Ray-Ban Once Again Taps Steven Klein for Ad Campaign

Luxottica’s Ray-Ban has tapped Steven Klein to lense their spring ad campaign.
The 2018 campaign, shot on location in Marfa, Tex., is made up of four images, each embodying a different Ray-Ban style and is a continuation of the 2017 campaign, also shot by Klein.
While the 2017 campaign’s inspiration was about people leaving their life behind, “the new campaign is about freedom and letting go,” Klein explained. “Living in turbulent times, one of the things that evokes that for many people is a road trip. This campaign represents that no matter what hardships come your way, you can be an individual, go on your own path and experience fun, optimism, creativity, love…everybody’s looking for their own personal freedom.”
The new assortment consists of three sun options — the marshal, wayfarer blaze and aviator evolve — as well as one optical option — the hexagonal. Each gets their own narrative under Klein’s direction, “a musician and an artist; a young female film director; a social activist, and a young Jack Kerouac.”
The updated range is available on ray-ban.com and retails from $ 163 to $ 188. The campaign launches today first on ray-ban.com and then on the brand’s social channels.

Why Steven Spielberg Rushed to Make The Post in 43 Days in Trump Era: ‘I Believe Truth Tellers Are Heroes’

When Steven Spielberg signed on to direct The Post in March, he planned to kick off production in May and have the retelling of the Washington Post‘s 1971 decision to publish the Pentagon Papers ready in time for a December release.

“We wanted to tell a true story about a time when an administration attempted through the courts to squash the free press, and at the pleasure of the Nixon administration, stopped facts and the truth from being disseminated to the American people to the world,” Spielberg, 71, tells PEOPLE in this week’s issue.

The three-time Oscar winner sees the “scary parallels” between the 1970s events and today’s White House, which has repeatedly attacked the press, deemed outlets and stories “fake news” and endorsed “alternative facts.”

For more about Steven Spielberg and The Post pick up this week’s issue of PEOPLE, on newsstands now.

“The relevance of this story is obvious,” he says. “But our movie shows that sometimes hardship is really the rehearsal for the big show, meaning the Pentagon Papers turned into the Watergate investigation. And yet we survived. If we remember that we are all patriots instead of partisan, we will eventually all come out the other side of this.”

RELATED VIDEO: Donald Trump Calls SNL Portrayal A “Hit Job”

The Post’s Katharine Graham (Meryl Streep) and Ben Bradlee (Tom Hanks) serve as early examples of Americans who risked serious government retaliation (the New York Times had received an injunction from the Nixon administration against printing more of the then-classified Pentagon Papers) in order to give the public the information they thought it deserved.

“Both Kay Graham and Ben Bradlee were patriots because they put their country and the truth first at great personal and professional risks,” Spielberg explains. “I really believe that this day in age, truth tellers are heroes. And look in today’s world where some would have us believe there is no difference between beliefs and facts, I think Kay Graham’s action reminds us the facts are the foundation of truth. That’s sort of why I made the movie.”

As the Me Too movement continues to gain support, Graham — the Washington Post‘s first female publisher and the first Fortune 500 CEO — also offers a look at a woman who triumphed against the odds. “There were a bunch of glass ceilings that have been broken ever since our country was founded,” Spielberg says. “But one of the most significant glass ceilings is what Katharine Graham had to smash through.”

And he insists, “Had this movie been made during the Obama administration or had it been made during the Bush administration or the Clinton administration, I think Katharine Graham would’ve still taken on hero status.”

The Post is in theaters now.

Steven Alan RTW Fall 2017

For fall, Steven Alan’s approach started off pragmatic. “We definitely wanted to have an increased penetration of our brand in the store, so the starting point for me was the shirt,” he said at his presentation.
Alan started off by looking at female icons and how they wore their shirts — Patti Smith stood out. “We went into that era and we picked up on a lot of the jewel tones that were prevalent at that time and the texture, like corduroy, paisley prints, pajama plaids and permanent pleating,” he said.
The resulting lineup felt casual yet inspired. As Alan pointed out, the shirts were the prevailing item — ranging from silky pussy bow blouses to a memorable burgundy with black dot pleated peasant top.
Denim was also important, as he offered patched tops and classic jackets as well as non-stretchy relaxed fit bottoms. The denim highlight: a tied robe jacket version. Knits were also noteworthy — rendered in substantial heavy yarns or superfine versions that could almost pass for T-shirts. “A lot of the factories that we were working with to me could be best-in-class in producing what we were going for, that’s very important. A lot of times with collections the

Karl Lagerfeld Taps Illustrator Steven Wilson for Capsule Collection

COLOR WHEEL: Karl Lagerfeld is getting the color printing treatment.
The designer has tapped artist and illustrator Steven Wilson to collaborate on a limited-edition capsule collection of clothing and accessories featuring designs made using layers of cyan, magenta and yellow – the hues that form the basis of the printing process.
Wilson created graphics including a portrait of Lagerfeld, his cat Choupette, the brand logo, a camera and a pair of sunglasses. They feature on items such as an embroidered satin bomber jacket, sweatshirts, jeans, a tote bag and an assortment of accessories that will go on sale in stores and online on April 1.
“The principe behind the graphics is that they are made using just three layers. Abstract cyan, magenta and yellow shapes are laid on top of one another to create a design that has identifiable form,” Wilson said in a statement. “The beauty of this process is that where the colors overlap, you get secondary colors — red, green and so on.”

Photographer Steven Klein Shoots 2017 ‘Commit to Something’ Equinox Campaign

Equinox wants you to commit to more than just walking through its doors in the new year. The high-end fitness club has been known to take an edgy approach to its advertising imagery, and 2017 is no different — its newest campaign, a continuation of last year’s “Commit to Something” series shot by fashion photographer Steven Klein was just released.
At first glance, the seven images have little to do with working out. Imagery includes model Jessica Stam sitting inside a cannabis grow center, a man lounging with a virtual reality headset over his eyes, a pit of concertgoers all fixated on their iPhones and a shirtless man covered in a swarm of bees. Thinking about your next personal training sesh yet?
“It’s certainly no secret that Steven [Klein] is a fearless creative with a strong point of view on social issues, so it was a no-brainer to continue telling the commitment narrative through his powerful lens,” said Elizabeth Nolan, Equinox Executive Creative Director. “This year’s imagery goes even deeper to showcase his greatest strengths as a storyteller, collaborator and cultural steward.”
Klein approached the campaign as a commentary on personal identity and the activities which consume people’s hours. “It is examining the physical body

Oprah And Steven Spielberg Gave John Travolta The Go-Ahead For ‘American Crime Story’

Before John Travolta transformed into Robert Shapiro for “American Crime Story: The People v. O.J. Simpson,” he had to get the go-ahead from his trusted group of Hollywood heavyweights.

In a new interview with GQ, the actor revealed that he contemplated taking the role in the FX series for months. It wasn’t until “four of the top people” gave their blessings that he decided he should go for it.

But who, exactly, were those four people?

“It was Spielberg. It was Oprah. It was Rita Hanks and Tom Hanks. And it was [former Disney CEO] Michael Eisner,” Travolta said. (Note: This obviously amounts to five people, but perhaps the actor sees the Hankses as one entity.)

Talk about a power squad.

The actor added: “They all thought it was completely the right move.” And they were right ― the role garnered Travolta an Emmy nomination and the series became a critical success

Maybe Travolta should consult with those “top people” for every life decision from now on.

Steven Alan Men’s RTW Spring 2016

In a time when normcore is the new normal, Steven Alan is incorporating more conceptual ideas into his basics-driven collection.

The concept for spring came from space, an idea that was evident in the all-white layered look with a banded collar shirt in cotton linen poplin that was reminiscent of astronaut wear, as well as a button-down shirt with a celestial star pattern.

Apart from these out-of-this-world elements, the rest of the collection was solid and centered around a clean assortment of blazers, T-shirts, polos and Alan’s trademark fitted shirts. “It’s like your dad’s shirt, but in smaller proportions,” Alan said.

Another surprise came from the use of Japanese fabrics, a big trend this season, which he used in ultrathin chambray shirts and light-wash jeans.

Based on the number of collaborations Alan engages in every season — Vans and Common Project sneakers for fall, for example — it appears as if others in the fashion industry also believe in his down-to-earth aesthetic.

Test Market

On a work day, I try to wear mostly Steven Alan because it’s good for me to wear what we’ve made; if we need to improve something or if something’s not working great, then I know it. I love to wear a big Steven Alan shirt — I usually get something a bit oversize. So I’ll wear a men’s extra-large reverse seam in white, with a pair of jeans we’ve made. I also have a lot of old Levi’s because I collect a lot of denim. I love a 501, but I like to buy a big men’s size and then cut the legs so they’re kind of wide and cropped. I go to a lot of vintage stores to hunt for them; when I lived in Paris I went every weekend to look at the flea markets. I’m also a big vintage eyewear collector and have really loved designing the Steven Alan Optical collection.

On my feet, I usually have sneakers or oxfords. Or like, a penny loafer. My whole team knows I’m addicted to these Japanese high tops called Shoes Like Pottery. I wear them constantly, year round. I don’t want to be boring, but I always look the same! Even if there’s a corporate event or I have to make a presentation, I always look the same. I try to stay very consistent and have been very consistent for a long time. I’ve always worn a lot of jumpsuits–whatever brand I go to, I make jumpsuits for them. They’re kind of great because they’re so versatile. You can even tie the sleeves at the waist and they make really great pants that way. I have a nice collection of vintage jumpsuits, some from the Yves Saint Laurent Safari collection, and I’ll wear those tied at the waist or zip them up and belt them. And if I’m wearing a jumpsuit like that I might add a little heeled sandal. Maryam Nassir Zadeh makes beautiful shoes. If I do go to a party and I feel like wearing something a little bit different I’ll put on sandals from Maryam. One of my best friends, Mona, designs A Détacher and she makes really beautiful skirts and dresses. I recently bought an indigo skirt/culotte thing from her. It’s the perfect length and so good for summer parties.

Dress for the Seasons

When the weather is this hot and humid, I love to wear linen and cotton poplin. We have these really great cotton poplin wide trousers from Steven Alan called the Picnic Pant. When you wear a wide-leg trouser like that, it’s nice to wear something small on top. You can’t wear something too big, or else you look like a tent. It’s also a great pant to wear with a linen T-shirt.

In the fall, I’m usually in a suit. I’ll wear a suit jacket and a pair of trousers, with a T-shirt and sneakers. I have a few different jacket styles that I really like–one is a schoolboy that’s a bit smaller; The Row makes a really nice one every year. And then I like a boyfriend notched lapel in tropical wool; it’s actually the first jacket I made for Steven Alan when I joined the company and it’s still my go-to. I also always love to have a peak lapel double-breasted blazer. I think the key to pulling off a suit is–well, first of all you just really have to find the right suit for you. But then you also have to have a more casual element in your accessories or what you’re wearing the suit with, like a T-shirt and sneakers.

Quality Control

When I’m shopping for myself, I always look at the finishing of the garment. I’m looking on the inside, not just the outside, examining the fabric, rubbing it on my neck and doing all the crazy things that designers do. You want to make sure there’s a clean finish–basically, that you don’t see all this thread wrapped around the seam–so that it doesn’t look like things are going to snag. It’s good to pay attention to these kinds of things, because they’re going to dictate the longevity of the garment. And really touch the fabric. Customers aren’t stupid, they know when they’re feeling good fabric. This is why we choose to use really good fabric at Steven Alan, because our customers are smart. They know they’re not getting garbage from us. That’s one thing I’m really proud of: There’s no room for poor quality. I’m really proud to say that more than 90 percent of the things I make are made in New York. And if it’s not made here, it’s made at the best factory in Japan.
