Stella McCartney, Christopher Raeburn Among Winners of Inaugural CO10 Sustainability Award

GREEN MACHINES: Stella McCartney, Christopher Raeburn and Bottletop are among the 10 fashion businesses that have been awarded the inaugural CO10 Leadership Award, which recognizes companies that put sustainability at their core.
The award is presented by Common Objective, a network that connects more than 10,000 professionals in the fashion, retail and textile industries to share knowledge and best sustainability practices. It will be awarded virtually in the spirit of sustainability.
The other winners are Osklen, Indigenous, Outland Denim, Mayamiko, Sonica Sarna Design, Ethical Apparel Africa and The Rajlakshmi Cotton Mills.
“The industry has seen an incredible amount of traction over the past year, from increased consumer demand and government engagement, to the abundance of new entrants that focus on sustainability,” said Harold Tillman, former chairman of the British Fashion Council.
He added that the overall CO Leadership Awards are aimed at creating a milestone moment for fashion to champion innovators.
A panel of judges, including representatives from Farfetch, Kering and Vivienne Westwood, selected the 10 winners.
The winners were chosen based on their ability to marry sustainability strategies with commercial ones. The key criteria, according to organizers, were mission, business model, products and services, impact, sustainability roadmap and communication strategy.
Not only will the 10 brands be

THE GOOD FIGHT: Stella McCartney has tapped Sofia Vergara for her annual Breast Cancer Awareness campaign. The campaign has two parts, with the first launching Monday and the second to be released in October.
The first of the two-part campaign has images of Vergara wearing McCartney’s limited edition bra and brief set named Rose Romancing, which will launch on the brand’s website and social channels.
The campaign is meant to highlight the global impact of breast cancer and underline the need for preventative education and advanced breast cancer care.
Sales of the lingerie set will benefit the Linda McCartney Centre in Liverpool, The Hello Beautiful Foundation in London, and Memorial Sloan Kettering in the U.S. The money will go towards early detection programs and treatments for breast cancer patients.
The limited-edition Rose Romancing set, a rose, lace embellished triangle bra and bikini brief, will be available to order from Stella McCartney stores on Oct. 1.
The set will also be available online at Net-a-porter, Saks Fifth Avenue, Harrods, Harvey Nichols, Le Bon Marché and Shopbop. The triangle bra retails at 110 pounds, and the bikini briefs at 85 pounds.

Stella Jean Resort 2019

Flamboyant, colorful and a bit extravagant. The resort season was all about a joyful and happy mood at Stella Jean.
The designer delivered a cute collection featuring a charming balance between masculine and feminine elements.
Mannish suits and workwear-inspired overalls were embellished with unexpected details, such as fringed trimmings and patches of embroidered parrots, while the hyper feminine midi dresses were crafted from mannish striped shirting fabrics.
An energetic Hawaiian tropical pattern developed in different colors was splashed on lightweight robe coats, slightly flared pants and wrap frocks, while a geometric attitude was introduced in the collection via macro gingham cotton used for both logo camp shirts, skirt suits infused with a certain Western feel, as well as chic short jackets matched with flared skirts.
The charming and summery lineup was completed by bijoux developed in collaboration with Italian brand Rosantica and Philippe Model’s cool fringed and beaded sneakers.

Stella McCartney Brings Meditation to Galeries Lafayette

LOOKING AHEAD: Recasting the age-old tradition of shopping therapy, Stella McCartney is introducing meditation to Galeries Lafayette. The British designer’s “Sanctuary of Stillness” installation runs from Sept. 6 to Oct. 12 in the Paris department store as part of the group’s broader environmental push, called “Go for Good.”
Along with her environmental credentials, McCartney will also bring a film by David Lynch exploring links between meditation and creativity, as well as window displays from London furniture designer Faye Toogood. The program includes sports classes led by a hologram of McCartney in the Boulevard Haussmann flagship.
Family-owned Galeries Lafayette has jumped into the task of reinventing traditional department store commerce to adapt to the rise in online business, with events geared to younger crowds and redesigning stores. On top of the struggle to draw customers, retailers are under pressure to address social and environmental issues seriously.
“It’s the first time I’ve seen an initiative of this size,” said McCartney, of the “Go for Good” program’s responsible consumption bent. In addition to her own T-shirts, sweatshirts and jackets in organic cotton and recycled materials, several hundred brands are involved, selling items ranging from yoga bras by Ba&sh to Nuvola rings from Pomellato carrying fair mined

EXCLUSIVE: Stella McCartney’s Sketch for Meghan Markle’s Wedding Reception

PLAY IT AGAIN, STELLA: The Duchess of Sussex — her family and wedding guests — just couldn’t get enough of Stella McCartney this weekend. Although McCartney wasn’t the official dresser for Saturday’s nuptials, she certainly came close, creating outfits for the day under her Bespoke label.
After changing out of her white Givenchy Haute Couture gown, Meghan Markle moved onto Stella McCartney for the evening reception, by all accounts a lively affair during which the bride broke with tradition and made a speech.

She wore a sleeveless white silk crepe gown with a high collar, and bare shoulders, pairing the dress with Aquazzura satin shoes that had baby blue soles. The clean lines and silk fabric of McCartney’s dress echoed the minimal, unembellished dress she wore for her walk down the aisle.
“I am so proud and honored to have been chosen by the Duchess of Sussex to make her evening gown and represent British design,” said McCartney. “It has truly been one of the most humbling moments of my career and I am so proud of all the team on this stunning sunny royal day.”

Stella McCartney shared exclusively with WWD the sketch she made for Meghan Markle’s evening

Stella & Dot Aims to Change Imagery of Women

Direct sales firm Stella & Dot has partnered with All Woman Project for a campaign aimed at diversifying the imagery of women in the media.
The campaign and partnership are in honor of National Women’s History Month. Further, the firm said it “pledges to eliminate all Photoshopping on women’s faces or bodies that would alter their size, ethnic appearance, signs of aging, scars or skin blemishes.”
The campaign features six women: Sophia Roe, chef, nutritionist and wellness and beauty influencer; Natasha David, mixologist and Nitecap owner; Michelle Kennedy, chief executive officer and cofounder of Peanut, a social networking app for new mothers; Katie Sturino, founder of 12ish Style blog and founder of beauty brand Megababe; Dee Poku, founder of WIE, an influential women’s leadership network, and of Other Festival, an all female festival, and Clémentine Desseaux, model, activist and cofounder of All Woman Project.
Jessica Herrin, ceo and founder of Stella & Dot, said she chose to work with All Woman Project because “I was struck at the core when I saw their work and images, [as well as] how important it is for women to see the inclusiveness of what beauty and strength really looks like, rather than an image that we’re

Stella McCartney, Graydon Carter Speakers at Copenhagen Fashion Summit

SUSTAINABLE STAR POWER: Stella McCartney and Graydon Carter are scheduled to speak at the Copenhagen Fashion Summit, which takes place May 15 to 16.
Eva Kruse, chief executive officer of Global Fashion Agenda which organizes the event, noted that McCartney had topped the speaker wish list since the summit was first organized in 2009.
“She is the impersonation of our vision for a sustainable fashion industry and the match simply couldn’t be better,” said Kruse.
“Another person whom I’ve always admired deeply is Graydon Carter — one of the most legendary magazine editors of all time,” added Kruse, of the former Vanity Fair editor in chief who retired last year.
The summit, which takes place in the Jean Nouvel-designed Copenhagen Concert Hall, will extend over two days for the first time this year.
Summit organizers last week said that the event will be hosted by model and entrepreneur Amber Valletta and Tim Blanks.

Stella McCartney to Dress Justin Timberlake for Super Bowl

Whether the game goes to the Patriots or the Eagles at Sunday’s Super Bowl, Stella McCartney will have scored a major fashion wear coup — ahem, touchdown — in front of roughly 111 million viewers. Justin Timberlake is to wear a custom McCartney design for his halftime performance, as the two collaborated on a look inspired by his upcoming “Man of the Woods” album.

Stella McCartney designed a custom look for Justin Timberlake’s Super Bowl halftime performance.

It consists of a faux napa fringed jacket with an organic cotton shirt featuring landscape artwork by British artist Martin Ridley, as well as a single-breasted jacket and matching trousers done in Prince of Wales check and camouflage splatter, both made from repurposed wool fabric. Dressing the halftime performer for an event that routinely draws one of the largest television audiences of the year is a huge platform for McCartney’s burgeoning men’s wear line, which launched in December 2016. The Super Bowl kick off starts at 6:30 p.m. EST on NBC.

EXCLUSIVE: Stella McCartney Takes the Plunge Into Men’s Swimwear

STAR OF THE SEA: Stella McCartney is plunging into men’s swimwear with a debut collection that launches Tuesday in partnership ISA SpA, the Italian textile manufacturer, WWD has learned.
Animal and tropical prints — including a jaunty parrot one — from the ready-to-wear collection, star embroidery and a geometric pattern have been cast onto boxers, briefs, rash guards, cover-ups, towels and sustainable beach totes made in Kenya. The color palette includes lavender, yellow, blush pink and bottle green for the organic cotton and recycled nylon fabrics.
McCartney said because she designs swimwear for women, it was only right that she should do the same for men, and that launching the collection felt like a natural progression.
“It’s a fantastic opportunity to broaden the men’s collection. I wanted to explore an area of a man’s wardrobe that is important and is perhaps slightly under-designed at times. And I wanted to bring the personality of the man into swimwear, so the relationship of the man and the woman on the beach has consistency.”
The collection will drop at the designer’s boutiques and on her web site and will also be stocked at stores including Harrods, Matchesfashion.com and Mr Porter. Prices range from 155 pounds to 255 pounds for

Stella McCartney Men’s Spring 2018

For her third see-now-buy-now men’s collection, Stella McCartney took Ibiza as her muse, dressing her man in loose-fitting trousers and breezy knits, hippie fringes and parrot prints.
“It’s a celebration of summer with lightness and unexpected colors — and there’s a hippy-trippy side, too,” said the designer who whipped up a pastel lilac suit with loose, pooling trousers. Based on one of her father Paul McCartney’s suits it has a tighter fit with buttons that are set closer together.
Other standout pieces included a chunky cardigan with deep patch pockets and sun setting on the back, an oversize faux suede jacket with fringes, and lineup of boxy cotton shirts, some with the Stella McCartney logo, others done in fluorescent green and others still covered in parrots.
In keeping with her sustainability efforts, cashmere sweaters were made from recycled bits that would otherwise have ended up on the cutting room floor, while the fringed jacket was made from Alter Suede, which McCartney also uses for her women’s collections.
The collection wasn’t all sea, sand and Seventies sunsets, though. McCartney also drew inspiration from the artwork of Pater Sato, the Japanese airbrush artist. His bright colors and otherworldly ladies appeared on shirts or the linings of

Kylie Minogue, Haim Pick Sides; Jerry Seinfeld Doesn’t at Stella McCartney

EARLY BIRDS: Stella McCartney softened the Monday morning blow by offering coffee and juices to her guests, ahead of her show at the Opera Garnier. The hour proved divisive.
“Unless I’m on a project requiring an early start, I’m definitely an evening person,” said Kylie Minogue, who danced the previous evening away at the Irvin Penn celebration, making the most of the two-day break away from working on her next album.
“Every morning is a boogie morning,” countered girls-about-town rock group Haim, who were showing off their Stella McCartney shoes, which they’d certainly put to good use over the weekend. While in town, sisters Este, Danielle and Alana said they were on an eating tour in Paris, chasing “every cheese known to man” before going on tour in 2018.
Funny man Jerry Seinfeld, starring in his own Netflix special “Jerry before Seinfeld,” held a more equalitarian view. “I’m a morning, and evening person,” he said. “I enjoy all the hours,” even the jetlag ones, as he and wife Jessica had flown in for the show. “That’s what you do for your friends: schlep to Paris and enjoy the city, for them,” she quipped.

Stella McCartney Signs New Swim and Lingerie License

Stella McCartney has a new swim and lingerie license with ISA Spa, the Italian textile firm that will manufacture, develop and distribute the designer’s lingerie and swimwear collections as of fall 2018. Under the agreement, ISA Spa will produce the  collections in line with McCartney’s brand’s sustainable ethics.
“Lingerie has been a personal obsession of mine for a long time and I have always been inspired by it. While for swimwear I want to encourage women to feel confident and comfortable about themselves and in what they are wearing,” McCartney said. “This is an important new chapter for us at Stella McCartney and I feel that we have found the perfect partner for us, who really understands our brand and will bring together quality, ability and a high level of commitment to take us to this next chapter.”
McCartney launched lingerie in 2008 and the range has grown to include sleepwear, the annual Breast Cancer Awareness Month limited-edition set, and a double mastectomy post-operative bra. The latter two will be supported by a Breast Cancer Awareness campaign throughout October. Swim launched in 2016.
Prices for the swim collection range from $ 95 to $ 425 and lingerie is priced between $ 35 and $ 450.

Stella McCartney Partners With Bolt Threads On Sustainable Material Development

Stella McCartney has a new collaborative initiative with Bolt Threads, a biotech company based in the San Francisco Bay Area that specializes in advancing sustainable materials. The firm develops fibers from scratch based on proteins found in nature, as well as clean, closed-loop manufacturing processes. An example is vegan-friendly silk created from yeast, which will be implemented into McCartney’s work.
“When I first started in fashion design I never thought there would be a day like this, where we would arrive with such an important moment when technology is fused with fashion, one of the most harmful industries to the environment,” said the designer. “Now is the time to search for answers, for alternatives. For me, I’ve always struggled with the use of silk and finding Bolt has been a life changing and career changing moment for me.”
The initial product of the partnership between McCartney and Bolt will be a one-of-a-kind gold shift dress commissioned for the Museum of Modern Art’s upcoming design exhibition, “Items: Is Fashion Modern?,” opening October 1 through January 28.

Stella McCartney Men’s Fall 2017

Stella McCartney is steaming ahead with her see-now-buy-now men’s wear, which launched last November, and her winter collection draws on her many worlds — women’s wear, The Beatles, her father Sir Paul McCartney and her efforts to work in an environmentally conscious way.
She said her “weird music heritage” made her think about how men used to dress — and all the fun they had doing it. “I looked at my dad and his peers, at punk, at rave, at different moments in music history. There was so much more exploration,” McCartney said, adding that in the past men felt freer to express themselves, and to play around with their wardrobes more.
Tailoring is a big part of the collection: There are boxy suit jackets with patch pockets, narrow trousers with built-in belts or cargo pockets on the leg and a double-breasted camel coat with rounded shoulders. “I’m a massive fan of the camel coat – that’s the New Yorker in me,” she said. There’s a camel duffel coat, too.
A more formal dark jacket with a bright red shawl collar is based on one of her father’s from the Seventies, which he had made. The short boots with the little ridge at

Sustainability Set Takes Front Row at Stella McCartney

WHAT’S YOUR CAUSE: François-Henri Pinault, the head of Stella McCartney’s parent company Kering, has frequently stated his commitment to making the fashion business more socially responsible and environmentally sustainable. Sitting front-row at McCartney’s fall show, Pinault wasn’t the only activist on call.
Guest Pamela Anderson is a long-time devotee of McCartney’s animal friendly faux-leather shoes and accessories. “These days I’m just running around trying to save animals and the people I love,” Anderson said at the show.
The former actress has a foundation dedicated to animal rights as well as survivors of sexual violence. In recent months, Anderson has paid a number of visits to Wikileaks founder Julian Assange at the Ecuadorian Embassy in London.
During a visit to France last year, Anderson addressed the nation’s parliament in support of banning the force-feeding of geese to produce foie gras. “This is a national treasure for some reason—but if people knew what these geese suffer, if they saw the videos they couldn’t eat it,” she told WWD.
Arizona Muse said she had ramped up her charitable engagements as well, most recently committing to work with the group Synchronicity Earth. “It’s a charity for women and the environment,” the model said. “I’ve never seen such integrity

Stella McCartney Pre-Fall 2017

How to get a substantial fashion and celebrity crowd to Harlem on a Tuesday night when the competition is President Obama’s farewell speech? Have Stella McCartney host. She staged her pre-fall fashion show soiree at the historic Cotton Club on 125th Street in New York City on Jan. 10, luring editors and famous friends, including Jerry and Jessica Seinfeld, Julianne Moore, Naomi Watts, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Jeff and Justine Koons and Rachel Feinstein, well north of where industry events are typically staged. McCartney had wagered a silent bet with most of the guests: “You’ve never been to the Cotton Club, have you? “ she asked a trio of long-term New York editors, who confirmed her suspicion. “And now you can die saying you’ve been to the Cotton Club.”
Not a bad thing to check off the list. The venue’s atmosphere transported to a time when going uptown for a drink was an occasion, with its smoky red-lit interior, lush greenery, jazz musicians clad in white tie and waitstaff in white tuxedo jackets. “The fusion of fashion and music with this venue is so historical,” said McCartney of how she chose the Cotton Club, noting that the collection shared its romance and throwback

Stella Abrera: Ballerina on a Double Mission

2014-09-14-StellaAbreradancingRatmanskyPhotoCreditGeneSchiavone.jpg

Ballet history is usually made in the august opera houses of St. Petersburg, Moscow, London, Paris and New York. But these days historic moments in ballet are taking place elsewhere: last week Misty Copeland made her debut as Odette-Odile in Swan Lake with American Ballet Theatre in Brisbane, one of very few black ballerinas ever to be cast in this iconic role. And this week, another distinctive ABT ballerina, Filipino American Stella Abrera returns to her homeland to debut in Giselle with Ballet Philippines, and to call attention to the continuing plight of children in Guiuan, the coastal town on Leyte hardest hit by typhoon Haiyan late last year.

Ballet to the People caught up with Abrera by phone just as Giselle rehearsals were wrapping up in Manila and she was headed for the airport, bound for Guiuan, to visit the construction site of a new school being built by disaster-relief organization Operation USA and Honeywell.

Two days prior, she had just flown in from Australia, fresh from ABT’s first season in Brisbane where critics lauded her performances in Twyla Tharp’s Bach Partita and Alexei Ratmansky’s Seven Sonatas. Arguably the most versatile of ABT’s current crop of soloists, the coolly elegant Abrera tackles the classics and more hard-edged contemporary work with refinement and aplomb. Finely etched body lines, delicate, precise footwork and exquisite épaulement are Abrera’s trademarks – though she also has a great flair for comedy, evident in her uproarious portrayal of Hermia in The Dream, Frederick Ashton’s distillation of A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

2014-09-14-AbreraGiselleMyrtaGeneSchiavone.jpg

One of her best known roles is that of Myrta, Queen of the Wilis, in Giselle. Between the hours of midnight and dawn, these specters of jilted maidens, who died before their wedding day, prowl the woods and torture unsuspecting men. Behind Abrera’s steely self-assurance as Myrta, we sense a tragic grief.

The greatest dramatic challenge in all of classical ballet is undoubtedly the lead role of Giselle: the transformation from naive peasant girl in Act I to strong-willed revenant in Act II, by way of the famous mad scene that brings down the curtain on Act I.

Adding to the gala performance buzz will be Abrera’s return to the Philippines, where she was born and where she still has strong family ties, though she grew up and trained principally in California.

Gold medal award winner at the Royal Academy of Dance’s Adeline Genée Awards in London in 1995, Abrera joined American Ballet Theatre the following year.

She and her husband Sascha Radetsky performed the Giselle Act II pas de deux on tour with Daniel Ulbricht’s “Stars of American Ballet” last summer. But, she notes, “preparing the full-length ballet is a far more fulfilling experience. Telling the story from the beginning, with a full cast of players, allows everyone in the theater, including myself, to become invested in the characters. When Act II comes around, the atmosphere is more magical and heart-rending. I feel I can more fully flesh out my characterization of Giselle when I can tell her story from beginning to end.”

This homecoming is poignant for Abrera for another reason: “Soon after I received the invitation to dance in Manila, super typhoon Haiyan ripped through the Central Philippines. The reports of devastation and suffering were staggering, and I knew my upcoming visit to the country needed to somehow contribute to the relief effort.”

Abrera learned that child labor rates – already high in that part of the world – are rising in the typhoon-hit areas, as many children have been orphaned, families’ livelihoods threatened, and schools destroyed. Increasing access to education for the children affected by the typhoon is a top priority in combating rising child labor rates. However, the current conditions for education are sometimes verging on hazardous. Many classes are held in overcrowded, makeshift schoolhouses, and basic supplies are scarce.

Abrera has partnered with Operation USA to help them rebuild Guiuan’s essential infrastructure. She formed Steps Forward for the Philippines, a charity charged with providing material and supplies for their new school.

Friends, fans and fellow dancers have responded to Abrera’s appeal to “step forward,” and to date a little over half of the $ 30,000 she is targeting has been raised.

2014-09-14-WhitesideDonQEspadaPhotoCreditMartySohl.jpg

One of Abrera’s strongest supporters in this campaign is fellow ABT dancer, James Whiteside, who travels with her to Manila to partner her in Giselle. He dances the role of the perfidious Prince Albrecht, who pretends to be a commoner so he can woo village maidens, even while engaged to a noblewoman. Whiteside has danced many iconic lead male roles since he joined American Ballet Theatre in 2012 from Boston Ballet. (Ballet to the People was particularly moved by his interpretation of the Artist in Alexei Ratmansky’s Chamber Symphony, from the epic Shostakovich Trilogy.) The pair will be supported by Ballet Philippines’ Rita Angela Winder as Myrta and Richardson Yadao as Hilarion, the feisty gamekeeper whose love for Giselle goes unrequited, and who is sent dancing to his death by the fearsome Myrta and her gang.

Abrera and Whiteside headline the gala performance of Giselle on September 19th. Ballet Philippines’ Katherine Trofeo and Jean Marc Cordero, Denise Parungao and Earl John Arisola will take over the roles of Giselle and Albrecht for the remaining four shows through September 21st.

But before the curtain goes up on the innocent young village girl and her deceitful lover, Abrera takes an important trip to Guiuan, Leyte, and hopes that her fans will be inspired to help her on her mission:
