What to Watch: Industry Keeps Focus on Models’ Well-being

Nearly a year after numerous models alleged on-the-job mistreatment and sexual abuse, leading forces in the the fashion industry have adopted policies to try to ensure their well-being.
The seas, so to speak, were considerably calmer before last fall’s New York Fashion Week. Reports of Harvey Weinstein’s alleged decades of sexual harassment and sexual abuse had yet to break. Ditto for The Boston Globe’s February investigative exposé, which detailed models’ claims against several well-known fashion photographers. Other models also described alleged sexual misconduct in reports in The New York Times. In October 2017, the #MeToo movement started to surge and model-activist Cameron Russell called out the fashion industry for its rampant sexual harassment, and shared models’ stories on her Instagram feed.
After Kering and LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton issued a charter for models last fall, Condé Nast and Tapestry Inc. — parent of Coach and Kate Spade — in January released ones of their own for photo/video shoots and fashion shows and presentations with the intention of safeguarding those who work with the companies. Kering and LVMH implemented strict new measures governing the well-being of models, resulting in a ban on size-zero and under-16 models from shows including Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Saint

Technology and Psychological Well-being

Technology and Psychological Well-being

In the modern world we are surrounded by technology. Gadgets such as cell phones, portable computers, and electronic diaries accompany us throughout the day. But is this a good thing? Are we being served by these technological wonders, or have we become enslaved by them? Does constant availability via technology make us more efficient or more stressed? Is our ability to connect with others all over the world, day or night, making us more sociable or turning us into recluses in a virtual world? This book considers the impact of technology on the different spheres of our life – work, home, family and leisure – and assesses ways in which to build better communication between technology developers and society to ensure that technology enhances our lives and psychological well-being, rather than damaging them.

Researchers Determine the Three Ways to Well-Being

As far as psychology theories go, University of Rochester’s Richard Ryan and Edward Deci’s Self-Determination Theory is one of the biggest out there. The theory has been used to analysis situations as diverse as the happiness of lawyers1, classroom environments2, and the training of sales-people3.

This is serious science, with hundreds of researchers using the Self-Determination Theory as the foundation of their own work, and thousands of studies backing the theory. Ryan and Deci’s foundational paper4 received an astounding 13191 citations, making it the Gangnam Style of motivational psychology, albeit with less dancing.

Getting down to the theory itself: the Self-Determination Theory is a wide-ranging theory that explains motivation, personality and well-being. The theory proposes that in order to live a good life, you must fulfill certain innate psychological needs that provide the foundations for motivation and well-being.4 These needs are not learned inclinations but fundamental parts of human nature.5

Specifically, the theory identifies three needs which underlies human goals and behaviors:6

1) The need for Autonomy: Autonomy is as a sense of willingness and choice in your actions. Note that this does not mean independence from others.

2) The need for Competence: Competence is defined as a need to effectively manage and control yourself and your environment.

3) The need for Social Relatedness: Social relatedness is defined as a need to be understood, appreciated by, connected to, relate to and care for others.

Thus, if you wondering about how to live better, Ryan and Deci would recommend setting and attaining goals that are conducive to the satisfaction of the needs for autonomy, competence and social relatedness.

Comparisons can be drawn between the Self-Determination Theory and Ryff’s model of Psychological Well-Being. Both are largely in agreement about the contents of well-being. However, Ryff uses her six categories to define well-being while Ryan and Deci posits that autonomy, competence and social relatedness are ways to achieve well-being.

The Science

These three fundamental needs predicts multiple positive outcomes. Daily changes of emotional well-being have been shown to be caused by daily fulfillment of the three basic needs.7 Increase in well-being due to the fulfillment of needs has been found in diverse contexts, such as nursing homes8 and at workplaces.9

Other studies found that the theory applies across cultures, in countries such as Bulgaria10 and Turkey.11 A study which included college students in the U.S., Australia, Mexico, Venezuela, the Philippines, Malaysia, China, and Japan found that perceived need satisfaction predicted well-being to a similar extent across all cultures.12

Balance is Better

While each fundamental need has been found to individually predict well-being,13 it is better to fulfill the three needs in a balanced way. Research shows that people with balanced need-fulfillment have higher well-being compared to those who have the same total fulfillment score but are skewed towards a particular need.14

This suggests that all three basic needs need to be fulfilled in order to achieve optimal well-being.

What Are You Hungry For?: The Chopra Solution to Permanent Weight Loss, Well-being, and Lightness of Soul

Basis for the upcoming PBS Special After promoting this message worldwide for thirty years, bestselling author Deepak Chopra focuses on the huge problem of weight control in America with exciting new concepts. “What Are You Hungry For?” is the breakthrough book that can bring weight under effortless control by linking it to personal fulfillment in every area of a reader’s life. What are you hungry for? Food? Love? Self-esteem? Peace? In this manual for “higher health,” based on the latest findings in both mainstream and alternative medicine, Deepak Chopra creates a vision of weight loss based on a deeper awareness of why people overeat – because they are trying to find satisfaction and wind up using food as a substitute for real fulfillment. Repudiating the failed approaches of crash dieting and all forms of deprivation, Chopra’s new book aims directly at the problem of finding fulfillment. When that problem is solved, he argues, normal eating falls into place automatically, and the entire system of mind and body achieves what it really desires. “Everyone’s life story is complicated, and the best intentions go astray because people find it hard to change,” writes Chopra. “Bad habits, like bad memories, stick around stubbornly when we wish they’d go away. But you have a great motivation working for you, which is your desire for happiness. I define happiness as the state of fulfillment, and everyone wants to be fulfilled. If you keep your eye on this, your most basic motivation, then the choices you make come down to a single question: “What am I hungry for?” Your true desire will lead you in the right direction. False desires lead in the wrong direction.” Wherever you are in life, this book will help point you in that right direction.
