John Oliver Perfectly Explains Trump’s ‘Weird’ Relationship With Putin

President Donald Trump has repeatedly shown admiration for Russian President Vladimir Putin, even as his campaign’s alleged ties to Russia have come under scrutiny.

“There is no hard proof yet of direct links between Trump himself and Russia,” John Oliver pointed out on HBO’s “Last Week Tonight” on Sunday. “But he does have a noticeably soft spot for both the country and its leader.”

Oliver then played a montage of clips showing Trump saying how good it would be to get along with Russia.

“It’s a bit weird,” Oliver said. “You’ve been objectively nicer to Vladimir Putin than you have to Meryl Streep.”

Oliver spent much of the segment looking at how Putin treats his enemies, launched a vigorous defense of the United States and then created a warning for Trump ― in the form of a techno song.

Newt Gingrich: Donald Trump Sticking With ‘Celebrity Apprentice’ Is ‘Weird’

Stalwart Donald Trump supporter Newt Gingrich has denounced the president-elect’s decision to continue as executive producer of the reality show “The New Celebrity Apprentice” when he’s in office.

“I think it’s weird. It’s weird. I don’t think it’s relevant,” he told Fox News on Friday.

“He is going to be the executive producer of the American government and a huge TV show called ‘Leading the World.’”

Gingrich suggested Trump turn the program over to his three eldest children. “He ought to just relax, give the executive producer to Eric or Donald or Ivanka. I think he is still going through some transition things here where it hasn’t quite sunk in totally,” he added.

The president-elect announced his plans on Thursday to continue his relationship with the NBC reality franchise. He’ll run the show in his “spare time,” Trump adviser Kellyanne Conway said Friday, dismissing concerns that he won’t have much downtime as president.

“Were we so concerned about the hours and hours and hours spent on the golf course by the current president?” she said on CNN, in reference to President Barack Obama. “I mean, presidents have a right to do things in their spare time or their leisure time. I mean nobody objects to that.”

But Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) slammed Trump for continuing with the program when he apparently doesn’t have time for regular intelligence briefings, Politico reported. “I consider it bizarre,” he said.

The president-elect has a “big stake” in the NBC production, Trump spokeswoman Hope Hicks told ABC. And that’s what worries critics concerned about Trump’s potential conflicts of interest in the White House.

It would be difficult for him to be impartial about issues such as telecommunication laws, a rival TV program or legislative decisions that may affect brands advertising on his program, if Trump continues his association with the show, they believe.

NBC’s parent company, Comcast, is a media conglomerate regulated by the Federal Communications Commission, which he will soon oversee.

Trump will “be tempted, consciously or otherwise, to favor NBC or use the White House to promote this source of revenue,” Norm Eisen, who served as Obama’s chief ethics lawyer, told the Chicago Tribune.

The show that brought the New York City businessman to national attention is due to air again with new host, actor and former California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger (R) in January.

Weird Washington: Your Travel Guide to Washington’s Local Legends and Best Kept Secrets

Weird Washington: Your Travel Guide to Washington’s Local Legends and Best Kept Secrets

Ah, Washington: evergreens, coffee, rock, and rain. That’s pretty much it, right? Well, no. There is a whole lot of weird going on in our state. Washington is home to some of the weirdest travel destinations, scariest legends, and most colorful folks in the United States.Because there are so many odd and unusual tales, cemeteries, beasts, and people here, it took two authors to traverse the state to document it all. With cameras and notepads, and apples (of course) in hand, Jefferson Davis and Al Eufrasio boldly ventured the highways and byways, back roads and forests, shorelines and mountaintops to investigate all the state has to offer. For starters, there are lots of unexplained events here–in fact, we’re ranked number two in the whole country for mysterious phenomena: America’s only unsolved hijacking happened here; look up, but watch out for raining rocks, mysterious flying men, and UFOs; look down, and you might uncover a body turned to soap in Crescent Lake or deadly monsters in Lake Washington.Where else can you find a tribute to a giant squirting razor clam? Discover Ozette, our own Pompeii of the Pacific Northwest, cruise by Gospodor’s monumental controversy on your way to Gravity Hill, but if that’s Bigfoot you see, no worries because here in Washington, Bigfoot saves lives Investigate the elusive Northwest tree octopus, feed a hungry ghost at Starvation Heights, and see what’s not going on in Aberdeen. Yes, Washington is a whole lot weirder than you ever imagined, and "Weird Washington" is here to show and tell you all about it.

Girl Bullied Over ‘Star Wars’ Gets Weird Al On Her Side

A girl bullied for loving “Star Wars” has the Force and Weird Al Yankovic with her.

Layla Murphy, 8, met the parody star at a concert recently after the 501st Legion, a “Star Wars” costume group with a charitable streak, helped her out.

Layla is yet another young girl who was teased at school for liking Star Wars amongst other "boy" things. As a result of…

Posted by The 501st Legion on Tuesday, August 11, 2015

Girls at Layla’s Norfolk, Virginia, school teased her, saying that “Star Wars” was for boys, CNN reported. She eventually asked her mother if she could stop wearing her “Star Wars” gear, including an R2-D2 jacket.

“She was asked if she was turning into a boy,” her mother, Nicolette Molina, told CNN.

A member of the 501st Legion who had met Layla at a fan convention was told of the kid’s troubles by Molina and summoned the Internet to send Layla support and “Star Wars” souvenirs. It was all to reassure Layla to be herself.

Then the 501st came through with perhaps the coolest gesture of all.

“Taking it one step further, Layla became the next recipient of the custom Stormtrooper armor originally built for another girl (Katie Goldman) who was in a similar situation,” the group wrote on Facebook.

A fully costumed Layla met Yankovic, who apparently mingles with denizens of the galaxy far, far away …

… and is also known for his “Star Wars” parodies, MTV noted.

Don’t listen to those bullies, Layla. “Star Wars” can be enjoyed by the entire universe.

And The Kinsella Family’s Weird Pose Lives On

The family that poses weirdly together, stays together, right? That seems to be the case with the Kinsella siblings, a family that Huffington Post first visited with three years ago. For almost three decades, the Kinsellas have posed for photos in the same somewhat strange stance with the brothers on the outside and sisters with legs crossed in the air in the middle. It’s something they started doing in 1988 and they’ve struck “the pose” at weddings, multiple Major League Baseball games, their mother’s funeral, home gatherings, a tattoo shop and the penultimate photo for this baseball-loving family: the Field of Dreams site. The four siblings — three of whom live in Houston and one in Nebraska — even traveled back to their childhood home in Brick Township, N.J., to pose for a photo there.

After we wrote about the Kinsellas’ pose, they were contacted by The Today Show, Ellen DeGeneres and Good Morning America — all seeking to have the four adult siblings on the air. The Today Show flew the four to New York where they struck “the pose” for the world to see and “had a blast for three days,” said family spokesman Mike Kinsella.

Brothers Mike and Tim Kinsella and sisters Sharyn Bauer Kemper and Eileen McFarland all have identical “pose” tattoos. While no two of the siblings agree how “the pose” originated, Mike Kinsella notes, “Remember, we started taking them long before date-stamped photos.”

kinsella2

How does Mike explain the connection the four have — and the world’s interest in their family photo tradition? Simple, he said. “We grew up loving each other and we remain very close,” said Mike. That comes across in “the pose.” “We just have fun. We get together and always laugh. You can see it in the pose.”

He said a family reunion is planned for later this summer and the Nebraska sister is thinking of moving to Texas once she retires. The times, of course, aren’t always good. Sister Eileen just completed a 30-day treatment course for skin cancer and brother Tim lost his job at a print shop. But “we will always be there for each other,” said Mike.

And yes, there will always be more photos of “the pose.”

Holly Madison On Her ‘Weird’ Relationship With Kendra Wilkinson

For years, Holly Madison and Kendra Wilkinson seemed to be part of a secret sisterhood. But a lot has changed since the women ended their relationships with Hugh Hefner, and the former stars of “The Girls Next Door” have opened up about what life was really like at the Playboy Mansion.

Madison and Wilkinson have been trading barbs since writing their dueling memoirs, with Wilkinson recently saying Madison published her new tell-all book, Down the Rabbit Hole: Curious Adventures and Cautionary Tales of a Former Playboy Bunny, for “revenge.”

Madison has her own view. In the above clip from her upcoming interview on “Oprah: Where Are They Now?,” she discusses how her relationship with Wilkinson has changed over the years.

“Kendra’s and my relationship has definitely been weird,” Madison says in the above video. “I feel like, over the years, I’ve known like three different people.”

holly madison and kendra wilkinson

When they first met, Madison says Wilkinson “started off as this girl who seemed nice.”

In 2005, “The Girls Next Door” premiered to huge ratings on E! and Madison and Wilkinson became household names. The breakout hit focused on lives of Hefner’s then-girlfriends, Madison, Wilkinson and Bridget Marquardt. For five seasons, cameras documented the drama that unfolded inside the Playboy Mansion walls.

Madison says Wilkinson changed into “this girl who’s not a girl’s girl and is very competitive and pushes away other girls.”

holly madison and kendra wilkinson

By 2009, all three women had left the mansion and ended their relationships with Hefner. Wilkinson married former wide receiver Hank Baskett in 2009 and Madison went on to marry Pasquale Rotella in 2013.

“When she met her husband she was very nice and seemed to have grown into this really different person,” Madison says.

kendra wilkinson and hank baskett

But once again, their friendship didn’t last. “And then later down the road we had a falling out, so it’s been all over the place,” she says. “I want viewers to pick up the book and read the whole story.”

Madison’s memoir, Down the Rabbit Hole: Curious Adventures and Cautionary Tales of a Former Playboy Bunny, is available now.

“Oprah: Where Are They Now?” airs Saturdays at 10 p.m. ET on OWN.

Jon Stewart Shows How Weird Rand Paul’s Presidential Announcement Was

Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) made his big announcement on Tuesday, telling a crowd in Louisville that he’s running for president in 2016.

But as Jon Stewart pointed out on Tuesday night’s “Daily Show,” it took a while to get there.

Before Paul went onstage, there were multiple speakers, the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance, the singing of the national anthem and several video presentations — including one that featured a clip from “The Daily Show.”

“Thirty minutes into the show, I had said more at this event than the guy who was there to announce his candidacy for president,” Stewart said.

Along with taking forever to get to the announcement, there were a few weird moments, like when former congressman J.C. Watts (R-Okla.) slipped and said Paul would become “the next United States of America,” as well as a very excited young man in the audience.

Check it out in the clip above.

Podcast Reviews: No Pressure To Be Funny AND You Made It Weird

No Pressure To Be Funny: Festive Edition 2014

2014-12-20-NPTBF.jpegI don’t pretend to understand all the issues that are discussed on No Pressure To Be Funny, the excellent monthly panel show from England. That’s partially because a number of the subjects are UK-centric and partially because I’m not as well read as I should be.

Each month the show’s creators, Alistair Barrie and Nick Revell, stir a pot of lively discussions featuring journalists and comedians. This month it’s Hal Cruttenden, Michael Deacon, Jo Jo Smith and first-timer James O’Brien (who normally serves as the host for the show.)

While the results are frequently humorous, the show stays true to its title and not everything is played for laughs. The panel has a field day knocking Russell Brand and his style of comedy around for a bit. At one point Deacon points out how actual numbers make ludicrous one of Brand’s points in his recent book Revolution, which prompts Cruttenden to say, “You are ruining the poetry with facts.”

A lot of this episode keeps poking at ongoing UKIP (United Kingdom Independent Party) scandals, which are making easy targets of a host of politicians. Series co-creator and comedian Revell fires up a wicked salvo against the lazy, self-entitled nouveau riche and how they compare so poorly to everyone else during this season of giving. (I love his line, “I’ve acquired ADHD from living in the modern world, although I prefer to call it ‘multitasking’.”)

If you’re not afraid to learn a little something along with your comedy, you’re likely going to enjoy this show.

You Made It Weird with Pete Holmes – Guest: Dana Carvey

2014-12-20-YMIW.jpegPete Holmes is no stranger to “going deep” with some of the guests on You Made It Weird. And it’s a treat to hear his conversation with SNL veteran Dana Carvey, a comedic performer that we don’t hear from very often or know very much about what makes him tick.

In a conversation that verges on three hours, Carvey lets his guard down a bit to reveal elements of a difficult home life, fighting stage fright to get up on stage, and details of his health problems including a botched bypass that were never fully revealed.

Maybe the secret was that Carvey was just off a 13-hour road trip and Holmes had just finished an appointment with his shrink. (Carvey told me in a conversation shortly after this interview was recorded that he didn’t know what to expect and he just decided to go wherever the conversation ended up going.)

If you’ve ever wondered what’s behind the man behind The Church Lady (one of many Carvey characters that gets talked about here), this is going to be good listen.
