Woolmark Prize Asia Semifinal Winners Named

HONG KONG — It’s certainly intimidating for a young fashion designer to speak in front of a roomful of editors, buyers and industry heavyweights, and doubly so if they cannot speak English. That was predicament facing two of the four winners named at the Woolmark Prize Hong Kong 2018/19 semifinals on Thursday.
But both of the non-English speakers managed to find the words at a dinner at Aberdeen Street Social, where designers Zhi Chen of I-Am-Chen, Mooyeol Lee of Youser, and Yohei Ohno and Angel Chen, each of whom have eponymous labels, were chosen to move on to the next round of the global competition.
“I never expected this, so I’m just surprised now. Thank you so much,” Japanese designer Yohei Ohno told the crowd with a stunned laugh. Earlier in the day, Ohno had conducted interviews accompanied by an interpreter.
Mooyeol Lee, who heads up South Korean label Youser, managed to say: “I never expected this honor, so thank you so much.” Lee had no interpreter, so to speak to the press about his brand he’d come equipped with a written statement in English.
Lee said winning felt like a dream, and his head is already swimming with ideas for the finals, which will

Watch Janet Jackson Surprise the Winners of Her Dance Competition and Invite Them to Perform at Billboard Awards

Rhythm Nation just got bigger!

Janet Jackson is all set to rock the stage at the 2018 Billboard Music Awards and she’ll be grooving along next to two excited new faces.

Dancers Phillip Galbert, 28, of New Britain, Conn. and La’Vala “Lala” Moss, 26, of Birmingham, Ala. had already received the news that they’d been chosen out of 75,000 hopefuls as winners of the star’s global #DanceWithJanet competition.

But they then learned from the superstar herself that not only were they part of her JTribe, but they’d soon be taking the stage to perform with her on national television.

“Obviously we saw what you did online and that’s the reason why you’re here. You did a great job,” Jackson, in the exclusive clip above, tells Galbert and Moss who first submitted auditions online.

“We’ve come to a decision,” she says seated on the floor next to her current dancers, “How would you like to dance with us on the Billboard Awards?”

The question was met with both dancers collapsing to floor in disbelief as Jackson and her dancers rush over to embrace them.

“It was so intense,” Moss says in an interview just after getting the news. “This was the longest audition I’ve ever had to do in my life but it was so worth it.”

Moss first made national headlines when her original audition tape went viral. Moss had opted to shoot her audition video in the middle of the street in Birmingham when an officer drove up to tell her to move. But after hearing what she was doing, the officer changed his mind, stopped traffic and put on his spotlight encouraging Moss to keep dancing and follow her dream.

For Bronx native Galbert, he almost didn’t have the chance to audition in person. After receiving word that his video audition earned him an invite to the final callbacks in Los Angeles, Galbert responded that he did not have the money to afford a flight from his current home in Connecticut. Furthermore, he was on the verge of eviction. But Jackson’s teamed helped him get to L.A. and the experience changed his life.

“As a professional dancer that’s your dream to dance with Janet Jackson,” Galbert said during an interview. “You grow up wanting to be with these people and inspired by these people…No one understands what I go through, and to have this given to me. It’s a once in a lifetime opportunity.”

As Jackson’s current JTribe members tell the newbies, “Dreams do come true!” They’ll all join the superstar onstage for her first television performance in nine years, at the Billboard Awards.

H&M Names Five Winners of Global Change Award

PARIS — Hennes & Mauritz AB named the five winners of its Global Change Award, and asked the public to vote online for one of them to help split the 1 million euro prize.
The fashion industry, including fast-fashion groups that offer inexpensive clothing at cut-throat prices, is under pressure to rein in waste as public awareness of environmental issues gains ground.
Winners were: Crop-A-Porter, which makes textile from food crop harvest leftovers; Algae Apparel, which uses algae as a dye; Smart Stitch, which makes dissolvable thread; The Regenerator, which separates cotton and polyester blends for recycling, and Fungi Fashion, which makes clothes from decomposing mushroom roots.
“All industries need to re-think, innovate and challenge status quo,” said H&M chief executive officer and board member Karl-Johan Persson.
The company noted that applicants offered a broad range of ideas, but that most of the solutions came from outside the fashion industry.
“This year’s Global Change Award winners are about disrupting business-as-usual to help transition us to a low-carbon and circular economy,” noted Vikram Widge, who heads climate finance and policy for the International Finance Corporation, and was a member of the award’s jury.
The winner of the public vote in the competition, now in its third year, will

British Fashion Council Names MA Scholarship Winners

AN EDUCATION: The British Fashion Council on Thursday named the three designers who have won MA scholarships for 2015 via its British Fashion Council Education Foundation.
They are Benny Andaloo, a BA graduate from Central Saint Martins, who will study the MA Fashion Men’s Wear course at CSM; Gabriella Sardena, a BA graduate from Manchester School of Art, who will study the MA Fashion Textiles course at CSM; and Shaun Harris, a BA graduate of Kingston University, who will study for an MA in Fashion Women’s Wear at the Royal College of Art.
The BFC Education Foundation is a registered charity, and the scholarship scheme is funded by donations from Coach, Marks & Spencer, Net-a-porter and Eiesha Bharti Pasricha.  The initiative funds both BA and MA scholarships, with fees for BA courses for U.K.-based students at 27,000 pounds, or $ 42,500, excluding living costs, and MA fees at around 9,500 pounds, or $ 14,900. The scholarship initiative is also supported by the British government with its employer ownership funding program, which allows employers to invest in the skills of a future work force.
Past recipients of the scholarships include Erdem Moralioglu, who won in 2002, and Aitor Throup, who won in 2004.

Here Are All The Winners Of This Year’s Cannes Film Festival

CANNES, France (AP) — The 68th Cannes Film Festival was brought to a surprising close Sunday with Jacques Audiard’s Sri Lankan refugee drama taking the festival’s coveted top honor, the Palme d’Or.

The choice of “Dheepan,” as selected by a jury led by Joel and Ethan Coen, left some critics scratching their heads. While the dapper French filmmaker has drawn widespread acclaim for films such as “A Prophet” and “Rust and Bone,” some critics were disappointed by the thriller climax of Audiard’s film. “Dheepan” is about a trio of Sri Lankans who pretend to be a family in order to flee their war-torn country and are settled in a violent housing project outside Paris. “This isn’t a jury of film critics,” Joel Coen told reporters after the awards ceremony, alongside fellow jurors like Guillermo del Toro and Jake Gyllenhaal. “This is a jury of artists who are looking at the work.”

The win for “Dheepan” comes at a time when Europe is particularly attuned to the experience of immigrants, following the recent deaths of hundreds crossing the Mediterranean, seeking Italian shores. Jury members, though, said “Dheepan” was chosen for its overall strength as a film, rather than any topicality.

“We all thought it was a very beautiful movie,” said Ethan Coen, calling the decision “swift.” ”Everyone had some high level of excitement and enthusiasm for it.”

Audiard, springing to the podium at the Palais des Festivals, accepted the award with warm gratitude, bowing to the jury. He was joined by the makeshift parents of his film: Kalieaswari Srinivasan and Antonythasan Jesuthasan, who himself was Tamil Tiger child soldier before finding political asylum in France.

“To receive a prize from the Coen brothers is exceptional,” said Audiard, who added that only receiving one from the Luc and Jean-Pierre Dardenne, the Belgian filmmaking siblings, could equal it.

The runner-up prize, the Grand Prix, went to “Son of Saul,” a grim Holocaust drama by first-time Hungarian director László Nemes. Some expected Nemes’ horrifying plunge into the life of an Auschwitz worker to take the top award, but it’s been 26 years since a debut film (Steven Soderbergh’s “Sex, Lies, and Videotape”) was given the Palme.

English actress Sienna Miller and Canadian actor Xavier Dolan, both jury members, sounded especially moved by “Son of Saul.” Miller called it “breathtaking” and an extraordinary accomplishment for a first-time filmmaker.

“Europe is still haunted by the destruction of the European Jews,” said Nemes. “That’s something that lives with us.”

Hou Hsiao-Hsien, the masterful 68-year-old Taiwanese filmmaker, won best director for his first feature in eight years: “The Assassin,” a lushly painterly martial arts drama.

The best actress prize was split but not the way some expected. It was given to both Rooney Mara, half of the romantic pair of Todd Haynes’ ’50s lesbian drama “Carol,” and Emmanuelle Bercot, the French star of the roller coaster marriage drama “My King.” (Bercot also directed the festival opener, “Standing Tall,” about a delinquent teenager.) Any split was presumed to go to Mara and her “Carol” co-star, Cate Blanchett.

Best actor was awarded to Vincent Lindon, the veteran French actor of Stéphane Brizé’s “The Measure of a Man.” He plays a man struggling to make a living after a long period of unemployment. The visibly moved Lindon won over some big-name competition, including Michael Caine, the star of Paolo Sorrentino’s unrewarded “Youth,” a wry, melancholy portrait of old age.

Lindon’s award added to a banner year at Cannes for France, which had five films out of the 19 in competition and went home with three awards.

Yorgos Lanthimos, a Greek filmmaker working in English for the first time, took the jury prize for his “The Lobster,” a deadpan dystopian comedy, starring Colin Farrell and Rachel Weisz, about a near-future where unmarried singles are turned into the animal of their choice.

“Chronic,” an understated drama about a home-care nurse (Tim Roth) for the terminally ill, took best screenplay for Mexican writer-director Michel Franco. Franco and Roth met three years ago when Roth, serving on a Cannes jury, helped award Franco the Un Certain Regard prize. “It’s a Cannes story,” said Franco.

The Camera d’Or, Cannes award for best first feature film, went to “La Tierra Y la Sombra.” César Augusto Acevedo’s debut, which played in the Critics Week section, is about an old farmer returning home to tend to his gravely ill son.

The Coens themselves took the Palme in 1991 for “Barton Fink.” The last two Cannes winners have been three-hour art-house epics: the glacial Turkish drama “Winter Sleep,” chosen last year by Jane Campion’s jury, and “Blue is the Warmest Color,” as picked by Steven Spielberg’s jury.

This year’s competition slate left some critics calling it a so-so year for Cannes. Some of the films that drew the biggest raves (“Mad Max: Fury Road,” Pixar’s “Inside Out”) played out of competition, while some in it (like Gus Van Sant’s “The Sea of Trees”) drew loud boos.

The festival was dominated by discussion about gender equality with many — from Blanchett to Jane Fonda — speaking about female opportunity in the movie business. “You hope it’s not just the year,” said Blanchett of the attention to women in film. “It’s not some sort of fashionable moment.” An honorary Palme d’Or was also given to French filmmaker Agnes Varda, the first woman to receive one and only the fourth director after Woody Allen, Clint Eastwood and Bernardo Bertolucci.

But the festival was overrun by an unlikely scandal when several women were turned away from the formal premiere of Todd Haynes’ “Carol” for wearing flat shoes, rather than high heels. The festival insisted it was the mistake of overzealous security guards and not part of Cannes’ notoriously strict dress code.

The festival, as it often is, was dominated by the unexpected, even on its last night. Nothing was more unforeseen — not even the Palme for “Dheepan” — than John C. Reilly, a co-star of “The Lobster” and another competition entry, “Tale of Tales,” took the stage to sing “Just a Gigolo” in a bright white suit.

Oscar Winners Thank God A Lot In Acceptance Speeches, But Not As Often As You’d Think

Oscar winners always thank God, right?

Wrong.

The stars who win big at the Oscars aren’t looking to heaven during their acceptance speeches — they’re looking at Steven Spielberg.

The renowned American film director is thanked more often during Oscars acceptance speeches than the Good Lord Almighty himself, Vocativ reports.

With the 87th Academy Awards slated to air on Sunday, Vocativ mined through 1,396 acceptance speeches currently archived on Academy’s website to measure who got the most “Thank Yous” from winners.

Spielberg came in at number one, with 42 mentions, followed by Harvey Weinstein, James Cameron, George Lucas, Peter Jackson. God came in at number six, with just 19 mentions.

It should be noted that a number of acceptance speeches from the earliest years of the awards haven’t yet been added to the Academy’s acceptance speech database. As a result, Vocativ’s survey isn’t conclusive.

Still, it seems the dream-come-true moment inspires many winners to give thanks to forces greater than themselves. Here are a few of the celebrities who gave God a thumbs up during their time in the spotlight.

Thank you very much, members of the Academy and Carl Bell. I know that my work in this case is magnified by the fact that the streets of heaven are too crowded with angels. We know their names. They number a thousand for each one of the red ribbons that we wear here tonight. They finally rest in the warm embrace of the gracious creator of us all. A healing embrace that cools their fevers, that clears their skin, and allows their eyes to see the simple, self-evident, common sense truth that is made manifest by the benevolent creator of us all and was written down on paper by wise men, tolerant men, in the city of Philadelphia two hundred years ago. God bless you all. God have mercy on us all. And God bless America.

This is, you know, it fills me with great joy, but I am also filled with a lot of sadness tonight because I’m accepting an award at such a strange time. And, you know, my experiences in making this film made me very aware of the sadness and the dehumanization of people at times of war, and the repercussions of war. And whomever you believe in, if it’s God or Allah, may He watch over you. And let’s pray for a peaceful and swift resolution.

Winner: Conrad L. Hall (accepted by his son, Conrad W. Hall)

Winner: Written by Dustin Lance Black
Year: 2008 (81st) Academy Awards
Category: Writing (Original Screenplay)
Film Title: Milk
Presenter: Steve Martin, Tina Fey
Date & Venue: February 22, 2009; Kodak Theatre

When I was thirteen years old, my beautiful mother and my father moved me from a conservative Mormon home in San Antonio, Texas, to California, and I heard the story of Harvey Milk. And it gave me hope. It gave me the hope to live my life. It gave me the hope one day I could live my life openly as who I am and that maybe even I could even fall in love and one day get married. I wanna, I wanna thank my mom, who has always loved me for who I am even when there was pressure not to. But most of all, if Harvey had not been taken from us thirty years ago, I think he’d want me to say to all of the gay and lesbian kids out there tonight who have been told that they are less than by their churches or by the government or by their families, that you are beautiful, wonderful creatures of value and that no matter what anyone tells you God does love you, and that very soon, I promise you, you will have equal rights, federally, across this great nation of ours. Thank you. Thank you. And thank you,God, for giving us Harvey Milk.

Winner: Oprah Winfrey
Year: 2011 (84th) Academy Awards
Category: Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award
Presenter: Lawrence Gordon, John Travolta, Maria Shriver, Ayanna Hall
Date & Venue: November 12, 2011; The Governors Awards (Grand Ballroom, Hollywood & Highland Center)

The first line of the book [The Color Purple] is, “Dear God, I’m fourteen years old…” And I had lived that life and couldn’t imagine that someone was able to put into words what I had already experienced. And so began this journey that I was able to really understand that God’s hand, or power greater than myself, “the forces,” as Sidney Poitier calls them, were engaged in leading my life to a plane and a level that I had not even imagined. But I released myself to those forces, and literally said inside myself, “Thy will be done.”

Winner: Matthew McConaughey
Year: 2013 (86th) Academy Awards
Category: Actor in a Leading Role
Film Title: Dallas Buyers Club
Presenter: Jennifer Lawrence
Date & Venue: March 2, 2014; Dolby Theatre

First off, I want to thank God, ’cause that’s who I look up to. He has graced my life with opportunities that I know are not of my hand or any other human hand. He has shown me that it’s a scientific fact that gratitude reciprocates. In the words of the late Charlie Laughton, who said, “When you’ve got God, you’ve got a friend. And that friend is you.”

Winner: Morgan Neville, Gil Friesen and Caitrin Rogers (Janet Friesen accepted for her husband; accompanied on stage by film subject Darlene Love)
Year: 2013 (86th) Academy Awards
Category: Documentary (Feature)
Film Title: 20 Feet from Stardom
Presenter: Bradley Cooper
Date & Venue: March 2, 2014; Dolby Theatre

Darlene Love: Lord God, I praise you and I am so happy to be here representing the ladies of “20 Feet from Stardom.” [Sings:] “I sing because I’m happy. I sing because I’m free. ‘Cause His eye is on the sparrow and I know He watches me.” Alton, I love you.

Built by Women: Winners in NYC

Women in the practice of architecture are on a roll.

First came the consciousness-raising, if not-quite-successful, 2013 petition to the Pritzker Prize Committee on behalf of Denise Scott-Brown.

Next: the 2014 AIA Gold Medal awarded posthumously to Julia Morgan, the gifted early 20th-century architect of Hearst Castle in San Simeon, Calif.

Now come the winners in the Built by Women competition, sponsored by the Beverly Willis Architecture Foundation in New York.

“We’ve been very fortunate with timing — there’s a momentum now, and a lot of people behind it,” says Nancy Nguyen, associate director at the foundation.

The numbers speak volumes. Out of 350 entries from five boroughs in New York City, 100 were named winners this week. They range from a transportation hub to a police training academy to parks and engineering projects.

“There was one that was nominated twice,” says Carol Shapiro, director of the foundation. “It was Gravesend, and it was founded in 1643 by Lady Deborah Moody.”

This was a competition that looked beyond design to the functional impact of what a project does for the audience occupying its space. Entries covered the fields of architecture, landscape architecture, engineering, and construction. In a number of cases, the projects were multi-disciplinary.

“It’s such an innovative field, so we wanted to celebrate the amazing women involved,” Shapiro says. “We’re trying to show that the field is incredibly collaborative.”

In the process, they’re also raising awareness about the impact of women on the built environment — to those already practicing, and to generations to come. And the competition is just the first step.

“There will be educational materials and panel discussions and walking tours,” Nguyen says. “We’re planning on putting all the nominations on a map and highlighting the winners.”

The rest of the nation is already on their radar screens. “It’s a template to be rolled out across the country,” Shapiro says. “Other cities are interested — over time, we’ll see a map of U.S. sites, designed by women.”

Certainly, the inventory is out there; it’s an appreciation for it that seems in short supply.

But that, too, could change, if this foundation has its way.

Spirit Award Winners 2014 Include ’12 Years A Slave,’ Matthew McConaughey

The 2014 Spirit Awards, Film Independent’s annual honors for the year in indie film, were handed out in Santa Monica, Calif. on Saturday, with “12 Years a Slave” emerging as the day’s big winner. Steve McQueen’s drama earned awards for Best Feature, Best Director (McQueen), Best Supporting Female (Lupita Nyong’o), Best Screenplay (John Ridley) and Best Cinematography (Sean Bobbitt).

“12 Years a Slave” received two other Spirit Award nominations: Best Lead Male for Chiwetel Ejiofor and Best Supporting Male for Michael Fassbender. Both of those categories were dominated by “Dallas Buyers Club,” as stars Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto, respectively, took the lead and supporting trophies.

The other acting winner at the Spirit Awards was Cate Blanchett, who won Best Lead Female for her role in “Blue Jasmine.” It’s expected that all four Spirit winners will repeat at Sunday’s Academy Award ceremony, which would mark the first time in the 29-year history of the independent film awards that its acting honors matched a perfect four for four with the Oscars.

Elsewhere at the Spirit Awards, Ryan Coogler’s “Fruitvale Station” won Best First Feature. “Fruitvale Station,” which debuted at last year’s Sundance Film Festival, is about the death of Oscar Grant, a black man who was shot by law enforcement officials at the Bay Area Rapid Transit station of the film’s title on New Year’s Day in 2009. During his acceptance speech, Coogler referenced the death of Jonathan Ferrell, who was shot 10 times by a police officer after crashing his car and going to seek help. “I can’t help but think if Jonathan Ferrell looked like Matthew McConaughey he would have been alive today,” Coogler said (via THR). The director was given a standing ovation after his acceptance speech.

National Book Award Winners 2013

The 2013 National Book Awards were held tonight. Awards were given in the categories of Fiction, Nonfiction, Young People’s Literature, and Poetry. The winners are:

Fiction: The Good Lord Bird by James McBride

Nonfiction: The Unwinding: An Inner History of the New America by George Packer

Young People’s Literature: The Thing About Luck by Cynthia Kadohata

Poetry: Incarnadine by Mary Szybist

Perhaps the most notable literary prize in America, the National Book Awards are in their 64th year. Past winners have included a few forgotten talents, but also many revered literary greats – Saul Bellow and William Faulkner, to name a few.

This year was the first time the National Book Foundation released both a long list and a short list of nominees. The short list for Fiction differed from those of recent years, in that it featured no debut authors.

Whether the awards accurately predict which books will catch fire with the American public has been a point of contention among writers. Critic James Wood called literary awards “the new reviews,” but Salon’s Laura Miller has called the National Book Awards “irrelevant.” The prominence of last year’s winners implies otherwise: Louise Erdrich took home the Fiction award for The Round House, and New Yorker veteran Katherine Boo, who’d previously won both a Pulitzer and a MacArthur Fellowship, snagged a win for her moving story of poverty in India, Behind the Beautiful Forevers.
