They Are Wearing: Almaty, Kazakhstan

ALMATY, Kazakhstan — Astana may be Kazakhstan’s capital, but talk to any local and they will point to Almaty as the real deal when it comes to culture and fashion. As the weather gets unexpectedly warm in mid-February, strolling through Arbat Street, a popular pedestrian strip in Almaty’s downtown, becomes much more interesting — Kazakhs, who typically favor black clothing, start adding a pop of color in their daily streetwear. For women, colorful coats help them stand out amid the slushy winter gloom. Some also choose a bright accent, like an orange strip in a navy coat or a peek of Millennial pink under a puffy parka. The men favor a more severe aesthetic, opting for streamlined, buttoned-up silhouette.
And of course, this being a post-Soviet country, fur coats for the older generation remain a common sight. As a representative of a mall said to WWD, “the people like to show off here.”

New Bling? Kylie Jenner Spotted Wearing Diamond Necklace After Birthday Celebration with Travis Scott

Kylie Jenner‘s 20th birthday celebrations so far have included a surprise party (sexy ice sculpture and all), a lavish string orchestra and a klassic Kylie lingerie photo shoot — and it’s safe to say it’s probably not over yet.

On Thursday evening, the Life of Kylie star enjoyed a low-key family celebration at home before hitting a movie theater with her beau Travis Scott for a double date with sister Khloé Kardashian and her boyfriend Tristan Thompson. The crew were joined by a few others pals, including Jenner’s bestie Jordyn Woods.

But what fans were quick to point out was the fact that Jenner was sporting some new bling — a very sparkly new diamond necklace, which E! News reports was a birthday gift from her 25-year-old rapper boyfriend. (According to the outlet, the orchestra was also planned by Scott.)

FROM COINAGE: The Lavish Lifestyle of the Kardashian Kids

On Thursday, Jenner took to her website and app to reflect on her birthday by sharing a list of “moments that made the last year of my life so great.”

In addition to hitting a few milestones in her professional life — the creation of The Kylie Shop and her booming cosmetics company — she also commemorated going blonde for New York Fashion Week, her 2017 calendar shoot with Terry Richardson (something she’d been wanting to do “forever”) and her Barbie-themed Flaunt magazine shoot.

And of course, she also expanded her family — her dog family, that is. Her two Italian greyhounds, Norman and Bambi, had surprise babies!

“My babies had babies!” she gushed. “Can’t you handle how cute little Harlie and Rosie are?!”

Photo Of Gal Gadot’s Husband Wearing ‘Wonderful’ Shirt Goes Viral

A post shared by Gal Gadot (@gal_gadot) on

Yaron Versano has a pretty super wife.

Gal Gadot told Glamour she met her businessman husband at a “very strange party in the Israeli desert.”

“It was all about yoga, chakras, and eating healthy — we didn’t exactly find ourselves there, but we found each other,” she said.

The couple was married in 2008 and now have two young kids. Gadot gave birth to their second child this year.

A post shared by Gal Gadot (@gal_gadot) on

The actress credits her husband with helping her stick to her goals of pursuing acting, and her perseverance obviously paid off. Gadot recently led “Wonder Woman” to thus far around $ 500 million worldwide, breathing new life into the DCEU.

You don’t need to tell her husband how great she is. Versano already knows, and he has the T-shirt to prove it.

In a new photo that’s going viral, Versano stands behind Gadot wearing a pretty “wonderful” shirt in honor of his Wonder Woman wife.

The photo received more than 1.2 million views in just its first 12 hours of being uploaded to Imgur, which makes sense. The image is so cute that the only explanation for it existing is that it was molded out of clay and brought to life by Zeus.

As BuzzFeed noted, the shirt is also on Amazon, for all the other husbands who have super wives (which is, you know, all the husbands).

But this shirt was clearly meant for one dude to wear, and it’ll hit you right in the feels.

This Woman Was Kicked Out Of A Mall For Wearing Shorts And A Tank Top

A woman in Grand Rapids, Mi. said she was recently kicked out of a shopping mall because another customer complained to mall security about her outfit.

The outfit in question? Shorts and a tank top.

Hannah Pewee posted a photo of her outfit on Facebook after being kicked out of Grand Rapids’ Woodland Mall on Saturday. In the photo, she wears what any woman might wear on a 90-degree day in June: a “Finding Nemo” tank top, jean shorts, and ballet flats.

“As many of you know, it is NINETY degrees outside today in West Michigan,” Pewee wrote in the Facebook post.

“So, of course, I decided to dress for the weather: shorts and a tank top. But apparently, how I was dressed … was too slutty for the public, as I was kicked out of the Woodland Mall today. Yup. Apparently some anonymous person reported me to MALL SECURITY for inappropriate dress and I was kicked out.”

Pewee’s post went viral over the weekend, with more than 4,000 likes and close to 9,000 shares. She said in the post that experience was so humiliating she “almost cried.”

“I am so angry right now I’m shaking,” she wrote. “I felt so embarrassed I almost cried. All because a stranger didn’t like how I dressed.

Pewee wrote two follow-up Facebook posts after the initial incident. First, she thanked the Facebook community for their support and kind words, and in the second, she confirmed that a manager from Woodland Mall called her to apologize.

“So I talked on the phone with the someone on the management team at Woodland and they apologized for what happened yesterday,” she wrote. “Apparently they’re going to revise their clothing policy on their website so it is clearer what is and isn’t acceptable. In addition, security will be discussing how to properly handle situations like this.”

The Woodland Mall website policy page currently has vague language about what clothing constitutes as “inappropriate.”

“Appropriate attire, including shirts and shoes, is required,” the policy guidelines read. “Clothing with inappropriate words, phrases or graphics is not permitted and is subject to mall management approval.”

HuffPost has reached out to both Pewee and representatives of Woodland Mall for comment and clarification, and will update this piece accordingly.

They Are Wearing: Memorial Day Weekend in Malibu and Montauk

Not even the weather could stop them. The New York crowd headed to Montauk over Memorial Day weekend in search of food, drink and relaxation, bringing along their best nautical looks and colorful sunglasses.
The Long Island hamlet saw denim jackets and pullovers, including a particularly on-theme one reading “weekend” with festive tassels hanging from each letter. Blue and white seemed to be the colors of choice, and weekenders paired blouses and sweaters with trendy denim styles.
Meanwhile on the West Coast, Memorial Day in Malibu also got off to a chilly start, relatively speaking, of course. The Malibu Country Mart was full of young families in the obligatory ath-leisure look and groups of girls stopping by for provisions or a bite on the way to the beach, dressed in jean shorts and tank tops.
At the Malibu Pier, where tony eatery Malibu Farms had a line out the door, the Beautiful People gathered to see and be seen. Not surprisingly, the Pier was also filled with bloggers taking their “Perfect Memorial Day Outfit” photo (cue the cabana stripes and white denim).
At the surf break across from the Country Mart, the waves were flat, so there weren’t as many people on the beach, just a few hopefuls in

SHOPPING DEALS UPDATE:

Wrongfully Incarcerated Artist Finished Grad School Wearing An Orange Jumpsuit

In 2012, artist Sherrill Roland received a call from a detective with a warrant for his arrest. Roland was an art student at the time, preparing to begin graduate school at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Roland, who claimed he had not committed any crime, was in utter disbelief.

He showed up for his trial in October 2013, five days after turning 29. Roland was accused of four misdemeanors and was found guilty on all counts. A D.C. judge sentenced him to 13 months in prison. (In an interview with HuffPost, he declined to give further information about the charges, saying he was not permitted to discuss the details.)

Roland spent just over 10 months in the Central Detention Facility, a space described by lawyers as a “human-rights disaster.” A 2015 report prepared by the Washington Lawyer’s Rights Committee for Civil Rights and Urban affairs described the prison’s condition as “alarming,” citing potentially dangerous structural problems like pests, mold and crumbling walls.

The account concluded that the “appalling conditions of confinement in D.C. prison facilities, especially in light of their disproportionate impact on African-Americans, are a key criminal justice and civil rights issue in Washington, DC.” Black men, including Roland, make up approximately half of the incarcerated population.

Roland was freed from prison in August 2014. One year later, however, new evidence emerged that ultimately proved his innocence. The judge who’d overseen his trial two years earlier threw out the convictions, and all records of his arrest and prosecution, at Roland’s request, were sealed. It was as if his entire incarceration had never happened ― to everyone except Roland himself and the people who love him.

Despite the fact that Roland’s wrongful conviction was expunged from his record, the experience left him shattered and confused. He wondered, “If I’m not the same person I was, who am I now? Who is the new me?” Ultimately, he decided to address this seemingly irresolvable question, of how to return back to art school after incarceration, through art.

In an ongoing social justice performance piece titled “The Jumpsuit Project,” Roland wears an orange jumpsuit to spark conversations about incarceration and its impact on individuals, families and communities. He started wearing the suit after returning to UNCG in 2016. Unsure of how to re-enter the academic safe space after serving prison time, he opted to wear his experience and his trauma on his sleeve.

It’s jarring to see a man in a orange jumpsuit roaming public spaces. Roland told HuffPost that confused bystanders occasionally asked him where his guard was. This level of discord is heightened on college campuses, known for their insularity. The same goes for the art institutions where Roland occasionally performs. When he enters a museum, he explained, “the vibe changes instantly.” The suit manipulates the space in which it exists, making room for new, often intimate, interactions between virtual strangers. Strangers approach Roland to discuss his experiences and share their own, chipping away at the estrangement that incarceration can bring out.

Roland graduated from UNCG last week with a Master’s degree, and he wore his jumpsuit to receive his diploma. This month, the artist will spend three days in front of the Brooklyn Public Library, performing “The Jumpsuit Project” for participants and passersby.

Read on for an interview with Roland about the origins of the piece:

How would you describe your art before you were incarcerated?

I had a design background. I was focused on making objects with my hands and also liked the quickness of sketching things out with digital software. When I was going into my grad school program in 2012, I was making work based off narratives from my home in Asheville, stories from my mother’s generation.

In 2012 you were issued a warrant for your arrest. What was your life in general like before this moment?

Going into grad school I was very focused. I thought I had everything figured out. I was going to get this MFA and go teach at a collegiate level. I planned to work on my own art during the summertime. I thought I had my path all laid out.

What was it like to receive a call from a detective requesting you turn yourself in?

I remember being at home ― it was the week before I was going to move to Greensboro. I was in my mother’s room, but she was away at the time, maybe at work or something. When I got the call I was completely shocked. It was crazy being alone and not being able to reach out to my mother when it happened.

What were your expectations after your court hearing? Do you remember how it felt when you were found guilty?

I had entirely expected to not be found guilty. I didn’t get any of my things in order to prepare me to go to jail. It was inconceivable. I couldn’t imagine it. I didn’t know how to plan for it. I didn’t know how it would go.

During the trial, everyone was trying to stay positive. I’ve never felt so blank-headed. I had no idea what was going on. I was so scared. It was hard to think about what could be taken away from me — everything I had accomplished, my family, my friends. Every day something new popped into my head, something I would potentially be giving up. I tried not to think about stuff like that.

During your time in jail, did you make art?

I came up with ideas for art projects I could do while I was in there, but my perspective on art shifted a bit. I lost the taste for making things for myself. I just couldn’t do it for some reason. I drew for other inmates ― portraits of their families that they could send as gifts. It’s hard to put a value on how much those cards meant to the people receiving them. We on the inside did not have anything to give. It is really powerful creating something for someone’s significant other or child, helping them get a gift from someone who can’t obtain one any other way. I was willing to make things as long as they meant something. They had a different type of value and weight.

Did you have any other outlets to communicate or express what you were going through?

Writing was my therapeutic release. My letters going out were the only things that were not looked at. Letters coming in were opened and read, our phone and video calls were recorded. I would write at least five pages for each letter. A lot of time I was on lockdown, so I couldn’t have phone conversations. I would end up just writing and writing. I had no indication I was going to get my freedom back. I was facing the fact that I had to deal with this wrongful conviction.

Were there other habits or tactics you developed in jail to make your time there more tolerable?

I tried to stay connected. The Washington Post circulated inside there. Somebody would find it and pass it around. I was the only one who looked at the Art and Style sections. I found ways like that, to get what I wanted. For example, most people hated vegetables but loved cake, but I hated the cake, so I traded for vegetables. I was always trying to trying to figure out ways I could succeed, ways to stay connected to who I was before I came in.

Tell me about when you first began thinking about “The Jumpsuit Project.”

After my conviction was overturned, I just sat at home for a very long time. I spent a long time waiting to see what I was going to do with my life. How am I going to accept this experience? I figured out how much it would cost to go around the world on a small budget. I dreamt of getting away. I had a very strong reaction against sitting still. I had been restricted in so many ways. I just wanted nobody to tell me what to do. I brought that idea and another idea to a professor of mine. The other idea, which was kind of unformed at the time, was “The Jumpsuit Project.”

What did the idea look like in its early stages?

It came to me in a dream. It was more of a question than an idea. I’m used to thinking as a designer, so when I see a project, I see an end product. But here, for the first time, there was no answer. It was uncharted territory for sure.

Sheryl Oring was my teacher at the time. I remember going to her house being like ― What would it be like if I wore an orange jumpsuit on campus? I was contemplating ― If I’m not the same person I was, who am I now? Who is the new me? I used to think I had a certain safety on campus. I was naive. I see the world totally different now. Who am I on this campus? I felt like I carried the burden of my experience anyway. What if I just wore an orange jumpsuit?

I had trouble figuring out how to explain it, but right away she said: “That’s it. You should definitely do that.” Immediately I tried to take it back. Sometimes you get an idea and you worry it might be too much for you. You’re not sure if you can handle it. I think the first thing I said was, “Well, I have to talk to my mother first.”

What was it like re-entering your college campus wearing an orange jumpsuit?

The very first day my teacher Sheryl walked with me to the library. It was the most terrifying thing I have ever done. I thought, I am about to step out there into this world and tell people I just went to jail. I had received my bill of innocence in 2015 and started the project in 2016, so it was all very fresh.

I remember this guy coming out of the library, checking me out, and literally walking around me. It didn’t even phase him. I have had all kinds of reactions ― people bolt the other way, people side step, give me space. Sometimes I’ve frightened people.

Do you follow specific guidelines while wearing the suit?

There are restrictions while in my suit. I treat the academic institution like a correctional institution, so I’m not allowed to stop outside and talk. I can only go to point A and B, one classroom to the next. If you want to talk to me you have to escort me; we can’t stop and chat. But once I’m in the library or in an enclosed space, I am free to talk. Whenever that happened, people started to gather around. Mostly, as quick as I can, I tell my story. I get a lot more hugs and support than negative looks. But it happens. There are some people sneaking by me and taking pictures, people laughing. Some people clearly have no idea know what I’m doing.

As far as the conversations go, are there certain ideas or talking points that come up again and again?

A lot of people come up and say, “My brother is going through the same thing,” or someone else in their lives. I had family members who had been locked up before, but they didn’t want to talk about it. And when I talk about my experience with my friends and family, they can’t totally get it because they weren’t there. Then I start think, Am I alone? But once I started talking, I met people who had so much to share. It opened up a whole other support system. People were willing to share so much, in fact they needed to share it, they just didn’t think they’d have an opportunity to, to talk to someone that got it.

What misconceptions did you have about incarceration before experiencing what it was like yourself?

When I went in, I was trying to separate myself. “I’m not supposed to be in here, I am innocent, I am not supposed to be with these other guys.” I ended up realizing that I was no different than anyone. They dehumanize you in there. No one has a name. Me saying I’m innocent — well, a lot of people think they’re innocent. The correctional officers didn’t have time to hear any of that.

I remember this old geezer in there, he got sentenced 20 to life for murder. He came to jail temporarily for a parole hearing and they housed him in with us. He said, “I know you say you’re innocent, but there has to be a reason why you are here. Open your eyes and see what’s here.” At first I was like, “What? That makes no sense!” But I started to take in all the people here. Everybody was going through the same things. Everyone was trying to deal with having their friends and families taken away. We were each other’s only support system.

I had this idea of what the word criminal meant. But when I was listening to this guy, who was in for murder, it was a big perspective change. Everyone in there is a human being. People have made mistakes and learned from them. When you have nothing, you need each other. One day, after I’d been wearing the same clothes for two months, some of the guys collectively got me fresh T-shirts and underwear and socks. Once I saw what goes on in jail, how we were treated, I will never forget. We need to have more conversations about it. I don’t believe anybody has to go through what I went through to get this perspective. I got my innocence restored. A lot of people don’t get that opportunity.

This weekend you will perform at the Brooklyn Public Library. Do you expect the performance to differ from the UNCG performance in any specific way?

I’ll alter the performance to fit a public setting. Every place has its own culture, so in a way, it’s up to the community that comes through the library. It can go a number of ways. I just hope it goes safely. I’m interested to hear the stories. It’s not always about jail itself, but about overcoming things. Sometimes it’s just about getting through a struggle.

How long do you plan to continue this project? Do you envision it changing shape in the future?

I want to take a break from the performance part and make tangible objects to go along with the performance. I have other things I want to get out. I don’t want to drop the opportunity for conversation the jumpsuit has provided. It offers a network for people to come together. I’m going to continue working on it, making it more of an entity as opposed to thinking about just me in a suit. A place where I can start organizing things. An opportunity to share.

This interview has been edited and condensed for clarity.

No, You’re Not Imagining Things: Every Celebrity Has Been Wearing This Brand

When Selena Gomez posted the first selfie that more or less confirmed her relationship with The Weeknd at Weekend 1 of Coachella, we didn’t immediately think, “Are they or aren’t they?” (Although, that question this pop up very shortly after.) Instead, we thought to ourselves: “Hm, where have we seen Selena’s dress before?” It took us a full second to realize where we’ve spotted the bright blue, floral-printed, square-necked slip dress with the matching bandana before: on nearly every fashionable Instagram star that’s been turned on to fellow cool girl Harley Viera Newton’s clothing line, HVN.

It hasn’t even been a year since the model/DJ launched her eponymous label last summer exclusively on MatchesFashion. But the line, which translates vintage-inspired dress silhouettes into contemporary printed-silk styles, has grown immensely, both in terms of where it’s stocked (HVN is now sold at Opening Ceremony, Net-a-Porter, Kirna Zabete, and more industry-favorite retailers) and who’s wearing it. Alexa Chung, Caroline Issa, and Natalie Joos were early supporters of the label — but as its selection of peppy patterns has multiplied, so has its fan base: Everyone from Jennifer Garner and Kelly Ripa to Sasha Lane and Gomez has recently have worn HVN; it’s an eclectic gang of stylish women who’ve all got an appreciation for nostalgic prints on flowy dresses. And we must say, the #OOTD envy is real.

“I’ve been really lucky to have some amazing women wearing my dresses,” Viera Newton told Refinery29. Margot Robbie was one of HVN’s earliest adopters, opting for the cherry-print Morgan dress; stylist Kate Young tipped her off to the brand. “This print definitely became a top seller, and is now a core pattern I have brought back for other seasons,” she told us of the fruit-themed pattern. As for the DJ-turned-designer’s “dream HVN girl,” that’d be none other than Rihanna: “I would love to see how she would style the dresses and make them her own.”

Now, the entry price on Newton’s line is pretty steep: Styles start at $ 445 and cap out at $ 755. So, if any of these dresses have piqued your interest, you may want to start saving your pennies now, before the warm weather settles in fully. But judging from the crop of celebrities that have worn HVN in the past few months (many of whom are repeat customers), these are the type of pieces you keep wearing again, and again, and again, and again, regardless of the season. Read on to see what all the hype is about.

Put down the fringe and pick up one of HVN’s peppy floral prints — it’s what Selena Gomez would do (and actually did do at Coachella this past weekend).

Gomez wears HVN's Falling Floral Nora Dress.

Baby, you’re a (HVN) firework: here’s Ashley Benson in the latest riff on the Morgan shirtdress.

HVN Morgan Firework-Print Short-Sleeved Dress, $ 625, available at MatchesFashion.

HVN’s cosmic prints have been a recent favorite among the brand’s biggest fans. Kate Mara is partial to the comet print on the Lily silhouette, a ’90s-esque slip with a belted waist.

HVN Lily Harley’s Comet-print silk slip dress, $ 445, available at MatchesFashion.

Once we all collectively decide to move on from millennial pink (it’ll happen one day, folks — we’ve got to brace ourselves for it), we have a feeling mint green will fill the pastel-hued void in our wardrobe. Kelly Ripa already found her match in this HVN shirtdress.

Ripa wears HVN's Morgan Vine dress.

Jennifer Garner is actually one of HVN’s biggest stans: She owns the Morgan in the Tarzan print (pictured), and has also been spotted multiple times in the blue, heart-printed Maria dress.

They Are Wearing: Galeries Lafayette’s “Africa Now” Festival

Sunday shoppers dressed in their finest to join in the celebration of Galeries Lafayette’s “Africa Now” festival, running through June 25, with a parade of African street style that started on the roof of the retailer’s flagship store in Paris and made its way down to the ground floor.
WWD’s They Are Wearing >>
Attendees rocked a mix of tailoring and denim, colorful prints and sleek urban looks, though it was hard to compete with the 100 participants in the parade, who were styled by Amah Ayivi, founder of the vintage store Marché Noir.
They included gospel singers in their Sunday best, a voodoo sorcerer and his disciples, and the Sapeurs – the tribe of elegant gentlemen whose snappy dress style was highlighted by Solange Knowles in the video for her 2012 track “Losing You.”
Side attractions included food trucks on Boulevard Haussmann, an exhibition of contemporary African art at the store’s Galerie des Galeries space, the screening of the documentary “Black Dandy, a Political Beauty,” a scarf-tying workshop and cooking classes.

We’re One Step Closer To Wearing Clothing Made From Poop

Man, you’re never going to believe what may soon be used to make clothes.

It’s a fabric made from cow poop.

On April 6, the H&M Foundation tapped five fashion innovators for its Global Change Award, a roughly $ 1.06 million prize celebrating sustainability through “game-changing ideas that can help reinvent the entire industry.”

One of those winners, Dutch artist and entrepreneur Jalila Essaidi, makes a textile jokingly referred to as “manure couture.” And yes, it’s exactly what you think it is.

Essaidi’s revolutionary fabric, Mestic, is made from the cellulose found in the dry components of cow manure. The wet materials in cow manure also contain acids necessary “to transform the cellulose into a new material,” she explained in a 2016 interview, meaning there’s even less waste of waste.

Essaidi explains on her website that the fabric serves as a way to reduce phosphate and nitrogen, two chemicals found in manure that harm the environment and, as of 2016, were in surplus in The Netherlands.

Refinery29 reports that the material itself does not smell like poop, and garments shown in a 2016 fashion show using Mestic really do look luxurious and wearable.

Essaidi is also the creator of Bulletproof Skin, “a project that achieved bioengineered bulletproof human skin reinforced with synthetic spider silk.”

In other words, she’s a total badass.

The prize money was awarded to “speed up the shift to a circular waste-free fashion industry,” according to a press release, and winners will participate in a year-long innovation accelerator to help them develop their ideas or products and connect them within the fashion industry.

While it remains to be seen how close to market Mestic will be after the year-long accelerator program, Essaidi’s intentions are clear. “I just want people to give a shit about the planet,” she said at the award ceremony in Stockholm Thursday.

While Mestic isn’t guaranteed to be sold at H&M or the company’s other retail businesses, a spokesperson told The Huffington Post that the point of the project is “to spur ideas that could have the potential to create a more sustainable fashion future,” adding, “Hopefully, they will be able to have an impact on the fashion industry as a whole.”

The future of fashion looks crappy, and we’re all for it.

Nicole Kidman Just Can’t Stop Wearing Animal Dresses

Remember when Nicole Kidman showed up to the SAG Awards with parrots on her shoulders and we couldn’t stop chirping about her high-risk, higher-reward look?

Well, it appears the “Big Little Lies” star may have heard our praise. Or she just really, really loves animals. Either way, she wore yet another creature-adorned gown to the Academy of Country Music Awards in Las Vegas Sunday night.

The intricately beaded Alexander McQueen dress is decorated with leaves, flowers and ― if you can spot them ― a whole bunch of animals. We spy an owl, a squirrel, deer and various other little creatures we’re still trying to identify.

It’s a Where’s Waldo of nature, if you will!

Kidman paired the wild look with a pair of stunning emerald earrings, and left her hands free enough of jewelry to clap normally this time around.

Weird clapping be damned, this gown gets a standing ovation from us.

Here’s A Toad Wearing A Top Hat, Because What Else Do You Have Going On?

Chris Newsome, a 43-year-old from Alabama, knows how to make an amphibian feel fancy.

This past summer, a toad took up residence in Newsome’s flowerbed and would visit his porch every night.

Not only did Newsome decide to give his guest a proper name — Mr. Toad — he also decided to start making hats for the little critter in the hopes of making another small fry happy.

“I made hats to cheer up a friend’s son after his pet toad died,” Newsome told The Huffington Post. “He asked if my porch toad was still around, so I put some pictures of the toad with hats on Facebook to make him laugh.”

Newsome fashioned the hats out of foam paper, which he said seemed like “toad-friendly material.”

They’re also pretty small — perfect for a toad, but quite silly-looking on Newsome’s dog, Daisy, who is wearing the hat below for scale:

Newsome also told HuffPost that it seemed Mr. Toad wasn’t bothered by modeling the hats, either.

“Even after many hats and pictures, he still returned,” Newsome said. “Either he liked the hats or he couldn’t be fazed.”

Recently, Newsome decided to post the pictures of Mr. Toad working it in his fab hats on Reddit and the pictures soon went viral, receiving more than 1.1 million views.

“Hopefully, it or another toad will visit once the weather warms up,” Newsome said.

Here’s hopping that happens!

How Many Fashion Robots Showed Up to the Met Gala Wearing Anna Wintour’s Bob? Let’s Investigate

It wasn’t too long ago that Taylor Swift showed up to the Grammy Awards with a new Anna Wintour-inspired bob — and at this year’s technology-themed Met Gala, she wasn’t the only one paying homage to the host of the night. Swift, Kylie Jenner, and Michelle Williams all hit the red carpet wearing hairstyles oh-so-similar to Wintour’s.

met gala bobsGetty (4)

Sure, Swift’s banged bob has transformed into a platinum, textured look since we first saw it just a few months ago — but with her sleek bangs still intact, her style continues to remain very much in line with Wintour’s signature hairstyle.

RELATED PHOTOS: 10 Stars Who’ve Rocked Anna Wintour’s Bob-and-Bangs Look

So after the singer had such success pulling it off, it’s no surprise that Kylie Jenner and Michelle Williams wanted to take the look for a spin as well. Williams showed up with a new haircut, which fell somewhere between Swift and Wintour’s looks. With short, choppy bangs and messy texture, she gave the style an edgy-yet-classy vibe that worked perfectly with her navy v-neck mini-dress and combat boots.

And Jenner showed up to her first Met Gala red carpet, revealing a sleek black bob similar to one we’ve seen before on the reality star — except this time, it’s shorter (!!) and parted perfectly to the side, instead of down the middle. However, she didn’t go full-Wintour: although the obligatory bangs were nowhere to be seen, that’s not to say she’ll never give it a try, as she recently snapped a similar banged bob on Instagram.

The Colors You’ll Be Wearing Next Spring: Rose Quartz, Buttercup, and More

Sometimes the world of fashion has a bit of a crystal ball element to it—hello, we’re all talking about spring 2016 now, before we’ve even started this fall! The color pros at Pantone traditionally reside as the seers who are providing our futuristic peek, releasing reports on what colors we’ll be seeing a lot of in the future. They just wrapped up their research and have issued the official word on what’s going to be hot for spring 2016.

pantone-colors-spring-2016-swatches-sized

All colors are not created equally either. Rose Quartz is the number one shade, with 22.55% of designers using it in their spring ’16 collections. Peach Echo, Serenity, Snorkel Blue, and Buttercup round out the rest of the top five. Per the experts, this means we’re all searching for some peace.

“Serenity is a calming color that plays to the whole idea that we know we’re still living in turbulent times,” Pantone Color Institute executive director Leatrice Eiseman told WWD. “Buttercup is all about sunlight, happiness and cheer. This one just speaks to give us a ray of sunshine, something to be hopeful about.”

MORE: The Best Colors to Wear on a Job Interview, First Date, and More

Eiseman is a friend of Glamour—she spent time talking color with us earlier this year, revealing the best shades to wear if you want to make new friends, feel less stressed, or win an argument (though the same colors can mean different things for men and women).

The spring shades revealed today were gathered by examining designers’ spring creations, but it’s a bit more intense when Pantone selects its top hue of the year. It was a deep red marsala for 2015, and we got the scoop on how that happened.

The spring 2016 runway schedule at Mercedes-Benz Prague Fashion Week was split between two highly contrasting locations — the city’s ZIBA Glass Experience Museum and its Skatepark — which inspired a notable divergence in the attending crowds’ attire. And Prague’s best-dressed residents kept it local when it came to accessories, adding interest to their outfits with pieces from such Czech designers as Ether, Antipearle and Jakub Polanka.

Victoria Beckham Reveals the Spice Girl Outfit She’s Never Wearing Again

There’s no denying that today’s Victoria Beckham is one very, very stylish lady. But the VB of days gone by? Not necessarily. When the designer was known as the Spice Girls‘ Posh, she had plenty of outfits she’d likely cringe at now, including one that she won’t be bringing in as design inspiration any time soon.

victoria-beckham-cfdas-2015

“I’m not sure that any of my particular looks from the ’90s will be inspiring. They will probably be horrifying [to] most of my team,” she told WWD. “I wouldn’t say my PVC catsuits would be reappearing, put it that way.”

There won’t be any reason to figure out what reformed Posh would wear today either, as Beckham squashes the forever-ongoing rumors of a reunion (sad!).

“I really support [them] in everything they do, and they’re so supportive of what I’m doing, but I couldn’t possibly do that,” she said of getting the band back together. “It was great when we did the Olympics, but I won’t be doing that anymore.”

Victoria performing in a catsuit, 1998

The proud mum also explained that for son Brooklyn, a burgeoning model, it’s about being so much more than a pretty face. “He’s just finished his GCSEs [U.K. high school exams], and so he’s done a couple of shoots. He loves photography and art, so for him when he does the occasional shoot, it’s more than just him having his picture taken.”

#ThePowerOfMakeup Proves There’s No Shame In Wearing Makeup

Shaming, in all its forms, is a terrible reality in our society. Anyone brave enough to share photos of themselves on the Internet is immediately subject to criticism, and you’d be hard-pressed to find a makeup tutorial on YouTube without at least a few hateful comments underneath.

Every so often, however, something awesome comes along in response as a result. #ThePowerOfMakeup hashtag, is one of those things.

It all started with a viral YouTube video by hair and makeup artist NikkieTutorials that sent both men and women to Instagram to post selfies with half a face of makeup on — not only to defend the decision to wear it, but to prove its ability to help people express themselves, and, consequently, shut down said shamers.

“I feel like lately makeup shaming has become a thing,” wrote NikkieTutorials. “It’s as if putting makeup on to have fun is a shame. Therefore, I thought it would be cool to show you the power of makeup. A transformation. Because makeup… is FUN!”

#thepowerofmakeup

A photo posted by Teacher Jasmine (@teacher_jasmine_walkswebs) on

The idea is to show people that the decision to wear or not wear makeup is, of course, up to each individual person themselves. “We wear makeup because it’s fun. Stop shaming women and men for the way they look, whether it be about their weight, the way they dress, or the amount of makeup they wear!” one participant wrote.

Preach.

The tranforming powers of makeup indeed!… now I’m posting this for varied reasons. Too often I see women beating themselves up about not having perfect brows/lips/cheeks/skin etc. Tons of folk who know me say I have perfect skin, which is baws. I just have decent makeup skills to cover my skin. Right now I’m having fairly bad break outs due to stress, bad diet & neglect. I have acne scarred skin, I have spots, massive pours, I have skin colour irregularities due to my acne, i have old piercing scars, i have a non existant top lip, hobbit nose, my brows are thinning & I have rediculous combination skin with random patches of dryness which makes applying foundation a nightmare at times. I’m not saying I’m the worst when it comes to bad skin & facial features but I’m just showing you what good makeup can achieve… Hell, a good skin care routine could fix most of my issues but at the end of the day this doesn’t fuss me… people get so embarassed & angry over bad skin & unloved facial parts but it’s truly daft to. I’m human, you’re human, give yourselves a break. I have no issues with my face being like this, i like my face as is… sure I’d love to not have as many break outs but it happens. Break outs can be unavoidable at times, just take care of yourself & your skin as best as you can & make the most of it. Screw the airbrushed models with no pores on their face, loads of factors attribute to better skin, so if you feel crappy about your skin then change your routine (or start one), eat better, hydrate yourself, invest in better products, persistance is key & if you’re worried it’s something more serious then go see a dermatologist who can diagnose & treat your problem. Don’t get jealous of others, be happy in your own skin, it’s the only one you have 🙂 ….Unless you’re Buffalo Bill… take his advice… IT PUTS THE LOTION ON ITS SKIN!!… if you want that glowing skin, it’s all about the moisturising! 😉 #skin #piercings #piercedgirls #gamergirls #septum #septumstacking #makeup #mua #motd #muotd #blenditbitch #expression #youtube #peabrain #cyber #alien #neon #breakout #life #beauty #thepowerofmakeup #transformation #transformationtuesday #health

Science Shows Wearing High Heels Makes Women Stronger (and Weaker)

High heels have been found to make women both stronger and weaker according to a new study published in The International Journal of Clinical Practice. The subjects, women studying to become flight attendants in South Korea, had heels as part of their classroom uniform, a decision made since the job they were training for would also require similar footwear. Scientists found that those enrolled in their second and third years of the program showed greater muscle strength in the area surrounding the ankle than the incoming freshmen. But oddly, the upward trend stopped abruptly when the women in their senior year of the program were examined.

04-bright-yellow-high-heels-plaid-skirt-street-style

Even though those were the women who had logged the most hours in their heels, they showed weakening of the same muscles that were becoming stronger in the sophomore and junior classmates. Senior, junior, and sophomore students were all found to have worse balance than the newbies.

The lead in the study, Hanseo University exercise physiology professor Jee Yong-Seok, explained that the ratio of strength between areas on the sides of the ankle to that in the front and the back was off in the heel-wearing women. Per The New York Times, that messes with stability and balance and leads to weakening of the same muscles that were initially becoming stronger due to the heels. In turn, ankle issues can cause injuries stemming from other muscle groups in the legs, including your hamstrings.

Happily for stiletto-lovers, the docs the Times chatted to didn’t suggest abandoning heels. Rather, they said to incorporate basic exercises like calf raises and heel drops (stand on the back edge of a stair and slowly let your heel lower dip down as far as it can). If you wear heels at the office, there’s also a benefit to be gained from slipping them off when you’re sitting at your desk since the position feet are put in while wearing a pair can affect the muscles, even when immobile.

The attention paid to Bryce Dallas Howard’s Jurassic World high-heel running scenes makes the study especially interesting. Though, to be fair, Howard said she prepped for all her action with a lot of calf raises.

What Are Those Aviator Sunglasses the Kardashians Are Always Wearing?

People who watch Keeping Up With the Kardashians with a fashion lens might have noticed something going on—nearly every single female has worn the same oversize pair of jet-black aviator sunglasses at some point.

kardashians-black-aviator-sunglasses-porsche

The clan hasn’t ever said exactly what pair they’re rocking, but they appear to be a Porsche style with removable lenses (specifically, P8478). The shades are available in a few sizes, but the oversize fit all the women rock likely means they have the largest option (69 millimeters).

khloe-kardashian-black-aviator-sunglasses-close-up

A zoomed-in shot of Khloe’s pair shows that they definitely have the small hooks that allow the lens to be exchanged for other colors. Compared with the Porsche P8478 style, available now, it’s kinda hard to argue they’re not the same.

Lauren Conrad on the Outfit She Really Regrets Wearing on Laguna Beach

lauren-conrad-pale-pink-outfit-style

Thinking back on your high school style is something most of us are joyfully free from really needing to do. Lauren Conrad? Not so much. Even if we all thought Laguna Beach was the pinnacle of style when the show was on, there’s a good chance any viewings now would ellicit some feelings of shock over what we actually thought was so fashionable. The same holds true for LC, who figured out which outfit she regrets the most from her teenage days.

“It’s me in those jeans that came right about the knee. The capri denim. Everybody else was wearing them, but [pictures are] a reminder they were a bummer,” she told MTV News.

Other fashion tidbits to note? She has two more Disney collabs on the calendar (she’s already done Cinderella and Minnie Mouse), and there’s a trendy summer sandal she can’t quite get behind: Birkenstocks.

“I can’t do it. I don’t feel pretty enough,” she said. “I can’t put something on that doesn’t make me happy. Some people wear them, and they look cool in them. I just look like a fool.”

Why You’ll Rarely See Reese Witherspoon Wearing All Black

With a career that’s included covering lots of Reese Witherspoon‘s outfit choices, I can say with some conviction that she’s a woman who likes her color. Her off-duty combos almost always feature a bright pop of something and her best red carpet moments have been when she’s in a crayon-color solid (warm yellow at the 2007 Golden Globes, hot pink at this year’s Met Gala). Turns out, Reese has a pretty straightforward explanation.

reese-witherspoon-hot-pink-dress-governors-awards-2014

“She said, ‘I’m Southern. I don’t wear all black,'” the star’s stylist, Leslie Fremar, recounted to WWD while explaining the process that goes into selecting her looks for red carpet season. “I said, ‘Just this once. It will make an impact,'” she said of convincing Reese to slip into the one-shoulder Saint Laurent dress she chose for Wild‘s premiere at the Toronto Film Festival. “Reese and I have completely opposite personal styles, but I appreciate her for knowing who she is and what works on her. I [just] put a slight push on her.”

reese-witherspoon-black-saint-laurent-dress-wild-premiere-2014

When Reese and Leslie decide on a look, the likelihood of it changing last-minute is fairly low (no Anne Hathaway-style dress drama for her). “Like a wedding, you don’t wake up that morning and go, ‘I feel like wearing something else,’ so you have to love what you’ve chosen.”

How often do you wear black? Do you wear the color head-to-toe a lot?

Bill Murray Introduced An NFL Game In London Wearing A Bear Hat

Bill Murray is the type of guy who could engage in any weird, random act of absurdity and we’d hardly question it. Why? Because he’s Bill Murray.

The “St. Vincent” actor introduced the Detroit Lions and Atlanta Falcons NFL game that took place on Sunday in London. He was wearing a bear hat, because why not. “If I were an Englishman and heard the Falcons were gonna fight the Lions in public, it would sound a little too cruel for me,” Murray says in the video. “I’d stay home and drink beer and tea like they do.”

Murray also announced another NFL game taking place in the U.S. between the Philadelphia Eagles and the Arizona Cardinals. Then the actor broke into a cardinal whistle and did a weird little dance. It’s bizarre, it’s hilarious and it’s definitely our second-favorite Murray commercial. (You know which one’s first.)

Walmart: Tracy Morgan Partly To Blame In Truck Accident Because He Wasn’t Wearing Seatbelt

DAVID PORTER, Associated Press

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — Actor-comedian Tracy Morgan and other people in a limousine struck from behind by a Wal-Mart truck on a highway in June are at least partly to blame for their injuries because they weren’t wearing seatbelts, the company said in a court filing Monday.

The filing was made in federal court in response to a lawsuit Morgan filed in July over the accident, which killed his friend James McNair, who was accompanying the former “Saturday Night Live” and “30 Rock” star back from a show in Delaware. Morgan spent several weeks in rehab with rib and leg injuries.

Wal-Mart Stores Inc., based in Bentonville, Arkansas, said in the filing that the passengers’ injuries were caused “in whole or in part” by their “failure to properly wear an appropriate available seatbelt restraint device,” which it said constitutes unreasonable conduct.

An attorney representing Morgan and the other plaintiffs called Wal-Mart’s contentions “surprising and appalling.”

“It’s disingenuous,” attorney Benedict Morelli said. “It’s not what they said they were going to do initially, which was take full responsibility. I’m very upset, not for myself but for the families I represent.”

The lawsuit seeks a jury trial and punitive and compensatory damages. It says the retail giant should have known that its truck driver had been awake for more than 24 hours before the crash and that his commute of 700 miles from his home in Georgia to work in Delaware was “unreasonable.” It also alleges the driver fell asleep at the wheel.

Wal-Mart spokeswoman Brooke Buchanan said in an email that the company “continues to stand willing to work with Mr. Morgan and the other plaintiffs to resolve this matter.”

Passengers Ardley Fuqua and Jeffrey Millea and Millea’s wife, Krista Millea, also are named as plaintiffs in the lawsuit. Krista Millea was not in the limousine when the crash occurred but is a plaintiff because she has a related loss-of-services lawsuit stemming from the crash.

Truck driver Kevin Roper, of Jonesboro, Georgia, pleaded not guilty to death by auto and assault by auto charges in state court. A criminal complaint also accuses him of not sleeping for more than 24 hours before the crash, a violation of New Jersey law.

A report by federal transportation safety investigators said Roper was driving 65 mph in the minute before he slammed into the limo van. The speed limit on that stretch of the New Jersey Turnpike is 55 mph and was lowered to 45 mph that night because of construction.

Roper had been on the job about 13 1/2 hours at the time of the crash, the report concluded. Federal rules permit truck drivers to work up to 14 hours a day, with a maximum of 11 hours behind the wheel.

‘Denim Day’ Reminds Us (Again) That Wearing Tight Pants Doesn’t Give Rapists An Excuse To Attack

Though some court rulings may imply otherwise, wearing tight clothing does not give rapists permission to assault.

Wednesday marks “Denim Day,” the awareness event when advocates and survivors speak up for the rights of people who have been sexually abused. The event dates back to 1999 when the Italian Supreme Court overturned a rape conviction because the victim wore fitted jeans at the time of the assault. The justices ruled that the victim must have helped her attacker remove her pants, thereby giving her consent.

The following day, female politicians came to work wearing jeans to stand in solidarity with the victim. Peace Over Violence then turned that powerful statement into Denim Day — the day advocates wear jeans and attend rallies to protest against misguided attitudes about sexual violence.

Supporters are getting involved in a number of ways.

University of California, Berkeley students, for example, are distributing information about the campaign and giving people a chance to express messages about sexual assault on T-shirts and jeans. The Guess Foundation committed to making a $ 100,000 donation to Peace Over Violence, and has more than 400 stores participating in Denim Day efforts. Assault survivors are also using the awareness day as an opportunity to speak out. Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti and Los Angeles Police Chief Charlie Beck unified with the cause by wearing blue jeans to a Denim Day event in L.A., CBS Los Angeles reported.

Over the years, some progress has been made with regard to how survivors of sexual assault are treated.

In 2008, the Italian court overturned its original ruling and stated that “jeans cannot be compared to any type of chastity belt,” the Telegraph reported at the time.

Still, advocates say that rape survivors have to bear far too much stigma.

According to the Rape Abuse & Incest National Network, 60 percent of sexual assault cases in the U.S. are not reported to the police.

Denim Day supporters hope that their efforts will empower abuse victims, break taboos and help debunk misconceptions.

The way our society thinks about rape and receives survivors is not only tragic, it’s dangerous,” Mariska Hargitay, actress and advocate, wrote on Denim Day two years ago. “Fearing that they won’t be believed, survivors are less likely to report their rapes, which means rapists stay out of jail, which means they are free to rape again.”

Feeling inspired? Find out how you can get involved with Denim Day.

10 Things You Need to Stop Wearing Immediately

Maggie Cassidy is a blogger for “Unwritten” and is a sophomore pursuing an English degree at the University of Maryland, College Park.

______

Out with the trashy and in with the classy. Since autumn is actually here, and winter will soon be approaching, it’s time to rid your wardrobe of things that have been worn too many times by too many girls. This list contains the 10 items that you should avoid wearing for the days when you strive to look your best.

1. Jeggings

Come on girls. I know you’re better than jeggings. At first they were innovative. You got to wear your pjs and jeans all at the same time. But you can spot a false pair of denims with a drawn-on zipper line and pockets from a mile away. Be better than jeggings, and put on some pants.

2. UGGs

I will defend this statement until the day I die: You ARE NOT fashionable if you wear these monstrosities. They were a bad idea in 2006, and they sure as hell aren’t a good idea now, especially when paired with shorts.

3. Longchamp Bag

For those of you who think nylon is a super chic material, I’m sorry to say it’s not. I get that these durable carry-alls fit everything you need for a full day of class, but too many girls walk around with a Longchamp in one hand and a skinny latte in the other.

4. Anything with a High-Low Hem

It was cool at first, but the Billy Ray Cyrus of fashion just has to stop. I can’t even go dress shopping without at least five of these “mullet dresses” on the rack. Either opt for a cocktail length, or a maxi dress — nothing in between.

5. Stacks of Friendship Bracelets

Are you a middle-schooler at sleep-away summer camp? Nope? Yeah, that’s what I thought. These rainbow yarn bracelets are juvenile, and they need to stop ruining your outfits. How about trying a watch or a cuff for grownup wrist wear?

6. Sperry Shoes

I’m guilty of owning these, but it’s time that I throw away my battered pair as well. First off, they’re guy shoes. So if you want to dress like your man, then go for it. But otherwise, save these dock siders for the Vineyard Vine wearing gentlemen.

7. Bandage Dresses

I want to wear the exact same thing as all the girls at the party — said no fashionable girl ever. Bandage dresses have become the uniform of party wear. There’s nothing unique to them; they simply look like a dip dyed ace bandage from a first aid kit that you decided to wrap around yourself. Yeah, it accentuates our curves, but a lot of them can accentuate the wrong curves.

8. Sweat Pants with Words on the Butt

Everyone had those neon-colored sweatpants in high school with the words “PINK” or “JUICY” slapped on the backside. The keywords in that sentence were: high school. Ladies, we’re basically one level away from the professional world, it’s time to let go and throw out the wardrobe from the days when our moms still drove us around.

9. North Face Fleeces

There’s a time and place for everything, but these fleeces should not be in your daily repertoire. Any outfit, no matter how chic it is, immediately becomes frumpy when you choose one of these as your outerwear. There are so many better options out there, like: leather jackets, peacoats, jean jackets or basically anything else. Save the North Face’s for when you’re running outside.

10. Sneaker Wedges

Please, please, please make these stop. Athletic wear and wedges just don’t mix. When are you ever running laps in a bar? Never. I know you think you look like bad gal RiRi when you wear these, but sadly, you don’t.

I apologize if this list offended anyone, but it’s for everyone’s own good. I’m just trying to look out for my fellow fashionistas. Comment below if you disagree with my list, or if you have any other items that people should just stop wearing!

Boy Reportedly Suspended For Wearing Vera Bradley Purse To School

Skylar Davis, a 13-year-old Kansas boy, was suspended from school. Depending on whose story you believe, it was either for cursing, or for “pursing.”

That is, carrying a purse with him to class.

Davis told KCTV5 that the purse, styled by Vera Bradley, helps him express himself. Besides, he says, “everyone else can wear [a purse], so I wear it as well.”

But the school’s assistant principal, who suspended Davis on Wednesday after he refused to remove the purse, doesn’t see it that way. KTNV reports he’d been wearing the bag since August, when the new school term started.

Leslie Willis, Davis’s mom, says she doesn’t understand why this is an issue, telling KCTV the student handbook makes no mention of purses. She added that she’s supportive of her son, and the choices he makes.

In March of 2012, a high schooler in Virginia faced a three-day suspension for refusing to take off a pair of high heels he was wearing. Administrators in that case argued his shoes were a disruption, while the student didn’t believe he was bothering anyone.

In Davis’s case, the rationale for his suspension seems a bit more murky. A request for comment from The Huffington Post was not immediately returned, though Superintendent Dan Blome later told KCTV5 junior high students have never been allowed to bring their bags into core classes.

KCTV5 also reports Davis returned to school Thursday afternoon, and that in a written statement to the station, Willis claims administrators are now saying the teenager was suspended for “foul language,” not “refusing to take off his purse.”
