Science and the Soul

Science and the Soul

Are you agnostic? Religious? Or, by default, of atheistic/ materialistic faith? Whichever mind-set you inhabit, this book is for you. Science and the Soul interprets the world in terms of a framework called Natural Dialectic. Within this ‘philosophical machine’ it coordinates the major scientific disciplines of physics, psychology, biology and information technology – but not necessarily with conventional results. For example, according to materialism’s modernistic view everything is physical – unless, that is, a metaphysical constituent exists. Could any immaterial factor (say, conscious perception, informant reason or mathematics) be discounted by an intellectual whim or, on the other hand, exert a universal influence? Natural Dialectic’s simple, binary oscillation treats child-like questions that have excited and still excite the whole of philosophy and science. How did cosmos start? Who in heaven’s name am I? Where on earth did you spring from? What, if any, is the object of brief travel through the nothingness of time and space? Can the theory of evolution and, therefore, materialism withstand incisive analysis? If you’re intrigued then come with Science and the Soul upon a voyage of discovery. Welcome aboard (in neutral, alphabetical order) all Buddhists, Christians, Darwinists, Hindus, humanists, Jews, materialists, Muslims, scientific atheists, Taoists and other sorts of faith or lack of it! Armed with this tour de force (and its companion elaborations called Adam and Evolution, A Mutant Ape? and A Potted Grammar of Natural Dialectic) read on. * The print version contains a detailed Index. This you are invited to regard as a web, a kind of sub-text whose indented entries make connections all across the volume’s natural world.

Reflections on the Soul of Washington, DC: An Interview With Thomas Moore

On July 4th the nation will celebrate its 239th Independence Day. Around the country citizens will celebrate with fireworks and barbeques, vacation getaways, and more somber ceremonies to honor the nation’s veterans. But Independence Day is important in another way: as a time to contemplate the deeper meaning of America. In the following interview with psychotherapist Thomas Moore, bestselling author of Care of the Soul, he reveals the deeper symbolism contained within our American myths and symbols of freedom and independence, especially as they are reflected in the monuments and memorials of the nation’s capital–a place Moore describes as “sacred.” The following is an excerpt from that interview as it appears in my new book, America on the Couch: Psychological Perspectives on American Politics and Culture. (Lantern Books).

Pythia Peay: Can you explain what “soul” means to the layperson?

Thomas Moore: Generally speaking, the spirit is the “upper half,” the part of us that is looking for transcendence, or to evolve, grow, or improve. Whether a city or a person, it’s an orientation toward the future, the eternal afterlife, or those universal values that are above individual circumstances. But the soul is always particular: it’s about family roots, memory, and the past. Spirit is more interested in planning, and the soul is more interested in remembering. The soul works through mood, emotion, reverie, and dreams: all those things are proper to the soul.

So, soul also has a lot to do with those invisible currents that are in the background of everything that’s going on. And one thing that’s always going on in the background is the history of a place.

PP: Washington, D.C. would be even more significant from a soul perspective, then, because it’s the city of our national memory. It’s also rich with images around democracy and the story of the country’s beginnings.

TM: Exactly. The monuments and memorials are extremely important, not just for the city, but for the nation. When I travel throughout the states — and it doesn’t matter what’s going on politically — I find that people feel very deeply and strongly about Washington. The people who have power and money will come and go, but the memorials will remain. So to me, Washington is one of our nation’s treasures, and its primary job is to act as a guardian for the nation’s memory.

PP: I have to admit that sometimes the city feels more like a tourist destination than one of our nation’s sacred treasures.

TM: I wouldn’t call those visitors “tourists.” They’re clearly pilgrims. People are not going to D.C. as tourists the way they would visit another city. [But] what these tourists are doing as they tour the monuments and the city is an aspect of civil religion: it’s honest to goodness deep, deep, soul religion. That’s different even from the spiritual dimension of religion.

PP: So how would this apply to Washington, D.C., and what would a “soul” and a “spirit” approach to the nation’s capital feel like?

TM: The spirit part is to make everything function well, and to be efficient. . .With spirit, there’s a tendency to be educational and to explain everything, rather than letting people have the simple experience of the images and the memories they evoke.

A soul approach would be to visit an old building, for example, and go into a room where an old document was signed, without having to listen to someone give a lecture about it… So when someone is standing in front of a monument, or is in some historic room or building, they need to allow their imagination time and quiet.

PP: D.C. is so rich with statues and images carved into its buildings. Is there a particular figure that to you embodies something of the soul of the city?

TM: The art of weaving things together is a very traditional image of soul. The Goddess Athena, who was the patroness of Athens, and who is the patroness of all cities, was a weaver: I see Athena in all of the buildings, and particularly in the Statue of Freedom atop the Capitol. Being able to weave together cultures and personalities and all sorts of peoples and religions–that is the work of Athena, and that is the work of the city and of the government. So she is the patroness of the soul of the city: not the running of it, but the weaving.

PP: When we think of Dallas, we think of cowboys and Stetson hats and cattle. When we think of Los Angeles, we think of Hollywood. What comes to mind when you think of Washington, D.C.?

TM: When I come to Washington, I feel as if I’m in a whirlpool, or a vortex. In Washington there’s the sense that this is the place where the country and the world holds together. It’s a city where you’re not just thinking of the place itself, you’re thinking of the rest of the country and the world in a way that I don’t feel anywhere else. When I’m in D.C. there’s that sense that people everywhere are looking to the city for their wellbeing: by that I mean peace, justice, and the democratic ideals. That’s what all those institutions, the exalted language carved on the monuments and the great documents that are kept there, are really all about.

The average person in Nebraska or California doesn’t have to think about that kind of life and death stuff as much… Even the monuments and memorials are about wars and battles and great figures, so the city raises us to a level of great reflection. Other places don’t have the opportunity — or the burden — of having to think about these matters.

PP: It’s interesting that you use the word burden. Often people living in the Washington area feel it’s kind of a heavy place to be, even if they’re not in politics. I know I feel physically lighter when I leave the city.

TM: When Lincoln was president, the weight he felt almost stooped him over physically… But the soul is always found in the underworld, among the heavier things like depression and suffering. I think that to be able to carry that burden and not defend against it would be the sign of a mature society in the city of Washington.

There is no way to live in Washington without being affected by what goes on there. That city is a place in the dream life of people in cities and capitals around the world: Washington, D.C. has a place in their imagination, more prominently than other places in this country. So I don’t think you can be a citizen of that city without carrying the weight of that projection.

PP: One of the recurring themes that often comes up around the city’s future is the conflict between the old and the new, and the desire to break free of the past. So there’s a tension; periodically people talk about changing the image of the city… and making it a city of the future, and not the past.

TM: Please save us from that! However, I understand the flight from the past–especially if it’s full of painful memories. I lived in Dallas many years ago, and at one time there was a movement to tear down the Texas Depository Building, because it was such a blight on the image of the city. In fact, the building was a painful burden for the city, because there were so many bad memories associated with it around President Kennedy’s assassination. But it was still important to keep it as a landmark.

PP: Why?

TM: Well, imagine if a person came into therapy and said I want to forget about all the bad things that happened to me in the past and start from scratch all over again. Any decent therapist would say that person is headed for trouble because we have to own our own life: it’s part of becoming a mature person.

PP: Do you mean in the sense that we can learn from the mistakes of the past?

TM: No. It’s that our character is made from the suffering and experiences of the past. To pretend that those experiences are no longer relevant is a repression of the past. So to say, “Let’s move on and become a new city” is also a repression of the past. It’s not really moving ahead — it’s an aggressive thing to do; it’s anti-soul, and it’s a movement against the past. It can lead to nothing but trouble.

PP: Of course, America is founded on leaving the past behind. We left Europe, and then we left the east coast for the Midwest, and the Midwest for California.

TM: That’s the country’s strength; but it has a big shadow. In everything we do–every country does this, but we do it to absurd lengths — we continue to try to be new and to get rid of the past. But in a part of our national psyche, we’re still fighting the Revolution, and we’re still trying to shed the old king! So we have to learn to see ourselves as part of a long spectrum. We can demonize the past and all the mistakes that have been made. But that kind of abrupt movement away from the past is an adolescent kind of behavior that doesn’t want anything to do with all that “old stuff.”

PP: But what’s interesting is that our national memory and national history celebrates revolution. It’s as if that abrupt break from the “old country” is what our very identity as Americans is based on. So we immediately run into a paradox.

TM: My first thought to what you said is that we have all these cities [and states]–New London, New York, New Boston, New Hampshire — that are both new but that also echo back to the old country… So even though some people rebelled against England in forming the country, at an underlying level the connection remained there anyway. And if we identify with the rebels and romanticize the Revolution, which we tend to do, we’re only talking about half of the story. Hardly anyone talks about the violence of the Revolution, or the people who were killed in the process, as if there might have been another way to separate from the Fatherland. That kind of reflection on the Revolution would be more sobering; we wouldn’t want to go out and celebrate that all the time.

PP: What do you feel about the Vietnam Memorial?

TM: It’s very effective, because it’s not representational. The names on the wall mean the memorial is about the individual, rather than the group: soul is local and individual, as opposed to universal. It’s a place that favors a kind of walking meditation; it invites people in because it doesn’t explain or tell them what to do. So it’s where visitors can make up their own rituals, which they do daily by placing objects and crying at the wall.

PP: What about the monuments and memorials that are built around Lincoln or Jefferson or George Washington?

TM: These images aren’t just representations: they’re presences. There’s a big difference between representing something and making a presence. When a monument is done well and carefully with some depth to it, a certain spirit of personality comes through and is present. A monument is really “working,” for instance, when we see the crowds that are drawn to it, and how the people are behaving. When we see people being quiet in the presence of a place, or crying or talking softly to each other, or coming up with their own rituals, for instance, then we know that there is a real presence there that allows a person to be there with their own soul.

PP: Do you have certain rituals of your own when you visit the capital?

TM: I come with some regularity, and often stay at some older hotel that’s right in the center of town. I want to be in a place where there is memory, even in a building. I also go for long walks, and make a circle around the White House. I meditate and go around the Capitol very thoughtfully, feeling the presence of what the place is, where it is in the world. I feel a tremendous sense of responsibility, and an increased sense of my place in the world.

PP: People often talk about “power” as part of the myth of D.C. But you seem to describe it as more “power-full.”

TM: Right: it’s full of power, but not in the way we might say that a person has great power…. In my view, Washington is the spiritual center of the country. I don’t mean that in terms of a church or beliefs. I mean that in the very real sense of a religious way of being. Those who work and serve there could be compared to priests and priestesses. I think politicians get into trouble because they think of themselves as managers, and they view the whole operation as purely secular — but it isn’t. To have the role of leader and to be someone who decides these great issues of democracy and government: that is a religious role. They’re speaking for the spirit of democracy, which is much greater than themselves or their personal philosophies.

PP: By using the word religious, do you mean something different from church-related religiosity?

TM: What I’m suggesting is that what holds our nation together is beyond any individual’s power to control… So the only way democracy is going to work is if politicians realize that they’re serving something that’s beyond their individual power. It’s also important that they accept the “rituals” of politics. The special robes worn by the Supreme Court Justices, and the ceremonies when the President enters the Capitol building: these vestiges of the past in our modern-day society are hints that what government and politicians are doing have profound religious dimensions. If we don’t recognize these rites and roles as sacred, then our government and politics will turn into a personal operation, and that’s where it falls apart. The monuments and stories of our Founding Fathers and the founding of the country are mythic. These are our heroes, and this is our American mythology.

John Galliano Bares His Soul In Conversation With Rabbi

It’s been four years since John Galliano went on an infamous anti-semitic rant that got him canned from Dior, and it looks like the designer is on the road to spiritual redemption.

On Thursday night, Galliano spoke in London alongside Rabbi Barry Marcus of London’s Central Synagogue at a Jewish educational event. According to The Guardian, he came clean as he took the stage:

“I am an alcoholic. I am an addict,” he said. “This is in no way an excuse. We alcoholics and we addicts are not responsible for our disease. However, I do take complete responsibility for my recovery and making amends.”

He added: “I get a daily reprieve from this disease and that comes from total abstinence.”

The designer said burnout was one of the factors behind his vicious rant back in 2011, a time when we was creating 32 collections a year as head designer for Dior and for his own label. Though he took a long hiatus from fashion following the incident, he was recently hired as creative director of fashion house Maison Martin Margiela.

A rabbi may seem like the least likely person to help Galliano, but the Guardian reports Marcus has been instrumental in the designer’s recovery. Not only did the rabbi sit front row at Galliano’s first Margiela show in January, but he told the audience Thursday night that the designer should not be treated “more harshly” than an “endless list of celebrities” who have made controversial statements about Jewish people, and asked for everyone to show “a little graciousness.”

We all know that this winter has been pretty rough with the seemingly endless blizzards, ice storms and sub-zero weather. But March marks the beginning of spring — the season of change. Mother Nature runs her course, thawing life out of the winter cold and breathing new life into spring. People seem to reflect that same change this time of year as well. Researchers have noted that spring is often a time where people step out of a stagnant and enclosed mindset into a more relaxed state of mind.

But before we can pack away our puffy coats and bring out our favorite espadrilles let’s take the time to make goals for our spring. In the few weeks of cold that we still have left, I encourage you to focus on the goals you made at the beginning of the year (you remember those New Year’s resolutions, right?) and the things you want to rid yourself of moving forward. Here are a few suggestions for some mental spring cleaning before we whisk away into our short shorts:

Sweep out unhealthy relationships: Can’t stop thinking about the ex that wronged you? Feeling hurt by the emotional absence of someone who used to be a friend? Not enjoying the way certain people in your life make you feel? There will always be people in your life that may not be the healthiest friends or colleagues for you, whether that’s in the workplace, school, or your daily life. Realizing someone is not healthy for you is a process. The actual act of cleaning them out, may involve simple habit changes. Unplugging on social media can be a great first step. Instead of unfriending or unfollowing someone specific, spend a couple of days completely off of Facebook and Twitter and simplify your life. If it feels good, unplug even more. Once you stop worrying about that person or people online you’ll start to relax and forget about how they made you feel in real life. If social media isn’t your thing, try to make an extra effort for the friends who do make you feel good. Plan a girls night with the ladies who have stuck by your side, invite a friend who you haven’t had a ton of time for to lunch, allow yourself to enjoy the people who care about you! One of the hardest things to learn in life is how to let people go, it’s hard but if you put your attention on the relationships that actually give you something, you’ll feel better!

Scrub your mental space: We are so consumed by the hustle and bustle of every day life that we often allow things to not only pile up on our desk but also in our soul. Spring is a great season to clean out your mind and let positive, balanced energy in. Try a creative venture; read a new book, take 10 minutes out of your day to work on a craft or do some free writing. Or you could simply allow yourself to find inspiration from the mundane. Do you walk to work? Take a train or car? Why not use that time to listen to a new band or find a podcast that could interest you? Have you ever truly explored your own neighborhood, looked at the architecture, gone people watching? Creativity and inspiration are the best cleaning products for the soul.

Rest and tune up: It’s so easy to be sucked into nervous energy throughout our daily life. Deadlines, dues, family, friends, money, health; it’s needless to say we have a lot to worry about. While nervous energy can help us get things done, it can also do a number on our physical and mental health. It’s crucial for our bodies and minds to rest; the No. 1 way? Sleep. Getting eight hours of sleep per night can lengthen your life expectancy and support your immune system. If sleep isn’t an option, try meditation; 20 minutes of meditation per day has been shown to increase emotional and physical health as well as reduce your risk for heart disease. Seeing as the average American watches 4-5 hours of TV a day, finding 20 minutes will be a cinch! Prioritize resting your body and mind and you will wake up with more energy this spring.

There are a million ways to let spring influence your life. Let yourself breathe, rest, enjoy the people you love, and allow yourself to let go of those who make you feel insecure and unhappy. Get inspired by your world and community and enjoy the soul change this season!

Body and Soul

Body and Soul

Between its founding in 1966 and its formal end in 1980, the Black Panther Party blazed a distinctive trail in American political culture. The Black Panthers are most often remembered for their revolutionary rhetoric and militant action. Here Alondra Nelson deftly recovers an indispensable but lesser-known aspect of the organization’s broader struggle for social justice: health care. The Black Panther Party’s health activism-its network of free health clinics, its campaign to raise awareness about genetic disease, and its challenges to medical discrimination-was an expression of its founding political philosophy and also a recognition that poor blacks were both underserved by mainstream medicine and overexposed to its harms. Drawing on extensive historical research as well as interviews with former members of the Black Panther Party, Nelson argues that the Party’s focus on health care was both practical and ideological. Building on a long tradition of medical self-sufficiency among African Americans, the Panthers’ People’s Free Medical Clinics administered basic preventive care, tested for lead poisoning and hypertension, and helped with housing, employment, and social services. In 1971, the party launched a campaign to address sickle-cell anemia. In addition to establishing screening programs and educational outreach efforts, it exposed the racial biases of the medical system that had largely ignored sickle-cell anemia, a disease that predominantly affected people of African descent. The Black Panther Party’s understanding of health as a basic human right and its engagement with the social implications of genetics anticipated current debates about the politics of health and race. That legacy-and that struggle-continues today in the commitment of health activists and the fight for universal health care.

Elizabeth Gilbert Explains What Everyone Gets Wrong About ‘Soul Mates’ (VIDEO)

How many times have you heard people say they’re looking for their “soul mate?” When she embarked on her now-famous Eat, Pray, Love journey, author Elizabeth Gilbert did end up falling deeply in love with her now-husband — but he isn’t the “soul mate” that so many people search for. And that’s exactly why Gilbert says their relationship has a lasting future.

“People think a soul mate is your perfect fit, and that’s what everyone wants,” Gilbert wrote in Eat, Pray, Love. “But a true soul mate is a mirror, the person who shows you everything that’s holding you back, the person who brings you to your own attention so you can change your life. A true soul mate is probably the most important person you will ever meet, because they tear down your walls and smack you awake.”

Before she journeyed to Italy, India and Bali for her book, Gilbert couldn’t make sense of the fact that she had found and subsequently lost a man she had believed to be her soul mate. Then, a friend of Gilbert’s carefully explained what a soul mate is — and why you don’t always want to marry him.

“He told me about somebody who I had lost — who I thought was my soul mate — he said, ‘He probably was. But you don’t understand what a soul mate is,'” Gilbert recalls her friend saying. “‘You think it’s all roses and happiness. A soul mate is somebody who changes you. And then, sometimes, they have to leave because the intensity of the relationship is so much that you can’t actually have [stability].'”

Rather than look to a “soul mate” for lasting love or marriage, Gilbert now believes in looking for something different.

“Your partner is something else,” Gilbert says. “That’s your friend. My husband is my best friend. He’s not the mirror that holds up my flaws. He’s just the guy who’s like, ‘I think you’re terrific’… It’s just simple, showing up for each other.”

Gilbert still admits that the fire and intensity of a soul mate isn’t without its merits. “Whatever they fired up in you, you might have needed fired up,” she says. “And then you might need them to go, so that you can go on your journey.”

The second part of Elizabeth Gilbert’s conversation with Oprah airs on “Super Soul Sunday” this Sunday, Oct. 12, on OWN at 11 a.m. ET, during which it also streams live on Oprah.com, Facebook.com/owntv and Facebook.com/supersoulsunday.

After going through a devastating divorce, author Elizabeth Gilbert took a journey of self-discovery that led her to Italy, India and Bali. In Bali, she met a Brazilian-born man she called Felipe in her best-seller Eat, Pray, Love. Jose (Felipe’s real name) and Elizabeth eventually married, a journey she chronicled in her book Committed.

Through it all, Elizabeth says, she’s learned what a soul mate truly is. “People think a soul mate is your perfect fit, and that’s what everyone wants,” she writes in Eat, Pray, Love. “But a true soul mate is a mirror, the person who shows you everything that’s holding you back, the person who brings you to your own attention.”

Still, you might not always want to marry that person. In the video above, Elizabeth explains why and reflects on her current marriage.

Actress Ali MacGraw has been married and divorced three times. Her first marriage to college sweetheart Robin Hoen lasted a year and a half. In 1971, on the heels of Love Story’s success, Ali married legendary producer Robert Evans and gave birth to her only son, Josh. Two years later, she and Robert broke up after Ali began a public affair with screen icon Steve McQueen. Steve and Ali divorced in 1978 after five tumultuous years.

Ali says her marriages all ended for the same reason: She never said who she really was. Looking back, Ali admits she had an arrogant approach to marriage. “It was, ‘Why can’t you read my mind about what I’d like and what I wouldn’t like?'” she says. In the video above, Ali reflects on the biggest mistake she made in her relationships.

Grammy-winning singer/songwriter Alanis Morissette’s journey to spiritual awakening was kickstarted in 1997 when she stepped away from the chaos in her life and took a trip to India. It’s a moment she has described as an awakening. “I had what I now consider to be a glimpse of bliss,” she says. “A month of bliss.”

While in India, Alanis meditated for hours on end, hiked and reconnected with herself. “I was disconnected from the sense of God. I was disconnected from my relationships,” she says. “Everything was fragmented. And so I was believing that that was what I was. I was this fragmented thing.”

When it came time to leave, Alanis was determined to bring India home with her. In the video above, she shares how long that feeling lasted and whether she can reconnect with it today.

More than a worldwide best-seller, Paulo Coelho’s The Alchemist is a true phenomenon. Oprah, who is conducting Paulo’s first interview on American television, says she first heard about the book from Madonna in 1996. “So I thought, well, I’ve got to read this book that changed Madonna’s life. So then I passed it along to everybody I know. Everybody I know passed it along to everybody they know. And their children.”

Its strength and power come from its sense of life’s fragility and personal vulnerability, as it describes elements of beauty, grounding this story in the everyday – simple aspects of life and love. It challenges the stereotypes within society, exposing the heartache of ‘forbidden’ love, as the simple act of falling in love as a gay man or woman! Sixty Jane; And, The Strike On The Schlafeplatz Railroad "our Anchel" The Lady And Her Soul The Beautiful

This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1903. Excerpt: … THE OUTRAGEOUS MISS DAWN-DREAM ABOUT AN INCH PAST SEVEN IN THE MORNING MISS DAWN-DREAM was embroidering–I do not know what, exactly. It would belong to a trousseau presently–when completed. Perhaps it was a furisode''. The shoji were closed–for this was secret work, and close at hand were other shoji. Just outside was a mite of a cherry-tree, skilfully gnarled to look like much more of a cherry-tree. It had a thousand huge pink blossoms thick-studded on its small branches. But a bird had found standing-room among them. Now he trilled a note which made Miss Dawn-Dream drop the furisode–if that is what it was–and fly to the shoji. These she opened and bowed to the bird. 0 august first robin, she whispered, do you announce the spring 7 The bird looked curiously into her apartment. Dawn-Dream thought of the furisode. You must not look at–that, robin! She smiled up at him. What can an excellent little bird know about–wedding-things? But the bird looked very wise. Perhaps it is my honorable wedding you announce? whispered the girl, laughing. The bird nodded gravely. But–I have something to do–before! The robin pecked at a blossom. He liked DawnDream. Everybody did. You will wait? The bird satisfied her that he would. In Japan, you know, birds are people of more consequence than they are here. It was not five feet aross the tiny garden to the other ehoji I have mentioned. One of these had also opened. A face had appeared. Then a hand. In this was a brush. The artist also bowed to the bird. Then he saw Miss Dawn-Dream, and began to close his shoji and to pretend that he had not. For he had looked into his fiancee''s holy of holies–and this was excessively improper! Men had been killed for this. But–Dawn-Dream smiled at him! He halted–ques…

Eckhart Tolle, Author Of ‘A New Earth,’ Goes ‘Soul To Soul’ With Oprah (VIDEO)

As the author of best-selling books A New Earth and The Power of Now, Eckhart Tolle has written extensively about being fully present and developing an enlightened sense of awareness. Whether he’s discussing the secret to stress-free living or explaining how to truly connect with God, Tolle’s teachings have captivated many — especially fans of OWN’s “Super Soul Sunday.”

When Tolle sat down with Oprah for a profound conversation about consciousness, he also tackled some of life’s biggest questions in a rapid-fire segment.

Oprah says, “Finish this sentence: ‘The world needs…'”

“Spiritual awakening,” Tolle answers.

“‘I believe in…'” Oprah begins.

“Nothing in particular,” he says.

This answer derails Oprah’s questions as she bursts into laughter. “That cracks me up!” she tells Tolle.

Composing herself, she continues. “Okay. ‘Love is…'”

“The recognition of yourself, the essence of yourself, in the other,” Tolle says. “You recognize yourself in the other. The oneness. The recognition of oneness.”

“Wow. That is love. That’s a good definition,” Oprah says before continuing her questions. “‘I’m grateful for…'”

“I’m grateful for, always, this moment,” Tolle responds. “The now. No matter what form it takes.”

Beginning Sunday, March 23, at 12 p.m. ET, Oprah and Eckhart Tolle present a 10-part series airing for the first time on television, taking viewers on a chapter-by-chapter journey through “A New Earth.” The series debut airs immediately following the season premiere of “Super Soul Sunday.”

What Are You Hungry For?: The Chopra Solution to Permanent Weight Loss, Well-being, and Lightness of Soul

What Are You Hungry For?: The Chopra Solution to Permanent Weight Loss, Well-being, and Lightness of Soul

Basis for the upcoming PBS Special After promoting this message worldwide for thirty years, bestselling author Deepak Chopra focuses on the huge problem of weight control in America with exciting new concepts. “What Are You Hungry For?” is the breakthrough book that can bring weight under effortless control by linking it to personal fulfillment in every area of a reader’s life. What are you hungry for? Food? Love? Self-esteem? Peace? In this manual for “higher health,” based on the latest findings in both mainstream and alternative medicine, Deepak Chopra creates a vision of weight loss based on a deeper awareness of why people overeat – because they are trying to find satisfaction and wind up using food as a substitute for real fulfillment. Repudiating the failed approaches of crash dieting and all forms of deprivation, Chopra’s new book aims directly at the problem of finding fulfillment. When that problem is solved, he argues, normal eating falls into place automatically, and the entire system of mind and body achieves what it really desires. “Everyone’s life story is complicated, and the best intentions go astray because people find it hard to change,” writes Chopra. “Bad habits, like bad memories, stick around stubbornly when we wish they’d go away. But you have a great motivation working for you, which is your desire for happiness. I define happiness as the state of fulfillment, and everyone wants to be fulfilled. If you keep your eye on this, your most basic motivation, then the choices you make come down to a single question: “What am I hungry for?” Your true desire will lead you in the right direction. False desires lead in the wrong direction.” Wherever you are in life, this book will help point you in that right direction.

“RoboCop” Has Soul

Movie Review Jackie K Cooper
“RoboCop” (Sony/Columbia)

“RoboCop” is a movie whose time has come. In 1987 when this story was first projected on to movie screens it seemed to be just a futuristic idea that made for a fun film. Now in this age of drones it appears to be a bit more plausible. It certainly helps this new version of the film that the special effects can be so effective and that the cast is almost letter perfect down the line. Taken altogether this movie goes the 1987 original one better by having more soul in the story,

The movie starts with TV host Pat Novak (Samuel L Jackson) urging the country to get with the program and legalize the use of drones in America as well as other robotic equipment. This type of equipment is being used in other countries and Novak thinks the US is falling behind. His pleas seem to be falling on deaf ears because the country does not want a robot that does not have compassion and understanding going after people. There is too great a chance of mistakes being made.

When police detective Alex Murphy (Joel Kinnaman) is hurt in a car explosion, the head of OmniCorp sees an opportunity to change America’s mind. Raymond Sellars (Michael Keaton) puts all of the power of his company behind getting a machine that is also part human. He turns this project over to brilliant scientist Dr. Dennett Norton (Gary Oldman) who saves Murphy’s life by replacing his injured parts with machinery. In short he creates RoboCop.

The film spends a good bit of its running time studying the impact of this transformation on Murphy. It also shows how it affects his wife Clara (Abbie Cornish) and their son David (John Paul Ruttan). This impact on his relationship with his family gives heart to the film’s story and makes RoboCop more human.

Michael Keaton is very good as the treacherous Sellars. It takes a while to discover his true colors and that is partly due to Keaton’s likeability which he uses in full force. Still as good as Keaton is, Oldman is better. He is the perfect foil for Keaton and also creates someone upon whom the audience can rely. Coming in third in this acting sweepstakes is Jackie Earle Haley. He takes the small role of Sellar’s henchman and makes him an evil force in the film.

Kinnaman manages to hold his own against the “robot suit” that encompasses his body for most of the film. He still creates a living creature who holds on to his soul when all else seems lost. Cornish is stalwart as his wife.

The movie is rated PG-13 for profanity and violence.

A good story, excellent actors and believable special effects make this movie more than just run of the mill entertainment. This “tin man” has a heart, a brain and courage.

I scored “RoboCop” an imaginative 7 out of 10.

Farrah Abraham Announces New Year’s Resolution To Focus On ‘Mind And Soul’

Is Farrah Abraham ready to put mind over body in 2014?

The “Teen Mom” star announced in a recent video that her New Year’s resolution is to focus on her “mind and soul,” rather than her body in 2014.

Dec 27, 2013 | #NEWYEARS Resolution!? #CountDown 2014 Video @Keek by f1abraham on Keek.com

She rang in the new year by “kissing (her) freedom,” in the form of a shot.

In 2013, Abraham debuted her breast augmentation, a porno with James Deen, and a line of sex toys modeled after her own privates. She will begin 2014 by appearing on VH1’s “Couples Therapy” as the show’s first ever solo participant. She was initially supposed to appear on the show with boyfriend Brian Dawe, but he backed out at the last moment. Dawe later revealed to Starcasm that his relationship with Abraham had been a sham, concocted to get her on “Couples Therapy,” and that he could not, in good conscience, go through with the plan.
