Toys ‘R’ Dust! Toys ‘R’ Us to Close or Sell the Remainder of U.S. Stores

Geoffrey the Giraffe is out of a job, along with about 33,000 other Toys “R” Us employees, according to multiple outlets including USA Today and CNN.

After 70 years in business, the iconic toy retailer — once proclaimed as “the world’s greatest toy store” — will shut down or sell off the remainder of its 735 stores in the United States, according to U.S Bankruptcy court documents filed early Thursday and obtained by CNN.

It also comes six months after Toys “R” Us filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, in an effort to shed $ 5 billion it had accumulated in debt and reinvest the $ 400 million it was spending a year to pay that off, into its stores,  CNN reported.

Originally, the troubled toy chain had hoped to keep some locations in the U.S. open — announcing in a letter to customers in January that 182 stores would be closing the following month, according to Business Insider.

“The reinvention of our brands requires that we make tough decisions about our priorities and focus,”Toys “R” Us CEO Dave Brandon wrote in his memo, according to Business Insider. “The actions we are taking are necessary to give us the best chance to emerge from our bankruptcy proceedings as a more viable and competitive company.”

But according to court filing, the company still didn’t have the money to operate that many stores and was spending $ 50 to $ 100 million a month, USA Today reported.

“The stark reality is that the Debtors (Toys “R” Us) are projected to run out of cash in the U.S. in May 2018,” documents say, USA Today reported. “ have determined that the best way to maximize their recoveries is to liquidate the existing inventory in all…735 remaining U.S. stores and begin an orderly wind-down of the U.S. operations.”

They added they only have money to pay their employees for “no fewer than 60 days,” USA Today reported.

Though Toys “R” Us was once one of the go-to places for families to do their toy shopping, the retailer has struggled to compete against online stores like Amazon, as well as big chain companies like Walmart and Target.

As the Chicago Sun-Times previously noted, the store has had difficulties capturing the attention of children who can now find entertainment in a smartphone or tablet.

Toys “R” Us began in Washington, D.C. in 1948 as a small store. The business is now headquartered in Wayne, N.J.

Shoppers can expect liquidation sales over the next few monthsThe New York Times reported.

On Wednesday, the company announced it was also closing all its stores (approx: 100) in the U.K., The Washington Post reported.

Untuckit Expanding Reach With Retail Stores, Other Apparel Categories

NEW YORK — Untuckit is an old-fashioned feel-good American success story.
Two business school buddies with not a stitch of fashion industry experience started a company in 2011 to provide a solution to a problem they saw in the men’s apparel market: button-down shirts that looked and fit properly when worn untucked.
The business launched as strictly an online play with just the one signature product and financed with $ 150,000 raised from friends and family. They came up with a signature sail insignia for the tail of the shirts and it was off to the races.
By last June, Untuckit had attracted the attention of California venture capital firm Kleiner Perkins, which invested $ 30 million to fund the company’s growth.
Since its founding, Chris Riccobono, executive chairman, and his partner Aaron Sanandres, chief executive officer, have expanded into a range of men’s categories including polos, sweaters, sweatshirts, shorts and even sport coats as well as women’s wear and shoes. And Untuckit also operates 18 stores around the country.
Today, the brand will introduce its children’s collection, followed by men’s pants on Nov. 14. And by the first week in December, the company will increase its owned store count to 25, including three more units in

Indochino to Add Four More U.S. Stores

Indochino will add to its retail presence this summer by opening four more “showrooms” in the U.S. over the next two months.
The Vancouver-based omnichannel men’s wear brand will open stores in New York, Chicago, Washington, D.C. and King of Prussia, Pa., between July 7 and Aug. 11. That will bring the number of stores overall to 17. Indochino refers to its storefronts as “showrooms” since unlike traditional retail, the locations carry no inventory. Instead, customers visit the store to be fitted and to personalize their suits and furnishings in a process similar to that employed by Bonobos and Knot Standard.
The first new Indochino store will be located at 25 Broad Street, across from the New York Stock Exchange in lower Manhattan. It’s expected to open on July 7. Next up is a location at The Shops at North Bridge in the River North District of Chicago on July 14. On July 21, a unit will bow at the Tyson’s Galleria in McLean, Va., outside Washington, D.C., and the last one will open on Aug. 11 in the King of Prussia Mall outside Philadelphia.
The showrooms will average 2,300 to 2,500 square feet, although the Chicago unit will be smaller, at 1,600

Superdry Poised to Open Stand-alone Sport Stores Starting in France

SUPERDRY’S SPORT PUSH: SuperGroup has unveiled plans to expand Superdry’s activewear franchise by opening stand-alone sport stores, with the first one set for Grenoble, France. Four Superdry Sport stores are set to open before Christmas.
The news came as the company released its full-year financial results, with revenue climbing 27.4 percent to 752 million pounds in the year to April 29. Underlying profit before tax rose 18.4 percent to 87 million pounds million.
All figures have been converted at current exchange for the 12-month period.
As the ath-leisure trend continues to work its way into consumers wallets’, SuperGroup’s chief executive officer Euan Sutherland said the move was aimed at delivering long-term, sustainable growth and at further securing Superdry’s position as a global lifestyle brand.
He said the brand’s key marketing strategy is to provide customers with “a multichannel approach that balances a disciplined owned and franchised store opening program.”
The brand has been focusing on making its sports range more innovative and technical, and growing its women’s sports category to rival the men’s one. The brand said it also wants to optimize customers’ in-store experience through a more curated and refined selection of sports products.
The company declined to give further details about the openings or

Chanel Apologies to Gabourey Sidibe After She Said She Was Racially Profiled in One of the Brand’s Stores

Gabourey Sidibe isn’t exactly some unknown Hollywood ingénue. After all, this is a woman who was nominated for an Oscar for Best Actress after her deeply moving debut role in the film Precious, and has since gone on to star in hugely successful TV shows like American Horror Story and Empire. But famous or not, in an essay she recently penned for Lenny Letter, the actress recounts a completely unacceptable incident of racial profiling while shopping at Chanel, for which the brand promptly issued an official apology.

In the Lenny essay, Sidibe recounts the story of going to a Chanel store near her house in Chicago to pick up a pair of glasses from the brand she’d been coveting. Once there, the saleswoman informed her they didn’t have any eyeglasses, despite them being clearly on display next to the door, instead directing her to a discount frame dealer across the street.

The actress writes, “I’d love to pretend she was being polite, and I’m sure she would love to pretend she was polite, but she was actually condescending. Explaining to me how exactly I should get across the street and out of her sight line, as if I were in kindergarten. I was trying to purchase glasses, and she was trying to get the interaction with me over as soon as possible. Just to be sure of what was happening, I made her tell me to leave, in her pretend-polite way, three times.”

“I knew what she was doing,” Sidibe continues, “She had decided after a single look at me that I wasn’t there to spend any money. Even though I was carrying a Chanel bag, she decided I wasn’t a Chanel customer and so, not worth her time and energy.”

RELATED: Gabourey Sidibe Opens Up About Weight-Loss Surgery for the First Time: ‘I Love My Body Now’

After her story was published, the French brand was quick to issue an apology, releasing a statement on Wednesday that reads, “Chanel expresses our sincerest regret for the boutique customer service experience that Ms. Sidibe mentioned in this essay. We are sorry that she felt unwelcome and offended. We took her words very seriously and immediately investigated to understand what happened, knowing that this is absolutely not in line with the high standards that Chanel wishes to provide to our customers. We are strongly committed to provide anyone who comes in our boutiques with the best customer service. We do hope that in the future Ms. Sidibe will choose to come back to a Chanel boutique and experience the real Chanel customer experience. ”

Earlier this year the Empire star debuted her memoir, This Is Just My Face: Try Not to Stare, in which she writes about everything from undergoing weight-loss surgery, to her battle with depression, anxiety and bulimia.

“I just didn’t want to worry,” Sidibe, 33, told PEOPLE  in March of her decision to get laparoscopic bariatric surgery after she and her older brother Ahmed, 34, were diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes. “I truly didn’t want to worry about all the effects that go along with diabetes. I genuinely worry all the time about losing my toes.”

She’s also taken on a role as body activist. In April, Sidibe penned an essay for InStyle about learning to ignore Internet haters and embracing her inner confidence.

“Ultimately, I like looking and feeling pretty for myself even more than I like pretending to be a queen with subjects. Negative comments don’t have to haunt me,” she wrote. “When it comes to how I look, my opinion is the only one that counts.”

What do you think of Chanel’s apology? If you were Sidibe would you shop with the brand again? Sound off below!

Harrods Set to Sell Giant Diamond From Store’s Vault

ROCK OF AGES: It may not be as big as the Ritz, but the diamond that Harrods plans to display this month remains one whopper of a rock.
Weighing 228.31 carats, the pear-shaped diamond has, until now, spent much of its life in a safe deposit box at Harrods.
The owner, who has requested anonymity, is putting it up for sale, but not at auction, WWD has learned. The Harrods Diamond, as it’s known, will be sold on a first-come, first-served basis. Price is on application.
The Harrods Diamond will be available to view, by appointment at the store’s Fine Jewellery Room, from mid-December.
The Gemological Institute of America has graded the gem’s color as G, the top of the near-colorless class, while the clarity is VS1, a rare designation for a diamond of such proportions.
Harrods said items from its safe deposit boxes almost never come up for sale. This is also the first time the diamond has been displayed. Stones of that size and class are rarely sold outside auction.
“It is rare that stones of this weight, cut, polish and symmetry are sold outside auction, so this is an exceptional opportunity for Harrods’ customers and a very exciting moment in Harrods’ history,” said Helen

Todd Snyder to Close Japanese Stores

TOKYO – Todd Snyder is pulling out of Japan, the market that was home to his brand’s first flagship stores.
Snyder opened his first Japan location in the hip area of Harajuku in March 2014. Called Todd Snyder Townhouse, the three-story shop carries his men’s line, as well as products from other select brands. After the Tokyo store, locations in Kyoto, Osaka and Yokohama followed.
At the time of the Tokyo opening, Snyder said, “Hopefully this is a sign of things to come.” What he likely didn’t realize at the time was that one of the things to come would be a deal with American Eagle Outfitters to sell his company for $ 11 million.
Since acquiring both the Todd Snyder brand and Tailgate, a collegiate-campus retail concept started by the designer and his father in 1991, American Eagle has been investing in store openings and flashy advertising campaigns in the U.S. The first Stateside Todd Snyder flagship will open on Dec.  6 in the Madison Park area of Manhattan, and a Tailgate store opened at the University of Wisconsin in Madison in May, with others planned for next year. The Madison Park store is expected to have elements that had proved successful in

Oculus Rift Hits Retail Stores This Weekend

Oculus has shared some details of the impending launch at select Best Buy stores this weekend.

48 Best Buy stores in the U.S. will hold “extremely limited” numbers of the virtual reality headset from May 7. Oculus Rifts will also be available online from Microsoft and Amazon starting from May 6 at 9am PST.

Oculus is still catching up on pre-orders, as some people still haven’t received their headsets yet. Oculus says if you’ve pre-ordered, you can pick a headset up at a store while still retaining your pre-order bonuses.

If you’d rather do this than wait, simply go to your Oculus Order Status and say you’ve purchased one at retail. Your pre-order will then be cancelled, and your EVE: Valkyrie founders pack should appear in your order history. You’ll also still get priority status for Oculus Touch pre-orders.

Scotch & Soda to Open Additional Stores in New York and Los Angeles

Scotch & Soda is extending its U.S. retail presence.
The Amsterdam-based casual sportswear brand opened a Beverly Hills location this month and will open a Williamsburg, Brooklyn, unit in November.
The Beverly Hills location will be Scotch & Soda’s second Los Angeles shop — it has a store in Venice Beach. The 1,500-square-foot space at 365 North Beverly Drive carries both the men’s and women’s collections. The store features Scotch & Soda’s interior design signatures — brass fittings, glass cabinets and wooden herringbone flooring — with additions including a wall adorned with hanging plants and a facade made from handmade Moroccan tiles.
The Williamsburg store joins Scotch & Soda’s three New York City boutiques. The retailer opened a Greenwich Village shop in May. The 1,800-square-foot Williamsburg unit will be located at 240-242 Bedford Avenue and also carry both the men’s and women’s assortments. The store, which is housed in a former industrial factory hall, will boast high ceilings along with concrete and steel details.
In 2014, the brand recruited Ari Hoffman, previously of Gant and Benetton, to serve as chief executive officer of its U.S. operations. Hoffman was tasked with further developing the retailer’s U.S. business. Scotch & Soda has more than 150 stores

Wonder alumna Wendi Goldman as its executive vice president of product design and development in late February.

“These decisions are very difficult, knowing they will affect a number of our valued employees, but we are confident they are necessary to help create a winning future for our employees, our customers and our shareholders,” said Gap global president Jeff Kirwan.

For each year reported, estimates are given for the latent demand, or potential industry earnings (P.I.E.), for the country in question (in millions of U.S. dollars), the percent share the country is of the region and of the globe. These comparative benchmarks allow the reader to quickly gauge a country vis-à-vis others. Using econometric models which project fundamental economic dynamics within each country and across countries, latent demand estimates are created. This report does not discuss the specific players in the market serving the latent demand, nor specific details at the product level. The study also does not consider short-term cyclicalities that might affect realized sales. The study, therefore, is strategic in nature, taking an aggregate and long-run view, irrespective of the players or products involved. This study does not report actual sales data (which are simply unavailable, in a comparable or consistent manner in virtually all of the 230 countries of the world). This study gives, however, my estimates for the worldwide latent demand, or the P.I.E, for radio, television, and consumer electronics stores. It also shows how the P.I.E. is divided across the world’s regional and national markets. For each country, I also show my estimates of how the P.I.E. grows over time (positive or negative growth). In order to make these estimates, a multi-stage methodology was employed that is often taught in courses on international strategic planning at graduate schools of business.

Thalhimers Department Stores

Thalhimers Department Stores

Thalhimers was founded in Richmond in 1842 by German Jewish immigrant William Thalhimer as a humble dry goods store. It expanded over the years to become a 26-store chain across the Southeast under the leadership of William’s great-grandson, William B. Thalhimer Jr. It boasted the latest in clothing, shoes, and accessories for the entire family, the most modern of housewares, and gourmet foods and baked goods, including the iconic six-layer chocolate cake. Through decades of dramatic political and social change, Thalhimers stood strong, guided by the overarching philosophies of honesty, integrity, quality, and service. Loyal and devoted employees were the heart of Thalhimers, becoming part of the extended Thalhimer family. Sadly, in 1992, as a result of retail consolidation, the Thalhimer name was dropped and the flagship downtown Richmond store closed. A 150-year legacy ended, leaving behind cherished memories, stories, and images.

Millions In Cocaine Delivered To German Grocery Stores, Plus Bananas

Whoops!

Nearly 400 kilograms of cocaine were hidden in banana shipments sent to Aldi supermarkets in and around Berlin, Germany, earlier this week, according to news site The Local. Police spokesman Stefan Redlich called the error a “logistical mistake,” Agence France-Presse reported.

German police initially valued the haul at close to $ 17 million, but they may have lowballed it. An updated statement said the drugs had a high degree of purity and a street price of nearly $ 44 million.

The shipments are presumed to have traveled a well-known drug smuggling route from Colombia to Europe, Germany’s Deutsche Welle reported. Investigators were reportedly still searching through Aldi’s banana supply for other illicit imports.

Amazingly, this is not the first time that Aldi stores in Germany have received cocaine with their bananas. In January 2014, The Local reported that police had found 140 kilos of the drug in those supermarkets in what was hailed as the second-largest bust in Berlin in 35 years.

Someone’s in trouble.

Apple Watch Debuts in London, Paris Stores

TIME TRAVELERS: Apple Watch made its European retail debut on Friday morning with upscale shop-in-shops at Selfridges in London, where the brand filled the windows with an installation of iridescent butterflies, and Galeries Lafayette in Paris.
The stores were packed with mostly male shoppers testing out the 38 iterations of the multitasking watch that’s part personal trainer and executive assistant, part navigation device and instant chat tool. Oh, and it tells the time, too.
“This is just fabulous: It syncs with the iPhone, which means you have the freedom to leave your phone on your desk and still be able to check on everything,” said Herbert Yip, a Hong Kong native who was visiting London with his family.
Yip said he was leaning toward ordering the sports model. “I was going to buy another device to use as my health kit, but when I knew the Apple was coming out with its own, I waited,” he explained.
The Apple Watch shop at Selfridges is located in the Wonder Room on the ground floor, which is also home to brands such as Bulgari, Chopard, Cartier and Tiffany & Co.
Apple has filled the space — which is permanent and spans about more than 1,000 square feet — with towering ficus

7 Clothing Stores With Home Decor Departments Are Truly The Best Of Both Worlds

The only thing better than picking up an amazing new outfit? Nabbing some fabulous home decor while you’re at it. We don’t mean a cute little jewelry tray you stumbled upon in the accessories section — we’re talking full-blown furniture options, lighting and all the accents you could ever hope for. Basically, everything you’d find at, say, HomeGoods or West Elm, only alongside some more fashion-oriented finds.

And the best part? Many of these home departments are either growing, like the one at Anthropologie, or are on the newer side and ready to expand their aesthetic to home accents, like the ones at Nanette Lepore.

So go ahead, get your one-stop shopping on.

ModCloth

modcloth home decor
If you have a retro taste in decor and long for the perfect quirky throw pillow, this is the place for you. Though they don’t sell furniture, ModCloth an eclectic assortment of everything else you need to make your home a bit more charming.

Urban Outfitters

uo home decor
Any home can be transformed into a Brooklyn loft with the ultra-trendy offerings found here. From furniture to ultra-trendy shelving (and everything in between), you can find something that’s a perfect combo of hipster and chic for every room in the house. And don’t forget about the humorous accessories selection with all of the pop-culture references you can think of.

Anthropologie

anthropologie home decor
Looking for a more sophisticated, European version of Urban Outfitters’ home collection? You’ll find it here. They offer just as much, if not more, in terms of furniture, accents and gorgeous hardware, but with a more romantic, feminine touch.

H&M

hm home decor
Offering possibly the most extensive array of accents and accessories from this list, the H&M home department has something for every taste. Though you won’t find furniture here, you can find pillows for the edgier, more modern home, kitchen accessories and plates for the rustic abode and even personality-filled coasters that work in any space.

Kate Spade

kate spade home decor
The same colorfully preppy aesthetic seen in Kate Spade handbags and jewelry is what you’ll find in their kitchen and office supplies. There’s also an “odds and ends” category filled with fun finds like mustached bottle openers, and dinnerware collections that belong in the registry of your dreams.

Nanette Lepore

nanette lepore home decor
This is the perfect destination if you’re looking for feminine, boho-style bedding and textiles reminiscent of the designer’s equally bohemian fashion collections.

Ralph Lauren

ralph lauren home decor
If you’re looking for something clean, classic and luxurious, you cannot go wrong with Ralph Lauren. While the designer brand will cost you a bit more, the extensive array of furniture and accent pieces is pretty much as timeless as the Polo logo itself. With that in mind, go here if you’re ready to make a long-term investment in say bedding or lighting for your home.

Ikea Advertises Adoptable Dogs In Stores, Because Every Home Needs A Rescue Pup

Furniture might help make a living space comfortable, but nothing makes a house a home like a furry best friend.

With that in mind, some Ikea stores are now featuring cardboard cutouts of adoptable dogs in their showrooms amid the furniture, AFP Relaxnews reported. The cutouts have tags on them with QR codes that shoppers can scan to learn more about the individual dogs.

The idea to display the pets inside the store started in Singapore as a collaboration between Ikea and two animal shelters, according to Business Insider. Together they formed the project Home for Hope.

Now, an Ikea store in Tempe, Arizona, is joining in on the innovative plan to find homes for rescue animals.

“We thought it was a perfect way to show people what their home would look like with a pet in it,” Becky Blaine, Ikea Tempe’s marketing director, told the outlet.

All of the six animals featured in cutouts at the store in Tempe have now been adopted from the Arizona Humane Society, and more cutouts will be exhibited in the store at the end of the month, according to the outlet. At least eight pups have been adopted in Singapore so far, according to the Home for Hope website.
