Byronesque.com Takes Its Rebellion to Tokyo

Byronesque.com, the editorially driven e-commerce site and app specializing in contemporary vintage fashion, has taken up residence at Opening Ceremony‘s Shibuya location in Tokyo through Oct. 30, to ply its provocative vintage subculture to Tokyo Fashion Week. “What will you be remembered for,” the name of the Byronesque.com sale, is a nod to a time when creativity was more important than the celebrity and commerce of today.
Byronesque.com, which thrives on its subversive reputation, enlisted the Shichifukujin crew of graffiti artists to “f–k up Opening Ceremony’s windows in a display of cultural disappointment,” said Gill Linton, the web site’s editor in chief and chief executive officer. Shichifukujin tagged store windows with messages about the banality of fashion and what Linton calls “today’s culture of no-culture.” Sprayed statements included, “F–k your Instagram look” and “Beware of cheap imitations.”
“Tagging, by its very nature is an ephemeral marking of territory,” said Byronesque.com creative director, Justin Westover. “By covering the window in layers of changing and overwritten tags, we’re drawing attention to the superficial transience of contemporary culture.”

The collection for Opening Ceremony includes sought-after men’s and women’s pieces from the Nineties through the mid-Aughts by Helmut Lang, Rick Owens, Comme des Garçons and some rare, authenticated Seditionaries pieces. London’s Vexed Generation

SNL Takes on Harvey Weinstein Scandal: ‘It’s Not a Mistake — It’s a Full Season of Law & Order’

One week after Saturday Night Live made last minute cuts on jokes about Harvey Weinstein‘s sexual misconduct scandal, the sketch show came out swinging against the movie mogul.

During Saturday’s “Weekend Update” segment, Colin Jost and Michael Che jumped right in with Weinstein jokes, combined with the news of Apple’s new emojis.

“Apple announced it will add hundreds of new emojis to its iOS system including a person at a spa, a vomiting face and a shushing finger — finally giving emoji fans the ability to describe what it was like to work for Harvey Weinstein,” host Jost said.

Jost then announced that the producer is seeking treatment.

“Somehow, I don’t think that is going to help anybody,” he said. “He doesn’t need sex rehab. He needs a specialized facility where there are no women, no contact with the outside world, metal bars, and it’s a prison.”

RELATED: The Harvey Weinstein Scandal — All of the Hollywood Figures Who Have Spoken Out Against Movie Mogul

Co-anchor Che also didn’t hold back.

“This is a tough spot for a comedian because it’s so hard to make jokes about sexual assault, but it’s so easy to make jokes about a guy that looks like this,” he said. “I mean, he looks like chewed bubblegum rolled in cat hair.”

Che added, “Weinstein told reporters that ‘we all make mistakes,’ but you assaulted dozens of women — that’s not a mistake, that’s a full season of Law and Order.”

Multiple allegations of sexual misconduct, which came to light in an Oct. 5 New York Times exposé and were compounded by a subsequent investigation by the New Yorker, have been brought against Weinstein in the past few weeks.

Following the initial report, Weinstein said in a statement that he was working with therapists and planned to “deal with this issue head-on.” He has since been fired from his powerhouse studio, the Weinstein Company, and his wife, Marchesa designer Georgina Chapman, has announced she’s leaving him.

In response to the lengthy allegations made against Weinstein in the New Yorker piece, a spokesperson for Weinstein said, “Any allegations of non-consensual sex are unequivocally denied by Mr. Weinstein.”

In another sketch, Aidy Bryant moderated a panel of three screen legends — Leslie Jones as Viola Davis, Cecily Strong as Marion Cotillard and Kate McKinnon playing fan-favorite character Debette Goldry — discussing sexual harassment in the industry through the years.

“Have I ever experienced sexual harassment in Hollywood? Good Friday, where do you want me to start?” Goldry exclaimed. “Women being harassed is Hollywood. Everything old is new again. Producers are abusing starlets. There’s Nazis marching in the street. And suddenly nude pantyhose are on-trend. I have never felt more at home.”

She added, “When’s polio coming back? This will be fun.”

The actresses discussed their own experiences will sexual harassment, such as men getting naked or trying to coerce them into giving a massage — allegations that mirror what women have said against Weinstein.

“I did have one meeting with Harvey,” McKinnon’s character said. “I was invited to his hotel room and when I arrived he was naked, hanging upside down from a monkey bar. He tried to trick me into thinking his genitals were actually his face. It almost worked. The resemblance is uncanny.”

McKinnon turned to the camera for the final word against sexual harassment and assault.

“Violence against women, it doesn’t just happen to famous actresses, it’s everywhere, d— it! It’s time we take it seriously,” said Goldry. “Pandora’s box is open now, and Pandora’s p—-d.”

Rihanna Takes Center Stage at Bloomingdale’s

Rihanna kept her fans waiting for nearly two hours on Friday at Bloomingdale’s. But no matter. The hard-core Rihanna crowd was happy to sway to her music and mouth every word of every one of her songs played by DJ Pedro. “I’m still in love with you, boy… ” “Time to get schooled,” said the invitation to the launch of the Fenty x Puma by Rihanna fall 2017 collection, which was billed as a pep rally for Fenty U.
Bloomingdale’s second floor — akak Fenty country — was outfitted with a podium that said Fenty U. Props such as bullhorns and pom-poms were strewn about, and about a dozen fans were chosen to sit on benches, like the cheering squad. Given Fenty x Puma items to wear over their clothes by Bloomingdale’s staffers, nobody donned the merchandise, except for the caps.
Asked if this was his scene, Tony Spring, Bloomingdale’s chairman and chief executive officer, said, “This is Rihanna, Fenty and Bloomingdale’s scene. It’s been a good business for us. She has a nice feel for product and style. She’s an icon in the entertainment world and has a true passion for the fashion business. Our culture is influenced by people with

Misha Nonoo Takes On-Demand Manufacturing to Offer Wider Size Range

BEING MORE DIRECT: Having relaunched the business as direct-to-consumer more than a year ago, Nonoo started to think about on-demand manufacturing four or five months in. Seasonality was an initial motivator to sell straight to shoppers, but sustainability made her seek a manufacturing partner that would spare any fabric liability, take care of marking and grading and ensure cutting and sewing with a two-day turnaround time.
After six factories bid for the direct-to-consumer business, the designer decided on her existing partner — a “very entrepreneurial” Chinese factory owner, who was born and raised in New York City. Once an order is placed on her site, the item is cut and sewn in two days and then shipped directly to customers with U.S. ones receiving their merchandise in three days. “In a way, it’s this idea of going back to old school luxury but almost on a fast fashion calendar. In doing that, I realized that not only would I cut out more inventory, I would also cut out contributing to more waste. I would also be able to offer more sizes,” she said.
Earlier this month she started offering her Easy Eight in sizes from extra small to extra large, and from

Stevie Wonder Takes a Knee ‘for America’ in Solidarity After Trump’s Colin Kaepernick Tirade

Stevie Wonder took to his knee in solidarity with Colin Kaepernick and other athletes who previously knelt during the national anthem to protest police brutality against African-Americans.

Before performing hits such as “Higher Ground” and “Overjoyed” at Global Citizen Festival in New York City on Saturday, the 67-year-old singer started his headlining set by addressing the controversy reignited by President Donald Trump’s most recent remarks about NFL player who kneel during the national anthem.

“Tonight, I’m taking a knee for America,” Wonder said as he knelt with his son Kwame Morris. “Not just one knee, but I’m taking both knees. Both knees in prayer for our planet, our future, leaders of our world and our globe. Amen.”

He added, “I wanted to say that prayer before I serve you my musical meal.”

RELATED VIDEO: Diddy Tells NFL Players to ‘Stand Up for Each Other’ After Trump’s Colin Kaepernick Tirade

During a rally speech in Alabama on Friday, Trump stated, “Wouldn’t you love to see one of these NFL owners, when somebody disrespects our flag, say, ‘Get that son of a b–ch off the field right now. Out, you’re fired.’”

He followed this up by pouring more gasoline on the fire with a series of tweets. “If a player wants the privilege of making millions of dollars in the NFL, or other leagues, he or she should not be allowed to disrespect…our Great American Flag (or Country) and should stand for the National Anthem,” he wrote. “If not, YOU’RE FIRED. Find something else to do!”

Numerous celebrities — including Diddy — have also joined in standing behind the players, causing a resurgence of the #TakeAKnee hashtag on social media.

RELATED VIDEO: Watch: Natasha Stoynoff Breaks Silence, Accuses Donald Trump of Sexual Attack

In August 2016, San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick made headlines for refusing to stand for the national anthem.

“I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color,” Kaepernick said at the time. “To me, this is bigger than football and it would be selfish on my part to look the other way. There are bodies in the street and people getting paid leave and getting away with murder.”

EXCLUSIVE: Jonathan Anderson Takes a Tartan Turn for First Uniqlo Collection

LONDON — Jonathan Anderson was thinking “universal and quirky,” for the first J.W. Anderson collaboration with Uniqlo, a mash-up of urban, collegiate and military-inspired looks and basics in oversized proportions, tartan and stripes.
The 33-piece collection for Uniqlo’s LifeWear, which was first revealed in March, will launch on September 19 in the U.K., followed by other markets. The collection is for men and women with pieces including a duffle coat, an oversized striped turtleneck with ties around the wrists, a crewneck sweater with an abstract fish floating across the front, a tartan down jacket and a matching padded tote.

“The point of doing this collaboration was that I believe in democracy in fashion,” said Anderson. “What I hope will be achieved is that any age demographic can pick up and find something within the collection to relate to. Doing something with Uniqlo means you come up with a wardrobe which is universal and quirky.”

Tesco Takes Toxins Out of Textiles From F&F Clothing Range

DETOX DIET: After committing to the Greenpeace Detox Campaign in June, Britain’s Tesco, one of the world’s largest retailers, said it would immediately begin the process of becoming toxin-free by 2020.
Tesco’s clothing brand, F&F, has joined 79 other international brands and suppliers in the fight against climate change. The F&F brand offers clothing for men, women, children and babies.
The brand has promised to eradicate hazardous chemicals from its supply chain together with brands such as the Swedish fast-fashion giant Hennes & Mauritz and Levi Strauss & Co.
It has committed to sell only products manufactured in a way that protects not only the environment but also workers and their supply chains.
The Greenpeace Detox Campaign, which was launched in 2011, now monitors 15 percent of worldwide textile production.
“In only six years, forerunners of the textile sector went from total denial and opacity of their supply chain to transparency and the banning of all hazardous chemicals. Tesco’s commitment shows the rest of the industry that using hazardous chemicals is not an option anymore” said Kirsten Brodde, Greenpeace Germany’s project lead of the Detox Campaign.
Part of Tesco’s commitment includes thinking ahead and eliminating questionable substances which have not yet been proved to be toxic. Tesco also

Tokyo Photographer Kensaku Kakimoto Takes Aim at Fine Art With Taka Ishii Gallery Show

SKY-HIGH ART: As friends, old and new, filed through Kensaku Kakimoto’s “Hyomen” exhibition at the Taka Ishii gallery Thursday, the photographer chatted about his first solo show in the U.S..
“Taka thought it was important to show the work while it’s so pure,” the photographer said through a translator, adding that his fine art is the complete opposite of his commercial work as a cinematographer, producer and video artist. “My commercial work is done to sell products. The motivation is to make products look good whereas this is purely my own sort of spontaneous work. It’s my point of view of the world.”
The Upper East Side gallery will run the exhibition through June, and has his new book “Translator.” Kakimoto recently shot a video for a Super Mario Bros. app and a film for Under Armour about women’s empowerment. In addition to shooting music videos, he often is airborne filming automobile commercials more often than not in Iceland. “Often when we’re doing those shots, I’ve thought wouldn’t it be fun if you could go a little higher, to see the world a little higher — not as high as being in a jet but being as high as in a helicopter,”

Trevor Noah Takes Down Donald Trump For ‘Gangsta’ Climate Move

President Donald Trump’s announcement that he’s withdrawing the U.S. from the Paris climate agreement was just like an episode of “The Bachelorette,” according to Trevor Noah.

Thursday’s “Daily Show” screened the moment outside the White House in which Trump slowly built up to his big announcement. Noah reimagined the president saying, “Earth, we had a great time in the hot tub, but I’ve gotta give a rose to coal, my black beauty, I choose you.”

Then the host got serious about Trump’s action.

“We all joke about him destroying the world, but this could be it,” he said.  “And can I just say, telling nature to go fuck itself while standing in a garden is a pretty gangsta move, I’m not gonna lie.”

Noah said the only way that it could’ve been more messed up would be if a polar bear was standing in the background during the announcement. If that happened, the comedian joked, he’s sure the president’s son Eric Trump would’ve shown up and shot the animal. “Father, look what I’ve brought you. Do you love me now?” he said in his best Eric Trump impersonation.

Woman Takes Engagement Photos With Her One True Love: Popeyes Chicken

When it comes to being engaged, Elyse Chelsea Clark is throwing caution to the wind, er, wing.

The New Orleans bartender is such a fan of Popeyes Chicken that she decided to do a series of engagement photos with her favorite fast food.

Then she posted the poultry-centered pics on Facebook with this note: “I’m finally engaged!”

The Popeyes engagement pics taken by photographer Whitney Tucker show Clark looking romantically at chicken boxes…

Strolling through the park with the object of her affection …

And smooching that box with the same passion that is typically reserved for love’s kiss.

Oh, and she likes the biscuits too.

The photos might be funny, but Clark’s passion for Popeyes is real and true.

“I have a really big love for Popeyes,” she told the New Orleans Times-Picayne. “I eat it all the time.”

The chain responded to Clark’s engagement spread with this tweet.

Between 6:55 a.m and 8:14 a.m ET on Wednesday morning, President Donald Trump sent out five tweets.

Four of the tweets dealt with the typical stuff, like tax returns, the auto industry, CEOs, “FAKE NEWS” and the like. But one tweet stood out among the rest. That tweet was about Snoop Dogg.

He sent a few more tweets out afterward. Like this:

And like that:

And like this:

And, uh ― then it went silent for a while.

But exactly 40 minutes after the president posted his final tweet, the official POTUS Twitter account literally copied, pasted and published the same exact Snoop Dogg tweet

For those wondering, exactly 1 hour and 52 minutes passed between the time of the two Snoop Dogg tweets in question. That means that the president ― nay, the leader of the free world! ― likely spent almost two hours of his day thinking about the rapper, instead of, say, the millions of people who stand to lose their health care under a newly proposed Republican plan.

What did Snoop Dogg do to warrant such antipathy? He released a music video in which he shoots a prop gun with a flag that says “BANG” at a clown who looks a whole lot like President Trump.

Uh, yeah, believe it or not, that’s it. That’s the whole story, and that’s why the president believes Snoop Dogg might be headed to jail in an alternative world in which the president is still Barack Obama.

This is not the rap beef we want. Is it the rap beef we deserve? No. No one deserves this.

This Eating Disorder Awareness Campaign Takes Down The ‘Before’ Photo

This is how you make a statement.

Recently, some Instagram users took on the “before and after” photos ― the phenomenon where people post images of their bodies from when they were dealing with an eating disorder and then pictures of them after they recovered ― through a hashtag campaign called #BoycottTheBefore. The posts feature a blacked out “before” image as a way to make it clear that appearance comparisons aren’t always reflective of a “healthy” body and mind.

The campaign is meant to address the triggering nature of the photos for those recovering from an eating disorder. It was created by Lexie Louise, A 21-year-old body postivie blogger, in mid-February after analyzing her own personal before-and-after recovery photos. She realized that they could be triggering for others who may also be dealing with an eating disorder or send the wrong message about what the condition actually looks like.

#BoycottTheBefore I have an article that will be published on the sister website of @neda soon that discusses this in more detail. I'll share it when it's posted but wanted to share some now. ((I don't intend to shame anyone who has shared their recovery photos. I'd like to offer different perspectives because it's important to open the conversation rather than assume everyone is on board. I hope those who disagree can speak kindly and non-judgmentally in return.)) For those in early recovery especially, our eating disorders can tempt us to compare numbers or sizes, or even make us question, "Am I sick enough to receive help? Because that person seems to need it more than me". That can be very harmful when it comes to this. These photos also solely show physical growth. It is a huge misconception still that those who have eating disorders must be physically underweight to be considered struggling. It reinforces a misconception that you can see who is struggling. The truth is: we aren't telling the whole story through these photos, even with our captions. There are people in recovery who don't feel comfortable sharing their photos at all. And there are also people in recovery who simply cannot relate to having any shocking physical changes. Overall, though those of us who can share these photos are praised for sharing them and may be creating short term change, we are feeding into the misconceptions of eating disorders and sadly not making room to create real, long term change. So let’s fight back. I encourage you to responsibly share your recovery story this NEDA awareness week if you feel comfortable doing so. I also encourage you to factor in other people – those in recovery and those whom we are trying to educate. And I encourage you to use the photo pictured on the left as your “before” photo if you want to support this project. We are so much more than comparison photos. We are strong, resilient warriors and we will go against the grain and continue to fight to be seen and heard – even if that means not receiving instant validation. Like recovery, change takes time; it is a journey but it is possible.

A post shared by Lexie ✨ (@soworthsaving) on

Posting these comparison photos is enabling the idea that you can see those who have eating disorders,” she wrote in an Instagram caption following deleting the images. “It is also enabling the competition among those struggling with thoughts like, ‘well, I’m not sick enough to get help because I don’t look like that.’”

Since she started the campaign, the hashtag has taken off with more than 1,000 submissions. Model Iskra Lawrence, who has been open about her own recovery from an eating disorder, shared her own boycott photo.

(This post is regarding Eating Disorders & recovery NOT the fitness industry / or weight loss) . Please read before passing judgement as this is NOT me telling you NOT to post before and afters or diminishing the achievements and accomplishments of those who are proud of their journeys. I love seeing people celebrating how far they've come and totally get why (myself included) choose to post before and afters. . But let's open the discussion….. #BoycottTheBefore was started by @soworthsaving and I'm so proud to be part of this movement. . I myself have felt the pressure to post before and after pics to validate that I too suffered… but that's not right. We do not need to prove that we struggled, we do not need to feel like anyone may have struggled more or less because maybe there before and after photos aren't as "dramatic". It's not even about that, it's always about how far you've come so @boycottthebefore is here to celebrate YOU right now! To celebrate how far you've come and maybe how far you still have to go – there is no perfect recovery & everyones is completely unique. . I do however want to say I'm not against posting before and afters, I have done so too and will be keeping them up. However this is also a really great message and I hope to see lots of of you tagging me in your pics (I've shared pics of those who tagged me just swipe to see)… I'm forever inspired by the recovery & bopo communities and I'm grateful for every single person who empowers each other and shares their beautiful unique spark with us all. . Sharing a 'before' (usually dangerously underweight and causes shock and grimace in many) against the 'after' (usually a healthier weight and probably smiling) is something commonly occurring on ED awareness week. This is only showing a physical change and one that feeds into the underweight body stereotype (and for those who have suffered that never have been underweight, where does that leave them?) I'm not going to put a 'before' photograph of myself on that may trigger others or potentially make others feel like their eating disorder is less valid. My own eating disorder would love me to post one, for some means of validation/reassurance and proof to others that 'hey look yes I was dangerously ill and here is your proof now you have to believe me by this to justify whatever belief you have about someone with anorexia' NO. I have nothing to prove to anyone . Trying to spread the word of eating disorders being an internal battle and illness of the mind but posting photographs reinforcing the opposite? It isn't a competition (whatever your eating disorder may say). Telling people how you exercised x amount and weighed xlbs and survived on only x a day does not educate people on this mental illness. I don't want to be reinforcing this stigma that so people are trying so hard to break away from. Boycott the before. #boycottthebefore #nedaweek #eatingdisorderawareness #recovery #mentalhealth #educate #youarenotyourmentalillness

A few weeks ago I quietly started a journey of true body acceptance. I haven't opened up to anyone about it until today. I was tired of being obsessed with a weight loss goal, letting food run my life, and always having what I'm eating or when I will reach my magic weight loss goal number on my mind. It was becoming an obsession, and it had to stop. I went into it with my whole heart. Done weighing myself, but still eating as healthy as I can, working out on a regular basis, and not beating myself up over every cookie that I have. It's been one of the most humbling experiences of my life and I've never felt more confident and beautiful. As a nutrition student the most valuable lesson that I've learned is that we are more than just a number. As long as you live a healthy life overall, that's all that matters. Being skinny does not mean being healthy. Healthy comes in all shapes and sizes! So on this day, you will never see another before and after picture or weight loss post from me. My before is just as wonderful as my after. Also I will never help anyone "lose weight" again. However if you are truly interested in improving your HEALTH and getting HEALTHY, I've got your back! Contact me. Weight loss will probably be a bonus from that, but I will no longer encourage reaching one number, that number does not define who you are. Stay healthy. Stay beautiful. Stay what you are. #boycottthebefore @boycottthebefore #loveyourself #loveyourbody #bodypositive

An estimated 30 million people have an eating disorder in the U.S. Eating disorders have the highest mortality rate of any mental illness group, according to the National Association of Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Disorders.

This staggering fact is further proof that they need to be taken seriously. One way to do that is to increase public awareness, which can send the message that the condition is manageable with treatment. That’s why social media movements like #BoycottTheBefore are so vital: They highlight recovery over everything else.

“I am in recovery. I am living again. I am thriving,” Lousie wrote on Instagram.
“And I don’t have to prove that I was sick by showing you my body.”

Sustainability Set Takes Front Row at Stella McCartney

WHAT’S YOUR CAUSE: François-Henri Pinault, the head of Stella McCartney’s parent company Kering, has frequently stated his commitment to making the fashion business more socially responsible and environmentally sustainable. Sitting front-row at McCartney’s fall show, Pinault wasn’t the only activist on call.
Guest Pamela Anderson is a long-time devotee of McCartney’s animal friendly faux-leather shoes and accessories. “These days I’m just running around trying to save animals and the people I love,” Anderson said at the show.
The former actress has a foundation dedicated to animal rights as well as survivors of sexual violence. In recent months, Anderson has paid a number of visits to Wikileaks founder Julian Assange at the Ecuadorian Embassy in London.
During a visit to France last year, Anderson addressed the nation’s parliament in support of banning the force-feeding of geese to produce foie gras. “This is a national treasure for some reason—but if people knew what these geese suffer, if they saw the videos they couldn’t eat it,” she told WWD.
Arizona Muse said she had ramped up her charitable engagements as well, most recently committing to work with the group Synchronicity Earth. “It’s a charity for women and the environment,” the model said. “I’ve never seen such integrity

Stephen Colbert Takes Aim At Donald Trump’s Nuclear Arsenal Ambitions

Stephen Colbert picked apart President Donald Trump’s desire to ramp up America’s nuclear arsenal on Friday.

The “Late Show” host first poked fun at the way in which the commander in chief said Thursday that he wanted to make the U.S. the “top of the pack” when it came to nukes.

“Not sure if he means top dog or leader of the pack,” quipped Colbert, “but either way, he is not the sharpest knife on the Christmas tree.”

Taking on a more serious tone, Colbert called a new proliferation of nuclear weapons a “terrifying prospect” — coming as it did following years of “careful” decommissioning.

“It’s like the Cold War all over again,” the host said. “But this time everyone’s on Russia’s side.”

Love Takes Action: An Astrological View

For the past two years, my HuffPost blogs have focused on astrology and the myriad ways this ancient art is helpful and meaningful for life today. I was galvanized by HuffPost’s call for articles under the heading #LoveTakesAction. It is an antidote to the swirling hate around us in these fractious and difficult times and I am happy to contribute. Personally, and in my astrology practice, I am encouraging people to focus on what they can do without becoming overwhelmed by the fray, the double talk, and polarization we find all around us.

The first category HuffPost suggested is ways people take action to show and even mobilize love. Each astrological sign takes action in different ways and hewing to your own resonant talents and ability will maximize your effectiveness and keep your energy balanced.

Aries: Leads the campaign and marches. He is a natural warrior for justice.

Taurus: Raises money for organizations that matter and promotes concrete goals towards tolerance and peace.

Gemini: Disseminates real information that encourages people to think and take action.

Cancer: Nurtures those who come across their path whether in a soup kitchen, shelter, or random encounters.

Leo: Dramatizes with very public and heartfelt performances which portray the world you want to live in.

Virgo: Analyzes and categorizes information to discern the actual facts and communicates this information clearly.

2017-02-13-1487000444-7693330-zodiacsigns.jpg

Libra: Engages with tact and diplomacy in relationships, action and dialogue that try to balance love and hate while taking a middle course.

Scorpio: Transforms him or herself with radical, personal actions that serve as a model for passionate tolerance of all the forms love can take.

Sagittarius: Teaches through conversation and ideas that laughter and good humor can overcome obstacles.

Capricorn: Organizes business structures based on responsible solutions and ecological solutions for all people.

Aquarius: Creates a circle of friends and common-minded people who act together on social projects.

Pisces: Works with charitable and religious organizations that reach out with compassion to the neediest.

These suggestions are calls to love action for each sign. I hope they resonate with you and enhance your quest for a more harmonious world.

Alec Baldwin’s Donald Trump Takes His Grievances To ‘The People’s Court’ On ‘SNL’

After a federal appeals court dealt a major blow to President Donald Trump’s controversial travel ban on Thursday, the commander-in-chief angrily tweeted that he would “SEE YOU IN COURT”.

Apparently, he meant it.

On last night’s ‘Saturday Night Live,’ host Alec Baldwin’s version of Trump took the three 9th Circuit Court judges who ruled against his executive order to a different judicial venue: “The People’s Court.”

“Mr. Trump, you understand this is a TV court, right?” asks the judge, played by Cecily Strong. “That’s okay. I’m a TV president,” says the spoofed president.

Baldwin’s Trump demands a reinstatement of his travel ban, and in true TV court style, $ 725 in compensation from the judges who wronged him. He even brings in a star character witness: “Someone who’s known me for years, he’s family, he’s an incredible person with impeccable credentials. Mr. Vladimir Putin.”

A shirtless Putin, played once again by Beck Bennett, has nothing but praise for Trump. “This man is a great friend. He’s my little American Happy Meal. He’d do anything for you. Go against his own country just to make you happy,” explains the fictionalized Russian president.

But even on “The People’s Court”, things don’t turn out well for Trump. And after yet another embarrassing loss, Strong’s judge lays out a sentiment many people these days can relate to: “Let me just say, you’re doing too much. Okay? I want one day without a CNN alert that scares the hell out of me!”

Watch the full sketch above.

Stephen Colbert Takes Down Trump Over Damage Done To America And Hobbits

Just like in “The Hobbit” when Bilbo Baggins returned from his adventures and found his relatives auctioning his possessions, Stephen Colbert was equally surprised at what he found in his first show since the Trump administration.

“You ever regret going on vacation?” said Colbert.

In a lengthy takedown, Colbert assessed all the damage caused by Donald Trump in his first week in office.

“You gotta give the guy credit. He can really get a lot of stuff undone. From Obamacare to climate change to torture, he’s already moved the country back to 2004. If this keeps up, pretty soon I’m gonna launch ‘The Colbert Report,’” said “The Late Show” host.

Colbert also took on the Trump’s executive order severely restricting entry into the U.S. for refugees and travelers from seven Muslim-majority countries, which has led to numerous outrageous incidents, including a 5-year-old Iranian boy being detained and kept from his mother for hours.

“Or as Kellyanne Conway calls it, ‘alternative daycare,’” said Colbert.

The final straw happened when Colbert addressed comments from Steve Bannon, who was placed on the National Security Council.

Bannon described Trump voters as “the working-class hobbits,” and that didn’t sit right with Colbert.

“Hey, now you’ve gone too far. You might be the dark media genius behind the biggest electoral upset in American history, you might be playing footsie with Neo-Nazis, but now we’re talking Tolkien. That’s a subject that I happen to know a little bit about,” said Colbert.

The “Late Show” host proceeded to explain that “there is no working class” in Hobbiton.

“It’s an agrarian society,” he said before explaining that the only working-class citizen in Hobbiton was actually the bad guy, Ted Sandyman.

“When it comes to hobbits, maybe you should shut your mouth and listen for a while,” said Colbert.

All Woman Project’s New Campaign Takes Diversity To The Next Level

Charli Howard and Clementine Desseaux, the model powerhouse duo behind the body-positive All Woman Project, are back and better than ever with a new range of absolutely stunning imagery that proves beauty is not seen in just one size, age or race.

Howard, who was dropped from her modeling agency in 2015, has become a leader in the conversation surrounding inclusivity ever since. She launched the campaign with Desseaux back in September 2016 by way of a diverse, super sexy editorial featuring models of all different shapes, sizes and skin tones.

The second installment of the project teams up with Aerie, a brand known to advocate for inclusivity. Desseaux explained to The Huffington Post that the new series, featuring an even wider range of women, is “a whole new ballgame.”

“We took our imagery to another level and wanted to mix all the codes so they can finally blur and not be limited by what people expect from a body-positive campaign. We included diversity in a whole new way, from milky tones to ebony ones and teenage skins to mature ones. Our team is still all women but those women are real everyday heroes with some amazing stories to tell.”

Howard, Desseaux and Lawrence once again star in the images and are joined by the likes of a surfer, a fitness expert and a professor.

Calling the second installment proof that this is a “more permanent” effort rather than a “trend,” Desseaux also announced that All Woman Project has become a charity so it can “do more than only releasing diverse images. Now, we’re going to go out to schools with some of our team members from both campaigns and make a real change for girls, locally, where it’s the most needed.”

Sounds like there is still so much more to come from this rad, body-positive campaign, and we can’t wait to see what’s next.

Bruce Springsteen Takes Powerful Stance Amid Trump’s Immigration Ban

Bruce Springsteen didn’t shy away from sending a political message at his concert in Adelaide, Australia, on Monday, just days after President Donald Trump unveiled the administration’s controversial immigration ban.

On Friday, Trump announced an executive order barring citizens of seven Muslim-majority nations from entering the United States for three months. The move erupted in protests at airports and elsewhere over the weekend, and not surprisingly, caught the interest of The Boss.

“America is a land of immigrants,” he said during the concert. “This is fundamentally un-American. This is a song about immigrants.” Springsteen then went straight into the song, “American Land,” with the crowd exploding in cheers, according to Australia’s Herald Sun.

The song features the lyrics:

I docked at Ellis Island in the city of light and spire
I wandered to the valley of red-hot steel and fire
We made the steel that built the cities with the sweat of our two hands
We made our home in the American land

That wasn’t the only political mention of the night. While singing “Land of Hope and Dreams,” Springsteen changed the lyrics to include: “This train carries immigrants.”

The New Jersey rocker’s latest comments come on the heels of remarks he made about the Women’s March on Washington at another concert in Australia.

His words also came at the same time as the SAG Awards, where many celebrities spoke up about the ban both on the red carpet and in speeches.

Alec Baldwin’s Trump Takes On Obamacare And Golden Showers On ‘SNL’

Alec Baldwin stepped into Donald Trump’s shoes again for “Saturday Night Live” to present his own version of the president-elect’s recent press conference and talk about inauguration entertainment, golden showers and his sons, “Beavis” and “Butthead.”

Baldwin as Trump begins in the cold open with a serious warning: “Let me answer the question that’s on everyone’s mind: Yes this is real life, this is really happening. On January 20th, I, Donald J. Trump will become the 45th president of the United States. Then two months later Mike Pence will become the 46th.”

He says he’s excited to move into the White House, and will even have a “little” pet: Paul Ryan.

“Who is excited for my Inauguration Day?” he asks. “We have got some of the biggest performers in the world lined up. Hold on to your tits and bits, because we have got Three Doors Down, Jackie What’s-her-face from “America’s Got Talent” and the one Rockette with the least money in her savings.” He also touts “huge A-List actors coming, like Angelina Jolie, Ryan Gosling and Jennifer Lawrence … courtesy of Madame Tussauds” waxworks.

He then takes questions from “reporters,” but refuses to answer any “pee pee party” questions, referring to an unsubstantiated report of a “golden shower” sex fete in Russia, saying: “It didn’t happen and It wasn’t as cool as it sounds.” But he can’t quite steer away from golden shower images as he talks about his plan to bring a “thick stream of jobs” to the country. “This country will literally be showered with jobs. Because I’m a major wiz at jobs,” he gushes.

When a reporter tells him people “could die” if he eliminates Obamacare without a replacement, leaving 20 million people without health insurance, Baldwin’s Trump answers: “Listen, sweetheart, I’m about to be president. We’re all going to die.”

He also announces that he has “turned over all my business to my two sons, Beavis and Butthead.” Gesturing to SNL cast members Mikey Day and Alex Moffat, playing Donald Jr. and Eric, Baldwin adds: “Look at those two little American psychos.” He refuses to take a question from a reporter from the “failing pile of garbage” BuzzFeed or from “over-rated fake news” CNN, though insists repeatedly: “I respect the press.”

The last question comes from shirtless Vladimir Putin look-alike Beck Bennett (claiming to be Wolf Blitzer) who asks Trump if he’s “very very sure” Russia hacked the American presidential election, while he holds up a small video labeled “pee pee tape.”

“It was China,” Baldwin responds. “No, it was Canada. OK, It was Meryl Streep.” He wraps it up with the sendoff: “Thanks for peeing here.”

Before the Trump skewering, “SNL” re-aired a 1978 episode featuring Carrie Fisher not long after she rocked the first “Star Wars” movie as Princess Leia. She opened the show dressed as Leia. Musical guests were the Blues Brothers: Dan Aykroyd and the late great John Belushi.

Saturday night’s episode was hosted by “Rogue One” actress Felicity Jones, who was joined in the opening monologue by an ersatz “hologram” of Tina Fey as Princess Leia. Fey warned Jones: “No matter how the show goes, the president of the United States will say that it’s sad and overrated,” adding: “It’s fine, no one cares.”

Dazzling German concert hall takes its bow

Billed as a cultural monument ready to rival the Sydney Opera House, Hamburg's Elbphilharmonie came in six years overdueGermany premiered a spectacular new concert house Wednesday in the northern city of Hamburg, billed as a future national landmark and global attraction, albeit after a cost explosion. Chancellor Angela Merkel and President Joachim Gauck were among 2,100 guests invited to the inaugural evening concert under tight security at the grand hall of the Elbphilharmonie, which has electrified critics with its audacious design and world-class acoustics. At a pre-opening news conference, Hamburg Mayor Olaf Scholz defended the project, saying that its sold-out concert schedule through July and the more than 500,000 visitors who have already flocked to the building proved the Elbphilharmonie was winning hearts.

Bernie Sanders’ New Book Takes Corporate Media To Task

During a rousing speech delivered to supporters in New York City Tuesday night, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) had a few words for the media establishment.

“Over 90 percent of media coverage [during the 2016 presidential race] was not about the issues that impact your lives,” he said, citing “a variety of studies.”

Instead, he continued, the stories “were about Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton. They were about political gossip. They were about polls. They were about fundraising. They were about stupid things that people said 20 years ago. What we must demand of a media is that they start covering the issues that impact our lives. Not just the candidates’ lives.”

Sanders was in town to promote his new book, Our Revolution, named for the political action group that grew out of the senator’s progressive platform. Speaking to a crowd of seated audience members in Manhattan’s Cooper Union, he took what he called “corporate media” to task for its failure to cover the 2016 presidential campaign season in “a serious way.” During the speech, Sanders echoed sentiments outlined in the last chapter of his book, a section titled “Corporate Media and the Threat to Our Democracy.”

“If media does not accept its responsibility to talk about the reality facing the American people […] that is a real threat to the future of American democracy,” he told his supporters Tuesday night.

Mr. Trump does not have a mandate to carry out his extremist ideas and we should not forget that for a second.
Senator Bernie Sanders

In his book, published on Nov. 15 by Thomas Dunne Books, he cites an early experience with “the nature of the media’s political coverage,” recounting the time Vermont news outlets focused their attention on a candidate for state representative who skied around the state to meet voters, downplaying the actual issues affecting voters. “If corporate media won’t change,” Sanders writes in the final pages of his book, “start new media.”

The issues that impact our lives, Sanders reiterated throughout his hourlong talk, include access to healthcare and higher education, the disappearance of the middle class, criminal justice reform, immigration reform, and climate change. He urged his followers to pay attention to these concerns, going so far as to point out three subjects on which American citizens should refuse to compromise: bigotry, democracy and climate change.

Sanders was introduced on Tuesday night by the actor and activist Harry Belafonte, who described the election of Donald Trump as “weird.” Belafonte was in turn introduced by Strand Bookstore owner Nancy Bass Wyden, who praised Sanders’ “action-oriented ideas for progressives who want to reclaim power in America.” Strand hosted the event at Cooper Union.

The Huffington Post streamed the entire speech live on Facebook Tuesday night. You can read more excerpts from Sanders’ talk, below.

On Donald Trump:

“In terms of the popular vote, Mr. Trump lost that to Secretary Clinton by almost three million votes. […] Mr. Trump does not have a mandate to carry out his extremist ideas and we should not forget that for a second.”

On the progressive agenda:

“On virtually every major issue impacting the American people, it turns out that a significant majority of the American people support the progressive agenda. I want all of you to know […] that you’re not heroes and heroines fighting some great uphill struggle out on the vanguard. What your views are, by and large, represent where the American people are on issue after issue.”

On voter suppression:

“What you have in Republican states all over this country is you have Republican governors who are too cowardly to participate in free and fair and open elections. They are working overtime to deny poor people, old people, young people, people of color the right to vote. Massive levels of voter suppression.”

On Trump’s cabinet nominations:

“Mr. Trump nominated for Secretary of State the head of ExxonMobil. He appointed or nominated as head of the Environmental Protection Agency someone who does not even believe in the reality of climate change. And on this issue, as on many other issues, what we have got to do as a nation is […] we have got to bring millions and millions of people together to tell Mr. Trump that we’re not going back to bigotry, that we’re going to protect American democracy, and that we are going to transform our energy system, whether ExxonMobil likes it or not.”

On why Hillary Clinton and Democratic congressmen lost:

“There are a lot of reasons why, but I’ll tell you what I think a key reason is ― is that the Democrats failed to understand that, while it is true, absolutely, that we are better off today economically than we were eight years ago when Bush left office, no debate about that, there’s another truth. And that truth is that there are millions and millions of people, often in rural areas, in inner cities, who are hurting today very, very badly. They are in real pain. This is a pain that you don’t see on television. […] The word poverty comes out of the mouths of very few elected officials.”

On the future of the Democratic Party:

“I think we need a fundamental transformation of the Democratic Party. I am not here tonight to, you know, knock people […] but I think it is very clear that the current approach ― the current way the Democratic Party has done business simply has failed and we need a very new direction.”

Adiff Founder Takes Her Designs to Refugees in Six Camps in Greece

Adiff founder Angela Luna recently returned from asking refugees in six camps in Greece to critique her protective, multipurpose designs.
Working with the nonprofit Carry the Future, which hand-delivers child carriers and baby boxes to refugee families, Luna visited about six refugee camps in Greece. Each varied in size from about 80 people to a few thousand, depending on the set up. In some locations, there were acres of land covered with tents that 10 people would huddle in. In another, there was an apartment building with 10 rooms, housing 10 people in each room.
Referring to Eftalou, an area known for mountains of life jackets, Luna said, “I thought I had an idea of what it would be like. It’s one thing to see the images on your computer and it’s another thing to stand there — the same thing for the camps. You can read interviews with refugees online or watch a documentary, but it’s a completely different thing and you’re able to physically and emotionally connect on a human level,” she said. “My main thing was I don’t understand how people can be afraid of refugees. The kids I was playing games with were exactly like the pre-schoolers I

Michael Bublé Takes A Break From Singing After Son’s Cancer Diagnosis

Just one week after Michael Bublé and wife Luisana Lopilato announced that their 3-year-old son, Noah, has cancer, Bublé’s friend and mentor David Foster gave an update on how the singer is coping.

“I think Michael, right now, is in a huge bubble, as you would expect when this happens. Everything shuts down around you,” the composer told Entertainment Tonight Canada, later adding that Bublé “will not sing again until his child is well.”

“I’m certain of it,” he said.

Many fans have reached out to the singer through social media, and Foster said that a few have contacted him wishing to extend their well-wishes and resources to Bublé. Though the diagnosis is heartbreaking, Bublé is “in good shape.”

“He’s got good doctors around him. We will hope and pray for a good outcome, which I believe that they will have,” Foster said, suggesting his fellow Canadian’s “good karma” will come into play.

Why Your Prescription Takes So Damn Long To Fill: A Foul-Mouthed, Liberal Pharmacist Breaks The Curse Of Christmas And Strikes Back Against

…. I call your doctors office and am put on hold for 5 minutes, then informed that your prescription was phoned in to my competitor on the other side of town. Phoning the competitor, I am immediately put on hold for 5 minutes before speaking to a clerk, who puts me back on hold to wait for the pharmacist. Your prescription is then transferred to me, and now I have to get the 2 phone calls that have been put on hold while this was being done. Now I return to the counter to ask if we’ve ever filled prescriptions for you before. For some reason, you think that “for you” means “for your cousin” and you answer my question with a “yes”, whereupon I go the computer and see you are not on file. The phone rings…” That’s part of the reason why your prescription takes so long to fill, and after almost 20 years of this, a question I was never quite able to answer loomed larger and larger each day: “Why did I get into this profession?” Cranky customers whose only questions seem to involve their insurance co-pays. Pointless paperwork. People begging for early narcotic refills. Staff cuts. That was my workday. The struggle to get people the medicine and information they needed seemed almost futile at times. Then one day I got the answer. It hit me like a ton of bricks while driving home one spring evening along the California coast. I was born again, but it had nothing to do with Jesus. It did have a lot to do with a little plastic motorcycle. And I did become

MILAN — OTB has taken full control of Marni, three years after acquiring a 61 percent stake in the Italian fashion company.
The firms described the transaction as “the natural completion” of a path initiated with the purchase of the majority stake. Consuelo Castiglioni remains creative director of Marni and her husband Gianni Castiglioni president of the group. Ubaldo Minelli, chief executive officer of Staff International, has been appointed ceo of Marni, a role previously held by Gianni Castiglioni. Minelli will continue to also helm Staff International.
“Marni represents a fundamental pillar of our group,” said OTB president Renzo Rosso. “It is a brand that fully reflects our vision of alternative luxury, with a unique creativity and an incredible potential for further development.”

Blogger Takes Off Her Makeup To Reveal The Ugly Truth About Online Harassment

You look disgusting.

That’s the title of beauty blogger Em Ford’s latest YouTube video, a three-minute feature that’s about far more than lipstick and mascara.

Ford, a 20-something from London who suffers from adult acne, has been posting photos of herself without makeup for the past three months. In the video, she washes off her makeup to highlight the disturbing online harassment she faces. She includes a smattering of the horrible comments she receives on social media daily, like “ugly,” “revolting,” and “I can’t even look at her.”

She decided to share the video in an attempt to challenge societal preconceptions of beauty.

“Over the past few months, I’ve received thousands of messages from people all over the world who suffer or have suffered from acne, an insecurity or self confidence issues,” she wrote on her blog, My Pale Skin. “I wanted to create a film that showed how social media can set unrealistic expectations on both women and men. One challenge many face today, is that as a society, we’re so used to seeing false images of perfection, and comparing ourselves to unrealistic beauty standards that It can be hard to remember the most important thing — You ARE beautiful.”

The video has racked up over 400,000 views since it was posted on Wednesday.

Cat Takes Accidental Ride On An Airplane (VIDEO)

Meow ready for takeoff.

A cat finds itself on the flight of her life as she clings to the wing of a plane flying over Kourou, French Guiana.

In a video posted on Sunday to YouTube, the pilot, Romain Jantot, and his passenger, don’t notice the cat at first. Then, as she crawls toward them, they realize they’ve taken on an unwanted passenger.

Jantot immediately starts his descent after spotting the feline stowaway and safely lands the plane.

“A standard flight until … I still don’t know if it got in after the pre-flight check or if I missed it,” the video description says. “The cat is doing well, she is still our mascot.”

Sometimes viral video clips turn out to be fakes. But Arizona pilot Stephen Bass told The Huffington Post he thinks this one’s legit.

Bass is the president of the nonprofit Copperstate Fly-In and has more than 500 hours of flying experience, including on light sport aircraft, like the kind shown in the video.

“There’s fabric on the top and the bottom of the wing and space in between,” Bass said. “You see it crawling out from the center of the wing, where it was protected. I think it’s real.”

Jantot did not immediately return a request for comment from The Huffington Post.

Larry Wilmore Takes Fox News To Task Over Charleston Church Shooting Coverage

Larry Wilmore isn’t too pleased with Fox News’ coverage of the church massacre in Charleston, South Carolina. Then again, this shouldn’t come as a surprise.

This time, the late night talk show host, who initially declared he wouldn’t discuss the shooting on his comedy-based platform, later changed his mind and shared choice words about the network.

“I know we talk about race a lot on this show, but I think we can all agree this time that this is a racially motivated attack,” he said. “It couldn’t be clearer when it comes out of the killer’s mouth. But even with all of that evidence, on a day like today, Fox News just makes my f***king head explode.”

The host then played a series of clips from Fox News’ coverage which questioned whether Roof’s motives were targeted towards black people or Christians.

“I know you guys don’t want to admit that racial stuff isn’t going on, but how can there be any doubt when it came out of the gunman’s mouth? He told his victims, ‘I want to shoot black people,’” Wilmore said. “I think when he says black people, he means black people – and not Christians.”

Wilmore also highlighted presidential candidate Rick Santorum calling the shooting an “assault on religious liberty” and Santorum’s confusion of the shooter’s motives other than it being a “crime of hate.” The comedian-writer cited the 1963 bombing of the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama as one similarly horrific incident that didn’t require anyone to wonder the killers’ intent.

“Let me give you an example,” Wilmore explained. “Four black girls were murdered in a church bombing in Birmingham, Alabama, in 1963. Back then, no one pretended to wonder what the motivation was. If you tried to say it was about religion, even the perpetrators back then would have corrected you.”

Check out more of Larry Wilmore’s thoughts in the clip above.

“It Takes A Man To Teach A Boy To Be A Man”

I’d like to say it was at a younger age when I really appreciated my father. But sadly, it really didn’t occur until college. Because that’s when I found out how much he means to me.

And no, I don’t mean being all alone in a dorm. I had a roommate, and friends. I had a good job, lots of work and fun, and even met my future wife there. It was a school very much like LaGrange College in fact, with lots of good professors, small classes, and plenty of scholarship, service and social occasions to make memories to last a lifetime, and started me on a great career with a top internship. In fact, college was, for the most part, a pretty wonderful existence.

That didn’t mean I didn’t miss him. I wasn’t great at writing letters (the occasional postcard had to suffice), but he did write me. I have to admit, handwriting wasn’t his strength. After all, he was a doctor, and I am sure all of the nurses and secretaries in town are adding a knowing smile, as there is some truth to this myth. But it was enough to know he did write. And I called once a week, a tradition I continue today. Nowadays, I write at least once a month.

2015-06-20-1434839832-8805965-Pic54.jpg
My dad, my mom, and our kids enjoy Rock City on the Tennessee-Georgia border off Lookout Mountain
.

But I realized how important it was to have a dad when so many other kids in college didn’t have one. One friend lost his to a heart attack. Another had his father tell him, to his face, that he didn’t want him or his mother. There stories of divorce and a lack of caring. My wife’s father suffered from alcoholism and also divorced his wife less than a month before we were married.

Dr. Quincy Brown, Associate Pastor for Serve Ministries Peachtree City UMC emailed me a great Father’s Day sermon titled “Growing Pains,” discussing an episode from that TV show involving an absentee father, and the pain inflicted on the son, played by Leonardo DiCaprio. Dr. Brown related a recent tale about a barbershop conversation, when he said “It takes a man to teach a boy to be a man,” which was supported by fathers and mothers in attendance.

“I went on further to explain that in my experience, no mother or any other woman can ever make a boy or a man love himself as a man. An attractive woman might make him feel terrific for the moment, but she still can’t make him feel loved deep down inside or feel that he is a man, no matter how attractive she might be. A man may even be “love struck” when he meets a beautiful woman and may even want to marry her. If he does, he may be in for a rude awakening, because when the passion cools down he’ll be faced with the pain and reality of his own loneliness and emptiness that festers from his unhealed father wound.

And then to avoid facing his pain, he’ll look to another performance, climb another mountain, or seek another beautiful woman…and another…in attempts to prove to himself that he is a man. Or he may try to deaden the pain through alcohol, drugs or addictive behaviors which can eventually ruin his health, get cancer, die of a heart attack, and never get close to the ones he loves, or ruin those relationships. That is, he’ll keep “acting out” until he faces why he looks in the wrong places for the love he never received as a child.

Expressed in each young man in the barbershop story of abandonment from their fathers is that every man craves deep, intimate connections with other men. But unfortunately, men are often left without the tools for creating these loving, nurturing relationships. A big reason for this has to do with the primary role fathers typically play in families. Rather than nurturing their sons or developing intimacy with them, fathers often spend the majority of their time enforcing the rules.

The absentee-show-up-as-you-please, stoic, and unemotional approaches to life are often accompanied by a seemingly unreachable set of expectations from fathers. Countless men all secretly carry around with them stories of fathers that they could not please: “All my life I have felt as if I just couldn’t cut it in my father’s eyes. It always seemed like the bar was raised just above my reach.”

Because so many boys do not have a father affirming their “leap into manhood,” that transition is often filled with feelings of fear, anger and frustration, instead of confidence and security. Lonely and discouraged boys become isolated and alienated men. In this isolated state, men continue to desire closeness and connection, but they often have no concept of how to achieve it.”

I found that I could handle all kinds of challenges in life, from college, to the corporate world, to building a relationship with a wonderful person, to creating a great pair of kids. I have all kinds of tools that I can call upon in these situations, from both parents. Whether it is a work ethic, a fun-time activity to share, all kinds of knowledge, how to love another, and respect for the Almighty, they set me on a path that was very different from some friends. Standardized tests will reveal I’m not always the sharpest tool in the shed, but I had great parental teachers in all things that helped me make up the difference.

Even if you don’t want to leave your present job you can still make hundreds of dollars on some weekends with your camera and your skills. There are plenty of opportunities for anyone who has adequate equipment and the skills needed to take pro-level photos. This is a quick read that cuts to the chase. Smiling Kodiak Takes a Cruise

There’s much to be said for cruising, not that Smiling Kodiak has ever said any of it. To see the Greek Islands in a short time, he discovers having a boat helps. As an American, Smiling Kodiak knows how to squeeze too much into a short vacation. A Mediterranean cruise is a marvel of efficiency, like having a mobile floating second-rate Las Vegas casino hotel magically deliver you to a new world every morning. The disadvantage is that you wake up in a mobile floating second-rate Las Vegas casino hotel. In Smiling Kodiak Takes a Cruise, Smiling Kodiak leaves his Australian home to experience the wonders of the Middle East, Rome, the Greek Islands, and Turkey – with 3,500 other passengers expecting the time of their lives. As with casinos, there will be more losers than winners. Smiling Kodiak Takes a Cruise is no guidebook. It provides insights and anecdotes that you may find hilarious, shocking, offensive, poignant, bizarre – perhaps all of the above. But travel isn’t about where you go or how you get there, it’s about what unfolds.

What Takes You Out?

We are all subject to experiences or interactions with people that shift our energy. Maybe you felt confident before you had that conversation with your boss and now you feel uneasy or unsure or low. Maybe you felt pretty good about yourself before you went to the dinner party, but the comment by an acquaintance made you feel sloppy or unattractive. Maybe you had an “I can do it!” attitude before you started putting together that piece of assemble-it-yourself furniture, but now, several hours in, you want to collapse in a puddle of sweat and tears on your living room floor.

Have you ever stopped to think about what really takes you out? Meaning, what are those experiences that repeatedly cause a shift in your energy? What are the situations that cause you to feel depleted, or angry or hopeless? Of course there are some totally novel situations, things that you haven’t engaged in multiple times, and you rightfully can’t predict the effect of those on your state of being. But, there are other instances that are relatively predictable — tasks you need to do on a regular basis or people you know you will interact with over and over again — that you can, with some degree of certainty, know will affect you in a certain way.

I have health insurance through a provider that shall remain nameless. I can’t count the number of times they have made huge billing, claims or coverage mistakes. I would estimate this happens about once a month, no exaggeration. Which means, that at least once a month, some issue has to be addressed, by the insured. Me. Which means I have to call someone at this insurance company. Some of these people are really pleasant and easy to deal with. And sometimes they are pleasant, but don’t know how to help me. And sometimes they are not pleasant at all. I spend about an hour on the phone with them, on average, sorting out some mistake. About a month ago, I was on the phone with a particularly rude and unhelpful agent and the sweet billing person at my doctor’s office. The call took 90 minutes. I hung up the phone and my tired, pregnant, hormonal self was done for the day. No energy. No drive. All I could do was lay on the living room couch. I had other things I wanted to do, but they immediately became unfeasible for me after this call.

My husband, Mike, uses a recording program on his computer, quite frequently. A major frustration he has is that every time he opens the program, intending to do something he’s done dozens of times before, the software has been updated in some way since the last time he used it. Basically, what this does is causes long-time veteran users to spend way more time than they budgeted for figuring out the new way of accomplishing the task they wanted to complete. Mike’s reaction is equally predictable. He gets frustrated, then angry. He feels like he wants to punch a wall.

The good news about both of these situations is that while the need to accomplish these tasks is somewhat fixed, so is the predictability of each of our reactions. In other words, I have ended up depleted and Mike has ended up angry so many times after the same type of experience with either my insurance company or the recording program, that we can pretty much assume what is likely to happen to our state of being as a result of either being on the phone or working in the software.

This is good news because when something is relatively predictable, there are things you can do to empower yourself around your own reaction and your own energy. The simplest one that I’ve found is to take a little bit of time to prepare before you dive into an activity or an interaction that you can reasonably assume could “take you out.”

How do you prepare? There are a couple things I’ve tried that have proven really useful. One protects your energy. The other is a “priming” technique.

1. To protect your energy, you can take a few minutes to close your eyes and breathe deeply. Three deep breaths is adequate. Ten deep breaths is even better. Either way, you’ll activate your parasympathetic nervous system, which will put you in a relaxed and calm state. You can even try “self-caressing,” which amazingly enough, helps activate the hormone oxytocin in your body, responsible for reducing fear and anxiety. With your eyes closed in this relaxed state, you can imagine that there is white light protecting you from any negative experience or interaction, and this white light wraps around you like a protective bubble or perhaps even “mummifies” you, wrapping you up from head to toe in several layers of protection. Take a few minutes to get into this state and proceed with your task.

2. The second strategy which you can do instead of, or in addition to the one above is to prime yourself to have a different kind of experience than the one you usually have. When you engage in priming, you are essentially programming your subconscious ahead of time to have a particular response to a certain stimulus. So, you can pre-program yourself to feel differently about the familiar (and potentially depleting or negative) stimulus and you can also prime your subconscious for the whole experience to be different (both the stimulus and your reaction). For me, that means I tell myself before I dial the insurance company’s phone number something that approximates the following: “This call will be easy. I will speak with a helpful and friendly agent. The call will be brief and efficient. The person on the other end will solve my problem and I will feel refreshed and ready to take on the rest of my day when I hang up.” The last time I called my insurance company, this was EXACTLY what happened. Coincidence? Perhaps. But, I also primed myself for this to happen. Even if it hadn’t happened exactly as I imagined, I had already dealt with my energy before the call so that I could create a different outcome from the one that I was used to having.

You can do this with any situation — predictable or unpredictable, but it’s especially fun to see what happens with situations where you are used to things going a certain way. Choose to not get taken out.

‘According To My Mother’ Takes A Comedic Look At LGBT Acceptance And Cultural Differences

Like a lot of queer people, Daniel K. Isaac has a complicated relationship with his mother, Esther.

Esther is a devoutly religious Korean-American who doesn’t approve of her son’s sexuality — and she isn’t shy about telling him so. For a long time, Isaac grappled with how to deal with his mother’s disapproval and constant comments about his sexuality. But then friends made him realize something powerful — the way his mother communicated her feelings about his life and sexuality are actually hilarious.

Like…

daniel

And…

daniel

They’re so funny, in fact, that Daniel created a hashtag, #AccordingToMyMother, which became a viral Internet sensation. This happened not only because of the comedic nature of their communication, but because of the visible exploration of the love between a mother and child, despite the way that cultural and religious differences can serve as a wedge in their relationships.

Now, Isaac plans to turn the #AccordingToMyMother sensation into a film, funded through a Kickstarter campaign. While his mother is embarrassed by the online attention she has received, especially with her living in California and Daniel in New York, she is fully supportive of the film and embraces the idea that art can be therapeutic.

The Huffington Post spoke with Isaac this week about why he decided to start sharing his relationship with his mom with the public, and what he hopes can be achieved achieve through this film.

isaac

The Huffington Post: What made you want to start sharing your mom’s quotes?
Daniel K. Isaac: Living on opposite sides of the country, the main form of communication my mom and I have is by phone. In order to limit the duration of these conversations, I often call my mom on my way to something: the subway station, work, rehearsal, or home. On many occasions, I would arrive at a destination while finishing up a call in front of my friends or castmates or coworkers and they would ask why I was in whatever emotional state my mother had put me in. I would recount the conversation, and rather than finding empathy or compassion for my plight, I would be met with laughter or utter shock and disbelief. It took an outsider’s perspective for me to realize how ridiculous or absurd and downright comical my mom sounded. When I learned to observe the hilarity rather than the negative arguments themselves, I didn’t mind calling my mom as much. In fact, I looked forward to it. I realized maybe other people would enjoy hearing about this too and see how a different perspective can radically change a relationship dynamic. So I took to Facebook and received more “likes” on those snippets of conversations than I ever did on a new profile picture. And that led to a Tumblr and an Instagram account and now a movie!

isaac

HP: What has the reaction been like?
I can no longer have a “mom-free” conversation. Instead of being introduced as Daniel the actor, I now hear, “You should add Daniel as a Facebook friend so you can read more about his mom.” People I haven’t spoken to in years will share embarrassing and intimate details about their family and their parental relationships or how they have been meaning to start their own hashtag or blog for “According To My Southern Mother” or “Sh*t My German Mom Says.”

I have a handful of friends and old acquaintances who are reticent to express their support. I’ve been told #accordingtomymother is improper. Or I am airing my dirty laundry. Or disrespecting my elders. Or dishonoring a familial bond or parent-child confidentiality (is that a thing?). I counter these points with stories about friends/acquaintances/strangers who tell me about their idiosyncratic families, who share potentially traumatic anecdotes for the first time, who are given permission and a platform to express their personal experiences and how they empathize with their own family backgrounds. And that makes it worth it — to at least help start the conversation.

daniel

What do you think your relationship with your mom can show us about understanding and love between people who maybe don’t see eye to eye?
When my mom disowned me for being gay, it was my freshman year of college. I remember going to the Financial Aid Office to consider my options as a suddenly-and-unexpectedly financially-independent 16-year-old, and they had me fill out some surprisingly simple paperwork and register for ten sessions of therapy. The therapist I was assigned ended up being the best thing to come from the Financial Aid Office — of all places! He really helped me find a new way to approach my relationship with my mother.

He said I could be “White,” “Black” or “Gray.” “White” meant I could go back in the closet as my mom hoped and prayed and return to the church and fight this “sin” and have the old relationship I had with my mother. “Black” meant resuming our silence, letting the rift grow larger and learning to live without a relationship with my mother because neither of us was going to change. I was always going to be gay. She was always going to believe that homosexuality was a choice and a sin. Or I could try to find the “Gray.” He highlighted the fact that my mother was a single parent and I was an only child and that our relationship, while incredibly messy, was important to each of us. And perhaps we could find a gray area in which I would accept the likelihood that she was never going to change her belief system, but I would learn to have compassion in the face of her homophobia, or ignore her ignorance, and let her words that were meant to hurt just go through one ear and out the other. Love by example, even when it may never be reciprocated in the same fashion. Am I always successful at this? No. I mean, I find a weird form of catharsis by writing about it and sharing it with the world. But I think the intention is pure. And maybe if we found the gray area in our extreme points of view a little bit more, then maybe we could have a little more understanding in the world. A little more love.

What’s the one thing you want people to take away from your experience?
I think by writing #accordingtomymother, I’ve learned the importance of trying to find laughter and comedy when there’s seemingly none to be found. I think humor is part of my healing and coping process and I hope to be able to share that with these posts and with this movie. I hope that, past the hilarity and the absurdity of it all, you can see one guy’s “resilience,” which sounds like too strong a word, but basically this is how I work with the cards I’ve been dealt and maybe that can help someone else through their own journey.

Oh, and, call your mom.

Annaleigh Ashford Takes ‘Lost In The Stars,’ Her Glitzy Solo Cabaret, On The Road

Annaleigh Ashford is honored when friends and fans sum up her new cabaret act, “Lost in the Stars,” as “gay magic.”

“There are certain performers that the gay community receives and recognizes with love, and my whole life, I’ve always responded to those same artists,” the 29-year-old singer-actress told The Huffington Post in an interview. She pointed out that the first venue she ever performed in was Denver’s Theatre on Broadway, which was known for its queer-inclusive shows: “I’ve always felt very attuned to, and at home in, the gay community.”

There’s a sassy sensibility in the retro glamour of “Lost in the Stars,” which Ashford is taking on the road with her band, The Whiskey 5, after a string of acclaimed performances at New York’s 54 Below. The star, best known for her Tony-nominated stint in Broadway’s “Kinky Boots” and her portrayal of lesbian prostitute Betty on Showtime’s “Masters of Sex,” is promising audiences in Chicago, Denver, San Francisco and Las Vegas plenty of sequins, sky-high wigs and classic disco.

Of course, Ashford doesn’t limit her material to the late ’70s or, more specifically, the confines of Studio 54. She and musical director Will Van Dyke have crafted an eclectic set including songs by Stephen Sondheim, Elton John, Cyndi Lauper and Alanis Morrisette that they hope will have universal appeal. One highlight is a medley that offers vestiges of Ashford’s musical theater roles, including “Hair,” “Rent,” “Wicked,” “Legally Blonde” and, of course, “Kinky Boots.”

Annaleigh Ashford poses backstage at New York’s 54 Below.

annaleigh ashford

Although her career has taken her down a more thespian path, Ashford sees “Lost in the Stars” as fulfilling her childhood dream of becoming a bonafide cabaret star on the road. Each city on the tour, she says, has special resonance. She was born in Denver, while her husband, actor Joe Tapper, hails from outside Chicago. Meanwhile, she played San Francisco as part of the out-of-town tryout for “Legally Blonde,” and participated in dance competitions in Las Vegas each as an adolescent.

“I grew up listening to cabaret. At 7 and 8 years old, I was already singing like a club performer,” Ashford, who cites “Patti LuPone at Les Mouches” and Ann Hampton Callaway and Liz Callaway’s “Sibling Rivalry” as influences, explained. “One of our goals is to bring this art form to a younger audience. I think our generation isn’t as versed on cabaret [as previous generations were], so I think it’s important to expose younger audiences to the art form.”

She and Van Dyke said they aim to keep the show as organic as possible by refreshing or swapping out musical numbers in each new city and “playing a bit off the cuff” throughout.

“She just flies off the handle sometimes, and it’s amazing,” Van Dyke said. “It’s just so fun to be on that ride.”

Ashford would ultimately like to expand the show into a full-scale production of “song, dance and epic storytelling” in the vein of Liza Minnelli’s famed “Liza with a ‘Z’” act. In the meantime, she and Van Dyke plan to produce an album that compiles the best of their live performances on the tour, which they’d like to release this fall.

She also hopes that “Lost in the Stars” will be the first of many cabaret acts, noting that she’s currently listening to a lot of New Orleans jazz, Janet Jackson and ’80s era Bonnie Raitt.

“My ambition for the piece is that you walk out the door with your heart having been touched by at least one song,” she said. “I think that intention has carried us through.”

Annaleigh Ashford and The Whiskey 5 will perform “Lost in the Stars” at Chicago’s Broadway Playhouse on March 21. She plays the Denver Center for the Performing Arts on April 11-12, San Francisco’s Venetian Room April 19 and the Smith Center for the Performing Arts in Las Vegas on June 27-28.

Rosie O’Donnell Takes on Brian Williams at the Athena Film Festival

The irrepressible Rosie O’Donnell could not help herself. Coaxed to do stand up on the not funny subject of her heart attack by HBO’s Sheila Nevins, the television star created a routine that is more than the heartfelt in its title, “Rosie O’Donnell: A Heartfelt Standup,” it’s a PSA for women, a wake-up call to the astonishing fact that the leading killer of women is not breast or ovarian cancer, but heart disease. After a special screening at the Athena Film Festival, a panel of doctors weighed in on heart health for women offering tips for prevention. O’Donnell created a mantra for detection, HEPPP: Hot, exhausted, pain, pale, puke, which she made into an infectious ditty. When someone in the audience told her own heart story, O’Donnell strained to find a place for H, an added symptom of heartburn.

Rosie being Rosie, she could not help herself. Topical, she took swipes as Brian Williams. “Oh yeah, and I wrote and directed A League of their Own. Oops, I forgot, I only acted in that movie,” she quipped. Though she says she is leaving The View because of her health, Rosie seems in top form, casting a roving eye on the young women filmmakers in the crowd. “Ooh, did you feel something? I felt it. You may be my next wife.”

Proof Positive That It Takes Great Vendor Relationships to Avoid Wedding Disasters

You can be the best wedding planner in the world, or the most effective and organized Do-It-Yourself bride and groom in the world, but if you don’t have good relationships with your vendors, you’re going to have problems pulling off a flawless wedding.

Let me be clear – no wedding is perfect. There are ALWAYS problems. But most of the time, the things that go wrong behind-the-scenes can be fixed before my clients even know about it. That’s the critical time when it’s up to the planner and the vendor to work together in a perfect duet in order to create things that don’t exist and make other things appear out of thin air. Without a TEAM of people working together to make sure an event comes together and runs smoothly, you’re looking at a potential nightmare.

However, if you have good vendor relationships, almost any problem can be solved. And as a planner, I can promise you that one of your vendors will save your butt in a big way – whether you’re a professional planner or it’s your own wedding. That’s the number one reason to spent time vetting and selecting the very best vendors.

But remember, you don’t build relationships with vendors overnight. And if you’ve been rude or nasty or dismissive of your vendor’s concerns prior to the wedding, it’s tough for them to be the best troubleshooters they can be when you call in a panic at the 11th hour. Treat them with professionalism and respect from the very beginning.

Last week, my company planned a fabulous wedding for a Broadway actress and her Dutch businessman fiancé on Vieques Island. They were fun to plan with, but the bride had a very specific vision in her head of what her wedding would look like – most especially the flowers. Her bouquet, in particular. As the planner, I had it all under control – at least the parts I could control. Being located on a small island located off the coast of Puerto Rico, sometimes there are a few things out of our control. Most commonly, the flowers.

I became a florist under duress. I had opened Weddings in Vieques on the tiny island off the coast of Puerto Rico, and the one and only florist on the island was infuriating my brides. He couldn’t just look at a picture and copy what they wanted – he had to “interpret” it “creatively.” Let me assure you that interpretations of creativity can vary dramatically. The thing about living in such an isolated place is that we didn’t have any other vendor options. I followed the theory that if you want to have it done right, sometimes the only option is to do it yourself. That was seven years ago.

When I first started looking for a flower supplier in Puerto Rico, I got seriously frustrated. They don’t have elaborate websites – or any website at all – for the most case. My Spanish, while passable, is a challenge on the telephone where I sometimes can’t understand the rapid fire Puerto Rican dialect (even after living here for more than seven years).

What was worse was that when I did get some suppliers (I finally flew over to the big island and spent a day meeting with them in person to get all my questions answered), I quickly learned the hard way that my newness to the industry was getting me taken advantage of – they’d sell me anything expensive, even if it was something too delicate to actually work in this tropical environment.

Let me assure you that on an island off an island, you cannot use peonies, tulips, ranunculus, poppies, anemones, and a host of other really delicate flowers. Especially for outdoor weddings and events. It just doesn’t work. But nobody told me that – they just sold me flowers and then laughed at my horror stories of making them work the first few months. I learned to order safe backups in the same colors as the new flowers I was working with just in case. Flowers didn’t become profitable for my company for a long time.

And then I met Randall Franklin. He’s a sales rep at a company called Potomac Floral Wholesale in Silver Spring, Maryland – next to DC, my hometown. And I learned quickly that their company could send me just about anything that could be sent from the big island and get them here just as quickly. The difference was, Randall wouldn’t sell me things that wouldn’t survive the trip, or work in the Caribbean. He gave me excellent guidance.

He was a godsend and he talked me through hand-wiring orchids and sent me the supplies I needed. He held my hand through arrangements that looked so complicated to me that I wanted to scream, looking at the pictures and telling me exactly how it had been done and what I needed to use. I did my own homework too and taught myself everything I needed to learn along the way, but if not for the hand-holding of this flower guy back in the states, I would have had some legitimate disasters.

All along, I’ve continued to buy about half of my flowers from local San Juan suppliers. But the thing is that the flowers aren’t “local” even if they’re tropical – Puerto Rican suppliers are getting the vast majority of their flowers from the same place as any big supplier up in the states. Most roses come from Latin America and most of the world’s commercial orchid population comes from Thailand (a hot mess for weddings worldwide when political problems shut down their airport a few years ago). I buy from Puerto Rico when I can because of the shipping costs. But if I have something special or urgent, I call Potomac Floral Wholesale. Every time.

As my skills as a florist improved, we opened Flowers in Vieques to offer floral services to brides and grooms who weren’t my wedding planning clients. There are some beautiful hotels on this island and not everybody uses a wedding planner nowadays. DIY is big, even if destination-DIY is tricky. All of a sudden we were getting more unusual requests and needing more flowers more frequently.

The thing is, getting flowers only begins by ordering them. It’s actually having them arrive ALIVE and on time that’s nearly impossible down here. And we’ve had some close calls. Boxes of flowers stuck in customs for a couple of days and things like that. But Randall spent a LOT of time with me on the phone with UPS getting boxes grabbed and held in cold storage in San Juan while I put somebody on an airplane to the big island to get them. When you’re that far behind, you can’t wait for the one and only UPS guy to arrive on a ferry at almost 11 pm to deliver them to you the night before the wedding. Even if your company loses money, it’s better to personally retrieve them and have them in your hands as early as possible. What if the weather gets bad and the ferry doesn’t make its trip? I’d be screwed. I can’t take that risk – there’s only one strike in weddings.

At some point a few years ago, Potomac switched to FedEx. Nothing’s different about the delivery – the one and only FedEx guy comes and finds me wherever I am (at a wedding welcome party in a bar one night) at 10 or 11 pm when the last ferry finally arrives and he unloads the FedEx cargo. But he’s a nice guy and always texts me to let me know when he’ll be getting here and if he’s got my boxes. Sometimes, he doesn’t.

Enter the vendor-love-of-my-life, Andy Pagan – the general manager of Potomac Floral Wholesale. Randall was gone for the night when I realized we had a shipping problem and called for help. Our flowers were stuck in San Juan on a Friday night and wouldn’t be shipped til Monday. And we knew they’d be dead by then. Andy returned my urgent call and it turns out, he’s Puerto Rican. That’s key when you need to get through the automated phone system to contact the actual counter of the FedEx office by the airport in San Juan. He got them to put our flowers into cold storage and we had someone waiting at the back door of the FedEx building at 8 am the next morning to retrieve them. Disaster averted. 2014-12-14-DianeandRogierwelcomesign2.jpg

Last week, I had a similar problem. I couldn’t order my flowers down here for Diane Phelan and Rogier de Boer’s wedding because the garden roses she desperately wanted wouldn’t be on the big island early enough for a Thursday wedding. I’d planned ahead, carefully coordinating with Andy, and I thought for sure we’d have them Tuesday night, based on our last few shipments. But it was not to be. When I called my FedEx guy (how jealous are you that I KNOW who should have my flowers on the way to me) and he didn’t have them, I flat-out panicked. Diane was going down the aisle on Thursday at 3:30 pm. Best chance of delivery had become 11 pm on Tuesday night. And having been out of water so long, they’d need a good soak before we could start working with them to create décor and bouquets. If they weren’t dead.

I texted Andy in a panic and he contacted his rep immediately. At midnight, we were still on the phone sorting things out but Andy got FedEx to find the flowers (somehow mysteriously stuck in Memphis since 2:30 am the prior morning – see I told you they should have gotten here). Because of the GM’s persistence, FedEx found the box in Memphis and got it on an airplane to Puerto Rico. One of my employees flew to the big island, retrieved it as soon as it arrived on the 10 am flight (not without incident and holdups at Agricultura on the way in) and hand-carried those flowers back to Vieques on the next flight. 2014-12-14-DianeandRogierbridalbouquet.JPG

Not every vendor would have done that for just any customer. It takes relationship-building from the first moment you start planning weddings, even if it’s your own special day. Over the years, caterers have found unusual last-minute signature drink ingredients, even when they had to be brought in from St. Croix. And my cake lady has come through spectacularly even after a bride changed the cake flavor three times in the last week prior to her wedding. They didn’t have to do those things but they did – because I asked nicely and explained the predicament and didn’t yell or scream or make demands.
2014-12-14-DianeandRogierscake.JPG

A little bit of sugar goes a long way in wedding planning. The way you treat your vendors will be reflected in their performance at the wedding events. Being organized, keeping them in the loop, ALWAYS paying on time and thanking them for tremendous efforts is the way to make sure that when something goes wrong, you have a whole team behind you to help fix the problem. If your vendors won’t help you in a crisis, you’re working with the wrong vendors.

Until next time, happy wedding planning from Weddings in Vieques and Sandy Malone Weddings & Events!

The pint-sized performer completely breaks it down to Major Lazer’s song “Jet Blue Jet” in a video uploaded this week by choreographer Tricia Miranda. And then he puts it back together and breaks it down again, just because he can. That is exactly how awesome this kid’s moves are.

Just look at him go.

Death Takes A Holiday

Ten days after attending the opening night of the California Shakespeare Theater’s new production of The Comedy of Errors I experienced a more personal comedy of errors that fell into that memorable category of “Everything’s all right now” stories.

I had planned to meet some friends from Sonoma for dinner. After making a reservation on Open Table (and sending them a copy of our reservation), I dutifully took a shower and headed across town to a favorite Indian restaurant.

There was just one problem. A software glitch had generated an email containing information about the wrong restaurant. As a result, I went to one place while my friends went to another.

When they arrived at a restaurant that was not the kind of place I would normally choose to eat (and I failed to show up), they tried to reach me by phone. Receiving no answer, they became worried and headed over to my apartment to check and see if I was all right. After further attempts to get me to answer the phone or come to the door, they decided to play it safe and called 911.

Both parties had left their respective restaurants at about 7:10 p.m. I, of course was fine. But, having just missed a #22 Fillmore bus, I took the long way around town, arriving at my corner on a #33 Ashbury bus.

As I was about to cross 18th Street, I noticed several police cars with flashing lights and a Fire Department’s emergency rescue vehicle parked in front of my apartment building. My friend Michael was standing in front, looking deeply concerned. As Texas Governor Rick Perry would say, “Oops.”

Once Michael informed the first responders that I was safe, we all breathed a sigh of relief and managed to sort out the details of which communications misfired and what else had gone wrong. We were, to say the very least, grateful for the things that went well (it never hurts to see a chorus of hunky men who look like beefcake calendar models in police uniforms exiting your building).

Thankfully, no one was hurt. The SFPD’s response time was magnificent; their officers exceptionally polite and professional. Nevertheless, it’s a little unnerving to step off the bus and get a preview of what things might look like on the day one dies.

The next day I received word that a very dear friend of mine from Rhode Island had passed away. As fate would have it, both she and her husband (who had expired 11 years prior) died on my birthday.

As part of the 2014 San Francisco Jewish Film Festival, I watched a series of shorts in which slightly disorganized Jewish families tried to deal with a set of comic circumstances surrounding the unexpected death of a loved one. As a culture, Jews seem to have a special affinity for dark humor.

Leon Prudovsky’s frenetic film, Welcome and Our Condolences, focuses on a family of Russian Jews who are flying to Israel to start a new life. It’s 1991 (the beginning of a huge exodus of Jewish immigrants from the Soviet Union to Israel) and 12-year-old Misha has been put in charge of the family’s home video camera as a way of keeping him busy and documenting their trip.

Gera (Gera Sandler) is a classic, absent-minded husband while his wife, Ola (Ola Schur Selektar), has been left in charge of luggage and documentation. Traveling with them is her elderly Aunt Rosa (Rosa Lifshitz) who dies in her sleep just as their plane is preparing to land at Ben Gurion Airport in Tel Aviv.

Aunt Rosa (Rosa Lifshitz) gets the celebrity treatment

As soon as they try to disembark, the family runs into a bureaucratic nightmare. If Aunt Rosa is dead on arrival, she can’t receive an Israeli immigration certificate. If she can’t be certified as a Jew, it will cost a lot more for Rosa’s body to enter the country.

Meanwhile, Gera and his wife are sweating to death because they arrived wearing three layers of winter clothes in order to avoid paying fees for excess baggage. Gera is getting sick from the free meatballs he ate in the airport while Misha happily continues to shoot a family film.

What Gera and Ola don’t know is that Aunt Rosa has been identified by the authorities as the 100,000th Jew to immigrate from Russia. Needless to say, the Israeli media is eager to celebrate her arrival in Tel Aviv.

Prudovsky’s short is filled with some wonderful character actors who help to make the Israeli immigration process an exercise in bureaucratic lunacy. Here’s the trailer:

What happens to David (Ben Schwartz) when his Mexican vacation is upended by the death of his traveling companion, Josh (Joshua Cohen)? Written by Benjamin Berman (and directed by Berman and Joshua Cohen), I’m A Mitzvah becomes a cross-cultural comedy of errors enhanced by the voice of Lainie Kazan as a panicky Jewish mother who won’t stop screaming over the phone that her dead son’s body has to be brought back to the United States so she can see him one last time.

It’s difficult enough for David to explain to a Mexican undertaker that, because Joel is Jewish, he can’t be embalmed. But when David finally gets Joel’s body into a makeshift coffin, he’s subject to further humiliations when his flight to the United States is cancelled. After renting a motel room, drinking a bottle of tequila, and reading the traditional mourner’s kaddish from the screen of his iPhone, the exhausted David sets out with Josh’s coffin to enjoy some local nightlife. Whether dancing with locals or cuddling with an attractive Mexican woman on a moonlit beach, complications ensue.

Written and directed Kate Marks, 7 Day Gig offers viewers the following description:

“A punk, an old man, and a chicken gather round for a make-shift Shiva after Jay (a Romanian/Guamanian/Catholic/Jew) puts an ad on Craigslist looking for mourners to join him.”

This nine-minute long, perversely-complicated short is a classic example of what can go wrong at the worst possible time. Thankfully, you can watch 7 Day Gig below in its entirety.

Selena Gomez Takes Selfies With Harmony Korine In Miami

Selena Gomez reunited with “Spring Breakers” director Harmony Korine in Miami this weekend. The pair was seen walking around the city, and Gomez ‘grammed a car selfie captioned with angel and devil emojis. (Good one.)

Korine has said in interviews that Gomez was the first actress he cast in “Spring Breakers.” “Immediately, instinctively, I said it would be great if Selena Gomez would do this,” he told Indiewire. A sequel to the hit film, which also starred James Franco, Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Benson and Rachel Korine, is reportedly in the works, but will be written by Irvine Welsh. Neither Korine nor the original stars are attached to the project, but that won’t stop the “Spring Breakers” gang from being straight up besties.

Like most of the kids who’d ended up alone and on the streets after the start of the war, thirteen-year-old Joey and her friends had become largely nocturnal. It was easier to remain unseen in the dark. And remaining unseen was very important. As disorganized and uncoordinated as it was, the government was still trying to take responsibility for its youngest and most vulnerable citizens. The problem was, they weren’t very good at it.No one knew what it was about housing large groups of children in institutional settings, but such places nearly always turned out to be nightmarish places. There was never enough food, older kids frequently terrorized younger ones, and discipline always seemed to devolve into corporal punishment of the worst kind. Joey and the boys had heard terrible stories of the abuses kids had suffered in the state run children’s homes, and they were determined to avoid them.So Joey and her friends decide on a desperate gamble. They will leave the relative safety of their city, and the only life they’ve ever known, to escape the war that has cost them the lives of parents and friends. Their greatest obstacle – the land of their enemy lies between them and freedom. Eight children, the oldest sixteen, the youngest only four, set out on an odyssey that will change their lives forever.
