Canali Family Hires Designer, Stands by Namesake Company

MILAN — The Canali family is standing behind their 84-year-old namesake men’s wear company.
With a view to further expanding its collections, from formal to sportier looks and accessories, Canali has tapped Hyun-Wook Lee as its exclusive in-house designer.
“This is a very important step for us as it’s the first time we single out one designer to oversee all categories, and evolve the offer,” general manager Stefano Canali said Friday at the company’s showroom in Milan, ahead of the brand’s presentation on Saturday. Given Lee’s recent arrival at the company, his first collection for Canali will bow during Milan Men’s Fashion Week in June.
Born in Seoul in 1973, Lee comes to Canali with 17 years of experience in fashion, having worked at Berluti in Paris and contributed to its foray into men’s apparel. He previously worked at Ermenegildo Zegna, Versace and Gianfranco Ferré. Lee graduated in design and fine arts from the University of Chung-Ang in Seoul and has a background in art. He has created sculptures in wood and metal, designed jewelry and painted fabrics. In 2000, he specialized in fashion design at Milan’s Istituto Marangoni.

Julia Roberts Stands Behind Student Fighting for LGBTQ Rights Under Trump: ‘I Want All Students to Feel Safe’

As a transgender student leader in the conservative town of St. Joseph’s, Missouri, Miguel Johnson has witnessed firsthand the dramatic impact Donald Trump‘s presidency has had not just on his high school, but on the attitude of the entire town.

Just weeks before the election, Johnson, a GLSEN student ambassador, spoke onstage alongside Julia Roberts at the GLSEN Respect Awards, an event benefitting the national organization that works to keep schools safe for LGBTQ youth. Even among his brave young co-presenters, 16-year-old Johnson stood out.

“I had the pleasure of presenting with Miguel at last year’s GLSEN Respect Awards, and Miguel, like all the students I meet there, is smart, kind and incredibly brave to live their life openly and honestly at such a young age,” Roberts said in a statement to PEOPLE. “As a parent, I want all students to feel safe and protected at school, and I stand with Miguel and trans students across the country. You are loved.”

At the time, Johnson was cautiously optimistic about the upcoming election, which for the first time in history featured a Republican candidate who had openly acknowledged the LGTQ community. Trump even suggested Caitlyn Jenner would be welcome to use the bathroom of her choosing at Trump Tower.

“Before Trump got elected, he always said he was totally for LGBTQ students, because they’re people too and they deserve an education,” Johnson tells PEOPLE. “And then after he got elected, he was basically like, ‘Just kidding, I lied.’ “

On Feb. 22, President Trump overruled his own education secretary Betsy DeVos to rescind Obama-era protections for transgender students that had allowed them to use bathrooms corresponding with their gender identity. Instead, the Trump administration argued it should be up to the states and local school districts to establish “educational policy.”

Some states, like Johnson’s native Missouri, are already working to pass laws that would force students to use restrooms not based on the gender they identify with, but on the gender that appears on their birth certificates. “Since the recession of the transgender-inclusive Title IX guidance and introduction of two anti-trans state bills (HB202 & SB98) in Missouri, Miguel’s school has become less supportive and is now signaling potential roadblocks ahead,” GLSEN Director of Communications Chris Tuttle tells PEOPLE.

Johnson blames Trump’s flip-flopping on LGBTQ issues with changing the atmosphere of acceptance in his small town. “The feeling went from, ‘Trump is supporting LGBTQ students, so I should too,’ to ‘Well, if he doesn’t care, I don’t need to either.’ “

RELATED: Gavin Grimm Says the Battle Over Bathroom Use “Should Never Have Happened”

Dylan, another trans student at Johnson’s school, who asked that his last name remain anonymous, has noticed the same changes. “Once Trump became a candidate, my friends in the LGBTQ community heard more negative things being said about them openly. They’ve been threatened more, not only for how they identify, but also their race and even their religion.”

Dylan has also noticed that students seem to be more comfortable using offensive language in casual conversation. “I’ve heard more of it, not just directed towards my friends and me, but also just used in casual conservations, as if it were perfectly fine. Like if a person does something awkward in class, someone might say, ‘That’s so gay.’ “

Overall, hate crimes in nine U.S. metropolitan areas rose more than 20% last year, spurred by the heated emotions that arose during the presidential campaign, leading crimes researcher Brian Levin recently told NBC News. Crimes against Muslims and lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people accounted for much of the hate crime growth, the researcher found. Many more cases, especially in small conservative towns like Miguel and Dylan’s, go unreported.

Trump’s rhetoric on issues like race, religion and national origin, could have influenced the number of incidents, as well as the number of incident reports, says Levin. “That, coupled with significant coverage, might have encouraged two things to happen: Individuals who vary in motivation, from hardcore bigots to those just seeking a thrill, seeking something to do, as well as victims who felt that they should report this because they’re not alone,” he adds.

Moving forward, Johnson says, “I’m still trying to figure out what I can do to feel okay and how to make my friends and fellow students feel okay, and honestly I don’t have an answer. There’s not an easy solution, especially when the person with the most power is messing stuff up. “

In the meantime, Johnson is doing what he can to encourage fellow LGBTQ students to speak up. “The more voices, the more heard,” he explains. Sadly, Johnson says he knows many students who were “just starting to be comfortable enough to come out in school,” but have “started to back down” since the election. Dylan has noticed the same pattern.

“So I’ve really just been encouraging them not to do that, because it’s the same as us going back in time,” Miguel says. “We need to be progressive. People don’t realize that these things affect people they know and care about. So I’m hoping that the more people come out and speak up, the more people will start realize this affects them too.”

Selena Gomez Stands Behind ’13 Reasons Why’ Amid Controversy

Netflix’s “13 Reasons Why” gained popularity almost instantly after being released on the streaming platform March 31. But as more and more people are watching the series, controversy has surfaced surrounding its sensitive subject matter

“13 Reasons Why,” based on the best-selling book by Jay Asher, follows the story of Hannah Baker (Katherine Langford), who takes her own life after facing numerous traumatic experiences in high school. She records 13 tapes to give to the individuals she says played some sort of role in her decision, leaving her friend Clay (Dylan Minnette) to uncover the harsh reality behind her heartbreaking death.

Due to the fact that the show is being binge-watched by the youngest generations, many, including experts in the field of suicide and assault, are worried that the graphic content of Brian Yorkey’s series is simply too much.

Now, executive producer Selena Gomez is speaking out about her decision to join the project and put it out into the world. During an interview with E! News at a WE Day event Thursday, the 24-year-old said she’s “a little overwhelmed and very surprised” by the success of the show and stands behind its message to inform teens about the harsh realities of the world.

“I believed in the project for so long and I understood what the message was,” she said. “I just wanted it to come across in a way that kids would be frightened, but confused ― in a way that they would talk about it because it’s something that’s happening all the time. So, I’m overwhelmed that it’s doing as well as it’s doing.”

One of the show’s stars, Kate Walsh ― who plays Hannah’s mother ― recently spoke with HuffPost about the controversy, saying, “Parents and teachers and students [should] watch this and have conversations about sexual assault, about bullying, about LGBTQ issues, race issues, gender issues, suicide, depression and mental health, because largely in our country as we see now, it’s still in the shroud of shame or silence.”

There is already buzz that “13 Reasons Why” will receive a second season, despite being based on a single novel. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Netflix is close to renewing the series, with sources saying that “a writers room for the sophomore run has been up and running for a few weeks.”

When asked about a Season 2, Gomez smirked and told E!, “Maybe?”

We’ll have to wait and see what happens next.

So THAT’S What ‘OK’ Stands For

”OK” may be one of the most commonly used words in America.

Want to grab a drink after work? OK. How are you feeling? I’m OK. Justin Bieber is the best singer of all time. OK …

But did you know that every time you throw “OK” around you’re using the 1840s slang equivalent of phrases like “bae” or “it’s lit fam”?

As explained in the Mental Floss video above, late lexicographer Allen Walker Read traced OK’s origin back to a Boston newspaper editor who in 1839 used the initials as a trendy, clever way of saying “oll korrect,” or, more accurately, “all correct.”

The editor was playing into a popular 19th century trend in which writers would playfully abbreviate and misspell their words. For example, they’d use “KG” to say “know go,” which means “no go.” It’s similar to how people today use “bae” for “baby” or “before anyone else,” or how millennials will text “it’s lit fam” to describe to their friends that something is amazing or fun.

But “OK” came around at a time when catchy phrases are most important: a presidential election.

During Martin Van Buren’s 1840 bid for president, his campaign turned his nickname, “Old Kinderhook,” into a hip and catchy slogan: “He’s Old Kinderhook and he’s oll korrect.”

More than 170 years later, “OK” has all but taken over.

Want to know the rest of “OK’s” history? Watch Mental Floss’s video above, OK?

Mike Huckebee Stands Up for the Duggars… and Jeb Bush?

No one ever said the Duggars were perfect except the Duggars. Well, not perfect, just better than you. So, while it might be ghoulish fun to read that their show has been removed from TLC’s schedule, I remind myself that forgiveness is an obligation, at least in my faith. I can’t speak to anyone else’s crazy crap.

Naturally, the Duggars have unpleasant secrets — whom the gods would destroy, they first make yeech.

So we’re all — Christians, I mean — stuck with the Duggars. But the person who’s really stuck with them is former Fox News personality Mike Huckabee. They’re all over his presidential campaign. Which is why he stood up for them this morning, in a Facebook post that already had 1.7 million likes.

The funny thing about Huckabee’s post, though, is if you go through it, and change the family name from “Duggar” to “Bush,” it pretty much sums up how the entire Republican Party feels about Jeb Bush, George W. and the hundreds of thousands of people George W. killed in Iraq.

Maybe Mike can use it when he endorses Jeb at the convention.

Look:

Janet and I want to affirm our support for the Duggar/Bush family. Josh’s/George’s actions when he was an underage teen/ President of the United States are as he described them himself, ‘inexcusable’/’hypothetical,’ but that doesn’t mean ‘unforgivable.’ He and his family dealt with it and were honest and open about it with the victims and the authorities. No purpose whatsoever is served by those who are now trying to discredit Josh/George or his family by sensationalizing the story.

Good people make mistakes and do regrettable and even disgusting things.

The reason that the law protects disclosure of many actions on the part of a minor/President of the United States is that the society has traditionally understood something that today’s blood-thirsty media does not understand — that being a minor/President means that one’s judgement is not mature.

No one needs to defend Josh’s/George’s actions as a teenager/Commander-in-chief, but the fact that he confessed his sins to those he harmed, sought help, and has gone forward to live a responsible and circumspect life as an adult/recluse is testament to his family’s authenticity and humility.

Those who have enjoyed revealing this long ago sins in order to discredit the Duggar/Bush family have actually revealed their own insensitive bloodthirst, for there was no consideration of the fact that the victims wanted this to be left in the past and ultimately a judge/Dick Cheney had the information on file destroyed–not to protect Josh/George, but the innocent victims.

Janet and I love Jim Bob/George Poppy and Michelle/Barbara and their entire family. They are no more perfect a family than any family, but their Christian witness is not marred in our eyes because following Christ is not a declaration of our perfection, but of HIS perfection.

It is precisely because we are all sinners that we need His grace and His forgiveness. We have been blessed to receive God’s love and we would do no less than to extend our love and support for our friends. In fact, it is such times as this, when real friends show up and stand up.

Today, Janet and I want to show up and stand up for our friends. Let others run from them. We will run to them with our support.

Bush/Huckabee ’16! You read it here first.

The First Trailer For ‘Selma’ Stands Up

“What happens when a man stands up and says enough is enough?” That’s the money quote in the first trailer for Ava DuVernay’s “Selma,” which focuses on a three-month stretch in 1965 when Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. organized a campaign to ensure equal voting rights for all men and women.

Before today, “Selma” stood as the last unknown quantity of awards season; now, with the new trailer and a forthcoming 30-minute preview of footage at the AFI Festival in Los Angeles, its a fresh contender on the block. David Oyelowo stars as King, but the cast for this one is big: Tom Wilkinson, Cuba Gooding Jr., Alessandro Nivola, Giovanni Ribisi, Common, Carmen Ejogo, Tessa Thompson, Andre Holland, Keith Stanfield, Wendell Pierce, Niecy Nash, Lorraine Toussaint Tim Roth and Oprah Winfrey, who also produced the film.

“She moved the waters like Moses: She held up her staff, and they parted, and we were able to go through and make the movie,” DuVernay told Yahoo about Winfrey. “She was a producer, and that’s working on financing, physical production, casting, permits, insurances — it gets really boring and unsexy at some point. But I’m able to say I’ve heard Oprah Winfrey on an insurance bond call. She did it all.”

Watch the “Selma” trailer above. “Selma” opens in New York and Los Angeles on Christmas Day; a nationwide bow is set for Jan. 9, 2015.
