Première Vision Announces Partnership With Chambre Syndicale

MUTUAL SUPPORT: With Paris Fashion Week around the corner, trade show organizer Première Vision on Wednesday revealed a partnership with the Fédération de la Haute Couture et de la Mode. The overall aim of the “mutual support agreement,” it said, is to reinforce Paris’ status as the capital of fashion.
Concretely, young designers who are showcased in a new space dedicated to young talent on the Chambre Syndicale’s web site, as well as in the Designer’s Apartment showroom during the city’s fashion weeks, will get access to the Première Vision shows and resources, as well as mentoring.
Meanwhile, Pascal Morand, the federation’s executive president, will act as a consultant to the fair on one of his specialty subjects: fashion tech. Already this week, during the latest Paris edition of Première Vision, which wraps today, Morand participated in a roundtable titled “Imaginative Designs and Creation in Fashion Tech.”

Maria Cornejo to Serve as Brand Ambassador at Première Vision New York

CORNEJO’S CRYSTAL CLEAR VISION: Première Vision and the Council of Fashion Designers of America have crowned Maria Cornejo as the brand ambassador for next month’s Première Vision New York.
The designer is crafting a selection of exclusive designs for the show, putting to use textiles from the Swiss company Schoeller Textil. She said of the collaboration, “First, I am a total fabric nerd. I start always with fabric, draping. That’s the way we design the collection, designing the fabric. Secondly, the collection is going more and more toward sustainability.”
The show will run Jan. 16 and 17 at Pier 94 in New York.
The opportunity to work with Schoeller, the 2017 Fashion Smart Creation prize at the last PV Awards, was a selling point for Cornejo who also commended the company’s avant-garde reputation in this arena. The Swiss textiles maker was honored for its double-face fabric with a color-contrasting back in ECONYL yarn. “This was an amazing opportunity. There was no reservation for me to do it because it was also about spotlighting sustainability, showing that it doesn’t have to be boring,” she said. “It can be design. Steve Aoki Named Co-owner, Brand Collaborator for Vision Street Wear

Authentic Brands Group, which owns Vision Street Wear, has teamed up with Steve Aoki to bolster the line.
The DJ and producer will serve as brand collaborator and co-owner. Aoki said he would be involved in all areas of the business, including overall strategy, marketing and creatively developing each collection.
“This is a whole different world than doing an endorsement deal or a sponsorship deal and just rocking some T-shirts,” said Aoki. “Vision is a beloved brand to me. It’s a brand I grew up wearing and loving through my adolescence and now I am in this position to be a part of maintaining and growing the brand on all different verticals.”
Vision was founded 40 years ago by Brad Dorfman, who started out producing skateboards before introducing Vision Street Wear. Authentic Brands Group acquired Vision Street Wear, which works with partners in Japan and South Korea, in 2014.
Nick Woodhouse, president and chief marketing officer for Authentic Brands Group, believes Aoki, who played at his bachelor party, is the ideal person to build up the brand.
“I always knew what an amazing creative force Steve is,” said Woodhouse. “He produces terrific content, has an amazing social following and people are fanatical about him. He resonates with youth, he’s

Reed Krakoff’s Previews Tiffany & Co. Vision With Fall 2017 Campaign

Tiffany & Co. is undergoing a revamp. As has been well documented, chief artistic officer Reed Krakoff has been tasked with helping to get the American jeweler — which has struggled to lure young consumers — back on the growth track. Today, Krakoff and the Tiffany team will unveil a glimpse of his vision for the brand with the company’s fall 2017 advertising campaign. Or as a spokesperson described it, “Krakoff’s first creative expression for the house.” His first homeware and accessories designs for Tiffany are due to be unveiled this fall, while his first jewelry collections are not expected until 2018.
Talent featured in the campaign includes Zoë Kravitz, Janelle Monáe, St. Vincent, David Hallberg, Elle Fanning and Cameron Russell — all photographed by Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin.
Imagery is expected to run in the September issues of select print publications, as well as on Tiffany’s web site and social media channels.
Said Krakoff in a statement: The “‘There’s Only One’ [campaign] is a celebration of self-expression and embodies the spirit of Tiffany. The narrative is told through six individuals who are empowered, intelligent and unafraid to express themselves, each with their own unique talent and personal style.”
Krakoff told WWD in March

Blossom Première Vision Continues to Carve Its Place

PARIS — Blossom Première Vision is carving out a niche on the Paris trade fair circuit with its edited selection of weavers and leather manufacturers showing at the Palais Brongniart, the former stock exchange in central Paris, on July 4 and 5.
Now in its third edition, buyers praised the timing of the show, which allows them to begin to gather inspiration for pre-selections before the summer break, while exhibitors lauded the busiest edition yet.
“The dates are great because we can start work on pre-fall before the summer,” said Sarah Missakian, head of collections for Joseph. “The main PV show, in September, will already be too late for that,” she said.
“Right from the opening of the show we have felt a true energy, much more than at the first two editions,” said Eve Corrigan, president of Malhia Kent. “We’ve had back-to-back appointments, which wasn’t the case for the first two editions. Visitors are arriving with real creative ideas, and they are concentrated on what they want. The dates are good, given how the seasons are getting more and more advanced.”
International visitors accounted for 20 percent of traffic, compared with 17 percent a year ago. Italian visitors more than tripled, notably, accounting for

New West End Company Lays Out Its Vision for Oxford Street

MODERN VISION: The New West End Company, the U.K. firm that represents businesses across London’s West End area including Oxford, Regent and Bond Streets, has released a study that lays out its vision for the evolution of Oxford Street.
The study, called “The Future of the Oxford Street District,” was created in partnership with the public realm and urban design consultancy firm Publica, economic consultancy agency Volterra and property consultants Gerald Eve. It highlights a series of recommendations for the busy shopping thoroughfare which would improve and diversify the experience on offer, as well as create additional revenue streams.
Taking into account ongoing issues such as air quality and the need for traffic-free zones, the study recommends the creation of clear pedestrian and cycle routes that will enable visitors to safely move around, as well as public areas such as play spaces or open green spaces. The organization of more cultural or community events in the evening is also part of the recommendations, as an answer to the need to enhance the street’s evening economy.
The study takes into account the increased amount of visitors on the street, which is estimated to reach 260 million annually following the completion of the Elizabeth line,

Street Signs: Venus X Has a New Vision for Retail

Venus X is expanding her orbit.
The DJ, who founded the GHE20G0TH1K party series in 2009 and brought on with Hood by Air’s Shayne Oliver as a resident in 2010, has opened Planet X, a Chinatown store selling vintage and new products.
She tested out retail last year with a pop-up in the Bushwick section of Brooklyn, that was only supposed to last for a month, but remained open for six months. And shortly after packing up the temporary shop, she moved into a studio on the third floor of a Chinatown building at 99 Canal Street.
“It was so hard,” said the DJ, whose birth name is Jazmin Venus Soto. “But we learned how to do things like hire people, fire people and do inventory. Things are undoubtedly going to get messed up if you don’t have investors or a lot of money, but we all learned together. It was very ‘Teen Mom’ style.”
Soto is used to operating on the periphery and championing the marginalized. She’s created safe spaces for mostly young, LGBTQ people of color with her parties and recently launched a GHE20G0TH1K record label to promote artists that bigger labels don’t typically invest in. She even called out a powerful pop star,

Does Your Vision for Your Life Cause You to Look Up…or Down?

2017-02-08-1486579139-8155709-Lookup.jpg

“A rock pile ceases to be a rock pile the moment a man contemplates it, bearing within him the image of a Cathedral.” ~ Antone de Saint-Exupery

Several years ago, while in Barcelona, Spain, I had the opportunity to visit Catalan architect, Antonio Gaudi’s, one-of-a kind, “Sagrada Família.” While not officially a “cathedral” because it is not yet the seat of a Bishop, it is often thought of as such because it stands as high or higher than many ancient cathedrals. What is unique about the structure is that, while Gothic in design, it is also very “Art Nouveau” and unlike any other cathedral ever built; it is one-of-a-kind, in a class of its own. If you have ever seen pictures of it you’ll understand why I call it one of a kind. I encourage you to Google “Sagrada Família” and see for yourself–you’ll be rather stunned.

Gaudi designed and took over the construction of the project in 1883 and, the amazing thing is, to this day, it is still a work in progress. It stands higher than many skyscrapers; scaffolding and huge mechanical cranes loom in the skyline. The completion of the project is tentatively set for 2026, the centennial of Gaudi’s passing. It is said that he devoted the best of his years to the project, and at the time of his death at age 73 in 1926, less than a quarter of the project was complete. Can you imagine holding such a grand vision and not living to see it come to full fruition?

One-hundred and twenty-eight years after his vision was cast, I humbly stood at the base of this monolithic structure and gazed skyward wondering how much more had to be done to complete his vision. My mind raced back to the year 1883 when there was little more than barren land and rocks in that spot and I imagined him standing there, looking up, seeing his masterpiece in its completed form. That’s what visionaries do–they see their dream in its completed form long before it is realized in the material world. The transformation of concrete and rocks into a cathedral happened before Gaudi’s workers ever broke ground…and the fact that they are still working on the manifestation of it proves it was a very big vision.

Do you have a vision for your life and, if so, how big is it? Can you see yourself living that life now, even if the outer manifestation of it isn’t yet visible? While many say you have to see it to believe it, others are saying, you have to believe it to see it. Which are you? This is where and when the foundation for a life worth living is established. The practice is to contemplate your life as Gaudi contemplated his cathedral–as a completed idea in the creative Mind of a Universe that knows no limitations. In other words, the sky really is the limit; the only caveat is that this creative Mind is waiting for you to upload the design blueprints known as your belief system. What is your vision for your life? Are you looking up, or looking down? Be mindful of where your predominate thoughts go because, whether you are aware of it or not, that is the design plan you are uploading.

Clearly, Gaudi believed in his vision, so much so that it had no alternative but to become a reality, even years after his passing. That is a powerful vision when it takes on a life of its own. Turning a pile of rocks into a cathedral isn’t difficult once you have the vision–the Universe conspires to support you in your vision if you are willing to stand in it, own it and act on it. We are all visionaries–that is to say, we each hold in our mind a vision for our life; what it can or can’t be, might or might not be, or, will or won’t be. So the question really isn’t, do you have a vision for your life–if you are alive you have a vision. The real question is, what is your vision? Are you looking down at the rocks or up to the sky? Remember, the Universe is listening and it is already uploading your blueprints.

Peace, Dennis

Seattle Shakespeare Company’s The Comedy of Errors; A Fun Filled, Slapstick Vision That Entertains From Start to Finish

Seattle Shakespeare Company recently premiered The Comedy of Errors at the Leo K Theatre, and the show kept the audience in stitches from beginning to end. I am not much of a Shakespeare fan, and I usually study the plot beforehand just so I can follow what’s going on.
2015-09-21-1442820553-8654740-ComedyofErrors.jpg
I do enjoy the poetry of the verse, but without doing any pre-play study, I generally find the plots confusing. Not so with this production of The Comedy of Errors. It was brilliantly done in a way even I could understand what was happening without any knowledge beforehand.

And I now have some sense of what my father must have seen when he was a young boy and had the opportunity to watch the Marx Brothers trying out their movies in live theater before they were actually filmed. This version of The Comedy of Errors was like a Marx Brothers show, filled with physical comedy and so much slapstick that I almost expected someone to get a pie in the face. That didn’t happen, but characters were constantly barging in and out doors, running around every inch of the stage and bouncing off each other like ping pong balls.

All of this was occurring while the actors articulated every word of the play with eloquence and bravado. The only issue (for diehard Shakespeare fans) was that the audience’s laughing often went on for so long that it drowned out parts of the actors’ dialogue.

All in all, this production of The Comedy of Errors is a truly entertaining adaptation well worth seeing at least once. The Comedy of Errors continues through October 11 at the Leo K. Theatre at Seattle Repertory Theatre.

Police Eyewear by De Rigo Vision S1717M U28P Matte Blk Polarized Grn Sunglasses.True to its metropolitan image, the lifestyle brand POLICE presents contemporary vintage styles for its Eyewear 2013 Collection, made with sophisticated acetates and embellished with a metal bar running along the temples. Seemingly simple plastic and cello-metal frames conceal an internal acetate in new and original two-colour contrasting shades: burgundy, streaked havana, black other than refined ochre yellow and blue. The most fashionable and rock’n’roll soul of the collection is conveyed by metal and acetate styles combined with temples featuring the iconic, gothic P inserted into a sort of one-colour or contrasting-colour wedge and embellished with metal decorations. The design of temples is enhanced by elaborate and original treatments, such as the two, thin, perforated horizontal lines that give temples a light and ultra-performing elastic quality. Frames in the high-tech NXT polymer, a cutting-edge material, continue to be very popular, and are offered in a wide palette of bright and soft colours and minimum thicknesses. The Eyewear 2013 Collection also marks the debut of the women’s capsule collection that retains the same identifying features of the men’s collection from Police. Original design and attention to detail characterize rectangular-shaped styles, thanks to an interplay of colours conveyed by contrasting wedges on the temples matched with milled metal front pieces and streaked plastic in bright and sophisticated hues. A Eurovision Vision – Listen up, UK

2015-05-24-1432490257-851081-Eurovision.jpg

Criticism over the dearth of decent song entries from the UK gaped at us once too many times on Saturday night, as we stared back not so much in embarrassment as in shame. The appalling UK entry of this year’s Eurovision’s Song Contest was like telling the rest of Europe that it was a waste of time, for those performing and for those watching. Once again, a churlish but delusional belief that the UK is above the naffness of the contest means that the instigators of modern music were surpassed by their pupils, some of whom did rather well.

So a musically dominant Britain dribbled away more of its worldwide influence because of short-sightedness, and a large dose of snobbery. Can we genuinely dismiss an event watched by north of 200 million viewers, which in three hours produces a knock-on effect of cultural awareness and aspirational likability, and is one of the best projectors of soft power in a world of growing tensions over national differences?

Because something happened this weekend. The Eurovision Song Contest was totally cool. After Slovenia’s schlocky start, Israel broke the ice of terribleness with a Fiddler-on-the-Roof-ish rap and then.. .a sequence of great songs! Norway, Sweden, Belgium and Australia impressed with verve, originality and catchiness, lest we forget this is pop. And before you ask, “Australia!?”, the Ozzies were invited to celebrate 60 years of Eurovision, and got it right the very first time — a Bruno Mars-inspired (more than derived) upbeat, slick and professional dance number.

The chink of creative light was quickly extinguished by Greece, who didn’t get the memo, followed by Poland, Slovenia, Spain and Georgia, when never has so much make-up, sewing and demented eye movement led to nowhere. We endured expressions that looked like the singer had run out of loo paper and dancers with the grace of Grendel who dragged themselves over the floor like children greeting working parents at the front door.

Tuneless songs concluded with sighs of, “That’s three minutes we’ll never get back,” from Graham Norton, our beloved commentator. For the Italians it was a popular three tenors format with the usual theme — amore — though this time, “en te, per te. and con te”, from stereotypical handsomeness that if it came up to you in a bar, you’d laugh.

Yet effort, determination and hard work were everywhere, in contrast to British apathy. Even average songs were well-produced; Germany, Austria, as well as Latvia’s petite Egyptian-like figure with a big voice, entertained us. The Cypriot effort at pseudo sentimental — a lone poignant voice with strumming guitar — was really not bad, even if it fell apart with Hungary. Even Montenegro’s rump-pump-pumping away was, well, genuine.

Russia’s chorus, “We believe, we believe in… (“taking Ukraine“, we sang at the TV) … the dream” (isn’t that the same thing?), left the singer, Polina Gagarina, blathering tearfully after the performance. Putin has that effect, #Siberia #Gulag #polonium. When Russia was continually booed at its growing vote count, one of the presenters, a reminder of what defective robots could sound like, chirped that this was about the artists, not politics. Worth savouring the moment, however, when Conchita, last year’s bearded drag queen winner, clutched Polina’s hand in shared persecution solidarity. Worth imagining too the count of subcutaneous twitches on Putin’s botoxed facial exterior.

So, in the words of the well-meaning presenter, this was not about politics, when Belarus, Moldova, Azerbaijan, Latvia, Estonia and Armenia voted for the awakening volcano of a hitherto Russian motherland, and Serbia, Albania and the Czech Republic sought to assuage its looming presence.

Slovenia voted for Montenegro – “there’s a country doing much better than it should”, pointed out Graham. The UK gave their top three votes to Italy, Australia and Sweden, even Russia got six points. At least we don’t vote for our neighbours, maybe because we don’t have any.

And Germany’s “nul points”? A rejection of an artist this was not.

The Eurovision Song Contest, before trendy columnists lambast it to the depths of infernal bad taste, is about la-la love, solidarity, and diffusing the potential conflagration of tinder-dry nation states. There are far worse ways to entertain ourselves and benefit from the common interests of sharing the same continent, while being watched by yet another observer this year, as insignificant as a basking shark in a bowl of plankton, China.

Vision and Image in Early Christian England

Vision and Image in Early Christian England

Nothing in Anglo-Saxon pagan culture could withstand the impact of Christianity after the arrival of the disciples of Pope Gregory I in England. Professor Henderson’s book investigates the ways in which the English, in the two centuries following their conversion, expressed their new convictions about this world, and the next. It deals with the impact of books and travel on the Anglo-Saxons, discusses personal sanctity and the manipulation of belief by the state, and identifies the positive role of art in a society constantly afflicted by wars and epidemics. Henderson combines new fragmentary visual and literary evidence in this carefully illustrated book to bring out the peculiar character, both sophisticated and naive, of the new Christian civilisation which began to flourish and, to a surprising degree, recreate that of sixth-century Italy in seventh- and eighth-century England.

Imperfect Passage: A Sailing Story of Vision, Terror, and Redemption

Imperfect Passage: A Sailing Story of Vision, Terror, and Redemption

Michael Cosgrove had a beautiful family, a successful career, and a lovely Southern California home overlooking the Pacific Ocean. At the age sixty, he decided to leave that all behind to sail around the world. In spite of his romanticized vision of rugged individualism and salty tales to share with his grandchildren, Cosgrove quickly realizes that sailing around the world isnt going to be as easy as hed imagined. From a psychotic crewmate, sleep deprivation, and mental breakdowns, to stormy weather and hallucinations, Cosgrove rides the waves, holding on as best he can to his dream of doing something grand. Alone, and thousands of miles away from everyone and everything he loves, he is forced to ask himself one question: what in Gods name am I doing here? In his attempt to avoid the inevitable (growing old, weak, frail), Cosgrove runs amok. He breaks his budget to outfit the boat and then refuses to read the manuals. He enters unfamiliar harbors in the dead of night, hires a violent first mate, and sails headlong into ferocious storms. In the midst of his adventures, he longs for the simpler days when his four daughters were still children, when his first marriage was still intact, and when his future still seemed bright and expansive. Though driven by scenes of sheer terror, absurd folly, and deep inner searching, Cosgrove keeps his sense of humor throughout his harrowing journey. Imperfect Passage is the story of one mans perseverance against Father Time and Mother Nature, proving that with enough will, one can, in his or her own way, conquer the unconquerable.
