Adopted Woman Whose Family Thought She Was Dead Reunites with Siblings 60 Years Later: ‘I Feel Whole’

For decades, Sylvia Kewer’s family thought she was dead.

Kewer, who was adopted as a toddler, grew up in Emporia, Virginia, believing she was an only child. All of that changed in August when she learned she has four half-siblings.

“ was saying her whole life she didn’t know what she was. She kept saying, ‘What am I?’ ” Kewer’s daughter, Natalie Graves Tucker, tells PEOPLE.

“Here she is thinking she’s alone all these years and doesn’t know her story … She’s always been a loner and here she has four siblings with children and grandchildren!”

On Nov. 11, Kewer met her half-siblings (and dozens of other family members) at a sweet reunion in Abingdon. Tucker rented a home for the family where they had a cookout and shared old photographs.

“It was a culmination of pictures and conversations and emails that we’ve had with the family over the past few months. It was exciting,” Tucker says. “They just opened their arms with love and so it couldn’t have happened any better. I couldn’t have planned it any better.”

Kewer spent a day and half with her newfound siblings: Billy Ray, 63, Nancy Goode-O’Donnell, 69, Ralph Duff and Curtis Duff, 72.

Tucker says the reunion left her mother feeling loved, she recalls Kewer saying: “I feel whole, reborn, refreshed and stronger than ever.”

A Family Journey

The siblings’ reunion was months in the making, and it all began with a DNA test on Ancestry.com. Tucker and Kewer submitted tests and soon learned that their DNA matched that of several other people — including Ray’s son.

“When I told her that her brother wanted to FaceTime her, she was just like, ‘Oh my God! Oh my God!’ ” Tucker tells PEOPLE. “It’s just so amazing for her. She’s like there’s no longer a question mark. ‘I know who I am and I know what I am.’ ”

Tucker, Ray and Kewer began communicating and, over the next few months, Tucker says she received Facebook messages from cousins, nieces, nephews and more, all eager to attend the cookout Tucker had planned for the family’s reunion.

As the family met and exchanged stories at the rental home from Crooked Cabin Properties, they began to piece together Kewer’s story.

Many of the siblings went their separate ways as children, one was raised by a grandmother, another by their father, and others were adopted. Kewer’s four half-siblings had long known about each other, and reunited at their mother’s funeral in the ’80s.

However, Kewer, born Dorothy Mae Goode, was the mystery.

“Billy found and everybody kept saying, ‘I guess Dorothy was dead,” Tucker tells PEOPLE. “My mom only remembers an orphanage and she remembers my grandparents coming to get her.”

A Fresh Start

Now that Kewer has found her family, she never plans to let them go. Tucker says the siblings exchanged phone numbers, noting that Kewer talks to her half-sister Nancy almost every day.

“There is talk about having another get together next year in the spring or the summer,” Tucker tells PEOPLE. “Everybody wants to get together next year.”

Sneak Peek of Family Portrait: Ben & Daniel’s Road to Adoption

She adds of her mother: “Now that she has everybody’s information, she definitely plans to connect with everybody.”

With the reunion, Tucker says a special bond was formed between Kewer and Nancy.

“Her and her sister just stuck together like glue when they were there,” Tucker tells PEOPLE.

Woman Who Sabotaged Fiancé’s Kayak Sentenced to 4 Years — But Could Be Released Next Month

Angelika Graswald, the New York woman who pleaded guilty to criminally negligent homicide in the drowning death of her fiancé as they kayaked on the Hudson River in 2015, was sentenced Wednesday to 15 months to four years in state prison, her attorney confirms to PEOPLE.

Graswald had faced murder charges in the death of Vincent Viafore, 46, but pleaded guilty to the lesser charge in July.

Graswald’s attorney, Richard Portale, previously told PEOPLE he expects her to be home as early as next month due to time served since her arrest in April of 2015.

At the sentencing, Viafore’s sister, Laura Rice, told Judge Robert Freehill that she thinks of her brother’s “last moments alive…and I visualize him trying to survive hypothermia in the freezing cold river, confused and not understanding why the woman who said she loved him and wanted to marry him did nothing to help him,” reports the Poughkeepsie Journal

Viafore drowned on April 19, 2015 in the Hudson River after his kayak capsized in rough seas and windy conditions. He and Graswald were kayaking back to the mainland from an afternoon on Bannerman Island, an island in the Hudson River in Dutchess County.

Ten days later, Graswald was charged with second-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter after police said she told them she removed a plug from the kayak to destabilize it and had taken a connector off the paddle.

Once Viafore was in the river, prosecutors said Graswald pulled Viafore’s paddle away from him as he fought for his life, then waited until he had drowned before calling 911.

The motive was $ 250,000 in life insurance policies, prosecutors said.

In her plea deal to the reduced charges, Graswald admitted she knew that the locking clip to Viaforte’s kayak paddle was missing, that he was not wearing a life vest or a wet suit, and that the waters in the Hudson River were dangerously cold and rough at the time.

But it was Graswald’s lack of urgency in seeking help for Viafore after he entered the freezing April waters that Judge Freehill said led to Viafore’s death.

“It was the immediate act of your being in your kayak and Vincent floundering in the water, and you taking no action to help him,” Freehill said, according to the Times-Herald Record.

Graswald has long maintained her innocence regarding the murder charges. In a statement her attorney released after the sentencing hearing, Graswald said: “I am not a murderer. I’ve said that from the beginning. If I could do anything to bring Vince back, I would.”

Graswald is a native of Latvia, and Viafore’s family wants Graswald deported after she finishes her sentence — a sentence they feel is far too short, the Poughkeepsie Journal reports.

In an interview with reporters after the hearing, Viafore’s mother, Mary Ann Viafore, told reporters that “justice was not served for my son. Four years for taking someone’s life? No way.”

Sam Smith Opens Up on Gender-Fluid Identity: ‘I Feel Just as Much a Woman as I Am a Man’

Sam Smith doesn’t need labels.

In a candid interview with The Sunday Times, the English singer opened up his gender identity, saying he doesn’t consider himself a cisgender man.

“I don’t know what the title would be, but I feel just as much woman as I am man,” he elaborated.

Smith explained that he likes dressing in drag, revealing that he hits up the Australian drag shop House of Priscilla whenever he’s in Sydney, Australia.

“Oh, my god, I just buy everything — heels, dresses,” he said. “We have a great time.”

And this habit is nothing new. The 25-year-old crooner said he used to head to school in women’s clothing as a teen.

“There was one moment in my life where I didn’t own a piece of male clothing, really,” he said. “I would wear full make-up every day in school, eyelashes, leggings with Dr. Martens and huge fur coats, for 2 ½ years.”

Smith also opened up about coming out as gay, saying, “Looking back on it, it was the fear of saying the wrong thing and offending … And I was 19 when I started writing the first album. I’d just moved to London from a village — I was literally the only gay in the village. I didn’t know what I wanted to say.”

The singer also teased fans with a hint of what his new album Thrill of It All, dropping on Nov. 3, holds.

“I think they show my growth, my confidence. I feel like they show me,” he said. “They show the gay guy I’ve become.”

Earlier this month, Smith attended a performance of the Broadway hit Dear Evan Hansen — and rumored new boyfriend Brandon Flynn was also there.

His theater outing comes after he was pictured kissing and holding hands with the 13 Reasons Why star while out in Greenwich Village earlier in the day.

Texas Woman Allegedly Shot Her Sleeping Boyfriend and Dismembered His Body While Daughter Was Nearby

A Texas woman is accused of shooting her boyfriend in the head while he was sleeping and then dismembering his body and tossing the remains in area dumpsters, PEOPLE confirms.

Cierra Alexis Sutton, 30, was arrested Thursday in connection with the Aug. 16 slaying of 32-year-old Steven Coleman and is charged with murder.

She is in custody in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, pending extradition back to Harris County, Texas. She has not entered a plea and it is unclear if she has retained an attorney.

Sutton’s friends reportedly claimed to police that she confessed to shooting Coleman in the head while he was sleeping in their Baytown, Texas, apartment after which she cut him up into pieces with a machete, wrapped up his body parts in sheets and duct tape and disposed of them.

Six days after the slaying, police discovered the pelvis of a man — from mid-thigh to belly button — in a local landfill but are still waiting for DNA results. “We don’t know definitely if it is our guy yet,” Baytown police Lt. Steve Dorris tells PEOPLE. “But it is safe to say it is our suspicion.”

Sutton’s arrest has shocked at least one of the couple’s neighbors. “There’s always been smiles, talk, no signs of anything that would indicate something like this,” Donald Wooten told local TV station KHOU.

The case came to light after Sutton filed a missing persons report on Aug. 18, two days after the killing. Sutton told police that she’d last seen Coleman, an aspiring rapper, around 10:30 p.m. on Aug. 16, when he left home to find his daughter, according to a probable cause statement obtained by PEOPLE.

Coleman’s two cars were still at the Briarwood Village Apartments, she allegedly told police.

But a friend told police that she spoke to Coleman on the day he disappeared and he’d said was going to stop by her house — though he never showed up. The same friend said that Coleman mentioned on numerous occasions that “if he was ever to go missing she needed to make sure the police looked into as the cause,” according to the probable cause statement.

• Want to keep up with the latest crime coverage? Click here to get breaking crime news, ongoing trial coverage and details of intriguing unsolved cases in the True Crime Newsletter.

The probable cause statement notes that, the day after the homicide, a woman matching Sutton’s description used Coleman’s credit card to buy a memory foam bed-topper and a package of duct tape from Wal-Mart.

On Aug. 24, police executed a search warrant on the couple’s one-bedroom apartment and found traces of blood on the floor next to the bed as well as on a bed sheet, on the bathroom floor and sink and in the kitchen.

As the investigation continued, police tried to interview Sutton but she disappeared.

“Shortly after she reported him missing, we called her to do an interview and she didn’t show up for that and fell off the grid and wouldn’t call us back,” says Lt. Dorris. “That was a red flag for us.”

• PEOPLE’s special edition True Crime Stories: 35 Real Cases That Inspired the Show Law & Order is on sale now.

Police caught a break after they received a call from a tipster who told them that Sutton had allegedly confessed to Sutton’s brother’s girlfriend. The girlfriend told detectives that Sutton showed up at their house in Louisiana in early September after Hurricane Harvey.

Sutton allegedly admitted to putting the wrapped-up body parts of her boyfriend in her Jeep and taking them to different trash dumpsters.

Sutton’s best friend also told police that Sutton called her the morning after the alleged shooting and confessed that she had been arguing with Coleman and shot him while her 10-year-old daughter Trinity was in the living room.

Interviewed after her arrest, Sutton showed “no emotion, no remorse,” Dorris says. “She indicated she was present when it happened.”

Sutton allegedly told her friend she cut Coleman’s body up after killing him because she couldn’t carry him — he was too heavy in one piece.

Rachel Lindsay & Bryan Abasolo on Their Interracial Relationship: ‘Love Is Blind — We’re Just a Man & Woman in Love’

Even before her journey on The Bachelorette began, Rachel Lindsay made a personal commitment to stay true to her heart.

As the first black lead in Bachelor Nation history, Lindsay admittedly felt the pressure to choose a black man from her pool of contestants.

“It wasn’t always easy. It wasn’t. But I had to not let the pressure get to me,” Lindsay, 32, tells PEOPLE in this week’s issue. “I had to rise above it to find my happy ending at the end of all of this.”

“I knew that people would be watching myself in this role for the first time, and there would be people who were positive and people who were negative, and I would feel pressure from certain audiences that would say you ‘had to pick a black man.’ And then I would have other audiences that didn’t care about that,” Lindsay shares.

“But for me, before I said yes to being the Bachelorette I had to get over . I had to realize that not everyone was going to be for me when it came to the decisions that I make. Not everyone was going to be happy about my decisions, but I needed to be selfish in this journey and find the one who was perfect for me,” Lindsay explains. “I couldn’t make a decision based on anyone else because I’m the one who’s going to have to live with it.”

And new fiancé Bryan Abasolo couldn’t be prouder of how the Dallas-born lawyer portrayed herself on the show. “Such strength, class and grace,” says Abasolo, who got down on one knee and proposed to Lindsay on Monday night’s season 13 finale.

For more on Bachelorette Rachel Lindsay’s engagement to Bryan Abasolo, including their thoughts on their big debut and plan for the future, pick up this week’s issue of PEOPLE, on newsstands Friday

Reflecting on their romance, the newly engaged couple says that race never played a factor in them falling in love.

“Love is blind,” says Miami-based chiropractor Abasolo.

“I’m not going to pick somebody because they look a certain way. I could’ve done that without doing the show. I really put my all in this because I was trying to find that one for me. I was trying to find my person — the person who I want to spend the rest of my life with — and I can’t let color dictate that,” says Lindsay. ”

“I can’t be blindsided by the fact that I have to choose this person because they look the same way that I do. That’s not fair. That’s not what love is about. That doesn’t define love. It’s not my definition of love,” she continues. “My definition of love is sitting right next to me. So it was really important for me to not do that. Everything else was background noise and I was just zeroed in on finding that person for me.”

Now that the couple no longer has to keep their engagement under wraps, and will now be able spend time with one another in public, they realize their lives will be propelled into spotlight.

Still, they’re not intimidated about being in a high-profile interracial relationship — or any criticism that may result from others’ biases.

“Honestly, we don’t even think about it or talk about it. I mean, we’re just a man and a woman in love. We just want to enjoy life,” Abasolo shares. “I just think we’re two mature adults, that we can handle anything moving forward. Communication is a big key.”

Adds Lindsay, “I think we’re both strong enough to rise above whatever criticism we may face by being an interracial couple. But between the two of us, we had those tough questions during the season. I know that he is capable of handling it, as am I. For us, we just love each other.”

Woman Who Accused Bill Cosby of Sexually Assaulting Her at Playboy Mansion Arrested on Heroin Charges

A woman who accused Bill Cosby of sexually assaulting her in 2008 was arrested on Sunday after allegedly bringing heroin to a California jail, reports say.

Chloe Goins, 27, faces charges of possessing a controlled substance and bringing alcohol or drugs in prison after police allegedly found her outside the George F. Bailey Detention Center in Otay Mesa with a drug believed to be heroin in her car, The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.

She was booked into the Las Colinas Detention and Reentry Facility on $ 25,000 bail, according to NBC San Diego. It wasn’t immediately clear if she has entered a plea or retained an attorney.

Goins was parked outside the jail that night when a deputy approached her about an alleged vehicle violation, a police spokesman told the Associated Press.

It is unclear Goins went into the buildings with the drugs police allege she had, the official said.

Judge Declares Mistrial in Bill Cosby Sexual Assault Case After Jury Says They Are ‘Hopelessly Deadlocked’

The model alleged that Cosby drugged and sexually assaulted her at a Playboy Mansion party in 2008 when she was 18. She claimed she felt dizzy and sick to her stomach after Cosby allegedly gave her a drink. She alleged the embattled comedian escorted her to a room where she lost consciousness before waking up with her clothes off to find Cosby biting one of her toes.

• Want to keep up with the latest crime coverage? Click here to get breaking crime news, ongoing trial coverage and details of intriguing unsolved cases in the True Crime Newsletter.

Cosby denied the allegations. Goins ultimately dropped her civil suit against him.

Goins was just one of dozens of women who accused Cosby of sexual misconduct; Cosby has denied all the allegations. He stood trial earlier this year after being accused of drugging and sexually assaulting former Temple University employee Andrea Constand at his Elkins Park, Pennsylvania, mansion in January 2004.

In June, a Pennsylvania judge granted a mistrial after the jury had announced that they were “hopelessly deadlocked” for the second time in the trial — the first trial ended with a hung jury.

A judge has since scheduled a retrial to begin on Nov. 6.

3 Kids Shot, 1 Woman Killed at Gender Reveal Party in Ohio: ‘They Just Ran in and Started Shooting’

Three children were hospitalized in Ohio Saturday night after a shooter allegedly opened fire on a gender reveal party in Cincinnati, killing one woman and injuring nine total, according to multiple reports.

Police arrived at the home on Capstan Drive at around 11:20 p.m. to find a woman dead on the floor, the Cincinnatti Enquirer reports. The children were taken to a local hospital with non life-threatening injuries. Of the remaining injured, only one was in serious condition, police told the Enquirer.

“Two guys just came in and shot people in the house,” a woman outside the home at the time told a dispatcher during a frantic 911 call, according to WCPO.

“There was little kids hurt and everything. I was sitting in my car. They just ran in and started shooting. There’s a pregnant girl here.”

Although there is no one in custody, police said 911 calls and radio logs indicate that there may have been two shooters, WCPO reports.

Both suspected shooters, donning hooded sweatshirts, fled the scene, another witness reportedly told police, according to WCPO.

All of the victims were family and friends gathered for the party, police told WLWT. Officials have not released the names of the victims.

“As of right now, I do not know what instigated this,” Jim Love, with Colerain police, told WLWT. “I do not know how this got started.”

Colerain Township Police did not immediately respond to a request for comment from PEOPLE.

Transgender Woman Asks the Botched Doctors to Fix Her Silicone Cheek Implants

As a transgender woman, Shauna Brooks was willing to undergo any plastic surgery to look more feminine — even from questionable sources. But now with cheek implants gone wrong, she needs the Botched doctors’ help.

Brooks says she had silicone injected into her cheeks to keep up with societal standards.

“When I was 14 years old, I started a black market hormone therapy. In the black urban community, the transgenders get silicone pumped in their cheeks, in their breasts and their ass,” Brooks tells Drs. Terry Dubrow and Paul Nassif in this exclusive clip from Sunday’s episode.

But when she went back to the doctors to have them reshape her face, Brooks found out that she can’t have further surgery because of the silicone.

“Then I learned about facial feminization and I wanted to do it here in America. And when I told the doctors I had silicone in my face, he said no. That’s when I went to Thailand, and the doctors said, ‘I will saw your cheekbone,’ ” Brooks explains.

“Whoa, whoa, whoa. That’s another dangerous procedure,” Dr. Dubrow cuts in. “There are so many good plastic surgeons in this country, and medicine generally is the safest that it can be anywhere in the world. So you should never go outside the United States for any surgical procedure.”

Plus, Dr. Nassif explains, the silicone likely caused permanent damage.

“Injecting anything permanent into any part of your body is a bad thing. Injecting silicone destroys the underlying tissue by causing a severe inflammatory response and becomes a chronic problem,” he says.

But Brooks says she needs some solution, as she’s experiencing problems with one of her cheek implants.

“As the year went on, this right cheek just would not stop . I think it’s too big,” she says. “When I smile, I think it’s just too big.”

Dr. Dubrow says it may be too hazardous to correct.

“We always wonder — at what cost, if we go in there,” he tells Brooks. “If there’s a hole here, right through bone of the skull, where important sensory nerve comes out, if you bugger up that nerve you can’t move. It’s dead, and there’s no going back.”

Find out what Brooks and the doctors decide on the next episode of Botched, airing Sunday at 9/8 p.m. on E!

This Woman Was Kicked Out Of A Mall For Wearing Shorts And A Tank Top

A woman in Grand Rapids, Mi. said she was recently kicked out of a shopping mall because another customer complained to mall security about her outfit.

The outfit in question? Shorts and a tank top.

Hannah Pewee posted a photo of her outfit on Facebook after being kicked out of Grand Rapids’ Woodland Mall on Saturday. In the photo, she wears what any woman might wear on a 90-degree day in June: a “Finding Nemo” tank top, jean shorts, and ballet flats.

“As many of you know, it is NINETY degrees outside today in West Michigan,” Pewee wrote in the Facebook post.

“So, of course, I decided to dress for the weather: shorts and a tank top. But apparently, how I was dressed … was too slutty for the public, as I was kicked out of the Woodland Mall today. Yup. Apparently some anonymous person reported me to MALL SECURITY for inappropriate dress and I was kicked out.”

Pewee’s post went viral over the weekend, with more than 4,000 likes and close to 9,000 shares. She said in the post that experience was so humiliating she “almost cried.”

“I am so angry right now I’m shaking,” she wrote. “I felt so embarrassed I almost cried. All because a stranger didn’t like how I dressed.

Pewee wrote two follow-up Facebook posts after the initial incident. First, she thanked the Facebook community for their support and kind words, and in the second, she confirmed that a manager from Woodland Mall called her to apologize.

“So I talked on the phone with the someone on the management team at Woodland and they apologized for what happened yesterday,” she wrote. “Apparently they’re going to revise their clothing policy on their website so it is clearer what is and isn’t acceptable. In addition, security will be discussing how to properly handle situations like this.”

The Woodland Mall website policy page currently has vague language about what clothing constitutes as “inappropriate.”

WATCH: Ariana Grande Reprises ‘Somewhere Over the Rainbow’ as She Resumes Dangerous Woman Tour

Ariana Grande‘s inspiring cover of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” has become a permanent part of the singers’ Dangerous Woman tour, which resumed on Wednesday night in Paris — more than two weeks after it was suspended following the deadly Manchester terrorist attack.

The 23-year-old star took the stage at the AccorHotels Arena for a high-energy return, making her way through hits like “Problem,” “Side to Side,” and “Break Free” — with boyfriend Mac Miller even joining her for “One Last Time.”

But towards the end of her show, she stripped away much of the stage theatrics to perform the emotional “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” — smoking filling the stage and the logo to her One Love Manchester benefit concert (a ribbon with the singer’s signature bunny ears on top) simply behind her.

The crowd appeared to be equally moved by the song on Wednesday as they were at Sunday’s One Love Manchester concert, where she first premiered the cover of the Wizard of Oz tune.

The star-studded charity concert in Manchester was held in honor of the 22 people who were killed and more than 100 who were injured on May 22 after a suicide bomber detonated an improvised explosive device minutes after her concert ended.

Performers from Pharrell Williams, Miley Cyrus, Justin Bieber, Niall Horan, Robbie Williams, the Black Eyed Peas, Marcus Mumford and Katy Perry joined Grande to raise $ 13 million for those affected.

A live recording of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” captured at One Love Manchester has been released on multiple streaming platforms as a charity single, with all proceeds going to Manchester victims. The singer also released a 39-song One Love Manchester album, now available on Apple Music, Spotify, Tidal and etc.

Adding the track into her set for the remainder of Grande’s tour is just one of the ways she’s continuing to honor the victims of the attack. On Wednesday before her show, the singer instagrammed a message to fans saying that she’d be “thinking of our angels every step of the way.”

After the concert, she captioned a photo of herself performing, “Merci, Paris Je t’aime. Grateful to be back.”

Grande’s Dangerous Woman tour was originally postponed to “further assess the situation and pay proper respects to those lost,” the singer’s management previously told PEOPLE in a statement.

Continued tour stops are scheduled throughout Europe for Grande in June, with South America following in July and Japan and Australia among set destinations in August.

Chris Hemsworth Has No Doubt Wonder Woman Would ‘Kick Thor’s Ass’

With a record-breaking opening weekend and stellar reviews, Wonder Woman is certainly having a moment. And while some men nationwide are having temper tantrums about women-only screenings of the female-led film, other men are totally aware of how fantastic the film, and its leading lady, really are. So, who’s the newest dude to hop on the Wonder Woman train? None other than the one who plays Marvel Comics’ Thor, Chris Hemsworth.

Wonder Woman’s lead actress Gal Gadot paid a visit to Katie Couric, and used the opportunity to call out Hemsworth and ask him if he thinks her Wonder Woman would win a fight against his Thor. (Check it out in the video below.)

Hemsworth responded accordingly on Twitter, saying that he thinks Wonder Woman would, in fact, “kick Thor’s a**.”

And the conversation didn’t stop there. Couric agreed and Gadot followed up, saying she “always knew” Hemsworth was a “smart guy,” and suggesting that their two worlds ought to collide.

We’ll be waiting with the popcorn.

Fox News Mulls Over Whether Wonder Woman Is ‘American’ Enough

As “Wonder Woman” garners stellar ratings and remains on track for a record-breaking opening weekend, a Fox News panel is conducting a deep dive into a critical matter: Is the Amazonian princess American enough?

Fox host Neil Cavuto noted on Friday to guest Dion Baia that “some” have been taking issue with the film’s alleged lack of patriotism — chiefly, that the superhero’s costume color scheme is too un-American.

“Some are calling it less American, Dion, because, well, her outfit isn’t red, white, and blue, and, in order to appeal for foreign audiences, very little reference to America at all,” said the “Your World With Neil Cavuto” host.

“I think, nowadays, sadly, money trumps patriotism,” Baia replied. “Especially, recently, I personally feel like we’re not really very patriotic, the country, in a certain sense. And they want these movies to succeed internationally, you know, so they’re going to dial back.”

Fellow guest Mike Gunzelman lamented that he feels “it’s cool to hate America these days.”

Baia, for his part, said his comments have been misconstrued. “Taken outta context much?” he tweeted Saturday, referencing an Entertainment Weekly article that characterized him as being “upset” with the movie (probably because he used the word “sadly.”)

He maintained he was simply explaining why he believes the movie’s American patriotism was “toned down.”

But in any case, criticism of Gadot’s costume as not looking “American” is a little weak.

A red, blue and gold color combination is still fairly reminiscent of the American flag. Gold is often incorporated into patriotic decorations and accessories, and sometimes used in place of white.

The original comic and Lynda Carter’s iconic Wonder Woman costume from the 1970s TV series both included more gold than white.

Yes, Gadot’s Wonder Woman is not wearing a bottom piece adorned with little white stars, but she is wearing a top with an emblem of an eagle, which is, you know, a major symbol for the United States.

Plus, the actual plot of the movie involves Wonder Woman teaming up with an American pilot to stop German forces, which makes equating it with “hating America” a bit of a stretch.

Whatever. There have been worse takes on the movie.

‘Wonder Woman’ Trolls Its Male Killjoys With Poise And Wit

Men on the internet will leave no female-fronted blockbuster unturned. Until a few days ago, the fervor surrounding “Wonder Woman,” which opens this weekend after two decades of false starts and personnel changes, felt tame on the grown-males-whining front. As long as Wonder Woman isn’t busting ghosts, she’ll be fine. Unless, of course, a theater announces no-boys-allowed screenings. Then it’s war.

It seems the folks responsible for “Wonder Woman” anticipated a macho tussle somewhere along the movie’s Amazonian journey to the big screen. After all, the internet provides well-trod platforms for fanboys ― and I do mean boys ― who are hyper-reactive to any feminine updates to their childhood staples. Wonder Woman, as an entity, should have been bulletproof, considering the strong-willed heroine dates back to her 1941 DC Comics debut, which spawned multiple animated adaptations and the popular 1970s television series starring Lynda Carter. Oh, we of little faith. Patty Jenkins, the first woman to direct a major superhero movie, and screenwriter Allan Heinberg surely foresaw the same juvenile gender divide that haunts the Hollywood franchise machine. Never devolving into a didactic sermon about feminism, “Wonder Woman” chides its male mudslingers with humor and grace.

Once the titular Amazon princess (Gal Gadot), known colloquially as Diana Prince, leaves her remote island to join Army captain Steve Trevor (Chris Pine) on World War I’s virile London battleground, her self-empowering seclusion clashes with the modern metropolis’ heteronormative standards. (Mind you, this comes after Diana and her fleet massacre the German soldiers who’ve washed ashore with Steve.) Having grown up surrounded only by warrior women, Diana carries no baggage about how she should behave in relation to male acquaintances. As she and Steve set sail, he says it’s only appropriate that he sleep in separate quarters of the boat. Diana can’t understand why it should matter ― temptation is of no concern to her, even as their chemistry simmers. Steve assumes this means she is unschooled in carnal matters, but oh no: Diana knows all about “reproductive biology” and “pleasures of the flesh,” having read “all 12 volumes of Cleo’s treatises on body and pleasure.” This yields her fiercest conclusion about the weaker sex: Men are essential for procreation but expendable in matters of bliss, erotic or otherwise.

Without devaluing its penis-toting characters, “Wonder Woman” continues this soft battle of the sexes across its 2.5-hour runtime. Diana becomes our surrogate for a world where women don’t even entertain the expectations of men. When she’s introduced to Steve’s “secretary,” the plucky Etta Candy (Lucy Davis), whose duties entail whatever Steve asks of her, Diana likens the role to slavery. During her plot to stop the god Ares from wreaking more wartime havoc, Diana scolds a pompous general for not fighting alongside his troops, like the matrons of her native Themyscira would. At every turn, dudes inform her that circumstances are too “dangerous.” Nevertheless, she persists, aided by her signature Lasso of Truth, god-killing sword and bullet-shielding bracelets. When Diana is prepared to execute the man she thinks is Ares, Steve tells her, “I can’t let you do that.” “What I do is not up to you,” she counters. She doesn’t need textbook feminism because she’d never conceptualized a pretense where men were superior in the first place. In Diana’s universe, an all-women movie screening would be another ordinary night out.

By the time Diana disrobes to reveal her tightly cropped Wonder Woman suit in all its glory, it is an act of power. She runs circles around the boys who tell her they “can’t save everyone in this war.” It comes as no surprise that the woman in “Wonder Woman” remains the victor, but Jenkins and Heinberg effectively pepper the movie with a winking sense of humor about the number of gents who doubt Diana’s facilities. Gadot and Pine are in on the joke too, tempering their performances so gamely that “Wonder Woman” almost becomes a buddy comedy. The final 20 minutes disintegrate into the same noisy CGI spectacle that concludes all comic-book movies, but this particular superhero outing is judicious and charming enough to rise above its genre hurdles.

Whether the angry internet men-children will skip “Wonder Woman” because of the Alamo Drafthouse screening or any other gender-related nonsense ― well, who cares, really. Advance tracking for the movie’s opening weekend indicates heftier interest among male moviegoers than female moviegoers, according to The Hollywood Reporter, so the sound and fury will likely amount to little. Jenkins, who is best known for the Charlize Theron vehicle “Monster,” isn’t trying to prove anything other than her (already proven) ability to make a quality movie. On that front, she has succeeded. For added kicks, she also trolled the men who would doubt her along the way. Wonderful, woman.

“Wonder Woman” opens June 2.

The First ‘Wonder Woman’ Reactions Are Everything You Hoped For

This is a super-powered relief.

Following the critical failures of “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” and “Suicide Squad,” things weren’t looking good for the next installment in the DC Extended Universe, “Wonder Woman.”

Yeah, the trailers looked great, but remember how beloved the “Suicide Squad” trailer was? A lackluster movie can ruin a great trailer pretty fast. Claims from a supposed insider that the “Wonder Woman” movie was a “mess,” which director Patty Jenkins refuted, also didn’t help things.

But according to the initial social media reactions, Jenkins was right.

(Brush those haters off.)

“Wonder Woman” won’t be out for a couple more weeks, but critics’ first reactions to the movie are in, and they’re “fantastic.” They’ve called the movie “surprisingly good,” “absolutely empowering” and recounted stories of young girls at the screening emphatically saying, “YES!” (Aw!)

Wonder Woman herself, actress Gal Gadot, is also earning a lot of praise, being called a “legit movie star” and “perfect” in the role.

These reactions are a big win for fans of the comic character, for Warner Bros. and for young kids who can soon see a female superhero do what the guys recently couldn’t: kick butt and make a great DC movie.

See the reactions below:

Woman Takes Engagement Photos With Her One True Love: Popeyes Chicken

When it comes to being engaged, Elyse Chelsea Clark is throwing caution to the wind, er, wing.

The New Orleans bartender is such a fan of Popeyes Chicken that she decided to do a series of engagement photos with her favorite fast food.

Then she posted the poultry-centered pics on Facebook with this note: “I’m finally engaged!”

The Popeyes engagement pics taken by photographer Whitney Tucker show Clark looking romantically at chicken boxes…

Strolling through the park with the object of her affection …

And smooching that box with the same passion that is typically reserved for love’s kiss.

Oh, and she likes the biscuits too.

The photos might be funny, but Clark’s passion for Popeyes is real and true.

“I have a really big love for Popeyes,” she told the New Orleans Times-Picayne. “I eat it all the time.”

The chain responded to Clark’s engagement spread with this tweet.

How Solange Handles The Pressure Of Having To Be A ‘Strong Woman’

Solange Knowles is just as human as the rest of us.

In a Q&A with Cosmopolitan at a Coachella event this week, the Grammy-winning artist opened up about how even she feels the pressure that many women do in constantly having to be a “strong woman.”

“We as women face a lot of challenges on a daily basis,” she said. “We have to stand firm in our walk and our intentions — but there are absolutely times when that weight feels too heavy, feels like a load that I just can’t bear that day.”

And like the rest of us, she’s had to find her own way of dealing with that burden.

Her solution? Art.

“I try to work through that in my…art, whatever medium that might be,” she said.

“My live performance [which is going down in museums and festivals across the country] is based around the color red, and all the things that communicates as a woman to the world — fiery, really vocal, present, almost a kind of stubborn color — and redefining it as being very complex…Being able to express that complexity, [I’m getting] a lot better at that the older I’ve gotten.”

Fiery, vocal, present, and stubborn? Sounds good to us.

Florida Woman Took Photo with Slain Police Officer Just Minutes Before He Died in London Attack

A Florida mother vacationing in London snapped a picture with police officer Keith Palmer just minutes before he was killed in Wednesday’s terror attack on Parliament.

Staci Martin said she was visiting London for the first time over spring break when she stumbled upon the 48-year-old officer wearing a “funny hat,” she told WPTV.

“I see his hat and I’m like, ‘I have to take a picture of him with his hat,” she told the station, noting that the attacks occurred less than an hour after the photo was taken. “We got in an Uber not even 15 seconds later, we turned to the corner and this guy came up to the window and was like, ‘there was a shooting, there was a shooting.”

Palmer was among four victims killed in the deadly car and knife attack outside U.K. Parliament. The assailant — identified by Scotland Yard as U.K. native Khalid Masood — careened through the area at about 2:40 p.m. local time, hitting dozens of pedestrians before crashing into the gate outside the Palace of Westminster.

He got out of the vehicle and stabbed Palmer before being killed by guards, authorities said. Scotland Yard is calling the incident terrorism.

Martin said she saw Palmer’s picture in media after the attack and couldn’t believe her eyes.

“They put his picture up and I said, ‘I think that’s the guy’ and my husband and daughter thought I was crazy,” she told WPTV. “We just couldn’t believe it.”

In the photo, Martin is shown smiling wide while Palmer, who appeared to be on duty at the time, gave a small smirk.

She wrote of the photo in a Facebook post, according to WFTS.

“At 1:52 p.m., we were walking passed Parliament and I saw an officer. I liked his funny hat so I asked him if we could take a picture … He was very polite,” she wrote.

“At 2:40 he was fatally stabbed by the terrorist and died leaving behind a wife and children.”

In the wake of the incident, authorities arrested eight people in raids around Britain, according to CNN. Their connection to the attack was not immediately clear.

Martin told WFTS that she is shocked by the timing of the events.

“You think if I had only been there a half an hour later in the exact spot,” she said. “You can call it God or fate or whatever you want to call it, it’s a little bit surreal for sure.”

Brie Larson To Play First Woman To Run For President

Brie Larson is making history.

The Oscar-winning actress will reportedly play Victoria Woodhull, the United States’ first female presidential candidate, in a biopic of the same name.

Amazon Studios acquired the film project on which Larson will also serve as a producer, Deadline reported Wednesday.

Woodhull ran for presidency on the Equal Rights Party ticket in 1872, decades before women could even vote, according to Biography.com. A suffragette who fought for women’s rights on many fronts, Woodhull also published a journal with her sister to promote social reform and founded the first woman-run stock brokerage.

Larson, 27, has publicly advocated for women’s rights as her film career has blossomed.

She previously portrayed female empowerment in a different mode as a kidnapping and rape survivor in 2015’s “Room,” which won her a best actress Academy Award. She enjoyed box office success this year in “Kong: Skull Island.”

The Hollywood Reporter noted that Larson is also set to play Captain Marvel in a 2019 Disney and Marvel movie.

Actress Gal Gadot shared the trailer on Twitter over the weekend and, according to Trailer Track, this may be the last one we’ll see before the movie debuts this summer.

All Woman Project’s New Campaign Takes Diversity To The Next Level

Charli Howard and Clementine Desseaux, the model powerhouse duo behind the body-positive All Woman Project, are back and better than ever with a new range of absolutely stunning imagery that proves beauty is not seen in just one size, age or race.

Howard, who was dropped from her modeling agency in 2015, has become a leader in the conversation surrounding inclusivity ever since. She launched the campaign with Desseaux back in September 2016 by way of a diverse, super sexy editorial featuring models of all different shapes, sizes and skin tones.

The second installment of the project teams up with Aerie, a brand known to advocate for inclusivity. Desseaux explained to The Huffington Post that the new series, featuring an even wider range of women, is “a whole new ballgame.”

“We took our imagery to another level and wanted to mix all the codes so they can finally blur and not be limited by what people expect from a body-positive campaign. We included diversity in a whole new way, from milky tones to ebony ones and teenage skins to mature ones. Our team is still all women but those women are real everyday heroes with some amazing stories to tell.”

Howard, Desseaux and Lawrence once again star in the images and are joined by the likes of a surfer, a fitness expert and a professor.

Calling the second installment proof that this is a “more permanent” effort rather than a “trend,” Desseaux also announced that All Woman Project has become a charity so it can “do more than only releasing diverse images. Now, we’re going to go out to schools with some of our team members from both campaigns and make a real change for girls, locally, where it’s the most needed.”

Sounds like there is still so much more to come from this rad, body-positive campaign, and we can’t wait to see what’s next.

California Woman Inspires Teens All Over the World to Perform Acts of Kindness

Even though she had a privileged childhood, Gaby Ghorbani never got numb to the poverty surrounding her as a child growing up in Guadalajara, Mexico as she witnessed children begging or selling gum on the streets to put food on their tables.

“I would always give food away and when I got my driver’s license, I would see kids on the corner and I would ask “Are you hungry? Where is your Mommy?’ ” Ghorbani, 46, tells PEOPLE. “And they would say ‘Yes, I’m hungry. But I don’t know.’

” I would take them in my car to get something to eat and then drop them back off on the corner,” she says. “When I got caught, I got in so much trouble. My mother would get mad and say, ‘You can’t do that!’ And she would tell me I couldn’t help every one, so why even try?”

Undeterred, that drive to help others never abated, and when she immigrated to the United States when she was about 18, she began planting the seeds for  Pledge to Humanity, an organization she founded in 2009 that inspires youths to make a difference both locally and globally. Groups are formed through schools, sport clubs and service organizations and perform acts of kindness.

Thousands of students have participated in the program. She works with kids to make sandwiches to donate to shelters, takes kids to spend time with the elderly or severely disable children and she organizes them to assemble and collect hundreds of care packages for veterans and the homeless. The projects are seemingly endless, from helping underprivileged kids from neighboring schools to spay and neuter clinics.

Globally, the organization has built schools in Third World countries and volunteers can travel to the places they have supported to see the fruits of their labor. The organization is growing nationwide as volunteers go away to college and start their own programs.

“Our children here live in a bubble, where they have access to so much,” says Skye Larch, principal of Rancho Romero Elementary school in Alamo. “The power behind this is that it develops empathy and compassion in the most natural of ways. They learn small deeds really impact someone’s life and extends beyond them.”

Ghorbani married at 20 and has two sons, Arman, 24 and Jovani, 14, and a daughter Natalia, 20, who all share her passion for helping others. Ghorbani would take her young children with her to give out food and gift cards to the needy. When they ate at restaurants, she would order meals and give them to people outside. Every international trip included handing out gifts to people less fortunate.

“I would think, ‘My children will know how they need to be part of the change we need to be and to be giving, loving and grateful citizens of the world,” says Ghorbani, of Alamo, California.  “Out of all the things we do for our kids, the most important thing is to teach them to give of themselves.”

Ghorbani started taking some of her children’s friends with them on their outings to the tenderloin for many years. Although she was a successful entrepreneur and the wife of a prominent businessman, it wasn’t enough to fulfill her.

“Every day I thought, I would rather be helping in a soup kitchen,” she says. “I tell children what real success in life is not in monetary form, but being engaged in what is around you and caring for the needs of others without hesitation. Don’t do it as your good deed of the day, do it like breathing, because breathing is automatic and necessary.”

Ghorbani encourages students to “turn on their antennas” so they can locate people in need — from children who need a friend at school, to seniors who need help with their groceries. They sign a “kindness contract” to look for ways to help others.

One second grader who signed a contract excitedly told Ghorbani how he had told a friend on crutches that he would help him with whatever he needed.

“To go from that to global service is an attitude that ripples out,” she says.

Ghorbani says it all started with the intention of empowering children.

“I went to elementary schools and told them ‘You don’t know me and I don’t know you, but I know that you are capable and you have everything within you to make someone’s life better to be a blessing to someone else’ ” she says. “I told them, ‘You don’t have to be an adult. You don’t have to be rich. You don’t have to be famous or a super star or a sports star, to have an impact on someone today. Kids started listening and embraced that and it grew, grew, grew.”

One of those students was Kailey McKnight, 18, who says Ghorbani’s passion for helping other inspired her to start the San Ramon Valley High School club when she was just 14. The club has grown from about 10 members to more than 400. There are so many students wanting to participate that the club had to start a waiting list.

“I have a lot of friends I never thought would do community service and would never thought they would care about other people besides themselves,” says Kailey McKnight. “But they love doing it and keep signing up for more.”

Kailey’s mother Beth says she has never volunteered before becoming involved in Pledge to Humanity and now “she’s hooked.” “They say you can’t save everyone, but Gaby just might,” says Beth McKnight.

Jon Campopiano, principal at Stone Valley Middle School in Alamo, says Ghorbani’s son Jovani started a buddy program for kids who felt ostracized at school.

“He took these lunch periods, which can be long and awkward, and made it a time for the kids to all feel included,” Campolpiano says. “Middle schoolers are not known for their empathy, but Gaby and her son have made that happen almost effortlessly.”

All of this is music to  Ghorbani’s ears.

“When we are gone from this earth, I want to think that Pledge to Humanity will have hundreds of thousands of ambassadors doing kind things daily, “she says. “It’s not just a non-profit in Danville and Alamo, but a global movement. I believe in the children. If I’d gotten the same support at 12, God knows what it would be like now!”

Woman Arrested in Craigslist Rape Fantasy Plot Was Actually Framed by Ex-Boyfriend’s Wife, Prosecutors Allege

A California woman who authorities claimed had recruited men on Craigslist to rape her ex-boyfriend’s wife has been cleared of all charges related to the case — and officials allege the man’s wife herself was behind the whole thing.

Michelle Hadley, of Ontario, was arrested in July, accused of harassing Angela Diaz, 31, and sending men to her home to engage in “rape fantasies.” Hadley was exonerated on Monday and Diaz is facing a slew of charges as a result of the twist in the case.

“Ms. Hadley is an innocent victim of a diabolical scheme,” Orange County District Attorney Tony Rackauckas announced in a statement.

Rackauckus alleged Diaz went to great lengths to frame Hadley by allegedly falsely reporting a rape claim and posing as Hadley in emails and on Craigslist.

Diaz has been charged with kidnapping, false imprisonment, falsely reporting crimes, perjury, grand theft and forgery, among other charges. She was arrested by Phoenix, Arizona, police on Friday.

Hadley, who had been released from custody in October nearly three months after her arrest, became emotional outside a Fullerton courthouse on Monday after she was officially exonerated.

“Obviously, this has been a huge nightmare for me, probably the most traumatic experience of my life,” Hadley said, according to the Associated Press. “I’m glad it’s finally over, and I can move on.”

Diaz Allegedly Sent Herself Threatening Emails

The ordeal began in June when Diaz allegedly posed as Hadley on Craigslist and sent responses to people who had responded to “rape fantasy” ads. She allegedly reported to Anaheim police that men arrived at her home to engage in the act. Prosecutors alleged the men were intercepted by police. (The men have not been publicly identified.)

Authorities alleged Diaz sent herself threatening emails, using “violent language” and including pictures to portray herself as a rape victim. Rackauckus also alleged that Diaz falsely reported that a man attempted to rape her in her garage.

Prosecutors said that, for about a month, Diaz allegedly told police Hadley had been threatening to have her raped and had threatened to kill her and what she represented as her unborn child. However, prosecutors alleged Diaz faked the pregnancy.

Hadley’s arrest made headlines, with details of the case garnering widespread attention. But Diaz’s alleged plan soon fell through as authorities learned the threats and Craigslist solicitations allegedly came from Diaz’s phone and condo.

Authorities have not determined a motive for Diaz’s alleged actions. But the women are linked by Ian Diaz, an agent with the U.S. Marshals Service, according to the AP. Prosecutors have said they have no evidence indicating Ian was involved.

It is unclear whether Diaz has entered a plea or acquired a lawyer. Prosecutors said she faces a maximum sentence of 12 years and eight months in prison along with 11 years in county jail.

Karen has no real response in bed. Karen just lies there and lets me do what I want. Unfortunately, Karen just lying there isn’t what I want. I’m upset and angry and Karen is a bundle of nerves. She has been fed some sort of line by her family and friends about how good it would be if she just waited for sex until marriage and now her marriage is in trouble. What a letdown! Karen tries several ‘remedies.’ I think the remedies are obtained from ladies magazines. The candlelight, the nighties, the mood music are all very good. However, the sex still remains awful.I’m seriously contemplating divorce (and the almost certain loss of my job and probably my career,) when I have to take a business trip. I happen to listen in on a conversation between a couple of guys in the seat in front of me on an airplane. The one guy is telling his buddy how much his love life has improved since he bought his wife some sort of machine, called a Sybian. I write down the info. When I get back home, I try to discuss the matter with Karen but she doesn’t want to talk about a nasty machine. In desperation, I make an appointment and I actually go and observe the machine in action! The Sybian machine isn’t cheap (hell, it isn’t even reasonable.) However the guy and his wife who are selling the machine say that they have never had a failure and they will sell me the machine on an unconditional money back guarantee basis.I buy the machine. When I get the machine home it takes me a couple of hours to talk Karen into even looking at the thing. Karen then has a fit when she finds out what I paid for the machine. She finally agrees to try the machine if and only if I’ll promise to take it back and never again waste so much money on something that will never work. Since I have the money back guarantee and the obvious confidence of the sellers, I agree to the trail run. Karen goes into the bathroom and changes into a sexy little baby doll nightie. She comes out and I support her while she lowers herself on

Rob Kardashian Claims Blac Chyna Won’t Let Him See Baby Dream, Still Refers to Her as His ‘Woman’

Rob Kardashian has taken to Instagram to plead with Blac Chyna to let him see their newborn daughter Dream after she left their shared home.

After Kardashian, 29, shared footage of empty rooms in his home and claimed Chyna “took the baby, took the whole nursery we built” on Saturday, he began posting memes people had created of the couple’s apparent breakup.

“Bring Dream back to her Dad please,” Kardashian captioned one meme that depicts Chyna, 28, “stealing Christmas” dressed as the Grinch with their daughter Dream and Chyna’s 4-year-old son King (from her previous relationship with Tyga) in her bag. “She blocked me or else I would ask to see her and she has the guard gate not letting me in the gate either. I just miss baby Dream.” (In a since-deleted post, Chyna said Kardashian could come see Dream if he wanted to because he “knows where we are.”)

In another post that shows Kardashian standing alone in an empty house, he claims that although he’s sharing the comical memes, the situation is anything but humorous.

“This is all very real and serious to me and I’m trying to cheer myself up with these and they are making me laugh. So relax,” he wrote. “This wasn’t fake or some publicity stunt. Trust me. My one month old beautiful baby girl got taken from me along with my wife who left me. Been upset for days so relax. This is all very real in my life. I don’t play when it comes to my woman and my baby.”

Kardashian’s most recent post was a collage of photos of his daughter.

“Pretty Dream,” he captioned the photos. “Miss u pretty mama.”

Chyna also appeared to regain control of her Instagram account after it was hacked on Saturday, sharing a photo of her children to promote the special episode of Rob & Chyna featuring Dream’s birth.

The anonymous hacker claimed she had left Kardashian and they were going to “expose” the reality star and how she was using Kardashian while allegedly cheating on him with other men. The hacker then began to share private messages and text conversations allegedly between Chyna and her lawyer, Jaden Smith and rapper Young Thug — although they didn’t appear to show any signs of infidelity on Chyna’s part.

Chyna later confirmed that the conversations were true, and even implied that Kardashian was behind the hack in a since-deleted post.

This Woman Found A Festive Way To Give Her Wedding Dress A Second Life

For 26 years, Tess Heidelberger’s wedding dress was sitting in a dusty box in her basement next to her Christmas decorations.

“I thought, ‘What a waste,’” she told The Huffington Post. “My basic Christmas tree skirt was on the top of the box of Christmas decorations and that’s when I got the idea to put the two of them together.”

Tess, who lives in Mauldin, South Carolina, purchased the dress in 1989 so it had all the hallmarks of 80s bridal style ― like those signature puffy sleeves. She got married the following year in 1990.

Her daughters had no interest in wearing it themselves (they felt it was too dated), so there were no objections to Tess turning the dress into an art project.

She grabbed a pair of scissors, her hot glue gun and got to work. All she needed to buy was a plain Christmas tree skirt (to put underneath the dress fabric) and some pretty ribbon to cover the glue.

“I laid out my wedding dress and cut the skirt off the dress ― the first cut is the hardest!” Tess explained to HuffPost. “Then I cut off any details on the dress, like appliqués, bows and beading. Then I pinned the wedding dress skirt on the plain Christmas tree skirt until I liked the way it looked. Then I just hot glued it in place and I added the extra appliqués I cut out earlier.”

In all, it only took Tess an hour to complete. She was very pleased with the finished product.

“I love the way it looks!” she said “I’m very sentimental so now every Christmas I can be reminded of our special day!”

Woman Hacks Her Fridge To Dispense Wine, Makes 2016 Great Again

It’s been a rough year. Let’s wine whine about it.

When British blogger Clare Potts recently moved into a new home, she found herself with both a new refrigerator and some wine that needed storing. One genius hack later, she tweeted what may be the greatest invention of 2016, if not ever:

Potts simply filled her fridge’s water cooler with wine and let it flow from the door dispenser as normal. Anyone with a similar system can do it, but Potts recommends washing the cooler to prevent clogging if you choose to fill it with water again afterward.

“We’ve only had the fridge for a few days so we haven’t felt the effects yet,” she told HuffPost. “I’m sure it will come in very useful over Christmas and New Years!”

Oh, what a fabulous holiday season it will be with this invention. Cheers!

Woman Who Ate ‘Carbs All Day Every Day’ Drops 100 Lbs. After Eliminating Bread from Her Diet

Kristina Guice had always been “the fat kid in school,” she says, so when the Tucson, Arizona, native got accepted to graduate school across the country in Long Island, New York, she decided this was her opportunity to make a change.

Guice, 25, had recently lost a close friend — who had also been her weight loss inspiration — and got accepted to graduate school just two weeks later. The two major life events made her want to get serious about finally losing weight.

“I was like, ‘Here is my someday,’” she tells PEOPLE. “I could to a grad school program with people across the country who I’ve never met before, and I could be who I want to be.”

Guice read about the ketogenic diet on Reddit, and was inspired by a woman’s photos who had a similar build to her.

“I was like, I can do that — and I can still eat cheese!” she says of the diet that entails restricting carbs and eating fats as fuel instead. “I had heard about low-carb before and I thought I could never give up bread, but then I started reading about all you can still have.”

Even though Guice was still able to eat dairy, eliminating carbs meant an extreme overhaul in her current diet.

“It was carbs all day every day — cereal for breakfast, nachos or a sandwich for lunch, pizza or pasta for dinner,” she says of her typical daily diet. “I didn’t really like vegetables so I rarely ate salad. Bread was the love of my life, and I didn’t understand what an appropriate portion was, so I was just eating however much I wanted.”

WATCH: Jada Pinkett Smith’s Weight-Loss Secrets

Now Guice gets a very small number of carbs from leafy greens, and sticks to a diet of mainly meat, vegetables and cheese.

“A standard dinner would be spinach and chicken thighs cooked in butter, so I have the fat, the protein and then the leafy green as my carbs,” she says. “That was a big change from having pasta with pasta and a side of pasta!”

Although it was hard to give up her beloved carbs, Guice was motivated to stay on track once she started losing weight.

“Seeing the results right away was super motivating,” she says. “I lost 11 lbs. in the first two weeks. I kept motivated by turning it into a habit. Now it feels weird not to go to the gym or not to log how many carbs I’m having. I do it because it’s what I do.”

When Guice returned home after graduate school, she started her Ellipticalifragilistic Instagram account — which now has 23.5k followers — to keep up with her weight loss goals.

“I really wanted to hit 100 lbs. down so I started an Instagram for more motivation and accountability,” she says. “I loved looking at other people’s fitness and weight loss accounts on Instagram, and having a community, especially other keto people, to see people’s food, and making friendships has made it a lot more fun.  having people to talk to and get feedback from.”

On Guice’s 25th birthday in November, she reached her goal of losing 100 lbs., and says the best part of her weight loss journey has been “discovering I had cheekbones.”

“I never thought I had cheekbones!” she says. “Shopping is a lot more fun too, and being able to have five racks of clothes to choose from instead of a half rack of plus-size clothing has been a big thing.”

Woman Calls Police To Report Man Who Won’t Stop Whistling Semisonic’s ‘Closing Time’

An Oregon woman called the cops after a man allegedly refused to stop “obnoxiously” whistling “Closing Time” by Semisonic, according to a local police log.

Authorities in Forest Grove said that the woman allegedly told the man to “shut up” when he insisted on whistling the timeless classic (yes, timeless classic) near her driveway on Saturday.

The song includes the lyric “I hope you have found a friend.” And yet, it seems that was not true in this case, according to Captain Mark Herb of the Forest Grove Police Department.

“It’s not clear if the caller would have been more or less upset if it was a different genre or whether it was just the talent lacking in the whistling,” Herb told Time.

Now, if you’ve made it this far through the article, the song is undoubtedly stuck in your head. You might as well go all in and listen to the whole thing:

My First Time Sleeping — And Falling In Love — With Another Woman

Sometimes, the path to falling in love takes a beautiful, wholly unexpected turn.

In the Glamour magazine video above, a woman named Lindsey discusses how she slowly fell in love with another woman, even though she never expected to be in a same-sex relationship

As Lindsey explains it, her game plan as an 18-year-old new college student was simple: Hook up with boys ― lots of them. The one thing she hadn’t planned for? Falling in love with her “chipper,” almost annoyingly nice roommate, a girl also named Lindsay.

“[We started] hooking up in secret, still totally convinced that we were both straight: we were just best friends, this is totally just what best friends did,” Lindsey says she told herself. “But long story short: We’re still roommates and best friends today ― we’re also in a relationship.”

Hear how the story unfolds in the video above.

Now You Can Literally Play The ‘Woman Card’

Donald Trump’s “woman’s card” comment about Hillary Clinton has spectacularly backfired, and one brother-sister duo has spun it into a wildly successful Kickstarter campaign to fund the creation of a full deck.

Since making his controversial (and awful) statement on April 26 that, “If [she] were a man, I don’t think she’d get 5 percent of the vote…The only thing she’s got going is the woman’s card,” Trump has managed to bring in huge donations to Clinton’s campaign. An incredible 115,000 individuals donated to her campaign in the days immediately following Trump’s comments — and 47,000 of those individuals were first-time donors. His comment struck a considerable nerve, leaving women across America to wonder how exactly having a “woman’s card” is meant to be beneficial — it certainly hasn’t helped any women running president, considering the last 44 have been men.

While watching Trump’s speech and hearing the “woman’s card” comments,  Zebby Wahls created a rough sketch of a Hillary Clinton playing card. Her brother, Zach Wahls, told The Huffington Post that his sister, a college senior currently enrolled in the University of Iowa’s BFA program “is always sketching.”

The next morning, Zach read a tweet from Adam Smith, who a few years prior started the “Texts From Hillary” Tumblr blog. He immediately thought of his sister’s sketch, and the two were inspired to make the idea a reality. Zach and Zebby launched The Woman Card[s] Kickstarter campaign on April 28.

The siblings narrowed down 13 women that Zebby would draw onto playing cards, and kept in mind who they themselves would want to see represented. “We’re a big card family,” Zach told The Huffington Post. “The reason we’re doing this is because we want these ourselves.” Zebby has thus far created the sketches for Hillary Clinton, Beyonce, and Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

The full list of women features the likes of Sally Ride — the first American woman in space and the first known LGBT astronaut — and Rosa Parks, whose refusal to give her seat up for a white man on an Alabama bus is seen as the resounding “No” that catapulted the United States into the Civil Rights Movement. Others include Clara Barton, Sylvie Rivera, Amelia Earhart, Harriett Tubman, Mary Cassatt, Susan B. Anthony, Wilma Rudolph, and Ida B. Wells.

We tried to pick the 13 women that would be on the deck of cards that we would want to play with. We wanted a deck that reflected what America looks like,” Zebby told HuffPost.

And it’s not just the siblings who want to see more representation of remarkable women. The amount of donations the project has received speaks to how deeply the project has resonated with people. As Zach put it, the demand for the playing cards speaks to “a national response to Trump’s comments.”

When Zach and Zebby created their Kickstarter campaign, they hoped to reach their goal of $ 5,000 by the end of May to make enough packs for family and friends. Instead, “we raised $ 5,000 in about three and a half hours,” Zach said.

This deck of cards — which has achieved phenomenal success before it has even been made — is likely just the beginning for Zebby and Zach. “Our list of women doesn’t include Native American and Asian American women, and that’s something we hope to correct in the second edition,” Zach said. The two have also encouraged people to send it suggestions, and have a running spreadsheet with over 170 of them. “It has been pretty educational for us,” Zebby said. “We’ve seen names of women we didn’t know of beforehand.”

Suggestions have ranged from Wilma Mankiller, who was the first woman to be Principal Chief of The Cherokee Nation to Harper Lee, and while it means a humongous load of work for Zebby, the pair are interested in creating specific editions for women in politics, science, and so on.

Zebby’s goal with the cards is to “foster celebration and also education,” she told HuffPost. With the drawings, and the deck of cards that will feature them, Zebby and Zach have taken Trump’s lemons and turned them into celebratory and educational lemonade. Deal us in.

Somewhere In The Bulgarian Mountains, A Woman Recreates Beyoncé’s ‘Single Ladies’ In Total Silence

If someone flawlessly executes a Beyoncé number in the middle of the remote Rhodope Mountains with nobody there to see it, did it really happen?

Luckily for Gery Georgieva, the video of her triumphant achievement is gaining serious traction online. Georgieva, a British-Bulgarian artist known for blending pop and folk cultures, attempts the only YouTube re-staging of Beyoncé’s “Single Ladies (Put a Ring On It)” choreography you haven’t seen, donning traditional garb and jingling quietly against the snowy landscape. It’s bizarre and oh-so beautiful.

I see pop and folk culture as parallel,” Georgieva explained in an interview with Broadly, “in that they’re the lowest common denominator way of belonging that can move such a big amount of people. That power — to have the ability to encourage thousands of people to learn a Beyoncé dance — that’s something quite special and weird.”

Some other Georgieva moments worth exploring include this Caviar Face Tutorial, which is exactly what it sounds like, and this disco-themed reimagining of Monet’s “Water Lilies.“ Compare the artist’s skills to the original Bey below and let us know your thoughts in the comments.

Marry a Woman Who Adopts a Pit Bull

Inspired by Ramdesh Kaur.

All kinds of women exist. If you’re looking for a true soul partner, marry a woman who adopts a pIt bull.

She will see beyond stereotypes to truly assess a soul. She won’t go chasing after the latest ephemeral fads.

Other people’s perceptions and fears won’t sway her. A woman who adopts a pit bull follows her own compass, she looks beyond the surface to find love, loyalty and lots of cuddling. She will love you for you, for the jewels in your soul that will shine when they meet her gaze.

Marry a woman who adopts a pit bull. She embraces what others fear, and in return, revels in the love she receives. A woman who adopts a pit bull will love you fully and fearlessly. A woman who adopts a pit bull is not for the faint of heart.

Marry a woman who adopts a pit bull. She embraces what others cast off. Her love transforms what others throw away and shun. A woman who loves a pit bull will love you scars and all. She will love you all the more for the scars you have.

Marry a woman who adopts a pit bull. She gets up and goes out, every day no matter the weather. A woman who adopts a pit bull gives her all. To her responsibility is a part of life, like breathing. She knows not everything is easy, and she doesn’t expect it to be. She will challenge you to be your better self. And you will rejoice at how easy that will be.

Marry a woman who adopts a pit bull. She loves to play. She knows it’s good for the soul and good for the body. She will show you how to treasure joy.

Marry a woman who adopts a pit bull and you will find yourself becoming your truest self. You will happily talk to strangers and show them not to judge a book by its cover. You will delight in their joy as they smile while preconceived notions are happily licked away. You will look deeply beyond what you see at first glance to find happiness and love. You will play till you are exhausted and laugh at fatigue.

Marry a woman who adopts a pit bull and walk through the world fearlessly. Not because their is a fierce beast at the end of the leash. But because of the fierce woman at your side.

For the second year, The Huffington Post is holding a week-long, community-driven effort to bust the myths and raise awareness about pit bulls, a maligned “breed” that often bears the brunt of dated, discriminatory legislation that can make it near impossible for these dogs to find a forever home. You can follow along with HuffPost Pit Bull Week here, or on social media where we’ll be using the hashtag #PitBullWeek.

4 Office Fashion Rules From a Woman Who’s Dressed Kate Middleton

When it comes to a model for polished, proper, and utterly professional dressing, you can’t find a better example than Kate Middleton. Her position as a royal and obligatory outings require sophisticated, elegant looks, but it’s also a style vibe that seems pretty ingrained in her style DNA. And while the Duchess reps many designers you’ve heard of (think her customized Tory Burch, the Stuart Weitzman wedges the queen can’t stand, and that Alexander McQueen dress), she’s also shown off a few British labels that have been a little more undercover until now.

Goat has been once such case, with designer Jane Lewis offering up chic understated styles that the Duchess seems to love. Up until now it had been relatively tricky to find the brand in the U.S. but that’s recently changed, with the announcement that the label would begin selling at Saks Fifth Avenue. When we got the chance to talk with Lewis about how easy it is to translate Kate’s style into savvy everywoman office outfits, we knew we owed it to everyone who gets a pay stub.

“There’s been an underlying belief that fashion had no place within the corporate environment and that it could diminish our credibility in some way,” she explained. “Fashion doesn’t have to be frivolous. Style is innate in each of us, and it’s what sets us apart from the generic. A working environment is as good a place as any to show off your personality.”

Rule 1: Think about your workplace.
What works at your friend’s office might not fly at yours, and understanding that is key. “Assess your environment and your requirements. Be honest with yourself and audit trends as appropriate,” Lewis said. Once you’ve figured out the essentials that make a stellar outfit for your field of work, invest in some key basics. “They’ll become the foundation of an edited yet versatile working wardrobe.”

Rule 2: Don’t be afraid of color.
“It can be empowering and feminine and is an excellent way to tap into a current trend,” she said, insisting that even the color-averse can experiment with shades other than black and navy. “Mid colors like burgundy, fern green, and dark teal are what I call ‘noncolors’ that are good for people who may feel overwhelmed by strong brights.”

Rule 3: Rely on accessories to update and upgrade.
To inject some new life into office fashion made up of dependable building blocks, add statement jewelry or standout shoes. “One feature accent is enough to update an outfit,” Lewis instructed, specifying that one is indeed the magic number. “One thing at a time is enough. Discretion can make a powerful impression and have enormous impact.” Consider a large cuff bracelet with shortened sleeves that show it off, a belt with color or print, or a pair of playful shoes that peek out from underneath your trousers.

Rule 4: Stay comfortable.
Because, really, what’s the good of all these guidelines if you’re squirming and fidgeting? “Don’t underestimate the confidence and elegance comfort lends you. It’s the foundation of dressing well for your environment.” Ban uncomfortable cuts, pieces you’re always tugging at, and ouch-worthy heels from the office.

Kate in Goat’s Redgrave coat, the first piece she ever wore from the label

When you read her suggestions with Kate in mind, it totally clicks into place that, yup, they’re all lessons that the Duchess has learned and applied. And about that famous mum of two? Lewis is much like any of the other designers Kate’s worn, completely unaware that the royal will be stepping out in one of her pieces (maybe because she’s shopping online?)

“It was a lovely surprise and great honor,” Lewis remembered about the time she first saw Kate in Goat (she seems to be especially fond of the label’s classic, tailored coats).

This Is The Kind Of Bullsh*t You Face As A Woman In The Music Industry

With the help of women on Twitter, a music critic has shed light on an uglier aspect of the industry she works in.

Jessica Hopper, music and culture critic and senior editor at Pitchfork, sparked a conversation on Twitter when she asked women and “other marginalized folks” among her almost 28,000 followers when they first felt like they “didn’t ‘count'” in the music industry.

What came after was a disturbing look at what women face in the industry as Twitter users shared their experiences of sexism and misogyny. Many who are musicians, journalists, photographers and crew members explained that they were often not taken seriously and frequently mistaken for groupies or girlfriends.

Others highlighted the crude comments and casual sexism they experienced on a daily basis.

The most unsettling examples of misogyny came from Twitter users who bravely spoke up about being sexually assaulted, and the troubling reactions they received afterwards.

Though the majority of the responses highlighted sexism in the music and journalism industries, Hopper’s tweet also motivated others to share their experience with sexism in other fields and with racial stereotypes. Since receiving so much feedback, Hopper has shifted the conversation and asked women about their accomplishments in the music industry and other fields using the hashtag #WomenInMusic.

Considering the obstacles they overcame for these accomplishments, these women deserve a round of applause.

A Simple Way To Know When It’s OK To Ask A Woman If She’s Pregnant

Mom Carrie Saum was fed up with people assuming her “squishy” belly was a “baby bump,” so she made a helpful video and flowchart to let people know when it’s OK to ask a woman if she’s pregnant.

According to Saum, there are only two scenarios when it’s appropriate: If she tells you she’s pregnant and you respond, “Really? What? You’re pregnant?” or if you’re in the room where she is giving birth and see the baby crowning or witness the C-section taking place.

“The bottom line here is that women’s bodies are not your business,” the mom explains, adding, “If a woman wants you to know, she’ll tell you.”

Woman Sees Donald Trump In Her Vegan Butter

I can’t believe it’s not Donald!

Jan Castellano was getting ready to have some breakfast when she almost lost her lunch. She opened a tub of Earth Balance Organic Spread with plans to put the vegan butter on her toast — only to see what she claims is the image of Donald Trump looking right back at her.

It wasn’t necessarily appetizing, but it was entertaining.

“This was pretty much before I had coffee, so I was easily amused,” Castellano, 63, told The Huffington Post. “I needed to put on my glasses to make sure it was him.”

Castellano, of Wildwood, Missouri, says she wasn’t thrilled to see The Donald, mainly because “he is everywhere these days.”

She thought about saving the Trump-enhanced spread and sell it on eBay “so I could donate the money to Hillary Clinton.”

But short-term hunger won out over long-term wealth.

“It was the only butter I had, so I had to make the sacrifice,” she explained.

Currently, only Trump’s eye and part of his mouth remain in the tub, and Castellano hopes his campaign “melts away like butter” as well.

HuffPost reached out to Earth Balance to see if the Trump face was intentional, but the company had no comment.

Meet the Woman Behind Beyoncé’s Street Style Transformation

by EDWARD BARSAMIAN

“She wears the crown for all the work that she’s put into the industry,” says Beyoncé’s personal wardrobe curator, Zerina Akers. “But I also want her to have fun. After all she is a woman.”

Over the past year, Akers has worked with the multiplatinum superstar analyzing the right cuts, fits, and silhouettes solidifying Queen Bey’s place in fashion royalty–one which the consummately best-dressed singer maintains through not only her own wardrobe, but a forthcoming partnership with Topshop, too. But there’s another, equally stylish side of the pop icon, and anyone who visits the 33-year-old’s Instagram or website will notice: Recently she has been upping her fashion game with seemingly impromptu shoots no matter where in the world she happens to be. We’ve also seen Bey sport some names outside the runway regulars including Harbison, Marco de Vincenzo, and Romeo Hunte–courtesy of Akers. “I really wanted to bring in some new designers, some younger kids to see what they’re doing,” Akers told us recently, adding, “and then incorporate more international designers and underground streetwear designers out of London.”

It’s been a masterful evolution for the singer who has lately taken to bold color, feminine prints, and punchy accessories. For the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight, Mrs. Carter slipped into a cardinal Harbison jumpsuit, while another occasion saw her opt for a tailored, canary yellow Zadig & Voltaire suit emphasizing the star’s renewed focus on rainbow-like shades. “I wanted to be a little more experimental with color,” says Akers, adding, “like the orange Cushnie et Ochs top and pink Dsquared2 shorts. She’s such a bright person and I feel like in fashion today everyone strays away from color.”

However, one outfit that Akers references as a favorite was an all-cream look Beyoncé wore earlier this summer, which hinted at the shift in wardrobe that’s sophisticated and clean, but accessible: Pairing a topper from Barneys New York with Frame Denim jeans, her ensemble was a study in how to approach neutral dressing at all price points. “High-low is all about color selection, shape, and fabrication of the garment,” explains Akers. “I can get a skirt for $ 50 in matte jersey. It’s going to move and hug the body in a similar way as a skirt that’s $ 795.” Akers says the secret to her A-list client’s style comes down to the fit: She and Bey have been gravitating toward asymmetrical and bias cuts.

But the best part of her role, the stylist maintains, is being able see Beyoncé excited about the looks. “That’s the reward,” says Akers matter-of-factly. “That she’s enjoying herself and feels beautiful and confident.” How else, after all, to run the world?

What Every Woman Should Know About Looking Better in Clothes

“Your sleeve is a 26,” Zac Posen tells me as he prods at the arm of my blazer. “Actually, 25 3/4.”

We’re perched in a back corner of his atelier for a photo-shoot fitting. Together we’ve decided that I’ll wear a shapely skirt suit, and though it’s my size—a 12—it does not fit. The skirt is so tight it won’t zip up. The jacket fits in the shoulders but drowns out my waist. And the mermaid shape is so snug I can’t walk at all. As you can imagine, I’m embarrassed—and briefly consider running for the door.

Lauren-Chan-Zac-Posen

But Posen is unfazed. In fact, he’s already remeasuring so he can tell where to pin, let out, and take in the garments. “Alterations,” he tells me, “are the game changer when it comes to the perfect fit.” And once he’s done, voila: The skirt zips, the jacket accommodates, and I can move. “The right tailoring can make any garment work for any body,” says Posen. “And it can make you feel confident—especially when, these days, a lot of clothing is two-dimensional, but in real life every body is different, and women have curves.”

As a size 12, those words hit home for me. I often feel left out by fashion: In a standard size range, a 12 is regularly too tight; in a plus-size range, even the smallest 14 is too wide. I’ve learned to shop around this conundrum, but I’m still left standing in a fitting room feeling defeated more than I’d like to admit. And I’m not alone. Women of many body types struggle to fit properly into clothing—so let’s do something about it! Isn’t it time we stop trying to fit into our clothes and have our clothes fit us instead? Here are a few suggestions on how to start:

Step One: Ignore Your Size
That’s right—ignore. Sizes vary between countries, companies, and even articles of clothing. The U.S. government has been attempting to fix this problem via regulation since the 1940s, but instead, the situation has actually gotten worse, with the arrival of vanity sizing—in which bigger garments are tagged with smaller numbers to entice customers (that’s why the 00 now exists). “The mentality that the lowest size is best needs to go out the window,” says plus-size model and fashion designer Candice Huffine. “It’s just a number that somebody made up”

Her advice? “Try on several sizes, bigger and smaller,” she says. “Some people have tag phobia: They don’t want to buy a bigger size because of the number on the label. If you care about that, cut the tags out when you get home!”

Step Two: Shop for Your Biggest Part
It’s an easy truth that changes everything: Buy an item to fit the widest part of your body and take the rest of the garment in. That means no more jackets that gape open and muffin-top-inducing jeans. (Amen!)

“I’m a fan of blazers,” says Huffine. “But when I find one that fits through my shoulders and bust, the waist is often too big. I buy for my broadest part, then create an hourglass by taking in the midsection.”

So what does this mean for your shape? If you’re pear-shaped, buy to fit your bottom and take in elsewhere. “I have a small waist and bigger hips,” says celebrity stylist Sara Paulsen, who’s worked with Mindy Kaling. “I often wear A-line and flounce-hem skirts, which balance my proportions. I buy to fit my hip, then take the waist in—I sometimes even nip a fitted skirt right under the butt to create a flattering curve.”

If you’re muscular, the widest part of your body may be your shoulders and biceps. “I tend to have to fit my arms in jackets and take the body in,” says Hannah Bronfman, the founder of fitness site HBfit.com. “I always buy a size larger and make adjustments.”

Height can also make it more difficult to wear off-the-rack clothing. “It’s really hard for short girls to wear midi skirts,” says celebrity stylist Kate Young—whose clients include Selena Gomez and Natalie Portman. “They make you look shorter. Either go maxi—to the floor—or have the hem taken up above the knee.”

Tall women face the opposite dilemma. “Finding clothes that really fit my body has been a lifelong struggle,” says cover girl and denim designer Karlie Kloss. “Growing up, I found that if pants were long enough, they were much too big; if they fit in the waist, they were way too short.” If that sounds like you, buy a length that fits and have a tailor adjust the waist—or look to the solution Kloss herself invented, a Frame Denim line with 40-inch inseams. (Hudson Jeans and the Gap also offer extended lengths.)

Runway-for-bodies

Step Three: Master E-Shopping
When shopping online, it helps to know your bust, waist, and hip measurements; most sites translate their sizes into those numbers. Also, consider brands that take fit into account: Rent the Runway shares photos of customers in each item (with their honest reviews), so you can see how a piece works on a variety of shapes and sizes. There are also companies that help with fitting woes; True Fit, for example, works with brands like Jason Wu and Marc Jacobs to generate suggestions based on your sizes, previous purchases, and its own e-commerce database.

Step Four: Make Your Alterations
The next step is the all-important nipping and tucking. Find a good tailor by asking a trusted boutique, department store, or dry cleaner in your area for a recommendation. If you’re technologically inclined, try in-home tailoring services like Mend and zTailors. Here are a few things a tailor will be able to do to your garments:

  • Create your shape and size. Generally, you can hem or take a seam in as much as four inches; any more will throw the look of the garment off. And ask your tailor to follow the lines of your body. “If you’re working with a dress or jacket, fit the shape of your back,” says Posen. “It’s curved, not a straight line!”
  • Make more room. “People tend to think that you can only make stuff smaller, but you can make things a little bigger too,” says Young. “If a dress is hugging a bit, you can often find some room in the zipper or the side seam to let out.” You can also cut a slit or vent in a dress.
  • Find the right length. “With skinny pants, you can wear any heel height, since the hem should grace the top of the shoe,” says Young. For wide-leg pants, which should hit the floor, “buy two pairs and have one altered to wear with flats and one to wear with heels.” If you buy only one, hem it to work with the heel height you wear most often.
  • Streamline your silhouette. A tailor can close up pockets in a pair of pants,
  • add hook-and-eye closures between gaping buttons on a shirt, or create darts under the bust or in the back of a top to create cleaner lines. If you always tuck in shirts, remove the bottom few buttons so they don’t show under clothes.

Step Five: Consider Custom-Made
Still unsatisfied? Look into made-to- measure clothing, either from a tailor or via sites like eShakti and small boutiques on Etsy. It can be expensive (shirts start at around $ 100, and a full suit can run upwards of $ 1,500) but worth it, at least for frequently worn items. “Custom-made clothing is economical,” argues Posen. “If you take good care of them, your garments can last for a long time.”

Huffine’s made-to-measure must is a cocktail dress—like the Sophie Theal- let she wore to this year’s Pirelli calendar launch. “I needed to wear a bra and I wanted to wear Spanx, so she designed around that,” she says. “In the end, the gown was something I knew I would be comfortable and feel like myself in.”

And that, of course, is the point. The outfit I reach for when I want to feel like my best self? You guessed it: Posen’s expertly tailored skirt suit. With it on, I stand taller, smile bigger, and behave more confidently. “We need to stop letting fashion make us uncomfortable,” says Huffine. “When something is tailored to fit you perfectly, it takes all worry away. Your garment isn’t fighting against you—it’s working with you.”

So the next time you’re standing in the fitting room, remember: It’s not you that needs to be altered. It’s your clothes.

10 Signs You’ve Found the Woman You Should Marry

Women are great. Like really, really great.

As a strong, independent woman, I can confidently reiterate that women are a necessity in all heterosexual men’s lives. The woman you’re dating should enrich your life. In fact, she should make it so amazing, that you can’t wait to marry her.

Here are 10 ways to know that the woman you’re with is the one you should marry.

1. She’s sweet.

A sweet woman is hard to find — especially in a big, tough city. So a good woman is surely a keeper. When you find a woman who is sweet, or any version of it, put a ring on it!

2. She makes you smile.

Whether you’re in Central Park or in the South of France with her, she makes you really, really happy. You should able to laugh and be silly with her. Communicating is easy because you can talk to her, and I mean really talk to her. You feel safe and comfortable sharing your emotions with her. You know she’ll be by your side through thick or thin.

3. She’s a good partner.

Your life is better with her in it. She’s someone you can build (and imagine!) a great life with. Picturing having a family with her is a no-brainer, because she’d be a good mom. She’d be such a great wife that you’d consider giving her a wife bonus. Just kidding!

4. You want to be with her.

Plain and simple, you want to be with her. You hear stories from your friends about how they love being single, or they dread seeing their wives. Maybe your single friends talk about how they don’t want to give up the bachelor life. Your coupled friends say they work late just to avoid spending quality time with their significant others. But you don’t feel that way. Being with her never gets old. You want to be with her — as much as you can!

5. She thinks you’re a dime piece.

You catch her checking you out pretty often. You might be in gym shorts, or in black tie formal, and she always thinks you’re the sexiest man alive.

6. You trust her.

She’s loyal. You know she’s your ride or die lady. She’d never cheat on you, because she loves you too much. She could be on a girls trip in Ibiza for 10 days straight and you know you have nothing to worry about. She’s there when you need her and she makes you a priority.

7. You think she’s hot and sexy.

She could be fully dressed, or sans clothing, but when you look at her, you think “Daaaamn.” You know you’re lucky, because she’s so hot and sexy.

8. She’s your biggest supporter.

She’s always singing your praise. Whatever life has in store for you two, you know she’ll be your biggest cheerleader. She’s always there for you.

9. Everyone likes her.

Everyone likes her because she’s that wonderful. She’s easy to talk to. She’s friendly and personable. She’s so great that even a homeless person would want to be her friend.

10. She lets you have space.

A good woman will give you space. She doesn’t crowd or smother you. Man days, man nights, man cave, you name it — she lets you do your “man” things.

Woman In A Wheelchair Gives Powerful Response To A Rude Question About Her Sex Life

“I get a lot of questions from strangers who think that because my wheelchair puts me at a lower height, the walls surrounding my personal life must be lower too.”

So begins Kelsey Warren’s riveting spoken word poem called “My Body.” As a disabled woman, Warren discusses the rude stares and even ruder questions she constantly receives. Although she says these run-of-the-mill intrusions don’t bother her any longer, she points out one question she recently received that really got under her skin:

“So do you like let your partner have a side relationship so they can have normal sex every once in awhile?”

“Honey,” she replies to the question in her performance. “If they’re with me, they’re not looking for normal and I don’t mean because I’m crippled.”

Warren goes on to explain that her sex is exciting and comfortable and sensual — really anything but “normal” and that’s why it’s so good. “Sex with me is never normal,” she tells the crowd. “Cripple copulation may be slightly more complicated, but it is always climactic. Not once has someone that I had sex wit said my sex was less than.”

She proudly proclaims her body is beautiful. “This body wasn’t made to meet your definition of desirable,” Warren says. “This body doesn’t exist to be taken or left. This body is broken but it is beautiful.”

With her powerful delivery, Warren nears the end of the poem with a truth all women can heed: “My body will not be denied its worth. My body will keep the job of being my body, perfectly.”

After Being Denied 73 Years Ago, 92-Year-Old Black Woman Finally Receives Her Library Card

Ninety-two-year-old Pearl Thompson was a student at Shaw University in 1942 when she attempted to check out a book from the Olivia Raney Library in Raleigh, North Carolina. Her school, which is an HBCU, didn’t carry the book she needed for a history class so she visited the local library. According to her daughter, Deborah Thompson, Pearl was denied a library card because she was black, so instead, she was sent to the building’s basement to read the book.

“I expected to go in and get a book,” Pearl told News & Observer.

Seventy-three years later, Pearl returned to Raleigh with her daughter and granddaughter and finally got her library card.

Pearl Thompson signs the back of her library card.

“She was fighting good health but she was determined to make this trip,” Deborah told HuffPost. She said Pearl is currently battling kidney disease and suffers from heart issues — but she wouldn’t let that stop her.

The Olivia Raney Library was the city’s first public library and later became a part of the larger Wake County Public Library system. In the 1960’s, it merged with Richard B. Harrison Library — a library Deborah said Pearl helped to launch — which only served blacks at the time. The Olivia Raney Library, which is now closed, serves as a local history library and the administration at Cameron Village Library, which opened right after Olivia Raney Library closed, held a ceremony in Pearl’s honor last week.

“We all felt that the presentation of Mrs. Thompson’s library card needed to be honored with a ceremony and we also wanted the opportunity to rectify a mistake of the past,” Ann Burlingame, deputy director of Wake County Public Libraries, told The Huffington Post on Tuesday.

After college, Pearl, who has always been an advocate for education, went on to become a teacher in Raleigh for nearly fifty years.

“I was determined that when I became a teacher every child would have an opportunity to learn to read,” Pearl said at the ceremony. “A little boy [had] Down’s syndrome and they said he would never learn to read. And I taught him to read. Even to the point he wrote books himself.”

Thompson moved to Ohio with her husband after 12 years as a teacher in Raleigh, and she now lives in Cincinnati where she taught for 37 years. Decades after her days in college, she said she doesn’t hold a grudge against the library and their poor treatment.

“I don’t hold any kind of hate in my heart, because that doesn’t do it,” she said. “That doesn’t get you there.”

Foreward Reviews’ INDIEFAB Book of the Year Award Gold Winner for Travel. Winner 1st place for best travel memoir at the 2014 North American Book Awards. Also winner of the silver Solas Awards for Best Travel Story of the Year 2014. From licking a Monet in Paris, to pushing an abusive macho honeymooner off his sailboat in the shark-infested Galápagos, to saving her toddler son from a charging bull elephant in Africa, these delightful tales will inspire readers to follow the call of a wild life and leave home with their doors unlocked. “When you’re hitchhiking about in foreign lands, whether in France, Morocco, or perhaps New Zealand, it helps-as California-girl Lisa Alpine discovered-to be “young, blond, persistent, and female.” And to get along, once you’ve reached an approximate destination in hardscrabble exotica, you should be friendly, fearless, and sometimes counter intuitively trusting. There is daring, humor, and even a bit of Eros in the fourteen stories that span her life from the innocence of eighteen, when she was struck with wanderlust, into middle age. “I am a woman who wanders and wonders and writes,” she explains. And what wandering there’s been, beginning in Paris, where she tasted art by licking a Monet. In Vienna, she asked an old woman, who turned out to be a survivor of Auschwitz, where she might find cheap lodging and ended up as the woman’s house guest. She met the chauffeur of Keith Richards of the Rolling Stones in Switzerland and was offered a job babysitting Richards’s two children, but after witnessing a temper tantrum by Richards’s live-in girlfriend, declined and took a job as a bartender, offering free drinks in order to get her slave-driving boss, who held her passport as ransom, to fire her. See Wonder Woman And Lex Luthor In New ‘Batman V Superman’ Photos

Batman and Superman won’t face off until next year, but the two superheroes are already making their presence known in a major way.

In addition to their appearance at San Diego Comic-Con next week, Ben Affleck’s Bruce Wayne and Henry Cavill’s Clark Kent from the upcoming “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” cover this week’s issue of Entertainment Weekly. The real star of the cover, however, is Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman.

The issue of the magazine also features Affleck describing a “sexy” Bond-like scene between Wonder Woman and Batman, as well as exclusive looks at Jesse Eisenberg’s Lex Luthor (who surprisingly has a full head of hair) and Batman and Superman facing off for the first time.

Zack Snyder revealed to EW that his film actually began as an easter egg suggestion for “Man of Steel.” While in a meeting with Christopher Nolan and David S. Goyer, Snyder said, “What about at the end of the movie we do a scene where there’s a crate full of kryptonite delivered to Wayne Manor?” Then the idea turned into a full feature. “Once you say it out loud, it’s a problem, because you can’t unsay it,” Snyder told the magazine.

While we don’t know many specifics about “Batman v Superman” beyond the official synopsis and official trailer, we now know a little more about Snyder’s version of the Caped Crusader. Affleck told EW that he plays a “more embittered and cynical” Batman. “He’s on the verge of being swallowed up by the anger and the rage that we see haunt this character in the other manifestations of it,” the actor told EW.

Check out the cover photo below and the exclusive photos over at EW.com.

This Woman Refuses To Shave Her Armpits, And Gender Equality Is Only Part Of It

More and more women are refusing to shave their armpits — and resisting patriarchal beauty standards in the process.

Loyola University of Chicago student Bobby Crowley, who stopped shaving her underarms a few years ago, spoke to the double standard men and women face when it comes to their body hair in a conversation with HuffPost Live.

“It’s not just a body image thing, but it’s also a gender thing,” she said. “This is very clearly a gendered prescription that has been put upon women, whereas men are walking around and no one expects them to shave their armpits, obviously. People will talk about it like it’s a hygiene thing, but really it’s a gender thing. It’s absolutely only prescribed only to women, and there’s no way that women are any messier than [men], that’s for sure.”

While Lizzie Crocker, a staff writer at The Daily Beast, told HuffPost Live’s Nancy Redd that unshaven pits have become “inextricably linked to feminism,” Crowley said her choice to stop shaving was simply a personal one.

“Most importantly for me, when I started, it wasn’t about a movement. It wasn’t about anyone but myself. I would shave [my armpits] and they would be bleeding,” she said. “And really the reason I stopped is because I sort of looked at myself and said, I’m literally hurting myself every day because I have really sensitive skin.”

When she stepped back and questioned why she had been shaving every day, she had an epiphany.

“[I was not shaving] for me. It was a worry that when I lift my arms, I’m going to be shamed for having made a decision about my body that doesn’t go with how other people feel,” she said. “And that, to me, was most important.”

Vote: Which Kardashian/Jenner Woman Wore the Sexiest Dress Yesterday

It was a Kardashian-Jenner battle royal in Cannes yesterday when Kim Kardashian and Kris and Kylie Jenner all showed up at the Daily Mail‘s yacht party in a trio of super-sexy outfits.

kim-kardashian-kylie-jenner-kris-jenner-daily-mail-2015

Kim wore all black, picking a sheer, long-sleeve LaQuan Smith dress that exposed black briefs and a bra. The look was super similar to Kylie’s pick, a coincidence (or not) of the exact type that fuels rumors that the two get frustrated with their overlapping style. The youngest sister wore matched separates from Francesco Scognamiglio that exposed snowy white undergarments.

Kris didn’t get the sheer memo, but she still brought the sexy in a printed gray gown that showed off a lot of cleavage.

A sexy red-carpet M.O. isn’t the only thing the fam shares—get the intel on those black aviator sunglasses the krew’s always wearing on TV.

Watch Kylie and Kendall dish on each sister’s individual quirks:

Viola Davis On Finally Playing A ‘Sexualized’ Woman

It takes guts for a Hollywood actress to portray an imperfect woman. Or as Viola Davis calls it, to “woman up.”

During The Hollywood Reporter’s Emmy Nominee Actress roundtable, Davis opened up about her lead role on “How to Get Away with Murder” — and the anxiety and self-doubt that came along with getting it. The roundtable also included fellow small-screen powerhouses Jessica Lange, Lizzy Caplan, Viola Davis, Ruth Wilson, Taraji P. Henson and Maggie Gyllenhaal.

Davis discussed what it was like to be cast as criminal defense attorney and professor Annalise Keating. “There was absolutely no precedent for [the role],” Davis said. “I had never seen a 49-year-old, dark-skinned woman who is not a size 2 be a sexualized role in TV or film. I’m a sexual woman, but nothing in my career has ever identified me as a sexualized woman. I was the prototype of the ‘mommified’ role.”

When she accepted the part, Davis said she felt terrified — and then empowered.

Fear would be an understatement. When I saw myself for the first time in the pilot episode, I was mortified. I saw the fake eyelashes and, “Are you kidding me? Who is going to believe this?” And then my big “aha” moment was: “This is your moment to not typecast yourself, to actually play a woman who is sexualized and do your investigative work as an actor to find out who this woman is, and woman up and put a real woman on TV who’s smack-dab in the midst of this pop fiction.”

Davis also touched on the pressure women in Hollywood feel to play characters that are “likable.”

“The thing I had to get used to with TV was the likability factor,” Davis said. “People have to like you, people have to think you’re pretty. I was going to have to face a fact that people were going to look at me and say: ‘I have no idea why they cast her in a role like this. She just doesn’t fit. It should have been someone like Halle Berry. It’s her voice, and she doesn’t walk like a supermodel in those heels.’ And people do say that, they do.”

But Davis has been able to tune out the naysayers by challenging herself to place the real world before Hollywood. “The women in my life who are sexualized are anywhere from a size zero to a size 24. They don’t walk like supermodels in heels. They take their wig and makeup off at night,” Davis said. “So this role was my way of saying, ‘Welcome to womanhood!'”

Head over to The Hollywood Reporter to read the full roundtable discussion.

The Flawless Response This Woman Had To A Dude Who Told Her She Needed To Lose Weight

One surefire way to not pick up a lady: Tell her she needs to lose weight.

On June 3, marketing director and fashion blogger Christina Topacio took to Twitter to share an offensive and sexist text message conversation she had with a guy she had never actually met in real life.

The audacious dude told Topacio that while he would “seriously consider dating” her and “getting to know” her, he thinks she needs to change a few things. This unsolicited advice was not necessary (to say the least).

“It fucking kills me to say this… And it’s nothing you don’t already know,” the guy wrote in a text to Topacio. “And I’m positive you’ve thought about it. And I’m only telling you this because I want it to effect a change. You need to fucking lose weight. It kills me.”

Topacio told The Huffington Post that she met the guy on a dating site where they exchanged numbers, however, they had never hung out in person.

She tweeted screenshots of the entire text message conversation yesterday to her 8,500 followers, receiving over 2,500 retweets. Check out the cringeworthy exchange below:

“My first reaction was, literally, ‘Wait, what?!'” Topacio told HuffPost. “Then, I got sad. Like, this person has never seen me in real life. I was baffled.”

She said that she shared the conversation on social media to empower women to stand up for themselves. “My goal is to encourage girls to not only brush it off, despite how hurtful it is, and to laugh it away,” she said. “I want women to feel empowered to stand up for themselves, own who they are and understand that someone else’s opinion has no relation to them being an amazing person.”

“My story is not a new story, this happens to women constantly,” she added. “I’m just happy to have been given an opportunity to share my personal experience in hopes that it empowers women to shut it down. And ultimately say… I’m beautiful, I’m strong, I’m powerful, I’m 100 percent me.”

Take note of Topacio’s flawless response:

Woman Performing ‘Lose Yourself’ In Sign Language Gets Us Super Pumped

We always wondered how to say, “Mom’s spaghetti” in American Sign Language.

Luckily we have Shelby Mitchusson, an ASL interpreter who performed Eminem’s “Lose Yourself” on YouTube. It’s one of her first videos — though she appears to have interpreted bad-assery at rock concerts before — but we can tell she’s going to be an internet sensation.

She really gets into it — and it looks like she plans on rewarding us with more of her videos soon.

“I have a deep love for interpreting music and would love to share more as I am always interpreting music,” she wrote on YouTube. “As always your feedback is wanted! Again, thank you all — I’ll upload more soon.”

If you think Shelby’s awesome, meet the woman who took Public Enemy’s music to a whole new level with sign language.

How Not To Slut-Shame A Woman (A Guide For ‘The Bachelorette’)

The two-Bachelorette drama may be over (mostly — we’re expecting to see more of Britt and her new suitor Brady), but during Tuesday night’s season highlights, ABC amped the anti-woman sentiment way up. Seems like the franchise’s “weird sex issues” are here to stay.

Preview clips are always cut to misdirect, but it’s clear that Kaitlyn has sex with one of the men and gets called out for her physical intimacy by some of her suitors. The preview (see below, starting at around 2:30) shows Kaitlyn sobbing, berating herself for making a “mistake,” while bachelors accuse her of just going on TV to make out with a bunch of guys. The producers play this up even further by cutting in Kaitlyn saying that sexual chemistry is vital to a relationship.

The slut-shaming overtones of the preview alone were deeply disturbing. Here’s hoping the actual arc of the season won’t be all about raking Kaitlyn over the coals for engaging in normal adult behavior.

In case ABC needs a little reminder, here are some simple guidelines to help them portray Kaitlyn’s search for love in a way that doesn’t hearken back to the Victorian era:

1. Having consensual sex with another adult is not wrong.

2. You are not a broken woman just because you make out with men. (Or with women for that matter.)

3. A woman has no obligation to confess every detail of her sex life to men she’s casually dating.

4. Sexual chemistry is totally a “right reason” to date someone.

5. Not having a physical spark with someone is a totally reasonable dealbreaker for any woman.

6. A woman should not feel ashamed for sleeping with someone.

7. Making out with people on television is essential to a dating show. Accept that and move on.

8. Everyone’s sexual preferences are valid, whether it’s Sean Lowe waiting until marriage or Kaitlyn not waiting very long at all.

9. Being sexual does not make you a bad person. Being sexual does not make you a bad person. Being sexual does not make you a bad person. (Repeat this again 100 times.)

“Yes, And”: What Making an Independent Film Taught Me About Identity, Fear and Self-Worth as a Woman

In acting, the first rule of improvisation is to say, “Yes, AND”, the idea behind it being that a scene can only move forward if you first accept the circumstances around you, and then add to them. “Yes, AND” allows for collaboration. “Yes, AND” fosters imagination. “Yes, AND” instigates progress.

For a long time, my life felt like one “No” after another. I wanted to be an actor but couldn’t even get an audition, never mind an actual role. I was working four jobs and just barely getting by. I was definitely more “starving” than “artist”.

I was losing the “game” that is getting work as an actor. The truth is that I wasn’t trying very hard to play it. I didn’t like the rules. As a woman, I felt like I was expected to live up to an imaginary ideal perpetuated by the oversimplified narrative most female characters are placed into. I remember one particularly painful audition that required all the actresses to bring bikinis with them. Usually I would have fled from kind of request, but it was for a reputable graduate film program so, (against my better judgement) I went. I made it to the “please put your bathing suit on” phase and was then given a scene that required me to violently assault my scene partner. I asked if we could practice once or twice, just to make sure no one got hurt. Or perhaps I could just show my half-naked rage through my words? I was dismissed and received an email a few days later saying that I was “too aristocratic” for the part. I was tempted to reply “Are you sure you didn’t mean ‘too smart’?”

I thought getting an agent would help my situation, but was told again and again that I was not a “type” and therefore un-castable. It would be more accurate to say that I am not a “type” that fits into the mainstream representation of women. Where were the stories and roles that I identified with? I was stuck.

But then I got a text from my good friend, Will Sullivan. It read:

“I want to shoot a movie this summer. All improv. For zero budget. Will you produce and star in it?”

In that moment, the answer seemed obvious to me. YES. Had I ever produced a film before? No. Did I have any idea what this movie was going to be about? Of course not. But what did I have to lose?

So I said Yes. And it was in my power to make it happen. It was time to choose my own narrative.

We decided to make a film about relationships – not about falling in love, but about what it takes to make love last. Will and our cinematographer, Derek Dodge, wrote the story outline, but there was never a set script. It was up to the actors to create their own dialogue and define the arc of each scene. I had the freedom to craft a character who was in a state of change and therefore undefined by any mold. The experience was transformative for me, not only as an actor and first time producer, but as a young woman who felt like she needed to re-define her sense of self. It scared me, so I knew it was important.

My greatest obstacle has always been fear. Fear of imperfection, fear of being wrong, fear of failing. This project taught me that there is no better cure for fear than action. As we hurtled towards production, I oscillated between thrill and absolute terror. I had no idea what I was doing but I had to do it anyway. Everyday I woke up feeling like I was in full relevé on the edge of a cliff. The only way to forward was to jump. There were moments of soaring and moments of falling hard on my face. I learned, though, that even if I fell, at least I had found the ground. I could get up and keep going. Three days before our shoot started, I cut off all my hair. I did it for the part, but I also did it for me. While the deed itself was superficial, it symbolized the letting go of an image I felt I was expected to fit into. I was released from who I thought I should be, and free to figure out who I could be.

What started as a text message is now a feature film, That’s Not Us, set to be released later this year. Making it was a gift of self-discovery – as a leader, as a woman, as an artist, and as an imperfect being who still has much to learn. I had the privilege of being able to make mistakes and learn by doing. To me, that is the true essence of independent film. It’s about creating work on your own terms, exploding the mold, and saying “yes, and” to the opportunities that come with attempting the unknown.

That’s Not Us premieres at the Inside Out Film Festival in Toronto on May 23rd, 2015. Follow them on Facebook, Twitter, or visit their website at www.thatsnotus.com

We Are in a Wonder Woman Moment

My 2-year old daughter plays on the beach in a tiny red, white and blue swimsuit, her chest emblazoned with a winged yellow “W” that needs no explanation. Unlike Dora the Explorer and Ariel the Mermaid, cutesy characters popular with the toddler set, Wonder Woman is a full-grown Amazon, created in 1941 by William Moulton Marston to serve as “psychological propaganda for the new type of woman who should rule the world.”

Yet, the kiddie bathing suit didn’t come from a hipster purveyor of “feminist baby clothing,” but mass-market Old Navy, advertised without apparent contradiction alongside pink sparkly ballerina dresses and “Daddy’s Little Girl” pajamas. Similarly, Under Armour, the sports-apparel giant with the macho street cred of being the official NFL outfitter, has authored a “womanifesto,” enacted in part in the release of fitted Wonder Woman tops and SuperGirl sports bras. Warner Brothers will begin shooting a Wonder Woman feature film this fall.

Seventy-four years after Wonder Woman’s birth, we are in the throes of a full-blown Wonder Woman moment.

Three new, very different books participate in this Wonder Woman frenzy and try to explain it. Together, Debora Spar’s Wonder Women: Sex, Power, and the Quest for Perfection (2013), Jill Lepore’s The Secret History of Wonder Woman (2014), and Noah Berlatsky’s Wonder Woman: Bondage and Feminism in the Marston/Peter Comics, 1941-48 (2015) pose common questions: Who is Wonder Woman? What is Wonder Woman’s relationship with the history and, more excitingly, the future of feminism, particularly in a moment when women are both exhausted and excited by the desire to gracefully have and do “it all,” superhero-style?

Spar never mentions Wonder Woman, but her legacy is clear for contemporary women in the near-manic pursuit of superwoman status in the form of the perfect job, family, hair and waistline undertaken by many girls and women in our so-called “postfeminist” era. It is Spar’s unlikely status as a feminist theorist –she at one point describes feminism as a movement “greedy to its core” — that yields Wonder Women’s freshest and most jarring insights. She engages feminist theory seriously, even if to express disappointment with what it offers today’s women and girls hell-bent on achieving Wonder Woman status.

For example, Spar concedes that conventional notions of beauty primarily function to oppress women, but declares it unrealistic to jettison the demands of the beauty-industrial complex. Indeed, she acknowledges that amid her intense responsibilities, she expends energy taming her curly, ethnic hair into what is widely, if problematically, considered a more professional style. Spar supplements this apparently mundane admission with a fascinating calculation: over a lifetime, women lose five years attending to basic ministrations like manicures and makeup which, by middle age, intensify into a veritable “arms race of enforced youth.” These facts are unsurprising, though Spar’s honesty is: Admitting participation in mainstream beauty culture has been rightly called the last feminist taboo, and is rarely addressed beyond shadowy corners of the feminist blogosphere. This is a notable contribution given abundant research indicating that women of all backgrounds devote economic and emotional energy to their physical appearances.

But as the historical treatments offered by Lepore, and even more so, Berlatsky, show, Spar’s coiffed, overachieving, wife-to-be is definitively not the evil-avenging, otherworldly, ambiguously-but-explicitly sexual Wonder Woman that Marston envisioned. The two might converge in the marketplaces of 2015, but this speaks primarily to the fluidity of Wonder Woman as a cultural symbol, rather than to her limits.

Historian Jill Lepore explores the “secret history” of both Wonder Woman the comic book series and Wonder Woman the cultural icon. Through extensive archival research and in luminous prose, Lepore primarily traces the career and personal life of Marston, who conceptualized Wonder Woman in the early 1940s. Most salaciously, Lepore reveals his secret, “non-conformist” polyamorous domestic arrangement, which included not only Sadie Elizabeth Holloway, his wife and longtime sweetheart, but also Olive Byrne, his undergraduate student who mothered two of his children, and other itinerant “love leaders” who convened at gatherings Lepore calls a “sexual training camp.”

Wonder Woman emerged from this bizarre world, representing Marston’s fantasies, failures and contradictions. Imagined to incarnate a feminist ideal of the perfect admixture of love, power and beauty, Wonder Woman was intended to counteract masculine exemplars of brutishness and indelicacy. In 1972, Gloria Steinem reflected on the Wonder Woman comics of her childhood and felt “amazed by the strength of their feminist message.” This is precisely the legacy one imagines Marston hoped for. By contrast, a central purpose of Lepore’s narrative seems to be to qualify the legitimacy of Marston’s feminism. For his supposed innovations in the field of psychology, Lepore points out his unseemly affinity for manipulating the emotional responses of young women. For the radical potential of Marston’s rejection of bourgeois marriage, Lepore intimates an environment of manipulation and duplicity.

Berlatsky, an expert in comics conversant in queer theory, arrives at almost the opposite conclusion through his close interpretation of Wonder Woman’s comic panels: Marston successfully reconciled the apparently incongruous acts of binding women in chains (among other ostensibly demeaning actions) and empowering them. Marston emerges as a creative genius, pioneering acceptance of female, alternative and queer sexualities a good three decades before the sexual revolution — and in a comic book, of all places. Berlatsky wholly rejects Lepore’s argument that the explicit examples of binding, chaining and whipping furnish clear evidence of the line where Marston’s feminism faded into fetish. To make this point, Berlatsky turns to feminist theories of rape to argue that even violent submission can bring erotic pleasure to apparent victims. In depictions of rape and incest, however, it requires a major analytical leap to discern the “feminist vision… at the heart” of Marston’s vision. At the same time, Berlatsky’s insightful interpretation of the comics illuminates many subtle examples of sexualized content that, taken together, convincingly suggest a liberatory agenda not apparent in Lepore’s reading.

A shared engagement with the cultural product that is Wonder Woman unites these three diverse books. It is truly remarkable to consider that the same symbol can plausibly suggest hypersexual lesbian ecstasy (Berlatsky) and symbolize the supremely conventional dream of a “white wedding… in Vera Wang” (Spar). Wonder Woman represents at once everything and nothing, but thanks to these three books, we now have a much better sense of who exactly is inspiring us, and how we might embrace, but not enforce, Wonder Woman’s example on ourselves, each other and our girls.
