Eco-Age Announces Finalists for Emerging Talent Prize

GREEN SHOOTS: Livia Firth’s brand consultancy Eco-Age gathered industry figures, including Italian Chamber of Fashion president Carlo Capasa, entrepreneur Carmen Busquets and British Vogue editor in chief Edward Enninful, on the sidelines of Paris Couture Week to select the five finalists of its talent competition for emerging designers.
The 13 jury members met in a makeshift conference room in a stuffy apartment on Tuesday to look at the work of 10 shortlisted designers. The finalists will attend the second edition of The Green Carpet Fashion Awards, to be held on Sept. 23 at La Scala at the end of Milan Fashion Week.
The winner of the Franca Sozzani GCC Emerging Designer Award will have the opportunity to present at Milan Fashion Week in February, supported by the Italian Chamber of Fashion.
In addition, they will benefit from a one-year mentorship program with outlet center operator Value Retail, which runs 11 outlets under the heading of Bicester Village Shopping Collection. Their collections will be featured in The Creative Spot, a platform dedicated to showcase new talents at Fidenza Village, just outside of Milan.
The finalists are Gilberto Calzolari, whose look was created using jute coffee bags from Brazil; Teatum Jones, who created a dress made

Fashion Trust Arabia Supports Local Talent with New Prize Initiative

LONDON — As the Arab fashion industry continues to gain ground, a new charitable venture, Fashion Trust Arabia, is being launched and it’s spearheading a new prize initiative to support local design talent through mentorship and funding.
The initiative, which follows on the footsteps of the British Fashion Council’s Fashion Trust, will be chaired by Sheikha Moza Bint Nasser and co-chaired by Sheikha al- Mayassa Bint Hamad Al- Thani and Tania Fares, founder of the Fashion Trust in the U.K.
A wide range of local and international business and fashion leaders are said to participate in the new venture, joining its executive committee or judging panel and mentoring participating designers. Fashion Trust Arabia is yet to announce its committee members.
The launch of the prize aims to coincide with the increased interest in the growth potential of the region’s fashion industry, to support local talent that has so far been operating under-the-radar and spark investment opportunities.
Earlier this year, the Arab Fashion Council – which is now headquartered in Saudi Arabia – also announced a partnership with the British Fashion Council and hosted the first Arab Fashion Week in Riyadh, in a bid to develop a sustainable fashion infrastructure across the Arab world and create new revenue

Jonathan Anderson Hosts New Talent Photography Exhibition

FRESH FACES: “It is scary to do this because it is sort of like a massive administration nightmare,” said Jonathan Anderson at the launch of his photography exhibition in London on Thursday. “But I’m really proud of it.”
Anderson was referring to the myriad photos that flooded into his studio after he made an open call for young photographers to submit work as part of his spring-summer 2018 campaign.
As reported, he wanted members of the public to submit pictures in his bid to promote future image-makers, with the slogan Your picture/Our future. He received about 1,000 submissions, ranging from portraiture to landscapes to abstract images.
The end result is a show that Anderson curated at 13 Floral Street, a gallery in Covent Garden. Titled “Your picture/Our future,” it includes 200 images from 50 contributors. A winner will be named on Friday and that person will be the one to shoot Anderson’s next campaign.
During the exhibition Anderson said it was great meeting different people and listening to their stories about why they wanted to become photographers. “I always see J.W. as some sort of cultural agitator,” said Anderson. “So it fits in. I think everyone here is fantastic.”
He said the highlight “is actually

Teen On ‘America’s Got Talent’ Brings The Tears As She Performs For Her Father With Cancer

You’ll need all the tissues you can find watching Evie Clair’s performance from Tuesday night’s “America’s Got Talent.”

While onstage, the 13-year-old singer tearfully revealed that part of the reason she’s performing is for her dad, who was diagnosed with colon cancer about a year ago.

The audience was in tears even before Clair sang one note of Christina Perri’s “Arms,” a song she sings to her father when he’s going through rough days. When she started singing, and shots of her family watching offstage appeared on screen, it was just too much.

Just try not to cry all over your keyboard. Then you’ll be sobbing for other reasons.

12-Year-Old Ventriloquist Blows Away ‘America’s Got Talent’

Before performing on Tuesday’s “America’s Got Talent,” a nervous and giggly Darci Lynne Farmer told the judges that she “would really like to keep ventriloquism alive because it’s not common, you know?”

The 12-year-old from Oklahoma City then did her part in a big way. As Farmer provided the skillfully hidden vocals, her puppet rabbit Petunia belted out a dazzling “Summertime.” The duo earned wows from the panelists and host Tyra Banks (making her “AGT” debut) before Mel B. pushed the Golden Buzzer to vault Farmer into the live show round.

A well-deserved happy ending.

Why Silicon Beach will still lure tech talent despite skyrocketing prices

Why Silicon Beach will still lure tech talent despite skyrocketing pricesOver the last two years, Venice has become one of the priciest neighborhoods in all of Los Angeles, thanks in part to the success of companies headquartered there like Snap. The new season of HBO’s “Silicon Valley” premieres this month, but the Bay Area tech scene depicted on that show is no longer the only game in town for America’s tech elite. Los Angeles has its own tech hub, dubbed Silicon Beach, a four-mile stretch of beachfront that encompasses Venice and Santa Monica and is home to Snapchat’s parent company, Snap (SNAP).

“After Words” Showcases Marcia Gay Harden’s Talent

Movie Review – Jackie K Cooper
“After Words” (Level 33 Entertainment)

Marcia Gay Harden can do no wrong. Any role she undertakes ends up being a special one just because of her talent, charm and charisma. In her latest film “After Words”, she portrays a single woman in her forties who is at the end of her rope. She has a plan to end her life but delays it until after a trip to Costa Rica. Watching Harden go from a beaten plain Jane to a woman on the cusp of a wonderful life makes for grand movie entertainment.

Jane (Harden) is a librarian in Los Angeles, going through the motions of her life but without any real enthusiasm about it. When her employment is terminated due to a downturn in the economy she takes her savings and splurges on a trip to Costa Rica. Suddenly Jane is a woman with a plan. She will go to a foreign land and while there she will end her sad, dull life.

Juan (Oscar Jaenada) is a man whose life does have purpose. He works to earn enough money to provide his daughter Anna (Jenna Ortega) with some of the good things of life. This particularly means an education at an American school in Costa Rica. He sees this as a way to guarantee her the best opportunities possible. It is expensive but Juan is willing to do what it takes to keep Anna there.

What Juan sometimes does is act as a tour guide. And sometimes his tour guide service provides the older ladies who hire him with something extra in the romance department. When Juan spies Jane he sees a perfect client. The rest of the movie focuses on the effect Juan has on Jane and Jane has on Juan.

Director Juan Feldman paces his story perfectly. The friendship between these two flawed human beings takes time to come to fruition. Juan is friendly and charming but it will take more than that to change Jane’s plans to end it all. Plus there is always the possibility the time in Costa Rica will be the perfect note on which to end it all.

Harden’s Jane is a character who sticks with you after the movie ends. She has many transitions and all are played with truth and believability. Jaenada’s Juan is the perfect counterpoint to her depressing aura. He is so alive, and so eager to please that it would be a crime not to enjoy his world. You certainly are able to see what he sees in her and what she sees in him.

This movie is a romantic fantasy and it must be accepted as that to be enjoyed. You can quibble that someone of Jane’s age must have some friends and/or relatives. You can also nitpick that protected hearts can not open up to adventure so quickly. But if you go with the flow and just accept the story as presented you will have a grand time with it.

The film is not rated.

“After Words” is similar to an old Katherine Hepburn film titled “Summertime”. In it she played a “spinster” on a European vacation who finds love. Hepburn made it all believable and Harden does too. So immerse yourself in the beauty of the Costa Rica setting and let your heart open up to a romantic fantasy.

I scored “After Words” a holiday 6 out of 10.

Levi’s Taps Local Talent for Berlin Store

PERSONAL TOUCH: Levi’s has collaborated with local talents for the first time to celebrate the reopening of its Berlin flagship store on Kurfürstendamm.
For two weeks starting March 30, classics like Trucker Jackets and 501 jeans personalized by young designers Bobby Kolade, Malaikaraiss and Sopopular will be on display in the Levi’s store – Germany’s largest.
Customizing has been part of Levi’s DNA from the outset. The brand’s jeans were personalized by 19th-century miners and Fifties Rockabillies, for instance. But repair and customizing services only entered into the corporate strategy in 2010 with the Levi’s Tailor Shops in European flagships.
The company plans to open such shops in all of its major European stores and intensify collaborations with local designers.
“We want to work more with Berlin talents,” said a Levi’s spokesman. “The city has always been a symbol of freedom and subversion — attributes inherent to our brand.”
