Smash Bros. Fans Think the Game’s Single-Player Will Be About Saving Luigi’s Soul

During Nintendo’s Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Direct last week, we saw Luigi kick the bucket, and now fans are speculating that it ties in to the game’s unannounced single-player campaign.

Luigi’s untimely death played out before our very eyes in the last week, but Nintendo has assured fans that the plumber is alive and well, despite his soul being cleaved from his body by the spectre of Castlevania’s Death. But Luigi’s apparent demise has led fans to believe the game’s unannounced single-player mode will see players rescue characters who have had their souls taken.

Three-Time Oscar Nominee Saoirse Ronan Doesn’t Think She’s Famous Like Selena Gomez

A decade after her breakout role in Atonement that earned her first Oscar nomination, Saoirse Ronan still doesn’t think she’s famous.

The 24-year-old actress appears on the latest cover of Vogue where she muses on her notoriety after a fan briefly interrupts the interview to ask for a picture.

“I still get completely shocked that anyone knows who I am,” Ronan says, adding that she would rather act without the fame that comes with it. “But I’m not . . . famous. I just genuinely don’t think I am. Selena Gomez is famous.”

Ronan has gained critical acclaim ever since her 2008 role in the period drama that saw her nominated for several awards at just 13-years-old. She’s since earned Oscar nominations for her roles in 2015’s Brooklyn and 2017’s Lady Bird, her latest.

But the actress says she stays away from the public side of her job by not reading anything related to her.

“If you’re not aware of how often you’re in a newspaper, then it’s like it’s not really happening,” she says. “I just get so anxious whenever I watch anything that I’m in. I’m fine with the way I look now. But I wouldn’t necessarily be looking at photographs of myself all day. I don’t want to become too consumed by the image of myself.”

Think Tank: How a Desire to Play Influences Color and Design Trends

It is time to take play seriously. In an age colored by uncertainty and upheaval, consumers are yearning for meaning, searching for a deeper understanding of themselves and the world around them. Amidst the overwhelming concerns about our environment and the instability of the political and cultural landscapes, many are returning to the basics of play to find deeper, more positive connections through interaction, exploration and experimentation. From essential to joyful, art for art’s sake is seeing a renewed appeal, and fun and happiness are reigning over practicality and utilitarianism.
For a long time, fashion has held sway over provocative design intended to challenge and drive aesthetic shifts. However, the post-austerity era shifted design attitudes to become more essentialist. The overall design landscape became homogenized, as designers played it safe by catering to good taste conceptions. In a backlash, design direction and color palettes are becoming more expressive and challenging, at times verging on bad taste. Recent catwalk shows have taken on increasingly joyful aesthetics.
Veteran provocateurs such as Henrik Vibskov, Walter Van Beirendonck, Vivienne Westwood and Jeremy Scott are being joined by new upstarts such as Collective Das Leben am Haverkamp and Charles Jeffrey. Even Calvin Klein, historically associated with essentialist,

“Marvel Comics has an annoying tendency to take a good story and overextend it with too many tie-ins and offshoots. That was the case with the Death of Wolverine event in late 2014. The initial Death of Wolverine miniseries was well-crafted, but the story turned into a bloated mess thanks to the numerous spinoffs that followed and the dreadful Wolverines weekly series. Unfortunately, Marvel doesn’t seem to have learned any lessons from that particular event. Rather than simply give readers a clear, straightforward look at the hows and whys of Wolverine’s return, Hunt for Wolverine #1 is merely a prelude to a four-month-long crossover no one asked for.” -Jesse

Why Everything Negative You Think About Pit Bulls Is Wrong

On National Pit Bull Awareness Day, it’s important that people know the negative stereotypes surrounding this breed are wrong.

Aggressive. Dangerous. Angry.

People who aren’t familiar with them describe pit bulls as a lot of things — mostly negative. But as PEOPLE Pet Vet Dr. Evan Antin explains above, pit bulls are actually “some of the sweetest, most loyal, special, amazing dogs.”

While some people breed pit bulls specifically to use as fighting dogs, the truth, Dr. Antin says, is that “99.999 percent of the pit bulls you see in the rescues and shelters are super sweet.” In fact, Chihuahuas are actually more aggressive as a breed than pit bulls — they just don’t have that extra strength that comes with being a big dog.

If you’re at a shelter and considering a pit bull, there are simple ways to tell if he or she might be overly aggressive. Hear more on that from Dr. Antin in the clip above.

Luann D’Agostino ‘Definitely’ Does Not Think Tom Cheated on Her and Denies That Ex-Boyfriend Jacques Led to Split

Luann D’Agostino and Tom D’Agostino, Jr.’s marriage may have began in the wake of a cheating scandal, but the Real Housewives of New York City star insists her soon-to-be ex-husband was faithful to her during their seven months wed.

“I do not think Tom cheated on me, definitely not,” Luann, 52, told Page Six on Friday of the reasons for their divorce. “God knows he’s got himself in some trouble in the past, but I don’t believe that continued .”

”It was impossible, we were having problems and we tried really hard to fix things, and we finally came to the conclusion it was just not going to work,” she continued. “It was a tough decision and we are both very sad about it. But the truth is we just weren’t getting along.”

The couple, who wed in a Palm Beach ceremony on New Year’s Eve, both filed for divorce on Thursday, Page Six reported, with Luann making the announcement of their separation on Twitter.

“It’s with great sadness that Tom & I agreed to divorce,” the former countess wrote. “We care for each other very much, hope you respect our privacy during this sad time!”

Hours after sending the tweet, the 53-year-old reality star was spotted out in Sag Harbor, New York, without her wedding ring — wearing a yellow sundress, matching sandals, black shades and carrying a brown purse.

RELATED VIDEO: Highlights of Luann de Lesseps & Tom D’Agostino Jr.’s Wedding

Insisting nobody else was involved in their split, Luann also shot down rumors that her friendship with ex-boyfriend Jacques Azoulay — whom she dated for four years before splitting from in 2013 — prompted Tom to file for divorce, jealous that Azoulay staying at Luann’s Sag Harbor home.

“Jacques has a girlfriend and he’s staying in a hotel, we’re friends, he’s not staying at my house. There’s no truth to the story of Jacques and me,” Luann told Page Six. “God knows I’ve been going through enough recently, I don’t understand why this false rumor is coming at me.”

Azoulay has remained on good terms with Luann  — even attending her wedding to Tom with his girlfriend, Missy Hargraves. He too shot down rumors of a romantic reunion with Luann.

“I just arrived right now in the Hamptons and I am not staying at her house,” he said. “Luann and I are very good friends, and only friends. I actually really like Tom, he’s a nice guy, I regret it didn’t work between them.”

On Friday, Luann gave gratitude to her fans for the love they’ve given her in the wake of the divorce announcement. “Thank you for the generous expression of warmth, kindness and understanding,” Luann tweeted. “Your support and encouragement helps me to get through.”

Her tweet came with another noticeable and unspoken statement: the reality star’s Twitter display name was now changed back to the name she had before marrying Tom — de Lesseps.

The Real Housewives of New York City finale airs Wednesday at 9 p.m. ET on Bravo.

Don’t Even Think About Sharing That Photo Of Jessica Chastain’s Wedding Dress

On Saturday, Jessica Chastain tied the knot with fashion executive (and down-low member of Italian royalty) Gian Luca Passi de Preposulo in a private ceremony at the groom’s family estate in northern Italy. The bride wore white; attendees included fellow actors Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt and Edgar Ramirez.

That’s about all the Oscar nominee wanted the public to know. But during the wedding, paparazzi photos were taken from helicopters without the actress’ consent, making the internet rounds and turning an intimate moment into gossip fodder.

In response to this invasion of privacy, the “Zero Dark Thirty” star confirmed her marriage and slammed the paparazzi in a note shared on social media Tuesday night that included a special request to her followers.

“Did you hear? I’m off the market,” Chastain wrote, alongside a longer statement. “Gianluca & I got married! We wanted privacy & aren’t selling photos but I’ll post something in the future.”

She continued:

Thank you for all the sweet comments about my wedding. I love you and it was a beautiful day. I am going to ask you to please stop sharing the photos. Helicopters disregarded a no-fly zone & took those pics during the ceremony. Every time I see them I’m reminded of the insensitivity of that moment. I promise that I will share pics with you in the future, but I would prefer to share photos that celebrate love, not intrusion. I’m off social media for a few weeks. Much love and happiness to all of you.

Chastain’s stance makes sense given that she’s remained incredibly private about her relationship with Passi de Preposulo up until this point. The two have dated for nearly five years, but the actress has only given snippets of information to media outlets here and there.

Aside from revealing that she’s “very, very happy” with Passi de Preposulo, she told Extra in 2013 that it’s “a wonderful thing when a career does so well and your personal life goes so well.”

So, to make a long story short, stop, drop and scrap that wedding photo collage you already made until official photos are released. If watching half of “Miss Sloane” before falling asleep on a transatlantic flight taught us anything, it is that you do not, under any circumstances, mess with Jessica Chastain.

This Post About Stretch Marks Nails The Way We Think About Our ‘Flaws’

A picture is worth a thousand words, but sometimes it’s the caption that speaks directly to you.

Kenzie Brenna is an actress recovering from eating and body dysmorphic disorders who regularly preaches self-love to her 151,000 Instagram followers. At first glance, the photo she posted of her stomach last week might look like many others on her page. Her thought process, however, will resonate with anyone who’s struggled to find their confidence and maintain a positive body image.

The image shows what Brenna calls her “least favorite” body part ― the stretch marks on her stomach ― and her caption details the many thoughts she wrestles about them throughout a given day. They range from “they actually look kinda cool” to “you’d probably be more comfortable without them,” ultimately ending with the accurate conclusion that Brenna is perfect just the way she is, because “perfect isn’t a feeling.”

“They’re not usually this noticeable.”

“If you only had the money to get rid on them.”

“They actually look kinda cool. Sorta like a the beginning of a story.”

“More like the beginning of a LONG story.”

“Would I erase my story to not have these?”

“You’d probably be more comfortable without them.”

“Would I truly though?”

“Okay ask yourself the question.”

“I don’t wanna.”

“Just do it.”

“Does this affect the quality of who I am?”

“No.”

“Would it make you a better person if you got rid of these marks?”

“No.”

“Would it make you kinder, more generous and a better lover if you had the money to erase them?”

“No.”

“Then you’re perfect.”

“I don’t feel perfect.”

“That’s cause perfect isn’t a feeling.”

Brenna’s post is a reminder to us all that we don’t always need to feel 100 percent about anything in our lives or with our bodies, but that in time and with practice, appreciation gets a little bit easier.

“I PROMISE if you practice self-love, you will have more loving moments with yourself than you could ever dream of,” she wrote.

We’ll be bookmarking this promptly for our next off day, thank-you-very-much.

You’re not as secure online as you might thinkThe problem with our grasp of cybersecurity isn’t so much that we remain dangerously illiterate — it’s that we think we know what we’re doing anyway. The Pew Research Center was a little more diplomatic than that though in characterizing the findings of a new survey of Americans’ understanding of online security. “Many Americans are unclear about some key cybersecurity topics, terms and concepts,” wrote Kenneth Olmstead and Aaron Smith in their introduction to “What the Public Knows About Cybersecurity.” But it’s that thinking that probably leads many internet users to make choices that they think make them more secure, but, in reality, leave them as exposed as ever.

Think!

Think!

This isn’t the time to Blink. It’s time to THINK! – before it’s too late. Outraged by the downward spiral of American intellect and culture, Michael R. LeGault offers the flip side of Malcolm Gladwell’s bestselling phenomenon, Blink, which theorized that our best decision-making is done on impulse, without factual knowledge or critical analysis. If bestselling books are advising us to not think, LeGault argues, it comes as no surprise that sharp, incisive reasoning has become a lost art in the daily life of Americans. Somewhere along the line, the Age of Reason morphed into the Age of Emotion; this systemic erosion is costing time, money, jobs, and lives in the twenty-first century, leading to less fulfillment and growing dysfunction. LeGault provides a bold, controversial, and objective analysis of the causes and solutions for: the erosion of growth and market share at many established American companies, big and small, which appear to have less chance of achieving the dynamic expansion of the past permissive parenting and low standards that have caused an academic crisis among our children – body weights rise while grades plummet America’s growing political polarization, which is a result of our reluctance to think outside our comfort zone faulty planning and failure to act on information at all levels that has led to preventable disasters, such as the Hurricane Katrina meltdown a culture of image and instant gratification, fed by reality shows and computer games, that has rendered curiosity of the mind and spirit all but obsolete stress, aversion to taking risks, and therapy that are replacing the traditional American “can do” mind-set. Far from perpetuating the stereotype of the complacent American, LeGault’s no-holds-barred analysis asks more of us than any other societal overview: America can fulfill its greatest potential starting today, and we need smart teachers, smart health care workers, smart sales representatives, smart stu

24 Hours — It’s Not As Long As You Think

2015-08-24-1440446548-9241394-Time.jpg
Image: Amanda Yuill

A few times a year, something magical happens in my world. I find myself in possession of something akin to the Holy Grail — 24 hours without any plans. When I realize that one of these days is on the horizon, it captures my full attention, and I go to extreme lengths to protect it. And then I start to fantasize about all of the wonderful things I’m going to do with this precious, empty day. The adventures I’m going to have, the radical self-care I’m going to partake in, the trombone practice, the photography expedition, and as sad as it is, I’ve even fantasized about using some of these days to finally catch up on work. My expectations start to soar, and more often than not I find myself starting to stress about how I’m going to fit it all in.

I’ve been doing a lot of mindfulness work lately, in particular trying to play the role of “curious observer” to my thoughts and behaviors. It was through this curious observation that I came to a shocking realization this week.

Things take time.

Quite a lot of time, actually. And no matter how much we try to multitask (which is not only counterproductive but may even be damaging to our brains), or use the latest “productivity hack” to expand it, time isn’t going to change to meet the demands of our busy schedule.

It’s no secret that those demands have grown, seemingly exponentially, during our lifetimes. While a lot of progress has been made on the convenience and efficiency fronts, the expectations about what we do with all that saved time have escalated out of control. Some of those expectations we place on each other (we’ve all got our “thing”, and we all want our friends and family to come watch/play/do it with us), but most of them come from within. We expect from ourselves nothing less than the perfect body, perfect relationship, perfect career, perfect home… and the list goes on. But guess what?

Mastery takes time.

10,000 hours of deliberate practice to be exact, according to Malcolm Gladwell in the bestselling book Outliers. And even that won’t get you there if you’re not starting with some key talent or genetic qualities. But let’s consider that for a moment — 10,000 hours. If you were to spend two hours per day of deliberate practice on just one of those things (which is pretty ambitious for most of us), every single day, it would take about 13 years and 8 months to achieve mastery (which is as close to perfection as any of us can hope for).

Knowing this rule of thumb arms us with information to help reshape the expectations we place on ourselves. Namely:

  1. Pick a thing to be the thing you’re really, really good at. Maybe two. But no more than that, because if you do, you’re setting yourself up for failure.
  2. For those one or two things, calculate where you’re at on your journey to mastery using the 10,000 hour rule, and reset your expectations for achieving mastery based on the amount of time you are willing to commit in the future.
  3. For all of the other things you used to aspire to perfection in, create a new expectation that is more realistic based on the amount of time you are willing to commit to it.
  4. Next time you notice yourself stressing about being too busy, look at your schedule objectively and be honest with yourself about where you’re placing expectations on yourself that you could ease up on. If you think everything is being imposed on you by others, think again. We often tell ourselves this to avoid taking responsibility for our own experience.

Incidentally, today was one of those days for me — magically uncluttered by commitments. What did I do? A yoga class, a hike with my dog followed by giving her a bath, some laundry, took a nap, ate delicious, simple, healthy food, and wrote this post. Maybe half of what I had wanted to do. But I’ve been reminding myself all day that time is what it is, and I did the things that were most important to me first. It’s not easy, but I’m starting to accept that time is a more powerful force than I will ever be, and I can spend my life fighting it or get more realistic and work with it.

How would you describe your relationship with time? And how could you improve it? I’d love to hear from you in the comments below.

If You Think The Apple Watch Is Ridiculous, You Ain’t Seen Nothing Yet

What’s better than wearing a $ 500+ Apple Watch? Attaching it to a $ 9,000+ designer watch and wearing them both at once, of course.

California-based watchmaker Nico Gerard released on Monday the Pinnacle watch, a Swiss-made, 41-millimeter by 10.3-mm, water-resistant timepiece with a strap that fastens onto the Apple Watch.

“The chronometer is situated on the outside of the wrist; the smart watch is situated on the inside of the wrist,” the watchmaker’s website reads.

There are three models to choose from: the Pinnacle, which at $ 9,300 has a stainless steel strap and a black watch face; the Skyview Pinnacle ($ 9,500), with a stainless steel strap and a navy watch face; and, finally, the Sunrise Pinnacle ($ 112,000), which is made of 18-karat gold and has a red face. An Apple Watch or an Apple Watch Edition is also included in each purchase.

You must reserve a model before buying it: Only 99 Skyview Pinnacle and 88 Sunrise Pinnacle watches are available for reservation; there is no limit on the number of standard Pinnacle models available. Reservations, by the way, cost another $ 200 — $ 500 if you’re buying the Sunrise. Customers then have to wait between six and 12 months (depending on which they bought) before they can get their hands — or their wrists — on the timepieces.

Adam Pluemer, president of Nico Gerard, told The Huffington Post that the “Apple Watch has a bunch of functionalities that people want to use,” such as the heart rate monitor. The Pinnacle bracelet “allow[s] someone to wear that classical timepiece and have all the benefits of the smartwatch as well.”

He also noted that by having an Apple Watch on the inside of the wrist, the wearer could more discreetly view his or her notifications –“If you’re in a board meeting, you don’t want someone across the table reading your text messages” — though why one needs to drop over $ 9,000 for something that can be done with the regular Apple Watch is beyond us. Maybe it’s another way to hide your Apple Watch from your “mainstream” friends.

Nico Gerard is not the first watchmaker to invent a fasten-on for the Apple’s latest gadget. Watchmaker Original Grain also started a crowdfunding campaign in June for The Duo Watch Adapter, which allows users to link the band of their Barrel watch to the Apple Watch on the same clasp.

However, the Original Grain watch is priced at $ 269. Why do the Pinnacle watches cost at least $ 9,300, then?

Pluemer says it’s because the devices are certified by Official Swiss Chronometer Testing, the organization responsible for verifying the accuracy of Swiss timepieces. He also noted that “only 3 percent of Swiss watches actually qualify for [this] certification — so it is actually an elite watch.”

Pluemer was not able to tell us how many watches had been reserved, as of Tuesday.

Exclusive: This Documentary on Plus-Size Models Will Change the Way You Think About Your Body

Plus-size fashion is having more than a moment, it’s on the brink of a revolution—and models are taking on a leading role.

From Ashley Graham‘s Sports Illustrated ad to Candice Huffine‘s Pirelli Calendar slot, the community has been on the fashion industry’s lips all year. In the midst of such pronounced media attention, producer and former model Jessica Lewis is getting ready to debut Straight/Curve, a documentary that delves into the world of plus-size modeling.

“This generation of models is ready to usher in a new definition of beauty—one that is all inclusive and supports positive body ideals and self acceptance,” said Lewis, who has spent over 15 years as a straight-size and plus-size model. “The fashion industry needs to be reflective and representative of the diversity that exists in present day society.”

Straight/Curve, set to release next summer, aims to examine and redefine the beauty standards put forth by the fashion industry, as they relate to the plus-size fashion. Most importantly, it will be talking about issues often pushed aside. Multiple people will be speaking about sample sizes and how adding a size 14 into circulation will help get diversely sized models in magazines. Agents will be talking about their move towards eliminating plus-size boards and placing all models together. Models will be talking about making plus-size inclusion a non-event in the media.

Straight-Curve-Models

Clockwise from top left: Eva Kay, Natalie Torres, Jessica Lewis, Sarah Hartshorne, and Sabina Karlsson being interviewed for Straight/Curve.

The film is the most insider look at the industry so far, going behind the scenes of New York’s plus-size fashion industry, with a focus on top models, agents, clients, and photographers. The trailer is already loaded with power players, but there are some top models being kept a surprise… So far, we know it will follow industry influencers, including Kate Dillon, Sophie T. Simmons, and Jennie Runk, among others (including this Glamour writer!).

Overall, Straight/Curve aims to expose the complex relationship between the fashion industry, mainstream media, and body image in society. “When, how, and why did size zero become the norm when two thirds of women are considered ‘plus-size’ sitting between a size 10 to 14?” Director Jenny McQuaile told Glamour. “Our documentary will examine this question. There’s always been a complex relationship between the fashion industry, the media, and body image and we’re finally making a film that will investigate that.”

Here’s en exclusive look at the trailer:

You Are Your Own Worst Enemy and You Are Your Own Worst Enemy If You Think That You Are Your Own Worst Enemy

There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio,
than are dreamt of in your philosophy.
~ Hamlet (1.5.167-8)

I have a marketing problem.

I teach conundrums, paradoxes.

I undercover discrepancies, hypocrisies.

I explore aberrations and mysteries of the human mind – phenomena beyond the ken of the cage known as consciousness that coddles us into complacency, lulls us into believing a new normal after every paradigm shift, without us ever knowing it.

And I do this with some really bright, well-educated people.

But I am not a magician or “mentalist.” I am merely a psychotherapist who teaches mindfulness and a little yoga.

The first part of my “Cultivating Meaning and Happiness through Mindfulness and Yoga” workshop is How Your Mind Was Built and What It Was Primarily Designed To Do, which happens to be to protect you from future traumas by creating fears, prejudices, reactions, assumptions, and expectations.

Depending on who you listen to, our minds have 50,000 to 70,000 thoughts per day.  The vast majority are the same as the thoughts we had yesterday and the day before and most of those thoughts are negative.  Yes, our minds have a negativity bias.

So how do I get really bright, well-educated people to have somatic, visceral experiences that give them insights into the mental and emotional Operating Systems that are running their hard-drives?  How do I get people to release some of those fears, prejudices, reactions, assumptions, and expectations so that they can show up authentically in the present moment?

That was the essentially the question the editor of my next DVD “A Beginner’s Guide to Happiness” asked me when he asked me what the midpoint should be.  I thought about the midpoint of the daylong course that I have taught to thousands of physicians, psychologists, attorneys, nurses, engineers, professors and other extremely erudite people over the past few years.

As I stated above, I have a marketing problem: because if I opened my workshop with, “We are all 100 percent responsible for our thoughts, feelings, and actions and if we allow our minds to run on autopilot we are bound to crash,” half of my students would run from the halls demanding their money back.

But when I spend an hour casually discussing some anomalies of quantum physics, some observations made by Jacques Lacan, Slajov Zizec, John Bowlby, Mary Ainsworth and a few other people, then have participants attempt some mental gymnastics like try to imagine infinity, try to think without language, try to change their childhoods, try to shut off the chatter in their heads, try to NOT imagine Barack Obama standing on the White House lawn wearing the United States of America flag as boxer shorts… it slowly dawns on them that “the mind has a mind of its own,” that they are flying on auto-pilot most of the time (fears, prejudices, reactions, assumptions, and expectations influence most of their decisions) and that many the thoughts that rise to consciousness may not be the most useful or interesting or help them get their emotional needs met.

So if you want to explore some of the great mysteries and paradoxes of the human mind, such as why you are your own worst enemy and you are your own worst enemy if you think that you are your own worst enemy, if you want to learn how to take yourself off of autopilot by practicing yoga and mindfulness, and do some fun exercises to learn how to show up authentically and create loving, positive, supportive relationships, then check out one of my upcoming workshops or retreats.

Because there really are more things in heaven and earth, than are dreamt of in our philosophies.

Zoe Saldana On Nina Simone Criticism: ‘I Didn’t Think I Was Right For The Part’

The topic of race and casting in Hollywood resurfaced in the weeks since Entertainment Weekly published an essay by actor Michael B. Jordan on May 22.

In the essay, Jordan wrote about breaking down barriers with his role as the Human Torch, a character originally written as white with blue eyes and blond hair, in the forthcoming “Fantastic Four” film.

Jordan’s commentary prompted a response from actress Zoe Saldana, who supported the star’s thoughts in a Facebook post. In the post, Saldana posed a question to critics who were against Jordan playing the role.

If we question why Michael has been cast to play the Human Torch in Fantastic Four then we must also question why Elizabeth Taylor played Cleopatra, why Angelina Jolie played Mariane Pearl in a Mighty Heart, why Laurence Olivier played Othello, Burt Lancaster in Apache, and the list goes on….and on….

Saldana has faced similar criticism herself. In reaction to her casting as Nina Simone in the upcoming biopic “Nina,” some fans and critics suggested the actress was too light-skinned to portray the role.

The 36-year-old added to previous comments on the backlash this week in the July issue of InStyle magazine.

“I didn’t think I was right for the part, and I know a lot of people will agree, but then again, I don’t think Elizabeth Taylor was right for Cleopatra either,” she said in the interview. “An artist is colorless, genderless… It’s more complex than just ‘Oh, you chose the Halle Berry look-alike to play a dark, strikingly beautiful, iconic black woman.’ The truth is, they chose an artist who was willing to sacrifice herself. We needed to tell her story because she deserves it.”

For more of Zoe Saldana’s interview, check out the July 2015 issue of InStyle one it hits newsstands on June 15.

This Bride Didn’t Think Her Sick Dad Would Make It To Her Wedding. But He Did.

Andre Pearson never thought he would make it to his daughter’s wedding.

The 61-year-old arrived at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, in March with heart and kidney failure, according to a press release from the hospital. At the time, doctors thought his condition was so bad that he only had one more year to live. He underwent surgery to repair his heart valve and dialysis treatments, which improved his health, but he was told he was still too sick to fly to his daughter Alexandra Price’s wedding. The plan was for him to watch the Palm Springs, California, ceremony Saturday on FaceTime.

But last week, Pearson’s medical team did a reevaluation and decided he was well enough to fly. They told him they were going to send him to the ceremony at Desert Ridge Estate in Indio so he could surprise his girl, according to local TV station KESQ.

“I really didn’t expect it. It came out of left field,” Pearson told The Huffington Post during a phone call Thursday. “I said, ‘No way this could be happening.’ The first thing I thought was Oprah coming out of the hallway. That would’ve been my next thought, that Oprah’s got a trip for me or something. But it was good.”

His surprise was only matched by his daughter’s, who burst into tears Friday when she opened the door of the house where she was staying and saw her father outside.

TK gifs

“Everybody was excited,” Pearson said. “Especially when I was rolled in the wheelchair into the house where she was at and she had no idea that it was coming, but it was all of a sudden tears everywhere. Tears of joy.”

Price was thrilled.

“I knew he wasn’t coming because I knew the circumstances and everything and I just feel shocked; it feels like a dream,” she told KESQ. “It was amazing since he wasn’t supposed to be here. It was just amazing to have him, sickness and all, here and it just made me feel really happy and whole and complete.”

Pearson, the brother of former Dallas Cowboy Drew Pearson, said his favorite part was getting to walk Price, who is his youngest daughter, down the aisle.

TK gifs

“I gave her away at the altar, that was very special, as well. Then I got a chance to go back to my seat and I started crying right there,” he said. Pearson also got a son that day, he said. “My wife and I never had any sons; we have all girls. I told [Price’s husband] that I just gained another son,” said Pearson, who has another son-in-law who lives in Texas. “Now I have two sons and I’m thankful for that. It’s wonderful that they’re the right guys and will take care of my girls, especially my youngest, my baby.”

After successful treatment at the Mayo Clinic, Pearson is now well enough to likely return home to Nebraska within the next month, according to the clinic’s press release.

Why You Need to Think Hard before Agreeing to Co-Host a Shower

Have you ever had to co-host a bridal shower or baby shower and wanted to kill the person you were planning with before the day of the shower even arrives? I have a friend who is about ready to kill her recent co-hostess, and after hearing the stories, I’m willing to help her bury the body and hide the evidence.

We’ll call my girlfriend “Michele” so I don’t tip off her potential victim. This story is about planning a baby shower, but all of this applies to giving a bridal shower too. Keep that in mind when you’re volunteering. And when you accept somebody’s offer of help.

Michele offered to give a shower for her childhood girlfriend who is having her first baby. Because Michele lives hours away from the guest of honor, they’re going to have the party at the home of the mommy-to-be. But she doesn’t have to do anything. Michele plans to arrive a couple of days ahead and clean the entire house before and after the event so the preggers guest of honor doesn’t have to deal with it or overstress herself.

When Michele asked her friend for the guest list to send the adorable giraffe invitations she’d ordered (it’s a boy!), her friend INFORMED her that another friend was going to co-host the event and she was handling the invitations.

Because the baby shower was going to be at the guest of honor’s house, Michele didn’t feel like she could argue about it, and the guest of honor presented it as a fait accompli. It was a done deal and, apparently, the other friend would be really hurt if her offer to “help” wasn’t accepted.

Michele was seriously put out, but trying to be a good sport and supportive friend, she went along with it and contacted her future partner-in-crime. They chatted about the plans and Michele told her everything she’d already planned, ordered, and purchased, and the other woman was on board with everything. She offered to take care of sending the invitations (which Michele had already had made) and bring the cake. Safe enough, Michele thought. She was wrong.

After spending hours creating adorable wedding favors, hunting used bookstores for specific selections for a baby-shower game, shopping ahead at Costco for the beverage supplies, and buying pretty much everything necessary to make an elegant but fun jungle-themed bridal shower, Michele was pumped. She even stopped worrying about the cake.

Until she called her co-hostess a couple of weeks prior to the shower to check in and was informed that she had changed theme of the cake to The Minions. No seriously. And just to class it up even more, she was doing an ice cream cake – a total mess when you’re trying to have an elegant tea party. She also proudly announced that she’d purchased a whole bunch of Minion décor to contribute to the jungle. It was clear she was clueless about the concept of having a décor theme actually make sense.

Look, a Minions theme is perfectly fine if that’s what you’ve planned – it’s fun and the décor and favors should match the concept. I’ve seen adorable cupcakes made using Twinkies – but they’re a theme in their own right. Adding The Minions to sweet décor of giraffes and elephants will just look weird. It’s like having a SpongeBob SquarePants theme and deciding to decorate the room with Princess Bride. It simply doesn’t work together. Anybody can see that, right? Apparently, this woman couldn’t.

How did Michele handle the change of plans foisted on her? Better than I would have. She simply told the girl she already had the décor covered (as if Minion garlands hadn’t been mentioned) and everything else was already taken care of. And then she hung up the phone and came up with a plan for appropriately-themed cupcakes to put on the party table as well.

She did ask her co-hostess to help with the cleaning and prep, figuring if she had time to hunt down Minions napkins she could help clean a bathroom. But she was wrong. The other woman pled “too busy” and Michele did all the prep work

She managed to hide as much of The Minions décor as she possibly could – the garlands did not get put up and were mysteriously missing a the last minute – and she created an appetizing cupcake display that drew the eye away from the mushy melting mess that had to be served in the kitchen rather than in the dining room, where pictures were being taken. The baby shower was a success and Michele graciously shared the kudos with her co-hostess. But she was on a rant when I talked to her about it afterwards. She did not have fun executing this event, although she was happy the new mommy was happy.

There’s nothing wrong with two friends co-hosting a bridal shower or baby shower together. In fact, it’s a great way to have fun planning and share the expense. But trying to plan with a complete stranger who was foisted on you by a well-meaning guest of honor is a complete and total nightmare.

One solution is to offer to throw your own shower if you have a place to do it. Most brides have more than one bridal shower, although the same guests should not being invited to both of them (excluding the moms and the bridal party, of course).

Showers really aren’t meant to be huge events – if you have 50 people you must invite, then you really need two or three different showers. There’s plenty of fun to be had by all and no reason you need more than 10 to 15 guests at any one shower. It’s flat-out hard to play party games with a huge group, and it takes FOREVER to open the gifts at a large shower. I’d rather attend a small bridal or baby shower and actually get to visit with the guest of honor than make small talk with a large group of strangers and sit through two hours of gift opening.

It’s almost always okay to decline someone’s offer to co-host a special event. Michele wishes she had pushed back when she was informed she had a partner. If you agree to plan something with someone you do not know, make sure you agree on the ground rules, theme, and how you’re going to split the expenses BEFORE you actually start planning together. It doesn’t have to be a nightmare.

Until next time, happy wedding planning from Weddings in Vieques and Sandy Malone Weddings & Events!

Lindsey Graham Doesn’t Think Being Single Will Hurt His White House Chances

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), a 2016 Republican presidential candidate, would be just fine being single in the White House — and he doesn’t think voters will mind either.

Graham, who has never married, told The Huffington Post on Saturday that he didn’t think his marital status would affect his chances of winning the presidency.

“It’s up to people to make that decision. I feel real comfortable with who I am and the life I’ve lived. I’ve got a wonderful, supportive family. And the last time I checked, I didn’t see a sign on the White House that said ‘single people need not apply,'” Graham said at an event hosted by Sen. Joni Ernst (R-Iowa) in Boone, Iowa. “So I am good to go, I think I’d be a good commander-in-chief and I’d work really hard as president for everybody and for your family.”

Only two bachelors, James Buchanan and Grover Cleveland, have ever been elected president.

Since joining the presidential race last week, Graham has sought to highlight his foreign policy experience. According to HuffPost Pollster, which aggregates publicly available polling data, Graham is at the bottom of the 2016 Republican field.

Getting Married This Month? That’s What You Think

June is the traditional month for weddings. The weather is nice; not too, hot. School is over. Graduations have passed. White is in season. Daylight seems destined to last all night. The season vibrates with promise. It seems an auspicious time for making commitments about the future. Spring has dosed all of our senses with the promised rewards of love. At one time, as you may have heard, weddings were the condition precedent to obtaining the rewards of love. June it seems is the month for weddings because nature has filled it with swelling buds, shoots of tender new growth, a drenching haze of pollen, and the awakening of bees to collect it.

So you may be having a wedding this month, and if so, you have my sincere wishes for a perfect day and the spouse of your dreams. But, don’t think for a minute that just because you’ve had the wedding ceremony, the champagne and cake, that now, lo and behold, “by the powers vested in me,” etc., you are “married”. Not by a long shot.

Marriage isn’t an event, it’s an achievement. You have to work at it. It takes years, typically many years to become truly married. The best description I’ve found comes out of the old, tobacco growing, south. Cigar makers blend different varieties of tobacco, each with its own traits and characteristics. Then they would then pair and roll the different varieties of leaves together and stack them on racks in a special room called a “marrying room“. There the tobacco would be left to age and mellow. Over time, thanks to the skills of the blender, the undesirable traits and characteristics of each variety would be mellowed, or overshadowed by the best traits and characteristics of the others. The result was the best of what each tobacco variety was capable of offering.

People are not tobacco. We’ve pretty much abandoned professional “blenders” for computer matching algorithms. The marrying process requires more time and much more effort and struggle, than for tobacco. We do not give up our rough edges, our egos and competitiveness nearly so readily as tobacco leaves. Mellowing for people usually requires that the rough edges be chipped off and filed smooth. It requires going through a process; determining what is truly important to our being who we are, and what only seems important because of our vanity, ego, and stubbornness. It requires installing a control valve on our deep well of oppositional defiance – the thing that makes us want to stay standing when someone says, “Sit down.” It requires recognizing, that our efforts at ‘correcting’ and ‘removing’ the flaws and short-comings of our spouse create more problems than they fix. It takes quietly giving up on ever ‘fixing’ anything about them, and at last truly accepting them and loving them, as they are – great, good, and bad. So marriage comes, not easily, but after all our efforts at making over our spouse have worn us down. Once the battling is exhausted, marriage still requires persistence, patience, and a great deal of acceptance and giving in.

These adjustments are not easy. They do not happen quickly. But the result – the peace, the depth of love that transcends feeble passions, the merger, the dance, the song of two souls, makes the struggle and the years seem insignificant. The result may be bold and fiery, or placid and cool, but this is what it takes to become ‘married’. It will pay great dividends in the long run. This is the first generation in history that can access help and a head start before the wedding by putting some time and effort into collaboratively planning life after the wedding. There are collaborative marriage planning teams out there that can help. But, with or without professional guidance in the process, you should practice working collaboratively with your spouse-to-be. You will need a vision for where you want to get once you are wed, a plan for how to get there, and a picture of how your partnership is going to work once the honeymoon is past and “real life” takes over. Then as you walk down the aisle, you can have confidence that you’re prepared for the long, and challenging journey you are embarking upon; you will have a valuable head start toward – ‘marriage’. Your wedding is the embarkation point for your life’s journey and marriage. Bon Voyage.

Amy Schumer: ‘I Think People Hate Women’

Being a woman in Hollywood involves putting up with a whole lot of bullsh*t.

During The Hollywood Reporter’s Comedy Actress roundtable, six hilarious A-listers — Amy Schumer, Lena Dunham, Tracee Ellis Ross, Ellie Kemper, Gina Rodriguez and Kate McKinnon — got real about sexism in the entertainment industry.

Schumer didn’t hold back when discussing the lack of women in late-night television, and why women don’t make it into powerful and visible positions even though there is no shortage of female talent.

“I think people hate women,” she said. “I don’t think they want to hear a woman talk for too long. A lot of people project their mom yelling at them. My [career] has been about tricking people into listening. I’m not saying all men hate women, but there’s such an aggression.”

Dunham backed her up, pointing to the vicious commentary that awaits vocal women on platforms like Twitter and Instagram. “The way women are spoken to in social media is truly shocking,” she said. “It’s how you imagine people screaming at prisoners in Guantanamo.”

The women related stories of receiving death threats, rape threats, wishes of cancer diagnoses and hearing the good ol’ “women aren’t funny” refrain on social media. They also spoke about experiencing overt sexism from within their own industry.

hollywood reporter

Dunham opened up about a time when she heard man who was working on “Girls” make a rude comment about the work environment.

“I heard a guy on my show say into his microphone: ‘I hate this job. I can’t wait to be back on a show where there’s a man at the helm,'” Dunham recounted. Later on, she says the same man commented on her lunch, saying, “You’re really enjoying that buffet, aren’t you?”

“He’s the worst person alive,” said Dunham when Schumer asked her who the dude was. “I hope he reads this, which he won’t because he’s drunk.”

But all of the actresses agreed that having more projects led by women and people of color — especially ones that make money — make it easier for people who aren’t white men in the future. “Show them it’s all a good investment,” said Rodriguez.

Head over to The Hollywood Reporter to read the full roundtable discussion.

2 Of B.B. King’s Daughters Think He Was Poisoned

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Two B.B. King heirs who’ve been most outspoken about the blues legend’s final days are accusing King’s two closest aides of poisoning him.

Daughters Karen Williams and Patty King allege in documents provided by their lawyer to The Associated Press that King’s business manager, LaVerne Toney, and his personal assistant, Myron Johnson, killed their father.

Clark County Coroner John Fudenberg (FYOU’-den-berg) said Monday that an autopsy was performed Sunday on King’s embalmed body, and test results will take up to eight weeks.

Las Vegas police Lt. Ray Steiber confirmed that homicide detectives are investigating.

Toney and Johnson each declined to comment.

The coroner says King’s body has been returned to a mortuary, and the investigation shouldn’t delay planned memorials this week in Memphis, Tennessee, and Indianola, Mississippi.

Sarah Deragon’s ‘The Identity Project’ Challenges The Way We Think About Queer Identity

“The Identity Project,” from photographer Sarah Deragon, challenges the way that we compartmentalize and think about queerness and identity.

The photo series captures the way subjects want to present themselves to the world around them and communicate their personal ways of self-identifying. Mainstream understandings of what it means to be lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) tend to be narrow and specific, but with “The Identity Project,” we can see the infinite shades and hues of queerness that make up the spectrum of human identity.

dapper

The Huffington Post chatted with Deragon this week about her work and how the project has grown.

The Huffington Post: What is your driving vision for The Identity Project?
Sarah Deragon: My main vision for The Identity Project is to expand what we normally understand to be the LGBTQ communities. I wanted to create a photo project that allowed participants to self-identify and stand up and be seen for who they really are. I honestly thought that the project would be a small collection of 50 or so photographs, but the response to the project was so profound that I decided to expand it and travel to several US cities like New York City, Portland, Chicago and soon Austin to photograph more people. I imagine that this will be an ongoing project for me throughout my lifetime.

Oscar Winners Thank God A Lot In Acceptance Speeches, But Not As Often As You’d Think

Oscar winners always thank God, right?

Wrong.

The stars who win big at the Oscars aren’t looking to heaven during their acceptance speeches — they’re looking at Steven Spielberg.

The renowned American film director is thanked more often during Oscars acceptance speeches than the Good Lord Almighty himself, Vocativ reports.

With the 87th Academy Awards slated to air on Sunday, Vocativ mined through 1,396 acceptance speeches currently archived on Academy’s website to measure who got the most “Thank Yous” from winners.

Spielberg came in at number one, with 42 mentions, followed by Harvey Weinstein, James Cameron, George Lucas, Peter Jackson. God came in at number six, with just 19 mentions.

It should be noted that a number of acceptance speeches from the earliest years of the awards haven’t yet been added to the Academy’s acceptance speech database. As a result, Vocativ’s survey isn’t conclusive.

Still, it seems the dream-come-true moment inspires many winners to give thanks to forces greater than themselves. Here are a few of the celebrities who gave God a thumbs up during their time in the spotlight.

I know that my work in this case is magnified by the fact that the streets of heaven are too crowded with angels. We know their names. They number a thousand for each one of the red ribbons that we wear here tonight. They finally rest in the warm embrace of the gracious creator of us all. A healing embrace that cools their fevers, that clears their skin, and allows their eyes to see the simple, self-evident, common sense truth that is made manifest by the benevolent creator of us all and was written down on paper by wise men, tolerant men, in the city of Philadelphia two hundred years ago. God bless you all. God have mercy on us all. And God bless America.

This is, you know, it fills me with great joy, but I am also filled with a lot of sadness tonight because I’m accepting an award at such a strange time. And, you know, my experiences in making this film made me very aware of the sadness and the dehumanization of people at times of war, and the repercussions of war. When I was thirteen years old, my beautiful mother and my father moved me from a conservative Mormon home in San Antonio, Texas, to California, and I heard the story of Harvey Milk. And it gave me hope. It gave me the hope to live my life. It gave me the hope one day I could live my life openly as who I am and that maybe even I could even fall in love and one day get married. I wanna, I wanna thank my mom, who has always loved me for who I am even when there was pressure not to. But most of all, if Harvey had not been taken from us thirty years ago, I think he’d want me to say to all of the gay and lesbian kids out there tonight who have been told that they are less than by their churches or by the government or by their families, that you are beautiful, wonderful creatures of value and that no matter what anyone tells you God does love you, and that very soon, I promise you, you will have equal rights, federally, across this great nation of ours. Thank you. Thank you. And thank you,God, for giving us Harvey Milk.

The first line of the book [The Color Purple] is, “Dear God, I’m fourteen years old…” And I had lived that life and couldn’t imagine that someone was able to put into words what I had already experienced. And so began this journey that I was able to really understand that God’s hand, or power greater than myself, “the forces,” as Sidney Poitier calls them, were engaged in leading my life to a plane and a level that I had not even imagined. But I released myself to those forces, and literally said inside myself, “Thy will be done.”

He has shown me that it’s a scientific fact that gratitude reciprocates. In the words of the late Charlie Laughton, who said, “When you’ve got God, you’ve got a friend. And that friend is you.”

Confirmation: Dressing Kate Middleton is Absolutely as Amazing as You’d Think

When I got to sneak backstage after Friday’s Zimmermann show to talk to the designer, you know what I had on my must-ask-about list: Kate Middleton. The duchess put the Australian label firmly on the map when she wore its crisp white eyelet dress Down Under last April.

kate-middleton-white-zimmermann-eyelet-dress-australia

“That definitely would have been one of the biggest things that’s happened to us in 20 years of business,” designer Nicky Zimmermann told me with a grin. “It affected our parents, our family. Everybody loved it! If you’re Australian, British royalty is a big deal and it meant a lot to a lot of people. She’s the epitome of a sophisticated, beautiful young woman, and we are massive fans.”

Nicky was on holiday with her fam when Kate decided to wear the frock (typically designers and brands have no idea that a major celeb is going to wear a piece until they’re out and being photographed).

“I was walking through caves with my children with no communication,” she said when I asked when and where she found out. “I got back to the house and every person that I was with, their phones were going berserk. We flipped on the news and ‘Kate Middleton Wears Zimmermann on Manly Beach’ was the title.”

Ahh! I can’t even imagine how thrilling that moment must have been.

If you’re wondering what Kate could wear from the just-debuted fall collection, I’m one step ahead of you.

zimmermann-fall-2015-bright-print-maxi-dress
I’d love to see her in this multi-colored gown. The ruffles at the shoulders and voluminous skirt moved so beautifully on the runway, I’m sure the magic would be repeated on a red carpet or stepping out of one of the monarchy’s cars.

zimmermann-fall-2015-brown-suede-dress-hat
The neckline of this suede beauty is a little too low for Kate, but I think she’d look fantastic in it.

Could you see Kate in either of these fall designs? Ever wondered how crazy exciting it must be to realize that someone so famous is wearing something you created?

The Loft Is So Much Better Than You Think It Is Going to Be

The Loft is a surprisingly entertaining film that keeps the audience in the dark as to its villain(s) until the very end. The fact the ending is logical and difficult to anticipate makes this movie an above average feature. There is also some solid acting from a cast not particularly known for the type of roles they are inhabiting.

The premise of the film is that five friends partner up to buy a loft where they can have complete privacy. Vincent (Karl Urban) is the man with the plan but his buddies Luke (Wentworth Miller), Marty (Eric Stonestreet) and Philip (Matthias Schoenaerts) eagerly commit to their share of payment and accept their keys. All of the men are married but this does not seem to be a problem except for Chris (James Marsden) who intends to be faithful to his wife (Rhona Mitra). His fidelity lasts until he meets Anne (Rachel Taylor) and falls completely in lust.

Now all five men are using the lift for their various trysts. Everything is going smoothly until one morning they discover a body in the bed. Since there is no sign of a break in and the alarm code has been entered they become suspicious of each other. Still all claim complete innocence, but in this film no one is who or what they claim to be.

Both Urban and Marsden have more screen time than the others so they could be considered the leads. However in this movie the supporting players get to have the meatier scenes. Stonestreet who is best known for his current role on Modern Family as Cameron, is a complete surprise here as the drunken, woman chasing Marty. Equally good is Miller, who once starred in the Fox series Prison Break. Here he is an intellectual and also a shy man.

The movie operates with a present day story interspersed with numerous flashbacks. In many movies this has proven to be an annoying way of telling a story and I generally prefer a linear approach. In this film, however, the back and forth storytelling works. Each flashback provides another peeling back of a layer of deception. There is one “aha” moment after another.

In The Loft movie the women are not the prominent players but Isabel Lucas and Taylor, who play Sarah and Anne, manage to make their presence known. Both are beautiful women and that adds to the validity of their roles.

The movie is rated R for violence, profanity and nudity.

The Loft arrived with little advance fanfare so it might not even be on your entertainment radar. If you like movies that keep you in the dark until the reveal then this is a movie you want to see. Believe me, it is so much better than you think it is going to be ,

I scored The Loft a high up 7 out of 10.

Kanye West May Design Washington Wizards’ Uniforms, But We Think He Could Change A Lot More

In some of the most unexpected style news as of late, Kanye West might be designing NBA jerseys sometime soon. Kanye’s friend, Wale, who, according to Vanity Fair is a “creative liaison” for the Washington Wizards, recently stirred up rumors that West would help design the Wizards new basketball uniforms. Say what?!

Sure, West has style cred to his name: he’s appeared on the cover of Vogue, redone Kim’s wardrobe a few times and starred in Balmain’s Spring/Summer 2015 campaign. The man even showed his own fashion line at Paris Fashion Week, to not much fanfare.

So if the rumors are true, we’re envisioning Kanye’s got big changes in mind, such as:

Better jerseys What’s that jersey, Margiela? It is now. We predict that with Kanye’s designer connections (think Balmain, Giuseppi Zanotti) the new jerseys will be fly as f*** and probably look something like this:

New sneaks Obviously, everyone will wear Yeezy’s Red Octobers even though they might be a little heavy to play in. Put your Jordans away!

New warmup sweats: Sweats MUST look good in warmups when you’re trying to intimidate another team, so a nice, neutral gray is a good way to get your game face on. Gold chain optional.

Sweeter socks: Most athletes like to wear Nike Elite socks, as they’re known for their comfort and support level during matches. But with Kanye’s Kardashian connects, we predict the Washington Wizards will be wearing Arthur George aka Rob Kardashian’s upscale sock line.

Mandatory hair cuts: Hair is yet another way to intimidate opponents in the NBA (think Dennis Rodman). Why not try shocking other players with a new cut? “Hey LeBron, look at MY hairline.”

Thought You Were Too Old for Mary Jane Flats? Think Again

Here at Glamour, we often find ourselves discussing what a pair of shoes needs to make it really stand out. Maybe it’s a bit of hardware, a specific color, or something as simple as the shape of the toe. When it comes to the Mary Jane, this week’s choice for #flatsfriday, I think it’s a combination of all three.

vanessa-jackman-mary-jane

Now, I recognize that they may remind you of your childhood (complete with frilly, white ankle socks), but today’s Mary Jane flats are so far from the ones you wore as a tot. With a slimmer shape, daintier (and possibly, multiple) straps, and a shortened toe box, they remind us more of elegant ballet slippers. The exposed skin makes for quite the sultry look! Don’t believe me? Flip through the 15 pairs I found and try them out for yourself.

Fashion Experiment: What Guys Really Think of Your Low-Cut Necklines

nasty-gal-black-plunge-low-cut-crop-top

Give me any big red carpet and I’ll give you a handful of low-cut dresses that dip so far south, it’s nearly indecent. Sunday’s Golden Globes was no exception, and while those steamy dresses look fantastic on big nights like that, have you ever wondered if they’re actually wearable in real life, or would, you know, everyone and her brother be too shocked to formulate complete sentences? An intrepid reporter at the Daily Mail took it to the streets in London where, mind you, it’s not exactly cleavage-baring weather.

“She’s showing too much flesh for the temperature, but she looks really nice, and I like her outfit,” one 27-year-old male told the paper. “A celebrity is a real woman at the end of the day; someone like Kim [Kardashian] just celebrates her body more than the next person. If a lady wants to show off her assets, she should go for it.”

“I don’t think anyone can judge her, and if you do, that says more about your character than her look,” another young guy offered (how great is he?). One of my favorite responses came from an older woman, who echoed my persistent thought that when we’re all grandmothers and approaching 80, we’ll be seriously bummed that we didn’t just wear the dang crop top and miniskirt. “She’s young, and she can get away with it,” she said. “She’s having fun!”

Do you have some low-cut numbers in your own closet? Ever feel overexposed wearing them? (Or gotten too much attention from guys?)

PS: If you’re wanting to try the look, consider this sexy little number from Nasty Gal.

If You Love ‘Serial,’ You Probably Have More In Common With Weegee Than You Think

On October 3, 2014, “This American Life” producer Sarah Koenig began telling a very specific story. She introduced public radio listeners to a man named Adnan Syed, who may or may not have been wrongly convicted of killing his former girlfriend, an 18-year-old Baltimore resident named Hae Min Lee, back in 1999.

The rest is… Well, you know the rest by now.

Koenig set her sights on unraveling Syed’s guilty verdict, a decision that — today, at least — seems laced with doubt. What began as a small weekly investigation of this strange case, quickly evolved into a show with a five-million-person audience. “Serial” has since spawned countless Reddit subgroups, a new genre of podcasts about podcasts and a nearly nation-wide obsession with a crime committed 15 years ago.

As we wait for the conclusion of Koenig’s investigation, it’s impossible not to think about America’s current fascination with crime. As well as its past. We were reminded of an early 20th century icon, enraptured by the crisis and conflict of New York City’s crime scenes. Arthur Fellig, or Weegee as he’s pseudonymously known, was one of the most famous street photographers of the 1900s, who captured decades of violence with his stunning, monochromatic eye. He was obsessed with crime years and years before Koenig. And, probably, years and years before you.

weegee crime

Polish-born American photographer Arthur Fellig (1899 – 1969) with his Speed Graphic camera. He was known by the police as ‘Weegee’ for his ouija-like prescience of crime scenes and disasters. In fact he kept a radio in his car tuned to the police frequency, and was often able to reach the scene before the police themselves. (Photo by Weegee(Arthur Fellig)/International Center of Photography/Getty Images)

Felig was born in Austria in 1899, emigrating to the United States in 1910. In his early career, he spent time as an assistant to a commercial photographer and a dark-room technician, but it wasn’t until 1935 that he threw himself into freelance photography. He chose to work at night, racing to the scenes of crimes to snap the first photographs of murders, collisions and thefts for newspapers across New York City. He earned his nickname that way — appropriated from Ouiji — because he was nearly always the first photographer on site. He seemed to have an eerie ability to arrive before even the police. He was, in his own words, “spellbound by the mystery of murder.”

Working with his signature Speed Graphic camera, his images were seedy, but captivating. One aspect of his work that set him apart was that he caught glimpses of the officers digesting evidence and the onlookers attempting to peek through barricades, all the while standing before corpses and crashes. The expressions of these people were not necessarily sensational in their own right, but the landscapes functioned as behind-the-scenes footage. All of a sudden, the viewer was privy to a police investigation, fixated not only on the tragic, almost ungraspable elements of a crime scene, but the very human qualities too. What is the police chief thinking? What is that eye witness feeling? Even in black-and-white, it was easy to insert ourselves into his photography. We became a part of the drama.

weegee crime

And isn’t that, after all, what makes Koenig’s “Serial” so alluring? Hasn’t she, in the process of telling Syed’s story, transformed millions of radio fans into self-possessed detectives? We believe, in some small way, the answers that could help put this very real, and very devastating saga to rest are within our reach. Koenig might not provide it for us, but perhaps we’ll stumble upon the clues ourselves.

“For all of the work [Koenig’s] done over the past year, each installment gets us no closer to a definitive truth, at least thus far,” Stephanie Merry wrote in The Washington Post Blog. “That helps to explain the fanaticism.”

“I feel like the story we are telling is partly what happened here, what can we find out, and part of that question is my reporting,” Koenig herself explained to Vulture. “I’m in this story now, for better or for worse, as a character.” And so too, it seems, are the listeners.

Later in life Weegee went on to cover the celebrity world, an ominous transition from one form of sensation to another. (Especially given the fact that “Serial” fans are not shy about their desire for a “Hollywood” ending.) He also produced a beautiful collection of abstract imagery, from nudes to kaleidoscopic figures. But his early career, and his dark body of work, is often what we can’t help but remember. See a selection of that work below.

Undefeated Heavyweight Boxer Deontay Wilder Fights A Fan (But It’s Not What You Think)

Heavyweight boxer Deontay Wilder posted a challenge on his recently-launched official Facebook fan page last month. “Get my Facebook page up to 5,000 likes,” he said, “and I’ll post a video of me fighting one of my fans.”

It was an intriguing promise, and within weeks, Wilder’s goal was reached.

On Thursday, Wilder made good on his vow, posting a video on his YouTube page. It was certainly a fight against a fan, but it was perhaps not quite the fan that most had expected.

As is clear in the video, the poor fan didn’t stand a chance against Wilder; but in a fight against a 32-0 professional heavyweight boxer, who has won all 32 bouts via knockout, who really does?

Think About It: A Creative Community for Peace

The Creative Community for Peace was born officially with a full-page ad in the New York Times calling the “arts (to be) used to build bridges of peace” in Israel and Palestine, and perhaps the world.

Certainly, there can be no more distilled expression of a culture than its works of art.

We desperately need another tactic, another force for solving problems in the middle east and in the world.

In the coming decade, the challenge for humanity will be whether we can come to grips with the idea of a world community, shared governance and the notion that the differences between us — the art and culture and wonder and beauty of those differences — must be something we can respect, honor, grow to appreciate and welcome.

In creating art, consciously or not, artists are attempting to communicate at a powerful emotional level to those within their own culture. The best work transcends its cultural matrix and speaks directly to our common humanity.

Already, the world is so inextricably interconnected that cultural and economic isolationism is unthinkable, even if it were desirable. But more needs to done, and perhaps the most effective thing that can be done is to aggressively promote multicultural understanding. By doing so, perhaps, we can create the world community reflective of the world economy in the making.

Given the ubiquitous nature of the worldwide web, we can use the new technologies — with their powerful capacity for shaping and delivering human interchange — as virtual bridges across the vast distances separating cultures.

Over the last few decades we were witness to a basic change in our modern day world: globalization, the rise the rebirth of the region state, and the resurgence of age old hostilities — racial, tribal and religious strife — that lay just beneath the surface for the last 100 years.

Globalization — something still not understood but feared — has forced us to think about the rest of the world, not just ourselves. For globalization to work, as former President Bill Clinton has observed, we need to be sensitive to the social and political values nation to nation as well as the economic opportunities.

As Thomas Friedman observed in his book of the same name, suddenly The World is Flat.

By the turn of the century and the onset of a new millennium, the Internet changed the way the world communicated with one another around the world, as it changed the structure of the world economy. The worldwide web wasn’t invented until the late 1990s but by the year 2000, the net seemed to be growing at 15% per month worldwide.

Everybody is now communicating with everyone else; every person, every community is competing with every other… and in the process, the question is being raised about the future of the world, and of the current geopolitical order.

Friedman calls it Globalization 3.0

While there are countless disciplines, which might reasonably serve as a means to understanding culture, such as history, sociology, mathematics, and science, only art lends itself to the full range of experiential capabilities offered by the new technologies.

This is why art serves so superbly as a universal language — as a means toward understanding the history, culture, and values of other peoples. As human beings build virtual bridges into unknown cultural territory — and there learn, share dreams, and creatively work together–mankind will know itself as citizens of a rich and truly global society. And if citizens of a global society are to live in peace, goods, services, and technical information are exchanged, but values and visions, as well.

It is this new technological marvel that has made the world smaller that compels worldwide debate and discussion; and provides the threshold for the world’s greatest assets of art and culture to become the glue for discussion about a New World Community. Everybody it seems has an APP for almost every human endeavor. Maybe, America — in partnership with other governments and institutions around the world — should create the cultural databases that truly bring people together.

Maybe it is naive to say art is the universal language, and that we can open windows for all to see that we are just folks, and that we are one community. Yet, if art can’t, nothing can.

Brandy On Social Media: ‘I Don’t Think I Would Have Made It In This Generation’ (VIDEO)

With a music career that began when she was just 15 years old, singer and actress Brandy has been in the spotlight for two decades. Being a star on the rise can be difficult to navigate for any teen, but Brandy believes that today’s young stars have it much harder than she ever did. The reason? Social media.

In the above web exclusive from Brandy’s “Oprah: Where Are They Now?” interview, she explains the challenge of living in a world that is so socially connected.

“Oh my God… the opinions are so in-your-face,” she says. “I feel for the young artists today because people can just type them anything that they want to say and [be] negative, you know?”

Had social media been around during Brandy’s teen years, she doubts she would have been able to handle her naysayers having such direct access to her. “I don’t think I would have made it in this generation,” she admits. “I don’t think I had… that strength that you need to really have a sense of self.”

She may now be an industry veteran, but Brandy admits that she still struggles reading harsh comments as an adult.

“They say whatever [they want],” she says. “And things still affect me now.”

In the video below, Brandy joins “Oprah: Where Are They Now?” producers and opens up to HuffPost Live about her next big career goal.

“Oprah: Where Are They Now?” airs Sundays at 9 p.m. ET on OWN.

How Movies And TV Shows Are Changing The Way You Think About Love

The movies and TV shows watched by millions aren’t just entertaining; a new study says they’re affecting how people view romance and changing how they behave in relationships.

Researchers from The University of Michigan studied 625 college students (392 of whom were female) to determine if movies and TV shows were influencing their love lives.

Participants were given a list of 93 romantic films, such as “500 Days of Summer,” “Crazy Stupid Love,” and “In Time” and asked how many they had seen.

Next, they were given a list of 17 sitcoms including “How I Met Your Mother” and “Big Bang Theory” and were asked how many they watch and how often. Lastly, they were asked if and how often they watch marriage-themed reality shows like “The Bachelor” and “Millionaire Matchmaker.”

Researchers then analyzed the students’ ideas about love and also gauged whether or not participants believed that TV portrayed real life or saw it as total fantasy.

At the end of the study, three conclusions emerged:

  • More exposure to romantic movies led to a greater tendency to believe “love finds a way” and can overcome all obstacles.
  • More exposure to marriage-themed reality shows led participants to believe in “love at first sight” and that true love will be nearly perfect (what researchers call “idealization”).
  • On the other hand, watching TV sitcoms led to a negative view of romance and very little endorsement for concepts like “love finds a way,” “love at first sight,” “idealization” and the “one and only”.

Thus, the researchers suggest that the behaviors shown in each entertainment genre are actually being imprinted into our views of romance. For example, watching lavish dates on “The Bachelor” leads viewers to idealize love, while watching a couple bicker on a sitcom leads to a more negative impression of marriage.

So what does this mean for your own love life?

“Previous research suggests that beliefs about relationships can have implications for relationship satisfaction and longevity,” study author Julia Lippman wrote in an email to The Huffington Post.

Indeed, past studies have illustrated that people who can be classified as romantic appear to have more successful romantic relationships: they report high levels of love for a current partner, higher levels of relationship satisfaction, greater commitment, and a decreased tendency to engage in extramarital sex.

However, as Lippman points out, while certain romantic ideals can lead to stronger relationships, they can have negative consequences as well.

“Seeing your partner through rose-colored glasses is associated with higher levels of relationship satisfaction, but it is easy to see how seeing a partner who is bad news through rose-colored glasses (say, someone who is abusive) could have negative implications,” such as staying in a bad relationship for too long. More research is needed to explore that topic further.

The findings were recently published in the journal Psychology of Popular Media Culture.

“So You Think I Drive a Cadillac?”: Welfare Recipients’ Perspectives on the System and Its Reform, Third Edition

“So You Think I Drive a Cadillac?”: Welfare Recipients’ Perspectives on the System and Its Reform, Third Edition

This down-to-earth look at the welfare system provides readers with stories from welfare recipients themselves and from those who recently left welfare for work: how they got onto welfare, what the reality of welfare (and welfare reform) is for them, issues in raising their families, their plans, hopes, and dreams are for the future, and some of the struggles they face as they try to leave the welfare system.Welfare recipients who were interviewed by the author in Florida and Oregon share their perspectives on work requirements, family caps, time limits, and other features of the new welfare reform (TANF) program. They discuss the importance of a livable wage and health insurance in providing the needed security to leave welfare for good. These qualitative interviews are theoretically grounded, and supplemented with up-to-date statewide and national data on welfare reform and its consequences. The author says, “Underneath the political rhetoric and welfare statistics are real live human beings who are trying to make sense out of their lives.” Their voices provide a crucial counterpoint to the politicians and policy “experts” who have shaped the policy reform initiative. They show us that the so-called welfare problem is related to the insecurity of low-tier work in the United States.

Hill’s works examined the power of personal beliefs, and the role they play in personal success. “What the mind of man can conceive and believe, it can achieve” is one of Hill’s hallmark expressions.
