John Varvatos Enters Middle East With Dubai Mall Store

John Varvatos has made a move into the Middle East.
The New York-based men’s brand on Tuesday night opened a 2,937-square-foot store in the Fashion Avenue section of the Dubai Mall.
The store, which is the 31st retail unit for the label, is part of a geographical licensing deal with Casa Vida, which is part of Emaar Properties, a real estate firm that owns the Dubai Mall, according to Mark Brashear, chief executive officer of John Varvatos.
Under the terms of the deal, Brashear said, Casa Vida will open two additional stores in the Middle East over the next 18 months. The locations have not yet been identified, he said. “We’re looking at a couple of different options.”
Emaar operates over 6.7 million square feet of retail space in Dubai and also owns the Dubai Marina Mall, Souk Al Bahar and the Gold & Diamond Park, according to its web site.
The addition of Varvatos is part of the expansion of the fashion and lifestyle offerings at the Dubai Mall that involves adding another 1 million square feet and 150 new brands to the Fashion Avenue area of the mall. Varvatos Sticks to His DNA to Survive Fashion’s Vagaries

NEW YORK — The secret to success is to stay true to your own unique DNA and not be swayed by the whims of fashion.
That’s been the path John Varvatos has followed for nearly two decades since launching his eponymous brand in 1999.
In a conversation with Nick Sullivan, fashion director of Esquire, at the Fashion Group International’s Tastemakers breakfast at the Cosmopolitan Club here Tuesday morning, the designer said: “Brand DNA is everything to me personally. There’s fashion and then there’s style. Fashion is more immediate and of-the-moment, but style evolves and matures. I look at what we do as evolutionary, not revolutionary.”
In fashion, he said, many brands burst onto the scene, make a major splash and then burn out. But to survive and prosper in the long term, they need to stay true to their core mission and not alienate the customers who are drawn to their aesthetic.
“When you create product, hopefully you build a client base that has some loyalty,” he said. “My job is to continue to deliver interesting product that will compel them to spend their money.”

John Varvatos Men’s Fall 2018

John Varvatos went “rogue” for his fall show, eschewing the official fashion calendar to present on the eve of Grammys weekend in New York.
He selected an old synagogue on the Lower East Side and filled the front row with musicians and executives in town for the big event at Madison Square Garden: all three Jonas brothers, Thomas Rhett, Young Paris and Iggy Azalea among them.
It was ironic then that this season, Varvatos showed less of a rock ’n’ roll aesthetic than in the past. “I never think of us as rock ’n’ roll,” the designer said backstage before the show. “That’s other people’s perception. But it does have an edge to it.”
Instead, the designer set out to “change it up,” with a show he titled “John Varvatos 2.0” that “explored the notion of looking back to look forward,” according to the show notes.
He turned to his greatest hits over the past 17 years — textured fabrics, handknit sweaters, hand-finished leathers and pumped-up trainers — modernized in terms of silhouette and materials — to offer his take on the street “and how we’re living today.”

Jason Wu, John Varvatos, Isabel and Ruben Toledo to Salute FGI’s Rising Stars

NEW YORK — Designer John Varvatos is to deliver the keynote address at the Fashion Group International’s 21st Annual Rising Star Awards at Cipriani 42nd Street on Jan. 25.
The on-the-rise contenders also will get some words of wisdom from previous winners Jason Wu and the husband-and-wife team Isabel and Ruben Toledo. In addition to the eight categories, this year’s Hilldun Business Innovation Award will also be presented at the luncheon. Gary Wassner will do the honors for the factoring and finance company, which along with Hearst Magazines and Saks Fifth Avenue is among the sponsors of this year’s Rising Star Awards.
Having known what it’s like to be a winner (and once served as the event’s keynote speaker), Wu will give the Womenswear award. John Varvatos to Open Dallas Store at NorthPark Center

Texas is at the forefront of everyone’s minds right now and that includes John Varvatos.
The designer is still planning to open his 21st store in Dallas on Friday, but due to Hurricane Harvey, which has devastated Houston and other communities in the area, the new store as well as the Houston boutique will be donating 10 percent of their sales to the American Red Cross during the month of September.
The Dallas store, at the NorthPark Center, will be Varvatos’ 28th unit globally. The 2,800-square-foot unit will carry the brand’s full assortment of John Varvatos Collection, Star U.S.A. and Converse x John Varvatos apparel and accessories.
Not surprisingly, the store will have a rock ‘n’ roll theme. The designer has teamed with Rock Paper Photo to showcase a selection of images of rock legends including Led Zeppelin, the Rolling Stones and Bob Dylan as well as Texas natives Willie Nelson and Stevie Ray Vaughan.
The storefront features glazed brick and antique-finished zinc metal, the floors are rift and quartered wood and the walls are white brick and walnut. Displays include vintage tables, leather seats, custom benches and oversize mirrors as well as the brand’s signature “Edison Bulb” chandelier with more than 1,300 lights.

ABG Still Hopeful Varvatos Deal Can Be Struck

NEW YORK — Authentic Brands Group is “taking a breather” in its ongoing negotiations to buy the John Varvatos brand, but its chief executive officer is hopeful that a deal can eventually be completed.
Jamie Salter, ceo of ABG, told WWD, “We love the brand, we think it’s great. There were just some issues we couldn’t work through.”
Sources say that includes working with existing licensees and negotiating severance packages.
Although Varvatos is losing a reported $ 15 million a year, ABG operates under a licensing model and if it strips the overhead from the brand, it can be economically viable.
Varvatos, which has reported sales of $ 325 million at retail, can be profitable if operated under a “consolidation model,” Salter believes. But if a deal cannot immediately be worked out, he said ABG will work with Varvatos’ majority owner, Lion Capital, to expand the label, both in the U.S. and overseas.
Salter stressed that Lion is also a part owner of ABG, with a 21.5 percent stake, so “the seller is also the buyer. So they have to be happy with the deal we make.”
“If can get everything worked out, we’ll do the deal. If not, I’ll will help my partner make John Varvatos do well,”

Varvatos to Dress Hockey Greats for NHL All-Star Weekend

John Varvatos is a self-professed hockey junkie. One of his most cherished memories is when the Detroit Red Wings presented him with a hockey sweater on the ice last year after he opened a store in his hometown. “They welcomed me back and the coolest part is that they let me pick the jersey number, so I picked nine for Gordie Howe who was one of my heroes growing up,” he said.
Varvatos will show his love for hockey once again this weekend during the National Hockey League’s run-up to the All-Star Game in Los Angeles on Sunday.
Varvatos has collaborated with the league for TheNHL100, a black-tie gala Friday night that will honor the 100 greatest players of all time. Each of the players will receive a customized blazer created by Varvatos.
“About 70 of them are still living,” the designer said. So he had his Italian factory create made-to-measure black wool and mohair-blend jackets for each honoree that includes TheNHL100 logo on the breast pocket and the player’s name embroidered on the interior. “They’re really one of a kind,” he said.
The project comes at a time when Varvatos is rejiggering his business to adapt to the tough retail climate.

The designer hung hundreds of umbrellas from the ceiling and wrapped the walls and runway with stripes — a clear indicator of what was to come.
 
His spring collection centered around stripes, stripes and more stripes that he used in everything from skinny suits and duster coats to high-button boots. The stripes were offered in a variety of colors, ranging from summer whites and olives to eggplant.
 
“Everything is in such a solid mode today,” Varvatos said. “It’s been that way for too long. I’m trying to be adventurous and playful, everything doesn’t have to be so serious.”
 
While playful, the collection stayed true to the core of the Varvatos brand with its visible rock ‘n’ roll sensibility. This season, the designer was influenced by the British dandies who emigrated to the U.S. in the Seventies, such as Keith Richards, Jimmy Page and the members of Fleetwood Mac. They settled in Southern California and embraced the bohemian lifestyle, resulting in an “easing up” of their dandy roots to become more relaxed.
 
This translated into soft lambskin jackets with silk-linen

John Varvatos has chosen Southern California for the site of its latest store. The 3,500-square-foot store at the Fashion Valley Mall in San Diego marks the company’s 23rd store. 
“With its cool and laid-back attitude, San Diego is the perfect location for a John Varvatos store,” said designer John Varvatos. “The John Varvatos brand and aesthetic is very much in tune with the Southern California lifestyle, while offering a very strong and distinct masculine point of view — something that is unique in the area.”
The store offers a rock ‘n’ roll-inspired atmosphere and includes a glazed brick and antique-finished zinc metal window in front. In partnership with Rock Paper Photo, the walls are decorated with an assortment of music photographs inspired by the area and include portraits and live-performance shots of Led Zeppelin, Bruce Springsteen, The Mamas and the Papas and The Red Hot Chili Peppers. The floors are rift and the walls are white brick.

John Varvatos to Show at N.Y.: Men’s

NEW YORK — After seven years of showing his men’s collection in Milan, John Varvatos is coming back home.
The designer has revealed that he will show his spring 2016 collection in July at the inaugural New York Fashion Week: Men’s, the new stand-alone showcase for American men’s fashion created by the Council of Fashion Designers of America. Varvatos will close the event with a runway show on July 16. The designer’s last New York fashion show was in spring 2008.
“From the time I started my brand in 2000, the timing between fashion week and the men’s wear calendar was never truly aligned,” Varvatos said. “After eight years of showing in New York, I moved my show to Milan. We’ve shown there for the past seven years and it’s been a wonderful experience and a real boost for our international growth.”
