Justin Bieber’s Manager Says He Once Feared Singer Would Die from ‘So Much Crap in His System’

Scooter Braun says that he once thought Justin Bieber would die in his sleep.

The music manager, 37, opened up about the “What Do You Mean?” singer’s dark past in a wide-ranging interview on Van Lathan’s The Red Pill podcast.

“I thought he was going to die,” Braun said candidly about Bieber, 24, in the discussion released Wednesday. “I thought he was going to go to sleep one night and have so much crap in his system that he would not wake up the next morning.”

Braun explained, “There was a time where I would go to sleep almost every night, when he had the money to fly away from me, and I was worried every night that I was going to lose him.”

Braun said he tried to save Bieber by keeping him from his music. “That was the time where I was telling him he’s not allowed to work,” Braun recalled. “And he used to yell and scream at me. He wanted to put music out, he wanted to tour, but I thought if he did that, he would die. So I just refused. We weren’t making any money … I didn’t want him to work because I wanted him to get healthy.”

Braun says that Bieber, who is engaged to Hailey Baldwin, is now in a much healthier place, all thanks to Bieber’s own determination. “I think that he made a conscious choice for himself to change,” Braun shared. “It wasn’t until one day he woke up and said, ‘Hey, I need to talk to you. I don’t want to be this person anymore.’ He made the decision to change and actually put that into action. The result is who he’s become today.”

In March 2013, after a week in which Bieber was treated for shortness of breath mid-show and lunged at a photographer, a source told PEOPLE, “He’s wildin’ out. On a scale of hot sauce, he’s a mild, but his money is so hot, it can get him anything.”

The next month, police raided Bieber’s tour bus in Sweden and confiscated drugs.

Then, in January 2014, Bieber’s home was raided by police after he allegedly threw eggs at a neighbor’s house.

Weeks later, he was arrested in Miami for DUI. “Mr. Bieber made a statement that he had consumed some alcohol, and that he had been smoking marijuana and had consumed some prescription medication,” a Miami Beach Police spokesperson said at the time.

“The people close to him try, but he’s a mess,” an industry source told PEOPLE in 2014. “He acts as though he’s never heard the word ‘no’ and he thinks he’s God.”

RELATED: Justin Bieber’s Manager Scooter Braun Shows Off the Home Ellen DeGeneres Convinced Him to Buy

Speaking on Lathan’s The Red Pill podcast, Braun reflected on the scrutiny Bieber’s behavior received. “I think Justin is an extraordinary young man who has been given an extraordinary life, and because of that he cannot complain that he’s held to extraordinary standards,” Braun said. “He used to complain, he used to fight it, and that’s kind of what got him into a dark place.”

Braun continued, “But when he accepted his responsibility and took a hard look at himself and not what everyone else was doing, that’s when he owned it, and he got healthy, and he got better, and he made the choice to change.”

Ramona Singer Is ‘Swollen and Bruised’ After ‘Upsetting’ Car Accident in the Hamptons: Source

Ramona Singer is recovering after getting into a fender bender in the Hamptons over the weekend.

The Real Housewives of New York City star, 61, was heading east on Montauk Highway in her Maserati when she was involved in a four-car pileup, a source close to the star tells PEOPLE.

According to the insider, Singer was left injured in the accident and is “a little swollen and bruised” but recovering well.

“She was very shaken,” says the source. “It was very upsetting for her.”

A rep for the star did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment. Page Six first reported the news of the accident.

On Monday, Singer shared a photo of the backyard of her sprawling six-bedroom, six-bathroom Southhampton home — explaining that she was icing her injuries.

“It’s Memorial Day. Thanks to all who sacrificed,” she wrote in the photo’s caption. “I’m sorry I did not put out flags earlier in recognition of this important day but I had a accident and been icing non stop.”

Singer recently renovated her Hampton’s home, which she’s owned for nearly 23 years. She revealed the finished product to DailyMailTV while giving them her tour of the space, explaining that she originally only wanted to update her kitchen but eventually turned her sleek, bright new style to the rest of the space.

The whole project — which Singer designed and shopped for by herself — took only six weeks.

“You have to stay on top of it, and you have to really pressure everyone to get things done,” she told DailyMailTV. “I was on their a–! And you know what? It got done.”

Ramona Singer Explodes on Bethenny Frankel as She’s Disinvited from RHONY Girls Trip

Ramona Singer and Bethenny Frankel have been on opposite sides of a bitter feud this season on The Real Housewives of New York City, despite Singer’s multiple attempts to fix things and move on.

And in PEOPLE’s exclusive sneak peek at Wednesday’s episode, it looks like things between the two women go from bad to worse as Frankel disinvites Singer from the upcoming group trip to Mexico.

“I take it back — I don’t want you to come on the trip,” Frankel, 46, tells Singer during a cast dinner. “I don’t. I don’t want you to come on the trip.”

The move comes as Frankel and Singer once again spar — this time, Frankel getting revenge on Singer for criticizing her Skinnygirl business by attacking Singer’s business.

“You know what, don’t attack my business,” says Singer, 60. “I support my family. I gave half my money to my husband who I was married to for 30 years. You were only married for two. Talk to me when you’ve been married for 30 years!”

“My f—ing heart was cut out, my legs, my arms,” Singer continues, tearing up. “So don’t even tell me and try to compare your life to mine. Don’t. Don’t. Just don’t, Bethenny. Have more respect for me. Have more respect and more sympathy. It’s not always about you.”

Singer confesses: “This is what bothers me about Bethenny. You’re trying to maybe make up with someone? Well don’t say, ‘You did this to me, that to me.’ She has this hardass impression on, she still looks upset and angry and I don’t know what to do!”

So how does Singer handle being disinvited? Well in typical Singer fashion, she doesn’t accept it. “Fine, well it’s a group trip — I just won’t come to the tequila party,” she says. “It’s a group trip so I’m coming!”

Frankel appears to be cold-faced by Singer’s words and shoots back when Singer knocks her for dishing it out but not taking it. ”

“I can absolutely take it,” Frankel says. “I just took it. I’ve taken it every time, Ramona!”

But Singer isn’t done. “I don’t like being in this place with you,” she says, continuing to get emotional. “There’s a picture of you, me, and that I still have. I redid my apartment — I only have three photos. One with my daughter—”

Before she can finish, Frankel ends the chat. “The waterworks are not of interest to me,” she says. “You’re not having a conversation, you’re screaming.”

That only angers Singer more. “You, Miss Waterworks City, are telling me they’re not of interest to you?” she asks. “This is me, Bethenny. This is not about you. Why is it always about you?”

RELATED VIDEO: RHONY Star Ramona Singer Talks ‘Blacking Out’ During Berkshires Trip

Eventually Singer agrees to “keep my mouth shut.” But Frankel doesn’t think that will last for long.

“Ramona is always scared about being rejected,” Frankel tells the audience. “So she comes to you and cozies up. And if you don’t give her exactly the response she wants, then she becomes a bitch. Then she goes from being a bitch to kissing your ass. So it’s going nice, to bitch, to ass kissing. And you always know you’re going to get to another one of those phases. They’re no real Ramona.”

The Real Housewives of New York City airs Wednesdays (9 p.m. ET) on Bravo.

Rubin Singer Fall 2017

Fall marks a season of expansion and experimentation for Rubin Singer. The designer is introducing a sizable collection of evening-inspired ready-to-wear — a natural evolution for his gown-enamored collections.
It’s safe to say his propositions are far from traditional fare. Known for his draping and often dramatic structures, separates took on similar features and a focus on variant corsetry. Take, for example, a red minidress with dramatic sleeves; on the rack alone, it looked like a piece of welded armor with warrior vibes. Or a long gold lamé jumpsuit with a pointed deep-V corset that served as a gateway piece for gown-leaning customers. Perhaps the piece that best fused Singer’s core design codes was a bright green corset top with pleats and a dramatic asymmetrical peplum hem; paired with a ballgown skirt it could be quite stunning, or easily made more grounded with tuxedo pants (of which Singer has a great pair done in a two-tone palette).
Additionally, Singer’s take on feminizing traditional men’s wear items stood as a highlight. A mini tuxedo dress with a built-in corset was a playful, sharply tailored offering.
For loyalists, there were signature silhouettes — most notably a silver lamé bias dress, a bright blue gauze gazar

Love Wins In Singer Dyllan Murray’s Heartfelt New Music Video

Singer Dyllan Murray wants his new video, “No Wrong Way,” to offer some comfort to members of the LGBTQ community who are concerned about their future under President Donald Trump

Directed by Guy Shalem, “No Wrong Way” explores both a mixed race, young gay couple’s relationship, as well as a budding romance between a transgender girl and a cisgender boy. Both couples appear to navigate some rough waters early on, but fortunately, love wins by the conclusion of the video, which can be viewed above.

In 2015, Murray, 18, teamed up with Meghan Trainor and producer Jason “Poo Bear” Boyd with the idea of creating a musical “Christmas gift” to his gay dads. During the collaboration, he decided that the inclusive message of “No Wrong Way,” which features vocals by Kira Kosarin, should resound beyond his own experiences.

“I never really thought about having a social rights song ― I never saw myself ever doing anything like that,” Murray told The Huffington Post. Still, he added, “I was always bullied because [having two dads] was not the ‘normal’ of everyone else. It made me different.”

Working with Trainor, who has been an outspoken advocate for the LGBTQ community in her own right, inspired Murray to channel his own feelings about queer issues into his music. “It was great to have her in the studio and collaborate, because [equality] is something that she really supports as well,” he said.

Citing Justin Timberlake, Maroon 5 and Justin Bieber as influences, the Los Angeles-based singer now “wants to start speaking out, and helping other people talk about themselves in general and be open with others.” To start, he’s decided to donate proceeds from the sales of “No Wrong Way” to GLAAD and The Trevor Project, an LGBTQ youth advocacy organization.

“It’s a scary time right now, and people are really worried about what’s going to happen next. There should be some sort of comfort,” he said. “People should still be able to open and not afraid to show who they really are.”

As painful as the next four years may be for the LGBTQ community, America’s young, up-and-coming artists certainly know what’s good.

Mormon Tabernacle Choir Singer Resigns Because Trump Reminds Her Of Hitler

A member of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir has resigned in protest over the group’s upcoming performance at Donald Trump’s inauguration, saying she could “never look [herself] in the mirror again” if she sang for the president-elect ― a man she likens to Adolf Hitler.

In a letter sent to the choir and later posted on Facebook, Jan Chamberlin explained that she has “spent several sleepless nights and days in turmoil and agony,” reflecting, praying and searching her soul.

“I’ve tried to tell myself that it will be alright and that I can continue in good conscience before God and man,” she wrote. “But it’s no use. I simply cannot continue with the recent turn of events. I could never look myself in the mirror again with self respect.”

By performing at the Jan. 20 ceremony, Chamberlin said, the choir will create the impression that it’s “endorsing tyranny and facism [sic].”

Chamberlin went on to compare the incoming president to the leader of Nazi Germany.

“History is repeating itself; the same tactics are being used by Hitler (identify a problem, finding a scapegoat target to blame, and stirring up people with a combination of fanaticism, false promises, and fear, and gathering the funding),” she wrote.

“I only know I could never ‘throw roses to Hitler.’ And I certainly could never sing for him.”

More than 200 of the choir’s 360 members are expected to perform at Trump’s inauguration, church officials earlier told The Salt Lake City Tribune.

But Chamberlin is not alone in her distress. Randall Thacker, a lifelong Mormon, launched a petition urging the choir not to perform for an “incoming president who has demonstrated sexist, racist, misogynistic, and xenophobic behavior that does not align with the principles and teachings of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.”

As of Friday, the petition had topped 24,000 signatures

Chamberlin concluded her lengthy letter thus: “My heart is shattered and broken … but my conscience is clear. And THAT, really is all that matters.”

Todd Starnes of Fox News blasted Chamberlin’s post on Friday, noting that choir members’ participation in the inauguration is strictly voluntary and describing her Hitler comparison as “not only intellectually dishonest ― it’s downright repulsive.”

Trump’s transition team has struggled to find performers for his inauguration. The Rockettes are scheduled to perform, but one member of the famed dance company has also spoken out. She told Marie Claire, “This is making our show, our job, our name, branded as right-wing. An extreme right-wing.”

Rubin Singer Pre-Fall 2017

Pre-fall was an exercise in logic for Rubin Singer. “For us, it’s a precursor to fall, and at the same time, it delivers in summer,” he said. “So, I divided it in two parts.” The collection’s straight-up summer supply was expressed in light colors and airy dress silhouettes: a gardenia print fit-and-flare, a graffiti printed style with a lace overlay and a multicolor lace dress with puffed sleeves stood out for being wearable and highly designed. The true fall portion of the lineup came in a predictably darker palette and was more structured than the breezy warm weather stuff, relying on the severe shapes for which Singer is known.
There were some nice surprises. A deep-V peplum dress with a double corset sounds tricky but was actually pretty sleek on the bodice. “It’s an important silhouette for me” said Singer of the double corset. And lest he be forever pigeon-holed as an eveningwear designer, Singer revealed that a new capsule collection will bow in 16 Neiman Marcus doors, with its focus on a range of ready-to-wear and daywear. “The demand for separates is definitely there,” he said.

PETA Taps Singer Joss Stone for Latest Campaign Protesting the Use of Exotic Skins

LONDON — People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals has tapped the British singer Joss Stone to appear in its campaign against the use of exotic skins for fashion.
Shot by Andrzej Dragan, Stone is portrayed with tears in her eyes and her body is painted to resemble the skin of a crocodile.
The release of the images follows a series of actions taken by the organization to prevent practices in the alligator farms known for supplying Hermès-owned tanneries.
“We don’t need to steal animals’ skin for fashion, and we’re grateful that Joss has joined us in sending this message,” said Elisa Allen, PETA associate director.
After an undercover investigation, PETA exposed what it condemned as acts of cruelty to animals at two alligator farms in Texas. A video posted on PETA’s YouTube channel shows the alligators at the facilities being kept in severely crowded pits and being cut open live.
“I hope when people see footage of what happens to crocodiles and alligators killed for their skin to be turned into handbags, they’ll join me in leaving wildlife out of their wardrobes,” said Stone.
PETA filed complaints against both the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department in Anahuac, Tex., in June. The actions taken resulted in

23 Year-Old Jordanian Singer Songwriter Jaafar Smashes Into the US with His New Single ‘Sixteen’

2015-08-24-1440383051-8215970-Jaafar_Sand.jpg

Jordanian chart-topping singer-songwriter & producer, Jaafar, discusses his new single “Sixteen” and his upcoming debut album. Jaafar’s Website.

I wasn’t looking for a different type of music to listen to. My loyal readers know I love metal, hard rock, 80s, hip hop, rap and reggae.

Then pow. Jaafar, who is from Jordan, landed in my speakers. Now I can’t get his “Sixteen” song out of my freakin’ skull. “Sixteen” tells of a girl aged only 16 in a war torn area just dreaming for a better tomorrow and the hope of reaching her 18th birthday.

Jaafar is cute, too – you know, for a dark haired boy. 😉

Your much anticipated single “Sixteen” is on iTunes. What did it take for you to get your music on there?

I really just wanted to make my music readily available so I put it up on iTunes as well as most major online music stores and streaming services. The point was for the song to be easy to find, download, and stream. Getting paid for downloads really depends on several factors, like how much the store takes off the top and if you’re on a label or not.

What’s the difference between touring with someone else and funding your own tour? Which do you prefer? Tell us about the cities you have played and visited.

I think it’s any artists’ dream to headline their own tour. That’s the goal, at least for me. Opening for another artist or playing a festival is great too, though. That’s exposure to an audience that may not have ever heard of you or your music before. My favorite part of what I do is definitely performing live; it’s a big thrill. I’ve played in some incredible places and on some iconic stages around the world. Earlier this year I played at the Fonda Theatre in LA, which was amazing. I’m from Amman, Jordan so to play in the entertainment capital of the world in a venue with such great history is a big deal to me. When I saw my name on the marquee it was very surreal. My manager sent me a picture a couple of weeks later with the Rolling Stones name on the same marquee, THE ROLLING STONES, that’s crazy! Another memorable show that I’ve played was in the historic city of Jerash in Jordan last summer. I played on the North Theatre… that stage has been there since around 165 AD!

What is it about Miami that keeps you grounded, why did you decide to move there?

I moved to Miami originally because I had been working sporadically with a producer who was based there, and I felt that was a good way for me to get in to the music scene there. Also, I was accepted in to the University of Miami, so I went there to pursue my undergrad degree. Miami has been really great to me in many ways. I’ve been able to meet and work with a lot of talented people. Some of them, legends whose work I grew up listening to, and others who were sort of coming up in the Miami music scene at the same time I was. I was very proactive about making music and soaking up knowledge from the people I was working with during my time in Miami. I moved there in 2010, and in the short time I was there I really feel like I learned and grew a lot.

What is your day like in the studio when you are recording? Do you have daily routines such as voice warm-ups, certain work-outs?

I like to record in the afternoon. Otherwise, I don’t have any energy. I’m not one of those guys who can start a recording session at 11:00 PM. There are definitely some routines I have and little things I do, especially if I’m recording vocals. I’ll often go on complete vocal rest, cut out caffeine and dairy, and basically avoid anything that might irritate my voice. Most importantly though I try to just take it easy and avoid stressful situations, which is easier said than done!

Have you ever been stopped on the street by fans?

Let’s be honest, it’s always nice when someone comes up to you and is genuinely excited to meet you and talk to you about your work. People at parties and restaurants have come up to me to tell me they ‘love the music’ or ‘can’t wait to hear what’s coming next’ sort of thing. So far I’ve only had very positive and respectful interactions with people. It hasn’t got anywhere near the point where I can’t walk down the street without being mobbed though. There’s still a certain level of privacy I have and I enjoy that. If one day that is no longer the case, then that’s what I signed up for, and as long as people are listening to my music it’s all worth it.

What /who inspires you to do the music that you do?

With a lot of the songs that I’ve written for this album in particular, I was inspired or should I say affected by what’s going on in the world today. Lyrically and in terms of subject matter, there’s a lot of commentary on the state of humanity and the deterioration of society. It’s not all doom and gloom though, it’s important to always hold on to hope and I think the music portrays that aspect as well. Sonically, this album is a departure from my older material. Strangely enough though, I only now feel like I’ve stumbled upon ‘my sound’, which if I could describe in simple terms is a fusion of Middle Eastern and Western Pop-Rock sounds.

What did you do for a living prior to your music career?

I’ve always done music. I feel like it’s a part of my identity as opposed to just a profession. Before recording this album, I was a student at the University of Miami. I actually started recording the album while I was still at school. Throughout my time at school I was always making music and actually put out two successful singles in my country while studying in America. ‘Sixteen’ I would say is my first international effort.

Being from the Middle East and crossing over to the United States, what hurdles have you jumped through?

I wont lie and say that it was easy leaving Jordan. I’m still not entirely used to it to be honest. More than anything else, being away from my family, friends, and the city I grew up in was a big adjustment for me. Aside from that, being in the music business itself, I feel I jump though hurdles on a daily basis. There’s a lot of ugliness that comes with the beauty of making music.

How do you feel about your followers on that social media? How has the response from your fans help your music?

Honestly, it’s very weird to see a number on social media and believe that those numbers represent real people, even though they do. It’s great that people follow me and care what I have to say. The lack of real human interaction on social media just makes it all seem unreal to me though. When someone sends me a drawing they’ve done of me, or leaves a kind comment on my page that makes it a little more real. I really appreciate that sort of thing. The fact that someone takes time out of his or her day to connect with me is humbling.

What did it feel like the first time you were on stage in front of an incredibly huge audience?

It’s really hard to describe. It’s a high that is unparalleled and one that you don’t ever want to come down from. Watching people’s reactions and emotions while they enjoy your music and sing along to melodies and lyrics you’ve written is an addictive thing.

Tell us how you give back to the youth and the community, either here in the States or in Jordan.

Firstly I try to raise awareness through my music. I’m not into writing music about being in the club. “Sixteen” for example, is about children during wartime; Killed, left alone, misplaced… There is no greater injustice in the world. I also try, like anybody who can should, give back to any community I’m in. I try to donate things like food, clothing and toys to local charities whenever I can; my parents always taught me the importance of that. In today’s world I don’t think that’s enough though. I do feel like I could be doing more, and as a result I have been looking at different charities, not only on a local level, to get involved with.

Anything else you’d like to say?

Thank you so much for taking the time to talk to me! I’d like to ask anyone who hasn’t yet heard my music to please check out my current single “Sixteen”. To those of you who have reached out with such nice words, THANK YOU! You’re support and encouragement is not lost on me. Look out for new music soon and I hope to see you on the road in the not too distant future!

Teen Who Was Told She Would Never Speak Is Now A Talented Singer

This young woman has something to sing about.

Born with a birth defect, Amber Simone Chinn was not expected to breathe, much less speak, on her own. But now, the 19-year-old is a powerful singer, and a video of her performing has gone viral, WGRZ reported.

Chinn was born with craniosynostosis — a defect in which the joints between the skull bones close prematurely — which led to a procedure at the age of 6 months, from which she was not expected to fully recover, the news outlet reported. Chinn’s parents were told she would never talk, but she beat the odds, calling her recovery a miracle.

At a friend’s graduation party earlier this month, Chinn was caught on camera singing by the pool. The video of her performing “The Worst,” by Jhene Akio, was uploaded to Facebook and has received over 2 million views as of Tuesday.

“It’s hard to grasp,” Chinn told WGRZ. “I have confidence, but I never thought me sitting by the pool, a random video would be so viral.”

Now, the young musician is a student at SUNY Buffalo State and is working with local music producers on an original song. On her GoFundMe page to create a music label, Chinn cites her performance of “The Worst” as a “music video about women empowerment and the need to confront and walk away from domestic abuse.”

Last December, another young woman shared a small musical moment to address a larger issue. Single mom Kimberly Henson uploaded a video of herself singing Sam Smith’s version of Whitney Houston’s “How Will I Know” to her baby daughter. Overnight, she reached more than 20 million people on Facebook alone, WLTX reported. In January, she released an original song called “Tiny Hearts” to share her experiences as a single parent.

“I may have taken a different path and missed little things here and there,” Henson told The Huffington Post. “But coming home and being a little person’s superhero means a lot of more in the end.”

Spanx CEO Jan Singer Talks Rebranding

“Nobody was talking about undergarments until Madonna wore a bra on the outside.”
That’s Jan Singer, chief executive officer of Spanx, recalling Madonna’s iconic cone bra by Jean Paul Gaultier and suggesting it’s time to get the undergarment conversation going again. Why not put Spanx in the center of it?
In the 15 years since Spanx was founded by Sara Blakely to help women rein in their bulges, the brand, while showing good growth with an estimated $ 300 million to $ 400 million in sales, has been perceived as a tummy-tucking commodity, and more often as the butt of a joke than a fashion statement. There’s also the sense that the shapewear company needs to get on firmer footing, amid rising competition from intimate, ath-leisure and active labels.
But since joining the company in July, Singer, formerly Nike’s corporate vice president of global apparel, has begun reshaping the Atlanta-based firm and its identity. She has reorganized 80 percent of top management with a slew of hires; redirected the product teams to put as much weight on fashion and comfort as on function, and fomented what she called a “consumer-centric” company culture.
In an interview on the game plan, Singer said she’s moving the Spanx brand

’80s Singer Tiffany Reveals What Could Have Been Her Stage Name And Why She Posed For ‘Playboy’ (VIDEO)

Only a handful of stars are well known by simply one name. Madonna. Prince. Cher. And, as fans of 1980s teen pop music would be quick to point out, Tiffany.

Three decades ago, Tiffany rose to fame with such hits as “Could’ve Been” and her famous cover of “I Think We’re Alone Now.” But long before the single-named celeb sold four million copies of her debut album, she was just 10-year-old Tiffany Darwish singing in bars in Nashville.

“I wasn’t really allowed to be there, so it was a quick little get-up-and-do-a-little-jam,” Tiffany tells “Oprah: Where Are They Now?” in the above video. “Nobody really wanted to give me a record deal. They were kind of like, ‘Come back when you’re older.'”

A few years later, Tiffany met George Tobin, who would become her producer, and her career as an artist was starting to take shape. The first order of business? Choosing her name.

“They were going to call me Tiffany Williams at first. My last name, Darwish… that’s just not acceptable!” she says with a laugh. “I kind of just said, ‘What about just Tiffany?'”

Then 15, Tiffany embarked on tour of shopping malls across America, where her sudden popularity soon created total chaos. “When it got to be bigger than life and people were actually being shoved against barricades and it wasn’t safe and we were actually being shut down, I actually started crying,” she says.

After her debut album hit No. 1 on the Billboard charts, Tiffany felt pressure to continue that momentum. “The next album, you’re rushed in the studio to re-record something and get it out there as soon as possible,” she explains. “It kind of lost some of its charm.”

She continued putting out albums, but never quite had the same commercial success as her initial release. Tiffany’s music career went through a few more ups and downs over the next several years. As she matured and evolved as an artist, Tiffany later became determined to shed the “teen queen” image that came with fame.

“I think I’ve always been put in a box, that I’m Tiffany, the girl from the mall tour,” she says. “Then I did Playboy.”

In 2002, Tiffany posed nude for the magazine, to the shock of many. But, as the 43-year-old wife and mother now explains, she had several clear reasons for doing it.

“I was actually going through a divorce — it rocks your world. It takes your confidence away,” she says. “[Posing for Playboy] was a quick confidence-booster. And, it was shock value.

“Everybody wants to talk to me,” Tiffany continues. “If I can turn that into music and go, ‘Yeah, remember that little thing I do…?’, it works.”

Tim Hauser, Manhattan Transfer Founder And Singer, Dies At 72

MESFIN FEKADU, AP Music Writer

NEW YORK (AP) — Tim Hauser, the founder and singer of the Grammy-winning vocal troupe The Manhattan Transfer, died Thursday from cardiac arrest, band representative JoAnn Geffen said Friday. He was 72.

Hauser founded Manhattan Transfer, who released their debut album in the early 1970s and launched hits such as “Operator” and “The Boy from New York City.” They went on to win multiple pop and jazz Grammy Awards. Their critically acclaimed album, 1985’s “Vocalese,” earned a whopping 12 Grammy nominations.

Alan Paul, Janis Siegel and Cheryl Bentyne — who joined in 1978 and replaced Laurel Masse — rounded out the foursome.

“Tim was the visionary behind The Manhattan Transfer,” they said in a statement. “It’s incomprehensible to think of this world without him.”

Hauser first formed Manhattan Transfer in 1969 with Erin Dickins, Marty Nelson, Gene Pistilli and Pat Rosali. They disbanded and Hauser met some of the band’s new members as a taxi driver in New York City. He met a conga player while driving who introduced him to Siegel and he also met Masse while driving.

Hauser was born in Troy, New York. He is survived by his wife Barb Sennet Hauser, his son Basie and his daughter Lily.

Manhattan Transfer will continue their upcoming tour despite Hauser’s death. Their next show is Oct. 23 in Manchester, New Hampshire.

Singer Simone Battle Of ‘X Factor’ Found Dead

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Girl group singer Simone Battle was found dead in her West Hollywood home, authorities said Saturday.

Battle, 25, gained notoriety through performances on the television show “X Factor.” Her five-member band — G.R.L., originally a reboot of the Pussycat Dolls — had been signed by mega-hit maker Dr. Luke. Battle was found at home Friday, according to Los Angeles County Coroner’s Department Lt. David Smith. No further details were released. An autopsy was expected Sunday.

In a written statement, G.R.L.’s record companies RCA and Kemosabe called Battle an exceptional young talent and human being.

The group was featured on rapper Pitbull’s hit song “Wild Wild Love” earlier this year. Battle told The Associated Press in July that the collaboration gave the group a platform to launch its debut single, “Ugly Heart.”

Pitbull “has so many hits and he’s really done a great job … showing us the ropes,” Battle said. “This was the first time that we heard ourselves on the radio together.”

Bobby Womack, Legendary R&B Singer, Dies At 70

Bobby Womack, a colorful and highly influential R&B singer-songwriter who influenced artists from the Rolling Stones to Damon Albarn, has died. He was 70.

Womack’s publicist Sonya Kolowrat said Friday that the singer had died, but she could provide no other details. With an incomparable voice few could match, Womack was a stirring singer and guitarist in his own right and a powerful songwriter whose hits like “Across 110th Street,” ”If You Think You’re Lonely Now” and “I Wish He Didn’t Trust Me So Much” captured the imagination of future stars in rock ‘n’ roll and R&B.

“He had a style that nobody else could ever capture,” longtime friend, gospel singer Candi Staton, said in a statement. “I loved him and I will miss him so, so very much.”

Womack’s death comes as something of a surprise. Though he was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease two years ago and overcame addiction and multiple health issues, including prostate and colon cancer, recently, he seemed in good health and spirits when he performed earlier this month at the Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival.

He told the BBC in 2013 the Alzheimer’s diagnosis came after he began having difficulty remembering his songs and the names of people he had worked with.

And there have been many. The soul singer cut a wide path through the music business as a performer and songwriter in a career that spanned seven decades. Womack was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2009, long after he’d lost his fortune and his career to addiction.

He spoke of kicking his substance abuse problems in a 2012 interview with The Associated Press and all the friends he’d lost to drugs over the years.

“I think the biggest move for me was to get away from the drug scene,” Womack said. “It wasn’t easy. It was hard because everybody I knew did drugs. … They didn’t know when to turn it off. So for me looking at Wilson Pickett, close friends of mine, Sly Stone, Jim Hendrix, Janis Joplin, and I can go on and on and on, and I say all of them died because of drugs.”

According to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame website, Womack was born in Cleveland, Ohio, and sang gospel music at a young age, performing with his brothers in The Womack Brothers. Under the influence of gospel and R&B legend Sam Cooke, who signed the group to his personal label, Womack moved into secular music. In the early 1960s his group recorded “It’s All Over Now,” which was covered and by the Stones and became the band’s first number-one hit.

His songs have been recorded by multiple artists, and he played as a session musician in Memphis in the 1960s.

Albarn and XL Recordings president Richard Russell helped Womack regain his career with 2012 comeback album “The Bravest Man in the Universe.” The album was a departure for Womack, full of electronic music and beats. But it was lauded by critics for a simple reason: That distinctive voice of his still brought chills.

“I don’t think he ever really thought that he would do anything again,” Albarn said of Womack in March. “Watching his rehabilitation and watching his ability to confront new material and new challenges was nothing short of miraculous at the time, and he still today continues to battle his demons and his illness. But he’s a beautiful person and when he opens his mouth and that voice comes out, it is something that is somehow touched by God.”

Herb Jeffries Dead: Jazz Singer And Actor Known As ‘The Bronze Buckaroo’ Dies At 100 (VIDEO)

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Herb Jeffries, the jazz singer and actor who performed with Duke Ellington and was known as the “Bronze Buckaroo” in a series of all-black 1930s Westerns, died of heart failure Sunday morning at a Los Angeles hospital. He was 100.

His death was confirmed by Raymond Strait, who worked with Jeffries on his not-yet-published autobiography titled “Color of Love.” With a mellow voice and handsome face, Jeffries became familiar to jazz fans, but segregation in the film industry limited his movie career. He scored a big hit with Ellington as the vocalist on “Flamingo,” recorded in 1940 and later covered by a white singer, the popular vocalist Tony Martin.

Among the other songs he did with Ellington were “There Shall Be No Night” and “You, You Darlin’.”

“The camaraderie in his band was like a bunch of guys in college,” Jeffries recalled in the book “Off the Record: An Oral History of Popular Music.” ”Ellington had a knack for developing talent and stars. … He was more like a father to me than a boss.”

Jeffries has been described as the only black singing cowboy star in Hollywood history and, more recently, after the deaths of Gene Autry, Roy Rogers and others, as the “last of the singing cowboys.”

Sometimes billed as Herbert Jeffrey, he starred in four Westerns aimed at black audiences from 1937 to 1939: “Harlem on the Prairie,” ”Two-Gun Man From Harlem,” ”The Bronze Buckaroo” and “Harlem Rides the Range.”

As The New York Times noted, the low-budget films (produced by a white man, Richard C. Kahn) are “notable less for what’s in them than that they exist at all.”

Jeffries starred as Bob Blake. The films featured his horse Stardusk, the vocal group the Four Tones, and comic relief from prolific character actor Mantan Moreland. Among the songs: “I’m a Happy Cowboy,” ”Get Along Mule” and “(Got the) Payday Blues.”

“The Bronze Buckaroo” was recently revived on a DVD release called “Treasures of Black Cinema.”

Jeffries “did something outrageous, and then rode off into the sunset,” actor-director Mario Van Peebles told People magazine in 2005. “He did us proud.”

Jeffries remained active as a singer into his 80s and 90s, touring and putting out the 1995 CD “The Bronze Buckaroo (Rides Again)” and following it up in 2000, with “The Duke and I.” Among the honors that came his way late in life was a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, dedicated in 2004.

“I don’t believe in age,” Jeffries told The New York Times in 1995, when he was appearing at a local club. “I believe this magnificent thing we have on our shoulders can help you evolve,” he said. “In jazz, we keep going. There’s no such thing as retiring, or being retired, so you never feel unwanted or useless. And that keeps your body vital.”

He was born in Detroit to a racially mixed couple, referring to himself in a 2004 interview with The Oklahoman as “an Italian-looking mongrel with a percentage of Ethiopian blood, which enabled me to get work with black orchestras.”

He lamented the days touring in the South when he was with Earl Hines in the 1930s. Black audiences were made to stand separately off in a corner and not allowed to dance.

“I don’t think anybody was thrilled about the conditions, but if you wanted to advance and develop you couldn’t show anger,” he said.

He made light of the covering of “Flamingo,” too, recalling he joked with Martin that he knew Martin had copied him because “you made the same mistake in the lyrics that I did.”

Jeffries told American Visions, a publication on African-American culture, in 1997 that he was inspired to seek backing for the cowboy movies after seeing a black boy crying because other children with him “wouldn’t let him play cowboy. But in the real West, one of every four cowboys was black.”

But he had no plans to star in them himself, he said, until the search for a suitable actor-singer-rider came up short and he embarked on a crash course on lasso handling and other Western skills.

Strait said Jeffries recently had several surgeries that “just wore him out.” He added that Jeffries “believed in one world and one people and was one of the most generous people I’ve ever met. He was always funding something or doing something for kids.”

Jeffries is survived by his fifth wife, Savannah; three daughters; and two sons.

EmiSunshine, Child Singer, Belts Out ‘Blue Yodel No. 6’ (VIDEO)

No, this isn’t some kind of trick (at least as far as we can tell). That really is a young girl belting out Jimmie Rodgers’ “Blue Yodel No. 6” with a voice that sounds much older than her 9 years.

The little girl with the big voice is EmiSunshine, and she can do more than just sing. She plays ukulele, banjolele, mandolin, kazoo and even some piano — and if that’s not enough talent packed into a very small package, she’s also a songwriter.

In one tune, “Black Sunday ’35,” EmiSunshine writes about the Dust Bowl of the 1930s.

“I didn’t have anything to do with that song except playing on it,” her dad Randall Hamilton (seen behind her playing bass in the video above) told The Daily Times earlier this year. “That melody, I think that’s her main gift in songwriting: to come up with these crazy-cool melodies that work with very simple chord progressions. It sounds like avant garde jazz, like there’s more chords and it’s more complicated than it really is.”

EmiSunshine released a disc of 18 songs earlier this year, and wrote or co-wrote 16 of them.

“When I come up with a melody, I just put some chords together, and it turns into a song,” EmiSunshine told the Daily Times.

But that doesn’t mean she can’t put her own spin on a few classics. Along with “Blue Yodel No. 6,” EmiSunshine also performs Johnny Cash’s “Folsom Prison Blues,” and her Facebook page features a few gospel tunes such as “Amazing Grace” and “Will The Circle Be Unbroken.”

The Tennessee girl counts Dolly Parton, Emmylou Harris and the Dixie Chicks among her influences. For more information about this up-and-comer, check out EmiSunshine’s YouTube page.

Old Photo Of Katy Perry Surfaces, Shows A Budding Singer Pre-Fame

It is sometimes easy to forget big stars were once unknown, ordinary folks trying to break into the business. Take Katy Perry, for example. The most-followed celebrity on Twitter who’s topped charts and conquered stages, Perry was once a plain-looking (albeit beautiful) young woman with a guitar.

A Reddit user by the name of ciphershort uploaded a photo to the site Saturday morning (Feb. 15), explaining: “My roommate used to hang out with Katy Perry. Tonight he busted out this photo.”

Well, we must admit, we’re not used to seeing Perry, now 29, like this:

If anything, we’re better accustomed to seeing her like this:
