Missing Fla. 2-Year-Old Is Dead — as Mom Allegedly Confesses to Fabricating Violent Abduction Story

The Florida mother who reported her 2-year-old son missing Sunday morning has been charged with murder after police discovered his battered body in the woods behind a sports complex in Largo.

Police announced the arrest of 21-year-old Charisse Stinson during a press conference late Tuesday night.

In an affidavit obtained Wednesday morning by PEOPLE, Largo detectives allege Stinson confessed to beating her son, Jordan Belliveau.

An AMBER Alert was issued Sunday for Jordan.

Stinson, who is now charged with first-degree murder, told police her child had been kidnapped on Saturday night by a stranger who had offered them a ride home.

She described the suspect to detectives and a police sketch artist. Stinson allegedly told police the man identified himself as “Antwan” and said that he knocked her out with a single punch once they were in his car.

Speaking to police, Stinson allegedly claimed she awoke the next morning alone in a wooded area in Largo Central Park.

But during Tuesday’s press conference, investigators said the man she described to officers and a police sketch artist does not exist.

According to the affidavit, Stinson admitted being frustrated with Jordan on Saturday night when she struck him in the face with the back of her hand. The force of the blow knocked Jordan backwards, and he struck his head against a wall inside Stinson’s home.

The affidavit alleges Jordan experiences seizures throughout Saturday evening.

“As the victim’s health declined during the following day, the defendant carried him to a wooded area during the night where the victim’s body was left,” reads the affidavit. “The victim’s recovered body had visible injuries consistent with the defendant’s admission.”

Jordan’s remains were found behind the Largo Sports Complex, according to the affidavit.

It’s unclear if Jordan was still alive when Stinson left him in the woods.

FOX 13 spoke with Stephon Davis, Jordan’s paternal uncle, who said he and his family believed Stinson was behind whatever happened to the boy.

We honestly knew it was her because of her past with us,” Davis told FOX 13.

Bonobos and the Modern Male: A New Brand Story

For some time, the story around Bonobos has been its fits, diversity of styling and the $ 310 million deal to Walmart.
But how to build a brand that lasts? The message might need to be more than product and the company’s doubling down on its marketing with a new campaign called Project172, which kicked off Monday with the launch of two TV spots.
The campaign — with the TV commercials paired with a national e-mail, social media and radio campaign — enlisted 172 men (the total number of sizes and fit combinations in Bonobos pants), all wearing the same pair of stretch washed chinos in the same color, to share their thoughts on gender stereotypes and the changing definition of masculinity. The company is set to release on May 21 a mini-documentary with footage from conversations with those 172 individuals talking about their definition of masculinity.
“We have been working in the last couple of years in terms of trying to position Bonobos from a brand perspective as a brand that stands for not just great fitting clothing but really helping men find their fit in the world, recognizing that the world is changing dramatically and particularly for men changing,” said Bonobos copresident

New Garments Going on Display at ‘Diana: Her Fashion Story’ Exhibition

FASHION HISTORY: Historic Royal Palaces, the charity that manages Kensington Palace, has been working toward adding new, never-before-seen garments for the reopening of the popular “Diana:Her Fashion Story” exhibition, later this month.
The exhibition charts the sartorial history of Princess Diana and highlights important moments in her life through her clothing.
Some of the outfits going on display include the Armani chinos and white shirt she wore to visit the landmine fields in Angola with the International Red Cross in 1997 and a violet body-hugging gown created by Gianni Versace, a dear friend of Diana’s, for a fund-raising dinner at the Museum of Natural History in Chicago.
The pink David Sassoon dress Princess Diana wore en route to her honeymoon with Prince Charles will also be exhibited, alongside pieces by Catherine Walker, Caroline Charles and Victor Edelstein, a leading London couturier in the Eighties.
Princess Diana was also known for championing local designer names during State visits, as illustrated by a cobalt blue pleated gown by the London-based Japanese-born designer, Yuki, worn to a State Dinner with Emperor Hirohito in Tokyo.
The exhibition will reopen on April 26 at Kensington Palace and it’s predicted to attract large crowds as interest on the British Royals is peaking, with

Vetements’ Guram Gvasalia, Buyers Say Highsnobiety Story is Fake News

According to buyers and Guram Gvasalia, Vetements’ chief executive officer, the idea that the brand’s popularity is waning is, well, fake news.
On Thursday, Highsnobiety published a piece with multiple unnamed sources claiming that the brand, which is designed by Demna Gvasalia, who is also the creative director at Balenciaga, is losing favor with consumers and retailers. The variety of unnamed sources, who were identified with nebulous descriptions such as “one buyer” or a “former shop manager,” contributed the lack of sales to Vetements moving its headquarters to Zurich, lack of newness and inflated pricing.
In a statement sent to WWD, Guram Gvasalia said the independent company is actually outperforming market expectations and showing over 50 percent growth in comparison to the previous year.
“It is sad to see the state of journalism today. In the era of click-baits, using the name of our company in the article is a click-bait itself, and even more so when it’s mentioned in a negative headline,” he wrote. “To the disappointment of all the haters, we would like to declare that Vetements is in the strongest creative and financial state it has ever been. Former NBA Player Jason Collins on How His Jersey Was Part of His Powerful Coming Out Story

For Jason Collins—the retired NBA player who played for the Boston Celtics, Brooklyn Nets, Atlanta Hawks and Washington Wizards—wearing the number 98 on his jersey for most of his 13-season career had special significance. Collins, who came out as gay in 2013 in a cover story for Sports Illustrated, says the number paid respects to Matthew Shepard, a gay man who was tortured and killed because of his sexuality in 1998.

“I remember being a sophomore in college when Matthew Shepherd was killed,” Collins, 39, says. “Every time I put on that jersey, it was just a silent acknowledgment to myself and to my friends and family — who knew why I was wearing that number — of being a proud gay black man playing in the NBA. Sort of hiding in plain sight.”

Collins adds that 1998 also coincides with the founding of The Trevor Project—an organization that provides crisis and suicide prevention to the LGBTQ community—which Collins has become involved in.

In Coming Out Stories, a new video series from PEOPLE and Entertainment Weekly, 16 LGBTQ people from all walks of life share how they opened up to friends, family and the world — and how their lives changed.

One inspiration for the series: the new movie Love, Simon (in theaters March 16), a moving comedy-drama about a gay teen (Nick Robinson) struggling with how to come out to his friends and parents (played by Jennifer Garner and Josh Duhamel). Love, Simon director Greg Berlanti (the producer behind TV’s Riverdale and Supergirl) tells his own coming out story in the series, as does costar Keiynan Lonsdale.

Others sharing their stories include Modern Family actor Jesse Tyler FergusonGrey’s Anatomy actress Sara Ramirez, retired NBA player Jason Collins, social media star Tyler Oakley and Brooke Guinan, a New York City firefighter who is transgender.

PEOPLE and EW partnered with GLSEN, a nonprofit that fights to make schools safe for all kids, to create Coming Out Stories. See all the hilarious and heartbreaking tales at people.com/comingoutstories or on PeopleTV (download the app on your favorite mobile or connected TV device).

The Surprising Story Behind Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip’s Recreated Honeymoon Photo

Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip are celebrating their 70th milestone wedding anniversary with the release of stunning new portraits, but it was on their 60th anniversary that they shared an even more touching photo.

The longtime royal couple recreated a photo they took on their honeymoon in November 1947 down to the very last detail. But what made the 2007 photo all the more sweet was the fact that it was entirely their idea!

When photographer Tim Graham met the royal couple underneath a large tree within the grounds of Broadlands in Hampshire, he found them studying the original photograph and positioning themselves in the same stances, according to British author Robert Lacey, who is the historical consultant on The Crown.

Sixty years after the original photo was taken, the Queen hooks her right hand through her husband’s arm as he gazes lovingly at his bride. And the monarch has the same sweet smile on her face all those decades later.

And the Queen definitely did her homework! In addition to the couple wearing almost identical outfits, the monarch is also sporting a strikingly similar brooch and necklace in both photos.

The newlyweds spent the first part of their honeymoon at Broadlands House in Hampshire, which was owned by Philip’s uncle, Lord Mountbatten. They then traveled to Birkhall Lodge, which is on Balmoral estate in Scotland.

As they gather to mark the 70th wedding anniversary of Queen Elizabeth, 91, and Prince Philip, 96, at Windsor Castle on Nov. 20 with a private dinner, the royal family will toast the latest amazing milestone in a lifetime of records.

Jason Momoa Details His Incredible Love Story with ‘Queen’ Lisa Bonet

Everyone remembers pining over their first celebrity crush — but when you’re Jason Momoa, you actually marry yours.

During an appearance on The Late Late Show with James Corden on Thursday, the Justice League star opened up about his relationship with his longtime love, Lisa Bonet.

Last month, Momoa, 38, and Bonet, 49, wed in an intimate celebration. Although it was assumed that the couple, who share daughter Lola, 10, and son Nakoa-Wolf, 8, married in 2007, they officially tied the knot just weeks ago, a source confirmed to PEOPLE.

“Finally, man,” Momoa said with a laugh, showing off his ring and wedding present — a necklace that took four years to carve — to host James Corden.

“Ever since I was like, 8 years old and I saw her on the TV, I was like, ‘Mommy, I want that one,’ ” he said. “I’m like, ‘I’m going to stalk you for the rest of my life and I’m going to get you.’ ”

“I’m a full-fledged stalker,” he joked. “I didn’t tell her that until we had two babies, otherwise, I’d be creepy and weird. But yeah, just always wanted to meet her. She was a queen, always.”

Momoa and Bonet met in 2005 at a jazz club in New York City through mutual friends.

“We just happened to be in the right place at the right time,” he said. “I actually had dreaded my hair for her. I had dreadlocks, she had dreadlocks. I literally turned around and I see her and she goes, ‘I’m Lisa.’ I turned around to my friend and I . I had f—ing fireworks going off inside, man. I convinced her to take me home, because I was living in a hotel.”

The two shared a meal at Cafe 101 that night.

“We sat down, she ordered a Guinness, and that was it,” he said. “I beyond love Guinness. We had Guinness and grits, and the rest is history.”

Momoa is also stepdad to Bonet’s daughter, Zoë Kravitz, whom the insider told PEOPLE attended the recent nuptials.

On Thursday, Kravitz, 28, shared an adorable photo of her and Momoa.

“Love you papabear,” she captioned the shot.

When Billie Beat Bobby: The True Story Behind Battle of the Sexes

Forty-four years ago this month, Billie Jean King, one of the top female tennis players of all time, beat Bobby Riggs, a retired former #1 player in the men’s circuit, in front of an estimated worldwide audience of 90 million people.

Besides sending the cocksure and (admittedly) chauvinistic Riggs into a depression, the match, which some dismissed as a publicity stunt, would go on to be remembered as a symbolic achievement for women in a decade of tremendous social progress.

Now, the story behind the game, and the changes it helped inspire, is on the big screen in Battle of the Sexes, with Steve Carell as Riggs and Emma Stone as King.

Here’s the true story behind the historic showdown:

Meet Bobby Riggs

When we first meet Riggs in Battle of the Sexes, he’s a 55-year-old has-been with a gambling problem and a desperate need for attention. But back in the 1940s, he was one of the best tennis players in the world, with six major titles under his belt. He had won Wimbledon and the U.S. Championships as an amateur and was ranked the #1 player internationally for three years.

After he retired in 1951, Riggs used his considerable prowess as a promoter and entertainer to keep the spotlight on tennis — and himself. Ultimately unsatisfied with his life outside the court, he found he could gain attention in the press by disparaging the quality of women’s tennis and claiming that he could beat any of its top players.

While Riggs’ pronouncements failed to gain much traction among female tennis pros — including King, who turned him down repeatedly — he finally found a taker in Australian champ Margaret Court, who, at the age of 30, was the top women’s player in the world.

They played each other in front of 5,000 fans in Ramona, California on May 13, Mother’s Day. Using a series of drop shots and lobs to fluster Court, Riggs won the match easily. Dubbed the Mother’s Day Massacre, the event earned Riggs the cover of both Sports Illustrated and Time.

“Now I want King bad,” he proclaimed after the game. “I’ll play her on clay, grass, wood, cement, marble or roller skates … We got to keep this sex thing going. I’m a woman specialist now.”

Billie Jean King

At 29, King was at the top of her game when she finally accepted Riggs’ challenge in July 1973, agreeing to participate in a $ 100,000, winner-take-all televised showdown dubbed by promoters as the “Battle of the Sexes.”

At this point in her career, King, who would go on to win a total of 29 Grand Slam titles before she retired, was already an outspoken advocate for women’s tennis and women’s rights in general.

RELATED: Billie Jean King, Emma Stone Discuss ‘Battle of the Sexes’

For instance, when the Pacific Southwest Tennis Tournament offered women just 15% of the prize money that it awarded the men — despite the fact that both finals earned equal ticket sales —  King led a walk-out. She and several other women went on to create the Virginia Slims tour and later the Women’s Tennis Association.

Although she was in her prime, like Riggs, King was also immersed in her own personal problems at the time of the match. During the lead up to the game, she was in the midst of an affair with her hairdresser-turned-secretary Marilyn Barnett. King was still married to her husband, Larry King, at the time. The couple divorced in 1987, and King has since become a prominent LGBTQ advocate.

The Battle of the Sexes

Despite her seriousness about promoting women’s tennis, King did playfully engage in the outrageous trash talking — led by Riggs — that drove press for the match throughout the summer.

The duo held a series of press conferences together, where banter included barbs from Riggs like, “I’ll tell you why I’ll win. She’s a woman and they don’t have the emotional stability.”

Finally, on September 20, 1973, 30,000 fans filled the new Houston Astrodome to enjoy the spectacle. King made her grand entrance on a Roman-style litter carried by four buff, shirtless members of the Rice University track team. Riggs, meanwhile, opted for a rickshaw driven by a group of buxom models dubbed “Bobby’s bosom buddies.”

They even exchanged gifts: King received a novelty-sized Sugar Daddy lollipop (Riggs’ personal sponsor for the match), while Riggs was given a baby pig, a symbol of his self-proclaimed chauvinism.

While the final score card suggests an easy victory for King, she later admitted to getting rattled early on, telling CNN that after Riggs broke her serve in the first set, she realized she “had to win” given the implications of the match.

Having learned from Court’s mistakes, King refused to be fooled by Riggs’ tricky drop shots and lobs. She ended up winning the contest in straight sets: 6–4, 6–3, 6–3.

The Aftermath

The match represented an enormously satisfying win for women in tennis, but critics were quick to downplay its significance.

Many argued that the age difference (26 years) between King and Riggs played too large a factor in the outcome, while others theorized that Riggs lost the match on purpose to settle gambling debts.

Years later ESPN would even report that the entire game was rigged by the mob, but those close to Bobby have said the rumors are “ridiculous” — citing Riggs’ fragile ego as proof enough alone that he’d never bet against himself.

Another clue lies in their personal post-match conversation, in which King later revealed Riggs told her, “I really underestimated you.” He also reportedly later said after the match, “This is the worst thing in the world I’ve ever done.”

On a positive note, after the “Battle of the Sexes,” King and Riggs remained close friends until his death in 1995. King said she spoke to Riggs the day before he died, and they said “I love you” to each other.

Battle of the Sexes is in select theaters now — it opens wide Sept. 29.

The Funny Story Behind How The Beatles’ ‘Sgt. Pepper’ Album Got Its Name

Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” could have been a totally different album altogether, were it not for a simple misunderstanding.

Beatles legend Sir Paul McCartney has revealed how the title and concept of the British band’s eighth album actually came to him during an airplane flight with roadie Mal Evans.

McCartney said in an interview posted to his website on May 25 that the idea behind the record, which celebrated its 50th anniversary Thursday, all emanated from him mishearing Evans asking him to “pass the salt and pepper.”

“I thought he said Sergeant Pepper,” said McCartney. “I went, ‘Oh! Wait a minute, that’s a great idea!’”

After having “a laugh about it,” the 74-year-old musician said he immediately “started thinking about Sergeant Pepper as a character.”

“I thought it would be a very interesting idea for us to assume alter egos for this album we were about to make,” he added.

The rest, as they say, is music history.

Jennifer Garner Denounces People Magazine Cover Story About Divorce

Jennifer Garner can let those pesky pregnancy rumors go, but when it comes to misleading news stories about her divorce, she’s not here for it.

The typically private actress took to her Facebook page Wednesday afternoon to “set the record straight” on a cover story People magazine ran in its new issue. The article, titled “Life After Heartbreak,” seemingly presents itself as an interview with Garner, but instead references insiders and sources who claim her split with Ben Affleck has “been the most difficult decision for her.”

Another insists Garner will “eventually” start dating again. “She’s certainly not jumping up and down and screaming, ‘I’m single!’ and planning dates,” the source says. “She still says Ben was the love of her life.”

Garner was quick to respond to the story, writing in a statement, “I did not pose for this cover. I did not participate in or authorize this article.”

The 45-year-old adds that although this “isn’t a tragedy by any measure” it does affect herself and her young children with Affleck ― Violet, Seraphina and Samuel.

“While we are here, for what it’s worth: I have three wonderful kids and my family is complete,” she joked of those frequent pregnancy reports.

Garner and Affleck initially separated in June 2015 after 10 years of marriage. Although there were rumors of reconciliation over the last year, the pair officially filed for divorce in April

Terrifying Tornado Gives Couple A Proposal Story They’ll Never Forget

A storm chaser in Texas used a terrifying tornado as the perfect backdrop to a proposal.

Alex Bartholomew popped the question to girlfriend Britney Fox Cayton near McLean on Tuesday, as a twister struck the ground about a mile away. Fortunately, she said yes.

Bartholomew shared photographs on Facebook of the couple’s epic engagement, with the tornado visible in the background. They are now going viral:

”I was completely overjoyed when he asked me and could not help having tears in my eyes,” Cayton told HuffPost on Thursday. “I almost forgot about the tornado behind us because all I could see was him and how happy I felt in that moment.”

The two 25-year-olds have been together for just over 18 months. “He’s a storm chaser but I’ve been fascinated by it since we started dating,” Cayton said. “He’s been taking me out with him every chance we’ve had since.”

Bartholomew wrote on Facebook that he was “elated,” “ecstatic” and “overjoyed” at Cayton’s answer. “I seriously couldn’t ask for a better life and I can’t wait to spend it with her by my side,” he added.

Of Course Aidy Bryant Has An ‘SNL’-Worthy Engagement Story

There’s no question that Aidy Bryant is one of the funniest players on the current “Saturday Night Live” roster, blessing the world with characters like Adele and that drunk girl dressed as mouse who thinks Halloween is going to be super fun this year.

So it only makes sense that Bryant’s sense of humor would bleed into her personal life, considering she’s been dating “SNL” writer Conner O’Malley for nearly a decade. The two recently got engaged, so when Bryant stopped by “Late Night with Seth Meyers” on Thursday, she made sure to tell us all exactly how it went down.

One night after work on the late-night sketch show with Lin Manuel Miranda, she returned home to find a strange sight: her dog wearing a bowtie.

BB & ME

A post shared by aidybryant (@aidybryant) on

“I was like, ‘My dog doesn’t wear a bow tie! Where is he going tonight?’” she joked. “Basically, the second I shut the door, a man — who I discovered was Conner — frantically came around the corner and was just like, ‘Will you marry me?!’”

“No box, no ‘I love you,’” she added. “Just a man in full terror standing very far from a dog in a bowtie, just holding a loose ring.”

The comedian was understandably taken aback and and thought the proposal was some elaborate joke, until she realized he was serious. Bryant, of course, said yes and the two have been happily engaged ever since.

We guess this means the “international nasty girl” is officially out of commission.

‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ Is Unequivocally A Story By, For And About Women

With the much-awaited release of Hulu’s “The Handmaid’s Tale” only four days away, much has been said in the past 24 hours about who the story, in both its book and TV show form, is for.

In Saturday’s New York Times review, executive producer Bruce Miller discusses spearheading the show as a man when its creators initially wanted a woman to do so:

“Offred spoke to me,” Mr. Miller said. “She’s in this nightmarish situation but she keeps her funny cynicism and sarcasm. She finds really interesting ways to pull levers of power and express herself.”

But Mr. Miller wasn’t a shoo-in for showrunner because producers were looking for a woman, he recalled. “The Handmaid’s Tale” has been a seminal right-of-passage novel for many young women for over three decades; a feminist sacred text.

“It’s sacred to me, too,” Mr. Miller said. “But I don’t feel like it’s a male or female story; it’s a survival story.”

At the show’s premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival on Friday, the starring actors placed a heavy emphasis on the show being a “human” story and not a “feminist” one

“I think that any story, if it is a story being told by a strong, powerful woman… any story that’s just a powerful woman owning herself in any way is automatically deemed ‘feminist,’” said Madeline Brewer, who plays handmaid Jane. “But it’s just a story about a woman. I don’t think that this is any sort of feminist propaganda.”

Elisabeth Moss, who plays the show’s main character Offred, echoed Brewer’s comments

“It’s not a feminist story, it’s a human story, because women’s rights are human rights,” Moss said. I never intended to play Peggy [from ‘Mad Men’] as a feminist and I never expected to play Offred as a feminist … I approach it from a very human place, I hope.”

Atwood has since responded by neither agreeing nor disagreeing with the cast.

“It’s not only a feminist story,” she said. “It’s also a human story.”

While the show doesn’t need to be labeled as “feminist,” and while it’s fine that a man who loves the story spearheaded its televised iteration, a story that a woman wrote about the forced subservience of women and their subsequent survival deserves to be owned by women. We get to claim it.

The Handmaid’s Tale is a dystopian fiction, sure, but it’s one that has women storming to their local libraries to grab a copies of the book. Last month, women dressed up as handmaids and protested anti-abortion legislation in the Texas Senate gallery. And, at this year’s SXSW festival, women wore handmaids costumes and roamed the streets of Austin, Texas, as performance art. Even though the book was written more than 30 years ago, it is resonating with women all over again.

Rebecca Traister wrote about reading the book in the era of President Donald Trump for New York Magazine in Februrary. “[T]here’s no question that reading about Atwood’s imagined dystopia is far scarier today than it was, I suspect, for adults living in 1985,” she wrote.

For anyone who has read the book, there shouldn’t be much surprise as to why women feel so connected to it in this current political and social moment. After all, it feels closer to reality than the show’s creators wanted.

Moss, who also serves as a producer, acknowledged the eerie and terrifying parallels between Offred’s nightmarish journey and Trump’s America.

“We never wanted the show to be this relevant,” she told Entertainment Weekly in December.

The relevance of story is easy to spot.

In the dystopian theocracy of Gilead, where “The Handmaid’s Tale” is set, women’s bodies are policed and controlled by the male-run state. Handmaids’ only purpose is to bear children ― they have no rights, no freedom, no lives. Women are not trusted with their own bodies.

America now has a president who brags about grabbing women “by the pussy.” This week, a lawyer in Tennessee said that women are “especially good at lying … because they’re the weaker sex.” A Missouri congressman said last year that becoming pregnant after a rape is a blessing from God. Rooms full of men make legislative decisions about women’s bodies. A panel of men in Maryland decided that rapists can continue to have parental rights over the children who were conceived by rape. And abortion access is under threat across the U.S.

But the beauty of “The Handmaid’s Tale” ― something that Miller misses and perhaps what women connect to most deeply ― is that it is inarguably, explicitly, a story of women’s survival and audacity.

The first time I read the novel, in the fall of 2015, I cried. Not because its content was so traumatizing. (It was.) And not because it felt so eerily similar to what was happening in our political landscape. (It did.)

I cried for lines like this:

“We learned to whisper almost without sound. In the semidarkness we would stretch out our arms, when the Aunts weren’t looking, and touch each other’s hands across space. We learned to lip-read, our heads flat on the beds, turned sideways, watching each other’s mouths.”

And lines like this:

“I keep on going with this sad and hungry and sordid, this limping and mutilated story, because after all I want you to hear it … By telling you anything at all I’m at least believing in you … Because I’m telling you this story I will your existence. I tell, therefore you are.”

Atwood’s beautifully constructed prose is at its finest when she is portraying the sheer resilience of my fellow women.

In the wake of the presidential election, the resilience of women is what has kept me going. Women are resisting, calling, volunteering, donating… and living.

And like the fictional Offred ― whether Moss thinks she’s “feminist” or not ― we intend to survive.

Before they were never stop never stopping, or telling Lego World that everything is awesome, or even offering up “Congratulations on the Sex!” cakes, the comedic minds behind The Lonely Island — Akiva Schaffer, Jorma Taccone and Andy Samberg — were brainstorming ideas for a digital short late into an April 2007 week during “Saturday Night Live” Season 32.

“We were hard up for an idea because we had gotten through that we’d be making a digital short every week at that point,” Samberg said to The Huffington Post, referring to the pre-shot segments cooked up by the trio that regularly ran on the NBC variety show from 2005 to 2012. “One of us was like, ‘What about that “O.C.” thing? Maybe we could do that.’”

The “’O.C.’ thing” was an idea they’d hatched years before, after watching a 2005 episode of the seminal Fox teen show where Marissa (Mischa Barton) shoots Trey (Logan Marshall-Green) over a soundtrack of “Hide and Seek” by Imogen Heap (more commonly known hereafter in the pop culture lexicon as “Mmm Whatcha Say”).

“We were all kind of obsessed with it together,” explained Schaffer. “One day, Andy and Jorm took out our home video camera and, just around our apartment, kind of shot what I would consider the first 45 seconds, maybe minute’s worth of a short with no ending in mind … but it was not for any intended audience or for anything, really. It was just for fun.”

The just-for-fun idea in their library combined with a looming deadline eventually morphed into the digital short we all now know as “The Shooting,” or “Dear Sister,” on April 14, 2007. (It helped that “The O.C.” itself had just finished its run two months before the short aired, so an homage felt appropriate.)

Translating the idea from its beginnings into something with an arc of sorts was a challenge.

“It took a while for us to figure it out, just ‘cause there was no logical end. We had to really invent something,” Taccone said.

“And then it became completely logical,” Shaffer added.

We took a walk down comedy-memory lane with Schaffer, Taccone and Samberg for the short’s 10-year anniversary.

Did you guys have to run the short by Lorne Michaels or anyone before it made it on the show? What was the reaction when you first showed it?

Samberg: The first time Lorne would see any of our shorts was at dress rehearsal at 8 p.m. so I don’t think this was any different.

Schaffer: Yeah, and it played really well, and we were all kind of pleasantly surprised by that. I don’t think we thought it was gonna not do well, but we kind of didn’t know how much people would be on board for it, because it’s kind of a weird art film.

That’s what we kept laughing about, that we’d made kind of a weird art film that didn’t really have anything you could exactly explain why it was entertaining or if it was entertaining. The music layers on itself at the end, and that’s what was making us giggle in the edit room, it was like, “Ooh, we’re making kind of an art film here!” I remember saying that a lot.

And then playing it at the thing, you never know how the audience is going to react. I didn’t think that they would hate it or anything, but I thought it would be maybe quieter than it was. But it felt like they liked it right away.

Samberg: What we learned was that the sort of cinema and TV trope of the gunshot off-camera and somebody, in slo-mo, seeing blood on their own hands and realizing it’s them was more popular than we realized.

Jorma Taccone: I think that we also realized that we had our finger on the pulse.

Samberg (exasperated): No, Jorm, don’t —

Schaffer: Jorm should work in advertising for a little while. You have to forgive him. He’s a big advertising guy now.

When you guys brought Shia LaBeouf on, did he have any ideas of his own to add or was he just game for it?

Schaffer: He was just game. We always had a great time with Shia when he would come host. He was one of our favorites. I don’t even know how much we explained it to any of the actors, honestly. I think Bill [Hader] knew what it was ‘cause his office was next to ours and we would always, in the writing process, share with Bill, Bill would be there. And everybody else, we would just tell wardrobe what to dress them in and tell them where to meet us, and they would just kind of show up. I don’t know that we even pitched to them ahead of time.

Taccone: That was also a late-night one too, that people were showing up pretty late. Like, what time was it?

Schaffer: That was definitely a Friday night shoot, which is the worst, ‘cause then you’re editing it straight up till airtime. The reason that it looks the way it does is because there had been no plan to do it. I mean, based on basically what we already told you, which is that we were so stuck for an idea that we thought worthy of doing a short that we had to go back into our library and find something two years earlier. So that tells you how much we had been kinda stuck that week.

So it was definitely a last-minute short, and the reason it looks like it does is ‘cause that’s just a hotel suite. When it gets to be Friday night and you haven’t figured it out, then the only thing you can do is rent a hotel suite, grab some lights, and film in there. And so that’s what it is, just a hotel room and some lights.

I remember [Jason] Sudeikis being asleep on one of the beds of the actual hotel suite because we had asked him and Fred [Armisen] to come, you know, in their police outfits — they didn’t even know what it was for — and now it was like, three in the morning and we hadn’t gotten to their part yet.

Samberg: Yeah, and we kind of made up the ending on set, right?

Schaffer: Yeah, We knew it would be police officers showing up and then they would shoot each other, but I don’t think we knew that we would have them do it over and over again. Or maybe they weren’t gonna shoot each other, and we came up with them shooting each other on set?

Taccone: I can’t remember which part we came up with on set.

Samberg: It might have been just show up and read the letter and that was the blow on the whole thing, “Oh, she’s gonna [read] the letter about how they were all gonna shoot each other. How ‘bout that.” And then I think on set we had it that the cops shooting each other was also in the letter.

Schaffer: The fact that the music was overlapping was in edit. It was gonna be that it kept resetting.

Taccone: That was accidental. ‘Cause we let it go long, and then you were like, “Oh shit.”

Schaffer: Yeah, exactly, and it was like, “Oh, that’s cool.” And I do wanna give credit to Sudeikis because I feel like he was the first one to say, “Oh, we should shoot each other.”

The feeling I had first watching “Dear Sister” felt similar to watching the “David S. Pumpkins” sketch in this season of “SNL.” I was wondering what you thought about slightly confusing absurdity becoming sort of viral and iconic.

Schaffer: That’s high praise. We’re big into David S. Pumpkins.

Samberg: Basically anything like that where it basically makes no sense but there’s somehow a set of rules, they’re just not the rules of reality as we know it, we generally enjoy.

Schaffer: Yeah. It’s not pure random, because then pure random’s never funny, it doesn’t really have any meaning. But somehow, David S. Pumpkins taps into something everybody understands. It just becomes a delight.

Taccone: Those are also two great songs, you know: Imogen Heap, for obvious reasons, and David S. Pumpkins has an equally great song.

After the short took off with fans and got a life of its own, did that affect the way you approached shorts in the future at all?

All three: No, not really.

Samberg: It’s always a surprise which ones got, like, tribute videos and stuff. I never would’ve guessed that, for example, “Threw It on the Ground” would’ve been one, but that turned into one that people really liked. Like, kids liked it a lot.

Taccone: That’s kind of the advantage of “SNL” too, is that every week, no matter what you do, there’s gonna be a show next week, and you have to kind of reset and start from scratch. You don’t really have time to even — I mean, we were always sort of conscious of not trying to repeat ourselves, but there was no trying to follow something that was popular, because you couldn’t … there was no time to try to come up with, “Oh, is this gonna go viral?”

Samberg: Nothing ever went viral where, before someone made it, they said, “We want this to go viral.”

Taccone: This was early enough in the process that they didn’t clear music for internet use always and they weren’t putting things on YouTube, so it was especially impressive that it went viral considering it wasn’t put online. It was only put online by kids who were putting it online themselves. They only cleared Imogen Heap’s song for air, and so it didn’t even go online, so that’s how … I don’t know.

Samberg: That’s how much we have our finger on the pulse.

Nothing ever went viral where, before someone made it, they said, “We want this to go viral.”
Andy Samberg

Are there any sort of fun little moments that you guys remember from filming the sketch that most people wouldn’t notice when they watch it?

Schaffer: We were very impressed with Shia’s dead acting. When he hit the ground, he really let his head hit the ground. We were also impressed with how well he was able to hold his eyes still in a way that seemed, you know, whatever he was doing — thousand-yard stare — was really working for us.

The gun in it is also the gun, if you watched any of our pre-”SNL” short things we were making for our website — that gun was, I forget where we got it, but it’s like, shooting little plastic balls. We used it for everything that required a gun. That’s how homemade the digital shorts were at this point. We didn’t even ask the props department for a gun, we were just like, “Oh, yeah, we have that gun at home.” Everyone’s wearing their own clothes except for the costumes of the police, right? You guys, I think, are just in your own sweatshirts and stuff.

Taccone: To add to that gun story, what we did oftentimes with that gun — that was a little pellet gun — and we would ball up little wads of paper, when we all lived in Los Angeles together, and we would stuff them in the barrel and shoot each other with the gun and try to give each other little welts.

Samberg: Oh, yeah.

Schaffer: It was like an endurance challenge.

Was there anything else you wanted to add about the short?

Schaffer: We just love that people are taking interest in it. We loved it a ton and didn’t think it would become this popular, so it’s very fun to talk about.

Samberg: I guess the last thing I would like to say is: Shoutout to Josh Schwartz for creating “The O.C.,” and shoutout to Imogen Heap for making an incredible, timeless, classic tune.

Schaffer: I wanted to say to the kids to follow your dreams. When you watch this short, it requires nothing. Anybody could make it in their living room of their own apartment or house.

Taccone: Yeah, they could definitely get Shia LaBeouf to stop by.

Schaffer: We don’t have good lights, we don’t have anything. Except for cop uniforms, I guess. That would be — but anyone can go buy those at the Halloween store. My point is that there’s nothing fancy or unattainable about it, it looks like crap, it’s just an idea.

Taccone: I want to remind the kids to get out there and vote.
