Victoria Beckham, Alexa Chung, Bobby Abley Join London Fashion Week Schedule

LONDON — Victoria Beckham is just one of the new names to join the London Fashion Week women’s calendar in September, according to the preliminary LFW schedule, which is now on the British Fashion Council’s web site.
Other newcomers include Alexa Chung, who has been eschewing the traditional show schedule in favor of themed events hosted around the world and a see-now-buy-now format, and men’s wear talents Bobby Abley and Kiko Kostadinov.
Burberry will host its seasonal show on Sept. 17 and though not new to the lineup, all eyes will be on the brand this season since this will be the first show from new creative director Riccardo Tisci.
Beckham will host her spring 2019 show in London on the morning of Sept. 16 and mark the 10-year anniversary of her business. The company also said that more events, exclusive pieces and other activations will take place throughout the year to celebrate the brand’s decade.
The contemporary label Rixo London, best known for its mid-priced printed dresses, will be hosting a see-now-buy-now presentation during the five-day event, which runs from September 14 to 18, while emerging men’s wear labels Bobby Abley and Kiko Kostadinov are also taking the September plunge as they dip

Christian Siriano on Emmys, Inclusivity and New York Fashion Week

Christian Siriano made a summer stop in Los Angeles this week, just in time for Thursday’s Emmy nominations announcement. That night, he hosted a dinner at Chateau Marmont with 11 Honoré, the size-inclusive luxury e-commerce site cofounded by Patrick Herning and Kathryn Retzer. Said Herning, “Christian was one of the first designers we launched with and he’s still one of our best-selling designers a year later. He’s really on board with changing the game.” The designer’s inclusive approach to retail and celebrity dressing has heightened his profile, but he remains as down-to-earth and energetic as ever. “I’m always up sending e-mails in the middle of the night, because otherwise, what are you going to do? We’re there for our customers.”
WWD: When was the last time you were in L.A.?
Christian Siriano: I came for my book launch last November and for a few quick Oscar fittings in January. We dressed almost 17 people and I barely was here. I don’t know how we did that; it was crazy.
WWD: With Emmy nominations on Thursday, has your phone and e-mail already been blowing up?
C.S.: We already got a couple of e-mails, which I love. Judith Light and I were texting and Leslie Jones

Industry Adapts to Shifting Milan Men’s Fashion Week

MILAN — A shrinking show calendar, currency volatility and macro economic issues at the tail end of a period of local political instability following Italy’s general elections were only some of the concerns weighing on executives on the eve of Milan Men’s Fashion Week.
But on the upside, business is chugging along steadily. Revenues generated by the fashion sector last year grew 2.5 percent to 64.8 billion euros, and exports rose 4.3 percent to 50 billion euros, according to Camera Nazionale della Moda Italiana’s Fashion Economic Trends report issued in May. The first half is expected to show 1.5 percent growth in sales compared with the same period last year. Last week, the updated Altagamma Worldwide Market Monitor and Bain & Co. study painted a pretty picture, as the global personal luxury goods industry is expected to grow 6 to 8 percent at constant exchange compared with the 5 percent growth forecast last October for 2018.
“Everyone is hoping to see a modicum of stability, which would allow us to set goals in the medium-term, invest in three-year plans without this sense of anxiety hovering over us,” said Paolo Roviera, chief executive officer of Corneliani. LES HOMMES URBAN

Les Hommes is expanding into streetwear with the launch of the Les Hommes Urban line, which is available for sale at the brand’s Milan showroom during fashion week.
“The LHU collection was born out of a creative and a practical idea. When we go back to the very early days of Les Hommes, there were a lot of urban influences in the collection, such as graffiti and workwear. It is a creative playground that we always embraced and are very fascinated by,” said Tom Notte, who designs the collection with longtime business partner Bart Vandebosch.
“From the practical point of view, we were pushed to launch LHU by the feedback we were getting from our own stores. In Antwerp, where the first store was founded, we were confronted with a demand from young guys who were very interested in our collection, but because of its positioning, it was out of reach for them. We created a streetwear brand that carries the originality of a designer brand since many pieces are treated and designed with the same care as we do for Les Hommes.”

EXCLUSIVE: VFiles Announces Runway 10 Show, Mentor Committee for New York Fashion Week

It’s back to the runway for VFiles, which will be holding its 10th show on Sept. 5.
Last season, instead of the traditional runway/performance extravaganza the company hosts, it staged “Be Heart, Make Noise,” an immersive music and fashion event done in collaboration with Adidas Originals. In the past, runway shows included celebrity guest judges such as Khloé Kardashian and Young Thug. For VFiles Runway 10, the brand is bringing its event a bit more down to earth by, for the first time, appointing a committee of eight industry leaders that will select and mentor show contestants throughout their journey to New York Fashion Week. After that, the VFiles team will provide mentorship for the following season. The pivot brings a slightly more serious — yet welcome — tone to the show that has otherwise been high on experimental fashion.
The mentor committee includes: Julie Anne Quay, founder and chief executive officer of VFiles; Laura Brown, editor in chief of InStyle magazine; Rio Uribe, designer and founder of Gypsy Sport; Candy Pratts Price, fashion consultant; Anna Trevelyan, stylist and creative consultant; Erin Magee, founder of MadeMe; Paul Cupo, designer, and James Costas-Michael, merchandise director of VFiles.
Also new for the season;

Postapocalyptic Theme Ran Through 5,000 Works at London’s Graduate Fashion Week

LONDON — This year’s Graduate Fashion Week was one of the largest events to take place in size and ambitions with more than 5,000 pieces of work on display from 500 students — the majority of whom hailed from outside the U.K.
Graduate Fashion Week is a charity that was founded in 1991 and aims to bring together British and international fashion universities and elevate the creative industries.
“We’ve had more visitors than we’ve ever had. We’ve got 37 U.K. universities and 51 international ones, so we have managed to create a global stage for everyone,” said Mark Newton-Jones, chairman of Graduate Fashion Week.
“We’re trying to bridge the gap between graduates and employers, we’ve introduced a protégé program so everyone up for an award tonight will be mentored by a designer or leader in the industry,” he said.
Hosted in east London’s Old Truman Brewery, the awards ceremony opened with a personal message from British Prime Minister Theresa May. “I am very proud of the U.K.’s fashion industry, some of the most iconic brands and biggest names in the business hail from the U.K. Graduate Fashion Week plays such an important role in the process of nurturing the very best talents.”

Exclusive: Gucci to Join Paris Fashion Week This Fall

MILAN — Continuing to speak with a French accent this year, Gucci’s Alessandro Michele is joining Paris Fashion Week this fall, WWD has learned.
Decamping from Milan for one season, the Italian luxury brand is to parade its spring-summer 2019 collection in the French capital on Sept. 24. The show marks the crescendo of a three-part homage to France conceived by Michele, creative director.
“Gucci is a global brand with deep and vibrant Italian roots and a visionary French shareholder, Kering,” said Marco Bizzarri, president and chief executive officer of Gucci. “When Alessandro told me of his desire to present the new collection in Paris — continuing the French-inspired narrative — I thought it was a perfect way to continue the creative homage to France.”
Bizzarri underscored that the show date marks the “transition day between Milan and Paris Fashion Weeks to avoid impacting schedules. We will then look forward to returning to Milan in February 2019.”
While foregoing a show in Milan for the season, the company is planning a special event to be held at the Gucci Hub on Wednesday, Sept. 19, the second day of Milan Women’s Fashion Week, scheduled to run Sept. 18-24. Details about the event are being kept under wraps.

Arab Fashion Council Plots Arab Fashion Week Riyadh, Partners With British Fashion Council

LONDON — The Arab Fashion Council is starting to lay the foundations for the development of a sustainable infrastructure across the Arab world, with a strategic partnership with the British Fashion Council and the debut of the first Arab Fashion Week in Riyadh.
The nonprofit organization, which represents 22 countries across the Arab world and has recently set up a regional office in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, is aiming to use the event as a platform to support local talent, as well as international names looking to enter the Arab market.
“The history and trajectory of the BFC goes hand in hand with what we are trying to achieve: nurturing young talent and adopting an international vision,” said Princess Noura Bint Faisal Al Saud, the organization’s honorary president.
In turn, the AFC will work toward providing opportunities for London-based designers to tap into the Arab market.
Jacob Abrian, the founder and chief executive officer of the AFC, pointed to the fact that their efforts are aligned with the government’s broader vision to diversify the economy of Saudi Arabia and create opportunities for its increasingly young generation — 70 percent of the population being under 30. “Most Arab countries are looking to diversify; Abu Dhabi, for example, announced that

Central Saint Martins’ MA Students Present Graduate Collections at London Fashion Week

Student graduate shows can be hit or miss but the 19 MA students from Central Saint Martins presented an exciting mix that ran the sartorial gamut from extreme silhouettes and innovative textiles to sleek tailoring in more traditional fabrications.
Among the highlights: Liam Johnson, whose sculptural silhouettes opened the show; Elise Perrotta’s all cream collection featuring wardrobe staples in textural knits, and women’s wear designer Edwin Mohney, who closed the show with a provocative collection that included conceptual pieces made using inflatables wrapped in packing tape.
As in past seasons, craftsmanship in the men’s wear stood out. Particularly noteworthy was Olaf Tavares Vieira, whose draped men’s wear collection was awarded the L’Oreal Professional Creative Award. Inspired by utilitarianism and the stomach as the center of the body, his lineup included fluid ankle-grazing coats, along with sweaters with cutouts in the back and slouchy trousers enveloping the torso that had a monkish appeal.
“I like clothes that are close on the neck and belly and on the ankle,” Vieira explained. “It gives me a kind of strength, even if the clothes are soft.”
He shared the prize with women’s wear designer Rebecca Jeffs, whose tactile collection was a clever play on famous sayings such as

Background: Chavarria, a Mexican-American, grew up in Huron, Calif., a small town near Fresno, and held design stints at Ralph Lauren and American Eagle Outfitters before starting Palmer Trading Co., his Made in the U.S. men’s wear line that leaned heavily toward workwear and was snapped up by Japanese retailers. Now he’s exclusively focused on his namesake assortment of men’s wear.

Name: Emily Adams Bode
Background: Bode was born and raised in Atlanta, and spent her summers in New England, where she frequented antique shops and shows with her mother. Through that she was introduced to age-old techniques and fabrications. “I have always been drawn to hand-work, craft and labors of love,” the designer said. “The stories told through craft and the sense of the hand, the individual-maker, drew me to them.” Bode eventually moved to New York, where she graduated from Parsons

Pantone Ranks Leading 10 Fall Colors for a Pre-Fashion Week Forecast

The global psyche is increasingly all about inclusivity, so why not for fall colors, too?
That kind of all-are-welcome approach is central to Pantone’s Fashion Color Trend Fall 2018 Report, released by the X-Rite-owned Pantone LLC. Building off its gender-neutral take on fashion colors, the Pantone Color Institute has culled a Top 10 list that plays up seasonless shades, including a few that are far from wintry. Designers and consumers are pedaling away from cyclical trends in favor of more self-expressive, nontraditional choices, according to Pantone Color Institute’s executive director Leatrice Eiseman.
Leading this fall’s Top 10 list are Red Pear, Valiant Poppy and Nebulas Blue, followed by Ceylon Yellow, Martini Olive, Russet Orange and Ultra Violet. Ranking eighth through tenth are Crocus Petal, Limelight and Quetzal Green. Save for the autumnal-inspired Red Pear and Russet Orange, most of these shades don’t conjure up images of afternoons raking leaves in the yard.
From Eiseman’s authoritative viewpoint, people are more willing to turn over a new leaf when it comes to color. While colorists, designers and editors might be aware of how subtle nuances in color can be found by using different fabrics and textures, the average consumer is now becoming more fascinated by

How to See the ‘Super Blue Blood Moon,’ Appearing This Week for First Time in Over 150 Years

Keep your eyes on the skies this week: a lunar trifecta that hasn’t occurred since 1866 will put on a pre-dawn show.

In the early morning hours of Jan. 31, a total lunar eclipse will coincide with a blue moon and a supermoon, known as a “super blue blood moon.”

Here’s everything you need to know about this phenomenon and how to watch it unfold.

What exactly is a ‘super blue blood moon?’

This rare celestial event is made up of three coinciding occurrences. A supermoon is when the moon is closer to Earth in its orbit, therefore appearing bigger and brighter  – NASA predicts Wednesday’s moon will appear 14% brighter than usual. A blue moon is the second full moon in a calendar month, and the first took place on Jan. 1. Finally, a lunar eclipse occurs when a full moon passes into Earth’s shadow – and the “blood” part of the name comes from the faint red sunbeams that peek out around the edges of the Earth, giving the moon a reddish color.

How rare is this?

While none of these three lunar events are uncommon, they haven’t all coincided in 152 years, according to The Guardian.

When and where is it happening?

NASA says Jan. 31’s super blue blood moon will begin at 5:51 a.m. ET, so set your alarms.

“Your best opportunity if you live in the East is to head outside about 6:45 a.m. and get to a high place to watch the start of the eclipse—make sure you have a clear line of sight to the horizon in the west-northwest, opposite from where the Sun will rise,” Gordon Johnston, program executive and lunar blogger at NASA Headquarters, advises.

Those in the Central time zone will have an even better view, with the best time to be on the lookout between 6:15 and 6:30 a.m. CT. The show will start at 4:48 a.m. for those is the Mountain time zone, with the peak at 6:30 a.m., while those on the West coast can start watching at 3:48 a.m. PT. The best viewing will be between about 5:00 and 6:00 a.m. local time, and the totality phase ends about 6:05 a.m.

Stargazers living in Alaska or Hawaii will be able to see the entire eclipse before sunrise. Those in the Middle East, Asia, eastern Russia, Australia and New Zealand will see the “super blue blood moon” during moonrise on the evening of Jan. 31.

Where can I watch online?

If you don’t feel like rolling out of bed, NASA will be livestreaming the event at NASA.gov/Live starting at 5:30 a.m. ET.

Paris Men’s Week: Great Expectations

PARIS — As the coed trend continues to suck puff out of men’s weeks’ sails, Paris, as the proverbial capital of fashion, is still showing resistance.
The palpable buzz around the week, which opened Tuesday, bodes well for the city’s returning confidence. The greater Paris region in 2017 saw a record 23.1 million hotel arrivals, according to the Paris Convention and Visitors Bureau, coming off a gloomy 2016 that was impacted by a spate of terrorist attacks.
Against a baseline of men’s wear stalwarts like Dries Van Noten, Comme des Garçons, Thom Browne and Rick Owens, Vetements’ off-calendar show — after having staged a “No-Show” event in a Paris car park last June — has added fizz to this season, while excitement is also mounting around the debut Maison Margiela men’s collection under the creative direction of John Galliano, both showing on Friday. It’s been a step-by-step process for the designer.
“The strategy of the maison is rooted into a single unified and consistent message, with John Galliano’s vision at its core. Allowing this creative vision to develop and expand consistently throughout the house first required a thorough exploration and redefinition of the brand codes,” said Riccardo Bellini, chief executive officer of Maison

Ones to Watch: Paris Men’s Fashion Week

PARIS — From the debut collection of design-led sustainable men’s brand, Phipps, to Nïuku’s modern-day tribute to men’s tailoring of yore, here are some of the new talents to look out for at Paris Men’s Fashion Week, which kicks into high gear today.

“It’s about acknowledging that we’re all people, we’re in this together,” said Spencer Phipps, founder of Phipps, a new men’s wear line mixing sustainability and style that is due to launch on Jan. 20 during Paris Men’s Week. (The venue is still to be confirmed.)
The Paris-based designer, who is from San Francisco, cut his teeth in the men’s studio of Marc Jacobs in New York before working for Dries Van Noten in Antwerp for three years. After leaving Van Noten, he spent eight months researching manufacturers and materials. “I did my graduate collection in sustainability in 2008 at Parsons and it was like a joke. I ended up finding one manufacturer in New England that was basically some hippy commune that made hemp and linen and one cotton flannel,” he said.
So Phipps opted to work with manufacturers in Portugal, “a country that is basically certified [for sustainability].”
“After their economy crashed, at the same time as everyone

London Fashion Week Men’s Fall 2018: Ones to Watch

John Alexander Skelton
Born and raised in York, John Alexander Skelton received his master’s in fashion men’s wear at Central Saint Martins and took on internships at E. Tautz and Patrik Ervell before launching his label last year. Selected by Giles Deacon, Skelton is a recipient of the Sarabande scholarship, an initiative from The Lee Alexander McQueen Foundation that aids young designers. He is working out of a studio at Sarabande in east London.
Sustainability is a key theme for Skelton, who incorporates repurposed materials into his ranges and takes a DIY approach to his work. He has a loom in his studio and many of his fabrics are handwoven, as is much of his knitwear. “Everything I dye is also done by hand using natural dye. The handcrafted element is my signature, in a way,” said the designer.
For fall 2018, Skelton has been working with mills in Ireland, mixing British wool and Irish linen.
“I have been doing a lot of hand weaving, as well, on the loom. I have also done a few natural dyes this time, one using an ancient European dye, the European version of indigo, called woad,” he said.
Skelton’s main focus has always been on the process and

London Fashion Week Men’s Fall 2018: Inspirations

From skiing to winning the lottery, London men’s wear designers looked to a wide range of subjects for inspiration for their fall collections. Here, some of the topics that sparked their creativity ahead of the shows, which begin on Saturday.
“This season we celebrate the 70th  anniversary of the Trialmaster jacket, which gave me an opportunity to revisit our British roots and present our Made in U.K. collection. Looking through our Trialmaster history led me to explore English youth subcultures and how our jackets have been adopted and customized since the Fifties. The iconic silhouettes from this era including the field, parka and biker jackets have been updated this season with added functionality and modern fabrications. The hero piece of the collection is the anniversary Trialmaster, which is entirely manufactured in the U.K., in a new tumbled coated cotton and reflective tape with badges, celebrating our heritage.” — Delphine Ninous, creative director, Belstaff
“A deep dive into the big blue. The collection stands as a creative call to arms and focuses on responsible design and sourcing to protect both planet and wearer.” — Christopher Raeburn
“It’s about escaping life, going to Noel’s house party and the adventures of kids’ coloring books.” — Liam Hodges

Milan Men’s Fashion Week Reflects Industry Changes

MILAN — The latest Milan Men’s Fashion Week schedule reflects the changes in the men’s wear industry, according to Carlo Capasa, president of Italy’s Camera Nazionale della Moda.
“The concept of how men’s wear is shown has changed and so has the concept of the calendar — everything is combined together and there is more and more cross-pollination,” Capasa contended. “The shift is real.”
The shows will start on Jan. 12 with the Ermenegildo Zegna evening show and will end on Jan. 15, anchored by the Giorgio Armani and Fendi shows. Overall, the runway shows will be 31 in total.
Capasa said the evolution has led the association to create a new format for the calendar, which now “combines presentations and shows in a single tale that each brand offers in line with its own aesthetic and vision.”
The first chapter of coed shows, as Capasa called it, will take place in January, followed by the second chapter in February. Next month these will include Diesel Black Gold; the Italian brand Isabel Benenato founded by Isabel Vitiello; Neil Barrett; Marcelo Burlon County of Milan; Dsquared2; Daks; Sartorial Monk; Palm Angels; GCDS, and Frankie Morello. EXCLUSIVE: Chambre Syndicale Releases New Additions to Paris Men’s Week

MAN UP: The dates and times are yet to be confirmed, but the Fédération de la Haute Couture et de la Mode on Monday released the list of new additions to the official runway schedule for Paris Men’s Fashion Week in January, with Vetements among the headlining acts.
As reported, the maverick fashion label plans to stage its next coed show — for the fall 2018 season — on Jan. 19 in the French capital. Other names joining the official lineup include France’s Nïuku, Germany’s GmbH, Sweden’s Acne Studios and Britain’s Dunhill London, which in June presented the debut collection from ex-Burberry alum and new creative director Mark Weston on its home turf.
His approach may be full-on gender fluid, but Palomo Spain’s Alejandro Gomez Palomo will also be joining the men’s runway ranks this season. Off-White will be returning to Paris after showing in Florence in June as a special guest of the 92nd edition of international men’s wear trade show Pitti Uomo.
New highlights on the official presentation lineup, meanwhile, include Myar, the solo project of Andrea Rosso, son of entrepreneur Renzo Rosso and the creative director of Diesel licenses, as well as cult Japanese label Takahiromiyashita the Soloist, which earlier
