10 (Unintentionally) Terrifying Video Games

Video games can be plenty scary. I’ve thrown my controller in the air and screamed with unadulterated terror at survival-horror jump scares and felt my guts twist at the powerful manipulation of psychological terror in the hands of gaming’s storytelling masters. Games like Resident Evil, Silent Hill, and PT all contain the stuff nightmares are made of.

But sometimes, games are scary not so much by design as by accident. Here are 10 games from well outside the horror genre that succeed far more than they should at being deeply disturbing.

WATCH: Kim Zolciak-Biermann Breaks Down Recounting Son’s Terrifying Dog Bite: ‘I Was Literally Shaking’

“I was literally shaking.”

That’s how Kim Zolciak-Biermann describes the moment she learned about the frightening dog bite that nearly blinded her son.

The 39-year-old mother of six documents the aftermaths of Kash’s bite on Friday’s episode of her Bravo reality series Don’t Be Tardy, and PEOPLE has the exclusive first look.

Kim retells the story of what happened as she and husband Kroy Biermann drive Kash to one of his follow-up doctor appointments, just days after the April 22 attack.

“Before you know it, we’re walking to the ,” Kim says, breaking down in tears. “I knew the severity of it when my husband had tears streaming down his face. And I was like, ‘Kroy, just tell me.’ And he was like, ‘It’s going to be fine. It’s just going to be fine.’ And then they said, ‘He’s got to go to surgery right now.’ ”

Kroy was equally emotional, crying when he recalled what it was like while Kash was in surgery.

“I sat there not knowing whether my son was going to be able to see for probably about seven hours,” he says of Kash, who was ultimately in the hospital for four days, the scratch a millimeter away from his eye, and has now nearly fully recovered. “So, that news came — that was a very uplifting moment. To know that no matter what, he’s still going to have the same quality of life that he had before he got bit.”

“He’s got the best daddy ever,” Kim gushes of Kroy. “He woke up and the first thing he did was reach for his daddy’s hand.

RELATED: Kim Zolciak-Biermann and Son Kash’s Dog Attack Drama: A Timeline

On Wednesday, Kim and Kroy revealed exclusively to PEOPLE the details of Kash’s bite — including the fact that their dog Sinn was the one who bit Kash. The two were playing outside alongside the Biermanns’ other son KJ, 6, when Kroy was using a leaf blower to clean the yard and a nervous Sinn nipped at Kash.

Looking back on it to PEOPLE, Kroy says he’s still coming to terms with what happened. “It’s a process every day,” Kroy explains. “Being right there, it was just wrong place, wrong time, wrong circumstances. The perfect storm. Had one thing been different, it wouldn’t have happened. You try to say, ‘What would I have done differently?’ And there are a lot of things. now, but you can’t change any of it. You just have to learn from it and grow from it.”

RELATED VIDEO: Inside Kim Zolciak-Biermann and Kroy Biermann’s Tough Decision to Keep the Dog Who Bit Their Son

The decision to keep Sinn didn’t come easy. The Biermanns had rescued Sinn, husky-boxer mix, as a puppy three years earlier.

“I hated Sinn,” Kroy said. “I genuinely felt a deep rage for what he had done to my son. … I love my dog, and nothing like this had ever happened to me before. But it’s my son. I don’t love anything more than my flesh and blood. I thought, ‘I don’t want to see the dog — he doesn’t get a second chance.”

But it was Kash’s “incredible bond” with Sinn and a hope to prevent him from having phobias that led to their final decision to keep him.  “If Kash ever looked at me and said that he didn’t want to be around Sinn or showed any hesitation, then he wouldn’t be here,” Kim stressed. “We love Sinn, he’s part of our family, but our children will always come first without a doubt.”

For more on Kim Zolciak-Biermann and Kroy Biermann, pick up this week’s issue of PEOPLE, on newsstands now.

Now back in the home with a new routine — including a locked crate, private fenced in dog run, and constant supervision — the Biermanns are sharing their story in the hopes that dog owners know the signs to look out for if their pets are being aggressive.

“We’ve taught our kids, no matter how nice dogs are, they are capable of anything and cannot communicate to us in another way than through action — be it barking, growling, biting, scratching, or running away,” Kroy says. “A child sees flurry, fluffy, fun, slobbery … they don’t see danger. And we didn’t either, as adults who had always owned dogs but never gone through something like this. But you have to understand those triggers. Whether it’s loud noise, their tail being pulled, whatever it is, it should be on the forefront of everybody’s mind. Not as fear, but just awareness.”

Don’t Be Tardy airs Fridays (9 p.m. ET) on Bravo.

Pennywise vs. the Joker: It’s Bill Skarsgard Compares and Contrasts His Terrifying Performance to Heath Ledger’s

They both played infamously evil clowns, but It’s Bill Skarsgard sees some major differences between his Pennywise and Heath Ledger’s Joker from The Dark Knight.

“I think the biggest difference between Pennywise and the Joker character — or at least Heath Ledger’s interpretation — is that he’s far more based in reality,” Skarsgard, 27, tells PEOPLE.

“ is sort of this social anarchist, crazy person, and I don’t think Pennywise is the same in that way. He’s not even human, he’s just pure evil,” he adds.

The boyishly handsome Skarsgard, son of acclaimed actor Stellan, and younger brother to fellow actors Gustav and Alexander, is unrecognizable as Stephen King’s Pennywise the Dancing Clown from his 1987 novel It.

In the book, which gained further popularity after it was adapted into a 1990 TV series starring Tim Curry, Pennywise is an otherworldly force of evil that feeds on children in the fictional town of Derry, Maine.

But Ledger’s Joker in The Dark Knight had bigger plans than just eating and scaring the bejeezus out of little kids. His version of the Batman villain, which earned him a posthumous Oscar, was hellbent on creating chaos, upsetting the social order and of course, killing “the Batman.”

For Skarsgard, Pennywise’s motivations are “less crazy” than the Joker’s plan to turn an entire city against itself. Not that his clown is a jolly Bozo either: “Of course, Pennywise is still dark and sinister — and he’s going after kids.”

While the characters have their differences, both Ledger and Skarsgard worked tirelessly to transform themselves. “Where I went with it was like, ‘What’s the most horrible thing that could happen here?’ And then I’d do that,” Skarsgard explains. “You need to access parts of yourself where you’re thinking about what’s the most disturbing or horrifying , and then you have to commit to that.”

Skarsgard admits he had nightmares for weeks after It wrapped, saying, “It was very strange, it was almost like a really slow exorcism to completely let go of him.”

After Ledger’s death in 2008 from an accidental prescription drug overdose, rumors abounded that he “was taken down this dark spiral path to the depths of depression from his role as the Joker,” as I Am Heath Ledger producer and co-director Derik Murray told USA Today.

But his family and friends have vehemently dismissed the rumor. “Honestly, that’s been the biggest thing for us as a family,” Kate Ledger, Heath’s older sister, told the outlet. “He had an amazing sense of humor and certainly playing the Joker, for him it was one big gag. He had so much fun doing that. It was actually the exact opposite. There was no doom and gloom. … That was a shock to me that people even thought that, really.”

Despite Skarsgard’s bad dreams, he says, “I did have so much fun with the character, and I’m really looking forward to getting back under that clown makeup for the sequel.”

See the Terrifying Moment Kim Zolciak-Biermann Learned About Her Son’s Dog Attack

It’s every parents’ nightmare, and watching Kim Zolciak-Biermann experience it is heartbreaking.

In April, the mother of six revealed her 5-year-old son Kash was hospitalized and in danger of losing sight in his left eye after being mauled by a dog.

Four months and multiple surgeries later, the young boy is healthy and healed — even getting a pit bull puppy last week for his birthday. But watching back the footage of the moment Kim learned of the attack will send shivers down the spines of Bravo viewers everywhere.

The moment comes in the season 6 trailer of Don’t Be Tardy… — Bravo’s hit reality series that follows the Real Housewives of Atlanta star, her husband Kroy Biermann and their six children as they navigate family life.

“We got to go to the hospital!,” Kim screams in the clip, which PEOPLE is premiering exclusively — the Biermanns’ home security footage capturing Kash wrapped in his mother’s arms as she races through their house for the car.

“Kroy, there’s a major problem!” she yells, later shouting in the hospital, “Somebody better take care of my son!”

It’s a tough scene, but just some of the drama coming for viewers this season.

Daughters Brielle, 20, and Ariana, 15 have their own blow-ups — Brielle fighting with her father over wanting to move in with baseball player boyfriend Michael Kopech. “You now you Kroy is, he’s f—— crazy,” Brielle tells her 21-year-old beau. “I’m 20, they don’t control what I can do.”

Kroy seems to think otherwise, telling Brielle, “You don’t need to be moving in with Michael. I’m done playing your game.”

Ariana is in trouble too after being caught on security cameras sneaking out of the house. “We have to be able to trust you,” Kroy tells her as she tears up. “I don’t know how you’re going to earn that back.”

If that weren’t enough, things get really tense when Brielle attempts to reconnect with Kim’s estranged parents, whom she hasn’t seen in six years. “I don’t like hating these people,” she says.

There will be happy moments too, of course. Chef Tracey is still cooking up amusing antics while getting her house remodeled thanks to the Biermanns.

And showing they’re forever in love, Kim and Kroy decide to renew their vows on a tropical vacation with the whole family, including KJ, 6, and twins Kaia and Kane, 3.

“From laughter to tears, I can honestly say that I’ve loved you every step of the way,” Kroy says in his vows.

Don’t Be Tardy…‘s double episode season 6 premiere airs Oct. 6 (8 p.m. ET) on Bravo.

James Corden Reveals His ‘Quite Terrifying’ Recurring Nightmare

Is James Corden afraid of the ocean? That or his sleeping subconscious might be trying to tell him something.

The Emmy-nominated Late Late Show host joined PEOPLE’s Editor-in-Chief Jess Cagle in the latest episode of The Jess Cagle Interview (streaming now on the People/Entertainment Weekly Network) and revealed a few deep dark secrets — namely that he has a scary, chronic nightmare.

“My recurring nightmare is that I’m in the middle of the ocean, and no one knows I’m there, and I don’t know what to do,” Corden said. “We’re joking about it now, but it genuinely is quite terrifying.”

Cagle also asked Corden about the one thing he wishes he could do on TV, the celebrity he’d most like to kiss and what keeps him up at night.

“The one thing that I wish I was allowed to do on television but I’m not is call in sick with no repercussions,” Corden said. “If I had to kiss one celebrity right now, it would be John Mayer because, you know, it just sounds like it’s fantastic.”

And while Corden admitted that his kids (daughter Carey, 2½, and son Max McCartney, 6) keep him up at night, overall his life is good — especially since his wife Julia is expecting their third child.

“If life’s not good right now, how’s it ever going to get better than this?” he said. “It’s amazing.”

The Late Late Show with James Corden airs weeknights (12:35 a.m. ET) on CBS.

Terrifying And Ambiguous, ‘It Comes At Night’ Sculpts A Tale Of Apocalyptic Tensions

Horror movies are often bathed in red. Blood oozes from the Overlook Hotel’s elevator in “The Shining.” A crimson-cloaked figure stalks the central family in “Don’t Look Now.” Freddy Krueger’s “Nightmare on Elm Street” sweater matches the tint of his victims’ gore. The sludge pits in “The Descent” are speckled with a foreboding scarlet.

It Comes at Night,” opening in theaters this weekend, brandishes a red door at the end of a slender hallway. The only portal leading in and out of an isolated home in the woods, it provides security and alarm. Open it at the wrong moment, and whatever apocalyptic sickness that’s seized the world could seep in. Keep it closed, and resources will run out.

Equal parts family drama and end-times horror feast, Trey Edward Shults’ first film with professional actors ― following last year’s superb micro-budget psychodrama “Krisha,” which starred the 28-year-old director’s relatives ― is a boiling, 91-minute labyrinth that grows more ominous by the minute. Fuse the simmering paranoia of “The Witch,” the post-apocalyptic dread of “Night of the Living Dead” and the domestic tension of “The Others,” and you’ll get “It Comes at Night.”

“I actually didn’t read it as a horror at all,” Christopher Abbott told HuffPost at the movie’s junket earlier this week. “When I read it, I though it was a heavy family drama with some creepy moments.”

Abbott and Riley Keough play a desperate couple seeking shelter after their truck breaks down. Fleeing an epidemic that’s never detailed, they land at a home sporting boarded windows and a skeptical family that doesn’t leave once the sun sets. The latter clan ― played by Joel Edgerton, Carmen Ejogo and standout newcomer Kelvin Harrison Jr. ― are the narrative’s spine. They don’t know exactly what’s happened to the world, but they’ve entered full-blown panic mode. Their house, their rules. No one exits alone, the red door remains locked, gas masks are mandatory whenever potential threats loom. There’s always something lurking beyond that door, at least in their minds.

“Who told him to put a gas mask on? No one,” Harrison said, referring to Edgerton’s patriarch, Paul, who is hell-bent on protecting his wife and 17-year-old son. “They decided that on their own, and that’s what’s kind of messed up about it. Is anyone actually sick?”

Characters break these rules as often as they keep them. What resonates is not the apocalyptic trivia ― it’s how everyone deals with it. Delusions. Hallucinations. Knee-jerk reactions.

Like the best ambiguous horror tales, “It Comes at Night” conceals enough information to send its audiences down similar paranoia spirals. Paul agrees to house this rogue family, but are they trustworthy? Will teenage Travis’ voyeuristic interest in the couple align with his burgeoning, inhibited sexuality? Will whatever vague peril haunting the forest that surrounds the house infiltrate the families’ newfound shared domesticity?

The script, written at the start of 2014, “spewed out of” Shults after his semi-estranged father died. Through this story of two clans processing their hysteria, Shults processed his grief. A cinephile completing a two-picture deal with trendy indie studio A24, Shults channeled some of his favorite movies ― “There Will Be Blood,” “A Woman Under the Influence,” “The Shining,” David Lynch’s catalog ― in developing the stylistic menace suffused throughout “It Comes at Night,” shot in upstate New York. He knows some viewers will be frustrated by the lack of finite information about the disease that may have seized civilization, but he hopes the film will play like the aforementioned gems: richer, deeper and more meaningful upon second and third encounters. In the meantime, horror stalwarts will be treated to a production that expands the genre’s finest tropes into a coming-of-age trance built on nightmares, yearning and that sinister red door.

“I love movies that have an openness, movies that don’t sum up everything for me,” Shults said. “[With time], I see different things about them or I interpret them in a different way. That’s my jam. I think this movie is intentionally designed that way. There’s some tough subject matter in it.”

It Comes at Night” is now in theaters.

Terrifying Tornado Gives Couple A Proposal Story They’ll Never Forget

A storm chaser in Texas used a terrifying tornado as the perfect backdrop to a proposal.

Alex Bartholomew popped the question to girlfriend Britney Fox Cayton near McLean on Tuesday, as a twister struck the ground about a mile away. Fortunately, she said yes.

Bartholomew shared photographs on Facebook of the couple’s epic engagement, with the tornado visible in the background. They are now going viral:

”I was completely overjoyed when he asked me and could not help having tears in my eyes,” Cayton told HuffPost on Thursday. “I almost forgot about the tornado behind us because all I could see was him and how happy I felt in that moment.”

The two 25-year-olds have been together for just over 18 months. “He’s a storm chaser but I’ve been fascinated by it since we started dating,” Cayton said. “He’s been taking me out with him every chance we’ve had since.”

Bartholomew wrote on Facebook that he was “elated,” “ecstatic” and “overjoyed” at Cayton’s answer. “I seriously couldn’t ask for a better life and I can’t wait to spend it with her by my side,” he added.

The Tornado Intercept page on Facebook also shared footage of the memorable proposal online:

22 Terrifying and Magical Capabilities Someone Has When You Fall For Them

Love is terrifying, and terror is love.

How exceptional is falling in love? How breathtakingly incredible? How painful and enchanted it is to have your heart opened. It presents so many chances for overwhelming pain, and also for captivating joy. It’s a double-edged sword that can release your innermost desires and also your deepest fears.

Oh, love. How petrifying and wondrous is the single most infinite component of human life. Here are 22 powers your beloved has when you first fall for them:

  1. They see who you really are. Your insecurities and flaws lie exposed like an open wound.
  2. They want you, regardless. You know that what you see as ugliness is lovable to them. You know you’re perfectly imperfect to them, and few things in life match that comfort.
  3. They can leave you and you know you’ll feel a little lost if they do.
  4. They can stay. They can be there when no one else is.
  5. They can hold you back in life when you focus too much on them.
  6. They can support and push you. They can directly aid in the pursuit of your dreams.
  7. They have expectations for you that you could not be able to meet, and you worry you could become a disappointment.
  8. You could fulfill every hope of theirs and then some. You could be gratifying and refreshing in all that you are.
  9. They could be unfaithful to you and embarrass you.
  10. They’re choosing you and only you. Being with you means they want you. You’re wanted solely and exclusively, which is worth the risk.
  11. They can hurt you.
  12. They can heal you.
  13. They can expose and exploit you.
  14. They can listen to and keep every one of your secrets. They can be your safe home and endless confidant.
  15. They can take you from the people in your life.
  16. They can encourage you to spend time with the people you love, and also introduce you to new and exciting people.
  17. They can painfully reject your opinions and beliefs.
  18. They can open your mind to new perspectives.
  19. They can easily break you down.
  20. They can easily build you up.
  21. Everything could change.
  22. Or, they can change everything.
