Photographer, 30, Dies After Being Swept Away by Flood Waters While Taking Photos in Storm Drain

Friends of a beloved Philadelphia photographer are mourning the woman’s death after she was fatally swept away in a storm drain during a flash flood last weekend.

Rebecca Bunting, 30, and her boyfriend were inside a sewer by Roosevelt Boulevard in Northeast Philadelphia taking photos around 6 p.m. on Saturday, June 2, when a rush of water came through and dragged them both down the system, police say.

The man was able to pull himself out, but Bunting was swept away. A neighbor told 6 ABC that he heard a man screaming for help Saturday night. He said he ran outside to find Bunting’s boyfriend screaming her name by the water.

A rescue team found her body around 10:45 a.m. on Sunday, trapped under furniture left in Pennypack Creek near Philadelphia’s Holmesburg neighborhood.  In the wake of the death, Bunting’s boyfriend remembered her in a pair of Instagram posts.

“I’m glad I got to make so many memories with her. I love you so much Becca and I’m hurting so bad right now,” he wrote alongside a photo of the two posing together with wide smiles.

“Thinking back on all these memories makes me smile while these tears roll down my face. I will continue to share our memories since we had so many great ones. Please watch over your family and I, we really need it right now my love.”

Police say Bunting and her boyfriend entered the storm drain without permission to take part in “Urban Exploration,” in which they film their experiences while taking photos and footage at often abandoned locations.

“She was always trying to get really cool photos,” Bunting’s friend, Cristen DeDomenico, told 6 ABC. “She’s really talented. She could bring out beauty in any landscape.”

Bunting’s Instagram is filled with artistic photos of empty churches, plane wreckage, abandoned hospitals and other spaces. She amassed more than 15,000 followers on the social media site and often wrote of her love for photography.

“My camera is my tool,” she wrote alongside one Instagram photo of herself holding a camera. “Through it I give reason to everything around me.”

Friends have posted several tributes to Bunting on her Facebook page, and have announced a memorial for the artist scheduled for June 17.

“Words can’t express the heartache I feel in this moment. The world lost a truly amazing person Rebecca Bword Bunting …” one person wrote in a Facebook post. “Our weirdness and love for art quickly combined and you posed for a lot of MySpace worthy photoshoots (like this photo you climbed on a roof for) ha. We would spend days dressing up and taking pictures for fun.”

They continued: “We climbed rocks and “keep out” fences while exploring the places most people wouldn’t go. You always saw beauty in the things people took for granted. I loved having you as a neighbor and friend. You are an amazing soul that made an impact on the world through your work and existence. I’m grateful that I was able to meet such a beautiful person in my lifetime. Rest In Peace”

Taking The ‘High’ Road: The Best Stoned Celebrity Confessions Ever

Like many Americans, some celebrities enjoy the occasional — or not-so-occasional — herbal indulgence.

This 4/20, where looking back at the times stars, from A-list actors to singing sensations, have candidly shared their funniest tales of marijuana escapades. Whether you’re stone-cold sober or sky high, their confessions are bound to give you a serious case of the giggles:

Nick Jonas
The singer’s spontaneous choice to enjoy a THC-laced lollipop had some humiliating (for him, but hilarious for us) consequences. As Jonas recalled on The Tonight Show, a friend offered him the special candy and he thought, ‘Yeah sure, why not,’ even though he usually does not partake.

“I enjoyed the night, felt great, went to bed feeling fine,” he said. “I woke up the next day — slow motion, everything’s in slow motion. I’m like, ‘Oh no, this is happening, this is real’ — because I had to be up for the Young Hollywood Awards, presenting at the Young Hollywood Awards.”

“I’m hearing these voices . It’s horrible, so I call down to my girlfriend who’s in the kitchen. ‘Babe, I need some bread, I need some coffee. Something!’” he continued. “I get in the car, I’m trying to focus, get in the right mind frame, I’m feeling better, and then out of nowhere, I get a NARB … A NARB is a no apparent reason boner. It’s just there, I don’t know what to do.”

Jonas had no choice but to stand on the red carpet with his hands in front of his crotch.

Host Jimmy Fallon confirmed the strategy by showing the audience some throwback pics from carpet, and then took it a step further with a clip of his disastrous award presentation on stage.

“I walked offstage, I looked at my manager, I was like, ‘You think anybody knew?’ He’s like, ‘Yes, They definitely did,’” Jonas said.

David Spade

During an appearance on Ellen DeGeneres’ talk show, the actor and comedian revealed he had a little too much fun at the insanely star-studded party — and confused the birthday girl for none other than Justin Bieber.

After discussing brushing shoulders with Kim Kardashian West and Kris Jenner, Spade launched into the hilarious sequence of events that ensued when he came across one of DeGeneres’ “rapper buddies,” whom she assumes is French Montana. “He whipped out some medical marijuana — a big rolled up doobie of it,” recalled Spade.

Spade said everything was “cool for a second” until it hit him. “… I thought you were Justin Bieber for the first half hour,” said Spade as the host cracked up. “It’s only because of your haircut! Not what you were wearing, you looked great.”

Kathy Bates
Yes, the Disjointed star lights up before reading scripts for her weed dispensary sitcom.

“When I read the scripts, I’m stoned,” Bates shared on Late Night with Seth Meyers. “I just wish I had a seatbelt in bed. I laugh so hard I’m afraid to get up… is research!”

A few days earlier, the actress explained to Late Show host Stephen Colbert why you should never smoke with Bill Maher. “I actually had just a quick taste one time when I sat next to Bill Maher at a party. It was Penny Marshall’s birthday,” she said. “And I just got to tell you, never share a joint with a stranger, even if they’re famous — especially Bill Maher. I don’t even remember what happened, it was just insane.”

Kirsten Dunst
The actress accidentally got higher than she had ever been before on the set of her new movie, Woodshock. “You have movie pot, which is basically fake,” she explained on Jimmy Kimmel Live. “But we were doing this one scene where, obviously in the movie I don’t smoke that many, but when you’re doing takes you’re doing one after the next, after next … So, after we’re done with the scene I went back to this little bedroom to rest, and I started to feel like I was losing my mind. I went to the bathroom, I’m pacing. , ‘There is something wrong with me, I think I need to go to the hospital. Like, there’s something seriously up. I feel like I’m losing my mind. I’m shaking, I’m hot, I’m just flipping out.’ ”

“ goes back, he looks at everything I smoked. He came back and he’s like, ‘Oh, you smoked a full blunt on one of the takes.’ And we’re talking about Humboldt weed. I don’t smoke full joints. This is like strong s—,” she continued, going on to explain that the locals who had rolled the joints threw some real ones in “for fun.”

“I was crying, laughing, eating a peanut butter sandwich — I couldn’t film anymore, they sent me home! I was a total mess. I’ve never been that stoned in my entire life.”

Snoop Dogg
Demi Lovato revealed that the rapper’s notorious love of marijuana helped inspire her party-themed “Sorry Not Sorry” music video on The Tonight Show.

“It was inspired by a house party that I had,” Lovato shared. “One day I was like, ‘I want to have people over.’ I had just gone through a breakup, I was like, ‘I’m newly single. I want to meet people.’ I called my friend Dave-O, and I was like, ‘Dave-O, just invited people over.’ He was like, ‘Okay …’ A couple hours later, Snoop Dogg was there … French Montana was there, and Ty Dolla $ ign and Wiz Khalifa, and all these people were there, and I was like, ‘Wait a second, I just wanted to have like a couple people over to hang out.’ And all of a sudden, my house was filled with pot smoke everywhere.”

The singer tried her best to get the situation under control, but to no avail.

“I was like, ‘No smoking inside! Get out! Get out!’ ” she said. “I wasn’t going to tell Snoop not to smoke in my house. So, I was like, ‘Okay, Snoop, do what you want.’ And then my chef came in the next morning and was like, ‘Smells like Snoop Dogg was here.’ And I was like, ‘No, he literally was!’ ”

Miley Cyrus
While explaining her decision to take a break from smoking weed on The Tonight Show, the notoriously pro-marijuana singer revealed that the drug had influenced her interview antics.

“You, without knowing it were kind of the reason for ,” she told host Jimmy Fallon. “Because I’ve always been very stoned on your shows… Remember the last time I was here, I think I was dressed as like a bunny rabbit and then like a cat? There’s a reason for that — I was high.”

“I stopped smoking because to sit here and to talk about what I’m doing I wanted to be really clear because I’m actually the most passionate about what I’m doing with this record,” Cyrus continued. “This record for me at this moment is the most important album that I’ve ever made and so I wanted to make sure I’m super clear about the way I’m talking.”

The star also admitted that her stoner days mostly involved staying home to eat and play with her pets. “I was spending way too much time with the pig, and not enough time doing really anything,” she said.

Anne Hathaway
Andy Cohen was partially successful at getting Hathaway to come clean about her rumored smoking habit while playing “Plead the Fifth” on Watch What Happens Live.

“There was a rumor in 2015 that a photo exists and was circulating of you with a massive blunt,” Cohen began his inquiry. “On a scale of one to 10, how big of a stoner is Anne Hathaway?”

“I’m not a little one,” Hathaway replied with a smirk. “But here’s the thing, here’s the thing, though. I’m a parent and I don’t feel like getting arrested, so I’m gonna say ‘zero.’ I guess I should have just pleaded the fifth on that one. But I don’t have a card or anything.”

Elle King

The “Ex’s & Oh’s” singer bit off a little more THC than she could chew before the 2017 Grammys. “Note to self, don’t eat a bunch of pot muffins before the Grammys red carpet. #AccidentallyHighAF,” she captioned a glazed-eyed photo of herself being interviewed on the red carpet.

In another post, King noted that she hadn’t realized the flower crown she wore to the ceremony made her look like “A F—— SNAPCHAT FILTER” because of the whole “accidentally high AF” thing.

King went on to share a clip from one of her on-camera interviews from the night, critiquing her own dazed performance.

“This is what happens when you’re accidentally rly stoned at the Grammys. You see something shiny, forget that you’re on camera, then forget the question, then remember no one should ever let me be interviewed. #SorryMom #StonedAtTheGrammys,” she wrote.

Andrew Garfield
Garfield recently recounted his favorite birthday memory for W magazine, revealing that he and and group of friends, including then-girlfriend Emma Stone, had an extra magical time at Disneyland in 2012.

“They came out to L.A. to surprise me. We went to Disneyland. We ate pot brownies. It was literally heaven,” he recalled. The actor went on to admit he rode Space Mountain three times, and “freaked out” on It’s a Small World: “I was like, ‘it is — it is a f—ing small world — it’s a f—ing – it’s a really f—ing small world, guys, is anyone else seeing how small it is?’ Amazing. Amazing.”

“It was wild. It was one of the best days of my life. It really was,” he added.

Susan Sarandon
Like many celebrity confessions, Sarandon’s awards show secret was first disclosed on Andy Cohen’s Watch What Happens Live. During a round of “Plead the Fifth” in 2013, Cohen asked the screen legend to “Name one Hollywood event that you should up to stoned.”

“Only one?” she responded. “I would say almost all except the Oscars.”

Speaking to PEOPLE a few months later, Sarandon admitted that it was “an exaggeration” to say that she was high at “every awards show.” “That whole thing of going stoned to every awards show, I wish that could have been possible, but no, that was an exaggeration,” she said.

The screen legend went on to explain the practical pitfalls of toking up before an awards ceremony. “The only down side I can think of with weed is the munchies. And I don’t handle them, I munch,” she confessed. “Awards shows are four hours long. So by the time you even get through the red carpet, unfortunately, you’re not high anymore. But your blood sugar drops and they would do very well to pass out munchies. I remember one time sitting in front of Seal at a very long show and he was passing out little snacks, which was very helpful.”

Jennifer Lawrence
Following in Sarandon’s footsteps, Lawrence spilled about her pre-Oscars puffing on Watch What Happens Live. “I smoked pot at none of , but I saw my brother smoking out of a bong before one of the Oscars, won’t say which,” she told Cohen.

“Did you take a little hit?” the host pressed.

“Um, yeah,” she replied.

As for whether the pre-show bong moment took place the year she won Best Actress (and famously fell on her way to the podium), Lawrence kept mum and opted to “plead the fifth.”

Zayn Malik
The former One Directioner-turned-solo-star opened up about his herb habits during a November 2016 interview with ES Magazine. “Weed is also a part of my life for certain things,” he told the outlet. “I find it helps me be creative. Some people say it kills your ambition, some people say it destroys your personality. Personally I haven’t had any of them experiences yet.”

When the mag asked if he eats his breakfast with a side of pot, he coyly grinned and replied “I don’t think I’m allowed to specify — don’t get me arrested.”

Tove Lo

The “Habits (Stay High)” singer revealed to PEOPLE that her collaboration with Wiz Khalifa on the track “Influence” involved some studio smoking.

“He came to the studio, we smoked, and he recorded,” she said. Lo recalled being impressed with Khalifa’s performance ability after he partook in the potent strain. “I remember sitting there like, ‘This is really good weed, and f—, how can he sing that fast?!’ ”

Not afraid to show the receipts, Lo posted a video of her studio session with the famous cannabis connoisseur, in which they trade hits from a homemade apple pipe.

Joe Jonas

In a 2013 essay in New York magazine, the DNCE singer wrote about his first time smoking weed, which happened to be at the behest of fellow teen stars Miley Cyrus and Demi Lovato.

“The first time I smoked weed was with Demi and Miley. I must have been 17 or 18. They kept saying, ‘Try it! Try it!’ so I gave it a shot, and it was all right,” he shared.

Lovato made the incident truly memorable in 2015 when she commemorated it in on Instagram in celebration of 4/20.

“In honor of our former escapades, I thought you’d like this to remember your first blaze.. Happy #420 @joejonas. #disneyhighclassof09,” she captioned a Photoshopped pic featuring a blazed-out Jonas and an oversized joint.

Aziz Ansari
Ansari hilariously dished to PEOPLE about his very uniquely celebrity experience of watching a documentary narrated by a friend while high.

“It was fun. I was incredibly high,” the Master of None star told PEOPLE about attending the debut of fellow pot fan Jennifer Lawrence’s doc Beautiful Planet.

“That IMAX screen was so humongous. And since we’re friends, it’s weird hearing your friend’s voice talking about this stuff. It’s like, why are you telling me about this? It was like she sat me down and said, ‘Hey, just so you know!’ ” he joked.

The Trainwreck Cast
Bill Hader told Seth Meyers all about the cast’s Amsterdam adventure during a 2015 Late Night appearance. “We got stoned. We all got crazy stoned,” the actor said when Meyers asked what they got up to in the Dutch city.

According to Hader, the experience turned into a bit of a misadventure when he and costar Vanessa Bayer decided to take a stroll through the red light district. “Vanessa was just holding on to me for like dear life, and just looking around — stoned, freaked out … and then we lost her. And I lost her, and it’s my fault, and then it was like I was too stoned to go find her.”

The Saturday Night Live actress then showed up on the Late Night set to chastise Hader for leaving her behind.

Bella Hadid Shares Throwback Photo of Her and Kendall Jenner Taking a Topless Swim in the Ocean

What happens on vacation stays on vacation … unless you post the proof to social media!

On Saturday, Bella Hadid shared a throwback photo of herself and pal Kendall Jenner running out into the ocean for a little topless swim — with their bikini tops still in their hands.

In the risqué snap, the supermodel friends are joined by two of their mutual friends, singer Justine Skye and photographer Renell Medrano, all of whom were wearing cheeky pairs of thong bathing suit bottoms.

“Woke up missing this pureeee love. 💙🦋” Hadid, 21, wrote alongside the sun-filled snap.

While Hadid didn’t specify which vacation the shot was from, it could have taken on the tropical vacation the famous friends enjoyed together in May 2017. In photos documenting that fun-filled trip, the models appeared to be wearing very similar bathing suits to the ones they were (partly) wearing in Hadid’s throwback snap.

While the pair have yet to jet off to a tropical destination together this year, the close friends did celebrate the new year together in chic black-and-white ensembles. Hadid wore a black jumpsuit with cut-outs along the front, and Jenner, 22, wore a pair of black wide-leg pants with a white crop top and black jacket.

The two posed for a photo in front of two sleek white cars that Jenner later posted to her Instagram with the caption “new year, same us.”

Madonna to Direct Ballet Biopic ‘Taking Flight’ About Michaela DePrince

Madonna will get in the director’s chair again with the forthcoming film “Taking Flight,” a drama based on the life of Sierra Leone-born ballerina Michaela DePrince.
MGM began developing the film in 2015 after acquiring the rights to Michaela and her mother Elaine DePrince’s memoir “Taking Flight: From War Orphan to Star Ballerina.” The book follows Michaela’s life from an orphan in war-torn Sierra Leone to her adoption in the U.S and her journey to becoming a professional dancer.
“Michaela’s journey resonated with me deeply as both an artist and an activist who understands adversity,” Madonna said in a statement first published in Variety. “We have a unique opportunity to shed light on Sierra Leone and let Michaela be the voice for all the orphaned children she grew up beside. I am honored to bring her story to life.”
The screenplay was written by Camilla Blackett and producers include Alloy Entertainment’s Leslie Morgenstein and Elysa Koplovitz Dutton along with Ben Pugh and Madonna’s longtime manager Guy Oseary.
Many know DePrince from the 2012 ballet documentary “First Position.” She was adopted at age four and taken to the United States by Elaine and Charles DePrince. She landed her first professional job at age 17 in

Fitness Star Emily Skye Stopped Taking Antidepressants Thanks to Exercise: ‘I Felt Like a Superhero’

Before fitness became a vital part of Emily Skye‘s life, the influencer struggled with depression, disordered eating and bullying.

At just 11 years old, a doctor put Skye on antidepressants.

“In grade school, they’d make frog noises when I walked past because I had big eyes, and they called me Stick Creature because I was skinny,” the Australian, 32, tells Women’s Health for the July/August cover.

Skye started modeling at age 13 — her mom’s attempt to help her gain confidence — but being around the other girls only lowered her self-esteem.

“I’d go to castings and compare myself to the other women,” she says. “I would think, ‘I’m not pretty enough or skinny enough.’ But I kept modeling because I needed praise to feel loved.”

And in her 20s, Skye was working out excessively — two hours of cardio a day — while eating just carrots, celery and hummus to stay a size zero.

“ on the verge of an eating disorder,” she says, “but I wasn’t fit or healthy. I had so much self-hate that sometimes I didn’t feel like I wanted to live.”

But at age 24, Skye found fitness magazines and started on a path that would eventually become her career.

“The women seemed so strong and healthy,” she says. “I loved the idea of using weights to transform your body, to look and feel powerful.”

With each workout, Skye started to feel better about herself, and was able to stop taking antidepressants.

“Before I had this cloudy feeling, and now, the sun was shining. I thought, ‘This is what being alive is like.’ I felt like a superhero,” she says.

Now Skye — who recently announced that she’s pregnant with her first child — has 2.1 million Instagram followers who love her ability to give out smart fitness advice while still keeping it real about belly bloat and “transformation” photos.

“It’s so important for women to remember that the people who inspire them are human and shouldn’t be put up on pedestals,” she says.

‘Big Bang Theory’ Leads Taking Pay Cuts So Female Co-Stars Can Get Raises

The five leading stars of CBS’s “The Big Bang Theory” are apparently taking pay cuts so that two of their longtime castmates can get raises.

Jim Parsons, Johnny Galecki, Kaley Cuoco, Kunal Nayyar and Simon Helberg ― who have all been on the show since Season 1’s premiere in 2007 ― reportedly agreed to take $ 100,000 pay cuts from their $ 1 million per episode salaries for upcoming Seasons 11 and 12 to increase the salaries of Mayim Bialik and Melissa Rauch, Variety reported, citing multiple sources.

Bialik ― who earned four Emmy nominations for her role as Sheldon’s girlfriend, Amy ― and Rauch have become key characters in the show since joining in Season 3. The two currently make around $ 200,000 per episode, according to Variety, and are gearing up for contract negotiations this week.

With the money from their co-stars, the two could each bump up to around $ 450,000 per episode for a 48-episode deal. However, Deadline reported they may be seeking parity with their co-stars.

Last month, The Hollywood Reporter revealed the original five actors will each be earning $ 1 million per episode for the final two seasons of the CBS series, which is television’s No. 1 comedy for the key demographic of 18-to-49-year-olds.

Parsons, Galecki and Cuoco first inked their $ 1 million per episode contracts with Warner Bros. Television back in 2014, making them TV’s current highest-paid comedy actors. In its ninth season, the show averaged 20 million viewers per episode.

Reps for Parsons, Galecki, Cuoco, Nayyar and Helberg were not immediately available to comment.

This Amazing Video Is Taking Voguing Out Of The Club And Into The Streets

Voguing, the classic queer dance, takes center stage ― but off stage and off the runway ― in a stunning new video entitled “HANDS.”

Creator Kemar Jewel, who previously released “Voguing Train,” told The Huffington Post that the video is intended to help people understand that no matter who you are or how you identify, voguing can be a part of your life.

“The beauty of taking vogue and putting it into everyday life is that it helps to reveal the people who are apart of voguing and ballroom culture as apart of society,” Jewel told The Huffington Post. “Seeing voguing in parks, schools, bars, and churches (shameless plug for my next video) helps to bring awareness that this style of dance is used to celebrate life and self-expression.”

SHOPPING DEALS UPDATE:

Photoshop Battle Of Trump Taking Off A Pen Cap Is So On Point

For many in the U.S., it’s been difficult not to be overcomb-ed with anger in the past few months.

But Reddit’s latest Photoshop Battle might take the edge off.

A Photoshop Battle — or simply PsBattle — is a forum where users on the content-sharing site post edited versions of a photo. Its latest subject is this seemingly dull picture of Trump taking the cap off of a pen:

This picture was taken on Jan. 25, right before Trump signed an executive order instructing the construction of a wall along the Mexico-U.S. border.

This news, along with the president’s plans for an executive order drastically limiting refugee admissions and banning visas for individuals from several Muslim-majority countries, sparked protests and outcry — and Reddit, in its own way, was no different.

Here are some of the sharpest Photoshopped versions of the above picture of Trump and his pen. Let the good times scroll.

Naturally, there were plenty of wall jokes, too.

Taking My Own Advice

A human being is a part of the whole called by us, the “Universe” — a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feeling as something separated from the rest — a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest to us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty.

Decades later and Albert Einstein’s words still hold much value and truth.

We are not separate from the whole. This is the understanding I came to after living a life on the opposite end of the spectrum.

When I studied adolescent development in graduate school, I was particularly fascinated with the theory of egocentrism and the concept of personal fables: As teenagers, we hold the belief that we are unique and special, separate from the rest. We desire to be the center of attention, and believe that nobody could ever understand our personal experiences.

Thinking back to my younger years, I felt like nobody understood me. The theory relates to adolescents specifically, but I wonder if it could be applied to one’s entire lifespan, depending on a person’s development. It’s only been in the last two years that I have let go of my personal fable and have come to integrate and embody the depth of Einstein’s words.

So why is this important?

I travelled to India, embarking on a journey of transformation and when I returned I was living by Einstein’s words: seeing the energy everywhere I went, experiencing the intricate connections that exist in everything, viewing life as one giant web, each moment interwoven into the next.

However, I was undermining a very important reality… One’s individual journey.

I came back to North America to a loved one who had fallen ill and decided that, with all the tools I had acquired while away, it was my responsibility to heal this person. I had learned so much about health and healing during my travels and felt like I held the key to her recovery.

How many of you have experienced that moment when you’re suddenly filled with hope, believing that you’ve discovered the missing link to another’s liberation?

When I was away I faced my own health issues and came to appreciate the importance of treating the body like a temple so that it is able to heal.

How we nourish ourselves in terms of what we consume and the kind of attention we give our bodies has a huge impact on our health. Self-love is essential in this equation.

And when I realized this, I was determined to transmit this “knowing” and “awaken” all those around me, adhering to Einstein’s notion that we are not separate from the whole.

But here’s the thing I was undermining: While there is truth in the fact that we are all one, it’s not our job to make others see what we see and do what we do.

Every person is here to experience his or her own journey and all we can do is commit to our own path, take the necessary steps to stay on course, lend a helping hand to those who desire support and love and accept those who don’t.

I know that staying away from processed foods, refined sugars, and GMOs is critical when it comes to treating my body well; I know that exercising from a loving place and consciously moving my body on a regular basis is fundamental to my health; I know that meditating daily supports my mental clarity and stability; I know that drinking tons of water and getting good sleep impacts my vitality; And I now know that it’s not my role to impose these truths on others who are not willing to receive them.

You know what I’m talking about, don’t you?

Disease occurs when energy is blocked inside the body and what we consume in the process has massive impact on our ability to release those blockages. I have read a plethora of research papers on the importance of nutrition, exercise and a loving mindset when it comes to healing the body. I have watched my own health transform based on these facts. And yet, I cannot enforce these lessons. All I can do is live by them.

This created a lot of personal pain and frustration at one point — I had to give up the role of savior, even with those I love most in this world.

Many of us grow up attached to this identity (e.g., the savior, the giver, the martyr, the helper, etc.), especially women. We are conditioned to believe that it is our obligation to heal/save/fix/change the people we love in this world. But it’s not.

While giving up this identity was painful, it has also been one of the greatest lessons I’ve learned.

It’s not up to us to light another person’s flame; we must ignite our own flame while loving those around us, as they are, and know that the flame may catch at some point… or it may not.

The butterfly effect is something to consider, especially in relation to Einstein’s words: A small change made in this complex system of life can have huge consequences elsewhere… But it is not our role to ensure that happens. Instead, we must trust in the unfolding and continue living our own truth.

Again, we may think we have the solutions for others’ pain. We may be convinced that if she stopped comparing herself to others and had more love and appreciation for her body in this moment or he was willing to see the mind-body connection and work through the emotional hurt in order to heal the physical pain than everything would be different.

While these things may be accurate, there’s a fine line between knowing something to be true and inflicting it onto those who are not ready to receive it.

Thus, after spending countless months trying to make other people see what I see and do what I do and witnessing more damage come from this process than good, I have chosen to surrender and trust in the butterfly effect.

I choose to embody what I preach, instead of merely talking the talk and expecting others to follow; I choose to infuse love into everything I do, whether it’s the food I eat, the activities I engage in, or the stillness I come to; I choose to lend a helping hand to anybody who crosses my path and desires support; And when I fall into an old pattern of neglect, self-hatred, comparison, or lack of presence, I choose to see it and I bring compassion into the equation.

We are human beings — accepting that this is an ongoing journey of growth is part of the process.

So what can we do when it comes to helping those we love?

We can live by what we speak. We can love and honor our bodies every moment of the day. We can help those who want support, while trusting that they have all the inner resources needed. We can light our own fires and allow them to burn brightly. We can be the change. And we can trust that everyone is doing the best they can.

And it’s still a work in progress, as Rumi states, “Yesterday I was clever, so I wanted to change the world. Today I am wise, so I am changing myself.”

See How The World’s Most Beautiful Ballerinas Are Taking Fashion By Storm

Move over A-list celebrities and big-time supermodels—the ballerinas are here! The fashion industry has been flirting with the dancer for awhile now and another company has just joined the list. Wolford, maker of both high-quality tights and Kim Kardashian West’s favorite dress-slash-skirt, has debuted some stunning images created in connection with photographer Dane Shitagi’s Ballerina Project, an Instagram-friendly collection of the world’s top dancers striking gorgeous poses on city streets and in leafy parks.

Here’s Boren in Paris, wearing Wolford.

The images were created to go along with the company’s new “ballerina kits,” specially packaged combos of pieces like leg warmers, tights, and bodysuits that dancers might need during a rehearsal, intel gleaned from Wolford’s ongoing relationship with American Ballet Theatre dancers Isabella Boylston and Stephanie Williams.

Prior to these pointe-shoed beauties, the last ballet megastar to attract our attention was Misty Copeland, making big waves with her impressive Under Armour ads.

For fall 2014, AG Jeans relied heavily on ballerinas to show off how very stretchy its newest denim launch was. Gap jumped on the trend early, shooting San Francisco Ballet’s Yuan Yuan Tan back in 2012.

The ballet love affair is nothing new either. Way back in 2007, fixture company Brizo paired with Jason Wu and shot a campaign with dancers wearing Wu gowns and posing (beautifully) underwater. The relationship between luxury brands and the dance world has also resulted in a few campaigns featuring high-profile industry stars, though not until recently was the actual dance on display. Watch company Movado, for one, was a large sponsor of New York City Ballet and ran ads featuring principals like Paloma Herrera and Mikhail Baryshnikov.

A Wedding Photog Slipped While Taking A Picture And The Result Is Priceless

Photographer Chase Richardson slipped and fell while he was in the middle of taking bridal party pictures at a wedding last June. Poor guy!

Fortunately, though, his wedding fail was not in vain because it resulted in this excellent photo:

2015-07-01-1435793979-93173-chaserichardsonslipphoto.jpg

Richardson snapped the photo at the nuptials of Kristina and Will Moore in June 2014 at the McClain Lodge in Brandon, Mississippi. He explained to The Huffington Post that it had rained all morning leading up to the wedding, which gave way to some slippery pavement.

“When it came time to take the wedding party photos, the rain had subsided, but everything was wet,” he said. “So I decided to shoot the wedding party under a covered patio that was basically a concrete slab. I was framing up the photo of the entire wedding party, and I took a step backwards and slipped in a puddle. It was all kind of a blur, but I hit the ground, broke the lens I was using and cut my finger open. Embarrassing! I shot the rest of the wedding with a very noisy, broken lens and a bleeding finger.”

The groom told HuffPost that Richardson was a total trouper and didn’t miss a beat.

“[My] first thought was just hoping he was okay, it was a pretty nasty fall,” Will said. “We saw there was blood on his hand and hoped he wasn’t hurt too bad. He got up and went right back to work though.”

Richardson didn’t even know he had captured the moment until after the wedding when he was looking through what he had shot.

Fast-forward to a year later, when Richardson tweeted the photo at Jimmy Fallon along with the hashtag #weddingfail.

The “Tonight Show” host ended up featuring the photo on his show. Afterwards, the picture also made the rounds on Reddit where it received more than 5,800 upvotes at the time of publication.

“I think after all of this, I would have to say that this little accident has been worth it,” Richardson said.

The Architecture of Barry Byrne: Taking the Prairie School to Europe

The Architecture of Barry Byrne: Taking the Prairie School to Europe

Barry Byrne (1883-1967) was a radical architect who sought basic principles as fervently as his mentor Frank Lloyd Wright and his inspiration Louis Sullivan, forging an individual style with taut planar skins enveloping modern space plans. In 1922 he designed the first modern Catholic church building, St. Thomas the Apostle in Chicago, and in 1924 he traveled to Europe where he met Mies, Mendelsohn, Oud, and other modernist architects there. He was the only Prairie School architect to build in Europe, designing the concrete Church of Christ the King, built in 1928-31 in Cork, Ireland. A dedicated modernist and progressive Catholic, Byrne concentrated for much of his career on Catholic churches and schools throughout North America, many of them now considered landmarks. This book charts the entire length of Byrne’s work, highlighting its distinctive features while discussing the cultural conditions that kept Byrne in the shadows of his more famous contemporaries. Illustrated by more than one hundred photographs and drawings, this biography explores the interplay of influences and impulses-individualism and communalism, modernism and tradition, pragmatism and faith-enduring throughout Byrne’s life and work.

Rising Star Pico Alexander Talks Social Media, Bioluminescence and Taking Risks

2015-06-03-1433346089-8240349-ALEXANDERPICOBway.com.jpg

I met up with Pico Alexander at the Cafe at the Signature Theatre on the eve of his 24th birthday. He was taller than I expected with a thick head of hair that he hid under his fedora hat. Pico has a spiritual energy to him, with a look and demeanor that reminds me of a young Johnny Depp. When I make the comparison he smiles and blushes; “He was my favorite when I was a kid. I used to pause the dvd Edward Scissorhands because I was crying so much. I felt so bad for him! Like when he punctured the waterbed or tried to cut the steak. I love that guy. Thank you for saying that.” Sodas in hand, we sat down, with piano music playing in the background at the Cafe, and started chatting:

Where does the name Pico come from?
My grandfather started jokingly referring to me as Pico when my mom was pregnant with me. And then when I was born, they wanted to give me a serious name, so they named me Alexander. But nobody ever called me Alexander except for one teacher in sixth grade.

Growing up, you went to LaGuardia High School. What did you focus on?
I auditioned for music and for acting because that’s what my parents were breeding me to be. I played classical piano and trumpet for awhile. My mom has this fond memory of me getting into her car after the audition and saying ‘Mom, i’m going to be an actor’. But in reality I had been writing that in journals for years.

You are kind of a man of mystery. You aren’t very active on social media. You don’t use twitter or have an instagram account.
No social media for me.

Why’s that?
I think that I spent too much time comparing myself to other people and it didn’t seem very real anymore. All of a sudden you have more than a thousand friends and everybody is posting all the best things that happened to them. And it kind of unsettled me really. I started posting a status and waiting to get the likes. If I got the likes then I was validated as a human for that day and if I didn’t it was like “f***, nobody likes me”

Who is Pico?
I don’t know. I’m trying to figure that out. I’d be hesitant to give any sort of an answer because its always changing.

What would your friends say about you?
They would probably say I’m one of the most immature people they’ve ever met!

In what way?
I can be my share of selfish and uncompromising and loud and obnoxious and a bit of an asshole and definitely mean to my share of people. And not very empathetic. And these are the things that I’m working on now. It definitely took me awhile to realize that I’m not the center of the universe.

Did your off-Broadway show Punk Rock help in that way?
Sure, I think Punk Rock had an effect.

2015-06-03-1433348599-5262989-pico2.jpg

Let’s talk about What I Did Last Summer. Who do you play?
I play Ted. He’s a local boy, a Canadian. He can be a little bit of a rowdy influence and he’s a friend of Charlie, the protagonist. Charlie meets Anna Trumble who is a bit of an outcast and eccentric and she taps into his potential and tells him that he has a gift and he has to work on finding out what it is. She unlocks that for him and he goes and finds out there is more to life than what he originally thought.

Do you have a pre-show ritual?
We pretty much just lose it back there in the dressing room. It’s me, Noah Galvin, and Dan Weiner our drummer. We all share the dressing room, get hyped up, and listen to music.

I saw that you played a young Joe Carroll in FOX’s The Following. What was it like being on set?
The scene was a lot bigger beforehand. There was a fish in the scene and the character Doctor Strauss puts the fish on the table and its flopping around and the Doctor wants to illustrate to Joe that he’s enraptured by it. Which was super interesting because, by law, you are only allowed to take a fish out of water for 20 seconds at a time. So we had a dude standing by with a bucket who would constantly interrupt the scene and grab the fish and throw it in the bucket and take another fish and put it on the table.

I read online that you want to swim with sharks. Is that right?
Yeah, I’d love to swim with sharks! Sharknado. A bit of a metaphor for wanting to risk it all in a way.

What are some of your hobbies?
I’m writing a lot lately. And I’m very fascinated with my dreams. I’m taking a sober year this year. I had a crazy experience at the end of last year. I was away on a small island with my family and I swam in this bio-luminescent bay and thought – it’s not going to get any better than this – and on the spot decided to try a year of sobriety as a challenge. Because of that, my dreams are so vivid this year. So I want to really focus on that unconscious self this year and connect with that self and see what it is that I truly want.

Do you meditate?
I meditate a little bit. Not as much as I’d like to.

One question I ask everyone: What’s one thing you would tell your 15 year old self?
To slow down. Listen. Observe. Help people. Help them up not push them down. And to be honest. High school is a really tough time for everybody and we don’t really understand that at the time. Be honest about your fears and your shortcomings. And just be nice.

What do you like best about yourself?
That’s crazy. I never think about that. It’s so easy to get wrapped up in melancholy. I think I like my honesty. I’ll ask people questions that might be uncomfortable but will also put myself one hundred percent out there. I’d rather fail than be mediocre.

Is there anything that you want people to know about you?
No. He laughs. I’m always weary of putting anything in writing because it’s always changing. If I had to choose, I would want them to know that I’m loyal.

Do you have any favorite quotes?
I like the quote “It is written” from The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho. Because it means it is what it is and everything is what it is and that’s ok.

Taking Pause and Tending to the Roses we Have Been Gifted

Stop and Smell the Roses

The House had The rose garden that the garden club ladies made mention of on many occasion. They tended to the urban myth that roses are impossible to care for unless you are deemed and esteemed, an expert. The promise of mold and strange bacterial fungi will ravage the gifts planted in 1908 that was bestowed upon me when the title papers were signed, if I did not take heed.

Thankfully I did not register what They, the astute members of the G Club were talking about or I may have reconsidered moving in. I was already wary to the tending of plants flowers and all that. I like them. I just never had a desire or a talent for tending to them. I did not come into this world with a curiosity or a passion nor develop the intellect for growing anything other than my three sweet peas now turned teens. What to do with the pressure? How do I keep the roses alive? Maybe hire an expert to tend to the thirty plus bushes now in my care?

For sheer self preservation, I decided not to listen for the time being. Nothing new-check out my early report cards. I collect two large baskets and pair of gloves and some clippers. In full bloom and nearly my height I breathe in their magnificence, for starters. I could get used to this. I hand crank the rusty -may need a tetanus shot-lever to start the water drip to the roots-evidently the water can’t spray directly on the roses and it must be done when the sun isn’t overtaking us. I had listened up a little. It’s 6 am and my people are all tucked in. I am bare foot in the dirt. I clip at leaf 5 or below-not remembering why this is the rule but it’s one of the ten thousand Rose Rules. I have a basket of dead roses and a basket to fill my house up with. Each morning I collect ten or more vases worth. I need more vases and more friends to share these beauties with. Each bush is unique. I loved to collect the rainbows and sort them out like I am mastering a painting-something new with each piece of rose art. They become my paints and my canvas. I fall in love with them, well most of them. I talk to them-mostly about my children and what I am up to that day or evening. It seems cat lady strange to say but I feel like they listen. I keep my tending simple so I keep on with it. Clip, chat and make rose art in as many vases as I can find.

I decide nothing chemical can touch this treasure of mine. I keep clipping and loving them and that is it. I am not holding my breathe for an invitation to the Garden Club-what would I have to offer them? I love my roses and I tend to them? That’s it. And they would have a list of the ten thousand to do’s I missed to do to tend them. I am not a good meeting go-er anyway.

Three bushes withered away by July. I am to blame-Professor Plum did it I wish to say-but no I did. I didn’t love them. I was not thankful for those lost treasures. They did not Lift me up-they had no scent and they didn’t feel like a part of our magical world. I really didn’t like those few bushes -I could not connect with them. I neglected them with my lack of attention and appreciation.

Funny how my rose garden became a little lab experiment. When we neglect having intention and thankfulness with our hearts toward something-it will wilt and eventually die. I was very very intentional when I met my next roses to fill the spaces of the gone bushes. We are quite famous for being the City of Roses so I spent hours up at our public gardens and breathed in and took photographs of the names of my favorites of this plethora of options-a bouquet buffet to chose from. I found the right ones and brought them home from the rose garden store place. Yes I play favorites with my roses, I can not help being more drawn to a color or fragrance, yet I do love them all now. And they thrive.

My simplistic tending routine brought me beauty and such peace that had escaped me in past days. I spent a decade racing around like a lunatic and now I get to do what my mamma always should-ed me to do-stop and smell the roses. And I did everyday from May through mid October. For ten years and now the baton has been passed once again. My roses Lifted me up with their beauty and their fragrance and their patience with my style of tending and appreciating.

Have you stopped and smelled the roses lately? How do you tend non conventionally to your garden ? Your life?

Natasha Lyonne on How Women Are Taking Over Comedy

Natasha Lyonne, director Jamie Babbit, and writer Karey Dornetto sat down with the What’s Trending team at this year’s South by Southwest festival to talk about their new film, “Fresno.” The conversation covered both Fresno the movie and the city, as well as the state of women in comedy today.

The film is a dark comedy about two sisters who work as hotel maids in the California city. You don’t see a lot of films set in Fresno, and apparently the city has been touchy on the topic.

“A lot of people were like, ‘Don’t mess with Fresno!'” Lyonne told us.

“I grew up in a terrible town called Cleveland,” Babbit said. “I grew up in an underdog city so I really responded to living in an armpit and wanting to get out. So when we decided to make the movie in California rather than Clevend, I thought about, ‘what is the Cleveland of California?'”

But movie title aside, the film is more about complicated women and the relationship between them. It’s a roll that “most women don’t get to play” according to Dornetto.

Lyonne describes it as “not apologizing for being sort of not thrilled with being alive.”

“I think when I see funny movies about women I get really excited.” Babbit said. “‘Bridesmaids’ really blew me away.”

“I loved that it was a movie about female friendships, which is something you don’t really see.” Babbit said. “We wanted to tell a movie about sisters who want to kill each other.”

On the subject of women in comedy, Lyonne said, “I think it’s such a great time for women in comedy. Amy Poehler and Lena Duham… there’s just so many exciting things going on right now.”

“I don’t know how men got the upper hand way back when,” Lyonne said. “It’s going to end and die soon. Hopefully some of them will stick around so we can use them for what we need them for. Reproduction and such.”

Paul Marciano Taking Guess Foundation to Italy

ITALIAN CAUSE: The Guess Foundation, which launched in Los Angeles in 1994, is coming to Italy this year. The organization aims to capitalize on the brand power of Guess fashion to push for greater sensitivity to violence against women, which Paul Marciano — Guess chief executive and creative director and Guess Foundation president — called “a social plague that unfortunately remains widespread.”
“We feel a specific duty to call the media’s attention to this problem in Italy, as well,” he added. According to 2014 statistics from the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights, 27 percent of Italian women have experienced physical or sexual violence, of which 19 percent is at the hands of a partner. The Guess Foundation is planning to mark Denim Day in Italy this spring, and to organize a series of special fundraisers in local Guess stores, with the first events tentatively slated for May or June. Popularized in the U.S., the Denim Day movement originated in Italy as a protest against a 1998 Italian Supreme Court ruling (since overturned) that an 18-year-old girl could not have been raped because she was wearing tight jeans, which were deemed too difficult for an assailant to remove without her assistance.

Emma Roberts Reveals Why She Loves Taking Off Her Makeup

When actress Emma Roberts isn’t making waves on FX’s “American Horror Story,” she’s probably pages-deep in her latest book obsession. If anything, you’ve probably seen her latest red carpet wins and her FOMO-worthy Instagram account.

We got the chance to catch up with the Neutrogena Brand Ambassador in New York City, where we talked all things beauty. And while Roberts loves the “idea of a strong brow, great lashes and a red lip,” she delved into a topic that’s been making its rounds in Hollywood lately: no makeup.

Growing up in the limelight, Roberts feels more comfortable in her own, natural skin. “I think I appreciate wearing no makeup than other people, because I have to wear it for work,” she begins, adding, “I really feel like myself and confident without makeup on.”

Roberts applies her no-makeup philosophy to other women, saying that the confidence she harbors from wiping off her mascara and foundation is “something that” she “thinks all girls should feel.” She attributes her thoughts to younger girls as well, highlighting her younger sister as a prime example. Roberts concludes “I just think it’s important to know that you look beautiful without makeup on,” adding that experimentation is great, too.

So, the next time you need an ego boost, it might come down to getting your makeup remover… or that untouched tube of lipstick.

Catch Emma Roberts on “American Horror Story,” which airs Wednesdays, 10 PM EST on FX.

Dear Medical Science: What’s Taking You So Long?

When I was a little kid, I had a lot of faith in you guys. Maybe I watched too many Star Trek episodes, but I figured by now — 50 years later — you’d have invented some miracle laser-like gizmo that could cure everything. The patient would lie down on a diagnostic bio-bed. Then the doctor would wave the gizmo over the illness-ridden body and — presto! — the affliction would magically vanish.

Where’s the gizmo, guys? We want the gizmo. Okay, forget the gizmo. I’ll settle for a Miracle Pill that does the same thing.

For decades we’ve been throwing money at you and, I hate to say it, I was kind of hoping for something more by now. Okay, I’m an impatient patient. Sue me.

That’s not to say you haven’t made some amazing advances. You’ve given us meds for cholesterol, ED, depression, AIDS, blood pressure and a host of other ailments; there are bionic hands, heart transplants, new vaccines, nerve regrowth, facial reconstruction, MRIs, laparoscopy and a whole lot more.

But, to cite a few examples, you still can’t cure Alzheimer’s; cancer, in all it’s many delightful forms, still mystifies you; you haven’t put the kibosh on multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s, diabetes or heart disease; hell, you haven’t even rid the planet of hemorrhoids yet.

Guys, we don’t want to go through all that suffering anymore. We’re sick of getting sick. It’s the 21st Century. Stem cells were discovered in 1978. You promised us limitless possibilities, yet here we are, 36 years later, still twiddling our thumbs.

Here’s how primitive we still are: Kidney patients still have to be hooked up to washing machines; basal cell carcinomas still have to be dug out by hand; skulls still have to be drilled to get to brain tumors; casts are still used for broken limbs; we still repair wounds with thread or staples; tooth extractions still require a set of pliers; amputations still involve saws; hoses explore our digestive systems; we still use catheters (the last major improvement was the flexible catheter, invented by Benjamin Franklin in 1752, hello.)

Let’s take cancer. If you are unlucky enough to get pancreatic, ovarian or lung cancer, you can pretty much put a down payment on a tombstone. After decades of research, here’s what we have in the arsenal: surgery, radiation and chemotherapy.

Not very impressive guys. Surgery is still horrible no matter how you… um… cut it; radiation is… well… radiation. Then there’s the wonder of chemotherapy (invented in the 1940s.) Good job there, fellas. Poison the victim and hope that the cancer succumbs and the patient survives. What a breakthrough. Remember the old medical practice of bleeding patients to cure them of just about everything? Today, we ridicule that boneheaded procedure as hopelessly medieval. Ha ha. Guess what? A hundred years from now, scientists will get a huge guffaw out of chemo.

Where are the Pasteurs, Flemings and Salks of yesteryear? If it had taken the estimable Dr. Salk as long as it takes you, half the world’s population would still think the iron lung is a marvel of ingenuity.

Here’s what really bothers me: Everyday we read about your latest earthshattering breakthroughs. “Scientists Build Liver Out of Stem Cells!” “Scientists Solve Mystery of Aging!” “Researchers Discover New Drug that Shrinks Tumors!” Wow, I say excitedly. Finally.

Then what happens? Nothing. It seems as if none of these exciting new medical miracles ever make it from the lab to the hospital. They just seem to… disappear. We never hear about them again. What happened? Was it all just optimism? Is there a need to publish something to justify the investment? Is the FDA dragging its feet? Is Big Pharma quashing them? Are the rats faking it? What?

All I know is that my internist did not offer me a new liver the last time I saw him, not that I need one. Yet.

The Spirit of the Marshall Plan: Taking Action Against World Hunger, School Lunches for Kids Around the World

The Spirit of the Marshall Plan: Taking Action Against World Hunger, School Lunches for Kids Around the World

Invoking the same spirit that fueled the Marshall Plan to rebuild Europe, author William Lambers calls for a global school lunch program to fight child hunger. 300 million children suffer from hunger worldwide. School lunch programs fight child hunger and also boost school attendance and performance. This book highlights the use of school lunch programs in Europe following World War II and how they can be used today in countries like Afghanistan, Kenya, Guatemala and Sudan. The future of these nations depends on a nourished and educated youth. Special attention is given to the work of charities such as Food for the Poor, Childslife International and the World Food Program. Supporting the U.S. government McGovern-Dole Food for Education program is seen as key to ensuring every child around the globe can receive a school lunch. McGovern-Dole helps fund the work of the World Food Program, Catholic Relief Services and other organizations that carry out school lunch programs in developing countries.

Taking a Hard Look at What’s Important: Validating our Values

When someone asks what our values are, we can probably start listing things that seem important to us in life right away. These things will determine how we assess our level of success, and so getting them right is very important.

However, as we eagerly list those values we may not quite as readily step back to decide which of those are actually ours and not ones that have been handed to us over the years. These ‘hand-me-down’ values are still very valid, so much so, that by now making that distinction may seem like a bit of a struggle.

I first noticed this when talking to students at the business school about their careers, goals and aspirations. What they considered to be important to them as they thought about their new post MBA lives was strikingly similar. It made sense; a set of like minded, highly driven individuals with similar backgrounds were likely to have common values. But equally, they were also very different people, and though I didn’t get this information the first time, after a bit of prodding I found out that:

Jo, had lost his father when young and grown up in a small home in Kansas, Peter was dealing with huge financial burdens and was born and raised in London, and Emily came from a long line of doctors in Kenya and was breaking away from her family tradition to pursue her dreams of becoming an entrepreneur. So, I pushed further and asked about their backgrounds and what that meant in terms of who they wanted to be, and how they defined success.

Soon the validation started trickling in,

I mean sure, when I say making an impact, of course I am talking much more than money.

When I said I’d never move back to Kansas, I mean I guess, if my mother needed me to, I would… It’s actually not so bad.

Hearing the students start to modify that initial checklist inspired me to do the same. Which of the values I held most dearly were ones I actively chose? It made me think about how far away from my Mediterranean origin I had come, and more so about the fact that I never really chose a fast paced, big city lifestyle, but yet here I was, allowing the city to define what success meant to me.

While we busily chase what everyone else chases, and make comparisons based on selective information through things like social media, it may be hard to really take the time to examine what really matters to us, personally. It gets even harder if it directly conflicts with what matters to those around us, or more accurately what appears to matter. I suppose we can call this, ‘value pressure.’

For the business students it was as important as ever to perform that validation, as they thought about their future careers and continued to define success for themselves, but I worried that might not happen. What I also realized was that we are all at risk of pursuing a path assuming it will define success for us. Without taking the time and being flexible enough to examine those values constantly and checking to see which hold true, and which lost value along the way, we may stop really remembering or trusting what we believe. It is then that we risk that all the effort we put into our endeavors, career and projects lead us down a path where our values just aren’t valid.
