2018 Cannes Film Festival: ‘Wonder Woman’ Director Patty Jenkins Wins 2018 Women in Motion Award

WONDER WOMAN: With the Cannes International Film Festival set to open on May 8, this year’s Women in Motion award will go to American film director and screenwriter Patty Jenkins – director of films including “Monster” and “Wonder Woman,” the highest-grossing film ever directed by a woman – Kering announced Friday.
The “Wonder Woman” sequel, helmed by Jenkins, as well, is currently in preproduction. The director also recently wrapped production on her TNT six-episode, limited drama “One Day She’ll Darken,” on which she also serves as executive producer.
Kering chief François-Henri Pinault will present the prize at a dinner hosted by the luxury group during the festival on May 13, joined by the film festival’s president and general delegate, Pierre Lescure and Thierry Frémaux.
“The past year has represented in many ways a turning point in the fight for gender equality,” Pinault said in a statement, lauding the changes Jenkins “has brought about, as much in the film industry as in the performances.”
“A true source of inspiration for new generations of women in cinema, she has shown them that anything is possible. And because with “Wonder Woman” she has shaped such a true superhero, she has enabled the young generations to imagine a world that can be saved by

‘Wonder Woman’ Actress Gal Gadot Teams Up with Reebok to Encourage Physical Fitness

BUSY GAL: Reebok has recruited “Wonder Woman” actress Gal Gadot for a new partnership.
In an assortment of images, the “Wonder Woman” actress shows off her strength wearing items from the brand’s training collection. Working out is fundamental for her. Aside from having a mother who worked as a physical education teacher, the Israeli-born, 32-year-old served for two years as a combat instructor in the Israel Defense Forces. The mother of two has opted for some physically demanding roles too such as “Fast & Furious” and “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.” Gadot’s strength training will presumably be ramping up in the months ahead, since “Wonder Woman 2” is slated to hit theaters in November 2019.
As for her own workout regime, “my trainer and I make sure to keep our training regime as diverse as possible so it keeps it different and fun. I lift weights, cardio and boxing. We also focus on flexibility,” she said via e-mail.
With 17.6 million Instagram followers, Gadot joins the ranks of Gigi Hadid, Victoria Beckham, Ariana Grande and other widely followed women who work with Reebok. For its newest celebrity-supported campaign, Reebok tapped photographer Collier Schorr.
Hired to reinforce Reebok’s “Be More Human” mantra, Gadot said via

Stevie Wonder Takes a Knee ‘for America’ in Solidarity After Trump’s Colin Kaepernick Tirade

Stevie Wonder took to his knee in solidarity with Colin Kaepernick and other athletes who previously knelt during the national anthem to protest police brutality against African-Americans.

Before performing hits such as “Higher Ground” and “Overjoyed” at Global Citizen Festival in New York City on Saturday, the 67-year-old singer started his headlining set by addressing the controversy reignited by President Donald Trump’s most recent remarks about NFL player who kneel during the national anthem.

“Tonight, I’m taking a knee for America,” Wonder said as he knelt with his son Kwame Morris. “Not just one knee, but I’m taking both knees. Both knees in prayer for our planet, our future, leaders of our world and our globe. Amen.”

He added, “I wanted to say that prayer before I serve you my musical meal.”

During a rally speech in Alabama on Friday, Trump stated, “Wouldn’t you love to see one of these NFL owners, when somebody disrespects our flag, say, ‘Get that son of a b–ch off the field right now. Out, you’re fired.’”

He followed this up by pouring more gasoline on the fire with a series of tweets. “If a player wants the privilege of making millions of dollars in the NFL, or other leagues, he or she should not be allowed to disrespect…our Great American Flag (or Country) and should stand for the National Anthem,” he wrote. “If not, YOU’RE FIRED. Find something else to do!”

Numerous celebrities — including Diddy — have also joined in standing behind the players, causing a resurgence of the #TakeAKnee hashtag on social media.

In August 2016, San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick made headlines for refusing to stand for the national anthem.

“I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color,” Kaepernick said at the time. “To me, this is bigger than football and it would be selfish on my part to look the other way. There are bodies in the street and people getting paid leave and getting away with murder.”

Chris Hemsworth Has No Doubt Wonder Woman Would ‘Kick Thor’s Ass’

With a record-breaking opening weekend and stellar reviews, Wonder Woman is certainly having a moment. And while some men nationwide are having temper tantrums about women-only screenings of the female-led film, other men are totally aware of how fantastic the film, and its leading lady, really are. So, who’s the newest dude to hop on the Wonder Woman train? None other than the one who plays Marvel Comics’ Thor, Chris Hemsworth.

Wonder Woman’s lead actress Gal Gadot paid a visit to Katie Couric, and used the opportunity to call out Hemsworth and ask him if he thinks her Wonder Woman would win a fight against his Thor. (Check it out in the video below.)

Hemsworth responded accordingly on Twitter, saying that he thinks Wonder Woman would, in fact, “kick Thor’s a**.”

And the conversation didn’t stop there. Couric agreed and Gadot followed up, saying she “always knew” Hemsworth was a “smart guy,” and suggesting that their two worlds ought to collide.

We’ll be waiting with the popcorn.

Fox News Mulls Over Whether Wonder Woman Is ‘American’ Enough

As “Wonder Woman” garners stellar ratings and remains on track for a record-breaking opening weekend, a Fox News panel is conducting a deep dive into a critical matter: Is the Amazonian princess American enough?

Fox host Neil Cavuto noted on Friday to guest Dion Baia that “some” have been taking issue with the film’s alleged lack of patriotism — chiefly, that the superhero’s costume color scheme is too un-American.

“Some are calling it less American, Dion, because, well, her outfit isn’t red, white, and blue, and, in order to appeal for foreign audiences, very little reference to America at all,” said the “Your World With Neil Cavuto” host.

“I think, nowadays, sadly, money trumps patriotism,” Baia replied. “Especially, recently, I personally feel like we’re not really very patriotic, the country, in a certain sense. And they want these movies to succeed internationally, you know, so they’re going to dial back.”

Fellow guest Mike Gunzelman lamented that he feels “it’s cool to hate America these days.”

Baia, for his part, said his comments have been misconstrued. “Taken outta context much?” he tweeted Saturday, referencing an Entertainment Weekly article that characterized him as being “upset” with the movie (probably because he used the word “sadly.”)

He maintained he was simply explaining why he believes the movie’s American patriotism was “toned down.”

But in any case, criticism of Gadot’s costume as not looking “American” is a little weak.

A red, blue and gold color combination is still fairly reminiscent of the American flag. Gold is often incorporated into patriotic decorations and accessories, and sometimes used in place of white.

The original comic and Lynda Carter’s iconic Wonder Woman costume from the 1970s TV series both included more gold than white.

Yes, Gadot’s Wonder Woman is not wearing a bottom piece adorned with little white stars, but she is wearing a top with an emblem of an eagle, which is, you know, a major symbol for the United States.

Plus, the actual plot of the movie involves Wonder Woman teaming up with an American pilot to stop German forces, which makes equating it with “hating America” a bit of a stretch.

Whatever. There have been worse takes on the movie.

‘Wonder Woman’ Trolls Its Male Killjoys With Poise And Wit

Men on the internet will leave no female-fronted blockbuster unturned. Until a few days ago, the fervor surrounding “Wonder Woman,” which opens this weekend after two decades of false starts and personnel changes, felt tame on the grown-males-whining front. As long as Wonder Woman isn’t busting ghosts, she’ll be fine. Unless, of course, a theater announces no-boys-allowed screenings. Then it’s war.

It seems the folks responsible for “Wonder Woman” anticipated a macho tussle somewhere along the movie’s Amazonian journey to the big screen. After all, the internet provides well-trod platforms for fanboys ― and I do mean boys ― who are hyper-reactive to any feminine updates to their childhood staples. Wonder Woman, as an entity, should have been bulletproof, considering the strong-willed heroine dates back to her 1941 DC Comics debut, which spawned multiple animated adaptations and the popular 1970s television series starring Lynda Carter. Oh, we of little faith. Patty Jenkins, the first woman to direct a major superhero movie, and screenwriter Allan Heinberg surely foresaw the same juvenile gender divide that haunts the Hollywood franchise machine. Never devolving into a didactic sermon about feminism, “Wonder Woman” chides its male mudslingers with humor and grace.

Once the titular Amazon princess (Gal Gadot), known colloquially as Diana Prince, leaves her remote island to join Army captain Steve Trevor (Chris Pine) on World War I’s virile London battleground, her self-empowering seclusion clashes with the modern metropolis’ heteronormative standards. (Mind you, this comes after Diana and her fleet massacre the German soldiers who’ve washed ashore with Steve.) Having grown up surrounded only by warrior women, Diana carries no baggage about how she should behave in relation to male acquaintances. As she and Steve set sail, he says it’s only appropriate that he sleep in separate quarters of the boat. Diana can’t understand why it should matter ― temptation is of no concern to her, even as their chemistry simmers. Steve assumes this means she is unschooled in carnal matters, but oh no: Diana knows all about “reproductive biology” and “pleasures of the flesh,” having read “all 12 volumes of Cleo’s treatises on body and pleasure.” This yields her fiercest conclusion about the weaker sex: Men are essential for procreation but expendable in matters of bliss, erotic or otherwise.

Without devaluing its penis-toting characters, “Wonder Woman” continues this soft battle of the sexes across its 2.5-hour runtime. Diana becomes our surrogate for a world where women don’t even entertain the expectations of men. When she’s introduced to Steve’s “secretary,” the plucky Etta Candy (Lucy Davis), whose duties entail whatever Steve asks of her, Diana likens the role to slavery. During her plot to stop the god Ares from wreaking more wartime havoc, Diana scolds a pompous general for not fighting alongside his troops, like the matrons of her native Themyscira would. At every turn, dudes inform her that circumstances are too “dangerous.” Nevertheless, she persists, aided by her signature Lasso of Truth, god-killing sword and bullet-shielding bracelets. When Diana is prepared to execute the man she thinks is Ares, Steve tells her, “I can’t let you do that.” “What I do is not up to you,” she counters. She doesn’t need textbook feminism because she’d never conceptualized a pretense where men were superior in the first place. In Diana’s universe, an all-women movie screening would be another ordinary night out.

By the time Diana disrobes to reveal her tightly cropped Wonder Woman suit in all its glory, it is an act of power. She runs circles around the boys who tell her they “can’t save everyone in this war.” It comes as no surprise that the woman in “Wonder Woman” remains the victor, but Jenkins and Heinberg effectively pepper the movie with a winking sense of humor about the number of gents who doubt Diana’s facilities. Gadot and Pine are in on the joke too, tempering their performances so gamely that “Wonder Woman” almost becomes a buddy comedy. The final 20 minutes disintegrate into the same noisy CGI spectacle that concludes all comic-book movies, but this particular superhero outing is judicious and charming enough to rise above its genre hurdles.

Whether the angry internet men-children will skip “Wonder Woman” because of the Alamo Drafthouse screening or any other gender-related nonsense ― well, who cares, really. Advance tracking for the movie’s opening weekend indicates heftier interest among male moviegoers than female moviegoers, according to The Hollywood Reporter, so the sound and fury will likely amount to little. Jenkins, who is best known for the Charlize Theron vehicle “Monster,” isn’t trying to prove anything other than her (already proven) ability to make a quality movie. On that front, she has succeeded. For added kicks, she also trolled the men who would doubt her along the way. Wonderful, woman.

“Wonder Woman” opens June 2.

The First ‘Wonder Woman’ Reactions Are Everything You Hoped For

This is a super-powered relief.

Following the critical failures of “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” and “Suicide Squad,” things weren’t looking good for the next installment in the DC Extended Universe, “Wonder Woman.”

Yeah, the trailers looked great, but remember how beloved the “Suicide Squad” trailer was? A lackluster movie can ruin a great trailer pretty fast. Claims from a supposed insider that the “Wonder Woman” movie was a “mess,” which director Patty Jenkins refuted, also didn’t help things.

But according to the initial social media reactions, Jenkins was right.

(Brush those haters off.)

“Wonder Woman” won’t be out for a couple more weeks, but critics’ first reactions to the movie are in, and they’re “fantastic.” They’ve called the movie “surprisingly good,” “absolutely empowering” and recounted stories of young girls at the screening emphatically saying, “YES!” (Aw!)

Wonder Woman herself, actress Gal Gadot, is also earning a lot of praise, being called a “legit movie star” and “perfect” in the role.

These reactions are a big win for fans of the comic character, for Warner Bros. and for young kids who can soon see a female superhero do what the guys recently couldn’t: kick butt and make a great DC movie.

See the reactions below:

See Wonder Woman Grow Up To Be A Badass In New Trailer

Diana Prince wasn’t just born a Wonder Woman; she trained rigorously to become a fierce Amazon warrior.

In the newest “Wonder Woman” trailer released Saturday, the DC Extended Universe gives us a glimpse into Diana’s life in the paradise of Themyscira.

Unlike the action-packed “Wonder Woman” trailer released last year that took us to World War I, this new trailer focuses more on the princess’s training and her journey to fulfill her sacred duty.

Actress Gal Gadot shared the trailer on Twitter over the weekend and, according to Trailer Track, this may be the last one we’ll see before the movie debuts this summer.

Wonder What Hillary Clinton And Kate McKinnon Talked About At Dinner

On Wednesday, reportedly just before catching a Broadway show-slash-lovefest at the Palace Theatre, Hillary Clinton went out to dinner. Accompanying her was “Saturday Night Live” star and professional Clinton impersonator Kate McKinnon.

Page Six revealed a photo of the event, which the outlet said involved “lots of laughter” coming from the women’s table at New York’s Orso.

Clinton has shown herself to be a fan of McKinnon’s comedic impressions in the past, appearing on the show in late 2015. McKinnon has also shown herself a fan of Clinton’s, using the typically punchy cold-open on “SNL” after Nov. 8 to sing a heartbreaking rendition of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah.”

Wonder what they talked about.

Outside of gifting fruitcake, kissing under the mistletoe may be the most curious holiday tradition people observe.

So why do people hang up the white-berried plant every year and smooch when they’re under it? In the TED-Ed video above, botanist Carlos Reif schools viewers on the mythology and biology of the mysterious “kissing plant.”

“With its resilience and foliage that stays lush even while the surrounding trees lose their leaves, mistletoe fascinated our ancestors,” Reif explains. “They saw this as signs of the plant’s magical qualities and fertility.”

See Wonder Woman And Lex Luthor In New ‘Batman V Superman’ Photos

Batman and Superman won’t face off until next year, but the two superheroes are already making their presence known in a major way.

In addition to their appearance at San Diego Comic-Con next week, Ben Affleck’s Bruce Wayne and Henry Cavill’s Clark Kent from the upcoming “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” cover this week’s issue of Entertainment Weekly. The real star of the cover, however, is Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman.

The issue of the magazine also features Affleck describing a “sexy” Bond-like scene between Wonder Woman and Batman, as well as exclusive looks at Jesse Eisenberg’s Lex Luthor (who surprisingly has a full head of hair) and Batman and Superman facing off for the first time.

Zack Snyder revealed to EW that his film actually began as an easter egg suggestion for “Man of Steel.” While in a meeting with Christopher Nolan and David S. Goyer, Snyder said, “What about at the end of the movie we do a scene where there’s a crate full of kryptonite delivered to Wayne Manor?” Then the idea turned into a full feature. “Once you say it out loud, it’s a problem, because you can’t unsay it,” Snyder told the magazine.

While we don’t know many specifics about “Batman v Superman” beyond the official synopsis and official trailer, we now know a little more about Snyder’s version of the Caped Crusader. Affleck told EW that he plays a “more embittered and cynical” Batman. “He’s on the verge of being swallowed up by the anger and the rage that we see haunt this character in the other manifestations of it,” the actor told EW.

Check out the cover photo below and the exclusive photos over at EW.com.

“Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” opens March 25, 2016.

‘Tomorrowland’ Is Full Of Wonder But Light On Meaning

“Tomorrowland” is forecasted to top the Memorial Day Weekend box office. The receipts won’t be nearly as hefty as last year’s “X-Men: Days of Future Past” or 2013’s “Fast & Furious 6,” but the movie will nonetheless become one of only a few non-franchise properties to debut at No. 1 this summer. That’s even more of a feat given how much secrecy has surrounded the film since it was green-lit in 2011. Inspired by the futuristic region of Disney’s theme parks, “Tomorrowland” is a preachy take on the apathy with which humans have treated this planet. But it is not without a deep sense of wonder that director Brad Bird (“The Incredibles,” “Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol”) presents his take on the state of the earthly union. (Bird co-wrote the script with “Lost” and “The Leftovers” co-creator Damon Lindelof, who also earns a story-by credit alongside Entertainment Weekly journalist Jeff Jensen.)

“Tomorrowland’ is a secret no more, however. The buzzy $ 190 million spectacle has two perspectives at its core: that of a young Frank Walker (Thomas Robinson), a precocious kid who attends the 1964 New York World’s Fair to present the homemade jet pack he invented. A snooty judge (Hugh Laurie) dismisses Frank’s creation after seeing it leaves some functionality to be desired. But wait! An even more precocious young girl named Athena (Raffey Cassidy) tips him off to an underground lair accessed via Disney’s “It’s a Small World” ride, and there he finds a utopian kingdom that’s two or three stylized daydreams removed from the real world. Years later, an ageless Athena tracks down Casey (Britt Robertson), a teenager living with her hothead single father (Tim McGraw) and doting little brother (Pierce Gagnon), who does everything she can to protect the nearby NASA plant from being destroyed. Casey receives a pin that, when touched, transports her — and only her — to Tomorrowland, which she comes to discover has been commandeered by that same surly judge who dismissed Frank Walker years ago. Casey tracks down a much older Frank (George Clooney) and insists they rescue this futuristic mecca from doom.

There’s a lot of plot in that paragraph, and even if it takes a while for it all to unfold, it only scrapes the surface of “Tomorrowland.” There are Big Themes about disregard and environmentalism and pissy worldviews and doomsday media culture and loss of imagination stamped all over the film. Most of them are too heavy-handed, even for a family flick. Still, we wouldn’t go so far as to say “Tomorrowland” isn’t worth your time. In fact, a lot of it is quite fun and quite refreshing given the tired tropes that both young-adult fare and summer blockbusters cannot escape.

Here are a few things that make Bird’s pageant worth your attention:

1. The three kid actors steal the show.
“Tomorrowland” has to contend with an unremarkable (possibly miscast?) George Clooney, who plays present-day Frank Walker, the cranky Tomorrowland alum who is now living in a secluded house bugged with so many whirling gizmos that it belongs in, well, a sci-fi movie. Clooney isn’t phoning it in, per se — he just doesn’t bring much to the table that any moderately gruff middle-aged actor couldn’t. Instead, count on the marvel of Britt Robertson, Thomas Robinson and especially Raffey Cassidy as the three charming kiddos at the film’s center. Robertson is its lead, despite Clooney getting top billing; she plays the young teen recruited to travel with Frank back to Tomorrowland. Robinson is a wide-eyed delight as the younger Frank in flashback scenes, and Cassidy — a Felicity Jones look-alike with small roles in “Dark Shadows” and “Snow White and the Huntsman” to her name — dominates the film as the enigmatic British lass who shepherds most of its action. Cassidy’s telling eyes are reminiscent of “Parent Trap”-era Lindsay Lohan, and she boasts the same confident comedic caliber to boot.

2. The world of Tomorrowland is deeply imaginative.
The moralizing themes of the titular tract — and the convoluted way the script presents them — weigh down the second half of “Tomorrowland,” but that only barely detracts from the stunning visuals punctuating what resembles a functional amusement park. Maglev trains look like roller-coasters zipping around a plaza of skyscrapers, while a pristine blue sky characterizes a utopia that’s both idealistic and utilitarian. Brad Bird and production designer Scott Chambliss (“Alias,” “Star Trek”) have created a landscape that begs for dreams to be dreamed and new horizons to be plowed.

britt robertson

3. Kathryn Hahn and Keegan-Michael Key make fun cameos.
The film’s action, centered on a world where collective humanity has shrugged off things like climate control and space exploration, kicks into high gear once Casey (Robertson) leaves home to figure out why she ended up with a mysterious yellow pin ornamented with a blue “T” that transports her to the faraway Tomorrowland. She finds a Texas memorabilia shop looking for the same item on eBay, and after traveling there, meets the kooky married owners whose robotic mannerisms quickly raise suspicions. They’re played by Kathryn Hahn and Keegan-Michael Key, both game to embrace the silliness of their scene, which whips out the laser guns as soon as it’s clear that these two are not what they seem. Cue clever “Star Wars” allusions throughout.

4. This is a rare non-franchise blockbuster with a great female role model at the center.
“Tomorrowland” is technically an existing property, but it doesn’t squeeze into the same franchise category as, say, “The Hunger Games” or “Divergent,” two recent literary adaptations with stellar female leads. We know nothing about the “Tomorrowland” players before the movie’s first frame, which makes it all the more rewarding to take this journey with the ambitious Casey at its helm. That shouldn’t need to be something we celebrate, but considering last year’s highest-grossing non-franchise film with a female lead was the very silly “Lucy,” it is. Vulture’s David Edelstein called this the “anti-‘Hunger Games,'” and that makes sense. Katniss Everdeen is worth rooting for, but it’s nice to spend time with a heroine whose action sequences don’t involve killing other kids or contending with the “faction” to which she must subscribe. That isn’t to say the “I’d Love to Teach the World to Sing”-style ending works, but it does add a certain freshness when a movie doesn’t need to position the female protagonist in terms of her willingness to take no prisoners or contend with “Fault in Our Stars”-esque tragedy.

britt robertson

5. Brad Bird and Co. do what most high-voltage blockbusters don’t: They manage not to overclog the action.
If there’s any reason to bypass comic-book movies — and apparently there aren’t many reasons, given their box-office stamina — it’s because most of them borrow the same plot beats and resort to similar cycles of endless action sequences sandwiched by slight exposition. But the action in “Tomorrowland” remains secondary to the plot. The script doesn’t shy away from letting its characters talk, and even with glaring contrivances, it feels like (depressingly) new terrain to see a contemporary summer blockbuster grant its characters the space to think and breathe and brainstorm. That part of Bird’s approach marks another quality that sets it apart from the many YA franchises serving action ahead of characterization.

“Tomorrowland” opens in wide release on May 22.

I Wonder About Allah Book 1

I Wonder About Allah Book 1

Have you ever wondered about Allah? Have you ever wanted to ask where Allah lives, or why you can’t see Him? How He managed to create everything and why all of creation obeys Him? These questions, and many more, are explored inside. Ozkan Oze was born in Turkey in 1974. While at high school, he started working at “Zafer Magazine”‘s editorial office in Istanbul and discovered his love of literature and books. We Are in a Wonder Woman Moment

My 2-year old daughter plays on the beach in a tiny red, white and blue swimsuit, her chest emblazoned with a winged yellow “W” that needs no explanation. Unlike Dora the Explorer and Ariel the Mermaid, cutesy characters popular with the toddler set, Wonder Woman is a full-grown Amazon, created in 1941 by William Moulton Marston to serve as “psychological propaganda for the new type of woman who should rule the world.”

Yet, the kiddie bathing suit didn’t come from a hipster purveyor of “feminist baby clothing,” but mass-market Old Navy, advertised without apparent contradiction alongside pink sparkly ballerina dresses and “Daddy’s Little Girl” pajamas. Similarly, Under Armour, the sports-apparel giant with the macho street cred of being the official NFL outfitter, has authored a “womanifesto,” enacted in part in the release of fitted Wonder Woman tops and SuperGirl sports bras. Warner Brothers will begin shooting a Wonder Woman feature film this fall.

Seventy-four years after Wonder Woman’s birth, we are in the throes of a full-blown Wonder Woman moment.

Three new, very different books participate in this Wonder Woman frenzy and try to explain it. Together, Debora Spar’s Wonder Women: Sex, Power, and the Quest for Perfection (2013), Jill Lepore’s The Secret History of Wonder Woman (2014), and Noah Berlatsky’s Wonder Woman: Bondage and Feminism in the Marston/Peter Comics, 1941-48 (2015) pose common questions: Who is Wonder Woman? What is Wonder Woman’s relationship with the history and, more excitingly, the future of feminism, particularly in a moment when women are both exhausted and excited by the desire to gracefully have and do “it all,” superhero-style?

Spar never mentions Wonder Woman, but her legacy is clear for contemporary women in the near-manic pursuit of superwoman status in the form of the perfect job, family, hair and waistline undertaken by many girls and women in our so-called “postfeminist” era. It is Spar’s unlikely status as a feminist theorist –she at one point describes feminism as a movement “greedy to its core” — that yields Wonder Women’s freshest and most jarring insights. She engages feminist theory seriously, even if to express disappointment with what it offers today’s women and girls hell-bent on achieving Wonder Woman status.

For example, Spar concedes that conventional notions of beauty primarily function to oppress women, but declares it unrealistic to jettison the demands of the beauty-industrial complex. Indeed, she acknowledges that amid her intense responsibilities, she expends energy taming her curly, ethnic hair into what is widely, if problematically, considered a more professional style. Spar supplements this apparently mundane admission with a fascinating calculation: over a lifetime, women lose five years attending to basic ministrations like manicures and makeup which, by middle age, intensify into a veritable “arms race of enforced youth.” These facts are unsurprising, though Spar’s honesty is: Admitting participation in mainstream beauty culture has been rightly called the last feminist taboo, and is rarely addressed beyond shadowy corners of the feminist blogosphere. This is a notable contribution given abundant research indicating that women of all backgrounds devote economic and emotional energy to their physical appearances.

But as the historical treatments offered by Lepore, and even more so, Berlatsky, show, Spar’s coiffed, overachieving, wife-to-be is definitively not the evil-avenging, otherworldly, ambiguously-but-explicitly sexual Wonder Woman that Marston envisioned. The two might converge in the marketplaces of 2015, but this speaks primarily to the fluidity of Wonder Woman as a cultural symbol, rather than to her limits.

Historian Jill Lepore explores the “secret history” of both Wonder Woman the comic book series and Wonder Woman the cultural icon. Through extensive archival research and in luminous prose, Lepore primarily traces the career and personal life of Marston, who conceptualized Wonder Woman in the early 1940s. Most salaciously, Lepore reveals his secret, “non-conformist” polyamorous domestic arrangement, which included not only Sadie Elizabeth Holloway, his wife and longtime sweetheart, but also Olive Byrne, his undergraduate student who mothered two of his children, and other itinerant “love leaders” who convened at gatherings Lepore calls a “sexual training camp.”

Wonder Woman emerged from this bizarre world, representing Marston’s fantasies, failures and contradictions. Imagined to incarnate a feminist ideal of the perfect admixture of love, power and beauty, Wonder Woman was intended to counteract masculine exemplars of brutishness and indelicacy. In 1972, Gloria Steinem reflected on the Wonder Woman comics of her childhood and felt “amazed by the strength of their feminist message.” This is precisely the legacy one imagines Marston hoped for. By contrast, a central purpose of Lepore’s narrative seems to be to qualify the legitimacy of Marston’s feminism. For his supposed innovations in the field of psychology, Lepore points out his unseemly affinity for manipulating the emotional responses of young women. For the radical potential of Marston’s rejection of bourgeois marriage, Lepore intimates an environment of manipulation and duplicity.

Berlatsky, an expert in comics conversant in queer theory, arrives at almost the opposite conclusion through his close interpretation of Wonder Woman’s comic panels: Marston successfully reconciled the apparently incongruous acts of binding women in chains (among other ostensibly demeaning actions) and empowering them. Marston emerges as a creative genius, pioneering acceptance of female, alternative and queer sexualities a good three decades before the sexual revolution — and in a comic book, of all places. Berlatsky wholly rejects Lepore’s argument that the explicit examples of binding, chaining and whipping furnish clear evidence of the line where Marston’s feminism faded into fetish. To make this point, Berlatsky turns to feminist theories of rape to argue that even violent submission can bring erotic pleasure to apparent victims. In depictions of rape and incest, however, it requires a major analytical leap to discern the “feminist vision… at the heart” of Marston’s vision. At the same time, Berlatsky’s insightful interpretation of the comics illuminates many subtle examples of sexualized content that, taken together, convincingly suggest a liberatory agenda not apparent in Lepore’s reading.

A shared engagement with the cultural product that is Wonder Woman unites these three diverse books. It is truly remarkable to consider that the same symbol can plausibly suggest hypersexual lesbian ecstasy (Berlatsky) and symbolize the supremely conventional dream of a “white wedding… in Vera Wang” (Spar). Wonder Woman represents at once everything and nothing, but thanks to these three books, we now have a much better sense of who exactly is inspiring us, and how we might embrace, but not enforce, Wonder Woman’s example on ourselves, each other and our girls.

Astounding Wonder

Astounding Wonder

When physicist Robert Goddard, whose career was inspired by H. G. Wells’s War of the Worlds, published “A Method of Reaching Extreme Altitudes,” the response was electric. Newspaper headlines across the country announced, “Modern Jules Verne Invents Rocket to Reach Moon,” while people from around the world, including two World War I pilots, volunteered as pioneers in space exploration. Though premature (Goddard’s rocket, alas, was only imagined), the episode demonstrated not only science’s general popularity but also its intersection with interwar popular and commercial culture. In that intersection, the stories that inspired Goddard and others became a recognizable genre: science fiction. Astounding Wonder explores science fiction’s emergence in the era’s “pulps,” colorful magazines that shouted from the newsstands, attracting an extraordinarily loyal and active audience.Pulps invited readers not only to read science fiction but also to participate in it, joining writers and editors in celebrating a collective wonder for and investment in the potential of science. But in conjuring fantastic machines, travel across time and space, unexplored worlds, and alien foes, science fiction offered more than rousing adventure and romance. It also assuaged contemporary concerns about nation, gender, race, authority, ability, and progress—about the place of ordinary individuals within modern science and society—in the process freeing readers to debate scientific theories and implications separate from such concerns.Readers similarly sought to establish their worth and place outside the pulps. Organizing clubs and conventions and producing their own magazines, some expanded science fiction’s community and created a fan subculture separate from the professional pulp industry. Others formed societies to launch and experiment with rockets. From debating relativity and the use of slang in the future to printing purple fanzines and calculating the speed of spaceships, fans’ enthusias

‘Wonder Twins’ Movie Poster Revealed To Be Fake By Creator

A poster surfaced mid-November last year touting a “Wonder Twins” movie coming in 2014 courtesy of Warner Bros. Supposedly starring couple Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher as the sibling leads, rumors of a viral marketing attempt linked to the upcoming “Entourage” movie made its rounds, threaded by the HBO show’s inclusion of an “Aquaman” movie and the film’s 2014 release date. However, Marc Tyler Nobleman, author of books on the creators of “Superman” and “Batman,” has debunked this theory, proving the “Wonder Twins” movie to be nothing more than a well-crafted hoax.

Participating in a conversation on the BatPodcast, Nobleman discovered that his host, Pat Evans, was the man behind the movie’s poster, and reversed the roles to get all the details. According to Evans, he created the poster for a bit of fun in response to the onslaught of superhero movies throughout the past few years (that will absolutely continue through 2014), deciding that the “Wonder Twins” would be a most “preposterous” film for anyone to make.

“They were perfect, because it was just unbelievable enough a concept that it could be true, if that makes sense,” Evans said. “’So crazy it might work’ kind of logic. And Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher were kind of the clincher because they are in the media a lot now as a real-life couple. So it added that extra layer of ‘huh?’”

When asked if he liked the Wonder Twins, Evans joked, “Who doesn’t love the Wonder Twins? Seriously. Just ask my kids, Zan and Jayna.”

You can read the rest of the interview on Nobleman’s blog.
