Theresa May Steps Down as U.K. Prime Minister, Pound Surges

LONDON – Theresa May announced her resignation as Prime Minister earlier today. Her resignation will come into effect June 7 and a leadership contest will begin in the following week for her replacement.
May will take on a caretaker role until a new leader has been elected. “I have done everything I can to convince MPs to back that deal. Sadly, I have not been able to do so. I tried three times,” she said in a speech delivered at Downing Street.
Earlier this week, May put offered Members of Parliament the chance to vote on whether to hold a second Brexit referendum as one of the new proposals under her amended Withdrawal Agreement Bill. The pound shot up as high as $ 1.28 in response. It fell back down over the past two days, to around $ 1.26, but following her resignation speech Friday, it shot up to $ 1.27.
However, Tory MPs said that they will have to oppose the Withdrawal Agreement with tabloids speculating that 46 members of May’s party will vote down the latest iteration.
The Bill, laid out in November last year and amended three times since then, has been continually rejected.
“It is, and will always remain, a matter of deep regret

FabFitFun Expands to the U.K.

SELLING THE LA LIFE: FabFitFun, the subscription box service, is crossing the pond and making its lifestyle services available to the U.K.
The move follows an $ 80 million Series A funding completed in January, with the company aiming to use part of the funds toward international expansion.
“We’ve had a lot of interest in FabFitFun from consumers all over the world with a high concentration of interest in the U.K. That, combined with the fact that there are no language barriers, a lot of overlap in cultural interests, and similar seasons, put the U.K. market at the top of our list,” said the company’s cofounder Katie Rosen Kitchens.
The company believes the biggest opportunity lies in the breadth of its services, which extend beyond the subscription box to a streaming service that offers on-demand videos on a wide variety of topics such as cooking, fitness or relationships; members-only flash sales, and access to an active social network.
“We are a lifestyle membership and the subscription box is one component. That’s what’s allowed us to thrive where others have not been as successful,” added Rosen Kitchens, pointing to customers’ ability to customize the boxes they receive and get a taste of the L.A. lifestyle, as

Nike to Open New U.K. Headquarters at London’s King’s Cross

NIKE’S LONDON MOVE: Nike is slipping on its running shoes and heading north to King’s Cross in London. It plans to move its headquarters to the new development there, joining Google, Facebook, Universal Music and LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton, which have already moved in, or are set to settle into the neighborhood.
At more than 60,000 square feet, the new Nike headquarters will be nearly double the size of the current one on Wardour Street in Soho. The company is due to move into the new building next year after building work is complete.
A real estate source has confirmed British media reports that the new location will be S1, a building in King’s Cross that is under construction, on the corner of Handyside Street and Canal Reach.
The London-based French architect Michel Mossessian, who worked on the NATO headquarters in Brussels and on the Marks & Spencer head offices in London’s Bayswater, is designing the Nike building.
He is also working on the adjacent building, which has already been pre-let to Google.
The Nike offices will be in close proximity to the recently opened retail space, Coal Drops Yard, and near King’s Cross and St. Pancras train stations. Central Saint Martins is also

Burberry Teams With U.K. Charity Smart Works to Dress Women in Need

GET SMART: Burberry is marking International Women’s Day by spreading the love, and the checks and the trench coats, to women in need of work wardrobes. Since 2013, the brand has been teaming with the British women’s charity Smart Works, which offers new, donated clothing and styling advice to women in need who are trying to get back into the workforce. Burberry has always donated clothing to Smart Works, but this year for the first time it invited seven women from the program into its London showrooms for a styling session and the opportunity to pick out their capsule work wardrobes.
The clients are at stage two of the Smart Works program, meaning they have secured employment and will need clothing to wear to their new jobs, ahead of their first pay checks. Half of Smart Works’ clients are from an ethnic minority, are long-term unemployed and have been unsuccessful with a large number of job applications. Smart Works said the majority of women it helps eventually secure full employment and that it aims to dress 3,500 women this year in the U.K.

U.K. Shoppers Shun Brick-and-Mortar Retailers on Boxing Day

LONDON — Selfridges and Harrods may have seen record numbers of shoppers gathering outside their stores ahead of the annual Boxing Day sales on Dec. 26, but many British brick-and-mortar retailers suffered on the first day of the post-Christmas sales season, due partly to the impact of Black Friday.
According to Springboard, which gathers footfall and consumer data, Britain’s High Street retailers witnessed “challenging trading” conditions on Dec. 26, with footfall decreasing 4.5 percent year-over-year. “This was one of the most challenging Boxing Days that brick-and-mortar stores have seen since Springboard first published Boxing Day activity in 2012,” the company said.
“This undoubtedly reflects the extent of discounting that has already occurred, particularly over Black Friday, and also the growth in online trade this year,” said Diane Wehrle, Insights Director at Springboard.
“In addition to this, Black Friday now rivals Boxing Day in terms of the volume of footfall generated and so its influence as a key trading day in the retail calendar has been diluted. The extent of discounting, together with the fact that stores still account for around 80 percent of total spend, and that activity in brick-and-mortar stores declined, suggests that sales will be lower this year on what was traditionally

Thom Sweeney Opens First Store Outside the U.K. in New York

NEW YORK — Thom Sweeney is making a statement with its first U.S. store.
The London-based brand that got its start as a bespoke maker in 2006, today will take the wraps off a 3,000-square-foot store at 362 West Broadway in SoHo — its first unit outside its home country.
The store stocks the brand’s ready-to-wear — which it started producing in 2013 — and has a large room dedicated to fittings for its signature made-to-measure and custom garments. It also features a special cutting room where a U.K.-based cutter will visit once a month to tend to clients along with a bar and lounge areas to encourage customers to stay a while.
“We think it stands out because there’s nothing else in the area like it,” said Thom Whiddett, who founded the brand with Luke Sweeney.
The two men met while they were both working for British tailor Timothy Everest — Whiddett as an apprentice and Sweeney as the head of the made-to-measure department. They decided to team to create the Thom Sweeney label, setting up shop in a small apartment in Mayfair, where they took private orders.
In 2009, they opened a bespoke studio in a former art gallery on Weighhouse Street, followed

Michelle Obama’s U.K. Tour Outfits Will Make You Fall in Love With Her Style All Over Again

Last week Michelle Obama, with daughters Malia and Sasha and mother Marian Robinson, set off on a goodwill cultural tour of England and Italy. On the six-day trip, which the First Lady used to promote the Let Girls Learn and Let’s Move initiatives, Obama wore European and American designers, reminding us of why we can’t get enough of her personal style. It was like 2008 all over again, when Obama first hit the scene and major fashion crushes ensued.

michelle-obama-preen
For the first stop on her global tour the First Lady arrived at Stanstead airport, wearing a yellow-and-blue lace Preen by Thornton Bregazzi dress. You can find a similar style on sale at avenue32.com for $ 960.

During the visit to London, Obama met with students and educators at the Mulberry School for Girls to discuss how the two countries are working together to enable access to education for young girls around the world. Her multicolor Mary Kantrantzou dress popped against the girls’ uniforms.

Obama wore U.K. designer Christopher Kane for a visit to 10 Downing Street. She teamed the black and floral embroidered dress with black Jimmy Choo kitten heels.

michelle-obama-duro-olowu
After her time in the U.K., Obama and family jetted off to Milan, where she discussed her Let’s Move initiative. She arrived in a fit-and-flare custom Duro Oluwu dress, with Sasha in a seersucker American Apparel dress, and Malia in heather gray.

michelle-obama-missoni
On her second day in Milan, Obama wore a Missoni knit dress as she toured the U.S. Pavilion at the Milan Expo. “It was a beautiful surprise,” Angela Missoni told WWD upon learning the FLOTUS chose the striped dress for the trip. “It’s a beautiful thing; it’s the first time she has been photographed wearing a dress from an Italian brand,” added Missoni.

michelle-obama-michale-kors
After receiving some flak for wearing only European designers on her tour, Obama chose a red shirtdress by American designer Michael Kors. The patriotic look, paired with simple black flats, was perfect for the baby shower Obama threw for moms-to-be who were stationed at the U.S. and NATO military base in Venice.

michelle-obama-florals
Later, Obama toured Venice, visiting the U.S. Pavillon of the Venice Biennale venue, wearing a V-neck sleeveless floral-print dress. She teamed the bold number with black gladiator sandals.

On the last day of the trip, Obama went with a kimono-sleeve dress and metallic sandals. Malia and Sasha chose wide-strap shift dresses, dainty necklaces, and simple flats.
