AT&T Getting ‘Tough’ on HBO? More Like Tough Love

When a conversation from a high-level internal meeting somehow makes its way into the press, that’s typically going to expose troubling news about the company involved. But in the curious case of a closed-door town hall last month between the new head of AT&T’s content arm and 150 employees from its newly acquired division, HBO, […]

William H. Macy on Shameless Son’s Arrest for Alleged DUI: ‘Hollywood Is Tough on Kids’

William H. Macy is a concerned father — on- and off-screen.

The Shameless actor recently spoke out about his TV son Ethan Cutkosky’s arrest for an alleged DUI, acknowledging that growing up in the spotlight can be challenging for young actors.

“I love those guys,” he told TMZ of the Showtime series’ Gallagher brood, who struggle to raise themselves and deal with their alcoholic father, played by Macy.

“I worry about them,” he added. “A young person growing up as an actor — Hollywood is tough on kids.”

Of 18-year-old Cutkosky, who plays Carl Gallagher, Macy, 67, said he’s a “great guy.”

Cutkosky was arrested Wednesday in Los Angeles for allegedly driving under the influence, according to multiple reports.

Burbank police pulled Cutkosky’s vehicle over after it was allegedly spotted straddling traffic lines, the Associated Press reported. He was later arrested, with blood-alcohol test still pending.

Cutkosky, who was reportedly driving an orange BMW, was given a field sobriety test during the pull-over, TMZ reported. Sources told the outlet that Cutkosky allegedly admitted to smoking marijuana that night.

According to Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department records obtained by PEOPLE, Cutkosky was released on a $ 5,000 bail by Thursday morning. He was charged with a misdemeanor but no further information on his charges was available.

Reps for Cutkosky did not respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment, and the Los Angeles Police Department would not comment further.

Ivanka Trump Faces Groans, Boos and Tough Questions About Her Father on Official Berlin Trip

Not long after Ivanka Trump arrived in Berlin for her first international trip as part of the White House administration for President Donald Trump, she was tasked with defending her father’s attitudes towards women.

At the invitation of German Chancellor Angela Merkel, the first daughter participated in the W20 Summit alongside Merkel, Queen Maxima of the Netherlands and five others for a panel on women’s entrepreneurship on Tuesday. However, Trump was immediately grilled by the moderator and met by a skeptical audience.

“You’re the first daughter of the United States, and you’re also an assistant to the president,” the moderator, WirtschaftsWoche editor-in-chief Miriam Meckel, asked her first, according to Politico. “The German audience is not that familiar with the concept of a first daughter. I’d like to ask you, what is your role, and who are you representing, your father as president of the United States, the American people, or your business?”

“Certainly not the latter,” Trump replied. “I’m rather unfamiliar with this role as well … It has been a little under 100 days and it has just been a remarkable and incredible journey.”

The tough questions kept coming, with an audible groan from the audience Trump said her father was a “tremendous champion of supporting families and enabling them to thrive” while praising President Trump for supporting paid leave policies.

The moderator stepped in following the room’s reaction, prompting her to ask if the president was an “empowerer of women” despite his history of lewd comments towards them.

“I know from personal experience, and I think the thousands of women who have worked with and for my father for decades when he was in the private sector are a testament to his belief and solid conviction in the potential of women and their ability to do the job as well as any man,” the mother of three responded.

“As a daughter, I can speak on a very personal level,” she added, according to Politico. “I grew up in a house where there was no barriers to what I could accomplish beyond my own perseverance and tenacity. That’s not an easy thing to do, he provided that for us.”

Trump said that her father treated her exactly the same way he treated her two brothers, Donald Jr. and Eric.

“There was no difference,” she said.

Trump’s schedule in Berlin on Tuesday also includes a visit to the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe and the W-20 gala dinner.

Chris Soules Reveals Breakup With Whitney Bischoff Has Been ‘Really Tough’

Their amazing journey has finally come to an end, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t a rough road ahead.

After Chris Soules and Whitney Bischoff “mutually and amicably” decided to end their engagement, which a rep confirmed to The Huffington Post, the “Bachelor” couple is now opening up about the split. Soules took to Twitter recently to thank fans for their support, revealing that the breakup has been “really tough”:

Soules’ former better half Bischoff has also taken to social media to thank everyone for their “outpouring love, kindness and support,” posting a video of one adorable little supporter:

With the split, Soules and Bischoff join a long line of “Bachelor” and “Bachelorette” couples that just didn’t work out.

Even with the bad statistics, fans shouldn’t totally give up on TV romances just yet. “Bachelor” couple Sean Lowe and Catherine Giudici are now reportedly trying to have a baby, which is great news, because if beautiful people can’t fall in love in front of millions in a short amount of time on a reality show, what hope is there for the rest of us?

14 Things Only People With Tough Names Understand

For TueNight.com by Siobhan Adcock

1. I grew up with a tough name. Siobhan Adcock. Look at it. There’s almost no part of that name that’s not sort of a pain in the ass.

2. People don’t tend to remember it, and when they do, they can’t pronounce it. Siobhan is an Irish name — it means Jane, or Joan, or Joanne, or if you’re feeling like a sparkly unicorn fairy, “sea foam blowing off the waves.” My father told me (incorrectly, as it turns out) that it means “Queen of the Emerald Isles.” He and my mother had heard of it by way of Siobhan McKenna, the famous Irish stage actress who was in Dr. Zhivago. (But not the famously beautiful actress who was in Dr. Zhivago. And also not the second-most beautiful actress in Dr. Zhivago. The other one.)

3. My father’s name, by the way, was Dick. They don’t really name kids that anymore. Especially with a last name like Adcock. Dick Adcock, Jr. Because his father’s name was also Richard. So when my dad was growing up, there was Big Dick Adcock and Little Dick Adcock. No one, apparently, in the early 1950s, thought that was a problem.

4. When I was a kid there was this, um, spread? Like an oleo type of thing? It was light and silky. Chiffon had probably one of the catchier two-word jingles of the ’70s and early ’80s: “It’s… Chiffon!” Every time I got on the school bus, I had to be announced. By everyone. Often in five-point harmony. “It’s… Sio-ffan!”

5. Since my last name starts with an A, every year on the first day of school, I was inevitably the first name on the roll to be called. The fresh, shiny new roll. Oh, my teachers. I pitied them. Here it was, the beginning of a new school year, the school year they hoped they wouldn’t fuck up or make embarrassing mistakes during (especially not on day one), and you could just see their fresh, young, expectant faces crumple and fall when they realized they weren’t even going to be able to get past the first name on the roll call without asking for help.

I’d usually let them suffer in silence for a second or two, squinting and frowning down at the list of names, and then mutter, “Here. I’m here. It’s me, Siobhan.”

Ultimately, you have to make it easy on people.

6. When I go to a restaurant and leave my name for a table, I tell them I’m Suzanne. Or Sabrina. Or Soybean. All actual pronunciation attempts I have heard.

7. You can imagine what I tell baristas.

8. Long ago, I arrived at a formula for how to respond when I’m asked to spell my name. This is especially essential for forms filled out by baffled clipboard holders:

“S-i-o. (Pause here.) B as in Boy. (Another pause.) h-a-n. Last name: A-d-c (Emphasize the c. Then a long, long pause here, almost long enough to make them think you’re done, before the finale.) o-c-k.”

About 50 percent of the time, I get: “A-d what?”

“C-O-C-K. COCK! COCK!”

“Cock?”

9. And then I went into digital publishing, primarily at women’s websites, and as such, I’ve had a lot of awesome email addresses:

sadcock@women.com

sadcock@ivillage.com

sadcock@theknot.com

All the places a cock could ostensibly be sad, I have worked at.

10. I imagine other people with “cock” in their last names also have this problem, but I’ve discovered that I actually can’t register for a new email address with my real name anymore, because it sets off a spam filter, and I’m asked to “choose another name.” (You choose another name, Yahoo!)

11. My sister, Gillian Adcock, has, for many years, been a teacher at a local high school. When she was single, she kept her last name a secret at work — she had to. For all these lovable teenagers, she was only ever “Miss A” for years, until she got married and then became Mrs. Fletcher. I mean, can you imagine what a roomful of teenagers would do with something like “Miss Adcock”?

12. When I got married, I had the opportunity, at last, to change my last name. I went to the marriage license place in downtown Brooklyn with my soon-to-be husband, whose last name is innocuous and contains no filthy words. I probably could have changed my first name too while I was at it — nobody in that office seems like they’re paying a whole lot of attention. But I didn’t. Looking down at the form, I understood that I didn’t want to. My father died when I was in college, and we’re not in great touch with what’s left of his side of the family, and I didn’t want the Adcocks, our Adcocks, the Adcocks with the balls, to name their children ridiculous things like “Dick” — twice — and then, later, “Siobhan,” to perish from this Earth. I kept my name.

I am also lazy and didn’t want to deal with a lot of paperwork.

Adcock it is, then. Forever.

13. I always thought that when I finally had a kid I’d name her Jane, or Kate, or Mary. But I didn’t. We gave out daughter a name that combined our grandmothers’ names. It’s phonetic, at least, but it’s not super-recognizable or common. You don’t actually want a common name, I’ve found. After 40-plus years as Siobhan Adcock (God, when you say it out loud, there’s even the suggestion of “nads” in there — it really might be the second filthiest name ever, after Big Dick Adcock), I now know that an uncommon name gives you something to live up to, and that’s both a challenge and a stroke of luck. So we gave her a name that people will ask her annoying questions about all her life.

14. When I was in college, I worked at the library. And one day, this guy came in. And he checked out some books. And when he left, I kept the screen open on his record and just stared at it for a while, feeling like some previously unknown, oddly comforting corner of the universe had arrived before me, and called out its name:

Anil Dikshit.

Don’t Ask Me To Sponsor Your Tough Mudder Race

2015-05-16-1431804150-5059740-0112_ToughGuyChallenge_11302011_Sidebar1.jpg

◊◊◊

The picture above is of a guy LITERALLY running through fire. That’s not a photoshop. It isn’t CGI. It’s dry brush (probably from Texas. Texas has the good brush) set on FIRE. His life, apparently, is so bad that he is running through burning bushes and basically immolating himself. I need to know. Does he have like a classroom of kids at home or are his in-laws living in that pseudo-illegal apartment above the garage?

No?

Is he training for special forces? No? Are you sure? Okay, but he has a number on his chest, so this must be something important enough that it warrants a permanent record of this grand event.

No. Nothing important.

We’re approaching Memorial Day, and though it’s widely adopted as the unofficial start of the summer season, it’s also the unofficial start to your asshole co-worker asking you if you want to do this year’s Tough Mudder with him–or Spartan Race, or Gladiator Walk, or WARRIOR DASH, OR WHATEVER THE FUCK YOU’RE CALLING YOUR DUMB RACE.

Here’s a scenario that I just thought up but is probably close to one-hundred percent accurate:

[Typical office conversation between a guy doing one of these races and myself if I had an office job.]

Bro: Bro… you want to do Tough Mudder with me this year? It’s a crazy course, bro.

Me: (Doesn’t reply. Just walks away.)

Contrary to their names, this adult playpen that you’re going to has literally nothing to do with or is in no way associated with and should never be confused with ancient Rome or gladiators. Or high school football players for that matter.

Look at the picture below. I mean holy shit!!! POP QUIZ: One of these guys is doing a Tough Mudder, and the other was in THE MOVIE, Apocalypto.

2015-05-16-1431804059-1436177-1.png

Figure it out? Ya. I couldn’t either.

These races are a lot of things — mainly they just fall into the descriptive adjectives column like ridiculous and fucking ridiculous– but what they are not are races designed around methods used by Russel Crowe when he was bulking up for the role of Maximus. Don’t let Don from Accounts Receivable fool you. He’s no more of a man than you because he climbed up a mud wall with oiled up ropes studded with cactus thorns (Cacti thorns?). You still drive a Dodge Dart, Don. And I doubt that the Spartans who fought in the Battle of Thermopylae had toe fungus.

Your void of innate masculinity is really astounding, Mr. Endurance Guy, so I understand this desire of yours to “challenge yourself.” Actually, I don’t. But it makes perfect sense that these glorified obstacle courses would be created by Ivy leaguers– two Havard Business School grads, in fact. Because really, what evokes toughness, gladiator biceps, and human growth hormone inundation like a couple of twenty-six year old hardos named Seth and Dougie…

BUT I GOT A MEDAL AND A RIBBON, GOD DAMMIT!!!!!

Congratulations. You just rewound your life to 4th grade. Has that 5K mud race certificate of authenticity gotten you laid by chance– by a human, I mean?

What ever happened to snuggling up on a banquet seat with a ginger tea and Jonathan Franzen novel on a Saturday? What? I’m not a man you say? Excuse me, but real men vacuum. I don’t need to pound my chest like an ape and prove my testosterone count to anyone…

Except you, girl.

2015-05-16-1431803714-8256758-cutegirl.jpg

I wouldn’t mind washing that mud off of you if you know what I mean (wink emoji).

American Apparel Faces Tough Set of Challenges

American Apparel Inc. is teetering on the edge of chaos.
And if that in itself is nothing new, this time around the retailer’s facing an unusually thorny set of challenges on multiple fronts:
• Ousted founder Dov Charney continues to stir up trouble, from agitating an already disgruntled workforce to seeking a backer to buy the firm, moving ahead with arbitration and, tonight, appearing on ABC’s “20/20.”
• Fourth-quarter losses widened as sales fell more than 9 percent and workers are being furloughed at the Los Angeles factory.
• The brand is being reimagined with more of a social emphasis and some of the scantily clad sales associates long featured in its ads will be replaced with models.
• Shareholders have sued the company, claiming it failed to maintain control of its colorful founder.
Under Charney, American Apparel honed controversy to a high art and lurched from one loan with a sky-high interest rate to the next — always keeping just a step ahead of both the debt collector and Miss Manners.
But this time it’s not Charney who’s courting lenders, pumping up the brand and generally keeping the plates spinning at one of the most prominent U.S. apparel producers. That job now falls to chief executive officer Paula Schneider, who
