London Fashion Week Men’s Fall 2018: Ones to Watch

John Alexander Skelton
Born and raised in York, John Alexander Skelton received his master’s in fashion men’s wear at Central Saint Martins and took on internships at E. Tautz and Patrik Ervell before launching his label last year. Selected by Giles Deacon, Skelton is a recipient of the Sarabande scholarship, an initiative from The Lee Alexander McQueen Foundation that aids young designers. He is working out of a studio at Sarabande in east London.
Sustainability is a key theme for Skelton, who incorporates repurposed materials into his ranges and takes a DIY approach to his work. He has a loom in his studio and many of his fabrics are handwoven, as is much of his knitwear. “Everything I dye is also done by hand using natural dye. The handcrafted element is my signature, in a way,” said the designer.
For fall 2018, Skelton has been working with mills in Ireland, mixing British wool and Irish linen.
“I have been doing a lot of hand weaving, as well, on the loom. I have also done a few natural dyes this time, one using an ancient European dye, the European version of indigo, called woad,” he said.
Skelton’s main focus has always been on the process and

London Fashion Week Men’s Fall 2018: Inspirations

From skiing to winning the lottery, London men’s wear designers looked to a wide range of subjects for inspiration for their fall collections. Here, some of the topics that sparked their creativity ahead of the shows, which begin on Saturday.
“This season we celebrate the 70th  anniversary of the Trialmaster jacket, which gave me an opportunity to revisit our British roots and present our Made in U.K. collection. Looking through our Trialmaster history led me to explore English youth subcultures and how our jackets have been adopted and customized since the Fifties. The iconic silhouettes from this era including the field, parka and biker jackets have been updated this season with added functionality and modern fabrications. The hero piece of the collection is the anniversary Trialmaster, which is entirely manufactured in the U.K., in a new tumbled coated cotton and reflective tape with badges, celebrating our heritage.” — Delphine Ninous, creative director, Belstaff
“A deep dive into the big blue. The collection stands as a creative call to arms and focuses on responsible design and sourcing to protect both planet and wearer.” — Christopher Raeburn
“It’s about escaping life, going to Noel’s house party and the adventures of kids’ coloring books.” — Liam Hodges

Milan Men’s Fashion Week Reflects Industry Changes

MILAN — The latest Milan Men’s Fashion Week schedule reflects the changes in the men’s wear industry, according to Carlo Capasa, president of Italy’s Camera Nazionale della Moda.
“The concept of how men’s wear is shown has changed and so has the concept of the calendar — everything is combined together and there is more and more cross-pollination,” Capasa contended. “The shift is real.”
The shows will start on Jan. 12 with the Ermenegildo Zegna evening show and will end on Jan. 15, anchored by the Giorgio Armani and Fendi shows. Overall, the runway shows will be 31 in total.
Capasa said the evolution has led the association to create a new format for the calendar, which now “combines presentations and shows in a single tale that each brand offers in line with its own aesthetic and vision.”
The first chapter of coed shows, as Capasa called it, will take place in January, followed by the second chapter in February. Next month these will include Diesel Black Gold; the Italian brand Isabel Benenato founded by Isabel Vitiello; Neil Barrett; Marcelo Burlon County of Milan; Dsquared2; Daks; Sartorial Monk; Palm Angels; GCDS, and Frankie Morello. A number of brands, including Gucci, Bottega Veneta and Missoni, have chosen to

EXCLUSIVE: Chambre Syndicale Releases New Additions to Paris Men’s Week

MAN UP: The dates and times are yet to be confirmed, but the Fédération de la Haute Couture et de la Mode on Monday released the list of new additions to the official runway schedule for Paris Men’s Fashion Week in January, with Vetements among the headlining acts.
As reported, the maverick fashion label plans to stage its next coed show — for the fall 2018 season — on Jan. 19 in the French capital. Other names joining the official lineup include France’s Nïuku, Germany’s GmbH, Sweden’s Acne Studios and Britain’s Dunhill London, which in June presented the debut collection from ex-Burberry alum and new creative director Mark Weston on its home turf.
His approach may be full-on gender fluid, but Palomo Spain’s Alejandro Gomez Palomo will also be joining the men’s runway ranks this season. Off-White will be returning to Paris after showing in Florence in June as a special guest of the 92nd edition of international men’s wear trade show Pitti Uomo.
New highlights on the official presentation lineup, meanwhile, include Myar, the solo project of Andrea Rosso, son of entrepreneur Renzo Rosso and the creative director of Diesel licenses, as well as cult Japanese label Takahiromiyashita the Soloist, which earlier

Why Carrie Underwood Went from Working Out 6 Days a Week to Just 1 or 2: ‘That Just Kind of Has to Be Okay’

Only made it to the gym twice this week? Then you and Carrie Underwood have something in common.

Though the superstar singer is known for her sculpted legs, she admitted Thursday that she isn’t working out as much as she used to.

“I used to work out six days a week,” Underwood, 34, told E!. “But now that’s a little rare, sometimes it’s one or two times a week and that just kind of has to be okay. And it is okay because whatever I’m doing that’s keeping me out of the gym is important.”

And the Nashville crooner certainly has plenty on her plate. Along with her music, Underwood has her Calia by Carrie Underwood activewear line and a busy life with her husband Mike Fisher, who just retired from the NHL after making it to the Stanley Cup Finals, and their 2-year-old son Isaiah.

Underwood says she makes family time a priority over the gym, but when she does get in a workout, it often becomes a family affair — especially when Isaiah crashes her workouts.

“He probably will, 90% of the time, wander into my workout session,” she said. “But it’s nice to be able to stop and give him a kiss.”

Fisher will join in too, but even the former professional athlete can’t keep up with Underwood.

“Mainly, when we work out together, we’re just working out in the same space,” she said. “But I will say, the other day I was doing the ab wheel … and later on that day, Mike said something like, ‘I’m not ready for the ab wheel yet.’ ”

And along with her ab routine, Underwood will do sprints and lunges in her hilly neighborhood.

“I do a lot of squats, I do a lot of lunges, I do a lot of curtsy lunges, I do a lot of goblet squats, I use the leg press machine,” she said.

Opening Ceremony Taps Wasikowska, Stanfield for Fashion Week Event

Opening Ceremony won’t forget the victims of Hurricane Harvey even during New York Fashion Week.
The designers and retailers will showcase their fall/winter 2017 collection in a dance performance on Sunday, Sept. 10 called “Changers.” The show was written and directed by Spike Jonze, choreographed by Ryan Heffington and will feature Mia Wasikowska and Lakeith Stanfield.
Now Opening Ceremony said the performance at La MaMa Experimental Theatre Club, 66 E 4th St in the East Village, will also be open to the public for four nights, Sept. 11, 12, 14 and 15. All proceeds from the ticket sales — which are $ 15 — will be donated to the Greater Houston Community Foundation’s Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund.
The performance explores the evolution of relationships and will be told through movement and dance. Following the show on Sept. 10, the Opening Ceremony fall collection will be available for pre-order.
In the past, Opening Ceremony’s founders Humberto Leon Carol Lim have teamed with Jonze on other projects including “100% Lost Cotton,” a play at the Metropolitan Opera, and a collaboration for Jonze’s movies “Her” and “Where the Wild Things Are.”

Minnie Mouse to Attend Her First New York Fashion Week

MINNIE TAKES MANHATTAN: It’s about time: Minnie Mouse will be touching down in Manhattan next week to attend her first New York Fashion Week. Her first order of business is posing for photographs at the Empire State Building Observatory on Tuesday at 10 a.m. During her stay she plans to attend a master class at Instagram with Eva Chen, head of fashion partnerships, and visit Refinery 29 to talk trends with Annie Georgia Greenberg, fashion editor at large, video producer and host.  She may even attend a fashion week party Friday night. At press time, she had no plans to attend a fashion show, but obviously that could change once publicists get wind of her visit.
Long considered a fashion icon, Minnie has served as a muse for designers, inspiring new fashion collections and appearing in magazines and runway shows all over the world. Her classic polka-dot ensemble has been continually reimagined by the fashion industry through the decades.

Brands to Ride Wave of Strong Demand at Miami Swim Week

MIAMI — As the retail sector reels, swimwear is sitting pretty. It’s just the good news that vendors and buyers want to hear as they head to the annual Miami Swim Week, whose three trade shows — SwimShow, Hammock and Cabana — begin July 22.
Neck-and-neck with outerwear and ath-leisure for healthy sales, swimwear is one of the few categories still registering growth, according to The NPD Group Inc. The market research firm reported U.S. swimwear sales totaled $ 5 billion from the beginning of June 2016 through the end of May 2017, a 10 percent increase on the same period during the previous year. Innovative fit and fabrics, the wellness movement, and being an early, natural adapter to e-commerce are factors buoying the category when much of the apparel industry is sinking.
“The definitive message on the street is that swimwear is an unstoppable force,” said SwimShow director Judy Stein, of beach-to-boardwalk styles having reached critical mass popularity. “This trend has fueled both start-ups and established brands.”
Marshal Cohen, chief industry analyst for The NPD Group, further cited comfort, durability and improved sizing as reasons consumers feel confident in purchasing swimwear compared to sportswear with its fussier fits and come-and-go trends.
“There’s a 98 percent confidence

TORRID HITS THE RUNWAYS: Torrid, which designs and retails apparel, lingerie, swimwear, accessories and footwear for the plus-size woman, is the first plus-size women’s fashion brand to present at NYFW: The Shows as part of IMG. The runway show will take place Sept. 12.

Selected by a panel of judges who include “Project Runway” winner Ashley Nell Tipton, celebrity makeup artist Priscilla Ono and model Candice Huffine, the finalists will walk the runway before going on to a third and final round of competition, where the winner will be selected by Torrid friends and fans.
Torrid’s model search kicked off in May, with online submissions followed this summer by live casting in Los Angeles, Seattle, Houston and Atlanta. The retailer has also extended its search to Canada for the first time, with a live casting in Ontario. Last year, 10,000 women applied. The winner will have the title “Face of Torrid 2018” and will receive a Torrid modeling contract and wardrobe. She will also host Torrid store openings and events as a brand ambassador, will be featured

Raf Reigned at New York Fashion Week: Men’s

Raf saved the week.
Designer Raf Simons’ “Blade Runner”-inspired spring show in an alley in Chinatown Tuesday night was undoubtedly the highlight of an otherwise lackluster New York Fashion Week: Men’s, which also was boosted by the inclusion of Hugo Boss for the second time. But because in large part to the ongoing the lack of many other high-profile designers, the latest edition was perhaps the weakest of the last five.
The list of missing names — Tommy Hilfiger, Ralph Lauren, Calvin Klein, Michael Kors, Thom Browne, Joseph Abboud, John Varvatos, Tim Coppens and John Elliott — was seemingly longer than those who opted to participate.
The scarcity of marquee names also impacted the number of overseas buyers and editors who attended — even though the editors’ expenses have often been paid by the brands or the CFDA in the past. And even those who did make the trip essentially skipped the last day of shows on Thursday, which had more spread-out schedule of lesser-known names such as Luar and C2H4.
Despite the challenges, the organizers remain committed to the idea of a separate men’s week.
Mark Beckham, chief marketing officer for the Council of Fashion Designers of America, said the shows “really showed the diversity of

Rihanna Brings Fenty Back to New York Fashion Week

Au revoir, Proenza. Adieu, Rodarte. Ta-ta, Thom Browne. While several high-profile American brands have decided to abandon New York Fashion Week for Paris, at least one major international name is doing the opposite and bringing her show back to town: Rihanna.
After two seasons showing her Fenty Puma by Rihanna collection in Paris, WWD has learned that Rihanna is heading back to New York Fashion Week, where she launched the line with her first show for fall 2016.
Rihanna was unavailable for comment but Puma issued this statement: “After two successful seasons showing during Paris Fashion Week, Rihanna has decided to return to New York and show her Fenty Puma by Rihanna spring 2018 collection during NYFW, making this the first time she will present during September NYFW.”
Details of the date and location of the show have yet to be confirmed, but if the past is any indication, it will be one of the late shows with an elaborate set. Rihanna presented her first Fenty Puma collection at 23 Wall Street, followed by spring 2017 at Paris’ Hôtel Salomon de Rothschild, and most recently at Bibliothèque Nationale de France for fall. Reportedly working with a different designer every season, including Adam Selman

Designers to Watch During New York Fashion Week: Men’s

Brand: Private Policy
Designers: Haoran Li and Siying Qu
Aesthetic: Genderless luxury streetwear
Backstory: The duo met while they were design students at The New School’s Parsons School of Design. Both China natives who had emigrated to New York to fulfill their dreams in fashion, they graduated in May 2015 and blended Qu’s talents in women’s wear and Li’s in men’s wear to create Private Policy. They offered up a range of unisex silhouettes in high-quality fabrics such as satin/velvet, silk/wool and fur, with a mission to reinvent downtown streetwear. But the collection also delivers a loud societal message and a call to action — prior seasons have taken on issues such as slave labor and global warning.
Spring Inspiration: Trinkets: A View of America Through Foreigners’ Eyes. The idea behind the collection is that in light of the current political climate, the idea of the American Dream may be lost. So the duo collected some pieces from ordinary life and infused them into Native American-inspired vests and jackets, reinvented denim jackets and pants embellished with rhinestones and abstract prints that resemble the Thank You plastic bags used at convenience stores around the country.
Why They Want to Show in New York: New York is where

Couture Week Tells Its Stories on Instagram

HASHTAG COUTURE: The Fédération de la Haute Couture et de la Mode, the recently renamed governing body of French fashion, is reprising its Instagram curation in time for the July couture shows, which began today in Paris.
Supermodel and entrepreneur Natalia Vodianova, fashion bloggers Helena Bordon and Tina Leung, fashion editors Emma Hope Allwood and Meruyert Ibragim, The Webster’s Laure Hériard-Dubreuil, illustrator Kris Atomic, stylist Jonathan Huguet, and photographers James Bort and Stéphane Feugère have been invited to create exclusive content for the federation’s @ParisFashionWeek account.
These 11 personalities — with a combined reach of around four million — are expected to capture the high-fashion and jewelry scene via the photo-sharing network’s Instagram Stories feature.
The federation’s social initiative will culminate on July 5 with the annual Soirée Haute Couture. A photo studio designed to look like a “mini runway show” will be installed in the Petit Palais, to capture guests in their finery. Designers and couturiers have been invited to bring the entourage that best represents their house and brand to the “La Vie en Rose”-themed event.
Developed last year by KCD digital, a branch of the public relations and production agency, the #InstaCouture initiative was put in place last year to heighten

Ones to Watch During Milan Men’s Fashion Week

POAN

A look from Poan

Georg Weissacher had a strong men’s wear background when he founded POAN in 2015.
The Austrian designer, who was the former head of men’s wear at Vivienne Westwood and who lives in London, said the brand’s name stands for “Peoples of All Nations.” As such, the label takes a multicultural approach, and every season focuses on a distinctive theme involving all mankind.
Describing his method as “holistic,” Weissacher said he tends to approach the development of his collections by using many art forms, everything from cinema and music to literature and architecture.
This results in an eclectic, versatile collection created in the area around Florence and defined by a modern take on tailoring that combines, in the same garment, knitted and woven elements crafted from the same fibers.
By calling his spring 2018 collection, which will be shown in Milan on June 18, “Le Phénomène humain,” Weissacher paid homage to the namesake philosophy and theology book written by Jesuit priest Pierre Teilhard de Chardin in 1955.
“I stole this volume when I was 20 from a monastery’s library,” said the designer, explaining that the book focuses on Teilhard de Chardin’s idea that evolution is a complex process.
Weissacher also said the collection

London Fashion Week Men’s Spring 2018: Ones to Watch

Bodybound
Born and raised in London, Bodybound creative directors Kim Wilkins and Pliny Champion launched their label in 2012.
The duo met in college. Wilkins studied knitwear at Central Saint Martins and graduated in 2005, then moved on to study men’s wear at the Royal College of Art. He completed the program in 2009. Champion took a more varied route, going from studying biology to environmental public relations and photography. He ended up in fashion, graduating from Imperial College London. They have worked for labels including Alexander McQueen, Ermenegildo Zegna, Matthew Williamson, Halston and Mark Fast. The designers, who produce their collections between London and Bali, were selected by Yohji Yamamoto as finalists for the Hyères award in 2012.
Wilkins said their man is someone who “has an appreciation for subversion.” Champion added: “A little irreverence never did anyone any harm.
“We believe in challenging the relationship between utility and luxury,” Champion said. “We’re interested in the modern masculine aesthetic, and create innovative textiles and engineered knitwear for utilitarian silhouettes.”
Wilkins said the due is “always looking to challenge mediocrity. Everyone’s approach to design is unique, the collections reflect our interests. Our process is complicated, but the message is simple.”
This season the duo will present

Ice Cube Will Still Make His Appearance On Bill Maher This Week

On Monday, a spokesperson for Sen. Al Franken (D-Minn.) told HuffPost that he would be dropping out of his upcoming appearance on “Real Time with Bill Maher” amid the host’s recent controversy. Now, a representative for Ice Cube has confirmed that the musician will not be canceling his own appearance for this Friday’s episode.

“Ice Cube will still appear on Bill Maher this Friday as scheduled to talk about the release of ‘Death Certificate: 25th Anniversary’ edition, an album that was recorded in the wake of the Rodney King beating in 1991, which sadly, speaks to many of the same race issues that we as a society are still dealing with today,” the spokesperson for Ice Cube told HuffPost over email.

This comes after a TMZ report early this morning claimed Ice Cube would not bail on the appearance. The apparent reason was so that he could have a part in discussing the controversy.

During Maher’s show last Friday, the host joked that he was a “house n****r” while responding to a statement by Sen. Ben Sasse (R-Neb.). While in conversation, the senator had invited Maher to “work in the fields” of his represented state. In a rare move for the comedian, Maher later apologized and called his use of the term “offensive.”

Ice Cube is the second person to indicate he would still appear on “Real Time.”

Symone Sanders, an activist and former national press secretary for Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders, told HuffPost she also plans to attend.

“I am still planning on doing the show Friday,” she wrote in an email. “I thought Maher’s comment, Ben Sasse’s reaction and the crowd’s applause were all equally distasteful, inappropriate and offensive. I am glad Maher too recognized as such and issued an apology.”

Sen. Franken chose to cancel his upcoming appearance given the use of the “n-word.”

“Senator Franken believes that what Bill Maher said was inappropriate and offensive, which is why he made the decision not to appear on the next episode of ‘Real Time,’” Franken’s spokesperson had said in an emailed statement. “He was glad to see Bill, who the Senator considers to be a good friend, apologize and express sincere regret for his comment.”

EXCLUSIVE: Vlone to Show During Paris Men’s Fashion Week

It’s an interesting week for 25-year-old Harlem native A$ AP Bari to reveal he’s showing Vlone — his highly sought-after streetwear line — during Men’s Fashion Week in Paris.
It’s the same week Gucci has come under fire for a jacket Alessandro Michele presented at his Cruise 2018 show, which looked very similar to a piece Dapper Dan, another designer from Harlem, created in 1989 for Olympic gold medalist Diane Dixon. Dapper Dan, whose real name is Daniel Day, spent the Eighties outfitting celebrities in his custom pieces, which he made by printing luxury logos onto different fabrics. Critics were upset that Gucci wasn’t transparent about the reference. They later acknowledged his influence in an Instagram post.
“I feel like nobody should hate on what somebody gets inspired by,” said Bari, who is a member of the A$ AP Mob collective. “But it’s sad that it takes 20 or 25 years for them to be inspired by Dapper Dan when he could have been a designer for Gucci. Why didn’t Louis Vuitton give him an opportunity to design for them?”
Bari, who has no formal fashion training, is a reflection of how things are slowly shifting and brands are starting to work directly with streetwear designers.

New Names, Resort-Focus Energize Australian Fashion Week

SYDNEY — New names, Liberty print swimwear and unisex surfwear were among the biggest buyer takeaways from Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia.
Now in its 22nd year, the annual event pushed dates back several weeks to rebrand itself from a spring to resort showcase last year, resulting in a 75 percent increase in international buyer attendance over 2015, according to organizer IMG.
The company said it expects this year’s eight-day event, which concluded Sunday with a weekend of ticketed consumer presentations of the week’s highlights, to have drawn a cumulative attendance of 30,000.
Among them were a contingent of 33 international delegates, including 23 buyers — a number on par with 2016 — from New York, London, Paris, Singapore, Hong Kong, Tokyo and Dubai. Airfares and accommodation were covered by the event.
More than 80 brands from Australia, New Zealand and China were showcased in 42 solo and group runway shows and a new IMG-operated “Designer Suites” showroom located at the event’s central hub for five years, Redfern’s Carriageworks.
Buyers praised the number of collections on offer, the event’s friendly vibe, good organization and the picturesque off-site locations that anchored the event in Sydney.
