5 Years Later, Newtown Victim’s Sisters Put Letters in Her Stocking for Santa to Take to Heaven

The Christmas season — a time of giving and joy, of twinkling lights and family celebrations — is still hard for Alissa Parker, five years after her daughter Emilie, then 6, was killed along with 25 others in the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre.

“The truth is, every year when I open up those box of decorations and ornaments, it is really tough,” Parker tells PEOPLE in an interview to mark the anniversary of the shooting that cracked open the community of Newtown, Connecticut.

Each holiday she is surrounded by memories of the Dec. 14, 2012, attack — as well as of new Christmas traditions that her family focuses on, keeping Emilie in their hearts.

“This was what the moment frozen in time was like and these were the things that were out. I have to train myself to balance that with the fond memories and the new memories we are creating,” Parker says. “I don’t feel like I should try to forget the hard ones, but I do want to make sure I balance that by focusing on good things.”

• For more about the Sandy Hook anniversary, subscribe now to PEOPLE or pick up this week’s issue, on newsstands now.

In their countdown to Christmas each year, Emilie would keep track of the family’s Advent calendar.

“We have these little boxes that have a piece of the Nativity scene and every day you open up, and Emilie had written the numbers down on the pieces of paper that we used to wrap the boxes,” Parker says.

“It stopped the day she died. I still have it exactly the way it is.”

Emilie’s stocking is hung again this holiday season — it’s where her younger sisters, 3 and 4 years old when she died, and her parents leave their letters for her in heaven.

“Every year, the girls write a letter to Emilie about their year and we write a letter to Emilie about her year and we put it in her stocking, and the idea is that Santa will take it and deliver it to Emilie,” her mom says. “The idea is to take a moment to reflect: How has my year been and what would I tell you?”

“It’s pretty emotional for me. It’s pretty tough,” she says. “But I find it pretty therapeutic to let that out and so I keep them and I created this book that I keep the letters in.”

On Christmas morning, Parker says, inside Emilie’s stocking “is always a gift that Emilie would want you to enjoy.”

“One year we put art supplies in there for the girls and another year we put in picture flip books of the day they were born. … One year we put in a necklace with a picture of them with Emilie,” Parker says. “We try and keep that tradition alive where it’s a way to make her a part of the event.”

Parker’s family moved to the Pacific Northwest following the Newtown shooting, a change that “really normalized again and it made us blend in a little more.”

“That has been a large contributor to our being able to process things and being here again has lifted our spirits, because I don’t have all the triggers that I did when I was living there,” she says.

At the same time, the family doesn’t work to keep their thoughts away from the child they lost.

“We are very faith-driven, and we try to be organic about the way we approach Emilie and her story so that when questions come up or memories come up, we welcome them and don’t run away from them,” Parker says. “But at the same time we try to be conscious about balancing it with our kids and what they are experiencing right now and making sure all of it is very natural and organic.

“For us that has worked,” she continues. “I didn’t want her name to feel taboo.”

Quickly bonded in her grief to another Sandy Hook mom, Michele Gay, whose daughter Josephine was also killed, Parker cofounded the nonprofit Safe and Sound Schools as well as the Emilie Art Connection, which, she says, “allows us to remember Emilie in a fun way that captures her personality.”

Of her work with Gay on SaSS, which provides “highly specific” information and security preparation tips to communities nationwide, Parker says, “We focus on the positive and the beautiful things. It’s not that we ignore the hard things, but it’s just not in our nature and I think Safe and Sound Schools is a reflection of that.

“Our tactics are not to use fear or to scare you into school safety but to inspire you and give you tools and make you feel empowered to do it.”

“We are a unifying force,” Parker says, “just like our girls were.”

Teen Pranksters! Watch Joel & Aaden Gosselin Hatch a Plan to Scare Sisters During 13th Birthday Camping Trip

The Gosselin girls get an old-fashioned camping fright during the sextuplets’ 13th birthday celebration.

In an exclusive clip of Monday’s Kate Plus 8, the boys devise a plan to scare their sisters instead of following mom Kate’s instructions to get ready for bed.

“We had an off-camera discussion of you’re going down, you’re getting ready for bed, blah, blah blah,” she explains. “And evidently when they went down they instead formulated a secret plan to come and scare the girls; clearly unbeknownst to us.”

After the boys blast air horns outside of the girls’ glamping tent in their backyard, the ladies respond by shouting, “Attack!” — which did not please their mother.

RELATED VIDEO: A Lesson Kate Gosselin Had to Learn the Hard Way

“For me, it was the end of a long day and I was finally settling them into their beds after waiting for 305 girls’ showers, and then it was sort of starting all over again that they were running around.” Gosselin, 42, says. “It was fine but it was just like, this is going to be a late night. And it was.”

Emily And Haley Ferguson Might Be Taylor Swift’s Long-Lost Sisters

If you’re a member of Bachelor Nation, then you’re aware of Emily and Haley Ferguson, the identical twins who vied for “Bachelor” star Ben Higgins’ heart on Season 20 before trying to find love on “Bachelor in Paradise” Season 3. Although they walked away from both shows single, they will always have each other, which is why Freeform decided to give them their own reality series, “The Twins: Happily Ever After?” (following their memorable appearances on Higgins and fiancée Lauren Bushnell’s show, “Ben & Lauren: Happily Ever After?”).

“We’re living the life out in Las Vegas, but then [our mom] is sending us out, we have to leave the house, and we decide to make the move out to LA,” Haley explained of the show’s premise during a Build Series interview with The Huffington Post, adding, “Before that, we explore some different career options out in Vegas. We try mermaids, magicians’ assistants … sushi models.”

But what the twins should really think about doing is being Taylor Swift impersonators, because man, they look a lot like her.

“We get that a lot,” Haley said when asked about the twins’ resemblance to Swift. “We might be [her long-lost sisters].”

“I wish,” Emily chimed in.

“I wouldn’t be mad about it,” Haley insisted.

For now, though, the twins are sticking to their reality-star shenanigans and Instagram sponsorships as their day jobs, but might make another appearance on “Bachelor in Paradise” this summer if they feel it works with their schedule.

“If we got asked to go back to ‘Bachelor in Paradise,’ right now, we’re in such a good place and I’m really happy with everything that’s going on that honestly it’s something we wouldn’t want to do right now in this moment,” Emily said, “but we keep saying, ‘Never say never.’”

“The Twins: Happily Ever After?” airs Mondays at 9 p.m. ET on Freeform. Watch the full Build Series interview with Emily and Haley below.

These Sisters Sang The Heck Out Of Their Disney-Inspired Wedding Toast

Leave it to a couple of Disney fanatics to pull off a magical, musical wedding toast.

When Susie Kasteel married her husband Luke in Vancouver in July, her sisters Sarah and Naomi Carter performed a maid of honor speech set to the tune of a medley of Disney songs including “Be Our Guest” from “Beauty and the Beast,” “I’ll Make A Man Out Of You” from “Mulan,” “Can You Feel The Love Tonight” from “Lion King” and “A Whole New World” from “Aladdin.”

The bride’s response? “You crushed it!”

“Susie was smiling ear-to-ear during the performance, and we could tell she wanted to come up and join in,” Sarah told The Huffington Post. “You can hear her chiming in with background vocals during ‘Can You Feel The Love Tonight.’”

Singing chops run in the family. In fact, the girls’ mother was an opera singer.

“We sing all the time,” Sarah told HuffPost. “Growing up, music was a big part of our household. As young girls we would sing along to all the Disney classics ― we know all the words! Naomi and I were also both very into musical theater.”

The Disney theme was especially fitting for the toast given that the bride and her sister Sarah manage a company called Crowned Princess Entertainment, where they perform as princess characters for kids birthday parties and other events.

Because Naomi lives across the pond in England, she and Sarah had to do most of the speech planning over email. When Naomi was in town a couple weeks before the wedding, they finalized the lyrics and started practicing.

“It was tough to keep it a secret from our sister, so our practice time and locations were limited,” she told HuffPost. “We used the hour between driving from the ceremony and the reception location to practice. We were glad that the performance itself was the best one we had done!”

Watch the sisters’ enchanting (and entertaining!)  performance in the video above.

Body Language: Sisters in Shape, Black Women’s Fitness, and Feminist Identity Politics

In her evocative ethnographic study, Body Language, Kimberly Lau traces the multiple ways in which the success of an innovative fitness program illuminates what identity means to its Black female clientele and how their group interaction provides a new perspective on feminist theories of identity politics-especially regarding the significance of identity to political activism and social change. Sisters in Shape, Inc, Fitness Consultants (SIS), a Philadelphia company, promotes balance in physical, mental, and spiritual health. Its program goes beyond workouts, as it educates and motivates women to make health and fitness a priority. Discussing the obstacles at home and the importance of the group’s solidarity to their ability to stay focused on their goals, the women speak to the ways in which their commitment to reshaping their bodies is a commitment to an alternative future. Body Language shows how the group’s explorations of black women’s identity open new possibilities for identity-based claims to recognition, justice, and social change.

There are a variety of unique character prints in this collection; these prints include popular Disney characters Princesses, Cars, Fairies, Minnie and Mickey Mouse, Doc. Neighbors and Missionaries: A History of the Sisters of Our Lady of Christian Doctrine

Neighbors and Missionaries: A History of the Sisters of Our Lady of Christian Doctrine

The Sisters of Our Lady of Christian Doctrine community was founded in 1910 by marion gurney, who adopted the religious name Mother Marianne of Jesus. A graduate of Wellesley College and a convert to Catholicism, Gurney had served as head resident at St. Rose’s Settlement, the first Catholic settlement house in New York City. She founded the Sisters of Christian Doctrine when other communities of women religious appeared uninterested in a ministry of settlement work combined with religious education programs for children attending public schools. The community established two settlement houses in New York City-Madonna House on the Lower East Side in 1910, followed by Ave Maria House in the Bronx in 1930. Alongside their classes in religious education and preparing children and adults to receive the sacraments, the Sisters distributed food and clothing, operated a bread line, and helped their neighbors in emergencies. In 1940 Mother Marianne and the Sisters began their first major mission outside New York when they adapted the model of the urban Catholic social settlement to rural South Carolina. They also served at a number of parishes, including several in South Carolina and Florida, where they ministered to both black and white Catholics. In Neighbors and Missionaries, Margaret M. McGuinness, who was given full access to the archives of the Sisters of Christian Doctrine, traces in fascinating detail the history of the congregation, from the inspiring story of its founder and the community’s mission to provide material and spiritual support to their Catholic neighbors, to the changes and challenges of the latter half of the twentieth century. By 1960, settlement houses had been replaced by other forms of social welfare, and the lives and work of American women religious were undergoing a dramatic change. McGuinness explores how the Sisters of Christian Doctrine were affected and how they adapted their own lives and work to reflect the transformations taking place i

Mary Mackillops Sisters: A Life Unveiled

Mary Mackillops Sisters: A Life Unveiled

The incredible story of Sister Mary MacKillop, from nun to saint ‘It’s the nuns I remember. An oddity to outsiders; mainstream to any Catholic. Hardly a classroom was without one. They were young and in charge, and role models for the girls who looked up at them from the desks. They weren’t part of the clergy; they couldn’t take Holy Orders like priests. but they were leaders, career women, women in the church who had a role, an alternative authority, belonging to a community of convent life which, like their heavy clothing, separated them from everyday society. ‘ It was Mary MacKillop’s miracles of healing that led her to be canonised as Australia’s first saint, but perhaps her greatest and most important legacy to the world was the religious order she founded over a century ago. Mary MacKillop’s sisters – the sisters of Saint Joseph – have been teaching and setting up schools all over Australia and New Zealand since 1867, bringing education to those who could not afford it, regardless of their religion. In this fascinating collection of interviews, Anne Henderson reveals the inner lives of the sisters of Saint Joseph. Through their own words, the sisters reflect on their work, their vows of poverty, chastity and obedience, and what these mean in the modern world. Providing a fascinating insight into the lives of these inspiring and deeply committed women, Mary MacKillop’s Sisters is an invaluable social history and a fascinating read.
