fibers]?
  • Has your company begun implementing its policy?

Take care this holiday season, and remember to read the fine print, because not all gifts may be as caring and thoughtful as you might think when their sources are tainted by deforestation and exploitation.

BACKSTORY: What do you get when you merge a film editor and a personal trainer? James Frank Club, a new online men’s store with an assortment of independent and artisanal brands. Cofounded by Jim Rubino, the film editor, and his trainer, Trevor Handberry, the site offers everything from suits and denim to bags, barware, grooming products and home goods. The idea for the business came after Rubino was frustrated with the duplication he found at the men’s stores around New York. Believing there had to be more guys looking for small, lesser-known brands, he broached the subject with Handberry during a gym session and asked for his help. “Trevor has a lot of fashion sense,” Rubino said. “I liked the difference in our personalities and thought it would be a good blend.” So Handberry set out on a “Google journey,” he said, to find high quality brands that were not widely distributed.

A New Survey Says Women Spend More Time Shopping Than Socializing

shoe-shopping-stocksy

There’s part of shopping that’s all about necessity—we all need household basics and food to eat after all. How much time do you think you spend browsing and buying? And, perhaps more interestingly, how much time do you think you spend on it compared to time you do other things? Like, hang with your ladies for a glass of wine and a spot of gossip?

Statistic Brain Research Institute has just broken down the average day in an effort to understand what takes up the majority of our time. Not surprisingly, sleep and work claim the biggest amount of hours (for the ladies, we’re averaging 8.76 hours of sleep and 6.66 of work per day; men work a little more and sleep a little less).

The number we didn’t see coming? Women shop more than socialize, logging 1.3 hours a day versus .73 hours of hang-time (even when you add in time spent on the phone or emailing, it’s still less). It seems a little surprising, but here’s the million-dollar question: what about when you’re shopping with a friend? Does that count as socializing?

Organic Cotton on the other hand is grown in certified pesticide-free and herbicide-free soil using organic farming methods, covered in the Global Organic Textiles Standard. 7 Wedding Gown Shopping Mistakes That Every Bride-to-Be Makes

Shopping for a wedding gown is one of the most exciting experiences you’ll likely have in your life. But, like any crucial task, it’s rife with the possibility of error.

The blunders I’m talking about, however, have little to do with the type of dress you buy (the shape, the style, and so on) and more to do with the overall process, which can be quite overwhelming. (This shopping excursion will be unlike any you’ve had before!)

While some of the following mistakes may sound like they could be avoided simply by having some common sense, I have often found common sense to be in fact the least common of the senses. Especially when you’re in the midst of wedding planning.

Since you already have so much on your mind by the time you’re ready to try on some gowns, here’s my advice for making your shopping experience as smooth as possible–and some insider tips on how to avoid the biggest mistakes brides make while trying to find their dream dresses.

1. Not wearing great undergarments. Certainly, you won’t purchase your wedding undergarments before you’ve chosen a gown, but you do need excellent support for the gowns you’re trying on to look great. (And if you are not sample size, as most women are not, an ill-fit will be exacerbated without them.) A well-fitting strapless bra is often key.

You also will be in and out of the gowns for at least 30 to 60 minutes and in-between you may stand there in nothing but your skivvies. So your undergarments should at least be clean and without tears.

2. Not wearing deodorant. I’m going to be perfectly frank: The excitement of the salon experience could likely cause more “shvitzing” than you typically experience. You don’t want to be nervous about sweating all over the gorgeous gowns. Plus, imagine the person before you trying on the same merchandise and stinking up the dresses you’re trying on. You don’t want to be that person.

3. Not having clean hair. This is another case of courtesy. Typically, you will try on veils with the gowns, but you may even just run into a salon on your lunch break and without a shopping buddy. Remember that every veil you try has been put on by many others and all you can hope for is that they were courteous and had clean hair, too. Pay it forward.

4. Ordering a gown in a projected size. Today, you may be five, ten or even twenty pounds bigger than your “ideal” wedding day weight. Your professional stylist, however, will try to dissuade you from ordering any size other than the size you would fit into today–and you should listen to him or her. A gown can always be altered to fit perfectly. But it will be a disaster if the gown arrives too small.

5. Buying a gown without knowing your anticipated heel height. It is always best to shop with a heel that’s the approximate height of what you will wear on your wedding day–and not just to see the general way a gown falls but for the sake of alterations. You want to make sure that if there is any intricate lace on the hemline, it won’t be compromised.

Often, a lace hem is separate from the actual lace on the skirt and you can request to send “hem lace separately” to avoid costly removal and adjustment in alterations. And, if the designer’s standard “hollow to hem” is too short for you to begin with, it is best to have the heel height right so that even the most experienced stylist doesn’t overlook this extremely critical detail. Human error can happen and it can really be a nightmare to fix later on.

6. Not having a budget in mind. This typically happens because the majority of brides have no idea what things cost, so it’s important to look at gown shopping as a perfect opportunity to educate yourself and ask questions. If you can add to your budget once you’re in the salon, great! But to try on gowns that are over-budget and risk falling in love–only to have to severely compromise later–will leave you feeling dissatisfied.

7. Not knowing the religious standards of the officiant marrying you. Often, we know that if a wedding is to be held in a church or synagogue there may be a dress code to follow. But if the ceremony is to be off-site, it is best to clarify any requirements with your officiant well in advance of the buying trip. This way, you can ask the stylist what ideas he or she might have if the neckline or sleeves on a gown you love are not quite right for your clergy.

Bosom-Boosting Bikinis: 5 Key Features to Look For When Shopping for Swimwear

When you’re stripped down to a bikini, it’s hard to hide much of anything. The pads, cutlets, and other little tricks ordinarily deployed to give a bust some boost pose a big challenge when a dip in the pool or the ocean seems imminent. But all hope is not lost! Certain cuts and embellishments can make your bosom look a little curvier.

bikini-bathing-suit-swimsuit-stocksy

Here are five key things to look for:

Structure: A formed-cup suit will help give breasts shape and a little bit of extra size (many options will also include some padding). If you know your day is only going to involve lounging and staying firmly on dry land, this style can easily be modified with the same silicone cutlets used for extra push-up in a bra.

Ruffles and frills: Fringe, curtains, and tiered material all add excess fabric and dimension, a plus when you want to fake a little bit of size (conversely, if you’re looking for a slimming anything, the first thing to go should be embellishment). Along with adding extra mass, the details serve as a distraction to slimness up top.

asos-pink-white-flower-bikini

A low-cut French style: Experts agree this style, with skinny straps attached like a traditional bra, is often the most flattering on small chests. Cuts can vary, but the spacing of the straps allows for the scoop to go super low, a dangerous dip for busty women, but perfect for making the most of smaller cup sizes.

A center tie: Whether it’s an ornamental bow or a design switcheroo, having ties that can be tightened at the center will help pull breasts closer together, creating cleavage. The opportunity to personalize the fit is also paramount for women with smaller rib cages.

A true string bikini: The trusty pick is a good one, since the moveable triangle pieces can easily be slid to the outer side of the torso, exposing your curves wherever they may be. The option to adjust to your bod is wise since a top with anchored pieces can often read as oversized on a small chest.

Why Tamar Braxton’s New Clothing Line Will Be Your Summer Shopping Obsession

Since Tamar Braxton first stole the spotlight on WE TV’s “Braxton Family Values,” the 38-year-old singer has snagged a spinoff reality show and became the host of daytime talk show, “The Real.” And just when we thought she couldn’t fit anymore on her plate, Braxton launched an eponymous clothing collection.

tamar collection

The Tamar Collection by Tamar Braxton, which debuted earlier this year, is the star’s first foray into fashion. The line’s body-con dresses, fitted blazers, jumpsuits, luxe track pants, and sexy stilettos align with Braxton’s high-end personal style, but thankfully lack the hefty price tags. Everything in the collection retails for under $ 160, so all the Tamartians (aka the devoted followers and fans) out there don’t need to go broke while trying to look fly.

Tamar Braxton Collection

Ms. Braxton stopped by The Huffington Post to show us the Summer 2015 collection and chat with us about her personal style, which celebrities she’d like to see in her collection and some of her most unconventional beauty secrets.

What’s your favorite look from your new collection?

It has to be the white bohemian look that I wore to the collection lunch event last night. I can’t wait to put that with a pair of shorts. It’s so versatile.

tamar collection

Are there any celebrities that you would love to see in your clothes?

First of all, I love Victoria Beckham. That would be amazing. J.Lo is one of my fashion icons too. Maybe [Beyoncé]. Rihanna. Everyone I look up to, fashion-wise.

Your personal style is fabulous and we know you wear a lot of designer clothes. But why did you want to make sure that your clothing collection was affordable?

Because I don’t always want to spend the coins on designer clothes. Thank God most of the time I’m able to afford the things that I want. But the people that watch us on TV and listen to my music, they can’t always afford that, and I want them to feel fabulous as well. I know when I put on a Versace outfit I’m like, ‘Yasssss, I feel amazing!’ So I want them to have that feeling when they put on the Tamar Collection. That’s why I work so hard to make sure that we have quality clothing at an affordable price.

tamar collection

Are there any beauty products or tips that you live by?

I don’t put a lot on my face because I’m so sensitive. Everyone things I’m crazy because after I wash my face with Dove — it’s the only soap I can use — I ice my face.

Seriously? How does one do this?

Yes, you must. I learned that from Bette Davis. It stings but it’s worth it. You cup the ice in your hands and hold it to your face for as long as you can. Sometimes you drop it but you’ve got to pick it back up. It takes down inflammation and tightens your skin. It’s amazing.

And what do you put on afterwards?

Jesus.

Hahaha! OK, well, how has your fashion and beauty regimen changed since becoming a mother?

I have no time for me, so my get-ready time is like 10 minutes. I have to throw on comfortable things that are still all-day wear. And I’m not just trying to say this about my line — but it’s the truth. I can throw on these vegan leather track pants, sandals, a jean jacket and kill it! I believe in two-minute outfits that are comfortable and still stylish.

You can check out more of the line at Tamarcollection.com. And make sure to click through the slideshow below to see Tamar’s eye-catching personal style.

Organic Cotton on the other hand is grown in certified pesticide-free and herbicide-free soil using organic farming methods, covered in the Global Organic Textiles Standard. This Pretty Much Nails What Holiday Shopping Looks Like From Inside Your Head

Get me out, get me out, get me out …

You’ve been trudging through the stores all day doing your holiday shopping. Someone smells. Is it you? *sniff* No, no you seem okay. Does that person work here? Let’s ask … nope, just wearing the same colored shirt as the employees. Well, that was awkward …

And it goes on and on like that! CollegeHumor pretty much nails the first person stream-of-consciousness on exactly how stressful it is to do your holiday shopping. Suddenly your online shopping cart is looking a little empty.

Black Friday and Cyber Monday Shopping Tips

2014-11-26-checklisttitle.jpg

It’s the biggest shopping season of them all, but Santa isn’t the only one who should be checking his list twice. If you were planning on shopping for an amazing holiday outfit or thoughtful gifts for friends and family? This is a great time to do it. However, a successful weekend of shopping is all about planning. It can mean the difference between the satisfaction of getting all your holiday shopping done a month in advance and waking up on Tuesday with a shopping hangover or buyer’s remorse. Here are 10 things to consider as you move into the weekend.

  1. What is Black Friday?
It’s the day after Thanksgiving. This year, that’s November 28th. The day is marked by major sales and discounts. It’s called Black Friday because the day puts retailers “in the black” e.g. making a profit.
  2. What is Cyber Monday? Before the internet, we only had Black Friday. People would wake up extra early to go shopping for deals. There was coffee involved. That still happens but Cyber Monday started as a day of online deals for people who don’t want to brave the crowds or cold on Friday. However, most shops have Black Friday sales online now too, so it’s worth checking out online deals early Friday morning.
  3. Which one should I shop, Friday or Monday? Here’s my advice. Some discounts go live Friday and some items will sell out. If you have your heart set on something and it goes on crazy sale Friday? Buy! If you are shopping in general, are flexible, and want the deepest discounts? Wait until Monday!
  4. What is this Small Business Saturday I heard about? It’s a day to support local businesses. Is there a small shop in your town you love? They might have great after-Thanksgiving sales too. Check them out because small businesses keep communities thriving.
  5. What makes a good discount? Because I’m a fashion blogger, I’ve had a sneak peak at many of the best deals in fashion during this year’s shopping weekend. Many of the discounts I’ve seen are 30-50 percent off. I personally wouldn’t accept less than this range. Like many others, I will be posting my favorite deals on my blog at the stroke of midnight on Friday.
  6. I am against the commercialization of holidays and this post offends me. I totally understand, however it still stands that this is a great time for deals. If you were going to shop anyway, this is a way to stretch your dollar. I personally don’t like the idea of shopping on Thanksgiving and think it’s perfectly fine to avoid stores that make their workers miss the holiday. Thanksgiving should be spent with loved ones, not fighting with a stranger over a BluRay player. Friday, Saturday, and Monday are more than enough, and you can do much of it from your home in your pajamas.
  7. I’m definitely shopping, what can I do in the meantime? Plan ahead. Who are you shopping for? Yourself? Friends? Family? First, decide on an overall budget and stick to it. Remember, the weekend should be about shopping smart.
  8. What’s a good Black Friday or Cyber Monday shopping strategy? Pull up your favorite shops and compare the deals. The internet is always open so Black Friday starts at midnight. If you find something you absolutely love, buy or risk it selling out. If you’re just window shopping, keep looking so you make the best choices. Keep notes of all purchases and expected packages. Don’t make impulse purchases. If you’re shopping in-store, bundle up and wear comfortable clothes and shoes. Be kind to others; you’re not going into battle. At the end of the day, it’s just shopping.
  9. Help, I’m scared to shop for clothes online! Know your measurements and use the size charts. If you are like me, you’ll be grabbing that extra serving of stuffing (my favorite) the evening before – and the morning after. So know your size before then so you can ensure a perfect fit.
  10. Stay Connected Follow me Instagram @pinklip or visit my blog, jaymiranda.com to get updated about the best Black Friday and Cyber Monday fashion deals of the year. Ready? Set. Shop!

15 Emotional Stages of a Black Friday Shopping Trip

You’ve got your list in your hand and you’re in a crowd of eager shoppers, armed with coffee and the holiday spirit. For you, Thanksgiving week is but a blip on your long, well-scheduled hunt for the best Christmas presents ever.

Black Friday in particular can be an emotional roller-coaster ride, from when you wake up until you’re happily wrapping gifts at home. In the spirit of making holiday shopping merrier, we’re partnered with Sears to take you through the emotional stages of a Black Friday shopping trip.

1. Am I Still Asleep? I Think I’m Still Asleep.

What’s going on? Why is it dark out? Where am I? A pumpkin pie-and-tryptophan hangover coupled with a 4 a.m. wake-up call can do a number on the psyche. You gaze at your pillow longingly … lovingly. But this is no time for weakness! Pull yourself out of bed, make a beeline for the coffee maker, and make haste. To the mall!

2. I’ve Got A Plan, And I’m Sticking To It

Just like Santa Claus, you’ve prepared your list and checked it twice. You have your plan, and it’s rock solid. You know exactly what you’re going to get, how much you’re going to spend, and you’ve even mapped out stores for the fastest routes. This is how it’s going to work: You’re going to get in and get out, and then have the Best. Nap. Ever.

3. I Am … Mildly Frustrated
car office space
You’ve arrived at the mall and it’s so packed with minivans that you must drive into a parallel universe to find a parking space. You keep your cool and welcome the opportunity for a brisk march toward our reality, the reality that is Black Friday.

4. Christmas Is In The Air, Christmas is Everywheeeeeere!

You finally get into the mall and you remember what this is all about. Christmas carols. Ornaments. The smell of evergreen pine needles. PRESENTS! You are feeling so holly-jolly.

5. Jackpot.

That too-expensive, vanilla goodness perfume that your mom desperately deserves is marked as 60 percent off. And, bonus, it comes with a new car! a complimentary tote bag. Oh, snap! Double-gift! Cross Mom off that list.

6. Oooh, Shiny Things…

A “SALE!” sign is winking at you from your favorite clothing boutique. Would it be crazy to take two minutes from your carefully planned itinerary to check out the racks? Isn’t Christmas about giving back to yourself, too? Besides, It’s getting cold, so it’s not unreasonable to say that you need that scarf-and-mitten set…

7. I’ve Totally Got This.

Ugh, this line. The upside? Extra time to regroup. While you wait, you consult a map to draw an even more efficient route, and you use your phone to reserve your sister’s present to shave off some time. You could teach a master’s course in multitasking.

8. I Swear I Wrote This Down…

How quickly everything crumbles. Your little brother — did he want the home jersey or the away jersey? was it the team’s quarterback or running back? is this guy even on the team anymore? There are far more options than you ever imagined. You look around frantically. Which one are all the other customers buying? Did he want the most popular one? Or is he more the “root for the underdog” type? You stand in front of the racks, paralyzed with indecision.

9. ::stomach grumbles::

You desperately need nourishment, but when you get to the food court, every line is spiraling around the corner. The tantalizing smell of pretzels, Thai food and pizza makes you faint with anticipation.

10. Aww, Babies! Kids! Christmas!

When you’re getting gifts for your little nieces and nephews, you seek solace in the piles of stuffed animals. You hug each giraffe, teddy bear and piglet to see which is the cuddliest. You feel that this is very important. Next thing you know, you’re stumbling into the picture-book section and get totally sidetracked flipping through the page of illustrations. Do they have chairs here?

11. Ohhhhhhh. No.

How could this have happened with your perfectly laid plans, all of your lists, and your map? You forgot that you pulled Great Aunt Louise in the Secret Santa and that you need something under $ 25 for the office Yankee swap.

12. I Deserve A Pat On The Back

You see across the way that soaps, candles, and hand lotions are BOGO (buy one, get one free for the uninitiated), and they come wrapped in pretty Christmas bows. Two birds, one store; you’ve settled both the office party and Great Aunt Louise. You nailed it. You are Black Friday royalty, so just give yourself the crown now.

13. Praise To The Mall Gods!
You’re sweating, shopping bags are making indents on your hands, arms and shoulders, but you spy a “gift wrapping station” sign. Praise the gods of the mall. They take everything off your hands, and with a little donation, they’ll even carry everything to the car, wrapped up all nice. Whatever did you do to deserve this?

14. Do You Mind If I Just … Lie Down Here?

Do you think if you tipped a little extra, the gift-wrapping attendant would also carry you to the car? It’s just a question.

15. I Am Content And Life Is Complete.

You made it to the car in one piece. The gifts are all wrapped and carefully stacked on your backseat. Just as you turn on the car, a radio station is playing, “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas,” and you sigh a breath of relief. “You know what?” you say aloud. “I will.”

Sears, home of America’s most trusted brands, Kenmore, Craftsman and DieHard, is making holiday shopping more merry with exceptional offerings for Shop Your Way members. In addition to conveniences such as free store pick up, Member Assist and Reserve It, members receive an additional 10% back in points on the first $ 500 of each qualifying purchase with a Sears credit card all season long.

The Lilaguide: Baby-Friendly Miami & FT Lauderdale, 2005: New Parent Survival Guide to Shopping, Activities, Restaurants and More.

"When Dr. Sears can’t help, "the lilaguide" can."-"San Francisco Magazine" "A great resource that’s long overdue."-"SF Weekly" "The definitive owner’s manual for families with babies and toddlers."-"San Francisco Downtown Magazine" Like they say, everything changes when you have a baby. That’s why "the lilaguide" has become the essential item on every new parent’s checklist. Most parents wish their baby came with some sort of user-friendly handbook. Luckily, babies come with a lot of excellent word-of-mouth advice from other parents and friends. In fact, we found that nearly every parent out there has a great piece of child-rearing advice, like which baby store is the most helpful, or which restaurant tolerates strained carrots on the floor. Someone, we thought, should write this stuff down. And that’s how, please pardon the pun, "the lilaguide" was born. Our guides are literally written by parents for parents, through thousands of volunteer surveys. It’s what happens when someone writes down all the parental wisdom, organizes it, calculates it and presents it in an easy-to-use format. Apparently a lot of other new parents appreciate the inside scoop provided by the lilaguide, because our little green-striped books are quickly becoming a staple item in diaper bags across the country. You’ll find us in bookstores, toy stores, gift stores and maternity wards. Not to mention at a whole lot of baby showers. We’re rapidly expanding into major metro markets throughout the country, making the lilaguide the only national guide of its kind.

How Prom Dress Shopping Is Especially Difficult For Plus-Size Girls

NEW YORK (AP) — Maria Giorno has nothing against long gowns with high waists and flowing fabric — dresses that are designed to camouflage curves on plus-size women.

But the New Jersey high school senior had no interest in buying a loose-fitting style for her senior prom, even though it was all she could find in a size 16 or so at nearby stores. So many stores, Giorno said, “never have anything that’s a little more sexy or a little form-fitting, or anything like that for my age.” Clothes shopping for plus-size teens can be frustrating in general, but shopping for a dream prom dress can be a tear-inducing, hair-pulling morass of bad design and few options — especially for girls who want a dress that hugs the body instead of tenting it.

“It’s like people kind of assume that’s what I want and that’s what I like. I’m 18. I really like the way the tight dresses look,” said Giorno, who plays roller derby and hopes to study music education in college.

She finally found one that didn’t make her look like a bridesmaid — or worse, mother of the bride — at a boutique: a V-neck black lace “fit and flare” style with an open back and pleats above the knee for dancing ease on her big night.

Consignment shops and organizations that collect donated prom dresses for girls in need also say they can’t get enough plus-size gowns. Shop owner Kristen Harris went on a mission to collect them after a teen left her store empty-handed and in tears. Harris was tagging stock at her just-opened Designer Diva Consignment Boutique in Abington, Mass., when a plus-size teen shyly approached the ball gowns.

“I said, ‘Hey hon, what size are you looking for,’ and she said 22, and that’s when I felt like someone had just kicked me in the stomach, because I knew I didn’t have anything that size,” recalled Harris, who desperately pulled some smaller sizes in stretch fabrics for the girl. Moments later, the teen was crying in the dressing room.

So Harris began begging on social media for plus-size consignment and hunted down her young customer through Facebook, offering a private appointment and free dress from about 40 she’d collected. “She was so sweet,” Harris said. “I just couldn’t get her out of my head.”

Operation Prom, which offers free donated dresses to girls in need in eight states, has also had to hunt for plus-size dresses. Noel D’Allacco, founder of the decade-old project, took in about 7,000 gently used dresses and new ones from corporate partners last year, but only about 700 were size 18 and up, she said. The shortage of donated plus-size garments forced her to purchase some.

“We are going crazy trying to get plus-size dresses,” said D’Allacco, in Bronxville, N.Y. “We have this problem, unfortunately, every year. A lot of times we get plus-size donations and they’re not appropriate for a 17-year-old. They’re for your grandmother to wear. It’s difficult.”

Online options for plus-size prom dresses have proliferated in the past decade. But shopping that way for an already difficult fit, along with restrictive return policies, can feel risky. Giorno was not comfortable searching for her dress online, yet many retailers carry few to none in stores and on trend for teens. Many designers don’t bother making them in larger sizes, prospective customers say.

Sixteen percent of women’s clothing sold in the U.S. is size 14 and up, according to the market research group NPD. But the plus-size women’s business has “pretty much been ignored by the big stores,” said Marshal Cohen, NPD’s chief retail analyst.

The shop in Pine Beach, N.J., where Giorno found her dress, called New York City Glitz, makes it a priority to stock trendy plus sizes. “There’s not that much made,” owner Cat Hutton said. “I have companies that I deal with that only carry up to a size 16.”

David’s Bridal, with about 300 stores around the country, estimates half of the company’s prom-worthy choices come in sizes 16 to 22, with interest in those sizes growing every year, said Marissa Rubinetti, a senior buyer.

“They do struggle. They may fall in love with something they see online and they don’t have the opportunity to try it on and buy it,” she said.

A decade ago, the company carried a fraction of prom dresses up to size 22, Rubinetti said. Southern stores, particularly Texas, have a higher demand, she said. Stephanie Mekhjian, manager of David’s Bridal in Fort Worth, Texas, estimated 20 to 25 percent of her prom customers wear sizes 18 to 22, including some who travel 100 miles or more to shop there.

J.C. Penney sells plus-size prom dresses online only and offers just three styles. Target does not sell, in its brick-and-mortar stores, dressier styles appropriate for prom in any size, but the company does sell them online. Other retailers restrict all plus-size clothing to websites.

“Manufacturers are starting to create more plus-size prom dresses but they are just not as readily available as traditional size prom dresses,” said a Penney spokeswoman, Sarah Holland.

Phyllis Librach in St. Louis, Mo., knows the heartache of the dress search as both a mother and a dress designer who specializes in plus sizes for special occasions. She started her business 10 years ago after her daughter, now 29, was that curvy girl in tears in search of the perfect prom dress. They finally had one custom-made after the teen refused to buy a white wedding gown and dye it for prom.

Librach now designs and manufactures her own styles, including prom dresses sizes 14 to 40, which she sells on her site, Sydneyscloset.com, and through about 125 boutiques. She started out in the business buying inventory from others, but switched to producing her own after contacting a company that planned to knock off a gown worn by Queen Latifah at an awards show.

“I wanted to place an order, a very nice order, and they said, ‘We’re not making the dress in any size larger than 14,'” Librach recalled. “I said, ‘Let me understand this, you’re going to knock off an evening gown worn by a plus-size celebrity and you’re not going to make it for plus-size women?’ So I got angry, I got frustrated and I said, ‘Damn it, I’ll make it myself.’ That dress sold out.”

Miserable Men Shopping Might Be The Saddest Thing On Instagram

It’s no secret that many men hate shopping. But if you had any doubt, just swing by your closest mall and take a look: Dozens of men, as far as the eye can see, slumped on couches and benches, surrounded by shopping bags, just… waiting. Looking miserable.

Misery finds company on Instagram with the account miserable_men. Photo after photo of anguished, abandoned dudes out shopping, from the grandpa falling asleep in the mall to the dad waiting outside in the heat with the stroller, will probably make you chuckle a little… and perhaps inspire some sympathy.

To all the men out there still recovering from the misery of Christmas shopping, know that you’re not alone.

Next time, instead of dragging him along…

What could be more mundane or less religious than shopping? Yet shopping asks us to choose our values and weigh the good in everyday terms. It also brings us instantly in contact with the myriad relationships and labor of people all over the world who have grown, harvested, or crafted the food, clothes, and other items with which we sustain and adorn our lives. Michelle Gonzalez, whose work on spirituality has lifted up the life practices of Latina women, explores the rich material on economic activity and relationships in the Christian tradition and the larger pertinence of our actions in an era of globalized economic interconnection.
