Cremieux to Replace SoHo Unit With Hudson Yards Store

NEW YORK — Count Cremieux as the latest upscale tenant to sign on at Hudson Yards.
The French men’s wear brand, which got its start in Saint-Tropez in 1976, will open an 800-square-foot store at The Shops and Restaurants at Hudson Yards, a key element of the neighborhood that is being built on Manhattan’s far West Side. When completed, Hudson Yards will include more than 18 million square feet of commercial and residential space, more than 100 stores, a collection of restaurants, 4,000 residences, a 750-seat public school, a 200-room Equinox hotel and 14 acres of public open space.
The Cremieux store is expected to open in mid-March and will join anchor Neiman Marcus as well as Dior, Cartier, Van Cleef & Arpels, Coach, Kiehl’s, AG Jeans by Adriano Goldschmied and Forty-Five-Ten.
At Hudson Yards, the store will be located near Cartier, Dior, Fendi and other brands with a similar aesthetic, said Stephane Cremieux, chief executive officer of Cremieux and son of founder Daniel Cremieux.
The shop will replace the 700-square-foot, two-level unit at 65 Mercer Street that closed in June. That store had been open for four years but the lease was up for renewal and the landlord would not reduce the rent, Cremieux said.

Karl Lagerfeld to Open First U.S. Store in SoHo Saturday

Karl Lagerfeld is ready to take SoHo by storm.
On Saturday, the Karl Lagerfeld brand will open its first U.S. store at 420 West Broadway in New York, which features a mix of Lagerfeld’s European collection and Karl Lagerfeld Paris, which is a joint venture with G-III Apparel Group.
“The moment seems to be right and the space is great,” Lagerfeld told WWD. He noted that distribution of his signature brand, re-launched in the burgeoning masstige category in 2012, first put down retail roots in Europe and then China. “Our first tests in the U.S. were great.”
Inspired by the designer’s personal home and studio, the 3,230-square-foot store has a sophisticated yet inviting, open feel. Each of the furnishings has an unusual story behind it, from antique mirrors to velvet chairs and luxurious marble finishes to the giant Tokidoki silver cartoon sculpture of Lagerfeld — with a ponytail — holding his famous feline, Choupette. A bespoke carpet has a red border around its edges, similar to the border that the designer draws on all of his sketches. A full-size photograph of Lagerfeld, wearing fingerless gloves and chains, and taking a photo with his camera, greets visitors at the entrance.
One highlight is a library wall inspired by

Jeffrey Rudes to Shutter SoHo Flagship

NEW YORK — Jeffrey Rudes will close his 5,800-square-foot store at 57 Greene Street in SoHo today. The boutique, which opened to much fanfare in July 2015, housed the designer’s luxury men’s wear and was his only freestanding store.
The reason for the closure was to focus on the brand’s “more lucrative” online business and selected wholesale accounts, a spokesman said. He added there were no plans at this time to open other freestanding stores. Rudes sells to Ron Herman in Los Angeles.
Based in Los Angeles with a design atelier in Bologna, Italy, Rudes had staged his men’s wear presentations at the SoHo store three times. In January, Rudes showed his men’s wear collection in a private duplex apartment in Paris, but also showed at the store as part of New York Fashion Week: Men’s.
At the fall 2017 presentation in Paris, Rudes, who designs alongside creative director Lorenzo Marchese, told WWD his aim is to nudge the customer gently forward each season and to offer clothes that are “wearable, approachable and consistent.”
The SoHo store was conceived by Rudes in collaboration with Steed Hale, principal of Steed Hale Interior Design & Co. Among the design elements were a renovated red brick and iron-columned

Nautica to Open Full-Price Store in SoHo

NEW YORK — Nautica is getting back into the full-price retail business in the U.S.
The nautical-skewed brand will open a flagship at 101 Prince Street in SoHo later this week. The 2,000-square-foot store, which is located between the Apple Store and J. Crew, marks the first Nautica store to open in Manhattan in over a decade. The company operates over 200 stores internationally, but only outlet stores in America.
The new store is part of the company’s repositioning strategy that was revealed in February. The plan revolves around the theme of “Reimagine Nautica — Inspired by the Sea, Designed in the City,” and includes a good, better, best pricing approach. The SoHo store will carry the higher-priced, more aspirational product and will include women’s wear as well.
Karen Murray, president of Nautica, said, “It is exciting for our brand and consumers to have a retail location in the city that we have called home for over 30 years.”
The SoHo store will offer a “reimagined nautical environment with references to a modern cityscape,” the company said. This will translate into a sophisticated, boutique-style store with nautical references including natural oak beams intended to be reminiscent of a boat.
The store will also include a “style bar,” which will feature an assortment

I Know This Much: From Soho to Spandau

I Know This Much: From Soho to Spandau

I Know This Much – by Gary Kemp, Spandau Ballet’s prime mover – is simply the freshest, most exciting and best-written memoir to arrive for years. Gary’s story begins in North London, where the Kemp family rented a home with no bathrooms and chickens in the yard. After a couple of failed attempts to kill his brother Martin, his parents gave him a guitar for Christmas. From schoolyard battles between the Bowie Boys and the Prog Rockers to Mrs Kemp’s firm insistence on net curtains, from acting for the Children’s Film Foundation to manning a fruit and veg stall on Saturdays, Gary brilliantly evokes an upbringing full of love, creativity and optimism. As the Thatcher years begin, Gary’s account of the outrageous London club scene centred around the Blitz and Billy’s is just sizzling. Out of this glamorous mayhem of kilt-wearing mascara’d peacocks would emerge Spandau Ballet – the band that would define the era, and hold high the victorious standard of the New Romantics. Gary’s thrilling journey with Spandau Ballet would see them record worldwide hits such as True, Gold and Through the Barricades, play the biggest stadiums in the world, and take to the stage in togas when their luggage gets lost in flight. Stallions, supermodels and dwarves would be hired for video shoots, and through it all, Gary records the wonderful friendships, and the slowly-building tensions that would eventually see five old friends facing each other in court. I Know This Much tells the story of Spandau Ballet, but it’s far more than a book about being in a band. Whether it’s meeting Ronnie Kray before filming The Krays, sketching out the fashions and subcultures of the day, or hanging out with Princess Diana, this book offers a story on every page. And all the more so because it’s all written – brilliantly – by Gary himself.

Siddharth Parasnis at Campton Gallery, SoHo

Siddharth Parasnis

Siddharth Parasnis, whose work is on view at Campton Gallery through May 31, knows how to play geometry against instability. His architectural fantasies are improvised constructions built from planes of color that collide, overlap and coalesce into form.

Parasnis works from his memories of places he has lived and traveled — including India, Guatemala, Costa Rica and the Honduras — but it isn’t quite right to say that his work has a sense of place. It would be more accurate to say that he creates new places that demonstrate his affection for buildings and cultures that haven’t lost their souls. The buildings he admires, and the buildings he paints, all bear traces of eccentricity and individual effort in their construction. In a way, Parasnis manages to say some things about people without including them in his pictures.

Eternity #65, Oil on canvas, 55 x 45 inches

A native of India who currently works in the Bay Area, Parasnis has hybridized a wide range of influences from Indian miniature painting to the works of Richard Diebenkorn and other American abstract painters. He has a dynamic color sense that enlivens his compositions with unexpected juxtapositions and fresh harmonies. Underneath the slight leanings of his structures is an ease with perspective and a firm, athletic command of line.

2015-05-26-1432682856-6185556-53.jpg

Eternity #53, Oil on canvas, 48 x 48 inches

Eternity #53, which balances representation and abstraction, features a brilliant blue door that is shaded by a slightly tilted corrugated roof. Surrounded by energetically carpentered planes and stripes that are streaked with underpainting, the door offers entry to an invented world that is both dilapidated and enticing. It seems to suggest a delightful state of deferred maintenance that goes with a slower pace of life and less concern for upkeep.

Hometown #33, Oil on canvas, 36 x 36 inches

In Hometown #33 a symphony of jagged rooflines, tilting timber and unstable planes is bathed by a pale blue sky. It is a remarkably welcoming picture that makes you want to knock at the front door… if there is one. Inside you would likely find people who are have learned to improvise as the world around them shudders. Like the artist who invented the world that they live in, these imaginary people would likely offer you genuine warmth and conviviality.
