4 Things You’ll Learn About an Egyptian-Themed Sect Hiding Child Sex Abuse, on Monday’s PMI: Cults

On May 8, 2002, cult leader Dwight “Malachi” York, was arrested as he was walking into a grocery store in Eatonton, Georgia —  putting an end, authorities said, to his years of sexually abusing the children of his followers.

Soon afterward, local and federal law enforcement officers busted through the gates of “Tama-Re,” the Egyptian-themed compound of York’s United Nuwaubian Nation of Moors.

There they discovered dozens of female followers, 50 to 75 children, a stockpile of weapons and evidence of York’s sexual depravity, including a stuffed Pink Panther with a penis attached and photos taken at Florida’s Disney World where York would often take his child victims.

Authorities began investigating molestation claims against York two years earlier, when his estranged son, Jacob, and several of York’s victims came forward with accounts of slavery, starvation and sexual abuse dating back decades.

In 2004, York was convicted of five counts of racketeering and six counts of transporting minors across state lines for sexual purposes. He was sentenced to 135 years in federal prison, where he remains at 73.

His group’s history, the crimes he inflicted on others and their stories of survival will be shared on Monday night’s episode of People Magazine Investigates: Cults, airing on Investigation Discovery and exclusively previewed above.

Here are four things viewers will learn from the show.

• For more on the rise and fall of the United Nuwaubian Nation of Moors, subscribe now to PEOPLE or pick up this week’s issue, on newsstands now.

1. York Came to Power in the ’70s Preaching Black Supremacy

York, an ex-con and Harlem street peddler, started his own sect in New York City in the ’70s, where he preached a black supremacist ideology mixed with traditional Islamic doctrine.

In 1972, he moved his growing congregation into various apartments he bought in the Bushwick section of Brooklyn and called his new commune the Ansaru Allah Community.

At his headquarters, his followers strictly adhered to his teachings and beliefs. Children attended his schools, women were mandated to work in the office and his male followers were tasked with recruiting new members.

“When you were around him, you were mesmerized by him,” survivor and former member Ruby Garnett says in Monday’s episode. “He was so charismatic. It was just amazing. I thought York was a Messiah.”

York was also a staunch believer in polygamy and had sex with many of his female followers. A select group of his favorites became his wives.

Cult survivor Niki LopezMicheal Anthony Clark

“He gave me a diamond ring,” says Garnett, who wed York at the age of 19. “I was so happy, I cried. I felt special because I am looking at being in his family as a privilege — an honor of service.”

However, when Garnett learned that York had sodomized an underage female follower, her feelings curdled.

“When he told me this story about violating her, in my mind I am saying, ‘Is he testing me?’ ” she recalls. “I was terrified.”

2. York Claimed He Was Royalty

Over time, York’s need to control every aspect of his followers’ lives grew more sinister and sexually depraved, according to former members as well as law enforcement sources and news accounts.

Niki Lopez — who joined the group at age 11, with her mom — was 13 years old when her sexual grooming process began.

At first, she says, York allowed her and a few of the other kids special access to his house to watch cartoons and eat junk food.

“He would give us little treats. … He gave us T-shirts,” Lopez says on PMI: Cults. “We were like, ‘We have short-sleeved T-shirts that no one else has.’ ”

Soon, however, Lopez says she was taught how to perform oral sex by one of York’s wives, who convinced her that sex with him was a Sudanese tradition to prepare them for marriage. (York claimed at one point to be heir to the throne of Sudan.)

One night, Lopez says, she was asked to stay behind at York’s house, where he held her down and raped her. She was 15.

• For more on the abuses of Dwight “Malachi” York and the United Nuwaubian Nation of Moors, watch Monday’s People Magazine Investigates: Cults at 9 p.m. ET on Investigation Discovery.

3. York Moved to Georgia After Police Got Suspicious

As time passed, law enforcement in N.Y.C. started to probe York’s possible involvement in criminal enterprises and if his group was being funded by organized bank robberies and counterfeit checks.

As the scrutiny mounted, York moved his followers to Eatonton, Georgia, in 1993.

It was there that his teachings took a bizarre and unpredictable turn.

At first, York called himself Chief Black Thunderbird Eagle, the leader of a lost Native American tribe that fought against early European colonization. He then claimed to be an extraterrestrial from the planet Rizq. Eventually he morphed into the leader of the United Nuwaubian Nation of Moors, proclaiming a philosophy that revolved around Egyptology and UFOs.

York declared that his armed compound — which featured two 40-foot plywood and stucco pyramids and a Sphinx — was a sovereign nation and refused to follow local, state and federal laws.

By 1998, whispers of York’s sexual depravity reached local enforcement when they learned about a rash of underage Nuwaubian girls giving birth in area hospitals.

However, the turning point in the case came in 2001, when York’s estranged son as well as other followers — including Niki Lopez — came forward with their tales of abuse.

4. More Than 40 Victims Cooperated with Police

After Niki began cooperating with law enforcement, more than 40 victims spoke out to give investigators additional details of sexual and physical abuse at the hands of York, which lead to the raid on his 476-acre compound.

York was arrested and charged with multiple state and federal crimes, including more than 100 counts of child molestation, six counts of transporting minors across state lines for sexual purposes and five counts of racketeering.

He was convicted in 2004 and sentenced to 135 years in federal prison.

“It was kind of liberating,” says Lopez about testifying against York. “I felt like he can’t tell me anything. He can’t make me do anything. That was the first time of me getting my power back.”

The People Magazine Investigates: Cults episode on the United Nuwaubian Nation of Moors airs Monday (9 p.m. ET) on Investigation Discovery.

Milo Ventimiglia Talks Jack’s Death on This Is Us: ‘When the Answers Come, You’ll Be Satisfied’

This Is Us audiences don’t have all the answers — but when they do, Milo Ventimiglia believes they’ll be “satisfied.”

Since the heartbreaking season one finale aired in March, fans have been theorizing about the way in which Ventimiglia’s beloved character, Jack Pearson, passed away.

“The number one comment I get is, ‘tell me how you died,’ which stung a little bit when I would first get that question,” Ventimiglia, 39, told PEOPLE and Entertainment Weekly Editorial Director Jess Cagle for the latest episode of The Jess Cagle Interview.

RELATED VIDEO: Milo Ventimiglia & Mandy Moore Talk the ‘This Is Us’ Finale: ‘There Was a Lot of Tension on Set’

The day after the finale was televised, Ventimiglia recalled a viewer asking about father of three Jack’s on-screen death, which shook the actor emotionally.

“I remember the first time it happened was the day after the finale and I was taking a meeting and I was walking across the studio lot and a guy said to me, ‘Hey man, great show. … I was a little bummed, though. Last night, we couldn’t see how you died,’ ” Ventimiglia remembered the man telling him.

At that moment, Ventimiglia “stopped and I walked over and I put my hand out and I said, ‘I’m Milo.’ He said, ‘Hey, I’m Jim.’ I said, ‘Jim, I want you to think about what you just said. You’re upset you didn’t see a man die. I’m that man. Think about that.’ ”

Watch The Jess Cagle Interview: Milo Ventimiglia, available now, on the new People/Entertainment Weekly Network (PEN). Go to people.com/PEN, or download  the PEN app on your favorite mobile or connected  TV device.

While Ventimiglia understands that loyal fans want the mystery behind Jack’s death to be revealed sooner than later, he vows waiting for the answer to the burning question will be worth it.

“I get that it’s fresh because TV audiences are savvy. Especially in the world that we live in today — with social media and digital and internet — everybody wants all the information. They want it now,” he explained

“I feel like this show is getting back to that appointment television where you’re going to clock in once a week, you’re going to pay attention, and then guess what? You’re going to wait one more week, just seven days. So that information, that want to, that desire to say, ‘I want to know how Jack died,’ well, you’re just going to have to wait and be patient,” he said, and added, “Because when the answers come, you’ll be satisfied.”

This Is Us returns for season 2 this fall on NBC.

Club 33 Is Coming To Disney World And You’ll Want To Join Immediately

Club 33, Disneyland’s famously exclusive members-only hangout, is expanding with four new clubs at Disney World parks, a spokesperson confirmed to HuffPost.

The original Club 33 is hidden at the top of a staircase in Disneyland’s New Orleans Square, where it was originally intended as a hideaway for Walt Disney to host elite park guests. Becoming a member nowadays is nearly impossible, even if you’re ready to foot the rumored $ 25,000 membership fee and $ 12,000 in annual dues.

But soon, even more members will be able to join the fun if they choose.

There are plans to put a Club 33 outpost in each of Disney World’s four Orlando theme parks, each with its own unique look, the spokesperson said. There’s no word on membership fees or process yet, though an official announcement with more details will come in the next few weeks.

Based on what we’ve seen of Disneyland’s Club 33, these new clubs should be utterly secretive and swanky.

We are all smiles now that the entrées have arrived. #pocketpeacock #club33 #happybirthdaytome #allthefood

A post shared by Shiri Gutman (@percival_peacock_and_friends) on

There are already Club 33 locations at Shanghai Disney and Tokyo Disneyland, but these new outposts will be the first U.S. locations beyond the California park.

Stateside, Disney parks seem to be going for a more exclusive angle lately: In December, Disney World piloted a set of luxe cabanas in its Magic Kingdom park, and in January, a hidden venue called 21 Royal opened in Disneyland, where guests can host dinner parties for $ 15,000 per night.

We may never be able to afford these experiences, but they certainly add to the allure that makes a Disney visit so magical. Here’s hoping we score an invite soon!

You’ll Wish You Scored An Invite To This State Fair-Themed Wedding

Texas sure knows how to throw a good party.

On March 25, Evan and Melissa Tate of Rockwall, Texas hosted a huge state fair-themed wedding reception at a 700-acre horse and cattle ranch owned by the groom’s family.

The celebration, which included a 700-person guest list, was aptly called: “Tate Fair of Texas.”

“I have always loved the State Fair of Texas and dreamed of it somehow tying into my wedding day,” the bride told The Huffington Post.

“We started hosting weddings to the public [at the ranch] a couple of years ago. I knew I wanted to get married on the farm but I didn’t want to lose the connection to the state fair ― so we just brought it here!” she added.

The big day featured all the Texas state fair essentials: A Ferris wheel, Fletcher’s Corny Dogs and livestock, too.

The couple even set up their own creative arts building. “That’s where people place their entries for photo contests, art contests and sculptures,” Melissa explained to ABC News.

“It’s in this really poorly lit building, and it’s just old school,” she said.

Instead of art entries, the space was filled with pictures of the couple, each bearing a prize ribbon to fit in with the theme.

Guests also feasted on turkey legs, brisket nachos, a popcorn bar and cotton candy.

The newlyweds couldn’t be more thrilled with how their big day panned out.

“We really just wanted to throw a party for our friends that reflected our love and our relationship,” Melissa told HuffPost. “And we wanted to celebrate that with them.”

A week prior to the blowout bash, the Tates exchanged vows in an intimate ceremony outside of the house where the groom grew up, with only about 50 family members present.

“This is the second marriage for both of us and I wanted it to be intimate, giving us time to really engage with our families,” she said. “I knew that wouldn’t happen at a party of the size we wanted for our reception.”

Afterwards, the newlyweds sat down with their families for a brunch complete with Bloody Marys and biscuits.

The couple, who met in 2014 through a mutual friend, actually got engaged at the State Fair of Texas last year.

“It was so busy, and the whole crowd saw what was happening, and I dropped to my knee,” Evan told ABC News. “She said yes, and then the crowd broke into cheers all around. It was wonderful.”

Below, more photos from the couple’s big day:

To help you better understand this post-post-apocalyptic adventure, here are some elements from movies and games that it most reminds me of. If you like these, Horizon Zero Dawn could be a perfect match.

Lara Croft and Aloy Both Aloy and the rebooted version of Lara Croft wield bows

The ’90s was the era that birthed one of the defining virtual characters of a generation: Lara Croft. Her ability to down a T-Rex with a pair of pistols instantly won our hearts in a gaming climate barely touched by oestrogen, and Aloy is cut from the same cloth.

If You Like ‘Heathers,’ You’ll Love This Sundance Movie

The buzz that travels from the Sundance Film Festival bubble to the real world every January typically revolves around a small crop of Oscar hopefuls. But for every “Boyhood,” there’s an “Obvious Child” ― a discovery with passionate fans who want to shout its name from the cinematic rooftops. For me, this year’s was “Thoroughbred.”

Sleek and delicious, “Thoroughbred” is a 90-minute romp through the spoils of suburbia, where decadent facades conceal murderous impulses. It blends the popular-girl pastiche of “Heathers” with the sensual psychodrama of Ingmar Bergman’s “Persona.”

Writer and director Cory Finley cast two self-proclaimed “Sundance kids” in his debut feature. Olivia Cooke, the dying girl in “Me and Earl and the Dying Girl,” plays Amanda, a sociopathic Connecticut teenager who’s become a social leper after slaying her family’s horse. Sharp and resourceful, Amanda rehearses emotions but feels nothing. Anya Taylor-Joy, the witch in “The Witch,” plays Lily, an estranged junior-high friend who reconnects with Amanda for study sessions. In truth, Amanda’s mother has paid Lily to spend time with her daughter as a sort of arranged playdate. Lily is the picture-perfect classmate, preppy and beautiful and poised ― or so it seems. One problem: It’s driving Lily mad to live with her vicious stepfather (Paul Sparks), who wants to ship her off to a boarding school for troublemakers.

“Thoroughbred” was first a play, which Finley wrote as a “conversation about the relationship between emotions and morality.” In keeping, Amanda and Lily’s tainted virtues weigh heavily on the movie. Both are seeking relief from their prosaic realities. As often seen in teenagers, the more time they spend together, the more Amanda and Lily’s personalities merge. And then, like a spark, they hatch a plan to murder Lily’s stepfather with the help of a local drug dealer (a manic Anton Yelchin, in his final screen role).

“I thought it was interesting to set this story in a world that might be very morally insulating, but to have characters who are of an age where they’re just starting to build their own value systems,” Finley said.

As “Thoroughbred” continues, Amanda shows possible glimmers of normalcy, while Lily’s temperament grows more cutthroat. Early in the film, Finley employs a standard shot/reverse-shot dialogue technique to place the girls on opposite sides of every conversation. By the end, they occupy the frame together, opposing the forces that cross their paths. All the while, Erik Friedlander’s tribal score ― reminiscent of “The Witch” ― crescendos toward a bloody climax.

“As the movie goes on, we start to resemble each other,” Taylor-Joy said. “It’s like we move in sync. My voice gets deeper, and I start speaking in a similar way that Amanda does. … Lily’s on this level of tension, but underneath this perfectly composed and preppy little girl, I just thought, ‘It must be bloody exhausting to keep that up all the time, and there must be something going on underneath all of that that she’s repressed.’ She’s really lonely and she’s just in a toxic situation that I think is starting to seep into her own skin.”

For the work of a first-time director, “Thoroughbred” is remarkably assured, mastering its satirical tone and portraying suburbia as a demented WASP playground. Finley cited “Mulholland Drive,” the David Lynch thriller with similar themes, as his inspiration for becoming a filmmaker. Elements of “Mulholland” are evident in “Thoroughbred,” as are hallmarks of “The Shining,” chiefly in eerie long takes that snake through Lily’s palatial home. The ending of Finley’s movie is less enigmatic than those two, but the director was deliberate in leaving Amanda and Lily’s psychology open to interpretation.

Cooke was drawn to the role because it’s the antithesis of “Me and Earl and the Dying Girl” and the “Psycho” prequel series “Bates Motel,” in which she portrays hyper-emotional teens. As for Taylor-Joy, Lily complements her work in “The Witch” and M. Night Shyamalan’s “Split,” in which she personifies young women who refuse to become victims of their gloomy circumstances. Cooke and Taylor-Joy are aces in this movie, their characters peeling away at layers, as if in a constant tug-of-war with themselves, each other and the viewer.

“I would hesitate to boil any part of their motivations down to any single factor,” Finley said. “But I think who these characters are, as is true with all of us, is a mix of where they grew up, the people they grew up around, something ineffable about the way they were born, just how they were put on Earth, and then their influence on one another. I think that’s the key piece in that motivational puzzle. But I also hope that it’s a cause for discussion among audiences and people come away with their own takes.”

Focus Features bought “Thoroughbred” at Sundance for a reported $ 5 million.

New Year’s Resolutions You’ll Actually Want to Keep

2017-01-06-1483736454-8486750-Resolutions.jpg

By A. E. Colas, ZEALnyc Contributing Writer, January 9, 2017

New Year’s resolutions are a great idea. You say to yourself, “It’s going to be different this year — I’m ready for a change!” We’re now a week into the new year and you’re finding yourself falling back into old patterns and nothing new is happening. Well ZEALnyc understands your dilemma and we’re offering some very simple ideas that can still get your 2017 off to a terrific start.

Resolution 1: In 2017, I’d like to dress better.

2017-01-06-1483736846-5505049-bfdatFIT.png

Head on over to The Museum at FIT (the downtown fashion institute) and see Black Fashion Designers, an exhibit that will give you just the inspiration you need. This exhibition, which is curated by Ariele Elia and Elizabeth Way, may also keep you from making some mistakes in judgement before hitting the post holiday sales. The exhibition runs through May 16th. For more information click here.

Resolution 2: This year, I should really learn something more about New York City.

2017-01-06-1483736969-5158617-GayGothamEventHero.jpg

Through February 26, you can learn about the city’s role in creating a place for the gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender communities during the 20th century. The Museum of the City of New York’s exhibit Gay Gotham explains how much of the work in the arts of the United States we accept as classic examples today were created by these visionaries who also just happened to be non-heterosexual. For more information click here.

Resolution 3: I want learn how artists make work that is relevant to the world around them.

2017-01-06-1483737081-9438679-StudioMuseum.gif

In the 1970’s many artists chose to focus exclusively on social issues of the day. The Studio Museum in Harlem has a powerful exhibit called Circa 1970 displaying these pieces in various media. Consider how this past year has looked in terms of artistic achievement and compare it to that earlier time. The exhibition runs through March 5, and if you haven’t been before, it affords a great opportunity to take in this museum, founded in 1968 “…for the dynamic exchange of ideas about art and society.” The Studio Museum in Harlem is on 125th Street, just east of Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Boulevard. For more information click here.

Resolution 4: I should waste less and recycle more.

2017-01-06-1483737210-9854389-CooperHewitt.jpg

Through April 16, see how designers and business owners handle the issues of waste and reuse at the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum. Scraps: Fashion, Textiles, and Creative Reuse shows that through innovative thinking and practice, waste at all levels of production can be reduced to near zero. It will definitely help you remember to take your own worn out textiles to the recycle locations at farmers’ markets around the city. Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum is on Fifth Avenue at 91st Street. For more information click here.

Resolution 5: I want to appreciate the finer things in life.

2017-01-06-1483738987-1257054-Frick.jpg

Visit the Frick Collection’s exhibit of Pierre Gouthière: Virtuoso Gilder at the French Court through February 19 and marvel at the skills used to create objects that decorated the court residences of the kings of France. Then go home and look at your chipped Ikea furniture. For more information click here.

Resolution 6: I need to do more to support conservation issues.

2017-01-06-1483739079-1642567-MAD.jpg

Anybody can go scuba diving and see coral reefs in all their glory. But it takes a creative mind to actually make a coral reef replica (in crochet, no less) and get it displayed in a museum. Visit the Museum of Arts and Design at 2 Columbus Circle to see Crochet Coral Reef: TOXIC SEAS and admire the craftsmanship. This exhibition, a product of sisters Margaret and Christine Wertheim and their Institute for Figuring, runs through January 22. For more information click here. Then text a few bucks to a reputable conservation charity.

Resolution 7: I should travel.

2017-01-06-1483739190-3454442-Rubin.jpg

Then start your journey at The Rubin Museum of Art and their exhibit Masterworks of Himalayan Art. Among other things, you can go on a virtual pilgrimage to Mount Wutai, a sacred site in Buddhist teaching, located in Northern China. Start a bank account for travel with automatic deposits from your paycheck. The Rubin Museum of Art is off Seventh Avenue at 17th Street. This exhibition runs through February 6. For more information click here.

Resolution 8: I want to learn from the best.

2017-01-06-1483739283-9567649-martinscorsesemomi04720x480.jpg

Take a trip out to Queens to see the exhibit Martin Scorsese at the Museum of the Moving Image. The memorabilia from childhood to his work on such classic films as Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, and Gangs of New York, to name just a few, is impressive and gives insight into the creative process of this giant of American cinema. After you’re done, go see his new film Silence. The museum is at 36-01 35 Avenue in Astoria, and is easily accessible by the R/M and N/W subway lines. The exhibition runs through April 23. For more information click here.

You’ll Recognize Britney Spears’ Rumored New Man From Her Steamy Music Video

If pictures are worth a thousand words, then this photo of Britney Spears and her rumored new man Sam Asghari has to tell us something, right?

The singer was spotted out and about at dinner with Asghari, her co-star from her “Slumber Party” video, over the weekend. The hunky trainer shared a since-deleted photo of the two on Instagram that showed them wearing matching black T-shirts while Spears stuck her tongue out.

The goofy picture is a far cry from the steamy moments the two share in “Slumber Party.” In one particular scene, Spears crawls across a table toward a seated Asghari, licking the spilled milk in front of him.

The 34-year-old “Make Me” singer was last linked to Charlie Ebersol in 2015, with whom she split after about eight months of dating. Like most of us, Spears revealed she has some anxiety about putting herself out there, telling Marie Claire earlier this month she once lost six pounds before a date

“I had a really bad date. I mean, it was really bad. I’ve been single for ages and had a date with a guy I liked,” Spears said. “I was getting anxious, worrying he wouldn’t like me. In the evening, I got on the scales and I had lost six pounds. We went to the movies, but I could tell right away it wasn’t working. It was sort of awkward. So after the movie I came home and that was it.”

The singer added, “He just wasn’t that into me. I liked him. He knew that. But he definitely didn’t feel the same. It happens to everybody. Being famous doesn’t make you any different.”

The Colors You’ll Be Wearing Next Spring: Rose Quartz, Buttercup, and More

Sometimes the world of fashion has a bit of a crystal ball element to it—hello, we’re all talking about spring 2016 now, before we’ve even started this fall! The color pros at Pantone traditionally reside as the seers who are providing our futuristic peek, releasing reports on what colors we’ll be seeing a lot of in the future. They just wrapped up their research and have issued the official word on what’s going to be hot for spring 2016.

pantone-colors-spring-2016-swatches-sized

All colors are not created equally either. Rose Quartz is the number one shade, with 22.55% of designers using it in their spring ’16 collections. Peach Echo, Serenity, Snorkel Blue, and Buttercup round out the rest of the top five. Per the experts, this means we’re all searching for some peace.

“Serenity is a calming color that plays to the whole idea that we know we’re still living in turbulent times,” Pantone Color Institute executive director Leatrice Eiseman told WWD. “Buttercup is all about sunlight, happiness and cheer. This one just speaks to give us a ray of sunshine, something to be hopeful about.”

MORE: The Best Colors to Wear on a Job Interview, First Date, and More

Eiseman is a friend of Glamour—she spent time talking color with us earlier this year, revealing the best shades to wear if you want to make new friends, feel less stressed, or win an argument (though the same colors can mean different things for men and women).

The spring shades revealed today were gathered by examining designers’ spring creations, but it’s a bit more intense when Pantone selects its top hue of the year. It was a deep red marsala for 2015, and we got the scoop on how that happened.

You’ll Need More Than A Credit Card To Get Your Hands on Saint Laurent’s New Couture Collection

With price tags in the 5-digit range, couture collections are prohibitively expensive for most of us. But now, Saint Laurent is taking the already exclusive category to the next level.

Today, the French fashion house announced plans to bring back couture with “Yves Saint Laurent” Couture ivory silk label under the tutelage of designer Hedi Slimane. The house’s last couture show was in 2002 and designed by the late Yves Saint Laurent, who died in 2008.

The new collection of silky tuxedos and black column dresses will debut in Saint Laurent ads shot by Slimane next month. But shelling out tens of thousands of dollars for a look simply won’t be enough to get your hands on one. According to the brand’s chief executive, Francesca Bellettini, you’ll also need to be a “friend of the house”.

saint-laurent-couture-ny-times

An ad for “Yves Saint Laurent” Couture photographed by Hedi Slimane.

“Hedi Slimane decides these orders case by case. Unlike a couture collection, this is an even more exclusive definition,” Bellettini, told The New York Times. She also said that the collection will be available to actresses to be worn for red carpet events, such as the Oscars or the Cannes Film Festival.

We’ll keep you posted on the entire collection as it launches but, until then, we’re throwing it back to 2002—to Yves Saint Laurent’s very last couture collection, which is absolutely breathtaking.

This Makeup Artist’s Monster Transformations Are The Scariest Things You’ll See Today

Special effects and makeup artist Emily Anderson’s Instagram page is one you won’t be able to unsee. But we’re not sure whether that’s a good or bad thing.

The 23-year-old’s account is filled with hauntingly awesome makeup transformations turning Anderson into monsters, gremlins and villains. Armed with lots of water-based paints, highly-pigmented shadow palettes and patience, she’s morphed her upper body into three-dimensional versions of Doomsday, Medusa and Gizmo.

emily anderson makeup

Anderson honed her makeup artistry skills at the Cinema Makeup School in Los Angeles and on the sets of film, TV shows and music videos, including “Lizzie Borden’s Revenge,” “American Horror Story” and David Guetta and Nicki Minaj’s “Hey Mama.”

She began dabbling with monster transformations back in 2014, and picked it up again in March. “I was inspired originally by body paint that pro wrestler Finn Balor had worn actually,” she told The Huffington Post. “I ended up having the chance to do his body paint for a match in San Jose for Wrestle Mania Weekend.”

To help seamlessly blend the makeup out into the crevices and folds of her skin, Anderson uses a total of four makeup brushes and sometimes the BeautyBlender. For more heavy duty long-wear makeup looks, she reaches for airbrush paints.

All of Anderson’s monster transformations seem incredibly complex to achieve. “The raptor was pretty complicated because of the angles involved, but some of the Disney scenes or Gizmo took more detail,” she said. “I try to challenge myself each time so they are all a little difficult or complicated for me to work out in some way!”

emily anderson makeup

When it’s time to take it all off, she swears by soap and water for the water-based paints, 99-percent alcohol to remove the airbrush and alcohol colors, and Neutrogena makeup remover wipes for anything that’s left over.

See some of Emily Anderson’s most gruesome transformations below and head over to her Instagram page for more looks.

5 Things You’ll Never Hear Women Say To Catcallers

Whether it’s worth the time or potential risk to respond or not, it should surprise no one that women’s general reactions to catcalling are not favorable. In a new video, BuzzFeed Yellow decided to take a different angle: If and when women respond to street harassers, what would we never say?

BuzzFeed chose five common examples of street harassment and had women react in completely implausible ways. Like when a random guy offers a woman a ride and she says, “Yeah, I want a ride! Thank you so much for asking, complete and utter stranger!”

Note to catcallers: because every now and then, we need a reminder to smile — thanks for reminding us! (Is a thing we’ll never say.)

Venice Biennale Arte 2015: Doug Argue’s Scattered Rhymes, a Satellite Exhibit You’ll Want to See

2015-05-08-1431101169-4190625-calle.JPG

On May 9th the 2015 Venice Biennale Arte officially opens to the public. Yet for the last week the Jewel of the Adriatic has been buzzing with activity. The stylish art crowd, dressed with a proper dose of eccentricity, arrived early and from around the globe. Holding envied invitations to a plethora of exhibit inaugurations and vernissage, the press, contemporary artists, patrons and the who’s who of the art world crossed ancient thresholds into Venetian gardens, Renaissance palaces, galleries and the multitude of Country sponsored pavilions to raise their prosecco chalices to creative expression.

Last Wednesday, Save Venice, the New York based organization which has raised more than 20 million dollars to restore 400 works of art and architecture in Venice, Italy, debuted as an advocate for contemporary art. A cherished invitation to their event led me passed the Accademia di Belle Arti–Academy of Fine Arts–down a tight secluded alleyway lit by a sliver of early evening sky, and into Doug Argue’s Scattered Rhymes satellite Biennale exhibit. Off the calle and up worn marble steps, I entered the 15th century Palazzo Contarini dal Zaffo’s rectangular shaped magazzino where four aging brick walls, an ancient wood beamed ceiling and floor contrast and embrace the American artist’s four Venetian inspired oil on canvas pieces. Time and Again, Cosa Mentale, Mother Tongue and my favorite, Calle: a 91 x 280 inch blast of color, energy and light. Mr. Argue, a talented and gracious man, explained that the sliver of Venetian sky I had left in the alleyway was his inspiration for this painting. Perhaps that explains why I find Calle–Italian for alley–so intriguing.

Gazillion miniscule drops of color cover the enormous canvas like the aurora borealis weaving through the Milky Way. Calle, like Argue’s other three works on display, draws you in and holds you there to study and examine its detail only to send you across the room, never letting you take your eyes away, until you’re drawn back, once again, to discover tiny letters falling across the canvas forming the word consolations; bits of communication floating in the midst of a grand presence connect, like the night sky, to deliver a larger message.

What makes the piece all the more interesting is Mr. Argue’s technique of using the brush and medical syringes to create a constellation of texture, movement, and layers. Holding a syringe loaded with paint in one hand and standing above the blank canvas that he had extended across the floor, Argue used the palm of his other hand to shoot the color up into the air, injection after injection, and let the drops fall onto the canvas. Drops form more perfect circles when they fall freely, is what he told me.

Born in St. Paul, Minnesota and now based in New York City, Doug Argue was twenty-four years old when he first visited Venice, Italy. Now, almost thirty years later, he describes the work he is proud to exhibit in the city that continues to inspire him–words I think well define Venice and her contemporary dilemmas, too:

“There are many different histories in the world, in both art and politics, and we often see things in the current moment, yet have no idea what lies beneath. One language is always turning into another, one generation is always rising and another falling, there is no still moment. I am trying to express this flux–this constant shifting of one thing over another, like a veil over the moment itself.”

Recently, two of Doug Argue’s paintings were commissioned for the lobby of One World Trade Center in Manhattan, and others are held in the collections at the Minneapolis Institue of Art and the Weisman Art Museum. Other pieces have been shown in solo exhibitions from Santa Monica, California to Yerevan, Armenia. Now, I expect, and hope, that his Venetian inspired pieces will find good homes, too. My “know what you like, know what you don’t like” layperson’s opinion is that Calle merits a special place–perhaps in a European or American modern art museum, where the Venetian sky can be seen by many and for many generations to come.

What You’ll Never Fix About Your Marriage (and Why You Don’t Have to)

I planned to tell my now-husband that it wasn’t going to work out on our third date. He was very sweet, respectful and handsome but my internal voice suggested we weren’t compatible enough.

He was in sales; I was studying to be a therapist. We had different views on religion. With his short hair and clean-shaven face he was more clean-cut than my previous boyfriends. And our first kiss had just been so-so. I had my doubts about where this might go.

On that date, however, as we shot pool and munched peanuts I ended up having such a great time that I decided to give him a chance, and that evening the kiss was delicious.

Over twelve years of marriage and parenting, our differences have, at times, been the source of conflict. But what I’ve learned to hold onto is that, it’s the doubt, judgment and criticism of our differences, that are toxic — not the number of ways we differ.

Of course, we all want to share some fundamental things — and to have a successful relationship we’ve got to have the basics — safety, love, trust and commitment. But compatibility is more about the ways we draw on one another’s strengths to build a whole that is greater than the sum of its parts.

More than, “Do we have enough in common?” or “Can he finish my sentences?” I think the important question is: “Am I open and willing to work towards finding the gifts in our similarities and differences?”

There are red flag issues like abuse or dishonesty, and then there’s the other stuff: I’m outdoorsy and he’s not, I’m neat and he’s messy, I’m a meat-eater and he’s vegetarian. These differences aren’t deal-breakers. In fact, our fixation on the ways that our husband is “too different” from us is the actual thing that keeps us from being compatible.

But what do we do when we find ourselves focusing on, and judging our marriage, for the qualities we don’t share?

Here are some tips for nurturing true compatibility:

  • Watch out for unrealistic expectations. Soul mates can be found, but more often they are co-created.
  • Pay attention to your focus. We invest our energy where we choose to focus. Choose gratitude instead of criticism as often as possible.
  • Cut your circular thinking. Train your mind instead of having it rule you. Practices like meditation are invaluable for this skill.
  • Choose curiosity over criticalness. What are the differences about? What do they add to the relationship? (Embrace those things.)
  • Get into your body: breathe, stretch, notice. Criticism is often more about fear than about true incompatibility.

Twelve years later, my husband and I are going strong with 2 kids, 2 dogs, 5 chickens and a guinea pig. Our differences have, at times, been the source of conflict, but in working through that conflict our love and commitment have grown.

Geico Creates ‘Unskippable’ Preroll YouTube Ads That You’ll Want To Watch Till The End

After sitting through the first five unavoidable seconds of a YouTube preroll ad, most people don’t bother watching the spot till the end. But Geico is now hoping to change that with two new preroll commercials that promise to be “unskippable.”

Both Geico ads, created by The Martin Agency, cleverly place emphasis on the first five seconds, acknowledging that they only have those few moments to capture the audience’s attention.

“You can’t skip this Geico ad,” the commercial says, “because it’s already over.”

If viewers choose to continue watching, however, they’re rewarded with an unexpected and funny ending.

One of the ads features a family sitting around a dining table while another shows two friends enjoying a barbecue. Watch how the first commercial unfolds in the video above. The other ad can be viewed here:

This Is The Juiciest eBay Listing You’ll Ever Read

In the market for slightly used lingerie purchased originally by a middle-aged married man for a 25-year-old he wanted to sleep with? How weird, you just missed that sale on eBay!

In a recent 500-word eBay listing, mom of three Sandra von Riekhoff offered up quite the backstory for the purple Agent Provocateur corset she was selling: The lingerie was purchased 15 years ago by a 40-year-old married man who wanted to make her his mistress.

“I have only worn it while drunk. It looks ridiculous otherwise,” von Riekhoff wrote in the ad. “Try standing with it on, flat foot in broad daylight. It appears desperate.”

Why unload such a gem after all this time? Outside of feeling guilty over taking it to begin with, von Riekhoff told the Huffington Post the teddy was simply not worth keeping around anymore.

“In this age of waste not, want not — and as an almost 40-year-old old mother of three — the lingerie was gathering dust,” she said.

Read the listing in all its glory below.

The corset ending up selling for 17 pounds (roughly $ 25 U.S.). Von Riekhoff said she wishes the buyer all the best.

“I hope she or he enjoys it while they can. Time is ticking!” she told The Huffington Post.

And if you’re bummed you missed the sale, don’t fret — there’s more where it came from. Von Riekhoff is now auctioning off a vintage Hérmes scarf the married man bought for her. (The receipt for the scarf was what tipped the wife off about her husband’s shady behavior.) All proceeds from the scarf will go to Sal’s Shoes, a charitable organization that collects and redistributes outgrown children’s shoes to kids in need.

Beyonce Launches Vegan Home Delivery Meal Service In Hopes You’ll Feel #Flawless

If a diva is a female version of a hustler, then, logically speaking, a vegan diva is the female version of a vegan hustler.

The clean-eating Beyonce herself recently partnered with her personal trainer, exercise physiologist Marco Borges, to launch the 22 Days Nutrition plant-based home delivery meal service. The service offers three meal plans, where you can sign up to receive anywhere from one to three meals a day for 22 days delivered to your door each week. A full three-meals-a-day package will cost you a total of $ 629.79, including shipping of $ 19.95. According to the website, all of the meals are gluten-free, soy-free and organic. Each meal is “a perfect balance of protein, carbohydrates and fat with limited salt and sugar.”

22days

The meal plan busts the myth that vegans struggle to get enough protein in their diets. “In reality, eating a variety of beans, nuts, seeds and grains will give your body the protein it needs to keep energy levels up and build and keep muscle tone,” the website says.

Twenty-two days of veganism may seem random, but the time span is a conscious choice of Borges and Beyonce. “The program’s philosophy is based on the concept that it takes 21 days to make or break a habit and on the 22nd day you are well on your way to forming new habits,” says a statement. The meal plan is targeted to those who want to lose weight, cook less or simply “experience a whole new way of eating.”

“I am so grateful that I took the challenge and credit Marco with leading by example,” Beyonce says in the statement. “He is the most energetic person I know and it’s all because of his decision to live a healthy lifestyle. He came up with a great program to get people motivated to make better nutritional choices. All you have to do is try. If I can do it, anyone can.”

Beyonce’s first public stint with veganism was in December 2013, when she and her husband Jay Z adopted the plant-based diet for 22 days. Jay Z referred to the challenge as “a spiritual and physical cleanse.”

FOUND: 25 Designer iPhone 6 Cases You’ll Be Obsessed With

vanessa-jackman

Fashion is usually cutting edge, but when it comes to fashionable phone cases, the ones we love tend to lag a bit behind the actual product’s release. I’ve had an iPhone 6 for a little bit at this point, and still don’t have a case. I know, I know, so irresponsible. The problem is, when I bought the phone, Apple was sold out of every single iPhone 6 case (how does that even happen?!) and no one else had started producing their decidedly more good-looking iPhone armor in the new size. As a result, I walk around the city holding my phone with a death grip. Do you?

Now that the holiday run on electronics and accessories has slowed, I’m officially buckling down and shopping for a case—and you should too! For the accident prone to those of you who just want to dress your favorite accessory in something pretty, flip through the 25 cases below. Grab more than one and change them up, depending on the day—we won’t judge. In fact, we may very well do the same!

How do you clothe your phone? Let us know below!

In a Million Years, You’ll Never Guess Who Was The Most Googled Fashion Designer of 2014

Google has released its always-interesting list of the celebrities, terms, and people we collectively searched the most during the entire year and I’m here to tell you, there are some shockers. The most interesting one is the name that took the top spot in the fashion designer category, mostly because, arguably, the person isn’t exactly a designer. Nope, the honor went to 19-year-old Bethany Mota, YouTube star, for her collection with Aeropostale.

bethany-mota-aeropostale-velvet-skater-dress

This is her modeling a velvet dress from the range (which also has a bedding component). She has a cute style that’s relatable for everyone from middle school age on up and watching her videos feels like you’re talking to a best friend, so I get the appeal. Aeropostale harnessed that popularity and intimacy; the product description for this dress reads “You guys know me, so I’m sure you already know I’m freaking out about my Solid Velvet Dress! I’m so pumped about its shimmery fabric and sassy scoop back.”

Taking the number two and three spots were Kate Spade and Oscar de la Renta. Valentino, Alexander Wang, and Rachel Roy also made the list and, interestingly, Beyoncé’s mom Tina Knowles had the number 10 spot.

The most queried fashion question was how to wear a scarf, followed by what to wear to weddings, interviews, and a first date. Ankle boots, leggings, and beanies also earned spots as pieces that people want styling suggestions for.

What about your browser history? Is there a particular style question you’ve asked Google about?

Why You’ll Rarely See Reese Witherspoon Wearing All Black

With a career that’s included covering lots of Reese Witherspoon‘s outfit choices, I can say with some conviction that she’s a woman who likes her color. Her off-duty combos almost always feature a bright pop of something and her best red carpet moments have been when she’s in a crayon-color solid (warm yellow at the 2007 Golden Globes, hot pink at this year’s Met Gala). Turns out, Reese has a pretty straightforward explanation.

reese-witherspoon-hot-pink-dress-governors-awards-2014

“She said, ‘I’m Southern. I don’t wear all black,'” the star’s stylist, Leslie Fremar, recounted to WWD while explaining the process that goes into selecting her looks for red carpet season. “I said, ‘Just this once. It will make an impact,'” she said of convincing Reese to slip into the one-shoulder Saint Laurent dress she chose for Wild‘s premiere at the Toronto Film Festival. “Reese and I have completely opposite personal styles, but I appreciate her for knowing who she is and what works on her. I [just] put a slight push on her.”

reese-witherspoon-black-saint-laurent-dress-wild-premiere-2014

When Reese and Leslie decide on a look, the likelihood of it changing last-minute is fairly low (no Anne Hathaway-style dress drama for her). “Like a wedding, you don’t wake up that morning and go, ‘I feel like wearing something else,’ so you have to love what you’ve chosen.”

How often do you wear black? Do you wear the color head-to-toe a lot?
