Taylor Swift Returns To Streaming Services As Katy Perry Drops Album

Check and mate.

As the clock neared midnight on Thursday, pop music fans around the world readied themselves for Katy Perry’s fifth studio album, “Witness.” Little did they know that the singer’s rival, Taylor Swift, would swoop in at the last moment to steal Perry’s thunder by releasing her entire back catalogue on streaming services that same night.

Swift’s music is now available on Spotify, Apple Music and Tidal, reversing her decision to rebuke major streaming services for not properly compensating artists.

“In celebration of ‘1989’ selling over 10 million albums worldwide and the RIAA’s 100 million song certification announcement, Taylor wants to thank her fans by making her entire back catalog available to all streaming services tonight at midnight,” a statement from the official TaylorNation Instagram read.

A post shared by Taylor Nation (@taylornation) on

Swift pulled her entire catalogue from Spotify and Apple Music in 2014, describing the push toward streaming music online as a “grand experiment” contributing to the perception that music should be free.

“I’m not willing to contribute my life’s work to an experiment that I don’t feel fairly compensates the writers, producers, artists and creators of this music,” she told Yahoo about her decision at the time.

The singer later came to an agreement with Apple Music after releasing an open letter encouraging the service to pay artists during its free three-month trial period. An Apple executive quickly responded to Swift’s plea, and her music ― including her new album at the time, “1989” ― was made available for streaming.

Of course, the internet reacted accordingly to the suspicious timing of the singer’s return, reigniting the now years-long feud between Swift and Perry and their fandoms. Snake emojis, and fun, were had by all.

Dish Network Introduces ‘Sling TV’ Video Streaming Service

By Jennifer Saba and Lisa Richwine

Jan 5 (Reuters) – Dish Network Corp on Monday took the wraps off its long-anticipated video streaming service, named Sling TV, targeted to younger consumers who shun pricey cable and satellite subscriptions.

The $ 20 a month service, the first from a distributor, will be available through Internet-connected devices such as Amazon Fire TV, Roku and Google Nexus Player for TVs, tablets, computers and smartphones. It will include television programming and sports events from Walt Disney’s ABC, ESPN and Maker Studios, Time Warner’s TNT, CNN, TBS, Cartoon Network and Adult Swim, and Food Network, HGTV and Travel Channel.

Dish said it will announce a launch date and additional media partners soon.

The satellite TV provider noted that Sling TV is not the same as Sling Media, the Foster City, California, company known for Sling Box devices that let people watch TV across multiple screens.

Sling TV will be closely watched in the media industry as the television ecosystem undergoes a drastic change.

For Dish, it will be a delicate balance: it does not want to encourage more people to dump its more-costly core satellite service for Sling TV.

For the third quarter, Dish said it lost about 12,000 pay-TV subscribers compared with the second quarter. It has about 14 million subscribers, making it the second-largest U.S. satellite TV company.

Dish CEO Joe Clayton said in an interview that Dish knew its satellite TV business was maturing and started thinking about the video streaming service several years ago.

The 18 to 35 year-old target demographic is not buying pay TV, said Clayton, who views Sling TV as complementary.

“We are not only launching a new product category but a new industry,” he said.

Dish is embarking on the new service as it battles over distribution agreements with media companies, including CBS Corp, which launched a brief blackout, Twenty-First Century Fox’s cable news and business networks, which have been pulled from Dish, and Turner Broadcasting.

Controlled by Charlie Ergen, Dish is known as an aggressive company. It launched a failed $ 25.5 billion bid for mobile phone operator Sprint and has often rolled out new technologies, frequently to the ire of its media partners.

Dish’s Auto Hop is one such example. The DVR set-top box, which automatically skips commercials, prompted litigation from CBS, Disney and Fox.

Aereo Cleared To Auction TV Streaming Technology In Bankruptcy Deal

(Reuters) – A bankruptcy court has allowed defunct video streaming company Aereo Inc to auction its TV streaming technology assets, according to court papers published on Friday.

The U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Manhattan ruled on Wednesday that Aereo could sell its assets, after the company reached an agreement with broadcasters over the sale process.

These broadcasters include CBS Corp, Comcast Corp’s NBC, Walt Disney Co’s ABC and Twenty-First Century Fox Inc’s Fox.

Under the agreement, Aereo will allow the broadcasters to attend the auction of the assets and provide them a weekly update on the status of the sale process.

Aereo filed for bankruptcy in November, five months after the U.S. Supreme Court said it violated broadcasters’ copyrights by capturing live and recorded programs on miniature antennas and transmitting them to subscribers for $ 8-$ 12 a month.

That decision effectively closed down New York-based Aereo, whose business model was to offer a less-expensive alternative to cable television.

The case is In re: Aereo Inc, U.S. Bankruptcy Court, Southern District of New York, No. 14-13200.

Confessions of a Serial Songwriter: Streaming and Dreaming

2014-09-01-photo.JPG

Oh. My. God. Oh. My. God. Omgid Omigod Omigod. I am so embarrassed. I’m a grown woman and I just got the equivalent of a time out.

This morning, I sat down to address some comments on a blog post of mine, and what did I see? Or not see? At the end of it where there used to be a video of Lea Michele and Cory Monteith singing a song from Glee, there was now a black rectangle with a little red guy inside and a message that said, ‘The YouTube account associated with this video has been terminated due to multiple notifications of copyright infringement.’ Like I said. Omigod.

Horrified, I scrambled to my YouTube account. It was still in tact. Phew. Apparently I was not the infringer. I did not upload that video, but indeed, I borrowed it. And that wasn’t very nice of me. I embedded that naughty uploader’s tainted URL. Or “Earl” as I have come to call it. (Isn’t that so much easier to say than U-R-L?)

Truth is, in the back of my mind I knew I was doing something I wasn’t supposed to do. Me of all people. Me, writer of songs for which I would like to be compensated fairly.

I’ve pretty much been a law-abiding blogger. I’ve been paying $ 15 a piece for licensed Shutterstock images.

Hard copy images have always had a price, (just like recorded music). And when the cyber revolution presented itself and it became possible to use an image without paying for it laws were put into place that prevented that from happening. Photographers have families to feed. They bust their butts to do good work and make a living. I totally get it. But what about songwriters?

The digital marketplace has made fair compensation for use of music problematic.

My songs are streamed over and over again. And my royalty statements reflect a mere pittance of what they used to. There is more and more easy access to music but less and less compensation for the creators of it. As James S. Levine reported in his recent commentary, “The World Has Changed, It’s Time Our Music Licensing System Did Too,” it takes one million streams on Pandora for a songwriter to earn $ 90. Sigh.

Anyway, I did what I often do in the fluster of an internet faux pas (or when I’m embarrassed because of a poorly formatted tweet). I had a chat with my go-to media gal in London. She has some kind of Batphone on which we can communicate affordably. She always has a sober way of explaining online best practices to someone who, up until Jan 1 of this year, didn’t know how to send a friend request or tag a photo.

She explained the difference between previewed images and ones that appear on a host site. She talked to me about Creative Commons and savings packages on Shutterstock. Today I’m a little more image savvy than I was yesterday. Although she’s preaching to the choir. I understand how important it is to make sure the photographer survives. Even the despicable paparazzi who intrude on people’s private space. And private parts. Like the one who took that infamous photo of Britney’s crotch. Even him. (He’s probably streaming one of my songs right now.) If we can protect him, why can’t we protect the livelihood of the musician?

Don’t get me wrong. I’m not asking for the real reasons. I know the facts. I know all about the consent decree, (royalty rate regulation which hasn’t been updated since the 1940’s.) I’ve signed the Songwriters Equity Act and I imagine I’ll be in Washington in the near future marching for the cause. I know about the lobbyists who argue on behalf of digital media companies against balanced reform. I’m not seeking literal answers. I ask out of sheer exasperation. This is strictly emotional. Rhetorical.

If we were able to sort things out so civilly for other vulnerable parties, why can’t we cut through the muck and get it right for the songwriter? We have families too. 🙁
