Milano Moda Graduate Awards Fifth Edition’s Winners

Nurturing the next generation of fashion talents is key to the Italian chamber of fashion, which for the fifth year kicked off Milan Men’s Fashion Week with its Milano Moda Graduate event.
Conceived as a celebration of free creativity and a chance to give credit and visibility to young designers, the runway show featured collections from eight students selected from a range of Italian fashion schools including IED, Istituto Marangoni, NABA and IUAD, Accademia della moda, among others.
“The CNMI [Camera Nazionale Moda Italiana] Fashion Trust is involved in really supporting these talents and this event marks the official kickoff of the Men’s Fashion Week. I’m proud because one of our pillars is to nurture these young designers and be committed to sustain education,” said Carlo Capasa, chairman of the fashion association.
Francesco Murano of Milan’s IED scooped up the CNMI Fashion Design Prize for best collection. The Fashion Trust, a nonprofit entity established last year and supported by a group of philanthropists, entrepreneurs and investors, which helps young talents, backed the winner with a 10,000 euros monetary award.
“We’ve seen unique fashion pieces and talented, skilled young designers, the overall level was very high, which made it hard for us to make a

Barbie, the number-one fashion doll in the world, can add another notch to her skinny-waisted belt.
The doll, which celebrated its 60th birthday this year, will receive the Board of Directors’ Tribute award at the 2019 CFDA Fashion Awards. She is joining such past honorees as First Lady Michelle Obama, Tom Ford, Gloria Steinem, Janelle Monáe, Cecile Richards and Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg.

Protection, Empowerment Central Themes at U.N. Women for Peace Association Awards

No one needs reminding that the world is not a peaceful place, but attendees at Friday’s United Nations Women for Peace Association’s annual luncheon preferred to focus on the positive.
While the annual event honored actor-director-producer Ben Stiller, fashion designer Naeem Khan, philanthropists Albert and Deidre Pujols and “India’s Daughter” filmmaker Leslee Udwin, their messages stressed the need for greater women’s empowerment, improved training, workers’ rights and safety.
Before the program got under way, former New York City police commissioner Ray Kelly, who cochaired the event, spoke of what needs to happen for fashion companies to help with the problem of human trafficking. “Attention has to be drawn to it. It’s a problem that is sort of under the radar. It exists to a large extent in Eastern Europe, Central America and South America,” he said. “Sometimes it’s not as obvious as you think it would be. There is leverage being exerted against relatives, a village or something like that. It does not necessarily come to the fore; even when you question these young women, they are not coming forward with information in many instances. Critic’s Choice Awards Fashion Review: Brighter Times Ahead

Seeing so many all-white fashion looks on the Critic’s Choice Awards blue carpet Sunday night, you might have thought Hollywood was making another political statement, following last year’s all-black fashion action at the Golden Globes to protest gender inequality.
But the trend is just a trend, at least according to Allison Janney. “We’re all just feeling it,” she said, looking a bit like a superhero in a white Alberta Ferretti cape and pants look, piled high with Neil Lane diamonds.
“Perhaps it is a subconscious message of hope. Brighter times ahead,” added her stylist Tara Swennen.
Or perhaps Hollywood stars, like so many others this January, are obsessed with organization guru Marie Kondo’s new Netflix show, “Tidying Up!” Whatever the reason, the fashion news of the night was a clean sweep. Emily Blunt seemed to get the memo, wearing a crystal-embroidered white silk Prada gown that her stylist Jessica Paster described as “fresh and simple.” Constance Wu romanced in Rodarte, and Lady Gaga in billowy blush Calvin Klein (though sadly, without hair colored to match this time).
Women wore the pants—a lot, with Julia Roberts choosing a deconstructed tuxedo by Nicolas Ghesquiere for Louis Vuitton and Claire Foy projecting power in a navy blue asymmetrical

Swarovski, British Fashion Council Salute Vivienne Westwood at Fashion Awards in London

VIVA VIVIENNE: The British Fashion Council is saluting Vivienne Westwood for her longstanding efforts to get people to buy less and to think about the environment more.
At the Fashion Awards on Dec. 10, the BFC will hand Westwood the Swarovski Award for Positive Change, acknowledging her continued work to shift consumer attitudes and spearhead environmental awareness through her work in the fashion industry.
“Dame Vivienne Westwood will be recognized for being a campaigner for change throughout her career. She has led the way championing humanitarian and environmental issues, and her most recent campaign has led more businesses in the fashion industry in the U.K. to switch to green energy,” said Caroline Rush, the BFC’s chief executive officer.
Nadja Swarovski added that the award, whose past recipients include the late Vogue Italia editor Franca Sozzani and Dior creative director Maria Grazia Chiuri, is part of Swarovski’s wider efforts to promote a sustainable future.
The company, which has also been taking part in the sustainability conversation with a new fine jewelry line created with cultured diamonds and recycled gold, is the BFC’s main partner on the event and has pledged a 300,000 pounds donation to the BFC education fund, ahead of the awards ceremony next Monday

Parley for the Oceans to Be Honored for Innovation at Fashion Awards in London

THE INNOVATOR: Parley for the Oceans’ environmental mission will be honored by the British Fashion Council at this year’s Fashion Awards.
Cyrill Gutsch, the organization’s founder, is set to receive the Special Recognition Award for Innovation, a new accolade added to the award ceremony’s lineup last year and first received by Stella McCartney.
The BFC said that it wants to honor the company’s effort to “highlight the devastating effects of plastic on our environment” and to “turn a global problem into an opportunity” by spearheading creative collaborations that look at new ways of designing and consuming products.
Adidas has been one of Parley’s most recognized collaborators since 2015. The two have produced shoes made of yarns and filaments recycled from ocean waste, as well as full apparel collections for Adidas Outdoor, produced using bottles that were turned into thread.
The company has also worked with Stella McCartney on a footwear capsule last year and partnered with Porter magazine and model Anja Rubik to create an issue that raised awareness on marine pollution.
Other honorees at the awards include Miuccia Prada, who is set to receive the Outstanding Achievement Award.
The ceremony will take place on Dec. 10 at the Royal Albert Hall.

Watch Janet Jackson Surprise the Winners of Her Dance Competition and Invite Them to Perform at Billboard Awards

Rhythm Nation just got bigger!

Janet Jackson is all set to rock the stage at the 2018 Billboard Music Awards and she’ll be grooving along next to two excited new faces.

Dancers Phillip Galbert, 28, of New Britain, Conn. and La’Vala “Lala” Moss, 26, of Birmingham, Ala. had already received the news that they’d been chosen out of 75,000 hopefuls as winners of the star’s global #DanceWithJanet competition.

But they then learned from the superstar herself that not only were they part of her JTribe, but they’d soon be taking the stage to perform with her on national television.

“Obviously we saw what you did online and that’s the reason why you’re here. You did a great job,” Jackson, in the exclusive clip above, tells Galbert and Moss who first submitted auditions online.

RELATED: Janet Jackson Will Receive Icon Award at 2018 Billboard Music Awards

“We’ve come to a decision,” she says seated on the floor next to her current dancers, “How would you like to dance with us on the Billboard Awards?”

The question was met with both dancers collapsing to floor in disbelief as Jackson and her dancers rush over to embrace them.

For Bronx native Galbert, he almost didn’t have the chance to audition in person. After receiving word that his video audition earned him an invite to the final callbacks in Los Angeles, Galbert responded that he did not have the money to afford a flight from his current home in Connecticut. Furthermore, he was on the verge of eviction. But Jackson’s teamed helped him get to L.A. and the experience changed his life.

“As a professional dancer that’s your dream to dance with Janet Jackson,” Galbert said during an interview. “You grow up wanting to be with these people and inspired by these people…No one understands what I go through, and to have this given to me. It’s a once in a lifetime opportunity.”

As Jackson’s current JTribe members tell the newbies, “Dreams do come true!” They’ll all join the superstar onstage for her first television performance in nine years, at the Billboard Awards.

Hugo Boss Awards Parsons Students in Circular Systems, Strategy Course With Prizes

YOU’RE THE BOSS: Students at Parsons School of Design at The New School in New York have been honing their sustainable fashion design and innovation skills with the help of Hugo Boss.
The partners tested the waters with a workshop last year. To encourage exchange between different disciplines, the project was open to students in various areas of the school from fashion design to business. At Wednesday night’s graduate exhibit opening at the New York school, Hugo Boss announced the winners of its Circular Systems and Strategy course. Twenty students participated in the 16-week program, which is part of the company’s partnership with Parsons.
The $ 12,000 first prize, Boss One, was awarded to Annabella Waszkiewicz, Gwyneth Ong and Jose Luis Cabrera. The $ 6,000 second-place Boss Skeleton went to Elijah Devries, Camilla Hopkinson, Irene Lu, Alex O´Brien and Lara Tang. The $ 3,000 Boss Mention was given to Chenyu Wang, Haoyu Chen and Monika Mikhail. Their concepts will be displayed in one of the Boss stores in New York this year. All participants will have the opportunity to extend their work experience with the global fashion group. Hugo Boss’ former artistic director of women’s wear Jason Wu attended Parsons.

Exclusive: Kim Kardashian West to Be Honored at CFDA Awards

If Donatella Versace, Naomi Campbell and Carolina Herrera, along with most of the biggest names in American fashion and various celebrity dates/presenters weren’t enough, Kim Kardashian West will grace the CFDA Fashion Awards next month as an honoree. Kardashian West is to be the first recipient of the CFDA Influencer Award.
According to CFDA president and chief executive officer Steven Kolb, it was all Tommy Hilfiger’s idea during the board meeting to decide the recipients of this year’s special honors. “Tommy Hilfiger said, ‘If you think about influencers and how they’ve changed our industry, I think we should acknowledge that,’” said Kolb. “[The board] all agreed that Kim was someone who has really impacted the industry and has changed the way brands are presented. She’s a friend of a lot of the designers and has had great influence on fashion globally.” Kolb said that with few exceptions — Rei Kawakubo and Johnny Depp among them — a condition of receiving a special award is mandatory attendance, to which Kardashian West agreed almost immediately.
Kolb couldn’t say whether the Influencer Award would be an ongoing thing after this year, but he did note the benefits that come with honoring a one-woman tentpole like
