Otis College of Art and Design Receives $2.5 Million, Honors Swimwear Designer Anne Cole

On Sept. 6, Otis College of Art and Design’s Academic Building will officially be renamed the Anne Cole Building, in honor of the late swimwear designer and L.A. style legend who gifted the school $ 2.5 million to establish the Anne Cole Scholarship Fund for students in its fashion design program. Cole, who died at age 90 in early 2017, was a longtime mentor and supporter of the Los Angeles-based school, established in 1918. “Past students will always remember their time with her,” said Rosemary Brantley, fashion designer and chair emeritus of the school’s fashion design program since the Eighties. “Future students will have a dream realized when they receive a scholarship in her name.” Cole is best known for inventing the tankini in the Nineties under her namesake label, started in 1982. She was the daughter of Fred Cole, a silent film actor who in 1925 founded Cole of California, a swimwear company that helped establish L.A. as a center of the industry. Anne grew up in the Hollywood scene, watching her father outfit silver screen starlet and swimmer Esther Williams, who was the face of the Cole of California brand. He also collaborated with Hollywood costume designer Margit Fellegi in the Thirties

Anne Valérie Hash Becomes Artistic Director of Bonpoint

NEW BEGINNINGS: French designer Anne Valérie Hash is taking over the creative direction of mother-daughter fashion brand Bonpoint.
She succeeds Christine Innamorato, who was brought into the company by its founder Marie-France Cohen in 2006. Innamorato oversaw both the childrens’ collection and the adult line, Bonpoint Paris, which was launched in 2018. Prior to that, Bonpoint was carrying a young-adult line, named YAM, which has since been discontinued.
A start date for Hash is yet to be announced. Contacted by WWD, a spokeswoman for Bonpoint declined to comment.
Hash, a graduate of the École de la Chambre Syndicale de la Couture Parisienne, launched her own fashion label in 2001, subsequently winning the ANDAM Prize in 2003. The designer introduced a kid’s line named “Mademoiselle” in 2008, aimed exclusively at girls. Then the brand closed in 2014, and the designer was named creative director of Comptoir des Cotonniers, owned by Japanese retail giant Fast Retailing, in February 2015.
Under Hash’s creative leadership, Comptoir des Cotonniers highlighted its legacy of dressing mothers and daughters via a series of advertising campaigns. For the brand’s 20th anniversary, for instance, Charlotte Gainsbourg and her 13-year-old daughter Alice appeared in the fall 2015 campaign. Hash’s contract with the brand ended in May

Anna Sui, Norma Kamali Talk Shop With Marie Claire’s Anne Fulenwider at FGI’s ‘Tastemakers’

CHANGE IN SEASONS: Anna Sui and Norma Kamali colorfully recapped their careers Thursday morning at the 21 Club, but they left attendees thinking about the industry’s future more than the past.
Marie Claire’s Anne Fulenwider covered a lot of ground as moderator of the Fashion Group International’s “Tastemakers” event. Her newest Hearst hire, Kate Lanphear, was in the crowd along with Patricia Underwood, Marylou Luther, Nicole Fischelis, Amy Rosi and others.
Sui explained how she got to know Kamali from hanging out in the designer’s 53rd Street store, where her roommate worked. But Sui really bonded when Kamali invited Sui for Christmas dinner, when she was stranded in the city for the holidays. Raised in a family of intellectuals, Sui described her mother’s reaction to her designer dreams as, “You really want to be a dressmaker?” But her parents became avid supporters — front row at every show, with her father, who moonlighted to help pay for her Parsons School of Design tuition, also acting as staff photographer.
Kamali also looked back at her salad days, crediting her Fashion Institute of Technology fashion illustration professor Anna Ishikawa with having the most impact on her life. Other recollections weren’t so rosy. Describing an early

Anne Rice: ‘I Feel Like I’m Gay’ And Forget ‘I Have A Gender’

The Vampire Chronicles author Anne Rice recently revealed that she not only feels like she’s gay, but that she often finds herself forgetting she has a gender.

Speaking with The Daily Beast, she discussed her relationship with the LGBTQ community, sexuality and gender.

“I’ve always been very much a champion of gay rights, and art produced by gay people,” Rice said in the interview. “People told me Interview with the Vampire was a gay allegory, and I was very honored by that. I think I have a gay sensibility and I feel like I’m gay, because I’ve always transcended gender, and I’ve always seen love as transcending gender”

Rice added, “I get teased a lot by my gay friends because we have a rapport on things we find exciting or interesting. It’s very hard for me to remember that I have a gender…”

Read the full interview with the Daily Beast here.

The best-selling author of gothic fiction rose to fame thanks to her wildly popular The Vampire Chronicles, which were adapted into the blockbuster films “Interview with a Vampire” and “Queen of the Damned.”

Rice’s latest project, Prince Lestat and the Realms of Atlantis, centers around her same antihero, Lestat, from The Vampire Chronicles. She is also currently working to develop a television pilot alongside her openly gay son, Christopher Rice, based on The Vampire Chronicles, which is being touted as a “Game Of Thrones”-style series.

Anne Barge to Launch Large-Size Wedding Gowns Trunk Show at Mark Ingram

BARGE’S NEW PLAN: To drum up interest in the Anne Barge Curve Couture collection, the company has joined forces with Mark Ingram Atelier for its first large-size trunk show on Friday.
While in-store events are common practice for brides-to-be, this will mark the first time that existing Anne Barge bestsellers will be offered in-store in sample sizes 16 to 20 at the boutique in Midtown Manhattan. After this week’s curtain raiser, trunk shows will be held at select retailers in other U.S. cities. Founder Anne Barge Clegg herself won’t be in New York for the gathering but Ingram will be there to assist brides.
Clegg, who has designed wedding dresses for 18 years, said, “I know well that for many, longtime visions of becoming a bride are first realized in the fitting room. We would like to see the joy in that moment become more universal.”
Anne Barge Bridal president Shawne Jacobs said domestic retailers had been requesting “high-end bridal couture” in sizes 16 to 20. The upcoming trunk show will consist of 15 best-selling styles from past and current collections.
Ingram said, “I always want my brides to feel comfortable and have a realistic impression of how her dream gown will truly look

Anne Frank Made Me Throw Up

2015-06-10-1433896850-8929105-BongsSensimillaOneHitter.jpg

I looked forward to Amsterdam; meeting up with my friend Laura, and attending to unfinished business.

We met at Schiphol Airport, or shit pool, as she called it. It was a relief to see Laura. The last five weeks of traveling, had been a challenging, and I longed for familiarity, and people who spoke English.

Before I left for Amsterdam, I got an email from my mother. “Dani, have fun and don’t smoke too much dope.” Where do I begin with that?

I first visited Amsterdam when I spent a semester abroad studying in Paris, when I was in college. School was a breeze, and it didn’t require a great deal of studying, so I was able to travel every weekend. For six months I took full advantage of my time in Europe. One weekend I decided to go to Amsterdam.

I arrived at the architecturally impressive train station in the city of legal drugs, legal prostitution and cheese. I stayed at Bob’s Youth Hostel, which at the time was a popular backpacker hangout. By coincidence, I ran into a couple of girls from my program back in Paris. They invited me to hang out with them, or I invited myself, I can’t remember. They were partiers. I was not. They wanted to lounge in coffee shops, and smoke dope. I did not. I wanted to go to the Van Gogh Museum and to The Anne Frank House–they did not.

Actually, I didn’t either but my father sent me off to Europe with a list of recommended places to see, and I didn’t want to disappoint him, so I made sure that I ticked each and every one the list before I returned home. Taking the list literally dispels any mystery as to why I spent a good part of my entire adult life in therapy.

I went out to dinner with the girls, and ate a space cake. The details are foggy at best, but suffice it to say that the girls continued on to other coffee shops, and I went back to Bob’s to throw up. I hurled all through the night, which must have been a real treat for the forty other fellow travelers sharing the room with me.

I felt better in the morning so I went to the Van Gogh museum. When one acts for the sole purpose of checking off a list, chances are, one is not going to remember much, as it was in my case. I have zero recollection of what was in the museum; I assume some Van Gogh pieces.

I was still feeling okay, so I walked over to the Anne Frank house. I waited in line, bought my ticket and went inside. Just as I was midway up the attic staircase, a sudden wave of nausea washed over me. Please, no. Any place but the attic! I quickly did an about face, and bolted down the one-way staircase the wrong way. It was too late. There wasn’t time to find the actual exit.

I sprinted outside, ran across the street, and heaved the last few remnants of that evil space cake into the canal. Moments later I found my way back to Shit Pool Airport, and caught the next flight to Paris.

Eighteen years later, I was back at the Anne Frank house with Laura. I wanted to make it up to the attic. And I did. Anne’s story was indeed an incredible example of a triumphant spirit. I only wish that I didn’t see two young guys running through the house laughing and carrying on as if they were at a keg party.

The other part of Amsterdam that I missed all those years ago, due to my drug induced state, was the Red Light District, which inappropriately enough was also on my father’s list. Laura and I walked the streets. It was both sad and fascinating. Women were on display like ducks hanging in a Chinatown food stall. They peered out of their tiny windows at throngs of passerby’s. There was a fine line between giving an innocent look and staring. I didn’t want to be impolite and not look, but I didn’t want them to think that I was in the market, and get their hopes up.

The rows of windows looked like dioramas that I used to make in grade school. I think I expected the girls to be naked. They weren’t. Most of them looked despondent, hot and bothered. I expected them to be a bit more proactive. They could’ve tap danced or juggled, something to get the people’s attention. I’m sure it was a competitive business.

I saw one man writing a woman a check. Huh? Most grocery stores don’t take personal checks. One woman was watching television; that would’ve been me. Two girls sat in one window. I think one was visiting because she was fully clothed and holding the local Multiplex schedule under her arm.

Laura and I entertained the idea of knocking on one adorable Asian girl’s window so we could have a chat. I had a lot of questions, and as hard as she tried, Laura just didn’t have the answers. Do you have to pay for your window space? How come you’re not naked? Do you take Traveler’s Checks and credit cards too? Do you ride a bike to work? Is there central air and heat in the room?

As we were leaving, I saw a man walking into one of the dioramas with a smile on his face and dream in his heart. I ticked both The Anne Frank House and the Red Light District off of my list.

The Irish Heritage of the Remarkable Anne Meara

Like so many, I am mourning the loss of actress, comedian and writer, Anne Meara. Partnered in every sense of the word with Jerry Stiller (whose autobiography is called Married to Laughter: A Love Story Featuring Anne Meara), her husband of 61 years, she brought smiles to all of us, but there was so much more to her career than many of us appreciated. She and Jerry also generously gifted the world with their chip-off-the-old-block children, Amy and Ben Stiller.

Scanning the countless comments on her passing, one can’t help but notice the number of Irish Americans who felt compelled to share their grief. That’s because she’s familiar to us. So many of us were raised by tall, whip-smart, no-nonsense (but soft inside), Irish American moms that Anne Meara always felt like home.

Her own Irish Catholic upbringing — steeped in a world of parochial schools, Knights of Columbus, and priestly relatives — was unkind to her (for insight and a taste of her writing talent, read Old Nuns), but it undoubtedly shaped her. And so, as a modest tribute, I’d like to share some bits and pieces of her family history.

  • Anne Meara’s heritage is 100% Irish and the names that feature in her family tree include Breslin, Dempsey, Donovan, Driscoll, Garrity, Harty, McLaughlin, Meara, Riley, and Shine.
  • She was the only child of Edward J. Meara and Mae Dempsey, who married in Brooklyn in 1920.

2015-05-25-1432571455-7667245-mearadempseymarrannbkdailyeagle15aug1920bklynnewspapers.jpg

(bklyn.newspapers.com)

  • Her most recent immigrant ancestors were her paternal Meara grandparents who both arrived in the early 1880s. The couple had seven children, only two of whom survived to adulthood. James Meara was initially a fireman before becoming a patrolman around 1891. Prudent and frugal, he invested in real estate, enabling him to retire in comfort in 1913 after 21 years on the force.

2015-05-25-1432571608-2055319-mearajameshalf.jpg

(bklyn.newspapers.com)

  • James Meara’s carefully laid plans probably didn’t prepare him for the events of 1914. On May 4th, he became a widower and on May 5th, he became a grandfather for the first time. His response to the sudden changes in his life? Take his son, daughter, and new-born grandson on a trans-Atlantic journey to the old country via Liverpool, England. But fate wasn’t done playing with him yet. On August 4th, Great Britain declared war on Germany, so James and his family traversed the ocean back to New York just nine days later.
  • Anne’s maternal immigrant ancestors – three great-grandparents and a pair of great-great-grandparents – had come to New York decades before her paternal relatives. In fact, her first American-born ancestor was a great-grandmother named Mary Riley who was born in Brooklyn around 1847.
  • Several generations of Anne’s maternal Dempsey family are all buried together, ranging from her mother to her immigrant great-grandfather, Cornelius Dempsey. Cornelius had arrived in 1851 on the Western World, and rather unexpectedly for a passenger record of this era, reveals that he was from Cork.

2015-05-25-1432571726-182568-corneliusdempseyarrivaloct1851westernworldfs.jpg

(familysearch.org)

  • Thanks to a free website provided by the Irish Government (irishgenealogy.ie), it is possible to trace Cornelius to Drimoleague (aka Dromdaleague) in County Cork where he was born around 1827. He was the eldest of at least 11 children born to James Dempsey and Mary Donovan, who had married there on June 23, 1825. Though it’s difficult to make out, their marriage record seems to indicate that James was from Myross.

(irishgenealogy.ie)

  • Anne could be called pan-Irish since her roots are scattered across the country. Though it would take additional research to confirm conclusively, there is strong evidence that Counties Donegal and Tipperary have, like Cork, contributed to her family tree, and there’s one more branch of immigrants whose specific Irish origins are as of yet unknown.
  • Anne Meara was likely acquainted with much, but not all of the details shared here, but I suspect that the most meaningful part of her family history — aside perhaps from her 1953 marriage to Jerry Stiller — was the births of their children, Amy and Ben, both proudly announced in the local paper.

The Night We Met Anne Meara

Sadly, it was reported today (May 24) that celebrated comedian and actress Anne Meara had passed away, at age 85. While this was a personally devastating day for the Stiller family, it was a poignantly nostalgic and melancholy day for those fans familiar with Anne’s extraordinary career.

People–especially younger folks–may not be aware that, besides being the wife of the great Jerry Stiller and the mother of the multi-talented Ben Stiller, Anne was the brilliant “Meara” in “Stiller and Meara,” the husband-wife duo that set a record of having appeared 36 times on the old Ed Sullivan television show. She was wonderfully witty, Jerry was profoundly droll, and as a consequence, “Stiller and Meara” quickly rose to the top of the heap.

On Dec. 10, 2005, my wife Marilyn and I were celebrating her birthday by attending a special comedy show at McCabe’s Guitar Shop in Santa Monica, California. Two comedy greats–the legendary Mort Sahl and the bitterly satirical Dick Gregory–were appearing on the same bill.

McCabe’s is a tiny venue, barely more than 120 seats. Literally, there wasn’t a bad seat in the house, and, of course, the show was sold out. We arrived moments after the doors opened and took our seats in row 3. Marilyn and I were stunned at who was seated in the same row, directly next to us. It was Anne Meara and Jerry Stiller.

In the 10 or 12 minutes before the show began, the four of us began chatting. We couldn’t help ourselves. We were setting next to two of our favorite people. When I told them it was Marilyn’s birthday, Jerry instantly began crooning a couple of bars of “Happy Birthday” to her. The four of us also noted that this day, besides being my wife’s birthday, was a somber occasion.

Two famous and accomplished Americans–Eugene McCarthy and Richard Pryor–had died earlier that same day, Dec. 10, 2005. The coincidence and confluence of events–meeting Anne and Jerry on my wife’s actual birthday, seeing Mort and Dick Gregory perform together, and knowing that we had lost both Senator McCarthy and Richard Pryor–was eerie, almost freakish.

As it turned out, I had something “in common” with Stiller and Meara, tenuous as it was. I casually mentioned that I had interviewed Mort Sahl for the now-defunct New York Press (I was introduced to Mort by L.A. theatrical booking agent Jeanine Frank), and that I had seen Dick Gregory at the old Crescendo club in L.A. many years earlier, while I was till in high school.

When I mentioned that the singers Joe and Eddie had opened for Gregory that night, Anne perked up and said that she and Jerry had once played on the same bill with Joe and Eddie at Mr. Kelley’s club in Chicago.

Anne couldn’t have been sweeter or more generous. The last thing she (or Jerry, for that matter) wanted was to have a couple of fans pester them while they attended what was bound to be a memorable comedy show. But they were nothing short of gracious. My wife remembers it as her “favorite” birthday. Rest in peace, Anne.

Anne Meara, Actress And Mother Of Ben Stiller, Dies At 85

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Actress and comedian Anne Meara, whose comic work with husband Jerry Stiller helped launch a 60-year career in film and TV, has died. She was 85.

Jerry Stiller and son Ben Stiller say Meara died Saturday. No other details were provided.

The Stiller family released a statement to The Associated Press on Sunday describing Jerry Stiller as Meara’s “husband and partner in life.”

“The two were married for 61 years and worked together almost as long,” the statement said.

The couple performed as Stiller & Meara on “The Ed Sullivan Show” and other programs in the 1960s and won awards for the radio and TV commercials they made together. Meara also appeared in dozens of films and TV shows, including a longtime role on “All My Children” and recurring appearances on “Rhoda,” ”Alf,” ”Sex and the City” and “The King of Queens.” She shared the screen with her son in 2006’s “Night at the Museum.”

Meara was twice nominated for an Emmy Award for her supporting role on “Archie Bunker’s Place,” along with three other Emmy nods, most recently in 1997 for her guest-starring role on “Homicide.” She won a Writers Guild Award for co-writing the 1983 TV movie “The Other Woman.”

Besides her husband and son, Meara is survived by her daughter, Amy, and several grandchildren.

The family statement said: “Anne’s memory lives on in the hearts of daughter Amy, son Ben, her grandchildren, her extended family and friends, and the millions she entertained as an actress, writer and comedienne.”

Travels with Anne

Travels with Anne

Travels with Anne is a hilarious account of vacation misadventures.  Join Stuart Anderson and his ever-faithful companion, Anne, as they try their luck in various unlikely vacation spots, including:  southern Africa, where Anne and Stuart learn about the perils of traveling with a guide who knows absolutely nothing about the country; Central America, where the vacationers learn about humidity, jungle insects, and why it doesn’t pay to drop your eyeglasses into the ocean; the Yukon Territory, where Anne and Stuart find that grizzly bears can be very annoying; the Canadian High Arctic, where it turns out—if you can believe it—that the weather can be pretty darned bad; Trinidad and Tobago, where the most notable things about the weather are the rain and the fact that it never stops; Mexico’s Copper Canyon, where Stuart and Anne are lucky enough to travel with the quintessential Texas windbag; and, finally, West Texas’s Chihuahan Desert, where the vacationers enjoy missing car keys, flat tires, and repeated encounters with seemingly insane bird watchers.   Along with being endlessly funny, Travels with Anne is also a surefire cure for wanderlust.  Read this book, and for heaven’s sake stay at home.

Anne of Green Gables

Anne of Green Gables

The illustrations for this series were created by Scott McKowen, who, with his wife Christina Poddubiuk, operates Punch & Judy Inc., a company specializing in design and illustration for theater and performing arts. Their projects often involve research into the visual aspects of historical settings and characters. Christina is a theater set and costume designer and contributed advice on the period clothing for the illustrations. Scott created these drawings in scratchboard – an engraving medium which evokes the look of popular art from the period of these stories. Scratchboard is an illustration board with a specifically prepared surface of hard white chalk. A thin layer of black ink is rolled over the surface, and lines are drawn by hand with a sharp knife by scraping through the ink layer to expose the white surface underneath. The finished drawings are then scanned and the color is added digitally. One thing’s for certain, no house that Anne’s in will ever be dull.” That’s what Marilla Cuthbert says about Anne, the lively red-headed orphan she and her brother Matthew adopt. For decades, girls have agreed, eagerly reading every book in Lucy Maud Montgomery’s series that chronicles Anne’s coming of age.
