Keith Haring x Terez Collection Launches Today on Terez.com

Terez, the New York-based ath-leisure brand, is collaborating with the estate of the late Keith Haring to develop the Keith Haring x Terez collection.
The partnership was forged in collaboration with Artestar, which represents high-profile artists,  photographers, designers and creatives.
Haring, who died in 1990, was known for his Pop Art and graffiti-like style, which grew out of the New York street culture of the Eighties. The collaboration was said to be heavily inspired by the power of love.
The pieces from Haring’s image library used for this collaboration were those that triggered joy through their vibrant colors, something that is a Terez signature, according to the brand.
The collection includes leggings, bras, tanks, Ts, crewnecks and joggers. Prices range from $ 60 for an uplifted heart-muscle T to $ 101 for a rainbow crowd printed jogger.
The collection launches today and is exclusively being sold at terez.com.

Megyn Kelly Apologizes Again for Blackface Comments Amid Criticism from Today Colleagues

Megyn Kelly began Wednesday’s episode of Megyn Kelly Today with two words: “I’m sorry.”

Holding back tears, the longtime journalist apologized again after defending white people who wear blackface on Halloween, asking why it was racist, during the show, Tuesday.

“I defended the idea, saying as long as it was respectful and part of a Halloween costume, it seemed okay. Well I am wrong and I am sorry,” she said.

“One of the great parts of sitting in this chair each day is getting to discuss different points of view. Sometimes I talk and sometimes I listen. And yesterday I learned,” Kelly, 47, continued. “I learned that given the history of blackface being used in awful ways by racists in this country it is not okay for that to be part of any costume, Halloween or otherwise.”

She added: “I have never been a PC kind of person. But I do understand the value in being sensitive to our history, particularly on race and ethnicity. This past year has been painful for many people of color. The country feels so divided and I have no wish to add to that pain and offense. I believe this is a time for more understanding, more love, more sensitivity and honor. I want to be part of that. Thank you for listening and for helping me listen too.”

A panel discussion on the issue between Kelly, Roland Martin and Amy Holmes followed the host’s statement — with her admitting at the end, “For my part, I have been listening and learning.”

RELATED: Megyn Kelly Asks if Wearing Blackface on Halloween Is Racist: ‘When I Was a Kid, That Was Okay’

Kelly’s apology came amid backlash for her comments, which were made during a discussion about censoring Halloween costumes with Jacob Soboroff, Melissa Rivers and Jenna Bush Hager during Tuesday’s episode.

“What is racist?” Kelly had asked. “Because truly you do get in trouble if you are a white person who puts on blackface at Halloween or a black person who puts on white face for Halloween. Back when I was a kid, that was okay as long as you were dressing up as like a character.”

“On Halloween, you’ve got guys running around with fake axes coming out of their heads. It’s going to be jarring,” Kelly said on Tuesday. “You gotta be able to take it.”

As an example, Kelly defended Real Housewives of New York City star Luann de Lesseps, who had previously apologized for wearing a Diana Ross costume on the Bravo show. “Who doesn’t love Diana Ross? She wants to look like Diana Ross for one day, and I don’t know how that got racist on Halloween,” Kelly said.

https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

Twitter was quick to respond, with stars like Patton Oswalt and Padma Lakshmi slamming Kelly’s views on social media.

“I cannot believe the ignorance on this in 2018,” Lakshimi wrote. “You are on national television. You have a responsibility to educate yourself on social issues @megynkelly. This is so damaging.”

Kelly’s Today show colleagues also spoke out about her comments during Today‘s 7 a.m. hour.

“The fact is, she owes a bigger apology to folks of color around the county,” Al Roker said. “This is a history, going back to the 1830s minstrel shows. To demean and denigrate a race wasn’t right. I’m old enough to have lived through Amos ‘n’ Andy where you had white people in blackface playing two black characters just magnifying the stereotypes about black people. And that’s what the big problem is. … No good comes from it. It’s just not right.”

“She said something stupid, she said something indefensible,” added Craig Melvin.

https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

Prior to Wednesday’s show, Kelly had issued an apology to her NBC colleagues in an internal email.

“One of the wonderful things about my job is that I get the chance to express and hear a lot of opinions. Today is one of those days where listening carefully to other points of view, including from friends and colleagues, is leading me to rethink my own views,” Kelly began in her email, obtained by PEOPLE.

“When we had the roundtable discussion earlier today about the controversy of making your face look like a different race as part of a Halloween costume, I suggested that this seemed okay if done as part of this holiday where people have the chance to make themselves look like others. The iconic Diana Ross came up as an example. To me, I thought, why would it be controversial for someone dressing up as Diana Ross to make herself look like this amazing woman as a way of honoring and respecting her?” she continued.

Kelly acknowledged that she now realizes “that such behavior is indeed wrong, and I am sorry. The history of blackface in our culture is abhorrent; the wounds too deep.”

The former Fox News anchor concluded by telling the NBC News staff that she is “honored to work with all of you every day.”

Prince William Just Revealed What Kate ‘Really’ Thinks About Him Being at a Motorcycle Race Today

Looking for adventure!

Motorcycle enthusiast Prince William flew to the Isle of Man for one of the world’s top races on Wednesday.

William, 35, who still rides a high-powered Ducati (which he recently used to get him to a soccer match with pals!), went to watch the famous festival on the small island between Britain and Ireland. And while the prince couldn’t wait to take in the event, his wife Kate Middleton didn’t share the same excitement.

William confessed Kate may have been a little skeptical of the intentions of his visit. When Laurence Skelly, the Isle of Man government’s minister for enterprise, asked him about her views. William told him, “When I said I was going to the Isle of Man for an official visit she said, ‘Really?’ ”

In the past, Kate has admitted to feeling “terrified” when her husband goes out on his motorcycle. And during a 2015 visit to Scotland, she said: “I’m going to keep George off of it!”

The annual Tourist Trophy (or TT race) is a major fixture in the motorcycling circuit. It began in 1907 and is one of the oldest motorsport events in the world.

As well as seeing a number of races, the prince met officials and support staff, and volunteers involved in the event.

William caught some of the final stages of the TT Supersport Race 2 before heading to a reception in the Government House Tent, where he met race staff and volunteers, civic dignitaries and representatives of local businesses.

He also spent time with the Joey Dunlop Foundation charity, which provides specialist accommodation for visitors to the Isle of Man with a disability.

In addition to his love of motorcycling, William would have flown near the race’s location while patrolling the Irish Sea on missions with the RAF Search and Rescue crews based at Anglesey. He once picked up a stricken sailor from the sea near the island.

The prince recently had the chance to test drive a bike during a visit to the headquarters of Triumph Motorcycles. There, he slipped a reflective jacket on over his blazer and sweater for a quick ride on the Triumph Tiger 1200. He also got to pose on a vintage model.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle Visited a Castle Today and the Photos Are a Fairy Tale Come True!

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle said a big “prynhawn da” (good afternoon in Welsh!) to Wales on Thursday, where cheering crowds welcomed them to the capital city of Cardiff.

The newly engaged couple stepped out at Cardiff Castle, a 2,000-year-old historic site that features Rapunzel-worthy towers and opulent interiors. The visit marked the latest milestone in the ongoing introduction of Meghan to the British public in the countdown to the royal wedding on May 19. Meghan honored the locale by pairing her black Stella McCartney coat with pants by Welsh brand Hiut Denim.

The couple was all smiles as they held hands while they greeted the crowds gathered outside the castle.

https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

Harry, 33, and the L.A.-raised Meghan, 36, were greeted by well-wishers before being given a taste of modern Welsh life and traditional culture. Among those pressed against the barrier — and displaying her American flag — was Julie Hoefer, 31, from Dundas, Va.

“We don’t have a royal family in America, and the whole idea is amazing,” she said. “And now we have one who joined the family — finally. It is super exciting.”

She hopes the flag will catch the couple’s eye so that they say hello. “That’s the goal,” says Hoefer, who teaches in Kuwait and is in the U.K. on vacation. Next to them was Cynthia Osborne, a retired nurse from Cardiff. She wrapped a Welsh flag around her red Stetson-style hat and held a bunch of daffodils, the national flower of Wales.

“Meghan looks lovely, a breath of fresh air,” said Osborne. “She sparkles — and I’d like to see the ring to see if it sparkles.”

The castle gates were thrown open to the public at 9 a.m., enabling as many as people as possible to join the crowds. Meghan and Harry’s last outing was in Brixton on January 9, and they are expected to make several more before their Windsor Castle wedding.

https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

Earlier, Cardiff’s city council leader Huw Thomas said they were delighted to “extend a warm Welsh welcome” to the couple, adding, “Their visit will aim to showcase some of the rich heritage and culture that we are very proud of here in Cardiff.”

After the excitement of the crowds, the couple watched performances from musicians and poets, met some famous local athletes and learn about the bodies that promote the Welsh language and cultural identity.

https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

Their second outing in the capital was scheduled at Star Hub, a community and leisure center in the eastern suburb of Tremorfa where they were set to hear how the center helps young people excel through sports. It is a key area of Harry’s public work and the charity StreetGames, which the prince has regularly worked with, will show off some of their local programs.

Kate Middleton Proved Her Mom Skills with This Quick-Thinking Move Today

Royal mom to the rescue!

When Kate Middleton, who is expecting her third child in April, came across a young boy who looked sick during a royal outing in Coventry on Tuesday, she immediately sprang into action.

“Princess Kate came over and give him a sickbag, our little Craig,” Carole Flynn, a learning mentor at Corpus Christi primary school, said. “I think he was a little bit overcome.”

Craig Skipper, a 10-year-old student at Corpus Christi, had been waiting for three hours in the cold to see the royal couple’s arrival.

“He went quite pale,” Flynn said. “She came over to speak to him, and noticed he was not very well. She asked if he was okay. She bent down and was concerned.”

Kate then went over to talk to one of her bodyguards and came back with a brown paper bag for him in case he got sick.

“It was lovely of her,” Flynn said. “She really took time with him. You can tell she is a mom, and has got that caring side.”

Fortunately, the bag turned out not to be necessary.

“He is a little bit better now,” Flynn added.

Kate wasn’t the only one putting her parenting reflexes to good use. Prince William expertly calmed down a little girl in the crowd who was crying because she wanted a hot chocolate.

“I have to go down now,” William told her before he had to go into the Coventry Cathedral for his next appointment. But before turning away to leave, he asked her if he should order her a hot chocolate — with marshmallows!

The young girl enthusiastically approved. “With lots of cream,” she said.

William was also given some advice for when the couple welcomes their third child in a few months — get lots of sleep.

Mom of three, Kelly Brown, who was in the crowd with her 2-year-old daughter, told reporters, “I told William ‘I’ve got three kids so get as much sleep as you can,’ and he laughed and said, ‘I’m trying.’ “

Selena Gomez Visits Childhood Home and Wonders If It ‘Could Have Been Better Than My Life Today’

Selena Gomez spent part of the weekend reflecting on her past — and taking a literal trip down memory lane.

The 25-year-old singer shared a photo of herself perched on the doorstep of the Texas home where she spent her youth, on Saturday, writing on Instagram, “The home I grew up in, from birth to 13… (no one was home when I knocked this time lol).”

“I visit this place every chance I get,” Gomez said. “In many ways it very well could have been better than my life today, but I’m grateful for a voice that can enable change today. Even when I don’t know how to do it well or actually want it. I love you Grand Prairie. Thank you.”

RELATED: Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez Kick Off the New Year with a Sweaty Pilates Session

There have recently been strains between Gomez and her mom Mandy Teefey, noticed by fans after the duo unfollowed each other on Instagram. But their recent estrangement wasn’t sparked solely by pop star’s newly rekindled relationship with Justin Bieber.

“It’s more complicated than just fighting over a guy,” a source close to the family previously told PEOPLE. “Mandy and Selena have had their ups and down before. This isn’t the first time.”

Though the mother and daughter weren’t on speaking terms toward the end of last year, Gomez “also wants to give her mom some space,” added the insider. “When they fight, they fight hard. But when they love, they also love hard.”

RELATED VIDEO: Selena Gomez Isn’t Currently Speaking to Mom Mandy Teefey and Wants to ‘Give Her Space’: Source

Multiple sources previously told PEOPLE Gomez’s family was concerned about the on-again romance and that Bieber was determined to show her loved ones he had matured.

An insider also confirmed that Teefey, 41, had voluntarily sought treatment at a hospital in Los Angeles in December but dismissed a report that it was because of an argument with her daughter over Bieber. “It’s been a stressful time for Mandy and she made the decision herself to go to the hospital and make sure everything was okay,” said the source.

After ringing in the new year together in Mexico, Bieber and Gomez headed to a private gym session in Los Angeles on Wednesday.

A source previously told PEOPLE that they welcomed 2018 in Cabo with friends, adding that the pair are “doing great.”

Carson Daly Pays Tribute to Dad as He Returns to Today After Parents’ Back-to-Back Deaths

https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

Carson Daly made an emotional return to the Today show on Thursday, paying tribute to his stepfather Richard Caruso, who died on Tuesday after a battle with bone cancer – just five weeks after the his mother Pattie Daly Caruso died of a heart attack.

“It’s been a rough month for my family,” Daly, 44, explained while sitting with co-anchors Matt Lauer, Savannah GuthrieAl Roker and Hoda Kotb on the NBC morning show.

“Last time I was here I was talking about my mom, who had unexpectedly passed away. She’d been the primary caregiver of my stepfather, who passed away on Tuesday now. His health was in peril, we know that was a foregone conclusion. Mom had been taking care of Dad. Mom was the one that went so quickly, and then we lost my Dad on Tuesday. It’s just been a crazy month. It’s just been really really hard.”

Daly explained that his biological father died when he was 5, and his mother Pattie married Richard  — whom he affectionately called “Pops” — three years later.

“He took us in,” Daly said. “He’s my role model, my mentor. Incredible guy. Old school — grew up in the depression. One of those guys who knew that life was going to be hard. Led by example, not by words. My mom had all the sayings and isms — you know, ‘You can shoot for the stars!’ And my dad woke up early, went to work, had a great deep personal faith that I later in life would gravitate towards. Again, led by example.”

“Family-first — we always had dinner in high school. He was like, ‘Hey, I don’t care what you do after, but we’re all going to have family dinner at 6 p.m. and then you can run off and go to the movies.’ That was dad,” Daly continued. “Drank Cutty Sark, worked hard, loved golf. Golf would be the sport that brought our relationship together. He taught me so much about life and really the man that I am. I’m grateful that I had 85 years with him. He was an incredible person.”

When Lauer told Daly that his parents must have been proud of him, the former TLR host got emotional.

“It’s hard to grasp that considering they were both healthy in June,” Daly said. “The enormity of this, the totality of a loss so soon, is still a struggle. But you’re absolutely right, we’re so blessed to have them both. They were incredible.”

“I realize the more pain that I feel losing my parents is testament to how much of an impact they made in my life,” he added. “They clearly equipped me with the tools to be able to handle it, and that’s because they were incredible parents.”

Before the end of the segment, Daly went on to express gratitude to his Today show family. “Thanks again to everybody here,” he said. “You guys are my family, and I love you guys.”

Earlier this month, Daly returned to Today to pay tribute to his mother, who died Sept. 17.

“When she walked in this room, she lit the place up,” Kotb told Daly on the Oct. 4 episode. “There was something special and unique.”

“She also stole everything!” said Daly with a laugh. “I’m telling you, going through her things, it’s an example of how much she loved life. She literally was a kleptomaniac. If it wasn’t nailed down, she took it. I’m talking about wine corks she would write on, ash trays, menus from around the world, rundowns from the Today show. She died at 73, but she lived a life that was passionately twice as much, so she really died at 146.”

“By the way, you guys gave my mom the greatest gift ever by employing me on the Today show, so she could watch me every single morning in her kitchen, and I know that she did,” he added. “There’s no place she’d rather have me be than right back here.”

Today airs weekdays beginning at 7 a.m. on NBC.

5 Compliments To Give Your Spouse Today

Loving words and compliments can go a long way in making a healthy marriage last.

Whether you have only been married for six months and it is still easy to find things to tell your partner that you love about them, or you have been married for several decades and your compliment bank is running on low, your partner enjoys hearing loving words of affirmation from you.

Here are five compliments that never get old. Your partner won’t tire of hearing these words come from your mouth and it will be a nice reminder that you haven’t checked out of your marriage.

1. “I love how you parent our children”

Moms and dads can both be unsure or insecure about their parenting skills. There is no required book or manual for it (unlike getting a driver’s license), so they are constantly wondering if they are doing it right or messing up royally.

Reassure your spouse frequently that you appreciate them as a parent and recognize that they are trying to do a good job raising your children. Tailor the compliment to be even more specific to their parenting style or a skill that they excel in, such as, “I love the way you play with the kids,” or “I’m so grateful you’re able to help our son with his math homework.”

2. “I’m so glad I married you”

After being in a regular, routine relationship for so long our partners can forget what first attracted you to them in the first place. Reminisce about the reasons that made you fall in love so long ago and remind your partner of those reasons. Then express how your life has changed and grown since then and why you are still grateful that you chose them to be your partner in this life.

3. “I appreciate you”

We get so situated and used to our marital roles and everyday tasks. Perhaps he works while you raise the kids. Maybe you both work and he manages the yard while you manage inside the home. Don’t take what the other person does for granted. Thank them for what they do for the family and point out specifically the work they’ve done. You can compliment them on a delicious dinner made, point out the extra hours they’ve been putting in at the office, or notice the new flowers that were planted in the yard. They’ll appreciate being appreciated.

4. “You look beautiful (handsome or hot)”

No matter how long you’ve been married, your partner still wants to know that you find them attractive. Remind them that they are still physically alluring to you by pointing it out. You’ll score bonus points if you can compliment specific things or features that are especially appealing to you, such as a new outfit, a fresh shave, or a new haircut.

5. “I love spending time with you”

Your partner wants to be appreciated and found attractive, but they also want to know that you still enjoy their company. Next time you are on a date or fun family outing, remind them of how much you enjoy being with them, then tell them the reasons why. Perhaps it is because they are so fun, easygoing or have a great sense of humor. Whatever it may be, remind them why you still like spending time with them.

So much of our world and interactions can be negative. We also often get into such a routine of living with another person that we forget to take the time to compliment them. We may be grateful for them in our minds, but not profess this audibly. Keep your marriage healthy and filled with love by complimenting your spouse regularly.

What 1970s Counterculture Can Teach Us About Resistance Today

“Dressing yourself for yourself is an activist act,” Fayette Hauser told The Huffington Post. “We felt that we were part of the revolution.”

Hauser was a member of The Cockettes, a San Francisco-based commune and creative collective John Waters once described as “hippy acid freak drag queens.” They were recognizable by their threads, which took inspiration from drug-fueled visions, foreign cultures, bygone eras and personal fantasies, amounting to hallucinatory ensembles that served as embodied rejections of mainstream America.

Hauser’s iconic threads are currently on view at New York’s Museum of Art and Design, part of the exhibition “Counter-Couture: Handmade Fashion in an American Counterculture. The show revisits the mind-warping fashions of the 1960s and 1970s that, in defiance of the consumerism-laced American Dream, opted to dream up alternative ways of dressing, protesting and being.

As curator Barbara Paris Gifford explained to HuffPost: “It was about rejecting materialist culture, not spending a lot of money. You could see something in a thrift store or in the trash and see the possibilities of what it could become, how it could express your values. It was about actively creating your own reality, instead of accepting the one that was handed to you.”

Born and raised on the East Coast, Hauser moved to San Francisco in 1968. One year later, she helped bring The Cockettes into being, an avant-garde experimental theatre troupe who, along with performing on stage, became living, breathing manifestations of their transcendent ideals.

The Cockette clan donned flowing facial hair, exaggerated makeup, glitter, jewels, furs, fishnet tights and feather headdresses, a non-categorizable onslaught of garments from a motley range of eras, locales, genders and styles. “We were in various characters of our own creation and imagination,” Hauser said.

“The mainstream was all caught up in trends,” she continued, “and we thought trends were much too shallow a reason to put something on your body, which was sacred. We were having these visions from using psychedelic drugs, and we wanted to visualize them. There was so much creative energy, everyone had gone deep into themselves through psychedelics.”

Another groundbreaking aspect of The Cockette’s living theater was their personification of gender fluidity and gender confusion. “People were embracing the male and the female inside themselves, making outfits that had both sexes in them,” said Hauser. The elaborate ensembles were sometimes dubbed “high drag,” in that they transgressed not only the boundaries of gender but also of reality. As Hibiscus, a founding Cockette, once said: “Instead of dressing in drag, I was dressing more as gods. We were all creating mythic figures.”

The oozing visuals induced by acid and mushrooms served as chief inspirations for artists like The Cockettes, along with countless other countercultural fashionistas who saw their bodies as sites of resistance, including Kaisik Wong; Alex + Lee; Birgitta Bjerke, and Mickey McGowan.

The pioneer of wearable art, Wong was known for his cosmic robes, gowns and headdresses whose metallic, mythical power paid tribute to the past while predicting the future. Bjerke, better known as 100% Birgitta, reportedly went nowhere without a bag of wool and crochet hooks, fashioning kaleidoscopic pastorals from the simplest of means.

These artists also, however, looked longingly to the past for visual stimuli. “We were very much looking at the past as a thing of beauty,” Hauser said. “The mainstream at the time was only looking forward. They were throwing everything away. We were looking at the past like it was great art, especially the old clothes. We had a large palette to choose from. Victoriana, art nouveau, anything vintage. We were dressing up our fantasies.”

Along with mining other time periods for aesthetic gems, many countercultural visionaries of the ‘60s and ‘70s looked to other cultures, from Peruvian handwoven textiles to dashikis, which were closely associated with the black power movement at the time. This is where things get a little complicated, because, as the photographic documentation makes abundantly clear, most people associating with this particular breed of “counter-couture” were white.

“Certainly what is happening now with identity, it can come off as feeling colonialist,” curator Gifford offered in response. “But that was not the feeling in this particular time period. It was out of respect, coming from a place of empathy. The movement came from a rejection of American mainstream culture, so there was a search for what is real and what is authentic.”

Gifford also added that much of the interest in other cultures’ clothing stemmed from the handiwork that was central to their construction. “I think the handmade aspect is at the center of it,” she said. Individuals were procuring handmade skills including sewing, embroidery and crochet, both from their own families and cultures abroad.

Sharing, also, was a central concept to hippie culture, which perhaps helps explain why, for people like Hauser, incorporating aesthetics and traditions from other civilizations felt like a gesture of respect, rather than exploitation. Although the cultural appropriation rampant throughout the show can hardly be excused by good intentions, Gifford and Hauser both continued to stress that the motivation to explore other cultures and stylistic traditions was rooted in admiration.

The “Counter-Couture” exhibition is now on view in New York City, in a time that bares striking similarities to the setting from which these works emerged. Like the 1960s and 1970s, many Americans today are disheartened with the current state of affairs, distrustful of the government’s agenda, and frightened for the fate of the planet. Gifford spoke of millennials and their revived interest in handmade, spiritual and local alternatives to the mainstream.

Specifically, Gifford referenced “pussy hats” ― the pink, knitted caps that swarmed the streets during the Women’s March in January. Handmade, symbolic, defiant, controversial, the hats alluded to something greater than themselves. “It’s a place to start,” she said. “Deciding that you are going to make something that is going to reflect who you are, what your politics are. And you made it yourself; there is a power in that.”

What contemporary youth can learn from their counterculture predecessors, Gifford says, is how to weave elements of resistance into daily life. “There was a lot of protest [in the 1960s and ‘70s], but also a lot of play,” she said. “Maybe we can use that moving forward, so we’re not always dealing with angry passion that burns out on itself. You want to keep people engaged and involved. How do you do that in the long term?”

The next generation of cultural resistance can also learn from the shortcomings of their predecessors, namely, their failure to address the struggles and fantasies of people of color. The imbalance remains relevant today, with January’s Women’s March raising crucial conversations about which bodies the protest empowered and which it left further alienated. The vanguard of millennial resistance, as the 1970s efforts make plain, must work toward forging a future where women-identified people of all backgrounds have the freedom and safety to indulge their imaginations, play make believe, and build revolutions out of sparkles, yarn and velvet.

What “Counter-Couture” ultimately reveals, though, is how protest can be made more sustainable when coupled with a generous dose of play. As Gifford said: “How do you not burn out? You make it a lifestyle. I think there is a lot to learn from that.”

“Counter-Couture: Handmade Fashion in an American Counterculture” runs until Aug. 20, 2017 at the Museum of Art and Design in New York.

Raw Food Diet: The Complete Guide for Every Meal of the Day Including Special Recipes of Raw Food Detox for Healthy Rapid Weight Loss and Vitality Today!

Let’s face it, it does not take rocket science to know that cooking kind of destroys a number of vitamins and nutrients that are naturally contained in several food items! This simply means that if your aim is to feed your body with the right amount of vitamins and nutrients, then you ought to look in the direction of eating more of your food in the raw state. Yes, you will automatically begin to feed your body with the real deal immediately you quit cooking every of your food items and start consuming them in their raw state. Do you know that a cooked carrot, for instance, cannot give the same amount of nutrient when compared with uncooked carrot? The truth is that an uncooked carrot is tremendously more nutrition than a cooked carrot. Well, besides that, another thing that cooking does is to change or alter the natural chemistry of food items, thus, making them rather more difficult to digest. This invariably explains why there are loads of digestive issues in this country! The fact that civilization brought along its own vices cannot be over emphasized as we know that primitive men did not go about eating cooked or processed food items. And guess what… no wonder they had longevity! But the truth is that when we consume cooked foods, what we are actually doing is that we are introducing foods into our body organs in a format that is alien to our original design. Yes, the way our organs were designed to absorb these foods is not in the cooked form. Therefore, consuming fresh produce, which are high in water content and high fiber food items have been known to stamp out constipation either of the cells, circulatory systems or bowels. Besides that, it also clears obstructions, thus aiding blood flow increase into every single cell in the body. This is significant for the fact that blood is known to deliver oxygen and nutrients to the cells while carrying away toxic wastes from the cells. Yet, another reason why anyone should consider raw food diet is the fact that ob

First Nighter: Henrik Ibsen’s “Peer Gynt” Jacked Up to Today, New York Neo-Futurists Attempt “The Great American Drama”

About Henrik Ibsen’s picaresque, not to say meandering, Peer Gynt, a friend of mine insists he’s never seen a successful production. (He claims the same about Thornton Wilder’s Skin of Our Teeth.) I can’t really recall ever seeing a go at Peer Gynt that satisfied me, either.

What I can now declare is that I hope I’m never again exposed to anything approaching the Peer Gynt revisacal–at the Mezzanine Theatre at the spanking new A.R.T./New York Theatres–that I disliked from its first ear-splitting chord. It’s a sky-high-decibel travesty perpetrated by Michi Barall, who wrote the update, Paul Lieber and Matt Park, who collaborated on the music, and Jack Tamburri, who directed and “originally conceived” the ill-conceived enterprise.

To be completely accurate, the Ma-Yi Theater Company undertaking is called Peer Gynt and the Norwegian Hapa Band. The brash Norwegian Hapa combo is arranged on a raised level behind the floor playing area where the seven troupe members unleash their acting when they do or don’t put down whatever instrument he or she plays.

The sounds they produce can be termed heavy metal or punk or grunge or call it what you will. I know what I’d call it, but cooler impulses prevail. Let’s just say you’ve heard it all before over the last few decades with nothing new added. Incidentally, they do work in a few licks from Edvard Grieg’s Peer Gynt musings.

For those who’ve been spared Ibsen’s take on Norway’s venerable mythic figure, Peer (guitar-playing Park) is a fellow uncertain about his goals and from the git-go at unpleasant odds with haranguing mother Ose (keyboard-playing Mia Katigbak).

To find himself and also hoping to find a mate, he sets out on a journey that over the years takes him many places but is ultimately a can’t-get-no-satisfaction trek. Since the clangorous Norwegian Hapa Band is not there for nothing, one of Peer’s first modern-day aspirations is to be a rock star. No surprise there, huh? Before and after that there are other stops and other dalliances, such as one with taunting Ingrid (violin-sawing Angel Desai).

Perhaps the most annoying aspect of the Barall-Lieber-Park-Tamburri assault is the incessant use of obscenities. (For the moment set aside the repeated employment of “awesome,” the favorite adjective in today’s television advertisements.) The creators might argue that were Ibsen writing today, he would have made free with the four-, seven- and 12-letter words.

No, he wouldn’t have, not on this sophomoric (and soporific) level. A determined social critic, he wouldn’t have played down to the level at which this Peer Gynt is pitched.

For the record, bassist Uton Onyejekwe, drummer-mandolinist Titus Tompkins, keyboardist Rocky Vega and bandleader-guitarist Lieber are the other performers doing their damnedest–perhaps too much–to rustle up hotsy-totsy theater. What they’re doing, however, isn’t quite deft enough. Meredith Reis is the set designer and Oliver Jason the lighting designer.

Asta Hostetter is the costume designer and runs up a rock-star suit for Peer that has some spark and several va-voom outfits for Desai to fill seductively. Chad Raines is the sound designer, and, boy oh boy, does he have a challenge that he meets as well as he can.
******************
The Great American Drama isn’t a bad idea. Created by Connor Sampson, co-directed by Greg Taubman and written by Sampson, Nicole Hill, Dan McCoy and Katy-May Hudson, it’s a product of the New York Neo-Futurists.

In a way the title tells you everything you might want to know. The ensemble intends to present the best drama they can. The manner is which their aim will be accomplished is through including everything they’ve learned audiences expect as superior fare through surveys they’ve held–right down to puppets.

What ensues as they run down the long list of requirements–at the Jeffrey and Paula Gural Theatre/A.R.T. New York Theatres (see above)–is a series of skits involving romance, thrills, chills, you-name-it (which those surveyed have already done for you). The catch is that the skits aren’t nearly as amusing as the hard-working performers think they are.

At the end of the 90-or-so-minute show–after all the projections have flashed, filling in the dramaturgical requirements, and the puppets have been manipulated–the four performers ask if they’ve reached their great-American-drama goal. They receive a very strong rating. Only a small number of the audience members, including this one, demurred. So you can take it from there.

Talk about a #FlashbackFriday!

Matt Lauer celebrated his 20th anniversary as co-anchor of the Today show on Friday — and in honor of the big day, viewers got a chance to rewind the clock and take a look back at the journalist’s first day on the job on January 6, 1997.

In the clip, Lauer takes the desk with his first NBC co-anchor Katie Couric, live from studio 1A at Rockefeller Plaza as fans cheered happily with signs outside.

“And welcome to Today on this Monday morning. A very special Monday morning for our friend Matt Lauer,” said Couric. “You want to hear it again? One more time, let’s hear it.”

“This is Today, with Katie Couric and Matt Lauer … and Matt Lauer,” the announcer repeated as the set laughed.

“It feels strange,” Lauer confessed. “A friend of mine said: ‘No matter how many times you’ve been in that seat in the past — and it’s been like 150 times — it will be different on Monday morning.’ And he was right. A couple of times during the show just remind me to breathe. That would help me.”

//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

Couric asked him if he slept alright over the weekend leading up to his first day, and Lauer revealed he started feeling the nerves on Friday after his predecessor Bryant Gumbel‘s final show.

“I wasn’t nervous until Friday — and I want to say I’m looking forward to working with you,” Lauer told Couric. “Friday did make me nervous. I hope you had a chance to see Friday’s show. It was a fitting tribute to Bryant who richly deserves it and it started to get me a little bit nervous.”

“I talked to Bryant over the weekend a couple of times. He was coming down from the emotion of the day,” he added. “He also helped me calm my nerves. So Bryant, if you’re watching, thanks for that, and go back to bed — you’ve earned the extra sleep.”

Lauer, now 59, began working with NBC in the early 90s, filling in as a newsreader on the Today show when needed before joining as a full-time anchor in 1994. He was officially named co-anchor in 1997, working alongside Couric, after Gumbel stepped down.

And the throwback footage isn’t the only way the network celebrated the special anniversary: They also brought along Lauer’s longtime co-host Savannah Guthrie, who is currently on maternity leave, to surprise him.

//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

“Matt, you know this, but I’ve looked up to you all my life, because you’re so old,” Guthrie joked. “I just want to say, we adore you … One of the things that is so wonderful about you is that from the second I walked in here, one of the things I noticed is that Matt knows every single person’s first name and last name. He knows the name of their dog. He knows how their mother is doing.”

Design Experiment From The 1980s Should Inspire Artists Protesting Trump Today

This is an important and calling time for artists,” Polish artist Krzysztof Wodiczko expressed in a statement.

This sentiment has been gaining traction around the nation as artists appalled with the results of the recent presidential election turn to art as a vehicle for communication, catharsis and resistance. However, Wodiczko did not write this statement in 2016. He wrote it in 1988, during the Ronald Reagan administration.

At that time, Wodiczko was using art to address the glaring wealth disparity plaguing New York City, evidenced by the tens of thousands of homeless individuals living in abandoned buildings and on city streets each night. Many of these individuals had been thrown out of mental hospitals and halfway houses because of federal subsidy cuts, Wodiczko says, or pushed out of low-income housing by burgeoning real estate moguls like ― yes ― Donald Trump.

Trump was only one of a large number of real estate corporations that were basically owning Manhattan.
-Krzysztof Wodiczko

“Donald Trump was, at that time, part of an aggressive real estate development process,” Wodiczko, now a professor in residence at Harvard University who spends much of his time in the U.S., explained to The Huffington Post in a phone interview this week. “Very rapid, uneven development. With the building of new housing and real estate projects for upper-middle-class residents, there was also a process of destruction of the buildings where poor people lived. Trump was only one of a large number of real estate corporations that were basically owning Manhattan. But he was special because of the visibility and upfront decor which was appealing to those who are in love with richness.”

In response to the changing landscape of New York City in the late ‘80s, and the many people this rapid development left behind, Wodiczko created a series of “Homeless Vehicles,” retro-futuristic objects melding art and industrial design, meant to serve the homeless population directly and immediately, while engaging others who might ordinarily look away.

“My first instinctual response was to try to design something to help people, to ameliorate their conditions as an act of emergency help,” Wodiczko said. “I started to speak with homeless people, collecting and recording what they said. Step by step, I realized this vehicle would offer emergency help, but also have informative and symbolic functions, articulating through design all the needs of homeless people that should not exist in a civilized world.”

The vehicles ― four-wheeled metal carts topped with rounded, silver cylinders, meant to house recyclable items and other emergency supplies used and collected by homeless individuals ― feel like alien spaceships ripped from another dimension. Or high-tech weapons whose images float, untethered to actual science, in our anxious minds. They not only address homelessness but embody it, through their unheimlich ― or literally, “unhomely” ― aesthetic.

Marked off in black and yellow safety tape, the sci-fi forms are viscerally jarring. In a society that often relegates problems such as homelessness to invisibility, these uncanny devices demand attention. Their resounding strangeness is sprinkled with echoes of familiar visions, too. The vehicle’s shape recalls the shopping carts upon which so many people experiencing homelessness rely. Plastic bottles and cans, which many homeless people collect and sell, can rest inside the carts.

The “Homeless Vehicles” project, Wodiczko said, is therefore both symbolic and practical. In the 1990s homeless men and women would wheel them through urban city streets, highlighting their realities while serving to distribute free emergency supplies to individuals in need. The vehicles made homelessness impossible to ignore, through a design that made America’s most overlooked population resemble a squad of otherworldly adventurers.

“It was an exposition and articulation of the unacceptable conditions of their lives,” Wodiczko explained. “People should not need this kind of equipment. The utopian vision of this kind of project was based on the hope that its very function would eventually make it obsolete. I wanted to contribute to the understanding of the unacceptability of the situation, and bring people closer to the homeless.”

Artnet’s Blake Gopnik shared an image of a Homeless Vehicle in front of Trump Tower on Monday, a reminder of just how much has changed ― and how much has not ― since 1988. In fact, Wodiczko’s artist statement is strangely profound in light of Trump’s recent election:

I commend artists moving against populism and the visual culture that promotes and perpetuates some oversimplified thinking that politicians disseminate. Populism plays on the fantasies and nostalgia of dissatisfied people who feel hopeless, proposing a neo-nationalist focus, and resorting to simplistic ‘solution’ concepts in order to mobilize the masses.

When asked his opinion on our nation’s new president-elect, Wodiczko was blunt. “I share the reaction with half of the people in this country,” he said. “It’s not necessary to even explain it. So many people have the same feeling of disappointment and fear. I can immediately see the very dangerous impact of the policies Trump is proposing for immigrants, masses of people who are part of our society and our culture, who have lived here for many years, and who contribute to the economy and culture. Now they fear being deported, their families being broken into pieces.”

Wodiczko sees a strong parallel between homeless and immigrant populations, as both are “agents who spread the visibility of the condition of democracy,” although they too often remain unseen. To counter this cultural epidemic, Wodiczko has made both populations subjects of and participants in his work. His “Immigrant Instruments” use a similarly sci-fi infused visual language to turn conceptual problems into physical interventions.

One instrument, dubbed an “Alien Staff” in 1992, takes the shape of an adjustable staff with a video screen and speaker at the head, inspired by the look of a biblical shepherd’s rod. The staff operator mans the instrument, confronting strangers and sharing the story of her unique immigration process through a pre-recorded video which plays on the staff’s screen. A technologically mediated conversation ensues, with the staff as the third party uniting difference. Through genuine sharing, both “alien” and “stranger” are in some way rendered alien and strange, bringing people closer together.

type=type=RelatedArticlesblockTitle=Related… + articlesList=5826088ae4b02d21bbc8796a,582358c5e4b0d9ce6fc05d24,58233febe4b0d9ce6fc03c5a

Whether through a “Homeless Vehicle” or an “Immigrant Instrument,” the artist uses his creative interventions to bring unlike populations of people into direct contact, bringing them face to face for a simple, human conversation. “To give an opportunity to those whose voice is not heard, who have no face, who think they don’t make any difference,” the artist said.

If Wodiczko were to have the same opportunity with the new president-elect, a chance to talk to Donald Trump one on one, face to face, he would issue him a stern warning. “I would tell him to start thinking about the implication of all of the ideas that helped him become the president and all of the contradictions still hidden within them,” he said. “It’s time to reevaluate and rethink his program. Think of people, of everybody, who will be affected. Change all of this, make a program and agenda to be useful for living rather than for dying.”

Although Wodiczko likely won’t be speaking directly to Trump anytime soon, his message is urgent and universal. No longer can voices go unheard, can faces go unseen, can fear and hatred masquerade as populist rhetoric. It’s time to have difficult and honest conversations as human beings, about our wants and our needs, the same today as they were nearly 30 years ago.

It is time for artists to draw attention to those people, those voices, those wants and those needs, by any means necessary.

Schools of Tomorrow, Schools of Today: What Happened to Progressive Education (History of Schools and Schooling, V. 8)

Schools of Tomorrow, Schools of Today documents some of the child-centered progressive schools founded in the first half of the twentieth century and provides histories of some more contemporary examples of progressive practices. Part I discusses seven progressive schools founded in the first part of the twentieth century (Francis W. Parker; Organic; Park; City and Country; Lincoln; Dalton; Arthurdale), tracing them from their beginnings to the present, or until their regrettable demises. Part II examines four more contemporary schools (Butterfield; Free Union Country; Urban Academy; W. Haywood Burns), showing how progressive practices gained momentum from the 1960s onward. As a volume in the History of Schools and Schooling series, this book seeks to look to the past for what it can teach us today. The lessons from the past about what has happened to progressive education hopefully will inform contemporary debates.

The Word “Flattering” Is the #1 Enemy of Feminism Today

The worst compliment, in my eyes, isn’t “bubbly.” It isn’t even the auspicious “such a character.” The most backhanded, undermining and secretly mean thing you can say to somebody is to describe their sartorial choices as “flattering.” Not only is this a boring waste of words, but it also very much subtly implies that something about the person you’re offering probably unsolicited comment on needs said flattery; that without flattery this person is rendered in some way unacceptable.

And, not to turn this into a feminist issue (just kidding), you never, ever hear the word flattering in relation to a boy. Never are they applauded for covering up a balding head or concealing a could-be-pregnancy belly. So why are we so very used to hearing it in terms of the girls and their constantly perceived and pointed-out flaws? It’s annoying, unfair and turns clothes and makeup into a stressful, never-ending game of fixing – and it needs to stop.

To waste ones aesthetic choices entirely on trying to make oneself look better (read: more acceptable) is a borderline tragedy. If everyone is trying to “flatter” themselves into the same standardized image of attractiveness, everyone is molding themselves into the same bland abstraction of femaleness. And worse, no one is trying out things for fun, or to be different, or just to see what it looks like. A culture of fear-of-mistakes settles around how people dress or do their makeup, and that’s a sad thing.

Because, let’s be honest, a lot of what I do to myself isn’t what other people would think of as a “flattering” choice. I’ve been cultivating a uni-brow for the past year, and just recently taken to clipping my fringe into a center parting like a caricature of a nerd. I’m not interested in “flattering” my apparently problematic face and body, I don’t want to fix my imperfections and distract from my flaws. There is and should be an element of subjectivity here. One man’s “flattering” is another man’s “good God, what on earth is that?” That’s a good thing. And I’d rather elicit the “good God” response than the pernicious “flattering” any day.

So next time you sense some anxiety seeping into your getting-ready routine, take a moment. You pretty much look how you look, and there’s no point fearing that you’ve not adequately disguised your “problems”. Your problems aren’t problematic, they just exist. Instead of thinking about them, think about that exciting new metallic lipstick or those gloriously ugly shoes. By wearing something deliberately a bit off-key, the rest of you will look much more aesthetically pleasing in comparison. Now that’s the kind of flattering I can get on board with.

How Keeping a ‘Today I Failed At’ Notebook Can Bring You Success

The first time I ever sang in public was two years ago in one of Greece’s most prestigious Theatre-arts audition rooms in front of some of the most celebrated actors, vocal coaches and directors of my birth country. Five days later I called and found out I hadn’t been accepted. I was devastated for an afternoon but the next morning I had university classes to attend to so I pulled myself together and plotted my next move.

2015-08-21-1440167364-145753-11938021_1636924349884181_6167239_n.jpg

At that time, I relied on physics laws to force me off the ground but it was only after I read Thrive that I was ready to plan my Failure crusade — corps. During my first encounters with failure, I was living by two scientific rules:

1. Inertia is “the property of matter by which it retains its state of rest or its velocity … so long as it is not acted upon by an external force”. One can either see failure as an intruding force in life and let it stop one’s movement or, rather, as an identifying force of life and continue undistracted. Once inertia is destigmatized, it reveals its motivating persona

2. Resilience is “the amount of potential energy stored in a material when deformed” and young cells are proven to be the most resilient. I perceive of all amateurs- college applicants, job seekers, new mothers, dieters, as being young. Failure must be seen as a deconstructive rather than a demolishing force. Resilience gives amateurs no other choice than to channel their potential energy into reconstruction

Crafting these quotes, I urged myself to stay restless and hungry for life. I made a bucket list of experiences and started crossing things off. As Arianna Huffington states in Thrive, some jobs are concluded once you admit to yourself that they will never happen. Making the best of my limit — oblivion, I would overreach and fail and then I would under reach and fail again. Once this book landed in my hands, I had set up an immune system for failure but was seeking for advise to turn this into something productive.

2015-08-21-1440168722-2325103-hiking.jpg

Little by little, simple suggested practices turned into essential habits of my everyday life. I started hiking, organizing my diaries and reviewing them, taking on new projects and giving up on old ones. I would quote passages to my family and friends and then follow up with my own interpretations. Arianna Huffington will not drag you to the finish line but will cheer your way through the track. She helped me build a self coaching — non psychologist mediated — system. She gave me what I needed to turn failure into possibility.

I moved on to set up my Today I Failed At notebook, along with a Facebook page to introduce it. My fail-book, is an everyday diary that consists of six simple sections:
1. Date — section
2. Today I failed at — section where I write what I did not achieve today
3. Comments I gathered — section
4. Feelings — section
5. Do I persist — section (with yes and no tick boxes)
6. If yes, thoughts on adjustments — section

2015-08-21-1440167034-7069494-ScreenShot20150821at1.15.53PM.png

Today I Failed At users must commit to the following ground rules:
1. Admit irreversible defeat and let go
and most importantly,
2. Revise the adjustments section once a week

After a few months of Today I Failed At coaching, here are my re-adjusted failure quotes:

Nothing will be perfect in the end. Life is not a classroom with predictable pop quizzes. It will throw failures your way again and again. The more you are prepared for them, the more appreciative you’ll be of success

People who have only succeeded have died young. Take Huffington’s advise, redefine success and work for it

Always compare yourself to others. Are you healthy? Do you have food on the table? Do you have a family? Do you live in a peaceful country? Do you have freedom? Do you have access to education? As many times as you fail there’s always someone out there who only wishes to have had your luck. Quit misery. Be grateful

Nurture failures, not champions. Celebrate your children’s defeats as indicators of evolution. Embrace the opportunity and teach them about quitting, re-strategizing and being fearless. Help them dive into life

-You might feel powerful when you don’t know what your limits are but you will only thrive, once you make them work to your advantage

Become a thriving failure crusader.

7 Things That Get Me High Today (Instead of Booze)

This was originally published at TheFix.com

A lot of people will say that one of the hardest things about sobriety is learning how to have free time. The time that would typically be spent using and getting high is suddenly an intimidating emptiness. For many people, free time is dangerous because it allows them to dwell on missing the high, craving the high. As I’ve witnessed too many times, this can often lead to relapse. So how do you fill a void in your life? Simple: Fill it with something else, something healthier.

Since getting sober, I’ve realized getting high is a state of mind. I would consider getting high to be anything that alters your state of mind in a seemingly positive way — anything that makes you feel above your average self. Alcohol used to do this for me, but since getting sober two years ago, I’ve had to find a number of replacements. The upside of these replacements? They don’t negatively affect my decision-making abilities or get me into trouble with the law or anyone else. The downside? Well, there really isn’t one.

1. Running/lifting/exercise in general. While I’ve yet to experience that runner’s high (I mean, come on, when done running five miles, most people just wanna curl up and cry), exercise still puts me in a clear frame of mind that not much else does. I feel empowered and confident afterwards, much like I felt when I was drinking, but this is actually real. It’s a very healthy time filler, but also has the danger of becoming a cross-addiction–in other words, a replacement for the addiction you are fighting. As with everything in life, moderation is key.

2. Reading. I really, really missed books when I was drinking. Between homework and required reading, I never made time to read for fun. Any free time was spent drinking or recovering from drinking. Now that I’m sober (and no longer have homework), I’ve rediscovered the world of books. They’re so simple to get lost in. Hours can pass when I’m reading and I barely notice–much like a drunken haze, except I’m taking in valuable information instead of making a fool of myself. I think it’s clear which is the better choice.

3. Spending time with the people I love. Sometimes I’m just watching TV with my family, or eating dinner, and it crosses my mind how lucky I am to have people who love me unconditionally. I, as do many people, too often take that for granted when so many people don’t have love like that in their lives.

4. A real relationship. There’s not much that compares to looking at a person when they’re performing a mundane task, such as washing dishes, and literally feeling love fill you up and almost well over. I never had this until I got sober, and I still have trouble believing the relationship I am in really exists. I have trouble believing anything that’s not a drug can make me feel the way a loving relationship does, but it’s true. A real relationship has made me confident, happy, content in my own skin — all things I searched for through drinking before. Now, I don’t have to.

5. Coming home to my pets. This is such a brief part of my day, but a huge part of theirs. It’s an affirming feeling to know that both your absence and presence matter to someone, even if that someone is a furry, four-legged friend who expresses his love through hurling his 80-pound body at you the second you walk in the door. Pets have a way of really making you feel as if you matter, and they have an insight unlike that of humans.

6. Speaking about sobriety. When I first got sober at Hazelden (a rehab center), I swore that the second I was out those doors, I was never walking back in. Not because I planned on staying sober, but because I hated it that much. A few months after being discharged, I walked back in willingly to speak to a group of patients. It was then that I realized the importance of sharing experiences. Something happens when you tell your story and you see it resonate with someone, even just one person. A light appears in their eyes and they think, “Oh, I’m not the only one.” I know because I was one of those patients, and someone who spoke impacted me that way. That day, she was just a person with a story like mine. Today, she is my sponsor and close friend. The same is true of me for one of the patients I spoke to. Life has a funny way of repeating itself. Speaking about my journey still hurts sometimes, but I also learn something about myself each and every time.

7. Writing. I saved the best for last. Flannery O’Connor once said, “I write because I don’t know what I think until I read what I say.” I truly believe those words. I would not still be sober if it weren’t for writing as an outlet. Writing, whether for myself or an audience, has made me see the reality of the way I was living when I was drinking. Some people are visual, and I am one of them. Seeing raw, honest words in front of me has a way of driving home a point more than simply thinking something does. In addition to that, knowing other people read what I write and draw something from it holds me accountable. I don’t want to let myself down, but more than that, I don’t want to let them down. Writing, once published, is permanent — so the actions that accompany it should be intentional and honest. Readers deserve nothing less.

This Makeup Artist’s Monster Transformations Are The Scariest Things You’ll See Today

Special effects and makeup artist Emily Anderson’s Instagram page is one you won’t be able to unsee. But we’re not sure whether that’s a good or bad thing.

The 23-year-old’s account is filled with hauntingly awesome makeup transformations turning Anderson into monsters, gremlins and villains. Armed with lots of water-based paints, highly-pigmented shadow palettes and patience, she’s morphed her upper body into three-dimensional versions of Doomsday, Medusa and Gizmo.

emily anderson makeup

Anderson honed her makeup artistry skills at the Cinema Makeup School in Los Angeles and on the sets of film, TV shows and music videos, including “Lizzie Borden’s Revenge,” “American Horror Story” and David Guetta and Nicki Minaj’s “Hey Mama.”

She began dabbling with monster transformations back in 2014, and picked it up again in March. “I was inspired originally by body paint that pro wrestler Finn Balor had worn actually,” she told The Huffington Post. “I ended up having the chance to do his body paint for a match in San Jose for Wrestle Mania Weekend.”

To help seamlessly blend the makeup out into the crevices and folds of her skin, Anderson uses a total of four makeup brushes and sometimes the BeautyBlender. For more heavy duty long-wear makeup looks, she reaches for airbrush paints.

All of Anderson’s monster transformations seem incredibly complex to achieve. “The raptor was pretty complicated because of the angles involved, but some of the Disney scenes or Gizmo took more detail,” she said. “I try to challenge myself each time so they are all a little difficult or complicated for me to work out in some way!”

emily anderson makeup

When it’s time to take it all off, she swears by soap and water for the water-based paints, 99-percent alcohol to remove the airbrush and alcohol colors, and Neutrogena makeup remover wipes for anything that’s left over.

See some of Emily Anderson’s most gruesome transformations below and head over to her Instagram page for more looks.

Geeking Out With Misty Copeland’s First Ballet Teacher On The Bigness Of Today

misty copeland

“I realized that I could put her body into positions and she could hold them and all of the positions were beautiful.”

Tuesday morning, the American Ballet Theatre stopped delaying the inevitable and finally appointed Misty Copeland a principal ballerina. The first black principal in ABT’s 75-year history, Copeland is also a bonafide cultural icon — a Time cover star with more than a half a million followers on Instagram. As Copeland’s famously varied fans could tell you, the 32-year-old is a true anomaly: neither white nor lanky, but blessed with a physically extraordinary body deemed by short-sighted gatekeepers early in her career as unfit for ballet.

The challenges started early for Copeland. Much of her childhood played out in a two-room motel suite with five siblings and a single mom in San Pedro, California. She also came dauntingly late to ballet: she was 13, an age when most future students have been training half their lives, when a ballet teacher coaxed the shy, watchful girl down from the bleachers at the San Pedro YMCA to join a class unfolding in the gym. That teacher was Cindy Bradley, a soft-spoken former company dancer who would go on to play an intimate and complex role in Copeland’s life, even raising the dancer in her home for a time amidst an ugly custody battle.

We rang Bradley at her studio, where she continues to teach ballet. In between conversations with students, she told us what it feels like when a teacher’s wildest dreams come true.

Here is a blast from the past – Capezio ad when Misty was a spokesperson circa 2002: ENJOY!

Posted by Misty Copeland on Thursday, August 26, 2010

What has today been like?
The phone keeps ringing! It’s just incredible.

What was it that led you to persuade Misty to join your class that day, nearly two decades ago?
The fact that she was watching so intently and that she seemed very shy. I knew she had to be asked. She wouldn’t come down without being asked. She was 13, and she was just tiny.

Did you see something in her immediately?
When she came down, she took the bar and we started class and I realized that I could put her body into positions and she could hold them and all of the positions were beautiful. I knew immediately that she was extremely gifted.

Was it her build, or some innate ability?
It was the lines. I would take her leg and pull it out, extend it, and then take her foot and point it and say, “Ok, hold that.” She was able to make beautiful lines from the beginning. She just had all the makings of a beautiful dancer.

misty copeland

Where dancers typically master the art of standing on pointe over the course of several years, Copeland — seen here at age 14 — took just three months, according to Bradley.

And no training.
She was on her drill team at middle school, but that was it.

You’ve said before that you were struck with a vision of a possible future for the little girl in front of you. Does today’s news come close to what you saw in your mind on that basketball court?
I think at the time, I was seeing her potential of what she could do as a dancer. I also knew that she could possibly be in a position of being a role model. But all of this took the incredible hard work — continuous hard work — by Misty. I knew she was going to do great dancing, but this is just almost too impossible to even dream of.

Do you see her young self when you watch her dance today?
Absolutely. We actually just got back from New York City where we saw her do “Swan Lake.” When I look into her eyes, she is still that sweet girl. That heart that we fell in love with is still there, that I think the world has fallen in love with. They’ve fallen in love with Misty, not just her dancing.

“I will forever fight, performing like it’s my last show.” #lifeinmotion

This V. Wise Cat Understands How Hard It Is To Be An Artist Today

“Sometimes people ask me, is it harder to be a director because you’re a cat? I mean, sure, sometimes it’s hard to get a director to take you seriously when you have paws instead of hands or whatever. But most of the people I meet are honestly really great.”

This is Emily. She’s a cat; a lady cat, to be specific. And an aspiring filmmaker. And she gets it.

She knows what it’s like to compare yourself to your peers and hate yourself for it. She understands having big ideas but no cash or time to make it happen. She gets it when you spend hours stalking success stories on Twitter and IMDB and dive headfirst into a shame spiral. She’s a smart kitty.

Amy Sherman-Palladino Says ‘Gilmore Girls’ Couldn’t Exist Today

“Gilmore Girls” creator Amy Sherman-Palladino says TV has changed so much in the past 15 years, the show simply couldn’t exist today.

“Today, you don’t sell ‘Gilmore Girls,’ nobody buys it,” Sherman-Palladino, the show’s co-creator, said on Saturday during her panel ahead of the “Gilmore Girls” reunion at ATX Television Festival. She argued that it was only because of the lack of bureaucratic obstacles from the Warner Bros. network that “Gilmore Girls” was able to flourish as it did when she first sold the idea for the show in 2000.

“It was a time when a network wasn’t looking for a cohesive brand,” she continued. “Their brand was about the individual voices of the show.”

Sherman-Palladino is an especially individual voice, to say the least. “I don’t like rules,” she quipped.

“They kind of just left us alone, which doesn’t happen anymore,” she said. “We kind of just ran wild like crazy meth kids around the Warner Brothers lot.”

One of the things she and her husband and co-creator, Dan Palladino, did with that freedom was to cast Milo Ventimiglia without even having a part for him. She thought he was “cute” and decided to sign him before someone else did, before ever thinking up the role of Jess.

That free rein, though, came to an end. Ultimately, Sherman-Palladino left before the final season, due to contract disputes as the WB switched over to become the CW.

“It’s always a bummer when you have to end things,” she said. “I had hoped there would be a call, like, ‘Hey, it’s the last episode, do you want to end it?’ But that didn’t happen.”

“It was a wonderful, golden time,” she added with a sigh. “But it ended.”

5 Things to Do Today to Save Your Relationship

The decline of a relationship is an awful thing to experience. More often than not, the process starts slowly, and we hardly notice little ways we may be pulling back or growing apart. Eventually, negative dynamics start to evolve, then persist for so long that we have trouble knowing where to start when it comes to repairing the relationship.

When thinking about where things went wrong, it’s important to recognize that a lot of what we do to ruin our relationships has to do with us. Much of how we act is based on programming from our past and defenses we’ve built that cause us to overreact, distort or even provoke the people we feel closest to. Because the only person we can control or change in a relationship is ourselves, it’s almost always worth it to do what we can to develop ourselves before we throw in the towel with our partner.

When things get complicated with someone we love, sometimes the best thing to do is go back to the basics and keep things simple. We can start by setting aside that giant case we’ve long built against our partner and starting fresh with simple acts of kindness, affection and love. This doesn’t mean living in a fantasy or avoiding dealing with real issues, but it’s a means of reconnecting with warm, loving feelings we may have cast aside. It’s a quest to reignite what worked about the relationship, so we and our partner are on the same team and in a better place when it comes to dealing with problems. Here are five things that can help any couple turn this important corner.

1. Express love in a way your partner would experience as loving
This may not sound like a very specific or especially scientific suggestion, but so often we forget to attune to our partner and do the things we know make them feel loved. Particularly when there’s tension in the relationship, we tend to focus on what we’re getting (or not getting) over what we’re giving. We build a case against our partner, and as a defense, we withhold our affections and resist being open and vulnerable.

The more distance created, the more ready we are to feel critical or put our guard up. We start to live more inwardly, getting in our own heads, quantifying, judging or indulging in a tit-for-tat mentality about what our partner does and doesn’t do for us. The truth is, it feels really good to be loving. Studies even show that people get more pleasure from giving than receiving. It’s important to pay attention to our partner and engage in kind actions that he or she would perceive as being cared for. For instance, getting flowers or going out to dinner may feel like romantic gestures to us, but to our partner, they may prefer taking some time to joke around or be affectionate. Try to offer something that you know will have unique value to them. Engaging in such loving acts actually makes us feel more in love.

2. Be affectionate
Most couples wonder how they went from not being able to keep their hands off each other to rarely making physical contact. Unfortunately, society tends to justify this pattern, reinforcing the idea that long-term couples are unsuitable for “puppy love” or PDA. Yet, this elimination of affection is a sad and slow progression that often starts when a couple transitions from being a “you” and a “me” to becoming a “we.” Of course, finding a connection with someone is thrilling and meaningful, but losing yourself and your separate identity in the mix is paving a dangerous road. People feel most attracted to their partner when they see them as someone separate from themselves, someone they are able to love, respect and appreciate for their unique qualities.

When couples replace substance (real acts of love) with form (the practical roles of being in a relationship), they enter into a “fantasy bond.” This bond represents an illusion of connection that actually kills off passion and attraction. We can keep the spark alive by refusing to give up our own, natural desire to express love on a physical level. Hold hands, kiss in public, sit close on the couch, touch casually in passing, and you’ll be surprised to see the depths of desire and feelings of intimacy that arise.

3. Slow down
We hear these two words all the time, but we rarely live by them. For most of us slowing down means plopping on the couch or zoning out to the TV the minute our chaotic to-do list is done. No matter how hectic our schedule, there are ways to take pause within our own minds and reconnect with ourselves throughout the day. Mindfulness provides a way of checking in with ourselves, which is one of interpersonal neurobiology expert Dr. Daniel Siegel‘s essential aspects on his “healthy mind platter.”

Mindfulness allows us to breathe and be present in the moment. In these times of reconnection, we are not only more in touch with ourselves, but we are better able to recognize and be attuned to our partner. We are more mindful of our actions toward them. We are also more aware of our feelings of desire and attraction.

When we are more present, we can make an effort to really connect, communicate and make eye contact. Again, this may feel like a no-brainer, but in truth, looking each other in the eye is one of the things we forget to do on a daily basis. Just looking at our partner and really seeing him or her as a whole person, separate from ourselves, can further rekindle our empathy, interest and attraction.

4. Try something old
As a relationship advances, it becomes all too easy to make excuses not to make time for each other. When we do get together, we may do things out of a sense of form or obligation. Relationships tend to start fizzling out when we stop sharing the lively things we used to share with our partner. Moreover, once things start to fizzle out, we become even less inclined to share these activities. The cycle that’s created forces more and more distance between partners. We can challenge this by making a commitment to take part in activities we and our partner used to share and enjoy together. If we used to go on walks, we shouldn’t let a long workday dissuade us from getting outside. Participating in activities that light us up or that light our partner up helps us stay close with our partner, while feeling the most ourselves.

5. Try something new
When people first get together, they often grow each other’s worlds, introducing each other to new people, places, interests and activities. When we fall in love, we are in a state in which we feel the most open and alive. As our relationship progresses, and the more we replace real love with a fantasy bond, the more we tend to resist anything new. Especially as we get older, we can become more self-protective or further drawn to routine. We may start to feel more entitled to our partner or more jealous or possessive and, therefore, put restrictions on each other. In effect, we start to limit or shrink each other’s worlds, rather than expanding them. We can keep love alive by continuing to be game to try new things. The more adventures we can create with each other in our day-to-day lives, the more awake we will feel to everything we experience, particularly intimacy and closeness.

In almost every relationship, there comes a time when we are challenged to the point of questioning whether to walk away. In fact when I interviewed my friend Jim Gilligan, who has been married to his wife Carol for almost 50 years, he said “you are not really married until you realize you can leave, and you don’t.” I encourage every couple I meet who has ever felt truly happy and alive with each other, who once felt like the best version of themselves, while being in the relationship, to stick in there and try to develop themselves. Otherwise, they are very likely to repeat the same patterns in yet another situation, perhaps one that isn’t even as meaningful or rewarding.

Relationships are a great place to work on ourselves. There is no harm in trying each of the above steps, as you truly have nothing to lose. The worst case scenario is that you will have grown your own capacity to be loving, vulnerable, passionate and lively. The best case scenario is that you and your partner will grow closer and rekindle your loving feelings for each other.
