Britain’s John Lewis Revamps Offer, Puts Urban Spin on Men’s Wear

LONDON — British department store John Lewis & Partners, where customers can find everything from lamps and frying pans to flat-screen TVs and computers, is putting a fresh spin on men’s wear in a bid to speak to multiple generations, street and sneaker devotees and necktie-free urbanites.
The retail stalwart, which also owns the upmarket supermarket chain Waitrose, has held relatively steady in the crisis that is sweeping the British high street. The store continues to invest in its store real estate, own-brand merchandise, staff training and has been swinging the spotlight onto own brand and exclusive products that customers cannot buy anywhere else.
It’s a tough time for British brick-and-mortar clothing retailers in particular. They’re falling victim to online competition, fast-fashion and streetwear competitors, as well as luxury brands keen to woo younger shoppers with entry-price merchandise such as sneakers and T-shirts.
Marks & Spencer is a prime example of the struggle so many are facing: On Thursday the retailer said in a terse statement that its managing director of clothing and home, Jill McDonald, was leaving the business after two years.

Disney Puts Fashionable Spin on Mouse Ears With Help of Vera Wang, Heidi Klum

HEAD GEAR: A new collection of designer Mickey and Minnie Mouse ears, featuring work with Vera Wang, Heidi Klum and Cupcakes and Cashmere, among other designers, artists and brands is set to begin rolling out later this month.
It’s a new spin on a beloved souvenir for kids and adults visiting Disney’s parks. The limited-edition headband ears will be sold at the Disneyland Resort in California, Walt Disney World Resort in Florida and Disney’s online shop. Harveys’ collaboration with Disney will be the first, launching May 24.
Disney will continue to release new designs on a monthly basis as part of a multiyear program.
“We were intentionally broad with the collaborators that we reached out to for this campaign,” said Lisa Baldzicki, vice president of merchandise and product development for Disney Parks, Experiences and Products. “We wanted to make sure this campaign was special and different from everything we’ve done.”
The company cast a wide net, tapping talent that is both emerging and heritage for creations that span traditional to high fashion.

Harveys’ collaboration with Disney on its mouse ears is the first of many to roll out for the entertainment company’s multiyear program.

Vin + Omi, London College of Fashion Spin Plastic Bottles into Clothes

ALL BOTTLED UP: Vin + Omi, the London-based label whose conceptual designs straddle luxury and sustainability, has partnered with London College of Fashion to launch Bin 2 Body, an initiative that will collect plastic bottles from the shows and turn them into fashion.
“We’re going to turn all of the plastic bottles into fabric and then, in August, we’re going to turn them into accessories. Then we’re going to partner up with a store and all the proceeds will go to a London salvage group,” said Omi.
Students from the college have designed bespoke bins that have been placed at the London Fashion Week Men’s show venues to collect used water bottles. The bins will be emptied daily and sent to processing labs that will transform the bottles into textiles with low microfiber release.
Vin + Omi’s designs will be showcased in September at London Fashion Week.
The Bin 2 Body scheme is part of a larger initiative at London College that began 10 years ago when the school launched a new M.A. course that put sustainability at the heart of the curriculum. London College of Fashion has since changed its curriculum across all courses to include elements of social responsibility and sustainability.

The photos look effortlessly beautiful but as two best friends from Montreal are proving in a viral Instagram post, a lot of hard work goes into staging one.

Since sharing the hilarious comparison pics two weeks ago, Tihan’s post has received over 183,000 “likes.” In an interview with The Huffington Post, the 19-year-old model said the pics were taken all in good fun on a recent vacation in Hawaii.

“When Elisabeth was taking the pics, all I could see was her bending in crazy angles to get the perfect shot,” she said. “It was so great, I needed to snap it. It shows what nobody sees on Instagram in all these stunning shots!”

Yep, clearly, behind every great Instagram is a friend or S.O. willing to contort, squat and bend to make it happen.

Teen’s Hilarious Senior Quote Puts New Spin On Coming Out Of The Closet

Maxwell Barrett wanted to leave high school “with a bang.” He succeeded.

The 18-year-old senior at Raritan High School in Hazlet, New Jersey, tweeted a screenshot of his yearbook photo and accompanying quote on Tuesday:

The quote, credited to “Unknown,” reads: “Of course I dress well, I didn’t spend all that time in the closet for nothing.”

“I wanted to go out with a bang,” Barrett, who is indeed very snappily dressed in the photo, told The Huffington Post. “I had never done sports, or clubs. I was always just an art student. I wanted to go out in a way people would remember me by!” He added that he didn’t come up with the quote completely on his own, but had rephrased a similar quote he’d seen online.

Barrett said he was “out” as gay to most people around him. Though he had never officially told his parents, he said he could tell that they already knew. “It was just more of a confirmation to [my parents] than a coming-out story,” he said.

And his parents’ reaction?

“They said it was the best one in the yearbook and that they were proud of me,” Barrett said. He mentioned that his classmates also loved it, and that even teachers had pulled him aside to congratulate him and comment on the quote.

Barrett said a yearbook supervisor initially told him they weren’t going to run the quote because of its “shock value.”

However, Hazlet Township Public School Superintendent Bernard Bragen could not confirm that happened.

“My understanding is that it was never pulled,” he said.

Bridget Barkan Puts A Modern Spin On A Judy Garland Classic In Honor Of Homeless LGBT Youth

Among gay audiences, Judy Garland is one of few performers who never seems to go out of style.

New York singer-actress Bridget Barkan proved that point at 2014’s “Night of a Thousand Judys” when she crooned a tender version of “As Long as He Needs Me,” which was introduced in the Broadway musical “Oliver!” and performed by Garland on her television series, “The Judy Garland Show,” in 1963.

Now in its fifth year, “Night of a Thousand Judys” — which is a special presentation of New York- and Los Angeles-based actor, writer and performer Justin Sayre’s variety show, “The Meeting,” and timed to coincide with LGBT Pride Month — will benefit the Ali Forney Center, an advocacy group dedicated to homeless lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) teens and young adults.

As in previous installments, performers from Broadway, television and downtown cabaret will hit New York’s Merkin Concert Hall at the Kaufman Center June 1 to croon songs made famous by Garland during her fabled career. The 2015 lineup includes Melissa Errico, Liz Callaway, Michael McElroy, Lauren Worsham and The Skivvies, among others.
