Victoria Beckham Slams Divorce Rumors as She Poses with David Beckham: ‘We’re Stronger Together’

Victoria Beckham isn’t concerned about the constant divorce rumors that plague her marriage.

The fashion designer and former singer appears on the latest cover of British Vogue along with husband David Beckham and their four kids: daughter Harper Seven, 7, and sons Cruz David, 13, Romeo James, 16, and Brooklyn Joseph, 19.

“People have been making things up about our relationship for 20 years, so David and I are pretty used to ignoring the nonsense and just carrying on as normal,” she said. “But these things have a wider effect on the people around us, and that’s unfair.”

Victoria and David married in July 1999 with four-month-old Brooklyn serving as ring bearer. They last faced split rumors earlier this summer, which their spokesperson quickly denied.

“We both realize that we are stronger together than we are as individuals,” Victoria continued. “Would either of us be in the position that we are in now had we not met and been together all those years ago? It’s all about the family unit. We are much stronger the six of us, than we would be if we were individuals. We respect that family bond and that is key.”

The Beckham brood recently celebrated a big benchmark for one of their members: Romeo, who turned sweet 16 on Saturday.

“Happy Birthday Romeo! Can’t believe our baby is 16 today!” the fashion designer wrote alongside a snapshot of the mother-son pair posing together in front of a sunset.

In a second festive image, Romeo sat in front of a bunch of silver and white balloons (as well as a table piled high with presents!), while in another, she showed off the birthday boy’s tennis-themed cake.

RHOA’s Porsha Williams and Phaedra Parks Spotted Together for the First Time Since Fallout

Have Porsha Williams and Phaedra Parks finally patched things up?

Over the weekend, the former Real Housewives of Atlanta costars reunited for a friend’s birthday party, marking the first time the two have been spotted together since their friendship fell apart over a year ago.

In a video obtained by The Shade Room, Williams, 36, and Parks, 44, can both be seen in costume, happily posing for photos together.

Want to keep up on the latest from PEOPLE? Sign up for our daily newsletter to get our best stories of the day delivered straight to your inbox.

Parks came under fire last year after admitting she spread inflammatory accusations to Williams that their RHOA costar Kandi Burruss and her husband Todd Tucker had planned on drugging Williams and their mutual friend Shamea Morton in order to take advantage of them sexually.

Williams also faced backlash for repeatings Parks’ accusations throughout season 9 because she believed the claims had come directly from Burruss.

In the final episode of the reunion, Parks apologized for spreading the gossip.

“I repeated it because I heard it,” she said. “I repeated what someone told me. I shouldn’t have repeated it. I screwed up … I’m sorry.”

Parks was later let go from the show after revealing she had heard the information from an unnamed source.

Last year, Williams told Dish Nation that she didn’t know if she would ever be able to speak to Parks again.

“It’s difficult because I love Phaedra,” Williams said. “She was like my best friend — someone I talked to on the phone every single day. And for me to feel like she had betrayed me like that. … And the fact that I was sitting right there and watched her continue to lie on me about it.”

“That’s the part I can’t get past and I don’t know if I ever will,” she continued. “Right now, I just can’t talk to her.”

David Foster and Katharine McPhee Are All Smiles as They Pose Together at Oscars Party

David Foster and Katharine McPhee can’t resist the glitz and glamour of the Oscars.

Foster, 68, and McPhee, 33, spent Sunday together at the Elton John AIDS Foundation Academy Awards viewing party sponsored by Bulgari.

Although the pair didn’t walk the red carpet together, they were all smiles as they posed side-by-side inside the event.

The American Idol alum looked chic in a semi-sheer lacy black dress. The Grammy-winning producer was also dressed for the occasion, wearing a classic black suit with a partially unbuttoned white shirt underneath.

Be sure to check out PEOPLE’s full Academy Awards coverage to get the latest news on Hollywood’s big night.

Although McPhee and Foster have yet to comment publicly on their relationship, the musical pair first sparked romance rumors in September 2017, after the latter’s daughter Erin Foster shared photo of them together in Los Angeles.

While McPhee and Foster have been friends for years — first meeting on the set of American Idol when McPhee was a contestant in 2006 —  Erin captioned the photo, “Excited about my new step mom.” (A source close to the situation told PEOPLE at the time that the social media posts were a joke.)

RELATED: Oscars 2018 Nominations: Get Out and Lady Bird Score Big

Asked about the relationship rumors, McPhee previously told PEOPLE that she had “zero desire” to address them. “It’s great that they want to do that. I think it’s so amusing that people are amused by my love life,” she added.

“Here’s how I look at it: I’m not doing anything wrong, so whether people think it’s true or false, I don’t, you know, there’s nothing bad happening in my life, so people can just say whatever they want,” she said.

The 2018 Oscars were held at the Dolby Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center on March 4 and were telecast live on ABC.

See How Jax Taylor and Stassi Schroeder Are Back Together Again in Vanderpump Rules

Raise your glasses high, Vanderpump Rules fans, because PEOPLE’s got the first look at the season 6 title credits of the hit Bravo show.

The opening, set to Dena Deadly’s tune “Raise Your Glass,” kicks off with former exes Jax Taylor and Stassi Schroeder sharing a scene together again — Taylor passing a drink Schroeder’s way from behind the bar as his current girlfriend Brittany Cartwright makes eyes at the camera from the side.

Tom Sandoval and Ariana Madix are up next, the SUR bartending duo mixing and pouring drinks (in Madix’s case, a tower of champagne glasses) for waitress Scheana Marie.

Of course newlyweds Tom Schwartz and Katie Maloney are there too; he spinning his wife around as she carries a tray of drinks. Seconds later, DJ James Kennedy is center stage with Kristen Doute and Lala Kent — the latter who is returning to Lisa Vanderpump‘s sexy unique restaurant after quitting without warning last season.

Speaking of Vanderpump, she closes out the sequence (as she does every season in the iconic annual credits) ,slowly walking towards the camera and grabbing a drink before taking center stage (with dog Giggy) in the final cast group shot.

For fans wanting even more of Vanderpump Rules’ season 6 opening, PEOPLE is also premiering Bravo’s special 360-degree virtual reality tour of the filming.

The experience will make viewers feel like they’re on the set of the shoot and let them see how that final photo came together (it appears one star got a round of applause upon entering the set).

Season 6 of Vanderpump Rules is pumped full of drama, including new alliances (former enemies Taylor and Kennedy are now friends?), new romances (recently divorced Marie is seeing someone special), and rocky waters for some couples (“I think we should just break the f— up” Madix tells Sandoval at one point in the season 6 trailer).

There’s also a shocking allegation about Taylor that tears the SUR gang down the middle, leaving them scrambling to decide where their loyalties must lie.

The claim shakes up Taylor’s relationship with Cartwright, too, as she debates whether or not to stand by her man.

“Go try to ruin another girl’s life,” Cartwright shouts at Taylor during one heated argument previewed.

He isn’t happy to hear that. “No one’s going to tell me how to act in my own home where I pay my own bills,” he bites back — Cartwright quickly telling him “I am” before hitting him.

Vanderpump Rules season 6 premieres Dec. 4 at 9 p.m. ET on Bravo. The network will also air a Vanderpump Rules: How They Got Here special Nov. 27 (10 p.m. ET) catching fans up on the most memorable moments from the past five seasons.

Meet Zac Brown’s ‘Better Half’: How He and Jewelry Designer Wife Shelly Created an Inclusive Camp for Kids — Together

Zac Brown and his jewelry designer wife, Shelly, are proving they’re the definition of power couple.

In Opry Entertainment’s new YouTube series, “Better Half,” premiering exclusively on PEOPLE, the spotlight instead shines on the spouses of country superstars who are managing busy careers of their own.

“I’m so excited to be able to share my company and my passion for design with so many people,” Shelly, who is featured in the first episode of the series for her business Shelly Brown Jewelry, tells PEOPLE. “Designing is something that I’ve been doing my whole life and getting to create wearable pieces for every woman is something I’m incredibly proud of.”

From creating her own childhood jewelry to attending school for design, Shelly, 33, was able to launch her jewelry line — which includes a range of everything from statement necklaces to stackable crystal bracelets — in 2015.

“Design has always been something that has really come naturally to me,” she says in the clip. “It has been really fun to be able to bring that to the table now just the way that I did back then.”

An exciting part of the business to her is seeing celebrities like Little Big Town’s Kimberly Schlapman and Kacey Musgraves sport her pieces.

“It’s fun to see people who have this amazing style really include our pieces in what they wear,” she says.

Whether it’s creating new jewelry pieces for her line or helping out on music videos for Zac Brown Band, Shelly keeps a “do it yourself” attitude.

“I have no idea how other people do it, but it seems like we have two days before this video is going to shoot so we have to get all this stuff together. It’s high-intensity and adrenaline,” she says, adding that some of the wardrobe items from shoots are on display in the Country Music Hall of Fame. “To see such a huge part of your life laid out in a way like that brought tears to my eyes, because there are so many memories. Just to really be able to look at how much has happened and how much has been accomplished is amazing.”

Along with running her business and raising her and Zac’s five children, Shelly also provides an incredible opportunity to other kids through the inclusive camp she created with her husband called Camp Southern Ground.

“Camp Southern Ground was Zac’s dream from the time he was 14,” she says. “Over 10 years ago, on our first date, he told me he was going to start a camp for kids.”

She continues: “Every time we would live somewhere, we would end up buying an extra piece of land like, ‘That’s going to be where the camp is going to go.’ So when we got our house that we’re in now, it was just so meant to be.”

Though Camp Southern Ground focuses on military families and children with neurological disorders, Shelly explains that they want to be able to serve everyone — and even gets emotional sharing the impact that the camp has had on these kids’ lives.

“Last summer, we had a lot of children who came to us who were on the autism spectrum,” she says. “We had one little boy in particular whose mom wrote us an email afterwards how he had never been invited to a birthday party or anything like that. he had all of these friends and went home and talked about that.”

Through the camp, Shelly is teaching her kids — son Alexander, 3, and daughters Joni, 6, Georgia, 7, Lucy, 9, and Justice, 10 — that helping others is the “most important thing” and that the “world does not revolve around” them.

As for what she’s teaching her husband, it’s “to slow down a little bit and look around.”

“But there’s nothing that he loves more than those kids and a daddy,” she says. “That’s what matters.”

Strangers Come Together to Help Man With Down Syndrome Rebuild His Movie Collection After Fire

When a raging wildfire destroyed Mark Orsillo’s home and prized movie collection, strangers from around the country rallied together on Facebook to make sure that the 34-year-old man with Down Syndrome wouldn’t have to wait to begin rebuilding.

Orsillo and his parents only had about 20 minutes to evacuate their Oroville, California home as the fire approached on Saturday night. Danielle Devine, Orsillo’s sister, rushed to help her brother gather his belongings. Devine was able to fill two bags, but she knew she needed to rescue a portion of Orsillo’s collection of 300 movies. With time running out and no room to spare, she was only able to save about 20 DVDs. Her parents, Pastors Steve and Vicki Orsillo, saved what they were able to throw into their car.

When the family returned, they saw that the house they had lived in for 27 years—a house that Steve Orsillo built—was completely incinerated, and nothing was salvageable. “Mark’s apartment is attached to my parents’ house and both were just completely gone, just totally gone. That was our childhood home,” Devine tells PEOPLE. Her brother, meanwhile, was still reeling from the loss of his collection.

“DVDs for Mark are everything,” Devine says. “He watches them, talks about them, collects them and organizes them, they’re his hobby.”

On Monday, in an effort to help ease some of Orsillo’s pain, Devine posted to Facebook asking people to donate any unwanted DVDs to her brother. “He is an OCD movie collector and lost hundreds of movies,” she wrote in a Facebook post. “This is very hard for him.”

It didn’t take long for the movies to come rollin’ in.

Within hours, strangers from around the country left comments announcing the DVDs they were sending Orsillo’s way. They included movies and TV shows like Spider-Man, Kindergarten Cop, Harry Potter, and Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers. “The response has been incredibly surprising,” Devine says.

As of Friday, Devine says her brother’s new collection has now reached close to 400 DVDs, and she thinks it may top a thousand in the coming weeks.

The family is doing well after the fire, Devine says, and Steve Orsillo plans to rebuild the house on the property. A donation page has been set up the assist the family and has already surpassed $ 12,000. And while it is wonderful her brother is getting attention, Devine wants to remind others that there were many families who lost their homes during the fire, and they need help, too. Today, the fire is 95-percent contained.

On Friday, Devine posted a heartwarming video of Orsillo seeing his new collection for the first time:

Devine, who played basketball at Arizona State, says her brother was always her biggest fan when she was on the court. “It’s really cool that I can return the favor now, because I am his biggest fan.”

“Mark is just the most loving person you’ll ever meet,” Devine continues. “He doesn’t have any bad days, he forgives everyone very easily and never gets offended. It’s almost like the love is being returned to him a million times over, and he deserves it more than anybody.”

“Yes I do!” Mark excitedly yells in the background.

Devine laughs. “Yes, you do,” she says.

Artist Paints Interracial Couples Just Being, Together

In the early 1990s, painter Kerry James Marshall created a series of paintings depicting black love ― a subject that, despite being glaringly simple, was largely absent from the annals of art history.

In one 1992 painting, “Slow Dance,” a black couple slow dances together in their living room as music notes swirl around them. Marshall immortalizes this romantic moment, exceptional in its ordinariness, magical because it’s mundane. With his paintbrush, Marshall sought to normalize the banal elements of black life that are nearly always overlooked by art, film, and cultural representation. The basic gesture of depicting black couples hanging out was something revolutionary.

Artist Leslie Barlow had Marshall on the mind when she embarked on her most recent series “Loving” in 2015. The mixed media paintings depict interracial couples based around the Minnesota area, where Barlow lives and works. The series takes its name from the landmark Supreme Court case Loving v. Virginia, which celebrated its 50th anniversary this year.

Fifty years feels wildly short when considering this is how long interracial marriage has been legal in the United States. And still, prejudice regarding interracial couples endured long past the Loving ruling. “I think a lot of people forget that there is this history of discrimination, and it didn’t just disappear when the Supreme Court banned anti-discrimination laws,” Barlow told The Huffington Post. “I wish that was the case, but racism is totally alive and well in this country.”

This inequity is painfully clear, for example, in the history of art, where oil paint has been used to tell certain kids of stories about certain kinds of people for centuries, leaving whole populations unrepresented and seemingly overlooked. “My work is about having agency over the representation of my story and stories like mine,” Barlow said. “It’s a sharing of experiences we don’t often see.”

Barlow, who is mixed race, began making work that grappled with themes of race and identity while in graduate school. Her earlier work mainly depicted members of her immediate family, but with “Loving,” Barlow hoped to create equally personal works for a larger community.

In particular, she was interested in the local Minneapolis–Saint Paul population, which still lags behind most other U.S. states in terms of race and representation. “The lack of diversity in Minnesota did have an impact on my racial development and ideas of what was ‘normal,’” Barlow said. She resolved to illustrate interracial couples, still largely erased from the cultural archives, hoping the intimate depictions could steer viewers away from binary methods of thinking about race that operate primarily in terms of black and white.

For the series, Barlow selected couples and families in the local vicinity, most of whom she knew through personal connections. “I wanted the paintings to meet these families where they are,” she said. She began by photographing her subjects in a space they felt comfortable ― whether at home or roaming the neighborhood. She then rendered the photographic images onto un-stretched canvasses or wooden panels, starting with acrylic underpainting and adding layers of oil paint and pastel.

Barlow also experimented with sewing and collaging fabric onto the works, subtly alluding to the traditions of quilting and tapestry. “The quilt is a coming together of these disparate materials to make something beautiful, whole, uniquely its own thing,” she said. “It ends up being a metaphor for these people coming together to become one family. Quilts also bring up these ideas of domesticity and family, the warmth of that.”

Although the Loving case is the impetus for the series, the paintings themselves depict couples and families ― hanging out, cuddling, drinking a glass of wine ― just being, together. “I want each painting to be unique, but to also have this thing in common of feeling normal,” she said. The artist communicated with all of her subjects beforehand to agree on an environment and activity that represented their daily lives. “The paintings felt mundane in the best of ways. That’s what I want, to normalize these images.”

Although race and identity have long been ideas central to Barlow’s artistic project, they are especially necessary right now, when racist and anti-immigrant rhetoric are becoming commonplace under President Trump’s administration. “I don’t shy away from my art being political,” Barlow said. “I do believe in the power of images and social change. I think, as an artist, it’s my duty to reflect the world and what’s going on within it. I feel it’s important I continue to push that.”

Leslie Barlow’s “Loving” is on view until March 25, 2017 at Public Functionary in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

7 Resolutions Every Married Couple Should Make Together

For BRIDES, by Elizabeth Mitchell.

New year, new marriage. Well, sort of. Whether you just got hitched in 2016 or are coming up on your 10-year anniversary, it’s never too early (or too late) to start working on your relationship and building toward a healthier, happier future together. But exactly what goals should you set, and more importantly, how in the world will you actually get yourselves to stick to them? That, couples, is the question.

According to research from the Journal of Clinical Psychology, approximately 8 percent (yep you read that right) of Americans actually make good on their New Year’s resolutions, which, admittedly, doesn’t look so promising. The biggest problem, however, is the goals themselves. Instead of thinking big (i.e. we’ll do spinning together five times a week), in reality it’s best to start small (i.e. we’ll do one spinning class a week) and work your way up from there.

You’ll also want to get much more specific with your resolutions, as opposed to keeping them very vague and general. For example, don’t just vow to be more affectionate in 2017; find measurable ways you can achieve this goal, like touching each other every time you watch TV, and make that your New Year’s mission. See, easy right? And definitely not nearly as overwhelming as just trying to get in more physical touch.

From learning his “love language” to playing the appreciation game, we’ve put together 18 New Year’s marriage resolutions to get the love flowing and the bonds growing in 2017. Remember: you can tailor any and all of these to make them reachable and achievable for your own relationship.

1. Plan a weekly (or bi-weekly) date night.

Even if it’s at home once in awhile, commit to a weekly (or bi-weekly) date night to reconnect and keep the romance alive in your relationship, suggests psychologist and relationship expert Paulette Kouffman Sherman, author of Dating from the Inside Out.

2. Practice more positive talk.

Vow to say five positive things for every negative remark toward your spouse, recommends Sherman. Not only will this help nip the negativity in the bud, but it will also build both of you up and encourage you to focus on the good in each other — as opposed to dwelling on the not so good.

3. Play the appreciation game.

Every evening at dinner, practice telling your partner one thing you appreciate about him and have him do the same for you. It can be something specific like how he helped you solve a dilemma that day or more general like the fact that he works his booty off to support you and the fam! Switch it up nightly, and let the love flow.

4. Actively seduce each other.

And vow to make it a priority at least once a month (if not more), advises NY Times Bestselling author of 101 Nights of Great Sex, Laura Corn.

“Dream up something unique to do together in the bedroom, make a plan at least a week out and let your partner know something special is coming.” Drop hints along the way (sexting works well!) until the big, unforgettable night. “The elements of surprise and anticipation that this helps create are critical to a lasting, powerful sexual relationship.”

5. Fight fair.

According to marriage and family therapist Alicia Taverner, LMFT, owner of Rancho Counseling, the best New Year’s resolution for couples is to fight fair.

“This means refraining from things like name calling, criticism, attacking personality or character traits and bringing up past issues into a current fight. You want to fight about the topic at hand and discuss it until you feel there is resolution or an agreement to disagree.”

Here’s how she recommends structuring the gripe: “I’m upset/angry/sad about ____. In the future I’d like it if you could ____.”

6. Touch each other every time you watch TV.

One thing Crystal Rice, owner of Insieme Consulting, finds that couples in trouble have stopped being affectionate in non-sexual ways. So vow to do better!

“By simply sitting next to your partner on the couch, you increase the probability of affection, a commodity often seen far too little in long-term relationships,” she says.

7. Stop lying about the little things.

Like looking good in a sweater that’s gotten too small! Yep, you heard us right.

When we lie about the little things, it gets easier and easier to lie about the bigger stuff, explains Rice. “And then one day you wake up and realize you’ve been lying about feelings or thoughts or concerns that should have been brought to light many months or years earlier. You don’t have to be a rat about it. You can say, ‘I like you better in the blue sweater.’”

Whatever you do, just don’t lie.

Carrie Fisher and mother ‘to be together’

Carrie Fisher and her mother Debbie Reynolds will be laid to rest together at a private funeral service on Thursday.

ENTERTAINMENT SPECIALS:

Debbie Reynolds And Carrie Fisher Will Be Buried Together In Joint Funeral Service

Mother-daughter duo Debbie Reynolds and Carrie Fisher will be buried in a joint funeral service together at the Forest Lawn cemetery in Hollywood Hills, the Associated Press reports.

No date has been set for the private service, but a large public memorial is also being considered. The pair will rest nearby a number of other actors and celebrities, including Lucille Ball, Bette Davis and Liberace.

After experiencing a heart attack onboard a plane, Fisher died Tuesday at age 60. Just one day later, after helping arrange plans for her daughter’s funeral with son Todd Fisher, Reynolds was rushed to the hospital and died of a stroke at age 84

“She wanted to be with Carrie,” Todd told Variety.

A star of old Hollywood, Reynolds’ most notable film appearance is in 1952’s “Singin’ in the Rain,” although she remained in the tabloids for years thanks to continued screen appearances and famous friendships. Her marriage to singer Eddie Fisher produced two children, who both followed in their parents’ showbiz footsteps.

But the mother and daughter seemed to have a particular connection.

A photo by Lawrence Schiller showing a 6-year-old Fisher watching her mother perform seemed to perfectly depict the pair, and was shared widely following news of their deaths.

Their relationship was not always so easy, though ― mother and daughter were often estranged for long periods of time.

Having been raised with all the glitz, glamour, cameras and spotlights of her famous parents, Fisher began experimenting with party drugs in her teenage years, and pursuing an acting career for herself meant she would only be leaning further into the Hollywood scene. Later, a bipolar diagnosis would provide another hurdle to her well-being.

Fisher’s big break came with the first “Star Wars” installment in 1977, released when she was 20. At age 28, she went to rehab for drug abuse; around that time she was also diagnosed with her mental health condition. Fisher translated her memories of this tumultuous time into the loosely biographical Postcards from the Edge, which she later adapted into a movie starring Meryl Streep.

Fisher was a staunch and candid advocate for mental healthcare, along with her mother. But Reynolds has admitted that her daughter’s disorder, and struggle with drugs, took a hefty toll. At one point, they didn’t speak for about a decade.

After decades of turmoil, however, the two seemed to become closer than ever in their final years.

“I would say that Carrie and I have finally found happiness. I admire her strength in survival,” Reynolds told Oprah Winfrey in a 2011 interview largely about her relationship with her daughter.

“I’ve had to walk through a lot of my tears, but she was worth it,” Reynolds said.

“There’s very few women from her generation who worked like that, who just kept a career going all her life, and raised children, and had horrible relationships, and lost all her money, and got it back again,” Fisher told NPR’s Terry Gross in November. (Reynolds’ three marriages ended contentiously; she declared bankruptcy in 1997 after a casino investment failed.)

“I mean, she’s had an amazing life, and she’s someone to admire.”

Couple Married 63 Years Dies Hours Apart: ‘I Know They Are Together’

After 63 years of marriage, Dolores and Trent Winstead of Nashville, Tennessee just couldn’t bear to be apart.

On Dec. 9 at around 9 p.m., Dolores, 83, died after suffering a brain aneurysm; the following afternoon at 4 p.m., Trent, 88, died after his heart had weakened from kidney failure.

“I know they are together and happy for eternity, and that is a comfort to me,” the couple’s daughter Sheryl Winstead told Today. “But I never in a million years dreamed I would walk out of the hospital without either one of them.”

The pair would have celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary in January.

When Trent was hospitalized at St. Thomas West earlier this month for kidney failure, Dolores was seemingly in good health. One day at the hospital, she appeared to have fallen asleep in a chair at Trent’s bedside after complaining of a bad headache. It wasn’t until Sheryl tried to wake her up and couldn’t that the family realized something was wrong. Nurses tried to revive Dolores but her brain activity was gone after the aneurysm, according to the Washington Post. They hooked her up to a ventilator and eventually moved her and Trent into the same room.

For their final hours together, the couple held hands as they laid in beds side by side.

The couple has two kids, three grandkids and eight great-grandkids. Their son Eddie was the one who told Trent that Dolores had died.

“I had to lean down next to him, and just kind of tell him, ‘Mom has passed,’” Eddie told ABC affiliate WKRN. “When that happened, it was kind of like his whole spirit just changed.”

He continued, “I told him, I said, ‘Dad, if you want to go be with Mom, that’s quite alright with Sheryl and I.’”

Losing both Trent and Dolores in such a short span of time was undoubtedly difficult for the family, but knowing the couple didn’t have to live long without one another brought them some comfort.

“It’s like God made their travel arrangements and they went together,” Sheryl told WKRN. “It’s just really sweet.”

Watch the video above for more on their story.

Donald And Melania Trump: The Nation’s First Live Apart Together Couple

The news that Melania Trump will live apart from her husband, President-elect Donald Trump for a few months until their son Barron, 10, finished school, was shocking to many people.

While it may seem odd that a married couple doesn’t live together, the Trumps’ decision to live apart is actually part of a growing trend  –  living apart together couples, also known as LATs, or apartners.

About one-third of U.S. adults who aren’t married or cohabiting are in LAT relationships. While some are young people in long-distance relation ships because of schooling or careers, or couples who want to live together but can’t for various reasons (such as military families), many include women like me  –  divorced, middle-aged empty-nesters who want nothing that resembles the married life we knew. In fact, more older divorced and widowed women are choosing live apart together relationships so they can enjoy their romantic relationships without the complications, caretaking and complacency of living together.

But a good portion are married, like the Trumps – who will be the highest-profile example of this demographic trend. Still, the number of couples who are “married, spouse absent,” according to the United States census, is a lot less than the numbers of couples living together – just a little more than 3 percent of the population.

How will they make it work? Does it help or hinder a relationship? What are the benefits? What about the kids?

Upsides of living apart

In researching LATs/apartners for The New I Do: Reshaping Marriage for Skeptics, Realists and Rebels  –  which offers a living apart together model as one of many marital options couples can chose from to individualize their marriage  –  I discovered that LATs/apartners feel more committed and less trapped than live-in couples. When you live apart, each person has to actively work on commitment and trust; it’s not taken for granted. Nor is sex – especially since so many couples are dealing with what they consider sexless marriages.

I also learned that many people who are in LAT relationships, or were in them for a while, say that they learned valuable relationship skills, such as trust, patience and better communication. Many also got better at time management, independence, and discovering intimacy that wasn’t just about sex and touch.

Those are the kind of skills can lead to a more satisfying relationship, and relationship satisfaction can make couples feel more committed to each other. Couples who feel committed to each other are motivated to show it; they act in ways that their partner can clearly experience as loving. And they don’t need to be under the same roof to act loving.

Isn’t that exactly what people want in a romantic relationship?

Living apart — good for women?

“It’s of particular interest to women, who often get the short end of the stick in marriage and cohabitation. They still end up doing most of the caretaking and household chores, even if they work full time,” says Montreal filmmaker Sharon Hyman, who is working on a documentary called Apartners: Living Happily Ever Apart that I will be a part of as well as apartners from around the world.

“Couples, especially women, who are apartners relish the fact that to have time and space apart, and believe it may just be the secret ingredient to keeping love alive and passions growing. When you remove the petty, annoying parts out of a relationship, like laundry on the floor or who’s spending too much on what, then you are left with the good stuff – the chance to truly be intimate and present with your partner. Many believe that it actually makes them a better spouse.”

Hyman has been an apartner for almost two decades and wouldn’t have it any other way, although she acknowledges it may not be right for everyone.

“I am not an advocate for couples living apart. What I am an advocate for is having options. I just do not believe that there is only one way to love, no one-sized-fits-all, cookie-cutter way to have a relationship,” Hyman writes in Psychology Today. “It is all about what works best for you and your mate.”

What about the kids?
Of course, living apart together isn’t that hard if you don’t have kids or your kids are grown and out of the house; it’s an entirely different thing if you’re trying to raise a child or children together. Barron’s schooling is supposedly why the Trumps made the decision to live apart for a while. Children add complications to the arrangement, but they aren’t insurmountable.

The Trumps will have to come up with a plan that addresses how Donald will maintain meaningful connection with Barron and have everyone feel like they’re part of one family. Technology makes that awfully easy nowadays.

Then they’ll just need to keep communicating. Trump will want to be sure to let Barron know when he’ll be home again, and assure him that they will have plenty of one-on-one time together, as well as family time, before he heads back to Washington.

In most cases, the person living apart from the family home would want to be sensitive to the spouse at home with the kids; you want to avoid the “super-parent” syndrome – making one person responsible for all the caretaking – as much as you can. Since that’s the arrangement the Trumps already have – and let’s face it, they have lots of paid help, too – this won’t be an issue for them.

A POTUS who looks like us

Say what you will about the Trumps, but here’s an upside to their planned arrangement: couples about to wed or even long-term couples who feel stuck in their marriage may look at the marital arrangement of the future POTUS and FLOTUS and decide that they, too, would like to become apartners. Since fewer of us in America are in traditional nuclear families, why wouldn’t we want a president who reflects who we actually are — beyond just a man of color like President Obama or a woman like presidential-hopeful Hillary Clinton.

Every couple is free to individualize their marriage so that it works for them, no one else. And that’s exactly what the Trumps, married almost 12 years, plan to do.

Unfortunately the Trumps’ arrangement will cost U.S. taxpayers money – an unknown amount right now, unless they plan to fund their lifestyle on their own, which is highly doubtful. There may be many things to not like about Trump whether you voted for him or not, but choosing an alternative marital model shouldn’t be one of them.

Damir Doma to Show Men’s and Women’s Together in June

Just as a number of brands ranging from Ermenegildo Zegna, Bottega Veneta and Calvin Klein Collection to Costume National, Corneliani and No. 21 will, for different reasons, forgo the catwalk during Milan Fashion Week in June, Damir Doma has decided to show both his men’s and women’s collections on the runway.
“It took almost a year to make this decision but we think this will enable us to improve our deliveries and performances,” said Doma, who unified his women’s pre-fall and main collections into a single lineup in June. The Croatian designer said he will show the same number of men’s and women’s outfits. “The sales campaign will close in July and we will have the right amount of time to produce the collections and have them delivered in stores earlier than in the past.”
Doma also said that by showing together the two collections buyers might make more coherent purchases. “Men’s buyers used to focus on sportswear, while women’s buyers tend to look for special pieces,” he explained. “The image of the brand was not cohesive in the stores and it also turned out that women’s wear had a higher retail price point. I hope that, from now on, things will be more balanced.”
Doma, who sells his collections in 120 stores, added that

Reunited Punks L7’s Message To Millennials: ‘Get It Together, Step Up’

Everywhere a music fan turns these days, it feels like a band at their height in the ‘90s is reuniting — and the quality of the ensuing musical output has varied widely from inspired to “why?!”

But there have been few reunions met with as much exuberance of critics and fans alike than that of L7, the explosive all-female Los Angeles grunge-punk outfit fronted by the effervescent Donita Sparks and known for their trashing, high-energy songs like “Shitlist” and “Shove.”

it all started a couple of years back when Sparks began curating the band’s Facebook page, posting photos, fliers and other band ephemera she was in the process of digitizing. In that process, Sparks also came across many hours of videos the band had shot during their original run. She showed them to filmmaker Sarah Price and the group decided to pursue the creation of a documentary using the newly discovered footage, launching a successful $ 130,000 Kickstarter campaign to fund it.

The fan response to the Kickstarter and Facebook posts was so deafening the band, whose original lineup had last performed together in 1996, decided to give live shows another go, playing their first show in almost two decades together in LA in May. They followed that show up with a run of 11 shows in Europe and are in the midst of a mini-tour of 15 U.S. cities, playing Riot Fest in Chicago earlier this month.

The response to L7’s resurrection, especially from fans so young they weren’t alive when the band’s most recent album was released in 1999, came as a surprise to Sparks, she admitted shortly before taking the stage in Chicago’s Douglas Park. Her band is a good place, she said.

“A lot of people are like, ‘L7? Who are they? Who cares?’ And other people are like, ‘Oh, my God, it’s fucking L7!’” Sparks said. “We’re kind of in this cool, weird spot that we dig. We don’t have to be known by the masses, we just want to be known by the cool people anyway. We don’t have to convince the squares that we are a decent band.”

Decent doesn’t even come close to doing the band justice. Sparks and her bandmates — Suzi Gardner, Jennifer Finch and Demetra “Dee” Plakas — ripped through 13 songs from their catalog over the course of a taut hourlong set that felt like one of the packed weekend’s loudest and most-anticipated. One would have never guessed they were watching a band that “peaked” some 20 years earlier.

Closing with the thrilling “Fast and Frightening,” the band delivered on a request they made of the stage’s sound tent earlier in the set: to “melt off their balls and titties, in a nice way.”

As much as the shows have represented a family reunion of sorts for L7, the Riot Fest set was also a literal homecoming for half the band’s lineup, as both Plakas and Sparks were born in Chicago.

Growing up in the Chicago area, Sparks said she turned to bands like the Ramones, Blondie and the B-52s, all of whom represented a level of eccentricity and unapologetic weirdness that provided solace from her “square” suburban surroundings.

After high school, she spent a year working in downtown Chicago as a foot messenger for a photo lab to save up money to move to Los Angeles, where she launched L7 with Gardner in 1985. The hotel the band was staying at while in Chicago actually overlooked the office building where Sparks delivered artwork on foot to advertising agencies.

In Los Angeles, the band worked to develop their signature sound, a fiery blend of punk, metal and grunge elements, and were signed by Sub Pop, the label known for breaking artists like Nirvana and helping create Seattle-style grunge.

L7 didn’t quite breakthrough to the mainstream until their third album, 1992’s “Bricks Are Heavy.” They were even featured in a John Waters film, playing the part of a band called “Camel Lips” alongside Kathleen Turner in 1994’s “Serial Mom.”

They went on to influence a whole generation of women-fronted bands associated with the riot grrrl movement not only because of their music but also because of their politics. The band founded Rock for Choice, a decade-long series of feminist, pro-choice women’s rights benefit shows.

Sparks has stated in other interviews that she can see the need to revive the Rock for Choice series. Still, she admitted that she is disappointed in what she perceives as a lack of younger artists today who are embracing political activism at a time when many of the same pressing questions that prompted benefits like Rock for Choice remain unanswered today.

She is particularly concerned about environmental issues and though she said she was thrilled by the Supreme Court’s decision this year on marriage equality, she quipped, “If we’re all underwater, who cares if you’re gay [and] getting married.”

“I scratch my head and wonder why aren’t these younger bands doing benefits, I mean, are they? Are any of them organizing?” Sparks said. “We fucking built [Rock for Choice] from scratch. The Beastie Boys built the Free Tibet series from scratch. Are any young bands stepping up because I don’t know, they should be. I don’t get it. It’s needed now more than ever. Basically we’re the fucking Titanic sinking on every issue that we can think of. Millennials, get it together. Step up!”

While Sparks is happy to see more popular artists embracing the term “feminist” she added that she would like to see more action in that arena as well.

“They probably are feminists but I don’t know how much that is speaking to teenage women, I really don’t. I mean, rock and roll women,” Sparks said. “If I were a teenager I’d be looking for ways to get my aggression and frustration out. I’d really just want to scream and yell at a concert because there’s a lot of stuff to be pissed off about.”

As for L7’s future past a string of shows on the west coast in November, Sparks said there are currently “no plans” for the band to create new music and that they have been exclusively focused on the live shows and the forthcoming documentary. Beyond that, she added, “you never know.”

“We’re not being salespeople to get people to like our new album,” Sparks said. “We don’t care. We’re playing shit that’s 20 years old that people really like and they want to hear. It’s been a love fest.”

Working Together for Children: A Critical Introduction to Multi-Agency Working

Working Together for Children: A Critical Introduction to Multi-Agency Working

Working Together for Children provides a factual and analytical introduction to the systems and processes of multi-agency work with children and families. It is for trainee practitioners in childcare, education, social work and health care, and for those going on to work, or already working, in such settings who are looking to be more effective practitioners. Reflection on practice is a theme running throughout the book. To assist readers with this, there are two types of feature: information boxes, giving further factual details of particular areas related to multi-agency work; and reflective exercises containing case studies, vignettes or statements, followed by questions designed to stimulate reflection on issues raised in the text. Readers should find Working Together for Children incredibly useful for having both an introduction to policy/frameworks and a full and critical evaluation of these in one place.

Here Are Gifs Of All The Times Alicia And Kalinda Drank Together On ‘The Good Wife’

Warning: This post contains spoilers from the first six seasons of “The Good Wife,” up to and including the season 6 finale.

When the sixth season of “The Good Wife” came to a close on May 10, it marked the end of one of TV’s most powerful, complicated relationships: Kalicia. Up until this point of the marvelous show, attorney Alicia Florrick (Julianna Margulies) and investigator Kalinda Sharma (Archie Panjabi) were alternately the best of friends and the bitterest of enemies. There were runs of episodes where they almost always shown together, and much longer runs where they were never in the same room. Gossip around Hollywood chalks the latter up to a vicious but completely mysterious fight between Margulies and Panjabi, which only makes the on-screen relationship between the two characters more fascinating.

Amidst all the turmoil, there was one thing you could count on with these two: They would drink. They loved drinking, a trait they share with several other powerful female protagonists on TV dramas.

So to commemorate their glorious friendship, The Huffington Post combed through six seasons of “The Good Wife” to find all the scenes where Kalicia drank together. Here they are.

2015-05-18-1431987861-8079182-Season1Episode1AliciaDrinking.gif

The ritual began in the show’s pilot, meaning it predates even the appearance of such staple characters of the show as Eli Gold (Alan Cumming) and David Lee (Zach Grenier). That’s how integral it is to the show! In this first episode, Alicia and Kalinda work together to crack a difficult murder case involving a faked carjacking. After Alicia presents their killer evidence, and the jury goes out to deliberate, Kalinda tells her that it’s a Stern Lockhart & Gardner tradition for lawyers to take tequila shots after their first jury trial.

2015-05-18-1431987898-1029929-Season1Episode1KalindaDrinking.gif

After Alicia takes her shot, Kalinda reveals that this was a trick: no such tradition exists. For a moment, it seems like Kalinda won’t drink her tequila. But then, of course, she does. Alicia smiles.

2015-05-18-1431987934-7707923-Season1Episode11KalindaDrinking.gif

The next nine episodes feature lots of interactions between Alicia and Kalinda, but none of them involve alcohol, sadly. They don’t drink together again until the 11th episode. Even then, it’s not in a bar, but in a room in their office: they drink beer and eat kettle corn while watching TV news related to the two cases of the week.

2015-05-18-1431988039-8472490-Season1Episode14KalindaDrinking.gif

In episode 14, though, Alicia and Kalinda hit the bar again, because they have some personal matters to discuss. (Glenn Childs has asked Kalinda to testify against Alicia’s husband Peter.) This time, Kalinda orders a dark beer…

2015-05-18-1431988092-6262329-Season1Episode14AliciaDrinking.gif

…while Alicia drinks what looks like tequila again. But she sips it instead of shooting it.

2015-05-18-1431988156-9689967-Season1Episode21AliciaDrinking.gif

This drinking session apparently goes well, because they go to another bar in episode 21. Alicia drinks what appears to be a martini with olives.

2015-05-18-1431988182-9482663-Season1Episode21KalindaDrinking.gif

Kalinda gets another dark beer.

2015-05-18-1431988228-9069830-Season1Episode22BothDrinking.gif

The very next episode, the second-to-last of season 1, opens with Alicia and Cary finding out that Alicia got the one full-time position they had been competing for all season. Kalinda waits for Alicia down the hall and, knowing that Alicia will likely feel crummy for beating out Cary, insists that they go to get drinks. They start by ordering two tequila shots in a row.

2015-05-18-1431988316-6076505-Season1Episode22AliciaDrinking.gif

They keep drinking, as is evident from the plethora of glasses that accumulate on the bar top.

2015-05-18-1431988346-6286008-Season1Episode22KalindaDrinking.gif

All that tequila gets them pretty wasted. A cute, younger guy hits on them, sending them into a giggle fit. He buys them yet another round of drinks.

2015-05-18-1431988373-3979951-Season1Episode22AliciaDrinkingAgain.gif

These extra drinks send them into the truthbomb-dropping stage of drunkenness, prompting Alicia to ask Kalinda whether she’s a lesbian.

Kalinda refuses to answer, much to Alicia’s chagrin. But then a call to Alicia’s cell phone saves her. Will tells Alicia she has to go see a client, so she composes herself and goes to Colin Sweeney’s house, where she finds him handcuffed to a dead female body. Alicia maintains admirable composure, considering her inebriation. Close call!

2015-05-18-1431988410-1505446-Season2Episode6KalindaDrinking.gif

Alicia and Kalinda next drink together in the sixth episode of season two, at an office party to celebrate a huge class action settlement. While drinking champagne, Alicia notes that Kalinda doesn’t look as happy as everyone else at the firm.

2015-05-18-1431988573-2916275-Season2Episode9AliciaDrinking.gif

Just three episodes later, in “Nine Hours,” one of the best episodes of the entire series, Alicia and Kalinda work on a stressful death row case from Alicia’s apartment. At a particularly trying moment, Alicia grabs them two beers out of the fridge.

2015-05-18-1431988636-9835993-Season2Episode9BothDrinking.gif

They drink them on Alicia’s bed. Slash fic alert!

2015-05-18-1431989198-858921-Season2Episode17BothDrinking.gif

They actually only visit a bar one time in the second season, in the 17th episode. They return to their beloved tequila shots.

A couple episodes later, Alicia discovers that Kalinda had slept with Peter, one time, many years ago, before they were friends. She’s completely furious. The revelation creates a rift between her and Peter — and, more importantly, between her and Kalinda. Throughout most of season 3, they only speak when work requires them to. Some have speculated that the real-life tiff between Julianna Margulies and Archie Panjabi first emerged around this time, though Margulies attributed the break to natural developments in the plot.

2015-05-18-1431989242-7090087-Season3Episode22KalindaDrinking.gif

In any case, they finally drink together again in the final episode of season 3. Though it begins as a kind of “Parent Trap” situation — Cary invited them both to the same bar — they actually manage to have a bit of fun.

2015-05-18-1431989277-8133208-Season3Episode22AliciaDrinking.gif

They even take tequila shots together!

2015-05-18-1431989347-2365038-Season4Episode6KalindaDrinking.gif

This bar visit sets off something of a renaissance in their friendship. They visit bars three times in the first half of season 4. They sip red wine and whiskey in episode 6.

2015-05-18-1431989381-2828868-Season4Episode9AliciaDrinking.gif

Cary joins them for some cocktails of an indeterminate nature in episode 9.

2015-05-18-1431989741-77136-Season4Episode10AliciaDrinking.gif

And then in episode 10, they go back to tequila shots. Kalinda is uncharacteristically late to the drinks in this episode, which worries Alicia.

2015-05-18-1431989768-8150781-Season4Episode10KalindaDrinking.gif

When she shows up, a few minutes after Alicia takes her first shot, she reveals that the drama surrounding her relationship with her erratic husband is over. What exactly happened to him is unclear, though when Kalinda says there’s no chance of his ever returning, it’s hard not to suspect that she killed him. He was a jerk, though, so this is an occasion for tequila.

2015-05-18-1431989799-8829444-Season4Episode11KalindaBringsWine.gif

One of the sweetest of their drinks sessions comes in the next episode, when Alicia is staying at a remote hotel while waiting to be allowed to depose a key witness in a case. Kalinda brings her fresh clothes — and a bottle of red wine.

2015-05-18-1431989853-9096019-Season4Episode11NeitherDrinking.gif

They lie in side-by-side beds glumly, chatting about this and that while drinking glasses of red wine. It’s cute. It seems like maybe they’re on track to be best friends again.

But then — nothing. In a big way.

Alicia and Kalinda see each other briefly in the next episode, but after that, don’t share a scene for more than two seasons after this hotel tryst. There’s no on-screen blowout to explain their bizarre separation, so this is when many (starting with Buzzfeed) speculated that Panjabi and Margulies got in some terrible fight. No one in the press has ever managed to figure out what transpired; it’s one of the best-kept secrets in Hollywood.

Whatever happened, though — and something must have happened — it kept Alicia and Kalinda apart right up until the very end of season 6.

2015-05-19-1432057374-1243209-Season6Episode21TugOfWar.gif

They sort of reunite in the season’s penultimate episode, after Kalinda has fled town to avoid being killed by Lemond Bishop, when Alicia thinks back to two times they’d met before. But the flashback scenes are either filmed in such a way that the two actresses may never have even been in the same room, or are repurposed footage from season 1. Fun fact, though: although this same tug-of-war over Alicia’s phone was shown in the drunken bar night in Season 1, Episode 22, the exact moment above is shot from two different camera angles in the two episodes.

2015-05-18-1431992398-6464942-Season6Episode22KalindaOrdering.gif

In the season 6 finale, they finally reunite for real. Kalinda surprises Alicia at a bar just before she leaves town for good. She orders two tequila shots for old time’s sake.

2015-05-18-1431992366-6225483-Season6Episode22AliciaDrinking.gif

Then, though, something curious happens: Most of the shots in the scene show only one of the two actresses clearly. For that reason, many people started to speculate that they hadn’t actually filmed most of it together.

2015-05-18-1431992454-480308-Season6Episode22BothDrinking.gif

On May 15, TVLine reported, based on some anonymous inside intel, that the scene had indeed been faked. The shots that show only one face clearly were filmed with body doubles filling in for the obscured actor, while Panjabi and Margulies filmed the shots that include both characters separately, and then the footage was merged together in post-production.

2015-05-18-1431992526-68236-Season6Episode22Goodbye.gif

The fact that Panjabi and Margulies couldn’t overcome their rumored enmity even for a day of filming made the parting — likely the last time these two characters ever see each other, since Kalinda is now officially on the lam — even sadder. Kalicia is, or, was, a friendship for the ages. These drinking buddies will live in our hearts and livers forever. And we look forward to revisiting the early season heyday of their relationship many times to come.

Romeo and Juliet, Together Again, Thanks to San Francisco Ballet

I couldn’t wait to see San Francisco Ballet‘s latest offering of Romeo and Juliet. As with most companies, SF Ballet artistic director Helgi Tomasson alternates the casting of the principal parts among several dancers, and I was looking forward to seeing Maria Kochetkova and Davit Karapetyan in the leads, as well as the incomparable Pascal Molat in the demanding role of Mercutio. But this is such a fine, deep company — at the first intermission, talking with my friend Jay Gilman, I said, “I would gladly come back to see the other casts.”

Jay said, “I would gladly come back to see this cast.”

When a company’s principal dancers and soloists are this excellent, your choice of casts often comes down to those whose acting ability or personal style/charisma grabs you. My all-time favorite Romeo will have to be Yuri Possokhov, now the company’s choreographer in residence. Trained in Moscow and a member of the Bolshoi and Royal Danish Ballets before he came to San Francisco, he had magnificent dancing and acting skills, plus, frankly, major sex appeal. (Please don’t think me shallow; I mean — Romeo.) When I saw him dance his last Romeo, in tears at the end, I looked over at my friend, Ivory, who burst out, “Does he know I’m single?!” To tell the truth, I can’t remember who danced Juliet that evening.

This year, tiny, doll-faced Kochetkova, who is a wonderfully proficient ballerina, danced Juliet so girlishly at first, more Clara in Nutcracker, I wondered how she would handle the transition to sudden love and lust for Romeo. She did, of course, starting with her frank interest in the masked Romeo at her father’s ball. By the time she and the handsome Karapetyan performed their gorgeous pas de deux, with all those airy, sensual lifts, in the balcony scene, it was sexual awakening before your very eyes, so to speak. Meantime, you knew the tall and manly Karapetyan, an older ladies man of a Romeo from his flirting with another in the first act, had fallen in love with Juliet’s lovely, innocent charm.

With its sex and violence, Romeo and Juliet is truly a classic ballet crowd pleaser, at least when done right. To break your heart, it really needs dancers who are adept at physical acting, too — dancers who can go beyond the surface of the story’s emotions and embody a notion of the characters. You want to feel their lust and love, anger and heartbreak, bone-deep pain over separation and (what seems, then is) death.

Similarly, all that swordplay between Montagues and Capulets — particularly between the Capulet hothead Tybalt and Romeo’s beloved friend Mercutio, followed by Romeo himself — should have the audience tense. So thank goodness Tomasson, who choreographed this version of R&J, enlisted actor, teacher, and fight expert Martino Pistone to help develop the “fight-scene choreography” and, each time SF Ballet performs this ballet, to train the male dancers in handling those weapons. Set in the Italian Renaissance — hence all those gorgeous velvets and brocades, flowing sleeves and intricate soft caps — this production uses weapons of the period: rapiers (long swords with double-edged blades) and daggers. Each cast’s Romeo, Tybalt and Mercutio practice together, of course; and if there’s a last-minute cast change, Tomasson says it’s nerve-inducing because each duo’s timing is a bit different.

While ballet versions of Shakespeare’s inimitable 1597 play have existed since the late 1700s, most productions now are set to the full-length score composed by Sergey Prokofiev in 1935, which certainly encourages an audience’s swooning and fear. At the same time, the musical passage during Mercutio’s death scene causes it to go on far too long. Though Molat perfectly expressed in movement and mime everything from braggadocio, to careless-seeming flirting, to faltering life, you can never feel the emotions you should when among them is a trace of impatience.

Even Romeo’s anguish at finding Juliet “dead” was overacted and overlong, which kept me from crying my usual buckets of tears. (Only Paris, the wealthy suitor whom Juliet’s parents were forcing her to marry, was dispatched quickly, there in the tomb.) But then Juliet awoke and discovered her Romeo, got up the nerve to stab herself, and crept over to die beside him. When, not yet quite dead, he weakly lifted and dropped his arm over her, my evening was complete.

While this is the last program of the season (and let’s hope SF Ballet brings this beautiful tale of woe back again soon), the company will be performing four short ballets in the city’s Stern Grove Festival, for free, this summer.

May 9, matinees May 9 and 10: San Francisco Ballet, War Memorial Opera House, 301 Van Ness Ave., S.F.; July 26: short ballets, Stern Grove, 415.865.2000.

Get Your Sh*# Together When Everything Is Falling Apart

“He who does not get fun and enjoyment out of every day… needs to reorganize his life.” ― George M. Adams

The other morning was a hilarious train wreck. I started my day with deliberate calm by getting myself completely up and in my workout clothes, applying a little makeup, and spending a good 40-minutes in meditation and prayer. It was going to be a day of flow and ease!

But then my four-year-old, Elena, threw a fit because she wanted her hair to look like Queen Elsa when she is at her coronation, not like Elsa in her ice castle. My girls started fighting about their respective hair-dos and other “important” issues from the movie Frozen, and my blood pressure started rising. To top that dramatic scene off, my little guy had then a stinky diaper to change. Suddenly the clock said 8:12 and my eldest starts school at 8:15. I started yelling, “Get your shoes on! Get in the car!” My mood was quickly shifting from a calm and peaceful to a wild and stormy.

We got in the car and my phone said it was 8:32. What the heck? There was no way it had taken over 15 minutes to get from the house to the garage. Turns out my stove clock had somehow been changed and my second-grader was late for school.

By the time I got one child to elementary school and the other to preschool across town, there wasn’t enough time to head to the gym before my meeting at 10:00 a.m. Resigned, I dropped my son off with my nanny and headed to work in my gym clothes to get myself prepped for my 10 o’ clock meeting. I hadn’t confirmed my 10 o’ clock so she didn’t know we were having it. But I had it in my calendar! Seriously?!

After a few deep breaths and restraining the desire to throw something across the room, I shed a few tears and reprimanded myself, “Why can’t I get my sh*t together?!”

I got myself a fresh cup of coffee and went to grab my mail. Much to my surprise, there was a most stunning gift from one of my clients who has become a dear friend. I had to implement my own teachings on mood shifting. I lit candles, played some beautiful soothing music, and reached out to a close friend. Then…I was feeling empowered and ready to rock my business.

Ever have a day like this? You mustn’t feel alone because we all have. For me, there’s a sense of camaraderie in knowing I’m not alone that I am so grateful for. I keep re-learning that the important thing to do in these moments of uncontrollable insanity is try everything in my power to turn the tide of frustration and regain control.

I’ve listed 6 tips for avoiding or rebounding from days like this (and always want to know what works for you!):

1) Review your calendar at night or early in the morning so you have a clear idea of what your day entails. Schedule in 20 minutes before meetings so you can deliberately focus on being prepared and in the right mindset. I like to block out five minutes for meditating and another five for catching up on notes from our last meeting.

2) Do everything in your power to make your mornings flow and start your day right. Prepare your kids clothes the night before and wake up early enough to have yourself ready before everyone else. You will start your day rocking! I like to play fun music in the kitchen to get everyone in a good mood (obviously didn’t work this morning but it usually does!)

3) Sleep! The crazy kinds of days are much more frequent when you’re exhausted. We had a few friends over for dinner last night and my kids were up a little later than usual, hence the morning meltdowns. I am more prone to meltdowns when I’m tired too. Aren’t you?

4) Lean on your friends. After my debacle this morning, I called my dear friend to vent. It felt like confession, just getting off my chest how ridiculous my morning had gone. She helped me see the situation as funny, shared a similar morning from her experiences, and we laughed together. Talk about the ultimate mood shifter! That, combined with the stunning surprise gift that arrived, made me incredibly grateful for my amazing friends and family who give me the strength to rebound after the tough moments.

5) Organize your life. Everything will flow better when our lives are organized. At work, keep your emails, files, and notes in order and under control. Research how the businesswomen you admire keep their businesses organized, and try out their tactics. I keep trying various techniques and technologies, but I’ve got a system down (another blog coming on that!). The same goes for my home. The only way I can manage my burgeoning business as a single mom is to keep every aspect of my life as orderly as possible. Do what you can, and remember that each day is a chance to start over.

6) Pull yourself together aesthetically. Sounds silly, but it’s true. The days when I look disheveled, I experience more internal chaos. The more I feel sharp and put together, the more I am able to become am effective businesswoman and powerful, happy mama. Some days it’s as simple as lipstick! Other days require a shower, hair fixing, AND lipstick.

Sometimes we just have days that are more challenging – especially when kids are involved – and we simply need to go with the flow, doing everything in our power to keep calm and in a cheerful mood.

How do you keep your life “put together” and organized? Please share your tips with me and other readers. We’re all in this together!

Strangers Rally Together To Rescue Teen Driver Trapped In Flipped-Over SUV In River

These teens are lucky to be alive.

Three young men, ages 16 and 17, were in an SUV, speeding down a highway in Salt Lake City last Thursday, according to Fox13. In an attempt to avoid cars that were stopped at a traffic light, the driver swerved around the other vehicles and crashed into the Jordan River, with the truck landing on its roof, Deseret News reported.

“I saw it. The vehicle exploded in front of me right there, just pieces and parts. It’s like nothing you would see in your entire life,” witness Brian Adams told Fox13 of the wreck.

Strangers then jumped into the river, flipped the SUV over and helped save the teens.

We have three teenage boys that went to the hospital. It would have been entirely different if those people hadn’t been here,” Lt. Brian Burvis of the Salt Lake City Police Department told ABC4.

When the truck crashed, a couple ran to the river and fished the passengers out, according to the outlet. More people started piling in the water to help save the teen driver, who was stuck behind the steering wheel, and had been underwater for a few minutes, KUTV reported.

The bystanders were able to turn the truck over to its upright position to get the driver above water, while the fire department was able to remove the teen from the vehicle, the outlet reported.

Ten people jumped down into the water. Just bystanders that saw it happen, just flipped it over so that he wouldn’t die,” Adams told ABC4 of the effort to save the driver.

The three teens were brought to the hospital and are expected to make a full recovery, thanks, in part, to the strangers’ teamwork.

It was just very, very lucky,” Burvis told Deseret News.

Kim Gordon And Arcade Fire Are In A Short Film Together, Commence Collective Squee

It’s true, the noise rock woman of your dreams and members of that Canadian indie sextet that made disco cool again are in a short film together. It is, as one might expect, deliriously creepy and gorgeous.

With equal bits Dali and Dada, the short film by Marcel Dzama, titled “Une Danse Des Bouffons (The Jester’s Dance),” premiered at the Toronto Film Festival last year. Kim Gordon stars in it, while Arcade Fire’s Will Butler, Jeremy Gara, and Tim Kingsbury helped score the black-and-white bit of silent cinema.

When this project came along, I thought maybe [Kim Gordon would] be interested and I asked her and she surprisingly said yes. So I was very happy,” Dzama explained to The Huffington Post last September. “There was actually a scene where I was going to have Kim sing a disco song in it. We made this whole disco song that was really great, but I got shy about asking Kim to sing. So then I didn’t put that part in the film.”

Well, we’re pretty sure the men of Arcade Fire can make up for the lack of Gordon-crooned disco in their own brand of ethereal soundscapes. Check out the trailer for the Dzama masterpiece below. The music will released as a 7″ via The Believer magazine. So we can all be excited about that.

When Is The Right Time To Move In Together? Survey Says…

It’s the age-old question that consistently plagues couples: when is the right time to move-in together?

A lot of unknowns come into play here, which makes the decision so much more difficult. Is it too soon? Will it save me money? Will it cost me money? Will it hurt our relationship? What if he/she discovers I’m actually a hoarder of Cat Fancy?

The folks at Rent.com wanted to get to the bottom of this and asked 1,000 cohabiting renters their thoughts on how long couples should date before making the big move.

According to the survey, 37 percent said six months to a year is an appropriate amount of time, 29 percent said more than one year, and 18 percent said to wait until after marriage. You can see all the results in the infographic below.

move in infographic

But what happened once these couples made the move? Was it all butterflies and rainbows?

Once couples shacked up, 63 percent said they rarely have a night with just their friends, and 58 percents said weekends are spent staying home with their S.O.

And though 27 percent of respondents said they moved in together within less than six months of dating, only seven percent of people surveyed recommended doing that.

However, on the bright side, almost half of those surveyed said the upside to moving in was spending more time with their loved one. And 32 percent said moving in together helped them realize they had found “the one.”

What do you think? What’s the right time to say “I do… want to move in with you?”

The Cute Food Ritual That Keeps This Couple Together

Pizza is a many-splendored thing. And for one Los Angeles couple, it’s also the very thing that keeps their marriage together.

Tina Sugandh and Tarz Ludwigsen, who starred on the Bravo reality show “Newlyweds: The First Year”, stopped by HuffPost Live on Friday to discuss their love contract — a legal document that establishes ground rules about how partners will behave within the relationship. One of their most important tenets? Pizza Fridays.

Article 4.4 of the contract states that they will continue having a “pizza picnic” at home every Friday night. Additionally, both parties “agree to keep this time free from all phone calls and other interruptions. No friends or business colleagues will be invited to Pizza Fridays.”

In the interview, Sugandh explained to host Ricky Camilleri why they take this lighthearted tradition so seriously.

“It’s very very easy to say, ‘Oh, I want to hang out with my sister. She’s having a thing on Friday night.’ Or ‘My dad’s going to pop by on Friday night,'” she said. “But if you don’t save one little time slot a week for your husband, how do you bond? You need time to talk about your week and get it all out.”

For more on Sugandh and Ludwigsen’s relationship contract, watch the video above. Then, head here to watch the full segment.

You’re Married. Now What? How to Say ‘I Do’ to a Solid Financial Future Together

“I do.”

Remember when you spoke those words at your wedding? Perhaps it was in front of family and friends. Or maybe it was just the two of you on a beach or in front of a justice of the peace.

Do you recall the tears streaming down your face as you looked into your partner’s eyes, knowing that this was the person you’d committed to spend the rest of your life with, until death you do part?

At that moment, you probably weren’t thinking about savings and checking accounts, stocks and other investments or credit scores. You were thinking, “This is the happiest day of my life.”

Well, not so fast.

While being married has put you in a state of bliss, you need to come down off of your cloud for a minute and have a conversation with your partner about finances. In fact, I’d love to help you and your partner secure a solid and happy financial future together, now and forever. Just follow these tips.

How to Say “I Do” to a Solid Financial Future Together

1. Review bank accounts, credit scores and credit card statements.

Gather your bank statements, credit scores and credit card statements and compare notes. How much money do the both of you have? What are your credit scores? What are your credit card balances? Review all of this information. And if one of you has a lower credit score than the other, it’s a good idea to create a plan to raise the credit score. How? First, stop using your credit cards! Second, double your monthly payments, if you can. It’s important that you and your partner are on the same page when it comes to finances.

2. Create a monthly budget, and stick to it.

Creating a budget is super easy. You can either grab a pen and paper or use a software program. You’ll want to include the following:

  • Rent/mortgage
  • Insurance: car, home and/or renters
  • Expenses: utilities (gas, electric and water and sewer) and phone
  • Car payment (if any)
  • Grocery
  • Child support (if any)
  • Child’s school (if any)
  • Adult education
  • Entertainment
  • Cable (or another provider)
  • Internet
  • Cell/mobile phone
  • Other

After you’ve created your budget, review it together and make necessary adjustments. See where you can cut back. If you can’t adjust the figures, make sure you stick to your monthly budget, no matter what.

3. Review investment portfolios monthly.

If you have investment portfolios, sit down with your financial advisor/manager and discuss how you can make changes to increase your investments and/or diversify. For example, if you’ve been playing it safe, you may want to look into more aggressive stocks. On the flip side, if you’ve been too aggressive, you may want to rethink your strategy and be more conservative. Your financial manager will help you choose the best investment options.

4. Compare salaries and know when to ask for a raise.

How much do you make? If you’ve been working your way up the company ladder and earn a healthy salary, congratulations! But if you’ve been working and haven’t received a raise or don’t think you’ve received a raise that is worthy of you and your work, you may want to approach your boss and ask for a raise. While this may scare you, it can be done — the right way. Do not be confrontational. Point out your contributions and market value. If your boss pushes back, gently remind him/her of your results. If the answer is “No,” either accept it or look for another job.

5. Choose a monthly amount to deposit into a separate savings account.

Now, more than ever, it is important to have an emergency fund. Why? Because you don’t know what could happen now or in the future. You or your partner could get laid off from work, permanently lose your job, need to take care of an aging parent or sick child, or experience another life-altering event. Establishing a monthly amount to be deposited into a savings account that is not to be touched is a must. You may not want to do it, but you need to do this, now.

6. Live within your means.

Your mom and dad may have told you to live within your means. Did you listen? If not, it’s time to start listening. Whenever you’re about to purchase something, ask, “Do I need or want this?” If you don’t need (fill in the blank), why do you want it? Make sure you have a good answer. If you don’t need (fill in the blank), don’t buy it. Why? Because you may have buyer’s remorse or you could find a better deal at another store or online; keep your options open.

7. Start investing.

If you don’t have an investment portfolio, you and your partner may want to hire a financial advisor. It’s never too late to invest. Here’s a tip: Go through your home and look at the products you bought. Find the company and/or brand name and conduct an online search to see if they’re on the NYSE or NASDAQ. Research, i.e. has the stock gone up or down? Ask your financial advisor about the fluidity (money flows, hardly any debt) of the companies. If the companies are solid, consider purchasing their stock. You may want to look into real estate investing. However, you must be ready and prepared to be a landlord. You may consider “fixing and flipping” homes, but this takes some skill. Plus, when you start tearing down walls, you may find problems like faulty electrical work that you didn’t anticipate. Consult a professional real estate investor before you buy an investment property. But whatever you do, start investing, now.

8. Get a side job or start a business.

Okay, so you and your partner work 40 or more hours per week and may not have time for a side job. However, you can earn extra money doing what you love. For example, do you like to bake? Consider opening an online cupcake business. You could specialize in gluten-free and vegan cupcakes or offer customers specific cupcakes, e.g. red velvet and chocolate. Maybe your partner is a fantastic artist. He/she could create paintings and sell them online. You may find that both you and your partner have a knack for running your own business. You could eventually quit your day jobs.

9. Sell your stuff.

Now that you’re married, go through all of your stuff and get rid of what you haven’t used in a year or more. Toss out anything that is worn out, but sell everything that is gently used. Why? Because you can earn extra money and deposit it into your emergency savings account; every little bit helps.

10. Keep the lines of communication open.

Most important is to keep communicating with one another. Do not shut down if your partner makes a mistake, i.e. charges a pair of $ 500 shoes. Sure, you may not be happy about it, but it’s not the end of the world. Calmly speak about the importance of creating a solid financial future together. If you need help, seek counseling from a marriage or financial counselor or both. Whatever you do, do not throw your marriage away at the first bump you have. It won’t be 100 percent perfect all of the time. And remember: Sometimes, marriage isn’t like a merry-go-round; it’s more like a roller coaster. And if you think about it, what’s more fun? A ride that goes around and around or one that’s filled with thrills and chills?

To secure a solid financial future, you and your partner need to be willing to be honest about finances and hopefully were on the same page before you got married.

If you save $ 100, a month that’s $ 1,200 a year plus some interest; multiply that by two years and that’s $ 2,400 with some interest. After a few years, you could take some of the money, invest it and triple, maybe even quadruple your investment. Your financial manager can assist you with this.

Having a solid financial future together is closer to possible than you think.
