Equinox Hotel Recruits Celebrity Stylist Kate Young to Design Uniforms for Staffers

Fashion has always been infused in the Equinox brand and in line with that ethos celebrity stylist and creative consultant Kate Young has designed the uniforms for the new Equinox Hotel.
She is in good company, with photographer Nick Knight shooting the short film featuring Naomi Campbell to promote the new luxury property. Started as a more stylized fitness club in New York 25 years ago, Equinox now has 100 clubs in the U.S., U.K. and Canada. Building on its health-is-wealth mind-set, the company’s new Hudson Yards property starts welcoming guests on Monday. The 212-room property’s design required enlisting David Rockwell/Rockwell Group, Ken Smith Workshop and David Childs/SOM, as well as Joyce Wang for the Equinox Fitness Club and Spa.
In an interview Friday, Young said she approached the uniform project much like she would working with one of her celebrity clients. The stylist was interested in the DNA of the brand, determining what they want to accomplish, identifying the ideal customer and “feeling out within the context of New York City, Hudson Yards and Equinox the brand what the look should be.”
To some degree, her Intuition turned out to be a casting vote. “The hotel is cool because it sort of

Hollywood Stylist Karla Welch Designs Summer Collection for Express

Super-stylist Karla Welch is bringing her Hollywood magic to the masses once again, this time at Express.
The celebrity wardrobe architect for Tracee Ellis Ross, Busy Phillips, Elisabeth Moss, Cleo Wade, Justin Bieber and more is teaming with the retailer on a 20-piece capsule collection of everyday summer basics with a twist in neutral hues, including oversize linen boyfriend blazers (“shoulder pads are back” she says); mechanic’s jumpsuits; tie-dye cropped Ts; men’s wear-inspired shirts; clear sequin-coated boxing shorts; off-shoulder eyelet lace shifts, and high-waist Latex miniskirts. Launching July 17 in sizes 00 to 18, the Express x Karla collection is priced $ 19.90 to $ 128, and will be sold at select stores and online.
“I actually hate summer dressing, that’s how I went into this. But this is who I am and what I want to wear. I wanted to keep it really limited and small and just what you need,” said Welch, an L.A. fashion fixture known as much for her tomboyish personal style and democratic-leaning political Instagram posts as for her red-carpet finesse.
[In Hollywood], “red carpets are massive fashion moments. But for every woman out there and every guy, every day is a fashion moment and it feels great to like

Hollywood Stylist Anita Patrickson’s Amanu Sandal Brand Sets Hotel Partnership

Hollywood stylist Anita Patrickson has aligned with Singita luxury lodges to bring her made-to-order Amanu sandals to resorts in South Africa. It’s the first move into the hospitality sector for the brand, and a full circle moment for Patrickson, who originally hails from Capetown.
She parlayed her work as a fashion stylist for Julianne Hough, Portia de Rossi and others into a custom shoe business that launched last year in L.A., inspired both by traditional sandals made using tire rubber in Africa, and the tradition of resort sandal making on the island of Capri.
Now she’s bringing the eco-conscious, high-touch experience  customers get in her West Hollywood flagship to guests at Singita. In June, Patrickson traveled to South Africa with one of the U.S. makers to train the staff at Singita Ebony Lodge and Lemombo Lodge to cobble the shoes, priced $ 160 to $ 275, from an array of leathers, with pony hair and feather trim, in under an hour.

Melania Trump’s Stylist to be Honored by City Officials in French Hometown

As the year comes to a close, First Lady Melania Trump’s designer choices have been the focus of plenty of listicles.
Soon her stylist of choice, Hervé Pierre, will be in the spotlight in his hometown. Pierre’s holiday celebrations will be extended Wednesday in Sancerre, France, where he will receive the keys to the city.
“I’m so touched because everyone is working in the wine industry or in the goat cheese industry. Sancerre is located on top of a hill, which is where all the vineyards are. And at the bottom of the hill you have Chavignol goat cheese, which is the most delicious and expensive one in the world — for people who like goat cheese.” he said. “It was not so easy as a kid to do fashion in that environment.”
“The good news was that they knew what I wanted to do. You have a lot of parents who look at their teenagers and say, ‘What are we going to do with that one?’ That was not the case with my parents. I knew exactly what I wanted to do — which university, which school. It was actually a very straight line. There were no surprises,” he said.

Virgil Abloh Taps Stylist Christine Centenera for Louis Vuitton Debut

RECRUITING DOWN UNDER: Virgil Abloh is working with Australian stylist and Vogue Australia fashion director Christine Centenera for his debut Louis Vuitton men’s collection, which will be presented in Paris on June 21, WWD has learned.
According to her sole international agent —Ben Hams at the Sydney-based agency M.A.P. —  Centenera is consulting to Louis Vuitton’s newly appointed men’s wear artistic director on his spring collection, will be styling the show and has been back and forth between her New York base and Paris working on the project since April. On Friday, she was en route to Paris for the final show preparations, Hams said.
Although Centenera has worked with Vogue Australia since 2012 — from 2016, based out of New York — she has also been building a parallel freelance styling career. Other clients have included Kanye West, Kim Kardashian and Estée Lauder, for the latter’s fall 2017 Victoria Beckham collection campaign shot by Lachlan Bailey. Centenera met Abloh while both were working with West.
Centenera has consulted to West on all his runway collections since his debut spring 2012 women’s wear show in 2011. At the time she was the fashion editor of Harper’s Bazaar Australia and Abloh was the creative director of West’s creative agency, Donda.

Julianne Hough, Stylist Anita Patrickson Toast Amanu, Love United

On Thursday night, Julianne Hough helped her friend and stylist Anita Patrickson celebrate her new custom sandal brand Amanu, while Patrickson returned the favor by donating a portion of evening’s proceeds to Hough’s charity Love United.
“It’s our first fancy event,” giggled Hough. “Our first gala,” joked Patrickson.
They were joined by friends Abigail Spencer, Brooklyn Decker, Cassandra Grey, Samantha Ronson, Louise Roe, Fuschia Kate Sumner, Natasha Bedingfield, Nathan Turner and Hough’s husband Brooks Laich.
Patrickson, who hails from Kenya, introduced Hough and Laich to Africa, where the two vacationed in 2016 and honeymooned a year later. While there, they were inspired to create their nonprofit Love United, and decided to partner with Charity: Water to help build clean and sustainable drinking water wells there.
“We fell in love with the people, the environment, the whole way of life. We realized how grateful we are for the necessities that we have and we wanted to find a way to bring those basic resources to others,” said Hough.
She recalled interviewing Patrickson for the stylist job years ago. “One thing that made me want to work with her was her values and her viewpoint on fashion and that she doesn’t want to be wasteful. She is

Celebrity Stylist Ilaria Urbinati Teams With Strong Suit

NEW YORK — Expect to see Armie Hammer sporting a black-and-white hopsack sport coat on a red carpet sometime soon.
The jacket is part of a collaboration between celebrity stylist Ilaria Urbinati and the Little Rock, Ark.-based Strong Suit that will be launching for spring.
The pair was introduced around two years ago by actress Cameron Richardson, and the result of that meeting will be a collection of men’s suits, sport coats and dress shirts under the Strong Suit by Ilaria Urbinati label that will launch at Nordstrom’s new men’s store slated to open in New York in April. The collection will also be carried at the retailer’s Melrose Place store in Los Angeles.
“Ilaria is genuinely looking for the best style for her clients,” said Jamie Davidson, founder and creative director of Strong Suit, which was purchased one year ago by Oxford Industries. “She cares about the substance of the clothes, not the branding. So I’m incredibly grateful that she decided to work with a little start-up from Little Rock.”
The negotiations with Nordstrom, which carries Strong Suit’s regular men’s collection at several stores, started over a year ago. But once they saw the collection, “they were totally on board with it,” he said.

Judy Blame, Stylist, Jewelry Designer, Fashion Maverick Dead at 58

LONDON — The stylist, jeweler and underground club king Judy Blame has died at 58.
Known as a man of many trades, Blame ran underground clubs in London and later segued into styling where he worked with a range of talents including Boy George, Neneh Cherry, John Galliano and Kim Jones at Louis Vuitton.
He was also known for his outlandish jewelry designs made from artifacts that he dredged up from the mud of the Thames. He was a punk to his core.
Nick Knight described Blame as “always totally unique, always a champion of the underdog, always fiercely anti-fascist and anti-establishment, always inspiring, always so immensely talented and always one hundred percent brilliant. Judy, the world will be a much darker place without you, but your life’s work will continue to shine and to show this world that creativity and art are the highest forms of human achievement,” Knight added.
Blame started his career working alongside John Moore from The House of Beauty and Culture and the late photographer Rei Petri.
His work was celebrated by London’s ICA in 2016, with the space presenting his first solo exhibition, a retrospective called Judy Blame: Never Again that featured Blame’s jewelry and mixed media art.

Cockpit USA Collaborates With Stylist Mike B.

Mike B., whose real name is Mike Barnett, has teamed with Cockpit USA, the heritage outerwear brand.
For Barnett, a celebrity stylist whose client list includes A$ AP Ferg, Sean Combs, the Migos and Swizz Beatz, this partnership is a full-circle moment.
He met Jacky Clyman, the owner of Cockpit USA, in the Nineties via fax and e-mail while working on The Bad Boy Entertainment leather jackets that Avirex, which was once owned by Cockpit USA, produced. They met again in New York and Barnett pitched his brand concept to Clyman, who obliged.
“During the Nineties, Avirex and Cockpit helped hip-hop culture in terms of outerwear. If you follow hip-hop, there are different eras of leather jackets. In the late 2000s, it was all about having a good Avirex or Cockpit bomber.”
Barnett has worked with the Cockpit design team to create a collection of outerwear, which includes a G1 Top Gun bomber with a removable collar, a shearling coat and a longer shearling style with a belt. The coats, which retail from $ 900 to $ 2,100, are all black with Cockpit’s signature map lining. The capsule is available now on Cockpit’s e-commerce site and Mike B.’s site.

Celebrity Stylist Ilaria Urbinati Designs Women’s Capsule for Eddie Bauer

Celebrity stylist Ilaria Urbinati and Eddie Bauer have reunited for another limited-edition capsule collection, this one for women and launching for fall 2017 at select Eddie Bauer stores and eddiebauer.com in late September. Urbinati last paired with the Seattle-based vertical retailer in 2015 for a men’s capsule collection launched at Sundance Film Festival.
“We appreciate the way she has remained true to the brand’s ethos while modernizing some of our classic silhouettes, creating a fresh take on many of Eddie Bauer’s iconic pieces,” said Eddie Bauer chief executive officer Mike Egeck. “Ilaria’s sense of style, combined with Eddie Bauer’s rich outdoor heritage, has created something truly special that is relevant for today’s outdoor and fashion consumer.”

Fashion Man Hunt: Designers Scammed Out of Thousands by Fraud Stylist

FAKING IT: London-based Dazed media, which publishes Dazed & Confused and AnOther Man, has alerted fashion colleagues worldwide to a fraudster stylist who’s been swiping samples for non-existent shoots.
As a result, fashion and public relations companies are looking for a man who calls himself Arnaud Henry Mensan. He claims to be international editor-at-large for Dazed & Confused and has already stolen tens of thousands of dollars worth of samples for “shoots” at Dazed, AnOther Man and Elle France.
Dazed discovered the fraud after the designer Sadie Clayton got in touch over the summer to inquire about four samples she had sent to Mensan, in Japan, for shoots alleged to be taking place for Dazed and i-D magazine.
According to emails, every time the designer requested the samples be returned to her, Mensan said he would speak to his team to get the courier’s tracking number, which never happened. Mensan also told the designer that he’d spoken to the British customs office to sort things out. Clayton is still waiting for her samples.
“At one point, he did say I should make an invoice to claim the money back from Dazed. So really he hasn’t a clue what’s going on and keeps fobbing me off with lies,”

Making of a Style Icon: The Stylist Behind Laverne Cox’s Fashion

She’s beauty, she’s grace, she’s ruling the red carpet. Actress Laverne Cox, star of Netflix’s Orange Is The New Black, wherever she goes, is turning heads and wowing the press with her elegantly unique style.

After being named one of Time‘s 100 Most Influential People, scoring a coveted spot on People‘s Most Beautiful People list, and appearing on numerous magazine covers, it’s hard to keep up with this megastar.

But even a great deal more is going on. Laverne Cox is establishing herself as not just a leading figure promoting the transgender community, but also as a style icon.

It is often thought that behind most exceedingly successful individuals is a person helping navigate the tricky waters of stardom. So who’s the stylist working with Laverne to perfect her sophisticated aesthetic? Christina Pacelli, stylist to Laverne, shares with us the process of elevating someone into style stardom.

As most fashion boys and girls do, this Huntington Beach, California native discovered her love for fashion at a young age. She says she first became fixated on clothes in fourth grade. Back-to‐school‐shopping was the highlight of her year. With a mother from Mexico and a first-generation Italian father, Pacelli says her upbringing was anything but conventional, as she has been on her own and financially autonomous since the tender age of 15.

Clueless‘s Cher and My‐So‐Called‐Life‘s Jared Leto have all provided inspiration to Pacelli, who admires their hard-to-achieve “I don’t give a damn” look.

After studying Communications and Law at UCLA, she began her professional career as an entertainment and lifestyle publicist. She then transitioned to her love of fashion and began apprenticing for stylists such as New York‐based Anna Katsanis, who has styled editorials for major magazines around the world.

Through her publicist relationships, Pacelli was introduced to Laverne and it was fireworks from the start.

Pacelli says:

Laverne and I share the same stylistic approach. She has an admirable sense of fashion, and a great point of view when it comes to personal style and the fashion industry. She is very involved in her styling, which I believe comes through in her looks. In Laverne’s words, ‘I follow the guiding pillars of FFPS in fashion — Fit, Fabric, Proportion and Silhouette. If all are right, then the look will translate well’

But how do all of the buzz-worthy looks come together? From custom Marc Bouwer to Viktor Luna, Cox and Pacelli have procured show‐stopping styles.

Pacelli says:

When Laverne and I first began working together, we briefed one another on our individual stylistic philosophies. With Laverne, it is not simply about wearing a designer garment. What she wears embodies her personality, confidence and her role for the occasion, or it will feel out of place and naturally won’t be worn.

With so many notable moments, Pacelli says that some of her proudest times with Laverne include the 2014 Emmy Awards in custom Marc Bouwer, the Creative Arts Emmys and Entertainment Weekly party in Donna Karan and the White House Correspondents Dinner in Ines Di Santo. Pacelli notes, “Laverne’s style has always been feminine and pretty. Our work together has built upon that, to take her style to non-obvious places and further showcase her confidence, grace, strength and sophistication.”

Landing spots on countless best‐dressed lists, Christina does not disregard the strides they have made together.

Pacelli describes:

She has been called a style icon on the rise. I do not disagree with that. She is making history with her presence in the industry and I do not take the job lightly. As a transgender black woman who has already pioneered so much, and broken barriers, the way Laverne looks and dresses has an impact and influence upon so many people, LGBT or non‐LGBT. People have shared with me they have been moved to tears observing Laverne because of what she stands for and how she inspired them with her visual presence.

Christina herself has been tapped to be featured in a Viacom series, which will air on MTV and Netflix.

As Laverne continues to gain meteoric success and notoriety, it’s clear we have a great deal of fierce fashion to look forward to. And not only will the fashion be beautiful, but Cox and Pacelli will together be defying cultural norms and changing the world’s perception of the transgender community.

“I knew that styling Laverne Cox came with more responsibility than just vanity. She inspires people simply by what she is wearing. And then she speaks and inspires them more. I understand and take my responsibility very seriously. I know eyes are on Laverne from all over the world.”

Robin Wright’s House of Cards Style: A How-To Guide From Her Stylist

I am drawn to powerful women who prefer pearls to diamonds, dresses to pants and pencil skirts to mini skirts. Some of these women are real, such as Jackie Kennedy or my godmother Dominique. And some are fictional, such as Catherine Banning or Claire Underwood, who is my latest fashion obsession.

2015-04-21-1429641059-2928826-hoc_ps3_039_h.jpg

Courtesy of Netflix

For the third season of this hit Netflix show, Robin Wright asked her personal stylist Kemal Harris to style Claire Underwood. Thus, Harris enters the picture and takes over Claire’s wardrobe from Tom Broecker, who was costume designer for Season 1, and Johanna Argan who styled all characters during Season 2 and continues to style the rest of the cast in Season 3.

An evolution of Claire’s style makes sense at this juncture in the story. In Season 3, Claire is in a very different headspace. During the first two seasons, she was working hard, always fighting to get to the top. Her wardrobe reflected that — mostly black, very structured pieces, Claire was always ready for battle.

2015-04-21-1429642310-9389072-hoc_bs3_021_h.jpg

Courtesy of Netflix

In Season 3, she is at the top of the ladder — she is in the White House. Her style illustrates this slight break in her struggle: Everything is a bit softer, a bit more feminine. Instead of her usual black armor, Claire is wearing softer colors, softer fabrics and fuller skirts. Thanks to Kemal Harris, costume designer and red carpet stylist.

Now represented by The Wall Group, Harris is from Vancouver BC. She studied fashion design there, and from the start was interested in the styling aspect of fashion. Working with photographers, she eventually made her way to New York City and Robin Wright became her client. Harris styled her for the red carpet and other events. “The red carpet is very competitive, you can’t wear anything that has been worn before, the focus is on trying to get exclusive looks from designers that are right off the runway” she says. Dressing a fictional character is very different. “There is so much more to consider than if anyone ever worn this dress before… the story arc, the setting, the lighting, the time of day” Harris explains.

Stylist Kemal Harris Courtesy of Kemal Harris

What if you wanted to move from fiction to reality? What are the fashion lessons we can learn from Claire Underwood in Season 3?

1. Claire’s clothes fit her perfectly. Indeed, it is all about fit. Harris had a mannequin built to Wright’s exact measurements so as to be able to tailor outfits to her exactly, without her having to be there for all the fittings. Harris explains: “We tailor almost every piece to her fit; not everyone can afford to do that of course, but having a great tailor makes all of the difference.” Buy one less pair of shoes and instead have your pants and dresses tailored.

2. Claire is not much of a pants girl. Pencil skirts. Full skirts. Fitted dresses. More feminine, and somehow more powerful.

3. Claire is even less of a prints girl. She prefers solid colors. Harris laughs: “We did one striped blouse in Season 3. That is as far as we went. Anything beyond that is too flamboyant for Claire’s character. She is so classic.”

4. Claire’s idea of color remains muted. Deep burgundy, hunter green, violet, light gray, oatmeal. Otherwise, her color palette is black, white and charcoal.

5. Claire is not into jewelry or accessories. If she has to choose, she chooses pearls over diamonds. A single strand of pearls as a necklace, sometimes a single strand bracelet. And of course, her Cartier watch. That has been her trademark from the start. Harris adds “the Cartier team is such a delight to work with, they let me look through their archives for inspiration.”

6. Claire does not own a pair of jeans, or sweatpants. Her version of casual are pants with cuffs (when she does wear pants), and a cashmere sweater. Or a pair of black silk pajamas.

7. Claire’s preferred sleeve length is three quarters. So much so that Harris often has to alter the sleeve length of the outfits to fit this rule. And oh how powerful does this look with long black leather gloves?

8. Claire only wears stilettos — Manolos and Louboutins, specifically. You will not see her in a wedge or flats. Unless she is running of course.

9. Claire loves a statement purse. YSL Sac du Jour is her go-to, although an Hermes Kelly bag does make its appearance. As does a Ralph Lauren beaded clutch.

10. Claire likes contemporary designers. In addition to classics such as Ralph Lauren, Armani, and Burberry, she wears up and comers such as Altuzarra, Jason Wu, Derek Lam.

I ask Harris to describe Claire’s style in three words: “Timeless. Decisive. Feminine.”

Timeless requires no explanation.

Decisive because every look is a complete statement. There’s no flip-flopping on the style direction, there is an underlying strength in the cut and fit. The message is that of a powerful woman. Nothing is superfluous, nothing is fussy. She makes bold choices like the Ralph Lauren gown for the State Dinner based on her poise and confidence.

And feminine: Not the first word that jumps to my mind when I think about Claire, yet so very accurate. Feminine, not in a “mini skirt” kind of way. More in a “my clothes fit so well you can’t help but see my figure” kind of way. No one would ever mistake Claire for a man…
