Contemporary Artist Pops Up at Fashion Trade Show

BOOZY STATE OF MIND: American painter Laurance Rassin — best known in the art world as an international star whose impressionistic works bring to mind Picasso and Matisse — has a pops gig in addition to his art work and fashion designs.
The artist has reinvented the ice pop via Fruta Pop, which takes out the high fructose corn syrup and adds in fresh fruits and vegetables, while its “poptails” add a small amount — less than 5 percent — of alcohol infusion. Rassin is a cofounder of the company. Flavors available on the company’s site for the 3 oz. pop include nonalcoholic fruit and juice pops, cold-brew coffee pops and the boozy poptails in flavors of Coconut Rosé, Sparkling Prosecco Mango Mimosa, Moscow Mule and Brosé Rosé. The pops can be ordered for delivery anywhere in the world.
On Sunday and Monday, Rassin was holding court at the contemporary fashion trade show Fame at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in Manhattan with the Fame logo emblazoned on two pop flavors, Watermelon Margarita and Pina Colada. It’s the latest event-branding campaign for the pops. Past campaign clients have included Banana Republic, Two-Faced, Andaz hotel, Warner Bros., Orla Kiely, Project X, French Connection, Bloomingdale’s

Manny Machado trade market: Eight teams talking to Orioles, but these two are the front-runners

Given that the Orioles are terrible and that pending free agent Manny Machado is the opposite of terrible, it seems highly likely that the star infielder will be moved in advance of the non-waiver trade deadline.  Machado in his age-25 season is batting .311/.378/.565 (160 OPS+) with 21 home runs in 83 games. That's on pace to be easily a career year for Machado, and he's also proved himself capable of returning to the shortstop position in 2018. He's going to get paid this coming offseason, and he may wind up fetching a bigger contract than Bryce Harper does.  In the here and now, though, Machado is very likely on his way to a contender. Here's what CBS Sports HQ MLB analyst Jim Bowden says

Upbeat Mood Prevails at New York Men’s Trade Shows

NEW YORK — New year, bright outlook.
That sums up the mood of specialty stores shopping the men’s trade shows here. A strong end to 2017, a soaring stock market and some tempting merchandise options for fall all combined to boost retailers’ spirits.
“Holiday was great,” said Ken Giddon, president of Rothmans, which operates three men’s stores in New York. “There have been some weather difficulties in January but that’s OK. We had a surprisingly strong fall so inventories are not what we had expected. My mood is good — it’s an exciting time to be a retailer.”
He said he has been working more with his suppliers to create partnerships that benefit both. “Every conversation is not: ‘What are you selling and how much is it?’ But it’s, ‘How can we work together.’ That’s what it’s going to take to make the wholesale model work today and I actually enjoy making deals almost more than I enjoy looking at merchandise.”
That said, Giddon did manage to find several brands that he liked at the shows. “I’m surprised at how many great Scandinavian brands there are,” he said, pointing to the Scandinavian Man section at Project. He especially liked Hestra gloves and Cords trousers.

Aaron Levant Retires From the Trade Show Business

Aaron Levant is ready for a new challenge. Levant, who founded the Agenda trade show when he was 19, is retiring from the business.
“There wasn’t an exit plan. It wasn’t something that I’ve contemplated for a long time. It’s something I’ve been thinking about for the past two or three months,” said Levant as he was arriving at the final Agenda Long Beach trade show that he will manage in California. “For me, it’s all about continuing to learn new stuff and take on new challenges, and as far as events and trade shows, I’ve learned everything that I can.”
Levant started Agenda, which is dedicated to the skate, surf and streetwear categories, in the back of a Thai restaurant in Long Beach in 2003. In 2013, Reed Exhibitions acquired the show for an undisclosed sum and Levant stayed on to help grow Agenda, oversee other shows and launch new ones.
For the past few years, Levant, who has said he believes the trade show category is dead, has transitioned Agenda from a business-to-business show to a more consumer-facing event. Wu Wear Returns at Vegas Trade Show

Wu Wear is officially back.
Wu-Tang Clan’s apparel line, one of the first created by hip-hop artists, will reenter the market and is showing at the Agenda trade show in Las Vegas this week.

Independents Upbeat at New York Men’s Trade Shows

NEW YORK — Retailers at the men’s trade shows here this week had one primary category on their minds: sportswear.
Gone are the days when buyers scoured the fairs for new tailored clothing labels. As stores, particularly independents, continue to battle a disinterested consumer, macroeconomic factors and the growing power of Amazon, executives were mainly looking to pick up new casualwear brands to complement their existing offerings.
The good news is that the formula seems to be working: Most independents interviewed said business has picked up slightly and they’re keeping their fingers crossed the trend will continue.
Ken Giddon, president of New York’s Rothmans, noted that thanks to a successful pop-up with Psycho Bunny — “our best pop-up ever” — the store had “a really good June.”
“We’re flexible enough to keep bobbing and weaving,” he added.
For the men’s specialty store, that means de-emphasizing tailored clothing and keeping customers interested by featuring a rotating series of pop-up shops. “It’s part of our model now,” Giddon said. “It works to always have something fresh.”
He said “tailored clothing is becoming a smaller part of the business, but we’re growing other parts,” especially sportswear. He especially liked Stitch Note’s short-sleeve wovens, Benson and Rodd & Gunn’s sportswear,

Buyers Seek Standouts With Identity at Paris Men’s Trade Shows

PARIS — It was all about having a strong identity at the recent spring 2018 men’s trade shows here. Homespun, cultural references, vintage and surf styles and streetwear were selling well, with buyers seeking standout items and new discoveries to complement their core designer offering and differentiate themselves, rather than seeking out specific trends.
“Trends are hard to build a business around these days,” observed Chris Thomas, director of retail for Melbourne, Australia’s Service Denim Stores. “We’re looking for accessories to accentuate our core offer that have a point of uniqueness in the Australian market,” he said. “The ability to be unisex is important, too.”
Indeed, more and more brands were showing what they described as “unisex” collections as the trend for outsize gender-neutral garments continues to gain traction. Labels that tapped into heritage styles and techniques, especially from Japan and France, were also popular, as were new takes on performance wear.
Brands showing at Tranoï, Man and Capsule, held over the weekend during Paris Men’s Fashion Week, said foot traffic had been relatively slow, although key buyers had walked through, with a strong presence from Asian, especially Japan, and U.K.-based retailers.

The Street Art Hiding On The 69th Floor Of One World Trade Center

Is street art still street art if it dwells not on storefronts and avenues but 69 floors up in a Manhattan skyscraper? This is the question at the root of “ART4WTC: Gallery in the Sky,” an artistic collaboration between street art legends in the unlikely setting of One World Trade Center.

Ron English, Jenna Morello, Lauren YS, Stickymonger and Kimyon333 are among the artists contributing to the project, which collapses the space between renegade, guerrilla artwork and corporate design.

“What I find so entertaining is this contradiction of terms on all levels,” creative producer Robert Marcucci said in a statement. “And the fact that it is nestled in this very corporate structure gives it the attention I think it deserves ― a proper look at a contemporary art movement born out of a extremely stressed fabric of modern society, that is evolving more and more each day, blending various styles of art and sending a message out to larger audiences.”

Marcucci explained that the recruited artists had free rein to create whatever they so pleased in the space of the open 69th floor, though they were encouraged to seek inspiration from New York City, as well as the memory of 9/11 and ideas of rebirth, strength and patriotism.

The project, dubbed an “art world in the sky,” captures the strange juxtaposition of corporate wealth and street energy that is unique to New York City. See some of the work below.

Buyers Upbeat at Paris Men’s Trade Shows

PARIS — With Japanese buyers back in force, a positive energy pulsed through the men’s trade fairs, Capsule, Man and Tranoi, held here in tandem with the men’s runway shows. While spends were flat on-year, buyers’ moods were upbeat.
“This is a good time in men’s wear,” said Wanda Colon, chief merchandising officer at Unkwn, an urban concept store targeting Florida’s 18-25 set.
“This show [Capsule] is a good integration of what’s happening in fashion now – a mix of very high with accessible, what big box stores are trying to do,” she continued. “To cultivate this youthful feeling, not necessarily young, but savvy, very active on social media. A lot of brand energy right now is coming from that. And stores are chasing these young, alternative independents because they’ve seen the energy and buying power of this customer.”
Trading on the youth influence as a launchpad, Capsule showed four labels voted into the show by followers of Tranoi curated Atelier, a space for young designers, at its inaugural Carreau de Temple show.

White Trade Show Gears Up for January Edition

The Milan-based White trade show is gearing up for its next edition, encouraged by the growing interest of visitors and buyers. Running Jan. 14 to 16 and focusing on men’s and women’s contemporary ready-to-wear and accessories collections, White will showcase 270 exhibitors, registering an 18 percent increase compared to January 2016.
Replicating the successful formula of showing both men’s and women’s collections at the same time, the upcoming edition will count 197 women’s labels, 63 of which will preview their collections in the fair’s “Only Woman” area.
“The numbers confirm the success of our [format],” said White’s founder Massimiliano Bizzi at a press event on Dec. 15, also highlighting the positive moment Milan is currently having in terms of attractiveness.
Bizzi underscored the importance of the Only Woman area as a chance to preview women’s collections two months ahead of other shows and reiterated the modern approach of the fair in presenting men’s wear and women’s wear concurrently.
“[This approach] plays also an important economic role, because men’s wear globally represents a relatively small percentage in the industry,” explained Bizzi, stressing how aligning the presentations reduces the costs for the companies.

This ethnography examines farmers’ lives on the island of St. Lucia amidst the threat of market loss for their primary export product, bananas. Karla Slocum’s study demonstrates how, when prices for bananas declined and trade policies changes, St. Lucia’s banana producers formed a social movement. They deployed their labor and land use practices and discourses in ways that affirmed the meaning of their local communities and their nation rather than taking on global market pressure directly. Slocum reveals how local and national areas remain important to people’s lives even when they must live in a globalizing world. Specifically, Slocum’s work disagrees with popular claims that globalization overtakes local communities. This book will be of particular interest to those in the fields of social movements and activism, labor, Afro-Caribbean populations and those concerned with African Diaspora studies.

Medicine, Trade and Empire

Medicine, Trade and Empire

Garcia de Orta’s Colloquies on the Simples and Drugs of India (1563) was one of the first books to take advantage of the close relationship between medicine, trade and empire in the early modern period. The book was printed in Goa, the capital of the Portuguese empire in the East, and the city where the author, a Portuguese physician of Jewish ancestry, lived for almost thirty years. It presents a vast array of medical information on various drugs, spices, plants, fruits and minerals native to India or adjoining territories. In addition, it includes information concerning indigenous methods of healing as well as a far-reaching assessment of ancient and modern authors on Asian materia medica. Orta’s book had a market in Asia but was particularly valuable to a European audience. It soon attracted the attention of various European authors and printers by providing the basis for adaptations, commentaries and editions in various languages, prompting a successful and complex trail of medical knowledge in transit. Authored by an interdisciplinary team of prominent international scholars, the volume takes into account recent historiographical trends and provides a contextualized and innovative analysis of the histories and reception of the Colloquies. It emphasizes the value of the work to historians today as a symbol of the impact of geographical expansion and globalization in a sixteenth-century medical world.

Adventures in the Trade Wind

Adventures in the Trade Wind

This is at once the biography of an Englishman who became the pioneering charterboat skipper of an American yacht, and a history of the charterboat business in the islands. Morris Nicholson’s story reflects a time now all but vanished in the islands, beginning when they were neglected colonial outposts and a single yacht meant income for the islanders. In no other book is there an account of how skippered yachts, bareboats, and headboats came to sail the Caribbean Sea and became an economic sector. However it is Nicholson’s story-and his stories of others-that drives the narrative and fills it with human interest.

Trend-Right Men’s Lines From the Las Vegas Trade Shows

The men’s market is in a relaxed mood.
With sales picking up in the second half and some popular items for fall already emerging, retailers shopping the trade shows in Las Vegas were feeling little stress.
Adding to the optimism were the spring fashion trends of colorful swimwear, comfortable ath-leisurewear and nautical influences in everything from outerwear to accessories. The marriage of function and fashion was also a key market mover, with merchants embracing utilitarian detailing in garments that also sported performance attributes.

“Men’s fashion moves at a glacial pace,” said Patty Leto, senior vice president of merchandising for the Doneger Group. But that pace is quickening as the male consumers’ desire for fashion heats up, she added. Driving the men’s wear acceleration, she said, was the influence of beachwear, ath-leisure and the continued demand for performance.
Key volume drivers for the season, according to the Doneger team, include graphic Ts, printed tank tops, unconstructed sport coats, flat-front shorts, joggers, true activewear and printed swimwear.
Tommy Fazio, president of Project, said the two biggest categories at this market were swimwear and the “whole California lifestyle. Those are the big growth opportunities.”

The World Market for Base Metal Imitation Jewelry: A 2009 Global Trade Perspective

The World Market for Base Metal Imitation Jewelry: A 2009 Global Trade Perspective

This report was created for strategic planners, international executives and import/export managers who are concerned with the market for base metal imitation jewelry. With the globalization of this market, managers can no longer be contented with a local view. Nor can managers be contented with out-of-date statistics that appear several years after the fact. I have developed a methodology, based on macroeconomic and trade models, to estimate the market for base metal imitation jewelry for those countries serving the world market via exports or supplying from various countries via imports. I do so for the current year based on a variety of key historical indicators and econometric models. On the demand side, exporters and strategic planners approaching the world market face a number of questions. Which countries are supplying base metal imitation jewelry? What is the dollar value of these imports? How much do the imports of base metal imitation jewelry vary from one country to another? Do exporters serving the world market have similar market shares across the importing countries? Which countries supply the most exports of base metal imitation jewelry? Which countries are buying their exports? What is the value of these exports and which countries are the largest buyers?
