Virgil Abloh Thinks Streetwear Can Be a Trap

Virgil Abloh used the term zigzag often during his appearance at WWD’s Apparel and Retail CEO Summit. It describes how he’s climbed the ladder in fashion to launch his own line, Off-White, and land the artistic director position at Louis Vuitton men’s. Streetwear was how he got his foot in the door — the zig — but once he got inside he’s pushed himself past the confines of “streetwear designer” — the zag.
So far, the element of surprise, along with balancing his many other creative jobs, is working and he’s not looking to disrupt the industry as much as he wants to evolve it. In a conversation with WWD’s editor in chief Miles Socha, Abloh spoke about the sustainability of streetwear, how he avoids clichés, and what younger customers are looking for that most luxury brands don’t offer.
WWD: You trained as an architect, so you are an outsider of sorts to fashion design. Has this helped you to break rules and what principles do you bring from architecture?
Virgil Abloh: I first studied civil engineering at the University of Wisconsin at Madison and then architecture at the Illinois Institute of Technology. But I would say my sort of education started well

Prince William Just Revealed What Kate ‘Really’ Thinks About Him Being at a Motorcycle Race Today

Looking for adventure!

Motorcycle enthusiast Prince William flew to the Isle of Man for one of the world’s top races on Wednesday.

William, 35, who still rides a high-powered Ducati (which he recently used to get him to a soccer match with pals!), went to watch the famous festival on the small island between Britain and Ireland. And while the prince couldn’t wait to take in the event, his wife Kate Middleton didn’t share the same excitement.

William confessed Kate may have been a little skeptical of the intentions of his visit. When Laurence Skelly, the Isle of Man government’s minister for enterprise, asked him about her views. William told him, “When I said I was going to the Isle of Man for an official visit she said, ‘Really?’ ”

In the past, Kate has admitted to feeling “terrified” when her husband goes out on his motorcycle. And during a 2015 visit to Scotland, she said: “I’m going to keep George off of it!”

The annual Tourist Trophy (or TT race) is a major fixture in the motorcycling circuit. It began in 1907 and is one of the oldest motorsport events in the world.

As well as seeing a number of races, the prince met officials and support staff, and volunteers involved in the event.

William caught some of the final stages of the TT Supersport Race 2 before heading to a reception in the Government House Tent, where he met race staff and volunteers, civic dignitaries and representatives of local businesses.

He also spent time with the Joey Dunlop Foundation charity, which provides specialist accommodation for visitors to the Isle of Man with a disability.

In addition to his love of motorcycling, William would have flown near the race’s location while patrolling the Irish Sea on missions with the RAF Search and Rescue crews based at Anglesey. He once picked up a stricken sailor from the sea near the island.

The prince recently had the chance to test drive a bike during a visit to the headquarters of Triumph Motorcycles. There, he slipped a reflective jacket on over his blazer and sweater for a quick ride on the Triumph Tiger 1200. He also got to pose on a vintage model.

Scott Disick and Sofia Richie Break Up: He ‘Thinks She Might Change Her Mind,’ Says Source

Scott Disick and Sofia Richie are over, PEOPLE confirms.

According to a source, Richie, 19, ended the relationship with Disick, 35.

“Sofia broke up with Scott,” the insider tells PEOPLE, adding that Disick’s “old issues” contributed to the split.

“When Scott drinks, he is a sloppy mess and fools around,” the source says.

As for how Disick is dealing with the break up, “Scott seems fine,” the insider tells PEOPLE. “He even thinks she might change her mind. He isn’t really taking it seriously.”

The news comes amid heightened speculation about their relationship status after Disick was spotted looking flirty with a mystery woman at Kanye West‘s Ye listening party in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, on Thursday night. Disick reportedly told guests that he and Richie were no longer together, according to TMZ.

Richie and Disick — who shares three kids with ex Kourtney Kardashian — first sparked romance speculation in May after they were pictured cuddling up aboard a yacht in the south of France during the Cannes Film Festival. At the time, Richie — who previously dated Justin Bieber — adamantly denied anything romantic was going on, tweeting that the two were “just homies.”

Months later, the two had become “inseparable,” a source told PEOPLE in mid-September. They confirmed their romance shortly afterwards with friends in Miami, capping off the trip with a few PDA-packed days in Mexico.

In the months that followed, the couple spent much of their time traveling together, enjoying a romantic Italian getaway and another trip to Mexico. They also spent time together stateside and were regularly spotted in Los Angeles and New York City.

While a source previously told PEOPLE that Richie’s famous father Lionel wasn’t too pleased about the relationship — “Lionel knows Scott’s playboy ways, and he doesn’t want to see his daughter get hurt,” the insider said — the model had insisted that her dad was on board.

“He’s good — he’s been very nice,” she told E! News at the SAG-AFTRA Foundation Patron of the Artists Awards in Beverly Hills in November.

“He’s been very cool,”  she added. “He’s very supportive, whatever that means,” she added as Lionel, 68, jokingly pointed a gun-shaped hand gesture at his head.

“I am into her business, and she’s trying to keep me out of her business,” he said.

Throughout their relationship, Disick and Richie’s went through ups and downs. A source told PEOPLE in early November that it was “starting to fizzle.”

“They’re starting to argue more, and it’s bothering Sofia,” said the source. “She thought he would be more serious about their relationship and is finding herself to be more frustrated with him as time goes on. Everything everyone has been telling her to look out for, she’s now starting to see for herself. It’s really upsetting for her, but she is trying to work through it.”

But just weeks later, another source told PEOPLE the two were “very serious” and that Richie has been a positive influence on Disick, who is known for his late nights out and has openly struggled with alcohol abuse.

“She’s been great for him,” the source said. “She’s made a big impact on his life and hasn’t partied at all since they met.”

“His friends adore her and nobody notices the age difference,” added the source. “She is very mature, she grew up in Hollywood and has always been in older situations. They seem really happy.”

Star Trek: Shatner Thinks Nimoy ‘Cooked Up’ Spock’s Death

The death of Spock in the 1982 movie Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan is considered by many to be one of the most emotional and gripping sequences in the entire history of the long-running franchise—we placed it as our all-time favorite moment from the movies—but William Shatner has come to take a slightly different view of long-time friend Leonard Nimoy’s motivations behind the death.

In an interview with USA Today to celebrate Fantom Films’ theatrical re-airing of The Wrath of Khan on September 10 and 13—just in time for the movie’s 35th anniversary—Shatner reveals that he thinks Nimoy and producer Harve Bennett planned the whole story, from Spock’s death to his eventual resurrection, with the end goal being that as part of his return to the character, Nimoy could demand a directing deal for the sequel.

The HoloLens Inventor Thinks “the Phone Is Already Dead”

Microsoft’s Alex Kipman, HoloLens inventor has proclaimed that mobile phones as a device are dead.

While discussing the medium, Bloomberg reports that Kipman is sure that the phones will soon be replaced by hybrid devices more akin to the HoloLens. “The phone is already dead,” he says. “People just haven’t realized.”

This sentiment is seemingly echoed throughout Microsoft as the company focuses on their other devices, despite the potential 1.5 billion smartphones likely to be sold this year.

Microsoft has said it would rather stay out of the mobile phone market entirely unless they can offer something truly different. Marketing chief Yusuf Mehdi has even stated  “We’re not going to come out with another device that someone’s done,” remarking on the stagnant nature of innovation within the industry.

In A Surprise To No One, Victoria’s Secret Thinks Thin, White Women Are Sexy

Victoria’s Secret debuted its annual “What is Sexy” winners Monday, and many people are calling the brand out for its outdated stance on what sexy looks like.

Winners in categories like “Sexiest DJ” and “Sexiest Entertainer” went largely to young, thin, white women. Many on social media slammed the lingerie brand for its lack of diversity and inclusivity.

It’s never a good thing when brands declare just a narrow range of body types or skin tones as “sexy,” and unfortunately this kind of move is pretty much par for the course when it comes to Victoria’s Secret.

Year after year, VS has failed to embrace a wider range of beauty both in stores as well as on the runway of its highly watched fashion show. At a time when even high-end designers are using their platform to showcase women of different sizes and ages, the closest we’ve gotten to Victoria’s Secret following suit has been words of encouragement to do so by models like Denise Bidot and Ashley Graham

Other lingerie brands have done a better job of squashing outdated beauty standards, whether through committing to un-retouched advertisements or a wider range of models starring in their campaigns. Social media is flush with more body positivity and underwear selfies than ever. And still, we are yet to see a shift from what is arguably the most well-known, wide-reaching lingerie brand of them all.

The brand’s lack of offerings over a certain size has been credited with costs and resources. Cora Harrington, a lingerie expert, told Business Insider in 2016 that “what a lot of people may not realize is that each size grouping basically requires a different factory and a different set of patterns.”

But broadening your horizons to include more people on your list of “what is sexy” or, you know, not putting out a list declaring “what is sexy” in the first place doesn’t cost you anything, and would send a message to your customers that yes, thin can be sexy, but so can fat. White can be sexy, and so can black.

Sexy is not one size, race or color. If Victoria’s Secret hasn’t figured that out by now, we’re not sure it ever will. And that, for one, is pretty un-sexy if you ask us.

Why Kristina From ‘The Bachelor’ Still Thinks Nick Didn’t Give Her A Fair Shot

One of the most universally beloved contestants on Nick Viall’s season of “The Bachelor” was undoubtedly Kristina Schulman. The 24-year-old Kentucky dental hygienist won over Bachelor Nation when she spoke movingly about her childhood in Russia and her eventual adoption and emigration to the United States.

HuffPost’s Here To Make Friends podcast got a chance to speak with Kristina about how she ended up on the show, her take on all the Corinne-Taylor drama, what it was like to have her immigration story air during such a politically-charged moment, what it was like to be on a news blackout during election season, and why she might be taking a permanent break from margaritas.

She also explained that she still believes that Nick didn’t give her a fair chance. “Our time came so late,” she said. “And I’m the type of person to try it all before I really call it quits. And to this day I feel like I’m left with, ‘what if?,’ but I’ve come to terms with it.”

Casey Anthony’s Former Bodyguard Says He Thinks She Is Guilty ‘Without a Doubt’

When Casey Anthony was initially bonded out of jail in 2008, she returned to her suburban Orlando home. The case was at its dramatic high point: protestors and media camped outside the house. Anthony’s 2-year-old daughter, Caylee, was still missing. Thousands of people were combing the area, looking for any sign of the girl.

But, according to a bodyguard who stayed in the home, Anthony was uninterested in the search.

Bodyguard Rob Dick spoke out for the first time on the podcast Allegedlyrecalling the “surreal” time when he was living inside the home with the Anthony family.

Almost immediately, Dick says he questioned Anthony’s behavior. “Here’s a mom in jail for the last 30 days, supposedly not knowing where her child is for 60 days now,” Dick recalled. “First question, what do you think it would be? ‘Have you heard anything?’ ”

Dick says that Anthony seemed uninterested in her daughter’s whereabouts. “She was just completely happy, excited to see her parents,” he said. “She asked, ‘What’s for dinner? Jail food sucks.’ ”

Eight years later, Dick says that he remains baffled at the attention given to the case. “There are lots of women out there that killed their kid. And I do say killed their kid,” Dick said. When one of the hosts asked Dick if he thought Anthony was guilty, he responded quickly: “Yes. Without a doubt. I think everybody knew she did it.”

• Want to keep up with the latest crime coverage? Click here to get breaking crime news, ongoing trial coverage and details of intriguing unsolved cases in the True Crime Newsletter.

But despite Dick’s belief in her guilt, a jury acquitted Anthony, who remains in seclusion in Florida. She is still described as one of the most hated women in America. Her attorney, Cheney Mason, said in September that his client had “gotten away with justice.”

The Backlash Continues

More than five years after Anthony walked out of jail, the public is still enraged at her acquittal — and at the fact that no one has been convicted of murdering Caylee. Dozens of Facebook groups still exist, dedicated to one goal: making sure that the woman who Nancy Grace once dubbed as “tot mom” doesn’t ever earn a penny off her crime by selling photos or interviews.

Anthony, now 30, is the subject of Scandal Made Me Famous, a show on the Reelz Channel that combines reenactments and exclusive interviews to tell the story of infamous crimes. An exclusive clip of the show is below.

In the show, insiders talk about Anthony’s bizarre behavior after her daughter vanished, including getting a tattoo and dancing on tables at nightclubs. The show explores possible scenarios of what may have happened to Caylee.

The Casey Anthony episode premieres on Saturday (9 p.m. ET) on the Reelz Channel.

My Husband Is a Slob and Thinks I’m Type A

Reader Married to the Slob writes:

My husband thinks I have a chronic problem of trying to do too much and that my expectations of myself and everyone else are too high. I think he needs a kick in the ass because he is SO laid-back. The only reason we haven’t killed each other yet is because he is too lazy to follow through and I am too overwhelmed to bother with it.

He grew up in a household where no one cleaned or had a bedtime or anything so my normal standards for what is acceptable seem sky-high to him. His dad is a hoarder, so his standards for clean are very low. He is so laid-back and I have trouble just sitting and relaxing. I have always been a busy type person.

I guess I have high standards when it comes to a few things: I shower daily, I keep our kids clean, I go to the gym and try to take care of myself but I am in NO WAY a perfectionist. My husband showers like 2-3 a week and he never exercises. He does make me happy and I do love him, so these things just sound nit-picky.

We went to marriage counseling to sort out some of these issues after our first child was born. We now have 3 children ages 6, 3, and 1. I stay home with them. Our oldest is in school most of the day. We do not have a cleaning lady or any extra help; I keep our 2500 square foot house in order, in addition to cooking and laundering 5 people’s worth of food and clothes. I do all of the grocery shopping. I am happy that I can stay at home, but it’s just a LOT. Meanwhile, he is a huge slob … there are literally ants living in his car. They’ve been in there for 8 months.

In counseling we learned that I am anxiety-prone (duh) and he has adult-ADHD (not surprising). We both took medication for awhile and got on track and have learned coping mechanisms that have carried us up to this point. We are both no longer on medication, but I wonder if:

1. We SHOULD BE on meds?
2. Additional stress of me trying to have a writing “career” or “hobby” has put us in a bad place because I am unable to keep up with everything on my own?
3. I’m going to flip out one day and have a nervous breakdown?

I know this is a common issue but I don’t know what steps I should take so resentment doesn’t continue to build. I just feel irritated with him all of the time and I hate it! I definitely don’t want to be “that” wife.

Dear MTTS,

Well, given the general tone of your letter, it sounds like you’re certainly still suffering from anxiety. No shame in that.  In fact, over 18% of Americans suffer from an anxiety disorder.  Why not go back on your meds?  It may cut down on some of your feeling of impending nervous collapse.   And why does your husband not go back on his ADHD meds?  This makes a huge difference in many ADHD marriages, my own included.  Honestly, it also sounds like you might have ADHD as well, but hyperactive type.  ADHD people often find one another, and have very intense courtships.  This may explain how you can never sit still and seem to be a perpetual motion machine.  So get evaluated for that as well.

Next, why not resume your marriage counseling?  It sounds like it was very helpful and informative.  You don’t have to go for a year straight, but it sounds like you can use a tune up.  Plenty of couples do this in my practice, it’s not one and done.  You guys had two great support mechanisms in place: meds and counseling, and now you’re not using either.  Why?  Are there lingering issues of shame about needing meds or therapy?  Please reconsider.  And whether or not your writing is causing stress is something only you can answer, hopefully with a clearer head from going back on your meds and seeing a counselor yourself.

Next, I feel for your husband having grown up with a hoarder parent.  Read a guest post about this here.  It can be traumatizing.  It also colored his view of what’s “normal,” as any type of dysfunctional family does.  In our Western society, it is not normative for an adult male to shower 2-3 times a week.  I am just guessing here, but I would imagine that this impacts your intimate life.  This would be a great thing to tell him as lovingly as possible, particularly if it would lead to an increase in frequency of sex.

You and your husband need to be able to communicate using more empathy and validation for one another’s perspectives.  This is something great to work on in counseling.  You seem to love one another but the relationship has become fraught with irritation and possibly even contempt on both sides. You owe it to yourselves and your kids to work this out now, through meds, counseling, individual therapy, and whatever else you need to make it work.

Good luck, and keep me updated.  Till we meet again, I remain, The Blogapist Who Says, As One to Another, You Sound Type A, But That Showering Thing Isn’t Helping Anybody.

Zach Galifianakis Thinks Being A Celebrity Is ‘Dumb’

Few people come away clean in Alejandro González Iñárritu’s “Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance),” a scathing satire that takes down Hollywood blockbusters, entitled actors, celebrity culture, entertainment journalism, critics and the entirety of social media with gleeful abandon. There are jokes about Robert Downey Jr., Jeremy Renner and Meg Ryan that leave bruises. A heavy Oscar favorite since it premiered at the Venice Film Festival in August, and this year’s closing night selection for the New York Film Festival, “Birdman” sets fire to so many bridges that it’s a surprise Dylan McKay isn’t the screenwriter. (In fact, Iñárritu, Nicolás Giacobone, Alexander Dinelaris and Armando Bo are the four credited writers.)

The existential tone of “Birdman” extended to the all-star cast during the film’s post-screening press conference on Saturday afternoon at the New York Film Festival. Amid shutter clicks and Instagram uploads, Michael Keaton, Edward Norton and Zach Galifiankis grappled with the notion of being celebrities in 2014.

“Being a celebrity is shit,” Galifianakis said when asked about blurring the lines between performance and reality for the film. “It’s dumb. I’m not interested in it. I like to be an actor and that’s it. The blurred lines are, I think, man-made. I think celebrity is a man-made thing. It’s not innate in us. We have people telling us we should pay attention to these people for the wrong reasons — their personal lives and that stuff.”

Galifianakis said the cast of “Birdman” — which also includes Emma Stone, Naomi Watts, Amy Ryan and Andrea Riseborough — held views similar to his own, before making special mention of his dislike for “picture taking” (an ironic comment considering the audience was busy capturing photos of Galifianakis during his response).

“I’m just being honest,” Galifianakis said. “I would rather do my work and go home and watch Lifetime or something.”

“I think everybody is kind of a celebrity now. Anybody can be anything,” Keaton added. The 63-year-old stars as Riggan Thomson in “Birdman,” a washed-up actor who became famous for playing a superhero and now hopes to save his career by putting on a Broadway production of Raymond Carver’s “What We Talk About When We Talk About Love.” (Keaton, a former Batman, has downplayed the surface similarities between Thomson and himself. “I related less to him than almost every other character I’ve played, in terms of the desperation,” he told Lane Brown at New York Magazine.)

“While [the public is] enamored by it, I guess, and buy magazines, I don’t think [celebrity] is a big deal anymore,” Keaton continued during the press conference. “I think everybody is kind of their own celebrity in their own head, and they kind of are. We’re living in this really weird world where people are everywhere. They’re omnipresent.”

Or, as Norton said: “The dog who runs into a wall dreaming is a bigger celebrity than anyone on this stage.”

“I worked with him,” Galifiankis joked of the dog. “Great guy.”

“Birdman” is out in limited release on Oct. 17.

What An Organized Person Thinks When They Enter Your Home

Everyone has that person in their life who takes their organization just a little too far for your comfort. Maybe it’s your friend without kids or even your mother-in-law — whoever it is you know exactly what you’re getting yourself into when you go visit them. But what happens if they go to your place?

As the self-proclaimed poster child for organization, I’ll break it down for you…

What You Think I Think: I could never live like this.
What I Actually Think: I wish I could live like this.

Am I proud of my organization habit? Sure, or I certainly wouldn’t be a self-proclaimed organization editor. Do I take it too far? Absolutely. In fact, I am jealous of you for embracing your clutter and coming to terms with the fact that the world will not end if you go to sleep when there are dirty dishes in the sink.

What You Think I Think: This would look so much better if…
What I Actually Think: I wonder if they have wine or I should have brought some over.

While I may look at my own stack of reading material and wonder if it is at a 45 or 90-degree angle on the coffee table, I don’t care if your magazines are so strewn about that we cannot even see the carpet or that you have books stacked out of size order in a leaning tower. I am at your home to spend time with you, not to critique it.

What You Think I Think: I hope they don’t mind if I start casually reorganizing.
What I Actually Think: I’m happy to help, but I’ll only do it if you ask!

If you invite me over as a guest, I am a guest. If you invite me over as an organizing expert, I am an organizing expert — simple as that. The roles do not overlap, and if you do want some help, chances are I will set up a separate time to dig deeper into whatever you want to accomplish in your space. At the end of the day, whether you believe it or not, dusting and color-coding are not always on my mind (but they definitely could be if you ask for assistance in those arenas).

What You Think I Think: And your cups don’t match because…
What I Actually Think: Can I have more wine?

This is a trickier one, only because I did graduate college and have just about zero desire to drink wine out of an oversized frat mug or a red plastic cup. That being said, it’s really alright if you didn’t order the fabulous new One King’s Lane wine glasses or made an effort to replace the now-mismatched sets you’ve broken. My cups match because I am a 45-year-old housewife at heart; yours don’t because you embrace the fact that you’re 25-years-old and don’t have a dishwasher.

What You Think I Think: Why didn’t they clean up before I came over?
What I Actually Think: Thank goodness they didn’t clean up for me.

If anything, it makes me uncomfortable when you clean just for me. In my mind, it says that you think I am overbearing and judgmental enough that I would care that much about your organization game. In other words, please stop forcing stuff in your closet and jamming your clothes in your drawers because you think it will make me feel better.

What You Think I Think: Next time, let’s go to my place.
What I Actually Think: Next time, I’ll definitely remember more wine.

If I avoided every place that wasn’t up to my organization standards, I would be missing out on some of the best dive bars New York City had to offer, I would be avoiding some of my best friends for an absurd reason and I would have broken up with my ex a lot sooner. I am a home editor at work, and I am a houseguest when I leave the office. It would be work to worry about anything else but cocktail hour and your company.
