John Elliott on Building Brand Via Social Media

TOKYO — As a child growing up in San Francisco, at about age 8 John Elliott decided he wanted to start his own company. After sketching sneaker designers in class, his mother encouraged him to send them to Nike. Surprisingly, he received a written response from the company, which serves as “hallowed inspiration” for his streetwear brand now that he has collaborated with the activewear giant — something that he dreamed of for more thanijkjkjmjmm 20 years.
In a Q&A session with WWD style director Alex Badia, Elliott discussed his brand’s evolution.
WWD: How was it to collaborate with Nike?
John Elliott: That was pretty incredible. I think being a kid that is basically a swoosh lifer, having the ability to now tap into both their heritage and their performance, it’s been a dream come true. They’re an incredible partner. I think 2018 will actually be our biggest year yet with them. We have a lot of projects in store.
WWD: Moving back a little bit, when and why did you decide to launch John Elliott?
J.E.: I had worked in the industry for about 10 years, and I was leaving one job and I moved to New York and from New York I actually ended

Celebrities Drive Social Media Mentions Amid Gun Control Protests

This weekend’s March for Our Lives gun control protests generated strong social media traffic, according to analytics firm Talkwalker, which tracked posts in a 24-hour period through to Saturday at 3 p.m. Eastern time.
Within that period, there were more than 2 million social posts related to the protests, and the firm noted that celebrities helped drive the bulk of the traffic. According to #NeverAgain, organizers of the protests, which was in response to a school shooting in Florida last month, there were over 800 separate events held with most kicking off at noon local time on Saturday.
In Washington, organizers estimated over 500,000 participants. Celebrities in attendance who spoke and performed included Miley Cyrus and Jennifer Hudson. In New York City, Paul McCartney spoke to participants, encouraging their cause, according to media reports.
Talkwalker said the top social post on Saturday, March 24 was from Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson with an Instagram post that had over 400,000 likes. By Sunday morning, the post had over 1.1 million likes.
“I’ll always stand for open dialogue and action – it’s the only way to ensure bad history doesn’t repeat itself,” Johnson said in the post. “When it comes to protecting our children, all bets are off

Hiss! Taylor Swift Teases Return with Yet Another Slithery Social Media Tease

Taylor Swift has returned — to social media, at least.

Three days after going dark on social media, the popstar reopened her accounts Monday morning, though the purpose remains murky thus far.

Swift shared a mysterious 10-second video on her social media accounts at 11 a.m. — her first post since her accounts were scrubbed on Friday. The distorted, silent clip appears to depict a snake tail (though some social media users also compared the image to a cat or dragon tail). Swift presented the footage without any caption. A second, longer clip — with another piece of the tail — went up at 11 a.m. Tuesday. In the latest post, which went up at 10 a.m. Wednesday, the serpent’s head was revealed.

The strange clips come as speculation swirls that Swift is preparing to release her sixth studio album and first full-length record since 2014’s massive 1989. Last Friday, she caused a fan frenzy as she removed her profile pictures from Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook and deleted all her posts from Instagram and Twitter. Rumor has it the new song may debut Friday, along with a music video, followed by an MTV VMAs appearance on Sunday in Los Angeles.

Swifties have been impatiently anticipating new solo music from the Grammy winner, who previously released a new album every two years.

Rumors have percolated that Swift may share a new song at 2 p.m. ET on Monday. Some have suggested that this timing was designed to coincide with the solar eclipse. (However, as of 3:15 p.m. EST, Swift had yet to share anything more.)

“Wildest Dreams” director Joseph Kahn retweeted the clip with a simple smiley face, then added, “In 30 minutes, as a show of power, Taylor Swift will blot out the sun.”

RELATED VIDEO: Will Taylor Swift Be Releasing New Album?

Aside from a high-profile trial in Denver against David Mueller, a former radio deejay host who was recently found guilty of assault and battery against Swift for groping her during a meet-and-greet photo session in 2013, the star has been largely under the radar.

A source told PEOPLE in May Swift — who wrote Little Big Town’s “Better Man” last year and released her hit song “I Don’t Wanna Live Forever” (with Zayn Malik) in January — was hard at work on her new music.

“She is very excited about her new album,” said the source. “She can’t wait to share with her fans later this year.”

Put your celeb and pop culture knowledge to the test and download PEOPLE and Zynga’s Crosswords with Friends!

The star told Vogue in 2016 she was “going to live my life a little bit without the pressure on myself to create something” and focus on some short-term goals, like learning how to make a “good drink” and getting CPR-certified.

Amarist Studio Aims to Spark Social Awareness With Refugees-Inspired Welcome Jewelry

WELCOME DISCUSSION: In these politically charged times, Amarist Studio will be making a statement with its Welcome Jewelry installation in May at Art New York.
The Barcelona-based creative agency was formed by the artists and designers Arán Lozano and Clara Campo. They will be showing the Welcome Jewelry for Social Good for the first time in the U.S., when the event starts May 3 at Pier 94, and runs through May 11. The earrings, bracelets, necklaces and pins are made of razor wire that has been cut, polished and plated with 24-karat gold and will be showcased in clear plastic packaging. The effect is meant to be like a mass-produced supermarket.
Campo said via e-mail, “With the Welcome installation in Art New York, we want to create an immersive space for the visitor, generating debate on the refugee crisis as well as empowering social responsibility. With the deconstruction of a border wall, followed by the transformation of its fragments into solidarity jewelry, we want to demonstrate how art and design can help change concepts, going beyond the theoretical to become active.”
The installation will be set up near the entrance to the art fair. The barbed wire is supposed to symbolize the barbed

This year, many are also honoring the spirit of International Women’s Day by participating in a strike, “Day Without a Woman.” Borne out of the Women’s March in January that rallied millions across the globe in response to President Donald Trump’s inauguration, the event encourages women to refrain from paid or unpaid work.

Is It Angels Who Protect Social Entrepreneurs? Because Nobody Else Does…..

“Four corners to my bed

Four Angels round my head

One to watch, one to pray,

And two to take all fears away!”

When I was a child I would recite this rhyme before going to bed. Those were the days when we would sleep beneath the stars. Sometimes clouds and trees would take menacing shapes in the dark. I would shut my eyes tightly and think of the Angels protecting me and be comforted and drift into sleep.

Now it seems the Angels are back again.

Life was tough indeed when I took a conscious decision to establish Operation ASHA. My aim was clear- that of providing health solutions to the poorest of the poor. Suddenly life changed. From a successful doctor in an upscale fancy private hospital I became a foot soldier trudging long miles in shanty towns and villages. My appearance changed. I went from stiletto heels to sturdy walking shoes. I started looking unkempt and shabby, initially a deliberately cultivated look to be accepted by those whom I serve, and later a natural consequence of the kind of work I was doing.

People around me changed too. Many laughed. All were contemptuous. Most couldn’t understand why I would throw away a good income to start an NGO. Others accused me of exactly the opposite thing- of being desperate to make easy money, for isn’t that the reason why one starts an NGO in the first place? With two conflicting accusations being hurled at me at the same time, I wouldn’t know whether I was standing on my head or my heels.

And as for the uncertainty! The less I write about it the better. Words are not enough to describe the trials and tribulations I went through. Starting a social venture is bad enough, starting it without a sound financial plan to ensure sustainability is the height of absurdity. And putting your own savings in a social enterprise is the biggest financial folly one could ever commit. I thought my savings would last 5 years. They finished in one, like water trickling from a hole in a bucket. I had plunged headlong into choppy waters without the fear of drowning. Each day I managed to stay afloat was a miracle.

When you are a social entrepreneur, life is all about extremes. You swing from one end on the pendulum to the other. From the depths of despair you go to such euphoria that you are walking with your head in the clouds. There are days when everything goes wrong. You get sleepless nights wondering where the next round of funding is coming from, your best guy has been offered twice the salary by a rival foundation, and some government officer somewhere has absolutely refused to let you work in his fiefdom. Other days- you wake up and find yourself on top of the world for someone somewhere has recognised your work and your worth. One day you are accused of being a crook and a thief, next day, blasphemously, you are feted by the media as the next Mother Teresa. In 2014, the Schwab Foundation and the World Economic Forum selected me as Social Entrepreneur of the Year. I found myself rubbing shoulders with the Who’s Who of society and the hoi-polloi at Davos. I haven’t looked back since then.

But at all times there is an all-pervading undercurrent of anxiety. Social entrepreneurs thrive on the adrenalin rush created by the see-saw that is life. You may be fully sustainable, yet you can’t get over the feeling that you are like the wandering mendicants of yesteryears with a staff in one hand and a begging bowl in the other.

In this topsy-turvy world, few things happen to keep you going. Patients recover. Results are there for you to see. Children get back to school. Treated TB patients get back their jobs, and there’s money for food and to spare. Miraculously, funds start coming in time. Those that scoffed at you and laughed with derision give tolerant smiles. There’s an occasional pat on the back, a kind word. You go to bed happy and contented and you sleep well, for the Angels are back and hovering over you. And you know they are there for you and will protect you as they have done since childhood. For nobody else will.

Don’t Quit Social Media

2017-01-17-1484680456-6848554-yxvkh7n8asojacobwalti.jpg

I’m back!

I spent nearly half a year without Facebook (had access to Facebook Messenger), Linkedin, Twitter and other social networks. No media as well, except financial outlets for work reasons. In other words, all this time I lived in digital abstinence and isolation.

The result? You tell me. I didn’t experience a bliss or found a deeper meaning of life. My happiness dropped, productivity stayed flat at best. I lost touch with reality and couldn’t separate my work from my personal life. I lost connection with my friends, motivation, and aspirations.

We all know it, but this experience drilled it into me once and for all: Humans are just wired to connect. Yet, in this technology-driven, globalized word, we interact in person less.

Social media and messaging apps won’t replace face-to-face interaction, but you want it or not, now that’s the way it is. It’s the new means of communication that will only take a bigger part of our lives as we move forward in this age. You have to embrace it.

The problem is not the medium but its addictive and toxic nature. For some reason – I’m sure scientists have already answered that – people get hooked on this thing really bad.

There’s also a lot of noise out there. The bulk of information is worthless and emotionally harmful. The intent behind most updates is just a self-seeking cry for recognition, praise, support, admiration, validation, which adds no value to your life.

But there are also people who broadcast beautiful things. Thoughts that inspire and challenge your perspective. Successes that drive competition in a positive way. Conversations that lead change. Personalities that put a smile on your face.

Why should I and you miss out on all of this?

We don’t quit the world because there are bad people out there. We ignore and avoid them. People on social media are the same, the medium is just different.

Isolation is no answer, that’s my main takeaway here. I’m sorry but that’s all I’ve got. There’s no point to quit social media entirely, just on principle. Just because some people say stupid things. That’s selfish, stupid, and adds no value.

Instead, mute the toxic noise in your feed and follow people who push you forward as a lover, a founder, a father, a human being or whoever you strive to be. Oh, and don’t engage in social networks during your peak productivity hours and you’ll be fine.

Social media gives you easy access. It’s you choice what and how much to take from it.

‘Hamilton’ Faces Social Media Backlash From Confused Pro-Trump Critics

There’s “Hamilton,” the hit Broadway musical seen by Vice President-elect Mike Pence on Friday. And there’s Hamilton, the Canadian city which has a theater donning the same name. One is @HamiltonMusical on Twitter; the other, @HamiltonTheatre

It’s not hard to see how right-wing supporters might confuse the two. After President-elect Donald Trump criticized “Hamilton” over the weekend for delivering a political message to Pence from the stage, supporters aimed dozens of angry tweets at the Canadian theater instead of the New York production.

“If they only had looked at our profile, it says Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, several times. That just goes to show something about hate-mongering on the internet and the lack of effort people put forward,” Riane Leonard, who handles the theater company’s Twitter account, told local news outlet The Hamilton Spectator.

“Hamilton,” the musical, covers Founding Father Alexander Hamilton’s role in the establishment of the United States and is comprised primarily of actors of color. After Friday’s performance at New York’s Richard Rodgers Theatre, star Brandon Victor Dixon, who plays Aaron Burr, voiced a message for Pence from the show’s cast and creator Lin-Manuel Miranda. Trump later called it “very rude” in his demand for an apology while Pence did not mind the speech at all.

“We, sir, we are the diverse America who are alarmed and anxious that your new administration will not protect us, our planet, our children, our parents or defend us and uphold our inalienable rights,” Dixon said.

Trump’s criticism of what he called an “overrated” show mobilized his followers online ― and offline.

Hashtags including #BoycottHamilton and #BanHamilton trended over the weekend, with supporters dredging up an insensitive, 4-year-old tweet by Dixon to wield as a morality critique of the production he joined in August.

The actor appeared on CBS This Morning Monday to defend his message.

“There’s nothing to apologize for,” Dixon stated, later adding, “Conversation is not harassment.”

During a Saturday performance of “Hamilton” in Chicago, a front-row audience member reportedly yelled profanities and political statements after the line “Immigrants ― we get the job done” in the song “Yorktown (The World Turned Upside Down)” and during another number, before being escorted out of the theater.

Multilayer Social Networks

Multilayer networks, in particular multilayer social networks, where users belong to and interact on different networks at the same time, are an active research area in social network analysis, computer science, and physics. These networks have traditionally been studied within these separate research communities, leading to the development of several independent models and methods to deal with the same set of problems. This book unifies and consolidates existing practical and theoretical knowledge on multilayer networks including data collection and analysis, modeling, and mining of multilayer social network systems, the evolution of interconnected social networks, and dynamic processes such as information spreading. A single real dataset is used to illustrate the concepts presented throughout the book, demonstrating both the practical utility and the potential shortcomings of the various methods. Researchers from all areas of network analysis will learn new aspects and future directions of this emerging field.

Invisible Stars: A Social History of Women in American Broadcasting

Invisible Stars: A Social History of Women in American Broadcasting

Invisible Stars was the first book to recognize that women have always played an important part in American electronic media. The emphasis is on social history, as the author skillfully explains how the changing role of women in different eras influenced their participation in broadcasting. This is not just the story of radio stars or broadcast journalists, but a social history of women both on and off the air. Beginning in the early 1920s with the emergence of radio, the book chronicles the ambivalence toward women in broadcasting during the 1930s and 1940s, the gradual change in status of women in the 1950s and 1960s, the increased presence of women in broadcasting in the 1970s, and the successes of women in broadcasting in the 1980s and 1990s. The second edition is expanded to include the social and political changes that occurred in the 2000s, such as the growing number of women talk show hosts; changing attitudes about women in leadership roles in business; more about minority women in media; and women in sports and women sports announcers. The author addresses the question of whether women are in fact no longer invisible in electronic media. She provides an assessment of where progress for women (in society as well as broadcasting) can be seen, and where progress appears totally stalled.

Women and Households in Indonesia: Cultural Notions and Social Practices

Critically examines the usefulness of the ‘household; concept within the historically and culturally diverse context of Indonesia, exploring in detail the position of women within and beyond domestic arrangements. So far, classical household and kinship studies have not studied how women deal with two major forces which shape and define their world: local kinship traditions, and the universalising ideology of the Indonesian regime, which both provide prescriptions and prohibitions concerning family, marriage, and womanhood. Women are caught between these conflicting notions and practices. How they challenge or accommodate such forces is the main issue in this book.

Reading Beyond the Book: The Social Practices of Contemporary Literary Culture

Literary culture has become a form of popular culture over the last fifteen years thanks to the success of televised book clubs, film adaptations, big-box book stores, online bookselling, and face-to-face and online book groups. This volume offers the first critical analysis of mass reading events and the contemporary meanings of reading in the UK, USA, and Canada based on original interviews and surveys with readers and event organizers.

The resurgence of book groups has inspired new cultural formations of what the authors call “shared reading.” They interrogate the enduring attraction of an old technology for readers, community organizers, and government agencies, exploring the social practices inspired by the sharing of books in public spaces and revealing the complex ideological investments made by readers, cultural workers, institutions, and the mass media in the meanings of reading.

How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Not Listen to Social Media Gurus

2015-08-26-1440608172-7573495-ScreenShot20150815at3.11.08PM.png

TWITTER IS THE MANSON FAMILY I NEVER HAD

The social media Guru who said “Twitter should be used in moderation” could also probably stop at eating one Cheeto, or even open their eyes while sneezing. It’s a mindless addiction that screams “try and stop me!”.

Now, assuming you’re like most of us on Twitter, you live in a bunker, and manifest symptoms of mild autism and megalomania. You also have an abiding need to get something pointless and stupid off your chest.

So seriously, how do you start? Which key launches the nukes? It seems an endless salad bar without the spit guard. Somewhere you can come back for seconds, gloriously naked under that trench coat, and of course, wearing wet shoes.

THE GENE POOL COULD USE A DEEP END

Not to harsh your Twitter mellow, but what do you naturally aspire to? Ghost of soapy Tyler Durdan? Bikini Model spokesperson? Do you happily lick donuts? Well all you have to do is just close your eyes and click your heels, and take a shot of ether and get in touch with your weird side. It’s all waiting for you on the Internet’s wild wacked west.

You can be your own fantasy. The only thing limiting you are your limitations, and even that can snowball uphill on this thing.

HOW TO START

So for kicks, the first thing you do is follow some profoundly respected celebrity account, because by gosh, you’re both on Twitter and now practically related in an inbred way. You even feel kind of chummy, so you say ‘Hi’ to a Hilary or Katy or Kanye or Fitty, then wait for a response, and wait, all the while slipping deeper and deeper into Nyquil-tini haze.

The good news is you’re not alone — We all got our taste for Nyqil-tinis much the same way.

(At this point, most Twitter virgins experience Twitter fatigue, and must pop Twitter viagra. Just kidding, there is no Twitter viagra. Meth. We use meth).

THE SECRET TO LIFE IS KEEPING THE HOT FUDGE HOT

So now that you’ve been rebuffed, repulsed and repelled, any rational human, medicated or otherwise, would go for the pro-tip. Time to check in with the social media gurus. Y’know, the Swami guys with folded legs, sitting on mountain tops just typing on their laptops — right? Well, social media gurus are the Internet’s bottom feeders: they’ll just bite you on the butt, and feed on your bottom.

It’s the blind leading the blind into an open manhole. Bungee jumping into a burmese tiger trap. The Third base coach waving the runner into a snowblower.

I freely admit an unabashed lusting to become one of them. They’re like the High Priests of some primitive idolatrous cult. Hanging out on the deck of a Temple, just shooting the breeze after a hard day’s flinging sacrificial virgins into the volcano, and fertility rites. You just know you want into that action.

But let’s face it, Twitter is the dog run of social media. Land mines everywhere. You’re bound to step into a simmering pile of tweeting faux pas. Thankfully, with its attention span of a Jello shot, and collective memory loss, it’s always just like shaking the etch-a-sketch clean.

So it begs the question: Do you really need the social media guru sagacity and wisdom?

Here are some of my favorite rules not to follow very closely:

1. NEVER FOLLOW/FOLLOWBACK BLINDLY, IT HURTS YOUR BRAND

Because on Twitter, we aren’t people, we’re brands, and anything we post or do online affects the people following us. So be very careful not to give a sh**. Follow indiscriminately. Hit your daily following limit. Go directly to Twitter jail.

It’s a numbers game, and you only miss 100 percent of the shots you don’t drink. So bottoms up!

2.DON”T OBSESS OVER YOUR FOLLOWER COUNT

Seriously?

Your follower count is the dipstick of your relevancy — if you’re down a quart, you might as well leave it in the shop.

Again, Twitter is a numbers game — no one knows what’s really going on, so it’s the only indicator of your “eating at the cool table” factor. I can’t stress enough the importance of this, and it justifies its accomplishment by the most ruthless means possible. Attending Moabite fertility rites with stomach flu. Shipping off your in-firmed Eskimo grandparents on an ice floe as an amuse-bouche for polar bears. Promising you’ll call after a date and you don’t. It doesn’t matter. It’s for the greater good, your greater good.

And by the same token, if someone is not following you back after three days, unfollow them. If you have the time, block them. And if you have more time, also stick knitting needles into the ears and nostrils of their voodoo doll

Although personally, I start with the knitting needles on Day 2.

3. DIRECT MESSAGE:

OR:

TWITTER IT’S ALL FUN AND GAMES UNTIL SOMEONE DM’s

Whoa! Seriously? Never DM anyone! Never! Not even to poison control after Bill Cosby roofied you with radioactive Polonium 210.

Twitter is like self-medication for a broad spectrum of interesting characters, from the lithium-addled, insomniac vampires, to the bi-polar narcoleptic dominatrixes. No one wants to get a direct mail from a barnacle with suction cups, and a prescription for an electro-shock bite stick. The kind of stalkerish nut job who needs your opinion on what color thong is appropriate for an afternoon wedding. (Note to the style challenged: it’s all good).

Especially if you yourself have a nagging conscience. Blocking a Twitter crazy conjures up guilty visions of sugar plum fairies dancing on the subway platform, just before they jump. So avoid DMs as if it were the plague with bad breath.

3. DO FOLLOW PEOPLE YOU VALUE

OR:

MANY ARE CALLED, FEW ARE CHOSEN, AND EVEN LESS RSVP

Very few celebrities will send the elevator of success back down to the basement for us methane-breathing troglodytes. Unless they’re extraordinary human beings like Jim Gaffigan, who is quite literally the Dr. Albert Schweitzer of Comedians — just a kind, generous, giving human being and utterly hilarious — no wrong answers. But sadly, Jim can’t field everyone, so you have to blaze your own trail, while avoiding self-immolation like a Vietnamese Monk on a bender.

4. RETWEET REGULARLY

OR:

“WHEN PEOPLE TRY TO RAIN ON YOUR PARADE… PEE ON THEIRS

Again-Seriously?

There is no honor among thieves, and no respect between Twitterers. Trust me, you will inevitably be disappointed, and the “Block” button will seem so wussy and ineffectual, especially compared with what you really want to do to them. Instead of RTing, just hit the ‘I told You So’ button.

This is so high school, that is, if you graduated from John Wayne Gacy High with degree in clown costumes. It’s lousy with fond memories of anti-social non-reciprocation: The old: ‘I’ll scratch your back, and you excoriate mine with a raclette swivel’.

5. ALWAYS USE ORIGINAL CONTENT

Esurance Backs Gay Marriage With ‘Equal Dreams’ Commercial And Social Campaign

Esurance is kicking off LGBT Pride Week with an all-inclusive commercial and social media campaign.

The auto insurance provider is releasing a video, #EqualDreams, in which children and gay teen guests at a June 13 wedding are asked to describe their own dream ceremonies. The responses are both inspiring and adorable.

“At my wedding day, all my friends and family and my doggies and my friends’ and family’s doggies and my cousin’s doggies…will be there, and it’s gonna be the best day of my life,” one tot proclaims. Another adds: “If my husband doesn’t like the cake, he will buy his own cake.”

The clip, which is being released ahead of what officials hope is a victory for same-sex marriage at the U.S. Supreme Court this month, takes a more bittersweet turn when one lesbian guest speaks about her own experience growing up.

Esurance Chief Marketing Officer Alan Gellman told The Huffington Post in an email that his company, which has supported LGBT Pride events since 2005, created the clip “to show, in an emotionally compelling way, our belief that all dreams should be equal.”

He added, “It’s not just a belief. As a modern company, we act on that belief through our products and insurance offerings.”

Rising Star Pico Alexander Talks Social Media, Bioluminescence and Taking Risks

2015-06-03-1433346089-8240349-ALEXANDERPICOBway.com.jpg

I met up with Pico Alexander at the Cafe at the Signature Theatre on the eve of his 24th birthday. He was taller than I expected with a thick head of hair that he hid under his fedora hat. Pico has a spiritual energy to him, with a look and demeanor that reminds me of a young Johnny Depp. When I make the comparison he smiles and blushes; “He was my favorite when I was a kid. I used to pause the dvd Edward Scissorhands because I was crying so much. I felt so bad for him! Like when he punctured the waterbed or tried to cut the steak. I love that guy. Thank you for saying that.” Sodas in hand, we sat down, with piano music playing in the background at the Cafe, and started chatting:

Where does the name Pico come from?
My grandfather started jokingly referring to me as Pico when my mom was pregnant with me. And then when I was born, they wanted to give me a serious name, so they named me Alexander. But nobody ever called me Alexander except for one teacher in sixth grade.

Growing up, you went to LaGuardia High School. What did you focus on?
I auditioned for music and for acting because that’s what my parents were breeding me to be. I played classical piano and trumpet for awhile. My mom has this fond memory of me getting into her car after the audition and saying ‘Mom, i’m going to be an actor’. But in reality I had been writing that in journals for years.

You are kind of a man of mystery. You aren’t very active on social media. You don’t use twitter or have an instagram account.
No social media for me.

Why’s that?
I think that I spent too much time comparing myself to other people and it didn’t seem very real anymore. All of a sudden you have more than a thousand friends and everybody is posting all the best things that happened to them. And it kind of unsettled me really. I started posting a status and waiting to get the likes. If I got the likes then I was validated as a human for that day and if I didn’t it was like “f***, nobody likes me”

Who is Pico?
I don’t know. I’m trying to figure that out. I’d be hesitant to give any sort of an answer because its always changing.

What would your friends say about you?
They would probably say I’m one of the most immature people they’ve ever met!

In what way?
I can be my share of selfish and uncompromising and loud and obnoxious and a bit of an asshole and definitely mean to my share of people. And not very empathetic. And these are the things that I’m working on now. It definitely took me awhile to realize that I’m not the center of the universe.

Did your off-Broadway show Punk Rock help in that way?
Sure, I think Punk Rock had an effect.

2015-06-03-1433348599-5262989-pico2.jpg

Let’s talk about What I Did Last Summer. Who do you play?
I play Ted. He’s a local boy, a Canadian. He can be a little bit of a rowdy influence and he’s a friend of Charlie, the protagonist. Charlie meets Anna Trumble who is a bit of an outcast and eccentric and she taps into his potential and tells him that he has a gift and he has to work on finding out what it is. She unlocks that for him and he goes and finds out there is more to life than what he originally thought.

Do you have a pre-show ritual?
We pretty much just lose it back there in the dressing room. It’s me, Noah Galvin, and Dan Weiner our drummer. We all share the dressing room, get hyped up, and listen to music.

I saw that you played a young Joe Carroll in FOX’s The Following. What was it like being on set?
The scene was a lot bigger beforehand. There was a fish in the scene and the character Doctor Strauss puts the fish on the table and its flopping around and the Doctor wants to illustrate to Joe that he’s enraptured by it. Which was super interesting because, by law, you are only allowed to take a fish out of water for 20 seconds at a time. So we had a dude standing by with a bucket who would constantly interrupt the scene and grab the fish and throw it in the bucket and take another fish and put it on the table.

I read online that you want to swim with sharks. Is that right?
Yeah, I’d love to swim with sharks! Sharknado. A bit of a metaphor for wanting to risk it all in a way.

What are some of your hobbies?
I’m writing a lot lately. And I’m very fascinated with my dreams. I’m taking a sober year this year. I had a crazy experience at the end of last year. I was away on a small island with my family and I swam in this bio-luminescent bay and thought – it’s not going to get any better than this – and on the spot decided to try a year of sobriety as a challenge. Because of that, my dreams are so vivid this year. So I want to really focus on that unconscious self this year and connect with that self and see what it is that I truly want.

Do you meditate?
I meditate a little bit. Not as much as I’d like to.

One question I ask everyone: What’s one thing you would tell your 15 year old self?
To slow down. Listen. Observe. Help people. Help them up not push them down. And to be honest. High school is a really tough time for everybody and we don’t really understand that at the time. Be honest about your fears and your shortcomings. And just be nice.

What do you like best about yourself?
That’s crazy. I never think about that. It’s so easy to get wrapped up in melancholy. I think I like my honesty. I’ll ask people questions that might be uncomfortable but will also put myself one hundred percent out there. I’d rather fail than be mediocre.

Is there anything that you want people to know about you?
No. He laughs. I’m always weary of putting anything in writing because it’s always changing. If I had to choose, I would want them to know that I’m loyal.

Do you have any favorite quotes?
I like the quote “It is written” from The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho. Because it means it is what it is and everything is what it is and that’s ok.

For tickets to see Pico Alexander in What I Did Last Summer at the Signature Theatre now thru June 7th, click here.

Social Media: The Next Generation of the Salem Witch Trials

Everybody’s heard of the Salem Witch Trails of 1692-1693, right? If you haven’t, you need to get your ass to a library right ASAP. Many history teachers use the Salem Witch Trials to teach their students about the dangers of what can happen when mass hysteria takes over communities. Most of us think when hearing these stories: “this is crazy, it could never happen in modern day.” But, with social media keeping us more connected than ever and Americans getting offended at nearly everything they read — it’s almost as if we’ve forgotten the lessons our history teachers tried to instill in us as children because the Salem Witch Trails happen everyday on our computer, we just don’t realize it.

This past weekend, my Facebook page was sent into a tailspin when someone in Alabama saw a t-shirt with an upside-down American flag on it for sale at a PacSun outlet store. Torch carrying Americans took to social media to express their outrage. With a thirst for blood not yet quenched, (it was a slow Memorial Day news weekend) people took to social media to all-but-destroy PacSun, anyone who wore their clothing and anyone associated with the brand. It was a witch trial of a different sort. I like to call it: “#tshirtgate2015.” Let’s take a look:

Salem 1692: Two girls begin rolling around on the floor, seemingly possessed. When a doctor can’t figure out what’s wrong with them (there is no physical evidence of illness) he jumps to the logical conclusion that witches have been f-ing their shit up. Because…what else could it possibly be?

Modern Day: Someone shopping in an outlet store in Alabama (I could make a joke, but that one just wrote itself), sees a t-shirt with an upside flag on it for sale at a PacSun. This outrages said shopper. They take a picture of it and post it on social media, expressing said outrage. Because there is literally nothing else horrible going on in the world today (black kids getting shot by cops for no reason, global warming, world hunger — no time for that!) the image goes viral. PacSun is ruining America with their upside-down American flag shirt. [An upside down American flag is a signal for extreme danger of life or property.] How could PacSun do this on Memorial Day when we are supposed to be honoring our veterans by getting blackout drunk and having a BBQ? WTF PacSun? WTF, indeed.

Salem 1692: Word spreads that two girls have been overcome by the power of witchcraft and other girls in town begin to say that they have been having similar issues. Soon thereafter, several of the towns most undesirable women (beggars, non-churchgoers and women of rival families of the girls who were original possessed) are arrested for witchcraft.

Modern Day: Word spreads that PacSun is selling a t-shirt with an upside down flag on it via social media and others begin to say that they too are offended by said t-shirt. Soon thereafter, several of the worlds most prestigious media outlets begin covering the story because a t-shirt with an upside-down American flag on it is by far the most disgraceful thing that has ever happened (today) and someone must pay. Meanwhile, somewhere in California the creators of House of Cards are probably chilling being like: “Um, an upside-down American flag has been our shows logo for three years and no one has said word one about it. Way to pick and chose, guys.”

Salem 1692: The women convicted of witchcraft are arrested and tried before a court of law. They really don’t stand a chance because in 1692 America, you can be executed for witchcraft based on the hearsay of a group of teenager girls.

Modern Day: PacSun is put on the stand and the judge, jury and executioner is the general public. They really don’t stand a chance because in 2015 America, you can have your life ruined or entire business crumble based on a biased group of people with loud mouths and nothing better to do.

Salem 1692: Many of the women convicted say they love the Lord, would never dance with the devil and have never practiced witchcraft. It doesn’t matter as the court has little-to-no evidence to convict them, so being practical, they send them to their deaths. On the flip, several of the women convicted throw their hands in air, give up and say “fuck it, I’m a witch.” Thinking they’ll be exonerated if confessing to witchcraft, they lie and say they’re witches. Well played ladies, but it doesn’t work. They too, are executed.

Modern Day: PacSun is put in a difficult situation. Apparently everyone fighting this social media war is either a direct descendent of Betsy Ross, a veteran or American flag aficionado and will not relent. This upside-down flag situation is the worst thing that’s happened in American history. Possibly worse than 9-11. If they don’t apologize, they will look like assholes. But this is 2015 and you’re damned if you do, damned if you don’t. Soon after #tshirtgate2015 starts, PacSun apologizes, basically saying, “we give up, we fucked up. Sorry, we’ll pull the shirt from stores.” But it’s not enough. It’s never enough. People are still pissed and call for an all-out boycott of PacSun. Why stop at accepting an apology when you can financially cripple a company and possibly put hundreds if not thousands of people who are just trying to make ends meet out of work? It’s not like you’ve ever done something wrong or made a mistake in real life and asked for forgiveness. Meanwhile, forget trying to put this amount of effort into fighting for equal pay for women — all affiliated with PacSun must pay.

Salem 1692: Mass hysteria reaches a fever pitch and the young girls begin claiming that everyone from infants to clergymen to the elderly are witches. Things have gotten out of hand then suddenly — it all stops. People cease claiming accusations of witchcraft and the townspeople return to their everyday affairs as if nothing happened.

Modern Day: Mass hysteria reaches a fever pitch. People are pissed. Social media statuses such as: “How un-American of Pac Sun!” “They should close all of their stores!” “I will never shop there again!” clutter Facebook and Twitter. Then suddenly — it all stops. People seemingly forget #tshirtgate2015 ever existed because the internet has made us all have the attention spans of five year-olds. However, instead of the good people of social media going back to their everyday affairs, they find something else “truly offensive” and begin complaining about that and the social media circle of life continues. Meanwhile, this is the most anyone has talked about PacSun since 1997, so hopefully their PR department can spin this to their benefit.

Guys, we simply cannot be outraged about inconsequential things on a day-to-day basis. It makes us no better than the two teenage girls who cried “witchcraft” because they wanted attention back in 1692. If everything we see and hear is deemed offensive, we are not only disrupting freedom of speech, we all also have some serious rage problems we need to deal with. Perhaps if we could channel that rage into something productive like fixing the environment, figuring out what to do with California before they run out of water or a better way to handle veteran affairs (everyone was crying “what about the vets?” when this whole t-shirt debacle was going down — how about not treating them like shit when they return from defending our country? They would probably appreciate that more than crying over a t-shirt) we could be in better shape as a country. Or, we could just find something a celebrity said, take it out of context and completely ruin their career. Really, either works.

I apologize in advance for any witches who were offended in the creation of this article.

Mark Dendy Explores Social Issues at Joe’s Pub

The Lower East Side has always been a playground for oddballs, creative types who diverge from Manhattan’s mold. It’s a quirky neighborhood filled with idiosyncrasies and secrets stuffed in blocks and buildings. These days, south of Union Square is trending, a wonderland of bars, movie houses, and restaurants that offer a refreshing contrast to Midtown. But don’t be fooled: the Lower East Side has a legacy of hosting the mysteries that lie behind closed doors and inside our imaginations.

Mark Dendy’s NEWYORKnewyork@AstorPlace shares marrow with the LES, a skeleton that rivets freaks and geeks with nostalgia. At Joe’s Pub last week, the work was provocative, wild, and weird. Dendy is celebrated for mixing genres, incorporating spoken word into dance and crossing over from eccentric experimentation to Broadway to ballet. And what exactly was NEWYORKnewyork@AstorPlace? I have absolutely no idea, and perhaps that’s what made it so compelling.

When I told my friends that I was headed to the Public on Wednesday, May 6, they assumed that it was for Hamilton, the musical hit of the season. They were, of course, wrong; I was off to an intimate, candlelit room to watch ghosts emerge from their graves. Ghosts of New York’s bourgeoisie. Ghosts of the gay movement. Shakespeare’s ghosts. It was all haunting in its absurdity.

2015-05-16-1431739861-4030962-150506_Mark_Dendy_007.jpg

Pictured: Abigail Levine (center),

NEWYORKnewyork@AstorPlace narrated the history of the street where the Public sits in its majesty. Dendy took no precautions for political correctness, and with a fake hand job and a strip tease onstage, there were plenty of moments when the audience squirmed. He also approached difficult issues like gentrification and the AIDS epidemic in the ’80s, which didn’t make for typical mealtime pleasantry. As spectators munched on hamburgers and fries, Christopher Bell gyrated as a gay exotic dancer with the kind of fervor that harbors sexual frustration and anger brought on by fear of disease. As they sipped on a jug of beer, Abigail Levine twirled aimlessly, mocking Taylor Swift’s “Welcome to New York” and its whitewashed sentimentality. Leslie Cuyjet ran around as a realtor, decrying artists for making New York “cool” and contributing to rising rents. Meanwhile, Danté Brown danced in a hoodie, representing racism until, with one ice-cold beat of a gunshot, he collapsed like the blow of a hammer.

Certainly, the piece felt scattered. It interfaced with so many dialogues that no one stood out for its urgency. Nevertheless, NEWYORKnewyork@AstorPlace had a strange allure. Dendy thought a lot about the current state of New York and how it differs from decades passed. He managed to infuse his movement with meaning, and few could belittle the performance as sheer entertainment. It forced the viewers to question, which is almost always good in a culture industry that so often dictates what we do unconsciously. And it was still pleasant at times because Dendy’s dancers, especially Mei Yamanaka and Bell, were intoxicating.

Would I go again? Absolutely not. It’s never nice to sit on edge, uncomfortable with the honesty of a situation. That’s what makes NEWYORKnewyork@AstorPlace important: it confounds without mercy.

I once had a philosophy professor who said that when you’re confused, it means you’re getting it. If so, Manhattanites have a lot to learn from Dendy and his stint at Joe’s Pub.

Hallyu 2.0: The Korean Wave in the Age of Social Media

Hallyu 2.0: The Korean Wave in the Age of Social Media

Collectively known as Hallyu, Korean music, television programs, films, online games, and comics enjoy global popularity, thanks to new communication technologies. In recent years, Korean popular culture has also become the subject of academic inquiry. Whereas the Hallyu’s impact on Korea’s national image and domestic economy, as well as on transnational cultural flows, have received much scholarly attention, there has been little discussion of the role of social media in Hallyu’s propagation. Contributors to Hallyu 2.0: The Korean Wave in the Age of Social Media explore the ways in which Korean popular cultural products are shared by audiences around the globe; how they generate new fans, markets, and consumers through social media networks; and how scholars can analyze, interpret, and envision the future of this unprecedented cultural phenomenon”

Visual Methods in Social Research

Visual Methods in Social Research

There has been an explosion of interest in visual culture – coming largely from work in sociology, anthropology and cultural studies and while there are a number of practical and technical manuals available for film, photographic and other visual media, there is a dearth of writing that combines both the practical and the technical. This book redresses this with a balanced approach that is written primarily for students in the social sciences who wish to use visual materials in the course of empirical, qualitative field research. It should also be of interest to experienced researchers who wish to expand their methodological approaches. Visual methods provides empirical approaches to both image creation and image analysis, drawing on a wide range of examples: from research conducted on Egyptian television soap opera, to the sale of ethnographic photographs in London auction houses, to pornographic images on the Web. New technologies are also included, with image digitization and computer-based multimedia extensively covered. There are sections on using film and photographic archives, and useful practical advice on publishing and presenting the results of visual research. Marcus Banks stresses the material nature of visual media, as objects that are entangled in social relations and argues for a humanistic, engaged and reflexive approach to social research. This book will be an indispensable guide for the use and study of social images.

New – For both political and practical reasons, healthcare reforms are more about doing-what-has-been-done-elsewhere rather than learning-by-doing. In this regard, developments in the German Social Health Insurance (SHI) system are of international importance not least because SHI is one of the primary models of financing healthcare both in the North and in the South. The name public social private partnership (PSPP) is a development of Public Private Partnership (PPP). PPP is one expression of a strong trend towards (re)privatisation, which in some European countries has arisen as a result of more difficult economic conditions in recent years and the associated structural crisis in the public sector (see Eschenbach, Mller, Gabriel: 1993). The growth in public-private partnerships as a way of fulfilling public tasks in partnership between the state administration and private enterprises must be seen in this context. Watch Harry Belafonte’s Powerful Speech On Social Injustice

Harry Belafonte was this year’s recipient of the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award during the sixth annual Governors Awards on Saturday night. The honorary Oscar is Belafonte’s first, and the 87-year-old singer, actor and social activist used the award as an opportunity to discuss Hollywood’s complicated history with racial injustice:

In 1935, at the age of 8, sitting in a Harlem theater, I watched with awe and wonder incredible feats of the white superhero, Tarzan of the Apes. Tarzan was a sight to see. This porcelain Adonis, this white liberator, who could speak no language, swinging from tree to tree, saving Africa from the tragedy of destruction by a black indigenous population of inept, ignorant, void-of-any-skills population, governed by ancient superstitions with no heart for Christian charity. Through this film the virus of racial inferiority — of never wanting to be identified with anything African — swept into the psyche of its youthful observers. And for the years that followed, Hollywood brought abundant opportunity for black children in their Harlem theaters to cheer Tarzan and boo Africans. […] But these encounters set other things in motion. It was an early stimulus to the beginning of my rebellion. Rebellion against injustice and human distortion and hate. How fortunate for me that the performing arts became the catalyst that fueled my desire for social change.

Belafonte went on to cite “The Defiant Ones,” “Schindler’s List,” “Brokeback Mountain,” “12 Years A Slave” and Sidney Poitier as moving the discussion forward in a positive way throughout the last 60 years. But he closed his speech with a call to arms for all of Hollywood, now and in the future:

I really wish I could be around for the rest of this century, to see what Hollywood does with the rest of the century. Maybe, just maybe, it could be civilization’s game changer. After all, as Paul Robeson said, artists are the radical voice of civilization. Each and every one of you in this room, with your gift and power and skills, could perhaps change the way in which our global humanity mistrusts itself. Perhaps we as artists and visionaries for what’s better in the human heart and the human soul could influence citizens everywhere in the world to see the better side of who and what we are as a species.

Brandy On Social Media: ‘I Don’t Think I Would Have Made It In This Generation’ (VIDEO)

With a music career that began when she was just 15 years old, singer and actress Brandy has been in the spotlight for two decades. Being a star on the rise can be difficult to navigate for any teen, but Brandy believes that today’s young stars have it much harder than she ever did. The reason? Social media.

In the above web exclusive from Brandy’s “Oprah: Where Are They Now?” interview, she explains the challenge of living in a world that is so socially connected.

“Oh my God… the opinions are so in-your-face,” she says. “I feel for the young artists today because people can just type them anything that they want to say and [be] negative, you know?”

Had social media been around during Brandy’s teen years, she doubts she would have been able to handle her naysayers having such direct access to her. “I don’t think I would have made it in this generation,” she admits. “I don’t think I had… that strength that you need to really have a sense of self.”

She may now be an industry veteran, but Brandy admits that she still struggles reading harsh comments as an adult.

“They say whatever [they want],” she says. “And things still affect me now.”

In the video below, Brandy joins “Oprah: Where Are They Now?” producers and opens up to HuffPost Live about her next big career goal.

“Oprah: Where Are They Now?” airs Sundays at 9 p.m. ET on OWN.

Meeting the Challenge of Social Problems via Agent-Based Simulation

Meeting the Challenge of Social Problems via Agent-Based Simulation

Social sciences are moving to the next stage. One ofthe promising methodologies is agent-based computer simulation. In a series ofworkshops on Agent-Based Ap- proaches in Economic and Social Complex Systems (AESCS), ground-breaking studies of complex economic and social phenomena using computational approaches are being presented and discussed. This volume contains papers selected from pre- sentations at the AESCS ’02 held at the University ofTokyo, Japan, on August 16, 2002. The workshop was the second in a series ofPacific Rim activities in interdis- ciplinary areas of social and computational sciences, the first workshop having been held in Shimane, Japan, May 21-22, 2001. The objective of AESCS workshops is to promote worldwide multidisciplinary activities in multiagent computational economics, organizational science, social dynamics, and complex systems. AESCS brings together researchers and practitio- ners from diverse fields, such as computer science, economics, physics, sociology, psychology, and complex theory, in order to understand emergent and collective phenomena in economic, organizational, and social systems.A ESCS also provides an opportunity for discussion ofthe effectiveness and limitations ofcomputational models and methodologies for the social sciences. The second AESCS workshop focused on the importance ofcumulative progress in agent-based simulation in the social sciences through discussions ofcommon tasks, standard computational models, replication and validation issues, and evalu- ation and verification criteria for the results.

Live Social Media TV Offers Behavioral Data

ABC premiered #RisingStar Sunday night and generated more than 1 million app downloads, and there is more to this innovation than television finally moving beyond the simple hashtag for live programs.

Users connected either a Facebook or Twitter account to activate the application during the two-hour music talent show hosted by Josh Groban. The gimmick is that by being a voting “judge” users might see a profile photo on a huge video wall that rises, if a performer gets 70 percent of the vote to move to the next round.

2014-06-23-RisingStar.PNG

The #RaiseTheWall hashtag generated some of the usual activity on Twitter, but it was the Rising Star app that is worth further attention. While the 2-ton wall was mostly difficult to see, the show was collecting massive amounts of user data.

Once connected, the app followed along as three voting “experts” — Chris “Ludacris” Bridges, Kesha, and Brad Paisley — were introduced. Groban established the live nature of the show with World Cup talk and some edgy banter with the stars.

Each time a performer was introduced, app users were required to check in to be eligible to vote. Thus, ABC can show advertisers how many engaged viewers stayed with the show and how quickly they re-connected after each commercial break. These viewer behavior data are far ahead of traditional audience sample household data.

Rising Star also pushed messages during the commercial breaks, such as meeting a couple of “fellow judges” and humor about taking the app to the bathroom.

2014-06-23-RisingStar2.PNG

There are some issues with the technology. The app takes the entire screen of a smartphone or tablet, which means users might need two devices to continue to follow other social media during the show or bail out.

Online criticism of the show included questionable talent, slow program pace (with a second West Coast broadcast) and audience vote priming through expert panel antics. Yet, in the end, the live show broke some new social media ground. The final performer of the evening, selected from an earlier Instagram audition, nailed the live performance. The studio audience went wild, and Rising Star had the expected happy ending.

TV must use mobile app technology in this way for a variety of programming — from presidential debates to sports and awards show — for it to find a happy ending in the fragmented social media world that searches for audience attention.

Working With Gender: Wage Labor And Social Change In Southwestern Nigeria

Working With Gender: Wage Labor And Social Change In Southwestern Nigeria

Lindsay argues that wage labor became gendered as male because of transformations in the labor process, along with the concrete goals and values of individual Nigerian men and women, which were often influenced by indigenous and imported ideas about modernization. This book provides a view of modernization from a Nigerian, working-class perspective. It points to the tensions and engagement between the practical strategies and ideological assumptions of various colonial administrators and African workers. On Twenty-Five Years of Social Epistemology: A Way Forward

On Twenty-Five Years of Social Epistemology: A Way Forward

This edited collection charts the development of, and prospects for, conceiving knowledge as a social phenomenon. The origin, aims and growth of the journal “Social Epistemology,” founded in 1987, serves to anchor each of the book s contributions. Each contribution offers a unique, but related, insight on current issues affecting the organization and production of knowledge. In addition, each contribution proposes necessary questions, practices and frameworks relevant to the rapidly changing landscape of our conceptions of knowledge. The book examines the commercialization of science, the neoliberal university, the status and conduct of philosophy, the cultures of computer software and social networking, the practical, political and anthropological applications of social epistemology, and how we come to define what human beings are and what activities human beings can, and should, sustain. A diverse group of noted, international scholars lends necessary, original and challenging perspectives on our collective approach to knowledge. This book was originally published as a special issue of “Social Epistemology.”

The Eisenhower Years: A Social History of the 1950’s

The Eisenhower Years: A Social History of the 1950’s

The Fabulous Fifties were America’s “Happy Days.” The Eisenhower Years produced amazing contributions to our American culture — and to other cultures around the world. In so many ways, Americans innovated, and the world imitated — from Elvis Presley and rock ‘n’ roll to the Salk anti-polio vaccine. America’s contributions to the world included motion pictures and the Broadway stage; radio and television; amateur and professional sports; jazz, the “blues,” country-and-Western music, traditional ballads and popular songs, and rock ‘n’ roll; domestic and international business and trade; public and private educational opportunities; and a rich and varied literature. While Americans did not invent all these categories, they nevertheless took each to new heights during the Eisenhower Years, and shared their bounty with the world. The Eisenhower Years, generally speaking, were happier, more stable, more prosperous, more optimistic, and simpler times then the preceding decades of the 1930’s and ’40’s and the increasingly turbulent 1960’s and ’70’s that followed. In fact, America’s exuberance in so many areas of the arts and everyday life was omnipresent. As for political and military achievements, President Eisenhower kept us safely out of war, and was wise enough to stay out of the way of America?s artists and entrepreneurs. As a result, the Eisenhower Years should forever be remembered as those “Happy Days.”

Reading Beyond the Book: The Social Practices of Contemporary Literary Culture

Helping Your Shy and Socially Anxious Client: A Social Fitness Training Protocol Using CBT

Helping Your Shy and Socially Anxious Client: A Social Fitness Training Protocol Using CBT

“Helping Your Shy And Socially Anxious Client” presents a breakthrough therapeutic approach to treating social anxiety. In a world dominated by extroverts, being shy or socially anxious can make life especially challenging. And while there is nothing wrong with being naturally introverted, avoiding social contact due to extreme fear and anxiety can be very damaging both mentally and physically. As a therapist, you understand that avoidance can often make a client’s anxiety worse. But many clients with shyness and social anxiety believe they can never change. In fact, they may strategically adjust their lives to avoid social activities or situations that make them uncomfortable. In a sense, they allow their social “muscles” to atrophy, and in the end may become even more alienated and despondent. There is hope. Just as physical fitness strengthens the body, “social fitness” can be developed through habit and action. In “Helping Your Shy and Socially Anxious Client, ” shyness expert Lynne Henderson presents the Social Fitness program–a twelve session cognitive behavioral model for clients with shyness and social anxiety. Inside, mental health professionals will learn powerful tools for helping clients strengthen their social skills, track their successes, and learn to cope with setbacks or hurdles. The techniques described in this manual were developed for the Stanford Shyness Clinic by Philip Zimbardo, and are currently being used by the Shyness Institute in Berkeley to educate therapists and other counselors. Social Butterflies’ Brains Differ From Those Of People With Fewer Friends, New Study Shows

SAN DIEGO — Being a social butterfly just might change your brain: In people with a large network of friends and excellent social skills, certain brain regions are bigger and better connected than in people with fewer friends, a new study finds.

The research, presented here Tuesday (Nov. 12) at the annual meeting of the Society for Neuroscience, suggests a connection between social interactions and brain structure.

“We’re interested in how your brain is able to allow you to navigate in complex social environments,” study researcher MaryAnn Noonan, a neuroscientist at Oxford University, in England, said at a news conference. Basically, “how many friends can your brain handle?” Noonan said. [7 Personality Traits You Should Change]

Scientists still don’t understand how the brain manages human behavior in increasingly complex social situations, or what parts of the brain are linked to deviant social behavior associated with conditions like autism and schizophrenia.

Studies in macaque monkeys have shown that brain areas involved in face processing and in predicting the intentions of others are larger in animals living in large social groups than in ones living in smaller groups.

To investigate these brain differences in humans, Noonan and her colleagues at McGill University, in Canada, recruited 18 participants for a structural brain-imaging study. They asked people how many social interactions they had experienced in the past month, in order to determine the size of their social networks.

As was the case in monkeys, some brain areas were enlarged and better connected in people with larger social networks. In humans, these areas were the temporal parietal junction, the anterior cingulate cortex and the rostral prefrontal cortex, which are part of a network involved in “mentalization” — the ability to attribute mental states, thoughts and beliefs to another.

“These different brain regions are all singing different songs,” Noonan said. “Networked areas are all singing the same song, and when they’re connected better, they’re singing more harmoniously with each other.”

The researchers also tested whether the size of a person’s social network was linked with changes in white-matter pathways, the nerve fibers that connect different brain regions.

Again, they found that white-matter tracts were better connected in people with bigger social networks. “The nerves were more like a Los Angeles freeway than a country road,” Noonan said.

The researchers couldn’t say whether social interaction caused these changes in brain structure and connectivity, or whether the brain determined how innately social someone was.

In the case of the monkeys, the researchers dictated the size of the animals’ social network, so they concluded that social-group size was causing the brain differences.

It can be inferred that a similar process takes place in human brains, but to prove this, long-term studies are needed, Noonan told LiveScience.

The fact that some brain regions may be larger and more connected suggests other regions might be smaller in the brains of the more socially adept, Noonan said.

“If you’re spending a lot of time in social environments using social skills and your brain’s changing, maybe you’re not learning to juggle in your free time or becoming proficient at the piano,” she said. “The brain is just changing and optimizing to reflect your needs, and if that is thriving within a complex social environment, that is what your brain is reflecting.”
