Universal Standard Tests Same-Day Delivery with AC Survival Collection

The blanket of humidity that has enveloped much of the east coast this week has made the air-conditioned office life not such a bad place to be. But for some cubicle dwellers the indoor chill is only bearable to a point.
More than a century after the father of modern air-conditioning Willis H. Carrier finessed the first centrifugal refrigeration machine, Universal Standard has developed a way to fend off the freeze. The size-inclusive e-tailer has introduced an “AC Survival Collection,” to highlight its versions of the perfect summer sweaters. New York City consumers who order one of the options before noon can have those essentials messengered to their desks by 5 p.m. at no extra cost.
The concept also provided a way to test same-day delivery, according to cofounder Alexandra Waldman. Estimating that 100 orders would be a good showing in New York City for Thursday’s sales, the response of nearly 300 orders was a welcome surprise. “We had thought, ‘If this works, maybe we will try it a few more times and make it a regular option for our customers,’” Waldman said.
Universal Standard now plans to continue the test, due to Thursday’s success. The brand’s suggestions include the Curve Cardi in black,

Soludos Tests Physical Retail Concept

Internet-native shoe brand Soludos has opened its first physical store.
The pop-up — located in New York’s SoHo shopping district at 25 Prince Street — will remain open through October.
With an espadrille-heavy offering, Soludos is primarily regarded as a summer shoe brand — hence the label’s decision to leverage the season to test its first retail concept. The brand was founded in 2010.
In the coming months, it will host events at the boutique as well as various digital activations throughout New York.
Soludos founder and chief executive officer Nick Brown said of the endeavor: “As a digital brand, we wanted to extend Soludos into a tactile experience where our customers can experience the product first-hand. We were patient with our growth, and feel this is the perfect time to move forward with a brick-and-mortar experience. The Summer Shoppe opened its doors in time for shoppers to buy for the summer season and are thrilled to give our customers a chance to see the design details and fabrics in real life.”

The Real Real Tests Beauty

The Real Real is testing beauty.
The luxury resale e-commerce site — which operates a brick-and-mortar location in Manhattan’s SoHo and a pop-up in Las Vegas — has quietly added beauty products to its assortment. Industry sources say the products have been available for sale in the SoHo store since the holiday season, and they are sold in the Las Vegas outpost as well.
“We are testing a curated selection of beauty products both online and in our brick-and-mortar locations with the goal of really completing the customer journey,” said Rati Levesque, chief merchant at The Real Real. “We want luxury consumers to view us as a trusted destination to find the most covetable selection of luxury products across all categories from clothing and to beauty. Right now we are in the early stages but plan to invest more heavily in the category in coming months.”
Contrary to The Real Real’s consignment-based business model, the beauty products being sold are new, sources say. Brands being sold are of the clean beauty variety, in line with The Real Real’s sustainable luxury positioning. They include Pai Skincare, Rahua, Ellis Brooklyn, Babo Botanicals, Joanna Vargas, In Fiore, Maison Louis Marie, Kahina Giving Beauty, Olio E Osso,

Usain Bolt Stripped of Olympic Gold Medal After Teammate Tests Positive for Doping

The fastest man in the world was stripped of one of his nine Olympic gold medals after a teammate tested positive for a banned substance.

Usain Bolt‘s Jamaican teammate, Nesta Carter, is disqualified from the 4×100 relay that nabbed gold at the 2008 Beijing Olympics due to his positive doping test, the IOC announced Wednesday.

Carter, 31, was one of 454 selected doping samples re-tested by the IOC last year, and his sample has been found to contain a banned stimulant called methylhexaneamine, reports the BBC.

Bolt, 30, had achieved the “triple treble” (winning the 100m, 200m and 4×100 relay at the three Olympics he competed in), an accomplishment unmatched by any other Olympian in history, according to Sports Illustrated

Trinidad & Tobago will be awarded the 2008 relay gold, with Japan receiving an upgrade to silver and Brazil getting the bronze.

Gap Tests Room Service in Virgin Hotels Chicago

ORDERING IN: Gap room service?
The specialty chain is testing a free delivery service for guests at the new Virgin Hotels Chicago which opened last January, becoming the first property up and running in Richard Branson’s Virgin Hotels division.
Virgin Hotels was a natural for Gap, considering the retailer already works with Virgin Hotels on content for stylby, and also provided denim jeans to uniform male employees of the hotel’s Commons Club.
“Traveling can be full of unexpected surprises,” said Tricia Nichols, global lead of consumer engagement and partnerships for Gap. “You could come to Chicago not prepared for the weather, or maybe lose your luggage, or maybe you want to go for a jog,” and need a sports bra or racing top.
The service is provided through Gap’s reserve-in-store program where you can shop online and pick up the order in a store. At the hotel, guests access gap.com via Lucy, the hotel’s mobile app or by visiting virginhotels.com, and then select the styles through the reserve in store button. The hotel concierge takes it from there, picking up the order, bringing it to the guest’s hotel room and placing it in a closet within the hour. If the guest decides not to

From Tests to Therapy

From Tests to Therapy

Psychologists seem to be everywhere these days, but it’s a little known fact that in 1970 there were only a few hundred clinical psychologists in the whole of the UK. Author Alan Smith was one of these pioneers; working in the British National Health Service at the beginning of this young profession. Now retired, he has published his autobiography in the form of a diary, describing events and anecdotes relating to his profession, including being trained in a modern psychiatric hospital – but working in an old mental hospital built as a Victorian lunatic asylyum. Additional background information gives the reader an understanding of the profession. Alan’s autobiographical work turns books like Sylvia Plath’s The Bell Jar and Susanna Kaysen’s Girl, Interrupted on their head as readers get to see not who is being treated, but who is doing the treating. It details the progression of the psychological industry from 1969-2000, covering a frustrating battle against business management ideas being introduced by the government and obstructive attitudes adopted by some psychiatrists. At times shocking but always interesting and well-written, From Tests to Therapy is aimed at the general reader as well as mental health professionals, and will appeal to history lovers too. Inspired by Richard Bentall’s Doctoring The Mind, Alan’s book offers an interesting and rare insight into the world of Clinical Psychology. From its difficult early history to the respectable career it is today.

Writing a Life: Teaching Memoir to Sharpen Insight, Shape Meaning–And Triumph Over Tests

Writing a Life: Teaching Memoir to Sharpen Insight, Shape Meaning–And Triumph Over Tests

"This depth of attention to a single genre is unprecedented in books on the teaching of writing. Until now, for this depth, teachers used books written for aspiring writers and translated them into sensible classroom practice. Katherine brings writing and teaching together exquisitely in this beautiful book." – Katie Wood Ray, Author of "About the Authors""Smart teachers will read this book. Smarter teachers will use it as a guide. The smartest ones will read it, use it, and then return to it for inspiration, reflection, and, ultimately, for hope. In Writing a Life, Bomer takes us beyond the craft of writing memoir to the purpose and passion of this genre." – Kylene Beers, Author of "When Kids Cant Read – What Teachers Can Do"Writing a Life "has become my new Best-book-in the-whole world. Like a best friend, this book understands what I need without my naming it, and responds in ways that are as deep and as pure as the human spirit." – Lucy Calkins, Author of "Units of Study for Primary Writing" Memoir is more than writing down memories; it’s a powerful motivator for children to write and revise. Working with familiar material, students explore their lives, learn new and sophisticated elements of craft, and engage deeply with content to uncover personal and universal meaning. By teaching with memoir, you can help students exceed official standards for writing, both in class work and on tests, while also giving them a tool for making sense of their place in the world. In "Writing a Life," Katherine Bomer presents classroom-tested strategies for tapping memoir’s power, including ways to help kids generate ideas to write about, elaborate on and make meaning from their memories, and learn craft from published memoirs. She describes dozens of ideas for minilessons, teacher – student conferences, peer conferences, writing activities, prompts, and revision strategies. She then crosses the literacy spectrum to show how studying mentor memoirs can enrich students’ reading by building strong reading-writing connections. In addition, Bomer presents a curricular unit that prepares students for writing tests by systematically and explicitly helping them transfer the content and skills they develop in writing memoir to the demands of standardized assessments. Every student has a story to share. With "Writing a Life," you’ll have the inspiration, the strategies, and the materials you need to help them write it beautifully.
