How Avengers: Endgame Subtly Sets Up a New Villain

Warning: This article contains spoilers for Avengers: Endgame!

Avengers: Endgame may not be the first MCU movie to deal with the concept of time travel, but it certainly makes full use of that popular sci-fi trope. And as Marty McFly will tell you, the problem with time travel is that it’s hard to put the genie back in the bottle. Now that the Avengers have bent the MCU timeline to their will, they may be dealing with the ramifications and unintended consequences for a long time to come.

With that in mind, we can’t help but wonder if this is the first step toward introducing one of the biggest Avengers villains of them all. Could Kang the Conqueror be joining the MCU? Here’s why we think Endgame could be setting up Kang for a major role in Phase 4 and beyond.

The Big Question About Black Widow in Avengers: Endgame

Warning: This story contains FULL SPOILERS for Avengers: Endgame!

In order for the Avengers to secure all of the Infinity Stones to complete their “Time Heist,” it was inevitable that one of them would have to trade their life for the Soul Stone on Vormir, and it was Black Widow who chose to pay that price. In a sacrificial act to save her friends and restore the Vanished, Black Widow exchanged her soul so Hawkeye could return to the present with the Soul Stone and reunite with his family once they were resurrected.

But is that really the end of her story, especially considering there’s a Black Widow movie currently in the works? Let’s break it down.

5 Avengers: Endgame Secrets Hidden in the Poster

The MCU is great at hiding all sorts of clues in plain sight in just about any and all promotional material, from trailers to tweets. Naturally, this means that even the official movie poster is more than likely hiding some juicy details just waiting to be noticed.

We did our best to comb through every inch of the newly released Avengers: Endgame poster with that in mind, plucking out every possible clue and character angle we could uncover, from the major (what’s going on with Thor?) to the minor (look at Steve using his shield to protect little Rocket) and everything in between.

What Is Captain America’s Plan in Avengers: Endgame?

As if life in the post-Infinity War world weren’t already complicated and terrifying enough, the first trailer for Avengers: Endgame has only served to make things seem even more daunting. With even more questions and very few answers to go around, we’ve been left to start speculating wildly about the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe — and we keep circling back to one very specific moment in the trailer as a jumping off point. Scott Lang has apparently returned from the Quantum Realm in one piece — and he’s arrived at the Avengers compound with his Quantum Tunnel-toting van in tow, which we’re guessing will play a key role in finding a way to defeat Thanos.

The surviving Avengers are, demonstratively, pretty down and out at the start of Endgame. They lost the fight in spectacular fashion and have no Infinity Stones to their name, no real magic users to speak of save Thor who, honestly, seems a little worse-for-wear in the trailer, and no real resources at their disposal. But, Steve and Natasha have a plan — and, though it’s clearly a Hail Mary play, it’s certainly better than nothing. Using what we know based on what little we have, it’s not a total stretch to say that the Quantum tech in Scott’s van is really the only potential ace in the hole Steve and Nat have at the moment, and, because getting really, really small probably isn’t a great combat advantage, given the circumstances, it’s more likely that there’s something else in play here.

Avengers: Infinity War Co-Director Discusses The Hulk Issue

Spoiler warning: This post contains major plot details for Avengers: Infinity War, so proceed with caution. For more on Infinity War, here’s what happened to the Infinity Gauntlet at the end.

The Hulk might actually just be tired of smashing — not necessarily scared — in Avengers: Infinity War, according to co-director Joe Russo.

Speaking on the Happy Sad Confused podcast (via ComicBook.com), Russo revealed why the green guy doesn’t pop up through most of Avengers: Infinity War — even as Bruce Banner pleads for him to come out. “I think people have interpreted it as Hulk’s scared,” the co-director said. “I mean, certainly, that’s not a … I don’t know that the Hulk is ever … he’s had his ass kicked before, and he loves a good fight. But I think that it’s really reflective of the journey from

Last year, Spider-Man: Homecoming threw a wrench in the MCU timeline with its opening title card that said the movie takes place eight years after the Battle of New York from the original Avengers movie.

Avengers is supposed to be set in 2012, so that means Homecoming, Ant-Man, Civil War, and Black Panther all take place in 2020, which shifts the entire MCU timeline four years and makes some earlier dates incorrect. Witness the Avengers B.C. Assemble for the First Time

Marvel Comics is preparing to relaunch its publishing line in an effort to bring everything back to basics, emphasizing its most classic heroes and the history of the Marvel Universe. To kick off this Marvel Legacy initiative, writer Jason Aaron and artist Esad Ribic will be teaming up for a 50-page comic titled Marvel Legacy #1 that features the introduction of the Avengers from 1,000,000 BC and begins a story that will affect the entire Marvel line going forward.

Recently, the roster of this prehistoric Avengers team was revealed, including Odin, the Sorcerer Supreme, Iron Fist, Ghost Rider, Black Panther, Starbrand, and Phoenix. We hopped on the phone with Aaron to learn more about how they came up with this team, Ghost Rider’s jaw-dropping new (old?) ride, and just what causes these Avengers to assemble. We also ask if last year’s DC Universe: Rebirth #1 had any impact on him as he was writing Marvel Legacy #1.

Avengers: Infinity War Picture Hints at Possible Plot Point

New set images from Avengers: Infinity War appear to show a major change for Tony Stark in the Marvel Cinematic Universe continuity.

What follows could be considered spoilers for the upcoming film and, possibly, Spider-Man: Homecoming. This is your final warning!

In set images published by Variety, Robert Downey Jr.’s character appears to have a new chest-set Arc reactor incorporated into his costume.

Within the MCU timeline, Stark was able to remove the Arc reactor – which kept shrapnel from entering his heart – at the end of Iron Man 3, and was able to power his Iron Man suits without it in Captain America: Civil War.

Square Enix and Marvel have announced a “multi-game partnership”, starting with an Avengers game made by Tomb Raider developer, Crystal Dynamics and Deus Ex developer Eidos Montreal due for release in 2018.

Announced first on Twitter, there are few details so far, other than the cryptic use of the word “Reassemble” in the trailer and hashtags. The current title appears to be “The Avengers project”, but that is almost certainly a working title.

‘Avengers’ Strangely Makes More Sense With Bad Lip Reading

With so many things going on in the “Avengers” movies, it’s surprising Ultron just didn’t short-circuit from trying to keep up with the plot. Now, for fans who love the movies — but have no idea what’s going on — the Bad Lip Reading YouTube channel is here to save the day.

In the new video, “Redneck Avengers: Tulsa Nights,” Bad Lip Reading imagines what the Avengers would be like in a country-themed reality show. No, it doesn’t make sense, but quotes about spicy nachos and fancy pajamas sure are a lot easier to keep up with than what the heck is happening with the Tesseract, the Chitauri aliens or just about anything with Thor.

Also, thanks to the first “Avengers” movie, there are a lot of theories about what Loki was really after. This video, however, explains the guy just wants Skittles, cigarettes and some Big League Chew — which actually sounds like a pretty fantastic time.

‘Avengers: Age Of Ultron’ Tops Charts, Crushes ‘Hot Pursuit’

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The “Age of Ultron” is not over. The Avengers sequel topped the domestic box office for the second weekend in a row with an estimated $ 77.2 million according to Rentrak estimates Sunday.

The film has earned a staggering $ 312.9 million in just 10 days in theaters, tying with “The Dark Knight” to become the second-fastest film to do so. While a wild success by any measure, the film is still lagging behind the record-setting precedent of 2012’s “The Avengers,” which made $ 103.1 million in its second weekend in theatres and had a domestic total of $ 373 million at the same point in the cycle.

“Avengers: Age of Ultron” also added $ 68.3 million internationally, bringing its worldwide total to $ 875.3 million. The Disney and Marvel sequel opens in China on May 12 with midnight screenings. The midnight sellouts have even prompted Chinese IMAX screens to add 3 a.m. showings to their schedule.

“Hot Pursuit,” meanwhile, failed to make a significant mark in its debut weekend, earning a less-than-impressive $ 13.3 million. The Reese Witherspoon and Sofia Vergara buddy comedy, which cost a reported $ 35 million to produce, was projected to earn at least $ 18 million out of the gates.

“Critics were very tough on ‘Hot Pursuit,’ ” said Rentrak’s Senior Media Analyst Paul Dergarabedian. Considering the power of female audiences at the box office, and the frequency of female-driven films to over-perform, the lagging enthusiasm around “Hot Pursuit” is puzzling.

“It was a formula for whatever reason didn’t resonate with the critics, and I think that had an impact on its box office,” Dergarabedian said.

Warner Bros. EVP of Distribution Jeff Goldstein noted that the film attracted an older and primarily female audience, which is one that doesn’t necessarily rush out on opening weekend to check out a film. Audiences were 62 percent female and 82 percent over the age of 25.

The Mother’s Day holiday might help catapult the “Hot Pursuit” to a stronger Sunday, Goldstein said.

The weekend between “Ultron’s” opening and next week’s debut of “Mad Max: Fury Road” and “Pitch Perfect 2” on paper seemed like the ideal spot to place a mid-budget comedy. But it’s also possible that other titles further into their runs might have divided attentions, including the third-place film, “The Age of Adaline,” and “Ex Machina,” which snagged the sixth spot as it continues to expand.

“It’s a very competitive marketplace out there,” Dergarabedian said. “There are a lot of cool options out there right now for entertainment in theaters.”

Still, “Hot Pursuit” could surprise yet, especially when it reaches the small screen.

“Furious 7” and “Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2” rounded out the top five with $ 5.3 million and $ 5.2 million, respectively.

Ultimately, it’s still an “Avengers” world, at least until “Mad Max: Fury Road” and “Pitch Perfect 2” open next weekend.

“‘Ultron’ is just so big. It’s such a behemoth. It’s hard for a newcomer to get attention,” Dergarabedian said.

8 Things You Didn’t Know About ‘Avengers’

The new “Avengers: Age of Ultron” could totally pick up Thor’s hammer if it wanted. It is predicted to eclipse $ 80 million in its second weekend, and it continues to run faster than Quicksilver on its way to $ 1 billion globally. In other words, this movie is worthy.

In addition to commercial success, the film has also had fairly positive reviews, but perhaps one knock is the lack of fan favorite villain Loki. That was the knock, anyway.

Recently, the Internet went wild after it was revealed that actor Tom Hiddleston did actually shoot some footage. It was just cut so the movie didn’t seem too cramped. The Loki news was a shocking revelation, but as it turns out, there are a lot of other facts fans might not know about the “Avengers” franchise:

1. There are strict rules so Quicksilver can appear in the “X-Men” and “Avengers” movies.

Image: Tumblr

Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch were originally the son and daughter of the “X-Men” character Magneto. Because “X-Men” owns the rights to the mutant storyline, the “Avengers” version has the characters receiving their powers from HYDRA experiments.

2. Chris Evans doesn’t eat his shawarma because he’s wearing facial prosthetics.

After Iron Man hilariously suggests grabbing some food upon saving the world in “Avengers,” the group is seen getting some chow. What you might’ve not noticed is Chris Evans doesn’t take a bite. Entertainment Weekly reports the actor hid his face and wore prosthetics to cover up a beard.

3. Godzilla is in the Marvel universe and has fought the Avengers before.

Image: Imgur

Godzilla’s opponents in Marvel comics have included the Fantastic Four, Spider-Man, Thor and the other Avengers. Also, as a side note, Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch actors Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Elizabeth Olsen play husband and wife in 2014’s “Godzilla.”

4. Marvel action figures are made with the actual graphics files from the movie for accuracy.

Image: Giphy

Hasbro designer Dwight Stall tells HuffPost Entertainment: “Once Iron Man is created in the new film, once Hulkbuster is created, they send the working files, which we share with our sculpting partners, and together we decide how we want to cut the articulation into the forms … You can’t get a more accurate representation in a toy than that.”

5. Toy releases also hint at the major storylines.

Hasbro’s Adam Biehl tells HuffPost that Marvel tries to let kids reenact major scenes from the film. This means designers work closely with filmmakers while the script is still being written to find things like “what the key beats are, who are the key characters, what are the key action scenes and what are the key costume changes.”

6. A huge Spider-Man crossover almost made it in the “Avengers” movies.

Image: IGN

The Oscorp building, which is well known in the world of Spider-Man, nearly made it into the “Avengers” films. It was reportedly scrapped because by the time it was fully designed, the “Avengers” version of Manhattan was already nearly finished.

7. Lou Ferrigno is still the voice of The Hulk.

Image: Tumblr

The actor who played the Hulk in the ’70s TV series told ComicBook.com that Marvel has a library of his “voices and growls” that they use on everything. He also revealed Hulk’s famous “puny god” line from the first “Avengers” movie was all him, too.

8. Tom Hiddleston was almost Thor instead of Loki.

Hiddleston’s screen test for the part can be seen on the “Thor: The Dark World” DVD extras. In an interview with The Guardian, the actor explains, “Every English-speaking actor over six foot was being seen for the part. I got down to the final five.” By the way, that final five also reportedly included Chris Hemsworth’s brother Liam.

In the end, it’s probably good Hiddleston missed out on the part. As the actor says …
