Volvo Says Americans Are Shifting Their Luxury Thinking

Are American consumers shifting their thinking of what luxury means?
Volvo Car USA thinks so. Volvo, which is repositioning the brand into the luxury space, partnered with The Harris Poll to get some insight on American attitudes on different themes, such as design, safety, technology and environment. The latest study on luxury indicates that Americans are rethinking their attitudes toward their possessions, looking to streamline and declutter their lives. The poll was conducted from April 26 to May 1, surveying more than 2,014 U.S. adults over the age of 18.
According to the study, 82 percent of Americans agree that people have too much stuff, while a slightly higher percentage at 85 percent said they are actively working to declutter and simplify their spaces. That includes 49 percent looking to declutter their bedrooms, while 34 percent are looking to streamline their wardrobes. Millennials in particular at 60 percent said they have more stuff than they did 10 years ago.
The study also found that respondents are saying they are shifting away from quantity, with 68 percent agreeing that “when it comes to modern luxury, less is more.” The latter has impacted purchase volumes and frequency in connection with how they spend for “modern

Alec Baldwin Opens Up About Suffering From Lyme Disease and Thinking He Was Going to Die

Alec Baldwin went from singing “Hallelujah” on the season finale of Saturday Night Live to jetting to balmy California to talk for the first time since a 2011 casual comment to the New York Times about having Lyme disease.

“They had me hiding in the bushes over there at a Lyme disease benefit,” Baldwin said as he went on the stage for the Bay Area Lyme Foundation (http://www.bayarealyme.org) LymeAid benefit for research at a private home in the woodsy enclave of Portola Valley, Ca outside Palo Alto on Sunday. “I have ticks all over me. I’m joking.”

Baldwin has been reluctant to talk about the disease, and Bay Area Lyme Foundation Executive Director Linda Giampa said that she has been trying for years to get him to come to their event. He finally agreed to do it last year, but then the appearance was almost derailed by Baldwin’s decision to do the SNL finale.

“We had already sold out the event for 350 people on that night when I was told. I asked if he would do it the next night and he graciously agreed,” Giampa said. “I think he just felt the time was right to talk about it.”

Baldwin said that he believed he had chronic Lyme disease even before he was diagnosed with it. He was bitten about 17 years ago, and got a shot. Then he was bitten again a few years later.

“I got the classic Lyme disease (symptoms) for each successive summer, for five years, every August, like this black lung, flu-like symptoms, sweating to death in my bed,” Baldwin said. “The first round (was the worst), and then it diminished, at least that’s how I perceived it.”

“The first time was the worst of all,” he recalled. “And I really thought this is it, I’m not going to live. I was alone, I wasn’t married at the time, I was divorced from my first wife. I was lying in bed saying, ‘I’m going to die of Lyme disease,’ in my bed and ‘I hope someone finds me and I’m not here for too long.’ ”

Baldwin went on to say that now he and his wife Hilaria constantly check their children for signs of tick bites.

“I want my kids to grow up riding horses and bikes and enjoying themselves every day and not have to spend every day with us going over them with a magnifying glass to make sure they don’t have any ticks on their body or their dogs, but that is part of the lifestyle of where I live,” he said.

He then lightened things up with his impersonation of President Trump and a joke about New York being a Red State. After an audience groan, he shot back, “I have Lyme disease. A little sympathy here.”

The benefit dinner and concert raised more than $ 8 Million, of which 100% will go directly to fund research for Lyme disease.

10 Times Princess Kate Said What Everyone’s Thinking About Parenthood

Yes, she lives in a palace and borrows jewelry from the Queen, but Princess Kate is also a mom of two toddlers —which means the same tantrums, food battles and sleep struggles as the rest of us. As 3-year-old Prince George and nearly 2-year-old Princess Charlotte continue to grow, Kate has increasingly shared her thoughts on parenthood  and its many challenges. Here are her most honest, relatable quotes about being a mother, the parents she admires and why every child matters.

1. On remembering that as a parent, you’re not alone — even if it feels like it sometimes.

“It is lonely at times and you do feel quite isolated. But actually so many other mothers are going through what you are going through, but it’s being brave enough to actually reach out.”

— at the Global Academy round table discussion

2. On the shock of new motherhood:

“Nothing can really prepare you for you the sheer overwhelming experience of what it means to become a mother. It is full of complex emotions of joy, exhaustion, love, and worry, all mixed together. Your fundamental identity changes overnight. You go from thinking of yourself as primarily an individual, to suddenly being a mother, first and foremost.”

— at the launch of a series of educational films from Best Beginnings, a charity partner of her Heads Together campaign

3. On judgment:

“Around a third of parents still worry that they will look like a bad mother or father if their child has a mental health problem. Parenting is hard enough without letting prejudices stop us from asking for the help we need for ourselves and our children.”

4. On how important the mental health of her own children is to her:

“We hope to encourage George and Charlotte to speak about their feelings, and to give them the tools and sensitivity to be supportive peers to their friends as they get older. We know there is no shame in a young child struggling with their emotions or suffering from a mental illness.”

5. On the values she hopes to instill in George and Charlotte:

“My parents taught me about the importance of qualities like kindness, respect, and honesty, and I realize how central values like these have been to me throughout my life. That is why William and I want to teach our little children, George and Charlotte just how important these things are as they grow up. In my view it is just as important as excelling at maths or sport.”

— during a visit to Mitchell Brook Primary School in February 2017

6. On how her own upbringing shaped her:

“”When I was growing up I was very lucky. My family was the most important thing to me. They provided me with somewhere safe to grow and learn, and I know I was fortunate not to have been confronted by serious adversity at a young age.”

7. On parenting in difficult circumstances:

“Parenting is tough. And with the history and all the things and the experiences you’ve all witnessed, to do that on top of your own anxieties, and the lack of support you also received as mothers. I find it extraordinary how you’ve managed actually. So really well done.”

— at Anna Freud Centre’s Early Years Parenting Unit in January 2017

RELATED VIDEO: Prince George and Princess Charlotte Have The Best Time in Canada!

8. On why she cares about children’s mental health:

“People often ask me why I am so interested in the mental health of children and young people. The answer is quite simple — it is because I think that every child should have the best possible start in life.”

— at the Place2Be Big Assembly for Children’s Mental Health Week

9. On why we should listen to children:

“Imagine if everyone was able to help just one child who needs to be listened to, needs to be respected, and needs to be loved — we could make such a huge difference for an entire generation.”

— at the Place2Be Headteacher Conference

10. On the “huge challenge” of parenthood:

“Personally, becoming a mother has been such a rewarding and wonderful experience. However, at times it has also been a huge challenge. Even for me, who has support at home that most mothers do not.”

— at the launch of a series of educational films from Best Beginnings, a charity partner of her Heads Together campaign

The Business of Golf-What Are You Thinking? 2012 Edition: How to Maximize the Financial Return of a Golf Course

The Business of Golf-What Are You Thinking? 2012 Edition: How to Maximize the Financial Return of a Golf Course

During the next twelve months, more than 58 million golfers will decide where to go play over 1 billion rounds of golf on nearly 33,000 golf courses. What influences their decision? They all have one thing in common: they are seeking value-based entertainment. What does it take to attract and retain those decision makers? The financial success of a golf course is dependent on understanding those motivations and ensuring that the experience created exceeds the price charged. In ground-breaking research based on hard economic data, extensive field experience, and numerous client case studies, eight key concepts that accurately predict the success of a golf course are revealed: 1.The age, income, ethnicity and population density within 10 miles of the course. 2.The number of playable days measured against the efficiency of management. 3.The integration of software to create actionable information. 4.Financial benchmarking facility performance against peers. 5. Continual “appropriate” investment in the course infrastructure, equipment and labor. 6.Ensuring the “assembly line” of customer touch points matches the desired experience intended: platinum, gold, silver, bronze or steel. 7.Understanding the golfer’s habits and preferences. 8.Evaluating and developing customer loyalty. This book sheds light on virtually every aspect of golf course operations-strategic, tactical and operational. You’ll learn why some golf courses are successful while others flounder. The Golf Convergence WIN™ formula taught in this textbook is an easy-to-follow method that has consistently increased the financial return of golf courses, and enhances the customer experience to the desired level. In an industry that is struggling who can afford to ignore the findings of this book, and the formula for success that is presented?

Coming to Your Senses: How to Stop Your Negative Thinking

In this video, Eckhart Tolle explains the present moment is a portal to eliminate our negative thinking. He says as soon as you realize you are entering a non-harmonious state of mind, such as: worry, anxiety, anger, or unhappiness in any form, you’ve lost track of the present moment– you believe something else is more important.

Unknowingly, many people live in an unhappy state of mind, but are unaware of it. Eckhart likens this to a noisy refrigerator running in the background that you don’t hear any longer because you’ve become accustomed to it. Suddenly, the refrigerator breaks down and you notice the silence, and only then do you become aware there was a noisy refrigerator in the room. Your negative thoughts are the noisy refrigerator buzzing along.

Present moment awareness is the conscious redirecting of your thinking mind into the direct perception and inner alignment with the present moment. Eckhart refers to this process as, literally coming to your senses.

Be silent, look around and listen, become aware of your breathing. Be here now. There is nothing more important than the present moment. As you consciously enter the present moment the thinking mind with negative thoughts recedes, and you wake up from being immersed in the voice in your head.

5 Tips About How to Stop Thinking Like a Starving Artist

Most of my life I believed that if I went after a creative career I would struggle financially. It was deeply ingrained in my belief system. I would think about phrases like “poor starving artist” and “feast and famine are part of an artist’s life”. It was a nonsensical belief system that was very damaging to my motivation. I literally believed all artists or creative’s had a hard time.

2015-05-06-1430947342-2805449-towel.jpg

I also felt like if I enjoyed my work and my creative projects, somehow I shouldn’t be paid properly or at all. Because I get joy from design, writing and art it used to be hard to expect actual money from being creative. Some people don’t value the arts as much as others. I have found a wide range of appreciation towards artistic projects from other people. Many people I have met have a great appreciation for design, writing and paintings. Other people I have met don’t value it at all. So as you can see the attitude and value is very different depending on the person viewing the work. How you value your own work is the most important part when getting over old crappy belief systems. You must believe you are good enough and talented enough. The rest falls into place with more confidence each step of the way.

My second belief deeply ingrained in me was if people thought I was creative they did not think I was business savvy. So I had a silly thought that I could not be creative and business smart at the same time. I held onto this conflict for most of my life. I am now 38 and realized a couple of years ago that I needed to change my inner thoughts around creativity, business and art. My life and business changed drastically, once I switched my thinking around.

1. Find some audio tapes so you can replace your belief system around feeling like a starving artist.
Start listening to people, podcasts and audio that speak highly of creativity and art. Invite people into your life that respect and admire your work. Focus on telling yourself the opposite of what you believe about money and creativity. I personally found I had to completely change my way of thinking around my work and what I have to offer the world. It took serious focus and quite of bit of time listening to other positive words around the subject. Audio tapes about positive thinking, business and art became my new best friends.

2. Make more art!
I say F**k what other people think. Don’t be shy, don’t hold yourself back, and don’t stop being you creatively because you are afraid. The more you feel inhibited, do the opposite and jump into your creative side, go for it. Use the fear like it is oil to fire. Be stubborn and keep creating!

2015-05-06-1430948234-5727044-emailheader.jpg

3. Read more about what you feel afraid to learn, or think you can’t learn.
I felt uncomfortable around selling and marketing my own creations. So I switched my thinking and read as much business and marketing books I could possibly get my hands on. I hated this thought at first because all I wanted to do was design, draw, sketch, paint and write! It felt awful at first but once I took control, I felt so much better. The best part was, I felt more confident about my work in every way, including business. As soon as I faced my fears, I started earning more money for my creative efforts. The results felt instant!

4. Vulnerability brings great lessons in life.
Being vulnerable with your art, writing and creativity can be a huge step for some, including me. I always shied away from truly putting myself in front of people. I really disliked the feeling of possibly being rejected or feeling judged. I decided that my vulnerability was just what I needed to go forward. Nowadays if I feel vulnerable I take it as a sign that I need to do more of it. The rebel side of me comes out and I just make the leap into the unknown and see what happens. Feeling rejected is all part of the process. Of course we are going to get rejected sometimes but you can’t get a big fat “yes” if you don’t try. Trust me, the uncomfortable feelings soften and become less of an issue, the more you simmer with your own vulnerability.

2015-05-06-1430948075-3169133-femalelookingbeyond.jpg

5. Hide out for awhile and stop any outside influences from interrupting your change of thinking.
Changing how you perceive something takes time. You may need to back away from friends or family for a little while, until you get grounded on your new way of looking at creativity. For me, if I honor my ideas by executing them and being true to myself I then value my work in a much higher regard. Taking yourself seriously and working hard, can increase your creativity and trusting the process can open up opportunities as if by magic.

John Cleese Says What You Were Thinking About Taylor Swift’s Cat

If you’ve ever looked at Taylor Swift’s cat and thought “What is wrong with that thing?” then maybe you are John Cleese. On “The Graham Norton” show, the audience swooned over a photo of Olivia Benson (because probably there was a cue card that told them to make an “ooh” sound), but Cleese stopped to say what everyone at home was really thinking.

“How did it have the accident?” he asked Swift. “Is that a proper cat? Or is it damaged irreparably? That’s the weirdest cat I’ve ever seen in my life.” She was not amused.

Cleese then went on to compare cats to women, and things got less funny and kind of weird. He’ll regret all of this when Taylor releases her new song about him: “The Purrfect Revenge.”

We Don’t Understand What The Ladies On This Week’s Worst-Dressed List Were Thinking

We’re not quite sure what the stars on this week’s worst-dressed list were thinking. Our roundup is filled with fashion fails that could have definitely been avoided.

For example, Saoirse Ronan forgot to dress her age and actress Maggie Grace wore pajamas on the red carpet. And sadly, we had to bestow the title of worst-dressed star this week to actress Julianne Moore for rocking a dress that she should have never put on her back.

Here’s a look at all our wost-dressed picks of the week. Let us know if you agree.

Saoirse Ronan

saoirse ronan
Why, Saoirse? Why? There is no reason that a beautiful young actress should ever be caught in such an unflattering get-up. She should befriend Emma Watson and raid her closet.

Laura Vandervoort

laura vandervoort
The major problem with this outfit is… everything! From the wet hair, cropped/half-peplum top and that stiff tea-length skirt, Laura would have been better off just staying home.

Regina King

regina king
One word: Ouch! It’s unclear what exactly is holding together the front of Regina’s dress, but they definitely look painful. Furthermore, the capped gown is ill-fitting and does nothing for the actress’ fantastic figure.

Julianne Moore

julianne moore
We hate to include Julianne on our worst-dressed list, but this dress is a fail. The asymmetrical design is awkward, frumpy and a far cry from the fabulous looks we’re used to seeing her in. Those strappy heels were also no-no, too.

Maggie Grace

maggie grace
PSA: Never wear night gowns on the red carpet.
